UCAS support brings Oxford and Cambridge success for Worthing College students Rosie Scordoulis had to take part in the gruelling winter pool but 10 days after the others had heard, Rosie received her letter from Robinson College Cambridge to read Biological Natural Sciences.

Rosie and Andrew have also both recently received their GOLD CREST awards for their excellent summer research projects through the Nuffield STEM scheme.

This year four students have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge. Nationally only 1 in 5 applicants gets a place so we have exceeded our most optimistic expectations.

Tom Reynard was the first to hear that he had been offered a place to study Maths at St Peter’s College Oxford. Tom spent a great deal of

time choosing between the different colleges but is thrilled to have been accepted at his first choice.

Andrew Jeffery has an offer from the prestigious Trinity College Cambridge to read Computer Science. Andrew has studied Maths and Physics courses and independently taught himself coding. This shows that you can get a place to study courses that you have not taken at A level or at GCSE if you show sufficient interest, commitment and enthusiasm.

Finally, James Willis, (see inside) a mature student who returned to college in 2012 to get back into education with a GCSE class and has been rewarded for all his hard work with an offer from Hughes Hall, the mature students college at Cambridge to read Physics.

Worthing College offers all students the opportunity to strive to achieve the highest level of attainment.

All four of these candidates have shown exceptional ability and determination in overcoming a variety of obstacles: from learning difficulties and ill health to traumatic accidents, in order to achieve these outstanding offers. We are very proud of them.

Aspire event brings in the crowds as students tell their success stories Our annual Aspire event was held on Tuesday 26th January with over two hundred people in attendance.

The evening event was hosted by Gabe Crisp and Ross Fuhrmann and was very successful in communicating and promoting the benefits of the Aspire programme to current applicants.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Jonathan Padley, Admissions Tutor from Churchill College, Cambridge was very clear in his message;

New website puts College in the palm of your hand

We are very excited about our new website which was launched in January. It has been developed in-house by our marketing team after four months of development.

The new platform is much more intuitive for the user and has a mobile site which is designed primarily for our students.

The site encompasses everything you need to know about the college and has been created to be able to easily navigate in terms of finding the relevant information.

Further developments are now in progress to add more video content, particularly about the many courses we run and to showcase the fantastic teaching and learning in which students at Worthing College are engaged.

Detective Inspector talks to students about the psychology of interview techniques

without realising it, and genuinely believing that they are telling the truth. The talk was genuinely useful (and enjoyable!) for students to learn about the practicalities of interviewing witnesses as part of their course.

This talk was part of a wider range of activities focussing on ‘working as a Psychologist’ in the real world as part of the A Level Psychology course.

We have also covered the role of the Occupational Psychologist and recently had a talk from Rea Monger, who runs the college nursery, about Child Psychology and working with young children.

National Apprenticeship Week is coming up in March (14th – 17th March 2016). The Apprenticeship Team will have a stand in the reception area on Monday and Wednesday of National Apprenticeship Week. Feel free to come and ask questions about apprenticeships!

These activities enable students to appreciate more fully the wide variety of roles a professional Psychologist can play, and what a qualification in the subject can lead to.

Business Administration Apprentices, Ashley Harrison, Hayley Gardner and Tom Hatchard have completed their apprenticeship! They have enjoyed their time in the Marketing Team and Library Team.

Ethan Wellerman has now completed his Activity Leadership Apprenticeship! Ethan now has a full time job with his employer SAMA Karate teaching Karate classes at various different schools and venues. Well done Ethan!

Worthing College is now approved to deliver apprenticeships in Leadership and Management.

We are offering frameworks in Level 3 Management (Advanced Apprenticeship) and also Level 4 in Leadership and Management (Higher Apprenticeship). These apprenticeships are suitable for those in a management position or those who have completed their Level 3 apprenticeship.

Opportunity Achievement Success Progression

Level 2 students look to the future at ‘Moving On’ Progression day On Tuesday 26th Januar y our Level 2 students attended Worting College’s Level 2 Progression morning. This event sees all Level 2 students attend a carousel of talks, alongside their tutor, to receive information about the options for life after their Level 2 qualifications are completed.

