LETTER FROM

THE EDITOR

One of the most intense debates I have ever found myself in was about the definition of art. Is it expression? Can it be passed down? Can it only be taught? Is it subjective? Is it simply expression? As an admirer of art, magazine editor, and observer of life, I can honestly say that the most poetic definition I have ever heard is that art is simply the soul expressing itself. It can be manifested through acrylic paint caressing a canvas, chiseled sculptures, music or complex

appetizers and entrees that exists for a few seconds. Summarily, we agreed to believe that art is everything that exists. Because it all possess a unique beauty. It all makes a statement. It all has soul. YOU ARE ART AND YOU ARE WORTHY. We hope that this issue inspires you to keep creating and more importantly to keep dreaming. Your existence is intentional and inspirational to people who you don’t even realize are watching.

Even at our lowest points, we are surrounded by purpose, the presence of soul and art. BE INSPIRED.

The King’s Burden A Modern Day Parable

ART BY MARCUS WILLIAMS AKA M.WILL

BY: ANDRE SAMUELS

A

s the skies filled with darkness, and the mud brick towers began to crumble, screams of terror could be heard throughout the great city. Families huddled in terror as they watched the very walls of their homes melt away before their eyes. As the ground shook and the torrential rains fell, the famed general galloped on his horse, right up to the palace. He dismounted, filled with energy. As the world collapsed around him, he was overcome with enthusiasm. This was the moment he’d been waiting for. He ran, right into the palace chamber without a single person stopping him. The palace was eerily empty. Everyone, including the guards, had fled the palace. As the General entered the great throne room, he approached the king’s platform. He climbed the seemingly endless staircase, all the way to the top of the stairs, only to see that the king seemed lifeless in his great throne chair. “My King”, he shouted at the lifeless body. Joy and exuberance welled up inside his heart. He tried to maintain a tone of concern, to hide his ever growing sense of excitement. He walked around the throne and crouched over the monarchs body, filled with the sense that his moment had finally arrived. He pushed the stiff corpse right out of the chair. He was filled with quiet jubilation as he heard the thud of the body slam to the ground. He kneeled at the king’s side, slowly lifting the king’s famous painted mask off of his face. The king was never seen without his painted mask. The general momentarily pondered the fact that despite their close relationship, the general had never seen the king’s face. When he lifted the mask, He noted that the king had such an incredible look of peace on his face. An odd smile, or smirk was frozen on his face. The general thought to himself, the king had been a good ruler. Perhaps he died with a smile, satisfied with his accomplishments; the general surmised. The king, in fact never left his throne. He ate, in his throne chair and slept in his throne chair. He never seemed to tire of emissaries, and courtiers seeking his guidance and instruction. His work ethic was so legendary that some even said that the king, was bathed in his throne chair. The king had always told the general how hard his job was. These were the thoughts flying through his mind, now that the

possibility of taking the throne was becoming a reality. He remembered that the king told him that being an African King was harder than any other throne in the world. There were so many tribes, and so many smaller kingdoms. The king had to balance the interests of all of them. To be an Emperor, was no life of privilege. The General remembered that the the old king told him that ruling was the greatest of all burdens. The king, had always told the general that it takes all of his strength to hold the Kingdom and The Great City together. When the guards brought visitors in to see the king, they would proclaim the king to be “the very foundation of the land; the glue which holds our buildings together; the strength in our kingdom’s great barrier walls.” They would declare that “he has more strength in his pinky, then all other men have in their entire bodies.” After several more laudatory phrases, they would add “When he passes from this earth, every mud brick tower, every mud built home in our kingdom will be washed away because the tears of the earth will fall, when our great king passes.” As the general looked out of the palace windows, the mud brick skyscrapers were indeed melting away as the rains pelted them, just as the famous sayings predicted. The earth was indeed trembling as the courtiers always said it would, when the king died. Despite all of the tumult, the general could not wait to assume power. It was well deserved, he noted. He was the kingdom’s greatest warrior. He had fought in countless battles defending the throne. It should pass to him, he thought. The king had no children of his own. It was said that he poured so much of himself into sustaining the kingdom that he never had the energy or time to have children. But the general had been like a son to him. The king even adopted him as a child, from among all of the slave children, captured outside of the kingdom to serve at the king’s pleasure. He was hand picked by the king to lead the army. The general reassured himself, It was only natural that he should rule. The general didn’t even expect much opposition. Even though he wasn’t born in the kingdom, few would be able to rationalize opposing his rein as the former king was himself also an immigrant to the land. And if any did oppose him, he would crush them swiftly.

