Don’t do for others what they can do for themselves.

If you’ve spent time around self-help circles, you’ve probably come across the phrase “Don’t do for others what they can do for themselves.” Like so many things in life, I have a new appreciation for this sentiment now that I am a mom— especially as my kids grow older and gain more independence.

in order to let them do for themselves I have to accept that it will never be done my way and will likely take twice as long.

But if I take a deep breath and summon extra powers of patience, they can do for themselves.

By definition, the mother-child relationship is one of dependency. Your newborn baby literally can’t live without your total devotion and care. Then moment by moment, year by year, the relationship slowly, but steadily, shifts. While our kids need us for so much, ultimately our job is to allow them to grow to the point where they don’t need us at all (sniff, sniff) and are ready to launch into adulthood on their own.

For a control freak like me with codependent tendencies, that can be a challenging transition. So I try to remind myself, “Don’t do for others (my kids) what they can do for themselves.” Sometimes it’s small things like my current crusade not to answer questions they can answer themselves. “Mom, what time is it?” asks my son endlessly while standing in the kitchen surrounded by no less than three time-telling devices: microwave, oven, coffee pot—okay, the time on the coffee pot never seems to be right, but you get my drift.

Other transitions feel more significant like potty training, tying shoelaces, doing their own laundry, packing their lunches or even (gulp) learning to drive. Whatever the task,

Back to school is a great time to reevaluate what new responsibilities your child can take on. Remember that our success as moms ultimately involves us working ourselves out of a job—except for the unconditional love part; that stuff’s forever.

for back-to-school

The transition from summer to fall can be tough on kids and parents. After the excitement of new backpacks and school supplies wears off, back-to-school can be a bit of a shock to the system. Making sure kids are on track with their physical and emotional health before and during the first weeks of school can help the whole family settle into a comfortable routine.

MIND

It’s sometimes hard to remember that children are not little adults but, in many ways, different creatures entirely. As they grow, the way their minds and bodies operate require distinctly unique care and maintenance in order to function at optimal levels.

CHECK IN WITH YOUR CHILD in the weeks leading up to school, as well as periodically throughout the year. As they get older, kids may be reluctant to share their anxiety with you, so be patient.

SET ASIDE FAMILY TIME every week, in whatever form works best. Family meals or baseball games may be the only time to catch up; it's important to let children know they have a support system.

LIMIT SCREEN TIME TO AN HOUR A DAY, and make sure to turn off all devices at least an hour before bedtime

GET ENOUGH SLEEP. Teenagers, at the peak of

their growth cycle, require the most sleep—nine or more hours. It’s probably more than most of them are getting.

CHECK IN WITH YOUR DOCTOR to make sure your child is current on vaccinations and other tests, including an annual eye exam.

BODY

EAT YOUR VEGGIES. Not everyone has the same tastes, but a good rule of thumb is to eat mostly plants, some grains and lean proteins.

MOVE AROUND. Sitting in school all day is against the body’s nature to move—make sure kids get at least an hour of physical activity every day.

The best foundation for success is putting good habits into place early, and reinforcing them. Teaching a child to be an active and eager advocate for their own well-being is a lesson that will last a lifetime. Remember, you’re their first—and most influential—teacher.

Every family has their own traditions, rituals or inside jokes. What’s one of yours?

Every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas my family, the five of us, load up our dogs and head east to Central Oregon. We are a family who loves the outdoors, especially snow. We snowboard together every year as a family. We love to watch movies and I am pretty sure the staff of Regal Cinemas Old Mill expect us each season. Movies. Food.

Lounging. Snowboarding. These four things are a tradition and, without them, our seasons of togetherness would be out of sync.

We’re all moms so we know that no one is perfect all of the time, or even some of the time. Tell us about your most recent “Mother of the Year” moment.

Like many working moms, finding time to just “be” with my husband is sparse. One of my award-winning mom moments came last spring. My daughters are gymnasts and, with the amount of time they spend at the gym, it requires a village to get them to and from. So carpooling is my friend. Well, last spring both my husband and I arrived home after work at the same time. In surprise, we quickly decided to grab dinner and the conversation was amazing! Afterward, we meandered over to the grocery store clearly not tracking time, or the day of the week. As we walked in, my cell phone receives a text, “Mom, are you down the block? We can’t see the car.” As panic sets in we literally turn and run for the car, knowing we are at least 8 to 10 minutes away. I lie and say, “Nope, sorry on my way.” With husband and laughter in tow, I hauled you-know-what to the gym with my heart racing and, of course,

feeling guilty for the lie. All of the girls jump in, carpool kids and all. About two weeks later I had to come clean. All of the girls and their amazing moms laughed in realization!

