Bringing over 20 events to CUMBRIA over 3 days, leading poets and world class spoken word artists will take to the stage alongside brand new voices.

INTRODUCTI0N Poetry has never been more relevant than now. In light of the global pandemic we are living through, the power of this vital, dynamic art form has become increasingly important as we try to make sense of the world and how our lives have all been transformed in this early part of the 21st century. Contains Strong Language 2020 will be a three-day celebration of the spoken word in all its poetic forms and, via broadcast, digital streaming and live performance, our poets will present work to provoke and inspire everyone.

CSL is back for its fourth year, relocating to Cumbria in recognition of the 250th anniversary of William Wordsworth’s birth. We have events in Grasmere, Carlisle, Kirkby Lonsdale and Barrow-in-Furness.

This year’s festival is somewhat different to previous years as we have had to adapt and change what we do due to restrictions and guidelines on large scale public events. However, CSL 2020 still presents a heady and packed programme of acclaimed international and local poets, world class spoken word artists and breakthrough talent.

Our CSL poets will be resident for the duration of the festival, performing newly commissioned work created especially for the festival which can be accessed across the BBC radio network and seen via live streaming on BBC Arts. Cumbria will offer a warm poetry welcome to artists, poetry lovers and the wider BBC audience.

The festival is a partnership between BBC Audio, BBC Arts, BBC Radio Cumbria, Wrecking Ball Press, Arts Council England, Up For Arts, Wordsworth Grasmere, the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, the Kirkby Lonsdale Poetry Festival and The Forum, Barrow.

The CSL PoetS

Resident for Contains Strong Language 2020, OUR CSL POETS will bring you new and existing poetry, and will be involved in events throughout the festival.

MALIKA BOOKER Malika Booker is a British poet and theatre maker of Guyanese and Grenadian parentage. She is founder of the writers’ collective, Malika’s Poetry Kitchen. First full collection Pepper Seed (Peepal Tree Press, 2013) was shortlisted for the Seamus Heaney Centre 2014 prize.

KATE FOX Kate Fox works mainly as a standup poet and as a broadcaster and speaker. Work includes comedy series The Price of Happiness (Radio 4) and her current touring show Where There’s Muck There’s Bras about notable Northern women.

KATE CLANCHY Kate Clanchy recently won the Orwell Prize for her memoir, Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me. Christabel is the fourteenth play or adaptation she has had produced for BBC Radio. Gilllian Reynolds described her work as ‘Radio Drama gold’.

dove cottage YOUNG POETS Supported by Wordsworth Grasmere, Cumbrian poets aged 14-21 have met via Zoom with mentor Kim Moore. Members include Hannah Hodgson, Matt Sowerby, Jemima Longcake, Sophie Hansen, James Siodlak, Heather Hughes and Hermione Macmillan-Clare.

KATE DAVIS Kate’s poems have been published in Iota, Muse and The Templar anthology, printed on shopping bags, implanted in benches and remixed by a sound artist. In 2018 her collection The Girl Who Forgets How to Walk was published by Penned in the Margins.

KATIE HALE Katie Hale is the author of a novel, My Name is Monster (Canongate, 2019) and two poetry pamphlets: Breaking the Surface (flipped eye, 2017) and Assembly Instructions (Southword, 2019), which won the Munster Chapbook Prize.

The CSL Poets

HANNAH HODGSON Hannah Hodgson is a poet living with a life limiting illness. She has been published by the Poetry Society, Teen Vogue and Poetry Salzburg. A recipient of a Northern Writers Award for Poetry, her second poetry pamphlet will be published

by Verve Poetry Press in 2021.

RACHEL LONG Rachel Long is a poet and founder of Octavia, a poetry collective for women of colour. Rachel’s poetry and prose has been published widely, most recently in Granta and The Poetry Review. Her Forward Prize-nominated debut collection is My Darling from the Lions (Picador).

KIM MOORE Kim Moore’s first collection The Art of Falling (Seren, 2015) won the 2016 Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. She won a Northern Writers Award in 2014, an Eric Gregory Award in 2011 and the Geoffrey Dearmer Prize in 2010. She is one of the judges for the 2020 Forward Prizes for Poetry.

ZAFFAR KUNIAL Zaffar Kunial’s Us was published

by Faber & Faber in 2018 and was shortlisted for a number of awards including the Costa Poetry Award, the T. S. Eliot Prize and the Rathbones Folio Prize. He is currently the Douglas Caster Fellow in Poetry at Leeds University.

