More lanes coming to Reams, other Horizon West roads Orange County currently is in the design phase of an improvement project for the southwest roadway used by many Disney cast members.

The two-lane Reams Road, with its many twists and curves, is a driver’s nightmare, and it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better. But there is a plan in place.

The road in Horizon West frequented by Walt Disney World cast members is on the list of Orange County roads projects and currently is in the design phase. About 60% of the design is completed for the 2.8-mile section.

The plan is to widen the road to four lanes from Summerlake Park Boulevard to Taborfield Avenue and add a raised median. Also in the construction plans are a fivefoot-wide sidewalk on the south side of the road and a 14-footwide multi-use trail on the north side. The project also will incorporate drainage improvements, lighting, landscaping and a wildlife crossing Construction plans should be completed in early 2022, according to Orange County. The timeline of construction calls for work to start in fall 2024 and end in fall 2026.

The Fourth of July is on a weekend this year, and many residents are making plans to observe Independence Day with backyard barbecues and fireworks with friends and family. In and around West Orange County, folks can celebrate on multiple days and enjoy everything from live music, games and a 5K to pancake breakfasts, a children’s parade and fireworks.

WINTER GARDEN

The city of Winter Garden is hosting a weekend of Americana starting Friday, July 2, with Red White & Blues on the Plaza — a live performance featuring blues music from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Centennial Plaza in the center of downtown.

The Winter Garden Farmers Market Independence Day Celebration is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturday, July 3, at the Downtown Pavilion, 104 S. Lakeview Ave. It will include a vendor booth patriotic contest, live music and a lifesize family game zone.

On Sunday, July 4, the festivities start in the morning and end after dark.

The Winter Garden Masonic Lodge is bringing back its annual pancake breakfast, and starting at 8 a.m., families can enjoy flapjacks in the lodge dining hall, 230 W. Bay St. Children eat free and adults pay $5 for pancakes, sausage, fruit and a variety of drinks. Soul Haven Ranch will be there with horses. Booths will be set up, including a childidentification opportunity and a

chance for children to grab some free decorations for their bikes, scooters and wagons.

Afterward, children can participate in their very own parade. The 17th annual All-American Kids Parade lines up at 9:45 for a festive stroll down downtown Plant Street.

The event is sponsored by the Winter Garden Masonic Lodge, Winter Garden Heritage Foundation and Winter Garden Downtown Merchants. For information, call (407) 656-3244.

The annual Fourth of July Pancake Breakfast returns in Windermere from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday, July 4.

To celebrate the return, the town is waiving ticket fees this year.

The fireworks are back at Walt Disney World, just in time for the July 4 weekend. Starting, July 1, the nightly shows take place at two theme parks.

The Magic Kingdom show, “Happily Ever After,” features Cinderella Castle as the main character through technology and projection.

Familiar Disney characters also are part of the show, as are contemporary versions of Disney songs and pyrotechnics.

At Epcot, the “Epcot Forever” show takes place over the World Showcase Lagoon with lasers, kites, fireworks and special effects as children narrate the story. Familiar theme park music adds to the excitement.

The Clermont Freedom 5K walk and run is July 4 in downtown Clermont. The race kicks off at 7:30 a.m. at the Clermont Historic Village Museum, 490 West Ave., and finishes at Suncreek Brewery.

Jennifer Hunt, managing director of the Oakland Nature Preserve, presented an annual report to the commission, thanking the town for its commitment to the preserve during the pandemic.

Education is one of the primary goals of ONP, and in a typical year, students frequent the preserve through school field trips and various camps.

For most of 2020 and the first half of 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic kept students away from the preserve, so educators made weekly visits to Oakland Avenue Charter School to continue the relationship, Hunt said.

n Town Manager Steve Koontz announced a meeting July 8 with residents to update them about the septic-tosewer process. The town has received $1.7 million in grant monies for the major project.

“We’ve got this project funded, and I think we’re going to be able to cover the costs of all those residents, not just the low to moderate income,” he said.

The town currently handles its wastewater through septic tanks and drain fields; some of them were installed as early as the 1950s.

By building a centralized sewer system in the town, Oakland will be able to create more than 5,000 jobs and bring more economic opportunities to the town. n The commission approved a drainage agreement with the Oakland Pointe Homeowners Association. Commissioner Rick Polland recused himself from the vote because he lives in the neighborhood. n Commissioners passed three public hearings pertaining to the annexation, Comp Plan amendment and industrial rezoning of the 6.65-acre Cra-Mar Groves Inc. property south of West Colonial Drive for mini-warehouse development in the future.