No one was the wiser, but now I have a few “pick up girls” reminders on my phone calendar for my carpool days. There is nothing worse than forgetting your own kids, let alone someone else’s!

No one works harder than mom.

We know that being a mom is a full-time job. Tell us about your work or volunteerism outside of the home.

Oh boy! Me outside of the home includes executive, small business owner of three businesses, community volunteer, elected official and all around “get it done” kinda girl. My soul is entirely filled by giving of my time, skills and love. I am the Executive Director of the Keizer Chamber of Commerce, I own and operate NW Events & Promotions (11 years this October), I support my husband’s plumbing business and I am a consultant for the best darn skincare in the world: Rodan + Fields. These are the “jobs” that make me money. My nonpaying jobs include volunteering for local nonprofits, one of my favorites is the Liberty House Child Abuse Assessment Center and, in May, I won my first-ever local election and began serving my community as a School Board Director—yes this is a nonpaying job. I am an active Rotarian and I run Friday night concessions for our local high school football games.

What have you learned professionally, that has helped you as a mom?

No one person’s success is the same. As moms, we want our children to succeed, but mommag.com 11

we often agonize over their path and direction. In my career I have learned so much about other professionals. Learning about their journeys and seeing their results has allowed me to relax and find comfort in knowing that, even if my kids struggle from time to time, that current struggle doesn’t define their results.

How do you balance (or not) motherhood, activities, work, volunteering, household responsibilities, and life in general?

Typically, what falls through the cracks?

My kids are in this life with me! I have my hand in a lot of pots and, more often than not, you will see one of my kids at my side.

The one area in my life I have had to succumb to is laundry. Good God, laundry is

the root of all evil! It never ends and I absolutely hate folding and putting it away.

So I don’t. I have found peace in what I call the “laundry chair.” If you can’t find what you need in a drawer—or on your floor since I have teenagers—then it’s likely on the chair. Good luck finding it!

Tell us about a recent achievement you’re proud of, or a personal passion or talent.

I am very proud of the journey and commitment I made to myself to achieve my degree from Oregon State University. It was a very expensive, disorganized path but, in the end, I learned some of the most valuable lessons in my life and I got the degree.

children, husband and my mom were watching, well, there are no words to share that emotion.

Tell us about your upbringing. How did it shape the mother you are today?

I grew up in a single mother household with one older sister. I went to five elementary schools from Eugene, OR to Phoenix-Talent, AZ and back to Salem, OR; two middle schools in California and Oregon and, finally, in high school I made my own roots at McKay High School. My mother struggled with her mental health and could never

really find “home.” I became the princess of packing. The three of us could pack up an entire apartment in just a few hours! To this day I have no fear of moving furniture or appliances twice my size; after all, my mom always taught me to use what I have and, regularly, that was just what I possessed at the time.

spaces in a few of my friends’ homes. The parents of my friends never asked questions, they just applied one requirement: to graduate high school! The journey was long for me and I learned a lot about society— where to be and not be, what to say and not say and, most important, how to act and present oneself.

In high school my mom chose to continue her journey and move along and I didn’t follow her. Eventually, she didn’t return. We lost touch for several years. I was blessed, truly blessed, to be taught by her to be useful, polite and, above all else, to respect my elders. She showed me how to survive and to never settle. Those tools secured me living

Today I can confidently parent my children having seen and lived what the “bottom” looks like for many struggling moms. If my children’s lives never brush up against the journey I’ve walked well, for me, that will be a success.

What are three words your kids would use to describe you?

I sent them each a text asking them to give me the three words. Here they are: Beautiful. Supportive. Loving. Boy, if that doesn’t make a momma glow nothing will!

What is one thing you never had that you want for your kids.

Predictable family traditions they can share with their own children.

What are three words your best friend would use to describe you?

Determined. Passionate. Loyal. An important fourth: direct.

“When you do good, you feel good!” This applies to so many aspects of life— spiritually, mentally, physically etc. I remind myself and my kids of this often.

Follow your instincts.

If you could instantly have one new skill what would it be?

Oh I love, love this question. I so very much want to learn Spanish and, heck, if it could be instantaneous, sign me up! I am missing out on so much by not being able to communicate with everyone around me. And maybe Vietnamese too!