17 WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM

As he very unceremoniously plopped himself into the throne, the general saw the that the king’s fingers had been strapped into leather rings that were attached to a long series of strings that ran behind the throne. The finger straps were an important part of the kings regalia. They symbolized the king holding the kingdom together, through the might of the power in his hands. When the guards and advisors returned, the general knew he needed to be seated on the throne, acting the part of king. He needed to be seen as king from the outset. There could be no doubt in his legitimacy. He hurried as he began to strap himself into the king’s throne. He placed his fingers into the leather rings, of the kings finger straps. He marveled at the long series of strings and visually followed them, noting for the first time that they were tied to some greater contraption behind the throne chair. The general had never been this close to the throne before and had never been in a position to see it before. The strings looked like some sort of device. It reminded him of the kind of torture wracks they used on enemies of the state. With time rapidly passing, the General had no more time for wandering thoughts. The kingdom’s dignitaries would soon return and he needed to have seized the throne by the time they arrived. When he placed his fingers into the straps, the general’s hands snapped backwards. The immense weight was nearly unbearable. The General tried to take his hand out but the tension in the strings would not let him remove his hand. He had no choice but to move forward. If he wasn’t seated on the throne, another competitor could take his place in usurping the crown. He would be king or he would be killed. The incredibly muscular general, struggled until he finally fixed his hand aright. The pain was immense. He wanted to stop but survival was now at stake and despite the pain the throne still appealed to his ego. He had come so far. Quitting was not an option. As the general fixed his hand, he noticed that some of the screaming in the city began to abate. One of the towers, which he could see through the window in the throne room stopped crumbling, right before his eyes. And the rain even seemed to be slowing down. There really was power in the throne. Soon, the general could hear the guards and the advisors approaching. He knew he had to endure the pain and strap himself, fully into the other finger straps. Despite the tortuous pain, he strapped his other hand into the

chair. The pain was now the only thing that filled his mind. It caused every inch of his body to throb. The general broke out into a great sweat as it seemed like all of the force in the world was now concentrated in his fingers and hands. He had been in countless battles. He had been sliced with swords and had limbs broken on the battlefield. Once, he was even captured by an enemy, and tortured. But this was worse. He could no longer even hide the pain on his face. His grimace, turned into a look of utter excruciation. As he threw his head back, writhing in pain, he inadvertently looked up, again out the window in the throne room. He could see that the rains had stopped entirely. The sun was now out. The landscape was returning to the dry conditions that made the kingdoms famous mud architecture possible. And the screams were no more. The buildings had stopped crumbling and the earth had stopped shaking, completely. Just then, the guards and the royal advisors burst into the throne room. They approached the throne and all but one immediately bowed before the new king. The chief advisor’s eyes were wide with a look of surprise and satisfaction. He hurriedly climbed up the staircase of the platform to the throne. He looked at the old King’s body and then he looked at the general. With an oddly upbeat demeanor, he starred momentarily at the General. He saw the look of pain on his face. “You did not know, the King’s burden. Did you?” He asked. The general was in such pain that he could not even answer. It was all he could do to keep himself from shrieking in pain. He could not move. The straps were holding him so tightly in place. He seemed more a prisoner than a king. The chief advisor noted “You look so surprised?” He explained. “Well we are not surprised. As expected, you are an orphan and immigrant in our land-as all of the previous kings have been. but did you never listen to the proclamations we make of our king? We have always said, The king truly holds our kingdom together”. He paused and circled the throne, and began tracing the now taught string with his hands. The strings behind the throne chair, run deep into the earth. Every tower, every wall is connected to the king’s throne. Without the king, they crumble. Without the king, the ground shakes and the earth’s tears come and they wash away our mud brick buildings. Our king holds our kingdom together with only the strength in his fingers”.