After last year ’s positive feedback we invited back Mark Anderson, a local jobs market expert, who provided an insight into local apprenticeships and opportunities beyond Worthing College. The students showed great interest as Mark outlined potential starting salaries for Level 2 apprentices and an average wage of £168.00 per week..

Jacqui Scerri from our ver y own Work Store, gave an overview of the important service that The Work Store provides and the

opportunities that it affords our students in terms of looking for full time employment and completeing good quality CVs and applications.

Northbrook College also attended and were able to tell students what courses and apprenticeship opportunites were available.

Students were then invited to attend our Learning Fair where

they could find out more about the courses available to them at Worthing College.

Curriculum Managers were also available to help point students in the right direction. Feedback from students was positive and they are now seriously considering their progression options and opportunities for next year. We wish them all well.

‘Best Sixth Form Chemist’ award for Brandon To encourage students to study chemistry at University, The Chemical Industries Society offers annual awards to schools and colleges.

The award (a certificate and book token) is for a student applying for a chemistry degree and achieving high grades in the Year 12 AS exams.

We had several candidates this year, and Brandon Brockhurst was chosen for the huge personal effort, commitment and determination that he showed while achieving an A at AS Level. Winning students are

presented with certificates at ceremonies held at universities around the country. Unfortunately the closest was Reading and Brandon could not attend so Vice Principal Paul Riley presented him with his well - earned award at a lunchtime meeting of the college Chemistr y Club. Brandon has several offers to study Chemistry at University and we look forward to watching his career develop. Obviously the Science department are delighted for Brandon and we would all like to offer our congratulatons too.

Celebrating Worthing College

Powerful performance of Chelsea’s Choice presents challenging issues

On Monday, 8th Februar y over 200 of our students attended a performance by Applied Theatre specialists AlterEgo Creative Solutions of the play ‘Chelsea’s Choice’.

Feedback from staff and students who attended was really positive not least about the courtesy and respect shown by our students to the performers and the issues portrayed.

The play - which has now been seen by over 200,000 young people around the UK - told the story of a group of three students who discover the diary of a girl called Chelsea.

Chelsea was a young girl who, having fallen out with her friends and family, was approached by a man called Gary. Gary was older, owned a car, had a flat and initially treated her kindly and like an adult.

Unfortunately Gary had other more sinister intentions! Chelsea’s stor y was played out and examined by the three students along with their teacher in an attempt to understand what happened to Chelsea and how it could have been prevented.

The 40 minute production and postshow Q&A proved highly effective in raising awareness of:• Healthy Relationships • Safe Internet Use • Risky Behaviour • The Grooming Process • Child Sexual Exploitation • Where young people can go for help and advice We fully recognise our duty as a college to raise awareness of this subject to our parents and carers as well as to our students and to this end we have posted on our website a leaflet targeted at parents/ carers on Child Sexual Exploitation produced by the West Sussex Local Children’s Safeguarding Board which you can find at http://www.worthing. ac.uk/#!news-and-events/ib4xr

Sports teacher Vanessa Rhymes took a group of Year 13 BTEC sports students to Chelsea’s Choice theatre production and said “I was impressed not only by the content of the production and how powerful it was but also by the brilliant way students managed themselves with the play. It was compelling and yet challenging in its content which meant that students had to handle some complex, sensitive issues.

After wards we spent time discussing the importance of the topic and how it can have an impact on people and how we can build strategies in future to keep ourselves and our families safe”.

Thanks to the staff who brought their groups over to the Warren. Early feedback is ver y positive and we will seek to build this event into our college calendar for the future.

Opportunity Achievement Success Progression

Visual Arts School Network looks into collaborations with schools and artists Worthing College Visual Arts and Media has been hosting a series of networking events with local arts organisations and schools. The meetings in January and February were the first sessions of an exciting project running until July which seeks to explore the potential for collaboration between local schools and artists/arts organisations with Worthing College acting as the central hub.

The Visual Arts Academy successfully competed for funding with the aim of developing closer links with feeder schools and arts organisations. The project will support CPD for teachers,

provide artists to work with students in the college and participating schools and will help the college and schools work towards achieving ArtsMark status.

