ROUND FOR A REASON

The original West Orange High School building was designed by architect Eoghan Newman Kelley, of Sanford, whose designs were based on the early-1970s trend of the open-school concept. The outer building was composed of large, simple geometric shapes with no windows, and the interior of each module was so laid out with movable walls. The modernistic design called for the library to be an open, sunken design located in the center of the complex. Nearly all the floors and many of the walls were carpeted. Classrooms were housed within an innovaSEE CIRCLE PAGE 6A

Spotlights once used in a theme park, a bright pink saddle, a turquoise chair and a stool Justin Timberlake once sat on. These are all items you could stumble upon when visiting Central Florida Furniture/Props/Sets and Staging. The store, which opened Jan. 15, is the latest project of Tim and Joyce Fake of Fake Productions. “We have everything,” Tim Fake said. “We have leftover Halloween props. We have items that were in some movies.” Fake Productions is a production support company that works with shows and other productions, often working for clients such as theme parks. When production is complete, Fake Productions often receives the props and other supplies used in production back from the client. After years of productions, the number of leftover props has created a storage problem. So the Fakes saw opening a store as a way to do something meaningful with props they no longer need. The shop is a collision of passions and talents. The range of products in the store come from the various projects the Fakes have worked on through the years of owning Fake Productions, as well as furniture and other collectible items the Fakes have gathered throughout the years. Several years ago, Joyce Fake CENTRAL FLORIDA FURNITURE/ PROPS/SETS AND STAGING FAKE PRODUCTIONS ADDRESS: 130 N. became interested in refinishing and repurposing furniture, and she picked up the hobby. “I always had the thought in my mind I would like to have a store someday,” she said. Store manager and longtime friend Robin Groves is helping to make that thought a reality. Groves also shared a similar passion for decorating furniture. In recent years, Joyce Fake’s passion for furniture has somewhat faded to make way for a new passion — Burundi Christian Ministries. But the store is keeping both passions alive, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the ministry and the Fakes’ own Fort Barachel Foundation. That aspect of the business is what Groves calls “the heart and soul of the store.” The building the store is housed in used to be a skate park. Although most of the skate park closed, the Fakes maintained the Fort Barachel ministry, which allows children, specifically those who are involved in sports played at a skate park, to have a safe place to skate. The group participates in Bible studies, serves and skates together. Joyce Fake’s passion for Burundi stemmed out of a mission trip at her church, First Baptist Church Windermere. For several years, a friend asked her to go on a trip to Burundi, and finally Joyce agreed to go in 2014. “I just fell in love with the country,” she said. The ministry runs an orphanage and church in the country, which is one of the poorest and hungriest countries in the world and is currently embroiled in a political crisis. Joyce continues to volunteer with Burundi Christian Ministries and keeps up relationships she made in Burundi. Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@orangeobserver.com.

is one step closer to getting its first Wawa. At the Jan. 14 meeting, the Winter Garden City Commission approved an ordinance rezoning about 6.09 acres at the northwest corner of West Colonial Drive and South Dillard Street to planned commercial development. Commissioners also approved the site plan for the Wawa. The area also includes plans for a Culver’s and a retail and coffee shop. “A lot of people have asked, ‘When is this going to happen?’” Commissioner Colin Sharman said. “‘We’ve heard about it for so long. We’re excited.’” The Wendy’s planned previously was pulled from the site plan, because commissioners did not want to see another fastfood restaurant at that location. “My comment was the last meeting I wasn’t being specific on Wendy’s,” Mayor John Rees said. “That was more of a general comment of having a fast-food type restaurant with drive-throughs there at a major intersection of our city.” Commissioner Kent Makin expressed a desire for a hotel at the site, which is still uncertain. “When we first brought this to the commission originally we said that we didn’t know for sure if there could be a hotel,” said City Manager Mike Bollhoefer. “Tanja (Gerhartz) and I are still meeting with several hotel people. We’re working very hard and diligently to bring a hotel to that site.” COST-SHARE PROGRAM

gram funds alternative water supply projects or construction for such projects, and Winter Garden’s project was selected as part of the program. The program will help fund Winter Garden’s reclaimed and stormwater aquifer recharge system project, which will create a system to capture reclaimed water and stormwater runoff, increasing aquifer recharge and water for reuse irrigation. The cost-share program splits costs with the city, with a maximum contribution of $1,581,470. Commissioners approved entering into the program. GOLF CARTS

Bollhoefer requested commissioners identify the best and safest golf cart routes throughout the city. Once commissioners determine the legal routes, the city will educate residents about golf cart routes and usage. A golf cart that can travel more than 20 mph is actually not a golf cart by law and is therefore an illegal vehicle on the road. Contact Jennifer Nesslar at jnesslar@orangeobserver.com.