Then he said abruptly and without hesitation, “you can never move from your throne. You wanted to be king, and now you are. We will drape you in the finest clothes in the land. We will feed you whatever you like. And twice a day, the royal bathers will wash you. Perfumes will mask your musk”. The general now understood why the platform was so high. It was to hide the smell, from the constant stream of sweat he was now emitting. The Chief Advisor circled the throne. He picked up the painted mask. “We will dispose of the old King. Outsiders will never know that you were the general, because they will never see your face. Finally able to force out a word, he replied “That’s what the mask is for”. The Chief, lifted the mask and simultaneously answered, NO! The mask is to hide the look of pain on your face. As I’ve said, all of our nation’s kings are foreigners. Those born in the kingdom know the thrones secret. None of them would ever want to rule or usurp the throne. If visitors to our kingdom see this look on your face, they may tell others. And no one, not even another immigrant will want to be king when you pass. This is why the king must never be seen without his painted mask.” He placed the mask on the general’s face and began to walk away. “As your advisor, I will bring you whatever news you require. We will follow your orders, without hesitation. We will do whatever you ask, for you are king but there is one thing we can never do. We can never remove you from your throne”. He bowed to the king, and seemed to glide down the platform. The other advisors rose when he made it onto the floor. They all left simultaneously, closing the grand doors to the throne room behind them. The king was now all alone. He considered screaming for help but he remembered the advisors words, they would never remove him from the throne. He could not free himself. There was nothing left to do, but suffer with dignity. The general now understood why the king had no children. It really would take all of his strength to hold the kingdom together.

“You did not knowthe King’s burden.. Did you?” He asked.

“I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I AM REAL.” - AURORA DOMINGUEZ

31 WORTHY-MAGAZINE.COM

AURORA DOMINGUEZ With only the marquee lights of the Classic Gateway Theatre illuminating the 4 a.m. sky, Aurora’s eyes are ablaze with an alertness that is infectious as much as it is charming. She greets me with a sincere hug that I have learned to associate with her signature greetings and immediately offers to help me with my things. “I know how it is, Girl.” As the senior web editor for Bauer Xcel Media, Aurora is no stranger to the crazy hours magazine editors have to operate in. Once the entire wardrobe is set up for the all four of the media features, Aurora flashes a smile and lets me know that she is wiling to try on anything that I give her. She is ready for her close-up. Aurora is hands down our favorite pop culture editor to follow on a national level. Her accomplishments extend beyond clever articles on the pages and Web site of J-14 and many other young pop culture magazines. The journalistic titan has also assumed the responsibility of shaping the minds of future communicators at Florida International University as an adjunct professor. “I have taught journalism at FIU and now teach at Miami-Dade College. My kids inspire me every day. They’re the future and I am happy to help them reach their goals,” Aurora said. What has been your greatest professional and personal achievement and why? When I packed up three suitcases, scared but excited, to move to South Florida. My heart will always be in Puerto Rico, but South Florida has been home to me and I have achieved a lot of my dreams here. Also, marrying my husband Sebastian. He’s my biggest cheerleader and supporter and a great person to bounce ideas with when I am feeling like writer’s block is winning.

“I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I BELIEVE IN MYSELF.” - ESTEFANIA PINZON+ PR ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER

ESTEFANIA PINZON There is an undeniable sincerity that Estefania Pinzon possesses when it comes to her work for Adrienne Arsht Center. According to Estefania, it all came together during her work as an unpaid intern at PR firm in Fort Lauderdale. “That was when everything clicked,” Estefania said. “I became addicted to the adrenaline rush of receiving a reply to a pitch and coordinating an interview for a client. In fact, the whole process captivated me and it showed - the PR firm hired me full-time just after a few weeks. Joy still kicks in every time I see a final story run in the local newspaper, magazine or television.” What do you enjoy the most about your job? “My favorite thing about working at the Adrienne Arsht Center is that I’m constantly surrounded by creativity. From the team I work with to the phenomenal artists that perform on our stages.”

Black widow gown ($190) Boutique: Tatyana Boutique Jewelry: Earrings: Crystals By Rosetta Marrett ($50) Designer name: Faith Rosetta Marrett Accessories: Black gloves By Rosetta Marrett ($50)

Favorite thing about shooting at the Gateway Theatre? “This was the first time I had gone to the Gateway Theatre. The outfits we wore and the vintage décor in the lobby made me feel like we went back in time. My favorite part was reading the movie reviews that people posted on the wall – we have some great (and harsh) movie critics in South Florida.”