Ultimately the project seeks to establish Worthing College as the centre of a creative education network for years to come. Attending were teachers from Chatsmore, Davison, Worthing High, Bramber Primar y, Photoworks, Culture Shift, Worthing Theatres, Creative Waves, Rounded Rhythms, Worthing Literary Festival and others. Supported with investment from Artswork and the South East Bridge.

Catering comes in-house to provide more choice and value for students and staff We have recently brought the catering service in - house and six months on we are confident that we have made the right decision.

The team has now settled into college life and are developing new product ranges to service the needs of the staff and student body as well as the many visitors we have on-site.

The two cafĂŠs now have a broader and healthier selection of food on offer at great prices including soup, salads, sandwiches and hot options everyday which include, roast dinners, curries, fish and chips, pizza and Love Joes Wraps.

One of the objectives was to work with suppliers to support the local economy and this has been achieved working with Southover Food from Southwick, Greenacres from Shoreham and Swandean butchers in Worthing.

The team also provides all the hospitality for both internal and external meetings and hirers using our facilities for meetings, events and conferences. In April we will be launching an outside catering service using the expertise we have in-house to facilitate a highly competitive catering service locally. Celebrating Worthing College

Students rise to Antweight Robot Challenge The much loved Robot Wars event returned to Worthing College with the ‘Antweight Challenge’ held in the Science and Maths Learning Zone in February.

Teams of students were given remote control units and a basic set of building materials such as cardboard, paper cups, plastic bottles and tape in order to fashion tiny lightweight robots which would then take part in a series of challenges such as a football match, a sumo challenge and a speed and agility test.

Ambassadors pass on ‘Lessons from Auschwitz’ to students As part of the Holocaust Memorial day a lunchtime presentation by A Level Students Liberty O’Hagan and Shanice Wamae was given in which they talked to fellow students about the ‘Lessons from Auschwitz.’ project they were involved with in November.

Stage 1 was an initial conference in London at which they hear the istory of an Auschwitz survivor. This was followed by a challenging ‘Day Trip to Auschwitz’ to see for themselves the terrible legacy of Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. Along with 200 students from other colleges and schools they saw the terrible conditions, the gas chambers and the haunting and iconic railway sidings through which over one million Jews entered and never came out.

Both students found this a life changing experience, and they promoted the message that it is up to all of us to prevent similar persecutions happening in future – the message of Holocaust Memorial Day this year is ‘Don’t Stand By’ and they got this message over very well to their fellow students.

Shanice and Liberty are also hoping to return to their old High School (Chatsmore) and give the talk there, fulfilling their role as Holocaust Ambassadors.

Lizzie dreams of going for gold and you can help her on the road to Rio Worthing College student, Lizzie Williams has set up a GoFundMe page to help fund her ambitions of competing at the Paralympic Games in Rio De Janeiro later this year.

Lizzie, who is a wheelchair racer, was born with Osteogenesis Imperfects, a hereditary condition which has caused her to suffer more than 60 fractures and more than 30 operations which have left her with metal rods in both of her legs and metal pins in her spine.

Lizzie originally trained as a swimmer as the lack of pressure in water meant there was less risk of fracturing her bones. She quickly became a national swimmer training with the Paralympic team but a broken back ruined her prospects and she had to endure three and a half months in rehab learning to walk again. Despite this setback, Lizzie has re-trained and was recently classified as a T54 British wheelchair cyclist racer.

Speaking of her hopes of reaching the Paralympics Lizzie said: “This national classification enables me to

Lizzie said: “I’m still hopeful of winning a place in Rio. The new season is just starting and I had my first race in Worthing recently. A great time was had by all, but most important was the £200 raised with a raffle and donations put in the box for the Brittle Bone Society. Lizzie Williams (SU Welfare Officer - see above) gave us information on the importance of this charity in supporting people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), and told us of her plans and hopes of representing GB at the Paralympics in Rio this year.