An outreach was established at Dillard Street Elementary School, as well.

There was a focus on adult education courses in the past year, and seven Florida Master Naturalist Certification courses were offered via Zoom. Hunt said 143 adults participated in the online class.

Despite there being no official sign-ins during the pandemic, she said, the preserve experienced an increase in preserve guests who were looking for something to do outdoors.

Volunteers have showed up, too, providing about 6,000 hours restoring the preserve, working as museum docents, and providing office and data entry work.

Hunt reported on current funding and announced two major projects. The West Orange Healthcare District funded the renovation of the Healthy West Orange Boardwalk, and private foundations are paying for additions to the porch and bathroom.

Oakland folks will have to get used to a different recycling pickup day starting Aug. 1, when Waste Management shifts from Friday to Wednesday. Garbage pickup will remain on Fridays, and yard waste will continue to be picked up on Wednesdays.

Waste Management acquired the previous collector, Advanced Disposal, in October. Representatives asked for the change in days at the June 22 Oakland Town Commission meeting because it would make pickup more efficient with the increased number of homes on the route. It also addresses concerns residents have had about the haulers combining trash and recycling.

Waste Management will send postcards out notifying residents of the change.

The company has a program called Recycle Often Recycle Right to simplify what can and cannot be recycled. Clean bottles, cans, paper and cardboard can be recycled; food and liquid should be kept out of the recycling; and loose plastic bags and bagged recyclables are not accepted.

he tattoo gun in Billy Slaughter’s right hand buzzes with a light hum as he slowly emblazons an old-timey sailing ship on a client’s shoulder.

It’s a little after 5 p.m. on a Saturday, and for most, the idea of having to work on a weekend is a nightmare. But for Billy Slaughter, it’s not so much a job as it is the realization and culmination of a lifelong journey.

There, at Slaughterized Ink Tattoo and Piercing Studio — located on Story Road in Ocoee — the duo of Billy Slaughter and his fiancée, Jessica Slaughter, has built something it’s proud of.

“I’ve been tattooing since 2000, so I’ve worked in a number of different studios in the Central Florida area, and it’s always been kind of a dream of mine to have my own spot,” Billy Slaughter said. “My fiancée kind of took the dream on as a co-signer with it, and together we’ve been able to open a business, and it took off really well, and it’s doing good.”

LEARNING THE ART

One doesn’t just become a tattoo artist or professional piercer overnight — it’s something that requires time and effort learning every aspect you can.

In the case of Billy Slaughter, his love of tattoos spawned out of a love of drawing — which he’s done since he was a kid. With a natural talent for looking at something — or sometimes coming up with an idea — and drawing it, he would be a natural fit for the world of tattooing.

Back in 2000, one of Billy Slaughter’s good friends was a tattoo artist. He asked Billy Slaughter to draw certain custom designs and said he’d pay him back in tattoo work.

“Being around the tattoo studio and all that, some of the other guys who were working there at the time started seeing the drawings that I was doing, and they were telling me, ‘Man, you need to be tattooing — I don’t know why you’re just drawing stuff for this dude,’” Billy Slaughter said. “So one of them did a little six-month crash course in how to do tattoos with me, and I’ve been doing it ever since.”

it operated. Through the years, he’d also learn that everyone’s skin is different and aspects like smoothness and elasticity played a role in how you tattoo, he said.

“Every canvas, as far as skin goes, is different — it moves, it bleeds, it changes colors … so it’s totally different than just sitting down with a piece of paper and you can erase if you make a mistake,” Billy Slaughter said. “It’s one of those things that, for me, (in) the first five minutes of working on a different person, I kind of figure it out — what kind of skin, what kind of technique I need to be using for this particular kind of skin.”

ally make his way into the tattoo world full time 12 years ago after his boss at his old day job made him mad. He proceeded to take his portfolio around to a few different studios — all of which wanted him onboard. From there, Billy Slaughter found his way through the world of tattooing.

learning the intrinsic nature of piercing — and it was slightly stressful, Jessica Slaughter said.

“I was thrown in the deep end and had to swim — it was sink or swim,” Jessica Slaughter said. “So the person that was apprenticing me was on and off — he would be here a couple of times a week toward the evening time — but then honestly for the rest of it, I’m really self-taught as far as handson, and I’ve done a lot of research.

“I’m really proud of what I’ve established, because, yes, some of them are from Bill — clients of his who want piercings — but other than that, I have made a name for myself,” she said.

Jessica Slaughter recalled those first piercings she did and how it felt like her heart was going to explode, but she never let it get to her. In fact, it got easier as time passed and as she developed her clientele base. It was a job that came naturally, which Billy Slaughter said wasn’t a surprise at all.

