50 Years worth shouting about
For many, George Carpenter will have been the town crier for longer than they’ve been alive. After half a century in the role he is as much a part of Wotton-under-Edge as the clock tower or the war memorial. To hear him tell it the role didn’t come about overnight.

Tesco Job Losses FIVE JOBS are to go with four more part-time contracts not being renewed, according to a whistleblower from Wotton’s branch of Tesco. The tip-off, which warns of frustrating times ahead for customers, appears to have caught Tesco management on the hop. The Wotton Times asked Tesco’s media office if it could confirm our whistleblower’s claims that Wotton’s Tesco Express will see: • Five redundancies of staff, including a mother and daughter who together have served in the store for thirty years • Four cancelled contracts with students who are usually hired to cope with busier holiday traffic
Wotton has never demanded anything from me at all. Never. It doesn’t matter who’s been mayor, they’ve never asked anything from me
• Closure of one of the tills, leaving just one staffed till and the self-service till.

“When I first became crier, I was taking part in a production of Robin Hood with the Wotton Amateur Dramatics Society,” recalls George. “I was one of the merry men. During rehearsals the organisers asked me if I’d like to go out and advertise the show.”
George subsequently began going out on weekends to help promote the activities of different organisations across the town. “Scouts, Guides, the schools, whoever had anything on… I’d go out on a Saturday morning and give them a bit of a boost with an advert for what they were doing, and that’s how it started off. “I found out that the town trust had the old town crier’s hat and coat, which Mr Lewis Allen, the previous town crier, used to wear.” The crier’s hat and coat were in the care of Oliver Mills, then resident on Church Street. “I went to Oliver and asked if I could use the uniform. He said ‘Of course you can’t.’” Continued on page 4

• A new timetable that sees a “one on one” staffing level – one customer assistant and one shift leader making up the entire workforce from 10.30am.
When asked about the changes, a Tesco spokesperson said they couldn’t comment on the details for Wotton: “We are still undergoing a consultation with colleagues across the UK affected by the changes to our Metro and Express stores, so we’re not yet in a position to share details of changes in individual stores until this process has been completed.” Continued on page 3