Oakland welcomes planning director

AMY QUESINBERRY RHODE

of South Florida, has been hired to lead the town of Oakland in its next chapter of significant planning and development, most notably along the town’s gateway corridors. He replaces Max Spann, the former planner who recently resigned from the town to take another job. Town Manager Dennis Foltz said Marder was highly recommended by several Central Florida planners who were contacted by Foltz. “Jay Marder fits the criteria very well of what I think we need in a planning director in Oakland,” he said. “He has a professional education and a strong background in planning in Florida, including 17 years with the city of Sanford and nine years with the city of Miami Gardens. He was (Miami Gardens’) first planner, and in Sanford, he was very instrumental in the river walk. “I believe he’ll be a good fit for the town and with the development activities that we anticipate,” Foltz said. Marder has master’s degrees in urban planning, from San Jose State University, California, and public administration, from the University of Central Florida. His interest in planning was sparked by an introductory planning course he was encouraged to take when he was an undergraduate. “It was taught by a great planner who helped establish the coastal protection in California,” Marder said. “I just kept going.” In Miami Gardens, Marder initiated a livable “grand boulevard” vision that would completely replan and transform the five-mile segment of U.S. 1 and the adjacent roadway used by the local transit system. He also received an award from the Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Board in 2013 for

initiating and preserving historic resources, including local designations and architecture, and he helped obtain National Register designation for the Sunshine State Arch and various historic markers. He’s excited about the possibilities in Oakland and is looking forward to working in a great environment and moving the town forward with positive contributions. The new planner said he wants to do the following: Create a planning framework to preserve the character of the town within the context of burgeoning development pressures, continue the strategic actions and initiatives already underway, including activating the downtown Tubb Street/West Orange Trail area, regulate State Road 50 development in a way that reflects the town’s character and prevent the typical “strip commercial” development that characterizes much of the Orlando Urban Area. Marder, 66, has been married for 40 years to his wife, Randa, a certified life coach and health coach. They have one daughter, Talia, who works in the fashion industry, and a son, Josh, a rabbi in Chicago who is married with five children. He previously lived in the Orlando area for 20 years and said it is great to come back to so many friends and colleagues. “He’s very passionate about planning and was doing some very creative volunteer planning down in the South Florida area,” Foltz said. JAN. 6 16000 block of West Colonial Drive. Drug possession. An officer answered a call about a woman passed out in a car around 3:43 p.m. The officer woke her and asked about fender damage, which she said had been from the prior day but she was fine. When asked whether she was drinking, she said she was not because of rehab, which she said was for pills and included probation. She said she had taken an Oxycodone in the morning and then offered a prescription bottle, which did not match the pills inside. The driver said a friend had given her pills when she had run out. Officers confirmed she was on probation for possessing a controlled substance, so they arrested her. A search led to finding 25 pills of four varieties and a crack pipe.

OCOEE

JAN. 1 300 block of Hormigas Street. Drunken driving. An officer saw a car speed past southbound on Clarke Road while swerving, almost hitting another car. The officer activated emergency lights, but the driver drove the whole way home. The driver first refused sobriety tests but then complied, failing to follow a visual stimulus. For the walk-and-turn, the suspect repeatedly said he understood instructions but then asked again, constituting a refusal. The officer arrested the suspect on a DUI charge. The suspect refused a breath test. JAN. 6 10000 block of West Colonial Drive. Theft. At 6:40 p.m., a big-box store employee told police a woman was bathing naked in a sink. The worker then showed an officer video of the woman putting on clothes for sale without paying for them all. She said she had told the cashier to charge her for her suit, and it was not her fault the cashier did not charge it all. She removed unpaid $12.44 pants on request but then spit on them on the floor. The officer arrested her on a petit theft charge.

W.G., county discuss Windermere Road project Current plans entail Winter Garden overseeing construction of a roundabout at the intersection with Stoneybrook West Parkway and Roberson Road. ZAK KERR STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN As it stands, the

junction of Windermere Road with Stoneybrook West Parkway and Roberson Road has one lane of traffic entering and exiting the intersection in each of four directions. The Winter Garden side — Stoneybrook West Parkway — expands to two lanes in both directions a few hundred feet from the intersection, and with a large amount of unused rightof-way at the intersection on that side, Winter Garden has room to construct much-needed improvements. Just ask parents and students driving south on Windermere Road after classes end at West Orange High. Based on discussions city per-

sonnel have had with Orange County staff, those two parties might be close to an agreement that would initiate construction, which county traffic and transportation officials have been examining for turn lanes since 2012 or earlier. Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said a meeting is scheduled for Jan. 27, when more details could emerge. But as of now, the big idea seems to be county funds contributing to Winter Garden crews installing a roundabout, Orange County Public Works Deputy Director Joe Kunkel said. “For however long it’s been that the project has been discussed, the county had done preparation with a project for turn lanes,” Kunkel said. “We had this big meeting … with the residents, I