Since opening last November, the studio has become a big part of their lives. For the Slaughters, a big part about this fairly new adventure is making a living doing something they like, while also providing for their five children.

And given the artistic genetics, the hope is that maybe one day they’ll keep the legacy going into the future.

“We’re building an empire — this is just the first stone as to a dream that we’re accomplishing,” Jessica Slaughter said. “It’s just the beginning.”

W.G. gets rights of way for road project Winter Garden leaders approved two right of way acquisitions to make room for proposed improvements to the State Road 429/Plant Street interchange.

At the June 23 City Commission meeting, Planning Consultant Ed Williams told commissioners the Central Florida Expressway Authority has been making substantial investments for improvements in the Winter Garden area for the last decade. That includes the recent addition of on and off ramps to Stoneybrook West Parkway.

Although CFX is now proposing major improvements to the S.R. 429/Plant Street interchange, Williams said, it needed to acquire more right of way to do so. “(For) many of those improvements, the basis was the city going to the Expressway Authority, and now it’s gotten to the point where they’re coming to us with projects,” Williams said. “The city has always been willing to participate financially in those projects, and again, on this project, they were asking for some participation, which was to acquire the right of way.”

Williams said CFX currently has a program in the works with an estimated 20 to 30 projects under its umbrella. The S.R. 429/Plant Street interchange improvements fall under this program.

However, he said, by the time CFX gave city staff the right of way drawings, “it would’ve been physically impossible to condemn properties to get that right of way.”

“They came to the city and said, ‘Your participation is to acquire the right of way for us’ — both the city of Ocoee, and us and our jurisdictions,” Williams said.

Winter Garden had to acquire two pieces of right of way for the project. The first required 15,442 square feet of right of way on Plant Street from Winter Garden Property, LLC, also known as the Strates property. The second requires 2,854 square feet of right of way on Plant Street from Ocoee Business Park, LLC. Williams said the Strates family has been involved with Plant Street widening efforts in the past. The piece of right of way needed from them is a strip along the frontage that will allow for widening of the road and sufficient turn lanes at the intersection. The objective is to improve traffic flow in the area.

“We have previously worked with these property owners, so we have good relationships, and we’re here at the last minute finally with the agreements for your consideration,” Williams said.

Williams said the city would purchase the right of way from the Strates for

“As you know how properties at interchanges are valued, we believe we’re getting a very good deal in this, and the property owners recognize that those improvements make their properties even more valuable, so they’ve come to a reasonable accommodation on this one,” Williams said.

“These funds will be coming from impact fees, so when this property is developed, they will pay a significant more amount in impact fees to cover this cost,” added City Manager Mike Bollhoefer.

HOUSE ACQUISITION

Commissioners also unanimously approved purchasing the house and property at 1175 Lincoln Terrace in east Winter Garden.

As part of the area’s redevelopment program, city staff recommended acquiring commercial and residential properties.

Buying this house, Williams said, would assist in negotiations on other properties identified in the plan for acquisition and redevelopment.

“We’re looking for properties for housing units, we’re looking for properties for utilities for drainage improvements, we’re looking at properties for sidewalk, and some of the property owners that we’re approaching to acquire the property are looking to trade rather than just purchase the property,” Williams said. “If they have a home and want to stay in that community, they’re saying, ‘Find us a home and trade us a home.’”

The house on Lincoln Terrace will be added to the city’s inventory when staff approaches someone about trading properties. Williams said it was reviewed by the building department, and there are about five hours’ worth of electrical work and two to three hours of roofing work that needs to be done.

t was a week full of epic battles and epic fun as Church of the Messiah in Winter Garden hosted its Vacation Bible School, themed “Epic Battles of the Bible.” Children’s Minister Angela Lopez was the mastermind behind the curriculum, which taught children about biblical battles and the armor of God. Those attending each night enjoyed dinner, music, story time, games, crafts and dancing.

A student’s perspective on ‘the COVID year’ This senior at The First Academy reflects on the unusual 2020-21 school year and is optimistic for her last year of high school.

We made it! While looking back on the crazy year that students and teachers both faced, I think we all can agree that this was a school year unlike any other. From sports to academics to extracurriculars, students and teachers alike endured many changes to the “normal” daily school life.

But we all persevered through this crazy year, and I think I can speak for all students when I say this year made us much more appreciative of the little

Groups of people getting quarantined and sent home to learn virtually online became normal during this far-from-normal school year. The nature of sporting events became the most prevalent change to me.

