more competitive universities or on highly competitive courses. Over 100 people attended the event some saying that it was ‘very informative’ and that they ‘were surprised by the amount of support they will receive’.

Just when you thought Christmas was over, we celebrate the seasonal activities enjoyed by students and staff at Worthing College. This edition of Celebrating Worthing College includes a Christmas roundup of stories and photos and, looking forward, much more, as we begin the Spring term of 2015.

There was an international flavour last term as the college hosted a roadshow for Chinese agents and international students experienced a traditional ‘British’ Christmas.

Sporting successes continue, Performing Arts are performing in ever more innovative spaces, literally ‘into the woods’.

To kick start the new year the college provided an ‘Aspire’ event for students who are aiming high.

More than 100 students and parents

joined us on 6th January to find out what will be on offer to help them achieve their aim of securing places at the more competitive universities or on the more highly competitive courses. Our Level 2 Progression morning provided a carousel of talks, alongside information about progression options once qualifications are completed. Worthing College students achieved success in competitions and quizzes and our apprentices continue to achieve success and progress their careers.

Finally we are delighted to welcome Worthing Leisure Fit4 to Worthing College; offering a fitness centre for evening and weekend community use. The facility includes a fully stocked 30-station health suite with top-of-the-range cardio-vascular machines. Also a large studio room where you will be able to enjoy exciting new classes such as “GRIT” which are group training sessions focusing on Cardio or strength. There are also popular favourites such as “Body Pump” and “Zumba”. Perfect for commuters wanting to get their fitness fix on route home. With free on-site parking, it’s the ideal venue for today’s busy commuter.

Brothers unite to inspire next generation of high achieving students Guest speakers at the Aspire event saw two brothers who studied their A Levels at Worthing College reunited at the new college campus to inspire a new generation of students.

James Davey, a Professor of Law at Southampton University and Michael Davey a QC Barrister both went on to study Law, they spoke about how they took very different paths to get to their highly accredited jobs today, clearly inspiring the young audience.

Other speakers included both past and current students who shared their experience of how the ‘Aspire’ programme helped them with their applications to university. Since the event two further Worthing College students have been accepted at Oxford: Michael Shelton placed at Exeter College, Oxford for Physics and James Brackin, an ex-student, has been accepted for Magdalene College Oxford, to study Politics,

Philosophy and Economics. The Apsire programme allows students to attend summer schools, go to conferences and lectures at universities and talks from professionals in their subject. This experience gives an admirable advantage for personal statements when it comes to making university applications. All in all it was a very informative and triumphant evening which was well received by all.

‘Moving On’ Level 2 Progression takes students to the next level On, Wednesday 21 Januar y, our Level 2 students attended Worthing College’s Level 2 Progression Morning.

This event sees all Level 2 students attend a carousel of talks, alongside their tutor, to receive information about the options for life after their Level 2 qualifications are completed.

This year we invited Mark Anderson, a local jobs’ market expert, who provided an insight into local apprenticeships and opportunities beyond Worthing College. Mark certainly knew how to interest his audience and outlined potential starting salaries for Level 2 apprentices. Our students were very interested to learn that the average apprentice wage is £168.00.

Northbrook College were also in attendance. They informed our students about the courses available to Level 2 students at Northbrook College and apprenticeship pathways.

Students were then invited to attend our Learning Fair where they could learn more about the courses available to them here at Worthing College. Curriculum Managers were in attendance to help point students in the right direction.

Feedback from students was positive and they are now beginning to seriously consider their progression options and opportunities for next year.

A great number of students expressed a firm interest in remaining here with us at Worthing College. We wish them well whatever they decide to do.

Lena Urquhart, music teacher at the college, has organised the concert beautifully for the last seven years, however with retirement coming she has reluctantly decided to step down and hand over the reins to someone else.

Opportunity Achievement Success Progression

Worthing College students win Hampshire Debating Competition Students from Worthing College have won the Hampshire qualifying round of the prestigious Debating Matters competition. The event was held in Fordingbridge on 11th December with the persuasive foursome overcoming experienced teams from three other colleges.

In their first debate Hannah Dickinson and Jon Deedman, gave a wellargued performance in favour of staying in the EU based on open borders and the strength of transnational, regional decision making on rights and environmental issues.

Despite vigorous arguments from two Year 13 students from Queen Mary College Basingstoke the Worthing pair won the heat. This meant that Daniel Porter and Stanley Evans-Power were in the final, debating the continuing benefits of Public Libraries with hosts Burgate School. Dan and Stan made a passionate plea against the closure of public libraries, appealing to the audience to remember their childhood selves enjoying visiting libraries and the joy of real books and asking that this delight be left open to

Worthing College will now be going to the regional final in the spring term in London.

The whole competition was an excellent team effort and all four students showed some very nimble thinking. However Dan Porter was singled out as the best individual debater of the evening.

Twelve students volunteered to assist at the Tide of Light firework event in Worthing on 5th November.

Around 20,000 people turned out for the event where a fun fair, night market and musical entertainment were available prior to the firework display from the pier at 9pm.

Our students supervised the craft

sessions at Worthing Pavillion, where children made lanterns that were to form the Tide of Light procession from the pier, through Steyne Gardens and into the town. The students helped to marshall the procession and also collected donations on behalf of the Lions International Club through street collections. This was a fantastic community event and we are proud that our students gave their time to support it.

Sanditon Conference Centre launches with Open House

TedX talks go live to REACH out

The Sanditon Conference Centre opened in November with a lively Open House networking session.