HUSSAIN MANAWER Hussain Manawer is an English Poet, writer and activist. His core messaging of mental health awareness is delivered via powerful poetry detailing personal trauma. He has performed across the globe at stages including Global Citizen, One Young World and Glastonbury.

HELEN MORT Helen Mort is a poet and novelist.

She is a five-times winner of the Foyle Young Poets award, received an Eric Gregory Award from The Society of Authors in 2007, and won the Manchester Poetry Prize Young Writer Prize in 2008. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

KAREN LLOYD Karen Lloyd is the author of two award-winning books of non-fiction; The Gathering Tide; A Journey Around the Edge of Morecambe Bay and The Blackbird Diaries.

Karen’s pamphlet Self-Portrait as Ornithologist was published in 2020

by Wayleave Press.

IAN MCMILLAN Ian McMillan is a writer and broadcaster. He’s written poems, plays, a verse autobiography Talking Myself Home and a voyage round Yorkshire in Neither Nowt Nor Summat. Ian’s latest collection is To Fold The Evening Star - New and Selected Poems (Carcanet).

JACOB POLLEY Jacob Polley has published four books of poems with Picador, winning the 2016 T.S. Eliot Prize for poetry for his fourth, Jackself, which was described by the judges as ‘a firework of a book; inventive, exciting and outstanding in its imaginative range and depth of feeling.’

The CSL Poets

CLARE SHAW Clare Shaw has three poetry collections with Bloodaxe - Straight Ahead, Head On and Flood: her forthcoming fourth collection was awarded a Northern Writer’s Award in 2018. Clare a regular contributor for the Poetry School, Wordsworth Grasmere and the Arvon Foundation.

MATT SOWERBY Matt Sowerby is a poet and climate activist from Cumbria. He has performed at festivals, protests and spoken word nights, in the Houses of Parliament, The Poetry Society and at TedxDoncaster. He became a National Youth Poetry Slam Champion (SLAMbassador) in 2018.

ZOSIA WAND Zosia Wand is an author and playwright whose stories are rooted in the landscape of South Cumbria.

Her commissions include a number of plays for Radio 4, including The Treehouse, a five part thriller (Radio Times Pick Of The Week).

LUKE WRIGHT Luke Wright is one of Britain’s most celebrated live poets. He was recently dubbed the “bard of lockdown” by the Telegraph after his mammoth stint of 100 straight online gigs. He’s won a Fringe First and The Stage Award and has toured with John Cooper Clarke and The Libertines.

#BBCLocalPoets on film Since 2015 BBC Local Radio has been working in partnership with the Forward Arts Foundation and a poet in each local area to create a new poem for National Poetry Day in October. Inspired by the themes of this annual celebration of poetry, this collection of over 100 new commissions showcases local words and dialects, shares the delights of the English regions and thanks individuals for their acts of compassion during Covid-19. A selection of broadcasts featuring poets such as Hollie McNish, Caleb Femi and Jamie Thrasivoulou are presented as part of the Contains Strong Language 2020 livestream.

FRI 25 SEPT WORDSWORTH GRASMERE 19:00 - 19:45 Radio 4’s flagship arts programme raises the curtain on BBC Contains Strong Language 2020, featuring an exuberant mix of interviews, discussion, and performance including poets and writers from CSL 2020.

Broadcast from Wordsworth Grasmere and presented by Katie Popperwell, guests will include Contains Strong Language poets who will perform work specially commissioned for the largest festival of poetry and spoken word in the UK. Front Row has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 since 1998 and is broadcast every weekday at 19:15.

The Alfred Bradley Bursary Award is a £5,000 bursary for Northern writers new to radio established in 1992. The winning writer also receives a 12 month mentorship with a BBC Radio Drama producer and the opportunity to gain a BBC Radio 4 drama commission.

Radio 3’s cabaret of the word, featuring the best poetry, new writing and performance including poets and writers from CSL 2020. Ian McMillan presents the show from Wordsworth Grasmere, with guests Hussain Manawer, Helen Mort, Kim Moore and Luke Wright.

Wordsworth Grasmere bring art and literature alive for tens of thousands of people every year. As well as Dove Cottage and its neighbouring historic buildings, they look after an important collection of works by Wordsworth and other writers and artists of the period.