Celebrating Worthing College

Nursery celebrates the new year with a host of activities in and out of doors To celebrate Chinese New Year, we had a Chinese themed lunch, sweet and sour chicken noodles with spring rolls and prawn crackers. We made a dragon for our hallway and did lots of activities including colouring monkeys (as it ’s the year of the monkey) and Chinese firework pictures.

Ever y Tuesday Bobby comes in to do Gymboree classes with pre-school children. Bobby arrives with a magic bag full of different instruments, music, bubbles and more. We explore music from around the world as well as the fun novelty themes such as 80’s, Disco, Jazz and so much more.

In Forest School we have been exploring the wildlife in the pond, talking about their habitats and how it helps them to live. We also made pancakes on the fire to celebrate shrove Tuesday. We have also been re-enacting the stor y of the stick man and made our own stick men with the resources in our environment.

This month we’ve had an exciting revamp on the garden; new areas have been developed including a planting and a muddy digging area. We are hoping to gain some budding gardeners as we look to grow herbs and vegetables.

We have new storage sheds that the children can independently select resources from including mark making on the giant black board, giant construction blocks to create new experiences and maths resources to use on giant number cotton reels. We have also designed 3 fantastic cotton reels to help with the children’s learning and development. The three-seater bikes have been very popular for racing around on as well as the cart style bikes for transporting resources.

The results of our recent parent survey have been very positive and rewarding seeing improvements on last year ’s feedback. This year 100% of the parents agreed that issues relating to their child are dealt with effectively and sympathetically and our reports and observations are useful, this was up on

last years. 100% of respondents have replied saying they were satisfied or very satisfied with our nurser y.

A few of the comments received are below: “We are very satisfied. Thank you! All the team works so hard and are all so lovely, consistently concerned about the welfare and happiness of all the children.

My son has experienced such warmth and affection in all the rooms. I can go off to work knowing that my boy is well looked after and busy learning.”

“My child currently comes home happy and enthusiastic after her days at nursery. She is especially enjoying time at Forest School and Gymboree. It is such a pleasure to see her happy and thriving.”

“The nursery staff that care for my son are excellent. He seems very content and I know he has fun and is well cared for. The attention to detail from the staff is outstanding.”

Visit from REME brings ex student back to Worthing College Public Services students received another highly successful visit from representatives of the British Army, this time from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in January.

REME are the technicians, mechanics and fabricators that repair, modify and maintain the very different types of equipment that the Army has to offer.

After a presentation about the regiment and its vital role within the Army, the public services students were split into three smaller groups and challenged to complete some problem-solving and lateral thinking challenges. These included building a makeshift shelter from plastic tubing and connectors as well as building a free standing structure from limited resources.

Best surprise of the day was Lance Corporal Jack Buchanan, solider with the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.

He is a former public services student 2008-2010, who having completed his Extended Diploma joined the regiment and hasn’t looked back since. Tours in Kenya, Canada, the Falkland Islands, UAE and Afghan are amongst the few places he has worked in over the last five years in addition to completing a whole host of training courses, including sniper to further develop his skill set. A great advert for our course.

Some challenging lateral thinking scenarios also made them think too! The students were very engaged throughout the event, asking relevant questions during the presentation and using their communication, team working and leadership skills to great effect in the activities. All in all another successful opportunity to engage with members of the uniformed public services.

Worthing College student creates video for Macmillan promotion A 5 minute video to show cancer sufferers that there is light at the end of the tunnel has been produced by Worthing College student Mia Walton for Macmillan Cancer Support. The film features Andrea McQuistan who

talks about her battle with the disease and offers hope to other sufferes. Mia wanted to show someone who had overcome a very difficult time but was a survivor. To watch the video visit http://bit.ly/1SFwon2

Celebrating Worthing College

“Absolutely wonderful” performance of Rent keeps audience enthralled Worthing College Goveror Anita Sheldon took on the role of theatre critic when she went to see the Performing Arts production of ‘Rent’ in January and appears to have been very impressed.