FELISHA MONET To know someone’s personality and hear their voice every day creates an unspeakable intimacy that is signature to any radio personality who knows what they are doing. With that said, Felisha Monet of 99 Jamz has been my friend in my mind for years. Her afternoon show, The Afternoon Hustle, which is on from from 2-6 p.m., is the magic that gets you through to the end of the day. One minute into a conversation with Felisha and you realize you are speaking to a professional whose signature personality has been cultivated by her respect of radio broadcast legends. Felisha has studied at the school of Angie Martinez and Howard Stern to name a few. “Growing up I listened to Angie Martinez. I kept my radio on Hot 97,” Felisha shared with the magazine. Despite her extensive track record, Felisha still has a lot that she wants to accomplish. With over 14 years invested into her career, we are still reading Felisha’s first chapter. “In the future, I would like to see myself become a self-sufficient brand. I would like to do a little television and possibly have my own talk show,” Felisha said. While she hosts a show in what some might refer to as a celebrity-filled mecca, Felisha had a very unique response when I asked who her most memorable interview was. “Louis Farrakhan. I think because we have lost so many of our leaders fighting for equality. It was an honor to speak to someone who is still here and it was just different from Hip Hop and R&B artists. As if that response wasn’t enough to have us eating out of her hands, her sentiments on community service and giving back knocked us off our feet. “My purpose is to serve. I got into radio as a way of connecting with the community I live in and connecting people with each other.” Felisha also works directly with the Susan B Anthony Recovery Center of Broward County assisting women battling AIDS/HIV, substance abuse, homelessness and domestic violence.

THE ARTIST MONET

Words have been crafted to describe women like Ashlie Monet of The Artist Monet. The fist word that comes to mind for us has to be humble. In a profession filled with diva make-up artists, The Artist Monet possesses a humility that is alarmingly refreshing for someone who has the resume that she has and like her disposition her intentions are just as pure. That is the reason we are honored to have her as our beauty editor and even more honored to have as one of our cover features. “My favorite part of my job is bringing out the beauty and perfection of a person’s day. Whether it is through listening to their problems or complimenting them and being their cheerleader for that session. It is just a blessing to be able to make someone’s day better. The

makeup is second.” What is the best professional advice that you have been given? “The best advice that I have received in this industry is to be yourself. Allowing yourself to be unique is a powerful thing. People begin to accept you because it’s genuine and special. The most amazing advice as well was to have humility respect yourself. Say yes to what makes you happy. Do what you love, if it doesn’t feel good to your soul don’t do it.” What would be your call to action to our readers about pursuing their dreams? “Never give up on your dreams and your focus. Stay strong. As an artist you have to constantly take a risk and believe in yourself. Never think you know everything. Constantly take classes. Know your worth. Be positive and focused on the journey.”

M. WILL

M. WILL OF THE PEOPLE Despite stereotypes that are bogged down by historical context, M. Will is not a selfish artist. While some artists find themselves in a cathartic state of simply expressing their personal feelings, M. Will finds pleasure in a more challenging facet of art. We understood that the moment he told us about his favorite part of being an artist. “The best part of being an artist is being able to see someone coming into appreciation of what you are making. When they are entertained watching it develop. Having people enjoy something you do is the best part,” the artist recently shared with the magazine. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR AESTHETIC? “It depends on what I am doing. I don’t like to be stuck doing one thing for too long. I use a lot of warm colors more than anything else. A lot of my stuff changes I use a lot of swirl patterns (which are done free handed) it adds chaos but it’s so evenly distributed that it sometimes interacts with the foreground.” WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF ART? “The first part is a physical manifestation of the intangible and the second part is all four remaining senses translated into one which is sight.”

n an era of self-proclaimed gurus and aspiring entrepreneurs, allowing your work to speak for it self is becoming a lost art. In our opinion, Melody Jeha who is the creative director at Destylio is an amazing artist. We appreciated her work before we even understood what Destylio does. Once we understood the genius behind the brand, we were hooked. “Destylio is a boutique styling studio that offers a wide range of styling services,” Melody said. “Flat lay styling has recently become one of our popular services and is mainly provided to bloggers, online businesses, and brands who are looking for customized stock photos that reflect their brand identity. These styled photos are used on their blogs, social media accounts and websites. We also provide event styling services for business events, seminars, workshops, boutique openings and other private events,” she said. YOU ARE IN DUBAI? CAN YOU DISCUSS WHAT THAT IS LIKE? WHAT IS THE CREATIVE SCENE LIKE THERE? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING AND WORKING THERE? “I have had the privilege to watch Dubai evolve over the years, transforming into a global city dominated by modern architecture and touristic destinations. People of diverse professions and backgrounds come from all over the world and live in this multicultural environment. Being a new- born cosmopolitan city, the amount of activity is quite high on all levels- especially in the artistic sector. Annual design fairs, competitions and international exhibitions are the highlight of Dubai’s creative scene. Dubai is full of liveliness, inspiration and opportunities, which makes it a highly competitive and highly demanding city to live and operate in.”