think at Windermere Elementary School. There was a lot of desire for a roundabout (at that meeting).” County and Winter Garden personnel have been exchanging iterations for this project for a long time, including one Winter Garden proposal to contribute money for the county to take over the project, Kunkel said. But most recently, Winter Garden officials have expressed interest in pursuing their roundabout project, he said. “Our discussion was that if the city and a lot of the citizens that were out there were people in the city of Winter Garden, they seemed to be desiring to have the roundabout go in,” Kunkel said. “So instead of us spending a chunk of money to have an intersection improvement … we had

some discussions with the city, and it seems they are amiable to get the funding of the county and build a roundabout.” An exact amount of money the county would contribute is not set, but it would be hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to county staff. The exact ramifications and distances of rightof-way affected by this project is another uncertainty, Kunkel said. But he estimated 600 to 700 feet past the intersection would be affected on each side. “We had always talked about 600 to 700 feet of each leg of the roundabout would go along with the project, and then the right-ofway would be turned over to city of Winter Garden,” Kunkel said. “There may be other annexes in the mix I’m unaware of, such as individual property owners. But that’s a whole separate issue.” Contact Zak Kerr at zkerr@orangeobserver.com.

REMEMBERING RAYMOND SCREWS The school was less than two years old when tragedy struck the campus. On Dec. 12, 1977, WOHS Assistant Principal Roosevelt Holloman Jr. walked into Principal Ray Screws’ office, where an exchange of words took place, and Holloman shot and killed Screws. He was found guilty of first-degree murder the following summer and given life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years. According to news reports, Screws had called a meeting with

his three top administrative aides and confronted Holloman, 41, about allegations of misconduct with a 16-year-old female student. The meeting took place about 30 minutes after school had let out for the day. An argument ensued, and Holloman, who had entered the meeting carrying a metal box, pulled a chrome-plated revolver from the box and fired at Screws, hitting him in the neck. The other two administrators, Assistant

Principal Tony Krapf and Dean of Students Emma Brown, ran from the office as Holloman fired three more times. Emergency medical personnel from West Orange Memorial Hospital in Winter Garden rushed Screws to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. 40 years young FULL CIRCLE

Lakeview and Ocoee became junior high schools, and the highschoolers had to learn to maneuver around the windowless, circular classroom buildings and the two Commons (the name for the orange-and-blue and yellowand-green cafeterias). The new 210,000-square-foot school, built for a capacity of 2,126 students, wasn’t completed for the beginning of the 1975-76 school year, so the first-year Warriors started their classes at Lakeview. (The junior high students at Lakeview and Ocoee attended double sessions at Ocoee High.) West Orange students began classes at the new campus on Beulah Road once construction was completed in January 1976 at a cost of $6.5 million. It educated students from Winter Garden, Ocoee, Oakland, Windermere and the Dr. Phillips area of Orlando. Many of the teachers transferred from Lakeview, Ocoee and Evans high schools. Since then, there have been 10 principals (and one acting principal), four decades of Homecoming kings and queens, 40 yearbooks full of memories, a number of different Warrior mascot logos, about 7,200 days of classes (and roughly 43,200 hours of class time), more than 200 home football games and a softball and two bowling state championships. Now, the high school — always

WELCOME HOME CELEBRATION

WHEN: 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8 WHERE: West Orange High School auditorium, 1625 Beulah Road, Winter Garden DETAILS: The community is invited to a 40th-anniversary ceremony. The West Orange Marching Band, led by Kenneth Boyd, is nearly 300 students strong and consistently receives superior ratings in competitions. It has performed in events such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City; the Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, D.C.; and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Chicago; as well as a USF&G Sugar Bowl pregame show. The school’s first band director was Harold Cooper, who served in that role for 23 years. That first band had nearly 150 performers. Cooper died of cancer in 1998, but not before the community rallied around him to give him 12 days of Christmas: 12 grand finales, 11 all-time favorites, 10 sirens blaring, nine ladies kicking, eight maids marching, seven wands swinging, six Auburn Tigers, five colleagues rhyming, four calling friends, three French horns, two generations caroling and a band in a pear tree.

The auditorium was also named in Cooper’s memory. The southeast concession stand at the football field is called Cooper’s Corner, as well. Like the band, West Orange’s choral and theater departments repeatedly win outstanding ratings at district- and state-level festivals. The advanced choirs, under the direction of Jeff Redding, won top honors in 2005 at a competition in Verona, Italy. The theater department, with Ken Rush as director, has received year-to-year first-place honors in the district thespian competition, and “Children of a Lesser God” was named the best play in seven states at the South Eastern Theatre Conference. The department has also been asked on several occasions to perform at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Three of Rush’s original plays have received state recognition.