“I very much enjoyed the performance. The subject could have been difficult for the students to portray, but they all gave very mature, professional and engaging performances. I was involved with the story from start to finish. It would be hard to pick out ‘best’ bits, but Angel’s green shoes must be up there! And the rendition, in the round, of ‘Will I Lose My dignity?’ was

incredible - so complex and well performed. I must admit to being emotionally moved by Angel’s death scene, and by Mimi’s almostdeath scene. It was an absolutely wonderful production. I have paid theatre prices to see productions of a lower standard, and the interval cake was lovely too! Please pass on my thanks and congratulations to all involved - not just those on stage, but also behind-the-scenes team and the staff.

We’d like to echo those words, the Performing Arts team continue to put of brilliant shows of an incredibly high standard which should be celebrated and enjoyed by everybody.

There’s no business like snow business Planning for adverse weather

Keeping the college open and safe when the weather is very cold or indeed should it snow is a priority for all our students and staff to ensure that teaching and learning is not disrupted. We also have a responsibility towards the many other users of our 18 acre campus who would rely on us to ensure their business could carry on despite any adverse weather conditions.

This includes Children First Nursery and Forest School, Open University, Southdowns Leisure, West Sussex Music, Kingdom Faith Church, Oak Tree Clinic and Euro Training.

To meet these objectives the premises team have taken delivery of a piece of equipment designed to ensure that we can effectively and efficiently respond to particularly cold weather and in particular snow conditions with a BCS740 two wheel tractor from Burgess Hill based company Tracmaster who specialise in this type of machinery.

The base unit was supplied with two attachments; a snow plough and salt spreader and has already been put to work on several occasions.

Certificate in financial studies: Students learn about the ‘Perils of Unmanageable Debt’ We were pleased to welcome Mike Cooper and his colleague Carine Chaline, who are insolvency practitioners from Insolvency and Recovery Ltd, based in Worthing.

Mike shared the statistic that personal debt levels in the UK are a shocking £1.45 trillion (students had fun trying to work out the amount of zeros in this number, providing a useful maths opportunity). The level of personal debt is forecast to rise to over £2 trillion by 2020.

‘There is a need to teach young people about the perils of getting into the sorts of debt that could easily

unmanageable, like spending too much on credit cards and not being able to repay’ said Mike.

Carine shared the concern that “Many people bury their heads in the sand, ignoring default letters from creditors and end up in serious trouble which can affect their credit history. This leads to problems when trying to obtain credit when planning loans and mortgages in the future”.

Thought provoking discussions took place about debt management solutions and students learned about Debt Management Plans (DMPs), Debt Relief Orders (DROs), Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) and the procedures and implications of becoming bankrupt.

Mike and Carine really brought this significant topic to life by regaling students with real life examples and up to date figures. Students understood just how easy it is to get into debt and were left reeling after hearing about the 24 year old woman who amassed 35 credit cards with a combined debt of £145,000.

PREVENT aims to keep students and staff safe

Within our responsibilities for the PREVENT Duty, we have recognised our responsibility to ensure all our apprentices and students know and understand the British Values that we support and promote within our community. In doing so, we have acknowledged what these values are and what they mean in practice for staff, students and apprentices alike: The British values are: • Democracy • The rule of law • Individual liberty • Mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

A key aspect of safeguarding for our apprentices and college based students is the PREVENT Duty, which requires us to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”, support terrorism or being drawn into nonviolent extremism. At the same time to ensure that those identified with vulnerabilities are given appropriate advice and support.

The Government has defined extremism as “vocal or active opposition to fundamental British Values”.

What they mean in practice: We can all: • Recognise how all citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process; • Appreciate that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety; • Understand that there is a separation of power between the executive and the judiciary, and that while some public bodies such as the police and the army can be held to account through Parliament, others such as the courts maintain independence;

We have also highlighted that if anyone sees or hears something that could be terrorist related they should call the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on: 0800 789 321 We were delighted to work with Jo Ferris, FE and HE Prevent Co-ordinator from Thames Valley Police to conduct Prevent assemblies that took place from the 6th to 8th January for Year 12 students in college alongside our apprentices and with Year 13 classes timetabled during the sessions that took place. The assemblies gave an insight into perceptions of terrorism and extremism and recognised the diverse faces of both. They also explained the factors that push people into supporting extremist views and the dangers of media sources in building connectivity between terrorists and extremists.