THE MIJARES EFFECT Alexander Mijares is without a doubt one of Miami’s premiere artists. The artist is known for his vibrant and hypnotic pieces, which have become his signature to his fans. “My style is my own. It has a strong Spanish influence and I combine stained glass motifs with street art,” Alexander said. With almost a cult-like following, it is surprising that Alexander didn’t pick up a paint brush until five years ago. “I always drew as a child, but I didn’t actually pick up a paint brush until five years ago. I needed a piece of art for a wall in my home and I couldn’t afford any of the ones I had found and liked. I have expensive taste, I guess. So, I decided I would paint one myself. I think that my Latin roots have influenced my use and love of color. I developed my signature style a few months after I started painting, and since then I’ve perfected it. I always wonder what my pieces will look like five years down the road, because my style is constantly evolving,” Alexander said. AS AN ARTIST WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE KNOWN FOR? Creating art that is beautiful and evokes emotion and movement. WHAT STATEMENT DO YOU WANT YOUR ART TO MAKE? I want it to represent originality. Every piece is deep rooted and a very personal display of self expression. I want my work to bring others joy.

BOFFA “I AM WORTHY BECAUSE, WHO CAN JUDGE YOU OR SAY OTHERWISE? I AM NOT A SPECTATOR AND THEREFORE I AM PUTTING MYSELF OUT THERE AND THAT MAKES ALL OF US WHO CHOOSE NOT TO BE SPECTATORS WORTHY...NO MATTER WHAT.” - GREGORY MAROUN The world of Boffa is becoming an international movement. Affectionately referred to as a fusion of the arts by the company’s founders, Gregory Maroun and Alex Shahim. Boffa represents and manages talent in music, art, entertainment and fashion industries offering a viable platform to talented people. The company’s principle focus is to move and inspire creatives to keep creating beauty in the world. Gregory Maroun who’s amazing art work is gracing one of our covers, is a self taught artist. We were immediately taken aback by the beautiful details of his work. What is the secret behind Gregory’s beautiful pieces? According to the landscape designer and artist, it’s all about three elements. “”Love, soul and heart,” the artist said. “Lead with your heart and the rest will follow,” Gregory said.

TROY SIMMONS “I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I CREATE” - TROY SIMMONS Troy Simmons work is all about survival. That is what makes his pieces so striking in out opinion. If there was one word that Troy Simmons had to use to describe his work it would be Durchbruch, which is a German term for breakthrough. That aesthetic is achieved by Troy’s choice to use concrete, acrylic and other construction materials.

Where do you get your inspiration? The Brutalist Architecture movement of the 1950’s is very influential to my work. While exploring southern Germany, I toured Feldbergkirche (Feldberg Church) by Architect Rainer Disse. I was intrigued by the large geometric shapes created entirely from board formed concrete. The hard, straight lines of the structure, surrounded by the Black Forest seemed paradoxical but harmonious.

“The ongoing series of work illustrates the necessary need to stretch beyond our physical and mental limits: pushing through adversity in order to survive” Troy said.

NOTEWORTHY ARTIST

“I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I REFUSE TO SETTLE.”

Cris LaNiese Smith Cris LaNiese Smith is an artist to watch. We love her clever pop culture pieces and her use of vibrant colors. What we found most refreshing about the artist is her interest in getting her art into the hands of others. “I price my art low because I want people who really love the art to be able to buy it,” Cris said. How do you want to be known as an artist? “I want to be known for my drive not my talent. Talent is God Given but your drive is what separates you from others and what influences other people. I have only been painting for two years so it’s not all about how there are plenty of other talented artist there are things that are that I still can’t do because I’m teaching myself as I go but I

want people to say I don’t know any other artists that practices their craft as much as Cris”. Do you fee like female artists are treated differently? No difference to me. Art is art. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said something that stuck with me, “The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are.” In my lane of art it’s no gender roles. Some people have seen some of pieces of naked woman and automatically thought it was a male who painted it. That’s only because of where their mind is. It’s simple thinking, thinking only a man could paint a woman so sexually.