Final Bow Encore Furniture will be closing its Plant Street location at the end of the month. DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN

Phrases along the lines of “rustic” and “shabby chic” come to customers’ minds when they step for the first time through the sliding, barn-style front door of Encore Furniture on Plant Street in downtown Winter Garden. Wood canvases reminiscent of decorations that would be found in an old farmhouse encourage customers to “Keep calm and carry on” and to “Behave! What happens today is on Facebook tomorAN ENCORE FOR ENCORE FURNITURE Although the shop does not yet have a new physical location, owner Deborah Pilotto has changed its name to Unique Rustique and hopes to have its website up and running within the next month. row.” Nearby, bird cages of various shapes, colors and sizes adorn the large front table, a store favorite. These are only a few of the treasures people go to Encore to find. But time is quickly running out for customers to go in and claim them. Encore will be closing its doors by the end of January, when its lease is up. The building, which has been for sale for years, has been sold and, with the exception of the front facade, will soon be torn down. Eventually, a Mexican restaurant called The Whole Enchilada, a chain with three locations in Broward County, move into its place. Store owner and interior decorator Deborah Pilotto opened Encore four years ago. Originally, she had the location across the street, where restaurant and wine bar Urban Flats is now. The business got its start after one of her model homes sold and she was left with the furniture. “I had actually decorated a model home in Oakland Park and it sold, so I had the model home furniture that I needed to sell,” she said. “It started out with used furniture, model home-used furniture, and then as time went by and all that sold I just went to allnew [items], except for maybe a few antique pieces.”

Danielle Hendrix

Cups, jars and drink holders sit atop a wooden dresser toward the front of the store.

Pilotto, who lived in Winter Garden for 16 years, previously had a store for five years on Boyd Street called Island Ease, a small gift shop. She had always wanted her own store and often went to Atlanta for the AmericasMart home shows, which are held in one of the world’s largest wholesale trade centers, to get things for her clients. “They go overseas and … bring shipping crates back over of antiques, and then you can go through the warehouse and pick antiques out and bring them back,” she said. Encore’s current location came to be after Pilotto got a good deal on the rental. The building has been for sale for a while now, and

PET OF THE WEEK

before becoming Encore, it sat empty for three years. “The building’s old, it has some issues, it doesn’t have air conditioning, the roof leaks, and we’re the only store that has an interior gutter system,” Pilotto said. However, although the Winter Garden location is closing, Pilotto doesn’t have plans to let go of Encore just yet. She has not found a new location yet, but she is changing the store’s name to Unique Rustique and hopes to have a website running within the next month. “I enjoy what I do,” she said. “I don’t think that everybody gets a chance to do what they love, and I just really love doing it, I love picking out the things, I really like merchandising the store. It’s just fun for me.”

The building’s history dates back as early as 1916. Winter Garden historic records describe it as a one-story commercial building with Masonry Vernacular-style architecture, which is characterized by “curvilinear parapets with coping, a decorative panel, brick exterior wall fabric, vehicle bay and a storefront.” According to Sanborn Company maps published of Winter Garden between 1917 and 1950, the building once served as an automobile repair shop and garage through the 1930s. The maps also indicate “it was apparently built as the Garden City Garage, initially managed by A.P. Swaidmark and by the 1920s Clarence Law.” An undated image indicates that the building was also once used as an electrical-device shop under S.E. Dollen Inc.

WINDERMERE GARDEN CLUB Windermere Garden Club sponsored Arbor Day for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds from Windermere Union Church. Mayor Gary Bruhn read a proclamation, and the Windermere Police presented the colors. The children performed four songs and then threw mulch and put the finishing touches on a newly planted tree. An arborist gave the children a tree education and a tree-climbing demonstration. Refreshments were served on the Town Hall porch.

SPORTS FOOTGOLF HISTORY

Ocoee High School wrestler Derek Verhoest earns district sportsmanship award. Page 18A

Daunting task awaits Warriors

After topping Apopka Jan. 14 in the district semifinals, 3-1, West Orange fell to Dr. Phillips in the final Jan. 15, 1-0.

West Orange girls soccer finished as district runner-up last week, meaning the Warriors will travel to face nationally ranked Oviedo Jan. 21. Winter Garden resident Steve Crane returned recently from the FootGolf World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he made a little bit of history. Competing for Team USA, Crane recorded the first hole-in-one in the history of the FootGolf World Cup Jan. 5. The ace was part of a championship effort for Team USA.