As a follow up to the assemblies Prevent notices were also included in the first Year 13 Guidance Bulletin and sent to Apprentices in external workplaces.

• Accept that other people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminator y behaviour; and understand the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination.

In our first tutorial sessions after the February half term – tutorial notices were issued to students to reiterate the process they should go through if they have any PREVENT concerns around radicalisation or extremism.

This allies with the processes for safeguarding in that students are encouraged to speak to any member of staff and or specifically a member of the Student Advice and Support Team, Tutor or Safeguarding Team.

Opportunity Achievement Success Progression Charlotte Williams, AASE Girls Rugby captain, is back in the South East Academy for the 2015/2016 season after a two year absence.

Charlotte who originally came from Angmering School, wanted to move to Worthing College, because the rugby support and development and the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence provides the Academic success and sports opportunities she needed. After following the advice from the AASE staff, training hard and putting in some excellent performances for club, college and county she is now where she belongs, back on the England pathway! Now she is back in the Academy set-up and has her sights set on an England Under 20s trial.

“I have worked hard to get to this standard of rugby and I am glad its paid off. I’m going to spend the rest of this season working even harder to go even further with my rugby.

The AASE has been the thing to get me to this level because of the support and standard of coaching I have had in training and matches.

To be able to speak to qualified rugby staff, on every aspect of my game is so rewarding.”

Mark Rugman AASE Academy Manager said. “It is a welcome return to the Academy fold for Charlotte.

She has been an outstanding player for the college over the last couple of seasons, and this selection recognises the hard work she has put in. Since deciding to change her position from number 8 to prop, she has made great strides, especially in the gym, where she is one of the strongest and most powerful girls in the programme. We wish Charlotte, all the best, and we look forward to her reaching her goals and perhaps getting a place in the England squad.”

Men’s Football: Worthing College 2 v City College 1 The game started positively for Worthing with Ball picking out Nick Oxley with some sublime passes.

City College were always dangerous, however centre backs Joe Kennard and Danny BaezaWigzell were solid with full backs Joe Patching and Carl Boath giving them excellent protection.

Worthing deservedly took the lead from a set piece when Bull delivered the corner for BaezaWigzell to powerfully head home.

A fantastic effort to lead 1-0.

Worthing were playing very well and this was channelled through Liam Reynolds, who looked to get on the ball at every opportunity.

They kept up the pressure and remained in front and at half time.

With City College needing to attack more in the second half this led to Worthing getting more space and creating opportunities which they failed to capitalise on until Bull beat two defenders and squared for Reynolds, who side footed the ball into the far corner.

Another great goal to double the lead.

Worthing were in full control, however with time running out City College got back into the game with a superb curling effort from their number 10 to get back to get back into the game at 2-1.

Joe Kennard was part of a huge defensive performance and Worthing College held out to gain a well deserved victory.

Netball: Worthing College 31 v Bay House 13 Worthing College took a 10 girl squad to Bay House and performed very admirably against enthusiastic opponents. We were fortunate to play in their brand new sports hall and the game started quite evenly for the first few minutes whilst the girls got used to the different combinations against a strong and tall defence.

Men’s Basketball triumph in Dynamic Cup Worthing College 77 - 72 Angmering Worthing College defeated Angmering on Februar y 11th in an exciting match at the Worthing Leisure Centre to go through to the next round of the Dynamik Cup competition.

Worthing started slowly but soon found their form, dominating inside through James Felstead and Aaron Vincent. The game was going well for Worthing however, Angmering battled hard and kept themselves in the game keeping the scores close.

As the game continued they went on a run which saw them score 8 points without reply leaving them 1 point

ahead with just three minutes remaining. It was looking ominous for Worthing until Ed Lister came up with 2 big baskets to swing the match Worthing’s way and give them a hard earned victory by 5 points.

Will East was invaluable throughout the match and has been one of the most improved players coach Baker has ever seen during his time at Worthing.

Congratulations to the squad who were rewarded with a home fixture against The North School in the next round of the competition.