At my school, sports are a big deal, and we highschoolers look forward to packing the stands in support of our team at home games (and even at away games, too). When space became limited at these games, students raced to sign up to secure their ticket, hoping they were able to secure a seat.

All in all, at the conclusion of this year that was less than ideal, there were a few lessons I learned and things I took out of these

unpredictable circumstances. I believe we all learned to never take for granted the small things that would normally go unnoticed. For example, the ability to be allowed to tightly pack the stands at a basketball game or even something as small as seeing the smile of a friend in the hallway.

In years following this crazy one, normal things will become more exciting for teachers and students, and I now look forward for the year to come more than ever before. In hopes for life to have some normalcy again, I am excited and lucky that I will hopefully get to have a normal senior year before moving on to college.

Lily is 11 years old and will be a seventh-grader at Windermere Preparatory School this fall. Her favorite school subject is writing, and her favorite class is called “Opening the Book.”

Lily enjoys writing about different types of fantasias, and in her spare time, she likes to read, write and ride her bike with her family.

If she could go anywhere in the world right now, she would choose France because she is interested in learning more about the French culture and viewing the large collection of art the country displays in its museums.

“I have an interest in being a writer or publisher and felt this would be a wonderful way for me to learn more about the process a writer follows for a publication,” Lily said of being part of the Summer School Zone team.

I will never forget my first day of junior year. The “COVID year,” as we call it now. This was a first day of school unlike any other I have experienced. Lots of questions and uncertainty about the upcoming year filled the minds and conversations between students.

The wearing of masks was the first big change that stood out to me. When we could previously see smiles from teachers and students displaying the excitement for the school year to come, that was now all covered up by a piece of fabric. When we could previously work with others during group work in class, this quickly no longer became a possibility because of physical barriers and social distancing.

In the 1950s, Maxey Elementary School for African American students lacked a marching band.

Dr. Lawson, as an adult, secured donations to buy band instruments and, from Haimowitz’s Mercantile Store at the corner of Plant and Main Streets, white band uniforms set off with red sashes.

At the Christmas parade that year, the band played for the first time.

The mission of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is to preserve the heritage and architecture of Winter Garden while creating new cultural experiences. The Winter Garden Squeeze slipped by the Leesburg Lightning in a 1-0 win Saturday, June 26. A big part of the win for the Squeeze was a solid outing from pitchers Michael Ross and Jordan Winston. Ross struck out five and allowed only four hits through full five innings, while Winston struck out three while allowing only one hit in two innings of work. At the plate, Bryce Jackson led the way, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

fter a grueling 12 hours of in-person tryouts, rising UCF sophomore Jessica Lyle found herself enjoying some team bonding as she sat in a circle with some of the other girls.

Since 9 a.m., these hopeful athletes had endured hour after hour of showcasing their stunting and tumbling skills, all for the chance to earn a spot on the prestigious UCF cheer squad.

Then, out of the blue, something happened that Lyle said she was not expecting — she made the final cut.

“The coaches came over and they were like, ‘OK, whoever is left that is sitting here is the team,’” Lyle said. “And then they brought over a box that had all of our shirts in it. I was shocked because I wasn’t

A rising sophomore on the Foundation Academy boys basketball team, Jacob Crain most recently dominated for the Lions during the recent FA Summer Shootout. In the tournament, which saw the Lions go 9-1 — falling in the championship game — Crain finished with 14 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.

When did you first get into basketball?

I transferred from Bridgewater to Foundation my seventh-grade year, and I tried out for the team and made it, and that’s all that really happened. I fell in love with the sport.

What was it about basketball that you loved so much?

All of my teammates have been motivating me and pushing me to get better, and I find the competitive nature of basketball is something that I really enjoy.

What is your favorite part about playing at small forward? Your least favorite part?

My favorite part about playing the position is sometimes some of the plays we run, I’m either a decision-maker or they’ll feed me in the post when we need to get going.

My least favorite part is when I usually guard the other team’s tallest player.

What is the most challenging aspect of playing basketball?

I’d say the most challenging part is reading defenses and making the right decision when we’re on offense.

Do you have a highlight moment during your time at Foundation?

There was one game we played against Seven Rivers, and the reason it stands out to me is because our whole team was excited to play, and we sent it to double overtime and ended up winning 100 to 95. Our whole team was just working really well to get a comeback going, even though we lost players to foul trouble.

What did you and the team get out of the most recent FA Summer Shootout tournament?

The main goal of the tournament, like coach said, was for all of our players to prepare for the regular season. I feel like, with the competition, it was great to get ready for the upcoming season — even though some of the teams we won’t play — and it showed our team what we needed to improve on to go far in upcoming division tournaments.