STEVEN RYZEWSKI SENIOR SPORTS EDITOR WINTER GARDEN Taking

a look ahead to the first round of the regional tournament, following his team’s 1-0 loss to Dr. Phillips in the district championship Jan. 15, West Orange coach Stan Banks offered a bit

of humor when asked how he would prepare his team to take on nationally ranked Oviedo in the regional quarterfinals Jan. 21. “You don’t let them see any film of Oviedo,” Banks joked. SEE CHEER ON PAGE 18A

DUST OFF THE RUST For a second year, the Winter Garden Squeeze and Winter Garden Little League will partner to host a “Dust off the Rust” Preseason Clinic. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at Winter Garden Little League, 119 S. Park Ave. Participants must be registered for the 2016 spring season at Winter Garden Little League. Registration for the event is open and also will occur starting at 8:15 a.m. the day of. More information can be found at eteamz. com/wglittleleague or by contacting abates@floridaleague.com.

EAGLES MARK ANOTHER FIRST The Legacy Charter soccer team added another first to a growing list this season, winning its first district playoff game Jan. 18. In the opening round of the Class 2A District 4 Tournament, the Eagles defeated Faith Christian in overtime, 2-1. The winning header was scored by Caleb Enright.

MCDOOM DECOMMITS West Orange senior Eddie McDoom has decommitted from the University of Oregon. The highly recruited receiver confirmed the decision on his Twitter account Jan. 17 and is expected to visit the University of Michigan soon. Reports suggest McDoom’s desire to visit Michigan led to Oregon’s pulling his scholarship offer. The Wolverines, who have offered McDoom a scholarship, practiced at West Orange High for a week leading up to the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl and are thought to be a leading contender for his commitment leading up to National Signing Day Feb. 3.

Hear them ROAR For the first time in its history, Foundation Academy fielded a competitive cheerleading team this year. After starting from scratch, the Lions competed at regionals Jan. 16 and qualified for the state meet in Tampa.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

SPONSORED BY MARK’S FLOORS

Derek Verhoest Derek Verhoest, 16, has been wrestling since his freshman year at Ocoee High and recently was presented a sportsmanship award by an opposing coach from Lake Nona High. The award, part of a sportsmanship initiative by Orange County Public Schools, is intended for coaches to recognize students who exemplify leadership, respect and proper mindset for rivalry.

Did winning the sportsmanship award come as a surprise to you? It kind of came as a surprise because I was just doing whatever I do after matches. That’s what our coach told us to do — just be good sports to everybody else. I try to help people up after matches, so I just didn’t think anything about it. When did you start wrestling and how did you get into it? I started my freshman year, and I actually started because of one of my friends, who actually doesn’t wrestle with us anymore because he went into the Marines my freshman year. I used to wrestle around with him, and he was like, “Dude, you should wrestle — you have a lot of heart for it.” I ended up sticking with it — it’s the one sport I actually stuck to.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why? I guess it would be super speed or super strength because they seem like cool powers to have. They would be really beneficial. You wouldn’t have to have a car jack if you were super strong and don’t need a car if you have super speed. What’s your favorite part of competing and why? The one-on-one (match) and being able to go and give it your all. I’m really competitive about everything. My best friend and I both do culinary and wrestling, and we’re competing about everything all the time. How did you get involved with the culinary program at school? I started last year, and I did it because I got switched out of a class and they told me I could pick culinary, so I took the last spot in that (class) and just stuck with it. I liked it, and then I started going to Westside Tech and doing it. Do you have a favorite quote? “If you’re not first, you’re last.” I like that quote, I have it on a hoodie! My parents printed it for me. What’s a song you’ve been listening to lately that you really like? Probably “TNT” by AC/ DC, because it’s something I grew up listening to and it gets me pumped up.

— DANIELLE HENDRIX

Indeed, the Warriors (8-6-1) will face a tall task when they travel to east Seminole County to take on the Lions (16-2) — the 12th-ranked team in the nation by MaxPreps. Oviedo was also the runner-up in Class 5A in 2015. The regional quarterfinal match at Oviedo High is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday. It is a fate West Orange could have avoided, had the Warriors been able to defeat rival Dr. Phillips Jan. 15 in the Class

5A District 4 Championship. Although the game remained scoreless through the first 69 minutes, the Panthers broke through with 11 minutes to play and eventually took the 1-0 victory for the program’s first district title. The loss came 24 hours after the Warriors scored an important 3-1 victory over Apopka in the district semifinals. “Even in the loss tonight, we dominated possession and dominated shots on goal,” Banks said after the district final.