NOTEWORTHY ARTIST “I AM WORTHY BECAUSE I AM A CHILD OF GOD.”

KIA KELLIBREW

If there was one word that Kia Kellibrew would use to describe her aesthetic it would be chaotic. If we had to add a word to it, it would be beautiful. What we appreciate the most about this artist is her use of vibrant colors that come together to make a transformative piece that is sure to whisk you off to your most fantastic dream. Based out of Atlanta, Kia is certainly an artist to keep an eye out for. How long would you say it took for you to develop your style as an artist? Forever lol, however as long as I am alive I will feel there is room for growth. I love to experiment and try new things.I love your digital art pieces. They are so amazing. What is your preference? Digital art or painting? There are different things that I really enjoy about each medium. For instance with digital art if I mess up I can always hit a quick command and undo, change colors freely, resize to any format

By: Ju’lia Samuels

etc. all at the push of a few buttons. But if Im painting by hand and mess up it’s a little more tricky to fix, yet there is something special about and even therapeutic when I paint a one-of-a-kind piece. Do you think that professionally female artists are viewed differently from male artists? Why or why not? I feel like it used to be that way back in the day but not so much anymore. As women I think we still have a long way to go for 100 percent equality. But with the free-spirited mind set of these new-age millennials there has been a rise in support for female artists.

As an artist what do you want to be known for? What statement do you want your art to make?

“Freedom of creative expression … there is no right or wrong way to be an artist as long as it’s true to who you are and what you want it to be.”

ESSENSIA Ingredients are carefully curated with an emphasis placed on premium local and sustainable ingredients. The executive chef of this culinary oasis located in the Palms Hotel 3025 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach, is Chef Venoy Rogers. The chef is serving up a medley of flavors that guarantee customers are not only satisfied but well taken care of. The farm-to-table concept guarantees that only the freshest ingredients are plated. What would you say is your favorite new addition to the Essensia menu? I have to say that my overall stamp or influence is my favorite. I have worked on many menus in my career and have been in love with a lot of individual dishes but over seeing this menu in entirety is a really good feeling. I made the reference or comparison to having a baby(of course not literally) but in process. Carrying around ideas and thoughts, thinking about names of dishes and what people will think about them. Then comes the point of a launch date which is a huge build up and lots of preparation and definitely some hard work. When the menu is actually launched it’s a huge relief and tons of attention and care is required to get it going. They say it takes a village to raise a

child, well it takes a team to launch a menu. Lots of people involved in making it happen. It would be unfair to pick a favorite. I am very proud of everything we do here. A FEW OF OUR FAVORITES

TASTEWORTHY SuViche Las Olas + Red The Steakhouse

SuViche Las Olas The SuViche brand is known for bringing together Japanese and Peruvian cuisines to create dishes that are healthy, fresh and affordable. The Las Olas location includes specialties created by Executive Chef Jaime Pesaque who has gained worldwide recognition opening some of the world’s best restaurants such as Mayta in Hong Kong and in Lima, Peru. The Las Olas location for SuViche is also home to Fort Lauderdale’s first Pisco Bar featuring more than 15 cocktails including homemade Pisco macerados or infusions adorned with ingredients such as gummy bears, lychee and lemongrass. Pisco, a Peruvian brandy, is blended with fresh berries, herbs and spices to create the perfect flavor profiles. Guests can try SuViche’s refreshing Pisco cocktails such as the Blueberry Thyme made with muddled fresh blueberries, thyme, lemon and a blueberry thyme macerado over ice. Other Peruvian ingredients such as Chicha Morada – a sweet beverage made from purple corn – is mixed with passion fruit juice and purple corn macerado to create SuViche’s sinfully delicious Chicha Maracuya.