The regular season is a while off, but are there any goals you hope to accomplish?

I’d love for us to become district champions and make it to the regional and, hopefully, state tournament. And, like my sister (Abigail Crain), in my high school basketball career, I want to score 1,000 points.

Is having a family member who is great at the same sport a motivator for you?

It’s great; she has helped me improve my game a lot, and it’s a real motivator to not be the second best in the family.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I like to hang out with friends and lift weights — sometimes I’ll go lifting with my friends at the Y or something.

really expecting anything going into tryouts — I was just doing my best and going for it.”

SEEKING A CHALLENGE

When Lyle was just 2 years old, she found a creative outlet for herself through dance, which lasted until sixth grade when something changed. She wanted to challenge herself with something new, and that’s how cheerleading came into her life.

In seventh grade, Lyle had talked with some folks who were in All-Star cheer, so she decided to join the Top Gun All-Stars.

“I started at the very bottom, because I had no cheer experience,” Lyle said. “And then I was doing All-Star for seventh grade and eighth grade — so I was on the Level 1 team my seventhgrade year, then my eighthgrade year I skipped a level and went to the Level 3 team.”

The time at Top Gun paid off immediately, and Lyle found herself on the varsity squad at West Orange High in her freshman year. That same year, she decided to drop from All-Star and focus on high school cheer.

During those four years on the sideline — and in competition — Lyle grew as a cheerleader and overcame some of those early stressors that pop up when you’re front and center with all eyes on you.

“I wasn’t used to doing cheers and dances and stuff on the

sidelines in front of a bunch of people,” Lyle said. “At first, I had no idea of what I was doing, and I felt stupid, and so I had some of the girls help me because I had to learn all new stuff.

“I’m used to being in front of people because of dancing and cheering, but it’s just like, everyone is staring down at you, and you’re doing cheers,” Lyle said. “As a little freshman, it was very intimidating, but then I ended up loving it, and my favorite thing about cheer was football games.”

U-C-F KNIGHTS

Learning to overcome the fears of the spotlight ended up proving to be a big help for Lyle in the process of becoming a UCF cheerleader.

The first step required Lyle to submit a video that included a short interview of herself, as well as her performing stunt and tumbling with a friend she had made on the team. A week later — on May 14 — she got the news that she had moved onto the inperson tryout that would take place June 4.

Leading up to that big tryout, Lyle said, she spent every single day of the week practicing her stunting and tumbling.

By the time of tryout day, Lyle was stressed out, but once she got in there, she knew what she had to do.

“Throughout the day, it was just staying focused, and you have to give 110% the whole

day — there was no 50% or any of that,” Lyle said. “If you want to make the team, you have to put absolutely everything into everything that we did. We had evaluations throughout the day, so before lunch, we had an evaluation for stunting, and then we had another evaluation at the very end of the day.

“I was so exhausted,” she said. “I felt like I couldn’t think straight, and I was like, kind of forgetting what I was doing because I was so tired. But I just had to keep going, and we stunted so much, and once I got through it, I was so relieved because I did all my stunts.”

By the end of the day, Lyle’s focus and talent helped pave a way to a new adventure that she is more than excited to start.

The team is already going through practices now, and she knows that she’ll be cheering for football, basketball and volleyball when the new sports season starts. For Lyle, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months.

“I’m looking forward to really forming a family with the team — that’s honestly what I’m most excited for, because I’ve met everyone on the team, and they all seem super nice, and I just can’t wait to make friendships with them,” Lyle said. “Then, of course, I’m excited for football games because that’s just going to be a whole new thing to me.”

On Friday, June 25, 2021, Verna Jeannette Cobia passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 90.

Verna was born on March 12, 1931, in Opp, Alabama.

She moved to Winter Garden, Florida, when she was in grade school.

On May 6, 1951, she married the love of her life, Barnell “Larry” Cobia of Winter Garden. Verna and Larry were married for 52 years until his death on Aug. 16, 2003. In addition to raising their four sons together, they founded B.L. Cobia, Inc., a wholesale horticulture business where they bred hybrid plants and were awarded more than 40 U.S. and foreign plant patents.

Verna later worked at Dillard’s department store in the West Oaks Mall until she retired. She was an avid quilter, enjoyed floral decorating and volunteered at the Winter Garden Heritage Museum.

Verna attended First Baptist Church of Winter Garden.

She is survived by her sons, Michael, Roger, Mark and Richard; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 1, 2021, at Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Gotha, Florida, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband.

The family requests those who wish to express sympathy consider donations to Cornerstone Hospice or a charity of choice in lieu of flowers.