Other area programs did not advance out of their respective district tournaments. The Ocoee Knights fell to Apopka, 3-0, in the opening round of the district tournament Jan. 12. The Knights finished the 2015-16 campaign with a 3-10-1 record. Foundation Academy completed an impressive season with a 10-3-1 record and secured its first district tournament win. Cheerleaders ready for states CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17A

The girls join pinkies while in prayer and inscribe Bible verses on the bottoms of their sneakers. Perhaps there is some anxiety or some nerves ahead of the next day’s competition, but before the team is dismissed, Pilz reminds the girls of the significance of what they have already accomplished: This is the first time that the small private school in Winter Garden has ever fielded a competitive cheerleading team. What that means is that, after years of only being able to participate as sideline cheerleaders and not being able to compete against other squads, the dream of girls such as senior Reilly Lord has finally come to fruition. “I was kind of always the over-passionate sideline cheerleader — the one that wanted the really intense practices and all the stuff that competitive cheerleaders do,” said Lord, who has been involved in the program since third grade. Now, Lord is co-captain of the first-year squad, along with junior Maddi DeStefano. The insistence of Lord, who also plays basketball and track for Foundation, was among the most important factors in the program getting off the ground this year. “Reilly was instrumental in getting girls to be passionate

about it,” Pilz said. “She’s one of those that, you hope to coach a girl like her in your lifetime. I’m very lucky to have her on the squad this year.” Lord’s leadership and experience from training at the Top Gun Cheerleading Training Center also have been important on a team full of freshmen (three) and middle-schoolers (eight). Several of the girls, including DeStefano, had not cheered competitively before and were an equal mix of excited and anxious about the challenge. “I was a little bit apprehensive,” DeStefano said. “I knew the stunts were obviously a lot harder (than sideline cheering), and even though the routines are only two minutes and 30 seconds — it’s the hardest two minutes and 30 seconds ever. It’s basically doing a sprint while yelling for part of it.” Pilz came to the program in December with the hope of adding competitive cheerleading to the equation. Along the way, in convincing the school’s administration that the requisite participation and dedication were there, the former collegiate cheerleader was aided greatly by many parents from the team. “The parents were the ones that went to administration and were asking, begging administration, ‘Please let this happen, the girls want it,’” Pilz said. “There’s no way I would have

been able to do this on my own.” Among those parents was Phillip Pacheco, whose daughter, Caitlyn, is a seventh-grader on the team. “A lot goes into it — the work, the time, the dedication,” said Pacheco, who serves as the team’s photographer. “It’s been absolutely amazing seeing her growth with the school and the team and how far they’ve come.” Dating back to May, Pilz laid out a goal-oriented agenda for her program. The final goal for this first season was an ambitious one — making it to state. A day after Pilz reminded her girls that they already have been successful no matter what transpired at regionals, the Lions made history by scoring high enough to qualify for the state meet Jan. 29 to 30 at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa. Competition at the state meet will be stiff, as the Foundation squad — with its eight middle-schoolers — will compete against some squads comprised entirely of upperclassmen and have years of experience. Given all the Lions have accomplished already, though, there’s no reason for Pilz and her squad can’t be just a little optimistic. “We’re definitely David versus Goliath,” Pilz said. “But we’re excited, and we have the passion and the drive.” Contact Steven Ryzewski at sryzewski@orangeobserver.com.

The Knights had four girls place in the top three in their respective weight classes, and the rival West Orange Warriors had two competitors place. “I think we did well,” Ocoee head coach Brittney Walker said. “I have a couple really strong girls that I think will do really well in regionals — maybe have some state qualifiers.” Among those is Victoria Jefferson, who competes in the 199-pound weight class. She posted a meet-best combined 425 pounds for her bench press and clean-and-jerk — a mark that included a meet-best bench press of 240 pounds. “(Jefferson) just loves to lift,” Walker said. “Her dad, if you saw him, he’s really into lifting, and she kind of gets that from him.” Ocoee’s Stephanie Denmark, who took third in the 169-pound weight class, is looking to qualify for state for a third year. A place for everything … Want to get 2016 started with an orderly home? Winter Garden-based professional organizer Savanna Westwood offers these simple tips and tricks to keep your home organized.

2.

TAKE 5 If it takes five minutes or less, do it now. It won’t take more than a minute or two to make a call or shoot a text, or pick up a piece of clothing off the ground and put it into a laundry basket.

1.

S

ome people’s New Year’s resolutions include getting organized and decluttering. But whether you’ve already abandoned that resolution or just need some help getting started, it doesn’t have to be an intimidating task. There isn’t a one-size-fitsall method to getting and staying organized. Professional organizer and Winter Garden local Savanna Westwood said everyone is different and struggles with different things; therefore, everyone organizes differently. Still, she recommends starting off by asking yourself a series of questions to determine your

SEE STORY PAGE 5B

1.

MAKE YOUR BED EVERY MORNING. It’s the first thing you can get accomplished in the morning and feel good about. “It’s the best gift you can wrap up in the morning and open up in the evening,” Westwood said.

2.

IF YOU WANT TO START DECLUTTERING YOUR CLOSET, REVERSE YOUR HANGERS. Have the open end of the hanger face you and set a timeline (a season, month or year). Whatever hanger is back to normal by the end of your timeline, those are the items you know you’ve been wear-

ing. Anything that stays the same is a piece of clothing that you’ve not been wearing, so it needs to be gone.

3.