EMERGENCY FRI 25 SEPT BROADCAST ON BBC RADIO 4 Jacob Polley tells BBC Radio Cumbria how and why he wrote Emergency; a play which focuses on climate change, flooding and connecting with the past. Jacob reads extracts of poetry from the storm sequence bringing the terrifying power of the weather to life.

Excerpts from the recorded drama, which airs on Radio 4 and available on BBC Sounds, will see Jacob’s words accompanied by an original score by world renowned sound artists Strijbos & Van Rijswijk.

Emergency is a drama that explores our relationship with the non-human world, explores survival – the stubborn survival of people and language – and creation itself through games of words played by people living at the end of the world.

SAT 26 SEPT BBC RADIO CUMBRIA FROM 11:15 Four local poets have been commissioned by the BBC & the Kirkby Lonsdale Poetry Festival to write on Ruskin’s View. The famous beauty spot in the town of Kirkby Lonsdale overlooks the River Lune and is one of the most celebrated landmarks in Cumbria.

Local poets Katie Hale, Karen Lloyd, Hannah Hodgson and Matt Sowerby have been commissioned to provide their own creative response to Ruskin’s View, exploring the landscape through the perspective of their own personal experience of the view and their relationship with it.

The picture so impressed the 19th century painter, poet and theorist John Ruskin, that he wrote: “I do not know in all my country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.” In 1875 he called it “one of the loveliest views in England, therefore in the world.” Helen Mort leads a conversation between poets Katie Hale, Karen Lloyd, Hannah Hodgson and Matt Sowerby, who have been commissioned to provide their own creative response to Ruskin’s View.

Join us in the atmospheric surroundings of the Tullie House garden as it’s lit by flickering candlelight for Kate Clanchy’s stunning take on Coleridge’s unfinished work Christabel. Kate combines music and beat-boxing to bring the work to life in a completely new way.

A small, socially-distanced audience will gather for an audio walk, listening to the drama whilst wandering the garden by night past light installations and flickering shadows. In Coleridge’s original poem Christabel started in 1797, a young girl meets a mysterious woman and invites her in to her castle, though all portents – dog, water, bell – strike against her.

Inside, in bed, something mysterious and unmistakeably sexual happens...

Artist Hannah Fox and film maker Richard Berry, both from Cumbria, have produced a dreamy visual accompaniment to the audio drama.

Luke Wright discovers more about Barrow through the eyes of the poets who’ve been inspired by this coastal industrial town.

Barrow propelled itself onto the map 150 years ago after the discovery of iron ore transformed Barrow-the-fishing-village, into a frontier town of the industrial revolution, earning it the title of The Chicago of the North.

Speaking to Barrow Poets Kim Moore and Kate Davis, Luke explores Barrow through those who walk in Wordsworth’s footsteps – alongside Yorkshire poet Kate Fox, bringing her own experience and work to reflect on this coastal town.

BBC CONTAINS STRONG KATE FOX: BIGGER ON THE INSIDE SUN 27 SEPT THE FORUM, BARROW 17:20 - 18:00

Poet and comedian Kate Fox once thought receiving a positive diagnosis for autism had as much a chance of happening as a female Doctor Who. As such, since the Doctor’s 13th incarnation (played by Jodie Whittaker) in 2018, Fox’s life has changed quite a bit.

This funny and smart work-in-progress show looks at autism and neurodiversity through the theme of Doctor Who, as Fox takes us through the ways the iconic sci-fi show has shaped her view of the world.

Fox is a stand-up poet and broadcaster, a regular voice on Radio 4 and a “gentle activist” and campaigner for the voices of Northerners, the working class, women and the neurodiverse to be heard.

Luke Wright is one of Britain’s most celebrated live poets. He was recently dubbed the “bard of lockdown” by The Telegraph after his mammoth stint of 100 straight online gigs. He’s won a Fringe First and The Stage Award and often tours with both John Cooper Clarke and The Libertines.

Cobbler is a sample-based electronic producer hailing from Sheffield. Debut album Cobbler_01 was released in May 2020. In their debut live show, the duo present their forthcoming album, Better Off. Cobbler’s dark beats and bold arrangements provide the perfect backdrop for Wright’s lyrics on addictive impulses, familial love, and societal breakdowns.