RED The Steakhouse Peter Vauthy’s menu at RED The Steakhouse is legendary for lack of a better word. When you think of what makes a steakhouse great are the dishes that come with steak. Complimentary dishes are key to enhancing the steak experience. If there had to be a list of Peter’s all-star dishes it would consist of the chef’s donuts, mind-numbingly flavorful lobster mac and cheese and on occasion the alarmingly delicious six- foot Alaskan King Crab. The pairing of any of those sides with the Certified Angus Beef Steak is a pairing made in heaven. It all comes together to create the perfect dining experience. The beautiful decor. The flavor packed entrees. There is no denying that RED The Steakhouse is an experience all of its own.

ROHO Halloween Editiom KITCHEN

Roho Kitchen’s underground dinners elevate dining from a simple act to an unforgettable experience. When we are fortunate enough to get an invitation to the often six course dinners, we make it a priority to attend. The latest experience was a Halloween themed six-course menu, which featured savory recipies from the head chef of Roho’s Kitchen, Chef Jorge Montes and also featured dishes from Chef Irie. guests were greeted with a ‘True Blood’ Potion Wild Hibiscus Gin Cocktail Bloody Hell Bites, which consisted of Scallop carpaccio with blood orange sauce, parmesan herbed pop-corn Blood sausage flatbread with rapini, caramelized onions and saffron aioli. The First Course which was called: ‘Eerie Cremation’ was a potato cream soup with pickled shallots and crispy prosciutto, roasted chillies

The second course cleverly titled: ‘Moldy Dead Leaf Garden’ consisted of roasted calabaza salad with endives, maple-lemon glaze, gorgonzola and candied pecans. Every dish improved on the last dish. The fifth course was

Curried pork with cranberry bacon brussels, coconut foam and chicarrones dust. For dessert we had ‘Death by Jack-OLantern,’ which was a Pumpkin chocolate mousse with spiced peanut butter ash

Right in the heart of Las Olas night life is a culinary gem that is taking American comfort dishes and making them obedient to Bull Market Kitchen 210 SW 2nd St Fort Lauderdale. There aren’t many places whipping up Captain Crunch chicken fingers coated with peanut cereal served with house made whole grain honey mustard. And there certainly aren’t many places serving grilled cheese flights served in roasted tomato basil shots. The newly introduced BBQ menu features dishes with such compelling flavors that it almost feels as if you have transported back to your favorite southern kitchen filled to the brim with bold flavorful dishes and love. Our immediate favorite has to be the restaurant’s 14-hour smoked brisket served with bacon-garlic smashed potatoes and beer roasted corn and cast

NOTEWORTHY DIALOGUE

“I AM WORTHY BECAUSE EVERYONE IS.”

DANNY SAPANI

Photographer: Klaus Kalde

Best known for his acclaimed role as the elusive, mysterious ‘Sambene’ in Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful,” accomplished and versatile character actor DANNY SAPANI is a force to be reckoned with, playing diverse and powerful roles in notable projects such as “Misfits,” and “Doctor Who,” and was seen starring opposite Stephen Moyer, Lee Jones, and Katey Sagal as “Berber the Moor,” a pivotal character in FX’s answer to “Game of Thrones,” the highly anticipated medieval drama epic THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER

Diversity was the hot topic for this year when it came to television. What are your thoughts about diversity in television and film? Do you think there was a lack of diversity in the past why or why not? What are your thoughts about the future of diversity in television in film and television? “It’s very much a hot topic – I feel we are at crisis point in fact. For too long have the contributions of black people and other minorities (even women) being slighted on our screens, in history and across our popular culture. Without these representations accurately portrayed, we lose a vital part of

the jigsaw in deciphering our past and inspiring our children’s future. A collective effort is needed to address this to stop what we now view as important representation being weird or obsolete in the future. To make a costume drama, whether set in the 1700s or the ’70s and to not have a single person of colour on set is preposterous yet is happening all too frequently. The issue is simply that those in power want to tell their own stories, and see their own faces, at the exclusion of others. It’s vital that a shift in diverse representation at the top level happens so we get to tell our own stories and create a realistic legacy for the future.”

HERE COMES Trubel J

acqueline Toboni may star in a hit TV series based on fairy tales, NBC’s Grimm but some might describe her road to landing a guest starring role on a hit series was in fact the stuff fairy tales are made of.

“I would say the best and worst thing about Trubel is that she is stubborn. She normally needs to learn the hard way. I am also a family person. So I would say that is the biggest difference.”

While attending the University of Michigan, Jacqueline was discvoered in class by the executive producer of the show (Jim Kouf) who came to speak to her screenwriting class. As a part of his presentation he had a table read with some of the students, but was incredibly impressed with Jacqueline.