What’s your superpower?

I would have to say my smile, I know it might not seem like a “power” but, let me tell you, my entire life people have commented on my smile. I believe what they are really seeing is my heart. I have a deep love for people, community and connection and, as one of my best friends puts it “getting sh*t done.” I do just about everything in my life through feelings. I have said once or twice in the heat of persuasion, “There is nothing wrong with feeling your way through life. Try it, something might change!”

What keeps you up at night (apart from kids, of course)?

Well, last night I lay in bed pondering how I am going to make a difference in the lives of 43,000 students who attend Salem-Keizer Public Schools.

Seriously, how can I, little ol' me, find a way to return the innocence we have robbed these children of? I had to get out of bed and go for a “house walk.” Yep, I do this. If I can’t shut my brain off, then I eventually drag myself out of bed and walk around my house. Last night I spent the journey turning off all of the lights the dang kids left on and closed the back patio door that was left wide open for all the racoons in the neighborhood to wander through.

What keeps you sane?

My friends. I have the most amazing core group of friends who love every crazy idea I come up with and every blunt statement or remark that comes out of my mouth. I am fiercely loyal and God has blessed me with some of the most amazing friends who truly have my back.

Outside of your family members, who/what inspires you to be better?

My mom passed away a few years ago, suddenly. She had so much more life in her to give and now she is gone. Every time I sit and ponder the challenges and struggles of whatever it is I am doing or need to be doing, I think of her—her perseverance, her courage and how I want to make her proud. I

want to give her a legacy through my actions.

Yes, she came back into my life. Through hard work we reconnected, briefly, before she passed. I want her to be here so much it hurts, but I know in my heart she sees me and she’s standing behind me every time I trip in my path—and is cheering me on.

Message from mom What advice would you give your younger mom self—what do you wish you knew then that you know now?

If I could talk to my younger self I would say, “Just enjoy the moments, all of them. If you end up going to the grocery store and your kids aren’t neat and tidy, at least you made it out of the house. Be sure to sit in the

moments that strike you most, take them in and store the memories, because it all happens so quickly, you will forget!”

What message would you like to share with other moms?

Ladies we got this. Not one of us is the same, but we are in this together. Lean out. Ask for help. Be honest. We are not perfect; we won’t raise the same kids. Stop competing with each other or comparing your child to another. The world is begging for individuality, encourage yourself and your child to find what makes their heart sing and run at it like a bear is chasing you through a forest.

Life is short. So, go make it happen. Don’t waste your time waiting for someone to make your dreams come true, only you can do that!

Of course, routine maintenance is the best way to avoid having your car break down. But at some point, despite your best efforts, you’ll likely have car trouble on the road. Here are some tips for keeping you and your family safe: Never get out of the vehicle to make a repair or examine the damage on the spot. Get the vehicle to a safe place before getting out.

If you can’t drive the car, it may still be safer to stay in the car and wait for help or use a cell phone to summon help.

Carry flares or triangles to mark your location once you get to the side of the road. Marking your vehicle’s location to give other drivers advance warning of your location can be critical. Remember to turn on your hazard lights.

In the case of a blowout or a flat tire, move the vehicle to a safer place before attempting a repair—even if it means destroying the wheel getting there. The cost of a tire, rim or wheel is minor compared to a fatal injury.

Roadside tragedies remind us of the importance of having wide shoulders or safe places immediately available for motorists to use when they need them. When safe places are not readily available, motorists should move their vehicles to the nearest safe pull-off area.

Toothpaste batik Supplies: Scrap paper Embroidery hoop Pencil

Instructions:

Hand lotion White fabric or muslin Squeeze bottle Paint brush

Sharpie pen

Permanent tempera or acrylic paint

White toothpaste

Select your embroidery hoop size and trace your circle. Then kids can begin drawing their ideas on to scrap paper.

Tape your picture to a piece of cardboard or hard surface and trace with a black Sharpie marker. Make sure there is something under your art in case the Sharpie bleeds through.

Then, tape a piece of white fabric over the drawing. The Sharpie lines should be visible through the fabric. Doing it this way, means there are no pencil lines on the fabric.

Mix toothpaste and aloe hand lotion together in squeeze bottles. The ratio is 1-to-1. It doesn't have to be exact, you just don’t want it runny. I found the lotion and toothpaste at Dollar Tree and used glue bottles for squeeze bottles. You can use glue instead of the toothpaste-lotion mix, but it is less precise and the glue lines can seep together making it blobby looking.

