Scottish Water - better H20

less C02

Scottish Water unveiled a major environmental initiative this week to combat climate change during climate week. Climate Week, Britain’s biggest climate change campaign is hoping to inspire a new generation of environmentalists who will together help create a more sustainable future, by showcasing practical everyday solutions from across the societal spectrum. With Scottish Water aiming to travel across Scotland and give schools the chance to see the process involved in giving every individual in Scotland spectacularly clean drinking water 24 hours a day. During Climate Week, Scottish Water is aiming to highlight how the company helps to protect and enhance the natural environment of Scotland

as well as helping to deliver low carbon services for its customers. Climate Change is a very real danger facing everybody, with mankind ever dependant on the power of fossil fuels and our economy highly dependant on fossil fuels. It means that there will be no decline in the use of fossil fuels and therefore global temperatures will steadily increase. Leading to more extreme weather, which directly effects the economy, and therefore a vicious circle of destruction is created. Scottish Water in the last seven years has decreased its carbon emissions, through reducing leakage through pipes, increased renewable energy generation, energy efficiency and the ability to now recycle sludge, which is the leftover solid material from waste

water treatment. To underline the urgency of becoming a low carbon emitting country in the last century, sea levels have risen nearly seven inches after staying at the same level for 2,000 years, mainly because of the burning fossil fuels and heating up the worlds atmosphere, which leads to a melting of the polar icecaps. With the wild weather set to continue(and get steadily worse) throughout the next few years, Scottish Water is aiming to ensure that all its services are resilient to any potential impact of climate change. Mark Williams, Scottish Water’s Head of Environmental Science and Regulation, said:

West of Scotland Media Publishers of local newspapers and specialist publications.

“Climate Week 2014 is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate what we are doing to build a sustainable Scottish Water. “That means being able to deliver on our customers’ expectations of high-quality water and waste services whenever and wherever they are required well into the future, while supporting Scotland’s economy and environment. “We’ve been working hard to ensure the quality of water in our reservoirs is of the highest quality, working with landowners to cut diffuse pollution, and our investment in waste water treatment works has seen their

compliance with standards increase.

environmental

“Our investment is helping to deliver the highest ever quality of drinking water at customer taps, while helping to support vital jobs across different sectors in the Scottish economy. “Projects like our £250 million investment in improvements to the river water quality and natural environment of the River Clyde is just one of the ways in which we’re looking to do even more, while helping communities and customers by playing our part in tackling flooding and dealing with the impact of heavy rainfall.