NEVER LEAVE A ROOM OR A CAR EMPTYHANDED. There’s always something in the room that doesn’t belong there. This could be a snack, drink, book, child’s toy or something else. Chances are, it’s been there for a while. It helps reduce clutter and designate a “home” for the item.

4.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF. It takes 21 days to get into a good habit. Start with small changes. It will take time to be organized.

Lakefront Winter Garden....Over 4,000 heated sq feet of Custom Quality Construction. 5 Bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths with 2 Master Suites located downstairs. Pool, dock, sandy beach and fire pit on John’s Lake. Call for a private tour. Owner financing available.

COMMERCIAL building on .25 acre. Superior Location! Full Kitchen, Bath, handicap accessible, large main room, and 3 separate offices/rooms. For Sale or Rent!

5.

USE VERTICAL SPACE AND SHELVES. “We have a limited amount of horizontal space, but we have a lot of vertical space,” Westwood said. “I’m a big fan of using over-the-door shoe racks with pockets in them, because they can be used for anything.”

6.

DONATE OR TOSS IT. Most Americans only wear about 20 to 30% of what they own. If it doesn’t fit or has holes in it, donate or toss it. When you buy something new, something old has to come out. Take the old item off the hanger and put the new one in its place.

Lakefront Romanesque features in this over 4300 sq ft 5 bedroom 4 1/2 bath pool home located in the heart of Clermont on Lake Minnehaha. Call for a private tour. Owner financing available.

usty mailbox. Broken tile in the entryway. Dead grass. Dirty roof. In the midst of everyday life, these are all things that homeowners sometimes ignore. But when selling a home, keeping the home just as it was lived in can cost time and money. When your house is for sale, staging it can pay off, according to Megan Morris, owner of MHM Professional Staging. Staging prepares a home for potential homebuyers. According to Morris, 95% of Association of Staging Professionals staged homes sell in 11 days on the market as compared to 90. This means professionally staged homes sell 88% faster than homes that aren’t staged. These homes sell for 17% more money on average than homes that aren’t professionally staged. “It’s not that expensive when you look at the whole scheme of things,” Morris said. “If you’re going to save money by not having your house on the market as

long and you’re going to get a higher amount of money, it pays for itself.” Much of selling a home is about first impressions, which starts with the exterior. If a potential homebuyer drives up to your house to notice you have not kept up the exterior of your home, it can change their opinion of the home. “A lot of people come into the house through the garage every day, and they don’t even look at the front porch,” Morris said. “When you’re selling a house and someone walks up on the front porch and sees a broken tile or something up front, that’s a first impression. They might think the house isn’t well taken care of.” In the digital age, people also view your home through photos online, so your online first impression counts. Often, Realtors and home sellers may use smart phones to take these photos, which Morris said is less effective. Homeowners should invest in high-quality photography, and their homes should be staged for the photos. “You are just a click away from being deleted,” Morris said.

AFTER

When selling a home, it’s important that potential buyers can envision themselves in the space. When your family photos are on the walls, it still looks like your house. “It’s better to go ahead and pack those all up and know that it’s going to your next house, and have the house look more neutral,” Morris said. “Then the people are going to notice the architecture; they’re going to notice more of the elements of the house.” Professional staging offers several options to the homeowner. Owners can get a professional evaluation of the home and then make the changes, or they can have the stager make the changes, as well. Julie Bettosini, co-founder of

Stockworth Realty Group, recommends home sellers in all price ranges stage their homes. “I think the return on the investment far exceeds the investment,” she said. “It’s not a cost. It comes back to you tenfold in the purchase price, as well as in the time on market,” she said.

Scott Taylor 407.925.2526

CURB APPEAL If you’re tight on a budget, Morris said to invest the money you do have in your lawn rather than on the inside of the home. The outside of your home is the first impression potential home buyers get when they arrive at your house. Pay attention to your mailbox — how does it look? Does your roof need pressure washing? Are there cobwebs or broken tiles on the entrance of your home?

BATHROOMS A dirty bathroom discourages potential home buyers. Hair on the floor and cluttered counters are things in particular to avoid. Hide your toothbrush and put away the personal things. Hire a profes-

THROUGH THE FRONT DOOR What you see when you open the front door of your home matters. If the foyer and the main area are less than desirable, many potential home buyers won’t continue on to the rest of the house. If you can see several rooms with different colors right from the entryway, paint them a neutral color to make the space inviting. Pick the neutral color by following the scheme of your flooring. If you have a travertine floor, pick a light beige. If you have a gray slate, select a light gray color. Many homes could benefit from an off-white color. Ultimately, you should pick a color that is clean and uniform.

MASTER BEDROOM AND OTHER BEDROOMS These are big features of the home. Be sure to put away glasses and other medicines that may be sitting out. The only thing on your nightstand should be a lamp and other accessories that aren’t personal. The bed should be made neatly with pillows organized.