What do you like about your character the most?

“He was very honest with me. He told me that I might be a great fit for a character on the show. I auditioned in LA and Portland,” Jacqueline said.

Where would you like to see yourself in the next few years?

What is even more amazing is that she managed to audition and film for the role all before graduation. “My professors were very supportive. This is what we were studying for afterall. So I was allowed to finish up my program independently and graduate.” What would you say is the biggest difference between you and your character on the show?

“I love how strong and resourceful she is. I really enjoy playing someone who is so powerful and still has so much room to grow.”

“ I just hope to keep improving on my craft and really using this amazing opportunity to open more doors in my career. I know what I have been given and I know I have to work hard to make the most out of this opportunity.” What advice or call to action would you give to someone about pursing their dreams? “I would say to keep going and remain focused on what you want to achieve. Just don’t give up.”

THE GATEWAY Established in 1951 the Classic Gateway Theatre,1820 E. Sunrise Blvd, truly is a gateway to a time of effortless glamour, charm and beauty. Historic images of film icons grace the walls of the theatre as moviegoers walk into the spacious lobby that hosts a sit down cafe. From the aroma of the popcorn to the warm green walls and chic vintage decor, you can’t help but feel that this is how it had to have felt to go see a motion picture back in the 1950s. We had the opportunity to speak with George Kaspriske managing partner of the Classic Gateway Theatre about the unique traditions of the theatre and what he loves the most about the standard Gateway experience. I know why I love Gateway. But in your own words how would you describe the standard Gateway experience? What do you think is the most unique element of the theatre? “The gateway offers you the big screen experience with a classic ambiance without the hassle of the big multiplexes. We also play many independent movies you won’t find elsewhere and serve the world’s best popcorn.” As a movie buff, I have seen a few theaters come and go (or at least change their name) What do you think has contributed to Gateway’s success? ‘The gateway I believe owes its success to always being the local neighborhood theatre where you can see the best movies around, and always changing with the times without losing its special charm.” How often does the theatre play Rocky Horror? How did that become a tradition? “Rocky Horror plays every first and third Saturday of the month at Gateway. It actually all started about 4 years ago, when my wife to be, Kellie, was running the shadow cast that performs the movie. She pitched the idea to us, and we ran with it.”

TRUSTWORTHY REVIEW: JORG GRAY JG 650083 Jorg Gray is a watch maker that has garnered recent attention for it’s Presidential Collection of watches which have become popular as the preferred timepiece of President Obama and his Secret Service detail. Upon receiving the J650083, the President’s reason for choosing this watch were apparent. The JG6500 is a simply gorgeous work of art with Japanese Chronograph movements, aviator styled embellishments, a sapphire crystal lens, stainless steelRose Gold casing and an Italian crocodile leather strap. The Jorg Gray 6500 commands a stately presence while offering silent reassurance of it’s durability. The Rose Gold variant of the watch would make an excellent compliment to any suit at a state affair and stand firm under rugged conditions. As a reviewer, I was impressed by the perfectly balanced heft of the device. The watch face measures 41mm and it’s thickness is 13.6mm. The watch feels sturdy but not heavy. At first, the watch feels substantial but eventually it’s heft seems to evaporate. The device fades into the wrist becoming the unobtrusive presence that watches should be for serious consumers. The watch boasts many of the tricks demanded by modernity but it shines as an elegant, understated example of timeless craftsmanship. The Rose GoldJ6500 has a transparent undercarriage that offers its owner a peek into

the watch’s internal engineering and the sight is admittedly glorious. In the two weeks I spent with the JG 650083, I have once again fallen in love with the beauty of a watch. A great watch does not draw attention to itself. It’s beauty is reserved for those that the wearer brings in closely. It is a finerdetail or a punctuation point for a wardrobe. It is versatile and equally appropriate for meetings or social gatherings. For those I allowed to see the watch, it provokes an audible “Wow” but for those I choose to keep at bay, it never begs for attention. The essence of luxury is choicea choice in where I can wear the device, a choice in how many outfits it can compliment and a choice in whom I allow into my personal space to enjoy it with me. I highly recommend the JG 650083 as a Worthy Purchase and at $895 it is an affordable luxury Worthy of the World’s Leader.