Right before use, shake your bottle, then trace over your lines beginning at the top so you don’t smudge your work.

What is batik?

It takes about 24 hours to dry and will feel rubbery when dry.

Batik is both an art and a craft, which is becoming more popular and well known in the West as a wonderfully creative medium. Paint directly onto your fabric. Tempera paint is best because it drys soft while acrylic dries hard. Try your favorite brand, but remember: DO NOT USE WASHABLE PAINT! You can paint right over the toothpaste/lotion lines.

Let the paint dry. To remove the toothpaste mix, run the fabric under warm water and rub gently. If you used glue instead of the toothpaste mix, soak in warm water for about an hour.

Add additional details as desired with Sharpie markers. Insert into the embroidery hoops, hang and enjoy.

school CRISPIEST BREADED CHICKEN PREP TIME 5 MINUTES

COOKING TIME 6 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS 1/2 CUP (65 g) all-purpose flour

1 large egg 3/4 CUP (60 g) panko

breadcrumbs or regular breadcrumbs

1 TEASPOON fine sea salt 1/2 TEASPOON ground black pepper

4 pieces thin-cut boneless,

skinless chicken breast or cutlets

2 TABLESPOONS canola or vegetable oil, plus more if needed

NOTE: You can substitute the

chicken with a white fish, such as cod, tilapia, or sole. The cooking time is about the same.

SERVES 4

DIRECTIONS 1

Put the flour, egg, and breadcrumbs in 3 separate shallow bowls.

2 Whisk the egg until it is a uniform yellow color with no streaks of egg white or yolk.

3 Add the salt and pepper to the bread-

crumbs and stir until mixed thoroughly.

4 Place each piece of chicken in the flour and turn to coat in a thin layer of flour.

5 Dip and flip each flour-coated piece of chicken in the egg mixture so that it is completely covered with egg.

6 Place each egg-coated piece of chicken in the breadcrumb mixture and turn to completely coat in breadcrumbs.

7 Heat a cast-iron skillet or any heavy-

bottomed pan over medium-high heat.

8 Add the oil and heat until a drop of egg

sizzles when added to the pan. If you are using a large pan, you might need to use extra oil.

9 Add the chicken and cook, flipping once, until golden brown all over, 2 to 3 minutes per side. If you use thicker pieces of chicken, you will need to cook it for longer. Add extra oil to the pan between batches as needed.

10 Remove the chicken from the pan and let it sit in a paper towel to remove excess oil.

MAKE THE PIZZA 1

Preheat the oven to its highest setting, usually 550oF (285oC). Place a pizza stone or baking sheet on the middle rack of the oven and let it heat up for 5 minutes.

Using the dough hook, mix the ingredients on low for 2 minutes. Increase the speed to medium and knead until the dough is smooth and elastic, about 1 to 2 minutes. Form the dough into a ball. You can also knead the dough by hand; see step 5 in the recipe for Back to Basics Bread (page 45) for kneading instructions.

Dust a pizza peel or large cutting board with cornmeal or flour. Using your fingers and knuckles, gently stretch a ball of dough into an 8- to 10-inch (20 to 25 cm) circle and place on the prepared pizza peel.

Put the dough in a clean medium bowl that’s been lightly oiled with vegetable or canola oil.

Cover the bowl with a clean, damp tea towel (or plastic wrap). This prevents the dough from getting a hard crust while it rises. Let the dough rise at room temperature for 30 minutes.

Spread 2 to 3 tablespoons of tomato sauce or pesto evenly on the dough using the back of a spoon. Tear 2 1⁄2 ounces (70 grams) of mozzarella into small (roughly 1-inch / 2.5 cm) pieces and scatter over the tomato sauce. Add toppings, if desired.

Drizzle with 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of olive oil and sprinkle with a pinch of salt to taste.

With the help of an adult, slide the dough onto the pizza stone in the oven. Bake until the crust is lightly brown and the cheese is bubbling, 3 to 5 minutes.

Remove the pizza from the oven and cool for 1 minute. Top with Parmigiano- Reggiano and basil, if using, and serve whole or cut into quarters.

In a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment, or in a large bowl, combine the yeast and warm water then add the flour, olive oil, salt, and sugar.

Divide the dough into six equal portions and shape each portion into a round ball. Place the balls of dough on a lightly floured work surface, cover with the damp tea towel, and let sit for 15 minutes.