KITCHEN “The kitchen is the heart of the home,” Morris said. If your kitchen is not updated, make sure the room looks as clean as possible. The room also could benefit from changing out the counters or replacing the cabinet hardware.

BUSINESS BRIEFS Pulte to open Ocoee project Pulte Homes plans to open Crown Pointe Cove, a new single-family home community in Ocoee, this spring. Lyndsey Patterson, director of marketing for Pulte Homes in North Florida, said Crown Pointe Cove is an intimate enclave of just 44 home sites for new, three- to six-bedroom singlefamily homes, priced from the mid-$200,000s. New one- and two-story Pulte homes at Crown Pointe Cove will range from 2,162 to 3,172 square feet, with flex rooms and owner’s retreats among the special features of these floor plans. Patterson said the gated community — located off West and Ocoee Apopka roads — is less than one mile from State Road 429 and near outdoor recreation areas, Ocoee High School and Winter Garden Village. For more information, visit pulte.com/CrownPointe or call 877-768-8819.

and strong job growth. Although much of Florida is dependent on retirees and snowbirds, Orlando is the youngest non-college town in the state, according to Forbes. The presence of large tourism and entertainment companies such as Universal and Disney in the city attracts millions of visitors each year and strong economic growth.

Oakland Park adds builder

Singh opens satellite offices

Custom homebuilder RCB Homes has been added to Oakland Park’s roster of builders. The Winter Garden-based company will start construction on its model home in the next few weeks, and it is expected to be complete by summer 2016. The model, priced at more than $650,000, is planned to be a two-story, 3,400-square-foot craftsman-style home with four bedrooms, three-and-one-half baths and a three-car garage. Oakland Park is seeing a demand for custom homes in the community. Of the 150 homes built there so far, 20% have been custom-built. “Our team selected RCB Homes as a custom builder in Oakland Park because of its local presence, focus on quality, and experience in the Orlando area,” said Thom Cunningham, vice president with Crescent Communities, the developer of Oakland Park. “We like the way they design and build interior spaces that are extremely livable.” RCB will be Oakland Park’s third custom builder, joining J&J Building and Vintage Estate Homes.

Orange County Property Appraiser Rick Singh has opened satellite offices to help homeowners file their Homestead Exemption paperwork. In West Orange, offices are available at the following times and locations: 1 to 7 p.m. Jan. 26 and 27, at Windermere Library, 530 Main St., Windermere; 1 to 7 p.m. Feb. 1 and 2, at Winter Garden City Hall, 300 W. Plant St., Winter Garden; and 1 to 7 p.m. Feb. 15 and 16, at Southwest Library, 7255 Della Drive, Orlando.

Orlando tops list of attractive cities

Association names president

According to The Money Source, Orlando tops the list of the 10 most attractive U.S. cities for first-time homebuyers in 2016. The list is based on the company’s review of more than 70,000 loan applications, as well as city-specific data such as median home prices, unemployment rates and quality of life. According to the study, Orlando boasts a low unemployment rate (4.5%), an affordable median home price ($155,500)

Windermere resident John Lazenby, of Colony Realty Group Inc., will be named president of the Orlando Regional Realtor Association during an installation ceremony Feb. 8 at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World Resort. organizational goals. “What do they struggle with; what would they like to see done; what are they currently doing; what do they hope to achieve?” Westwood said. “For a lot of people it’s to have (more) time, to not be as stressed, to be able to find things more easily and just to make things a lot smoother in life so they’re not spending a lot of their time, which is basically what everyone wants — more time and less clutter.” Once you figure out what you hope to achieve, come up with a method that works for you — whether that is tackling the project yourself or calling a professional organizer. Professional organizers may offer a range of services, from basic home and office organizing to moving assistance. But, they are not there to take over. “I always tell my clients that professional organizers are like personal trainers,” she said. “A personal trainer is going to be there to help you. I would love it if my personal trainer would burn my calories for me, but that’s not how it’s going to work. You have to put in the effort and the time. I’m just there as a resource to help you do it.” The amount of time it takes to fully organize a room depends on its size and how much clutter is in there. However, expect to spend anywhere from four to 12 hours to finish the process.

In addition to organizing a room, keeping your life organized can be a feat, too. Making lists and schedules is a good place to start, but long lists can be overwhelming. “You have to be sure you’re not overwhelming yourself with things that you have to do and not make yourself feel like a failure when you don’t get everything done,” Westwood said. “Make little goals and start by checking off one thing each day. It’s all about building up.” Chalkboards and dry-erase boards are useful tools for making lists and writing your schedule for the day. But for further ease of organizing your schedule and having it easily accessible, Westwood suggests using Google calendar. “I’m a big advocate of Google Calendar,” she said. “You can invite people, color coordinate, set alarms, send messages and take it with you on your phone.”