Canapes and drinks were served in the newly refurbished buildings within the college grounds was attended by an invited audience of local business people who were welcomed with a speech by Peter Corrigan, Principal. They were then shown around and talked to staff about the meeting and conference rooms available at this fabulous new venue and the opportunities to put on bespoke events.

Early Help aims to support families in need

West Sussex Business Improvement Service hosted the Early Help Partnership in October with nearly 100 delegates attending in the Exhibition Hall at Worthing College. The event was held to bring together organisations and individuals providing support to children and families in Adur and Worthing, and to discuss how we can work better together to provide the help that children and families need, when they need it.

The TEDxWorthingED conference was held at the Sanditon Conference Centre at the end of November. The theme for this inaugural event was REACH and how schools, colleges, universities, research and support organisations can promote the habits, mindset

and skills of the most effective students. The conference consisted of 15 talks from speakers across the educational sector. The event was live streamed throughout the day on the internet and also featured a pop-up cafe designed and installed by Caroline Barnett.

Worthing College hosts Chinese roadshow Worthing College was delighted to host the BOSSA Chinese Study Abroad Agency Roadshow UK 2014.

The opportunity to meet so many Chinese agents was most enjoyable and we look forward to seeing more Chinese students at Worthing College next year. We value the cultural and academic diversity of working with

Celebrating apprentice successes There have been many successes for our Apprenticeship Programme over the past few months with lots of our apprentices finding employment.

Kirsty Cherry has been appointed in a full time IT Support role at The Weald School after completing her Level 3 apprenticeship. Kirsty really wanted to work in a school, so as you can imagine, she was delighted when offered the full time role.

After a year with the Marketing & Events team at Worthing College, Lauren Lendrum now has a full time role at Chichester College as a GCSE and Functional Skills Administrator while Sarah Goldsmith has been rewarded for her hard work in the Marketing & Events department with a temporary role as a Marketing & Events Assistant.

Great news also for Otis Butler, Toby Ramshaw McConville and Cameron Benzie as all three secured full time roles with their apprentice employer Equiniti.

Congratulations also for Will Taylor who has been given a full time role at South Downs Bikes in Goring after his year ’s apprenticeship with them, and to John Graham who has been promoted to Duty Officer at Worthing Leisure Centre after completing his Leisure Management Apprenticeship.

Aspire lecture trip to Sussex In December, a group of Worthing College students from the Aspire Programme visited Sussex University to hear a lecture on Biomedical Anthropology. Professor of Social and Medical Anthropology at the School of Global Studies, Margaret SleeboomFaulkner delivered a challenging and wide-ranging talk covering her work in China, Japan and several African countries. Students found the lecture really inspiring.

Four creative media production students will be returning in two weeks to conduct the interviews which will be included in the documentaries they are making exploring the lives of service personnel.

Creative media production students today visited the Queen Alexandra Hospital Home in Worthing in preparation for interviewing armed service veterans as part of the ‘Training for War’ project with Worthing Museum. QAHH is currently the only Hospital Home south of London which provides specialist nursing care for ex-Servicemen and women.

Students come up with the answers and the money during a busy Charities Week For the last week of term, our staff and students put their heads together to draw up a list of events for Charities Week. Ranging from an intense chess tournament to an enjoyable but, hotly contested Christmas Science and Maths quiz, everybody was galvanised with generosity raising over £700.

All kinds of charitable activities were taking place all over the college. While Health and Social Care hosted the Anime quiz and cake sale, the Science and Maths Learning Zone was the location for the highly competitive Christmas inspired Science and Maths quiz won by ‘Sam’s Team’.

Fancy dress netball match

On the Tennis Courts a fancy dress match was held between the rugby and netball teams, whilst the traditional battle between the football and rugby teams had been held the day before on Hill Barn Lane.

The catalyst for all this activity was the desire to support two successful local charities ‘Grassroots’ and ‘Scope.’ The teams are hoping to “raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention” and create equality within disability. We wish the best for the two charities in the upcoming year and want to congratulate them on their endless commitment and hard work.

Nativity provides the ahh factor for parents It was a full house as usual for the annual Christmas Nativity put on by the children from our nursery at Worthing College. Wonderful costumes and big performances were admired by the parents who were treated to a heart-warming display from their little angels, stars, shepherds and monkeys! Well done to the children involved and thanks to the nursery staff who worked so hard.

The nursery also had a very successful Christmas fair where staff and children got to visit Santa and each received a gift. £160 was also raised for Chesnut Tree House with a wonderful raffle.

Raising dough for charity is a piece of cake for students The English and Social Sciences departments are celebrating having raised £459.90 with their raffle and cake sale. £100 will go to Papyrus, the charity who run the suicide prevention hotlines and the remaining £359.90 will go to Grassroots, the suicide prevention charity in Brighton.

A big thank you for the kind donations from local businesses; Waterstones, Thorntons, Capital Hair and Beauty, Splashpoint and Worthing Leisure Centre, The Dome cinema, Pizza Express, Sainsburys Lyons Farm, David from Social sciences for the Itunes Voucher, Richard and his mother Pam Kendell who donated the giant Pannetone and created the wonderful hamper, and of course River Island for their generous donation of our grand prize £100 voucher.

A big thank you to anyone who baked or ate cake and who sold or bought raffle tickets!

The success of the Christmas cake sale came hot on the heels of an earlier sale that had raised over £160.

It was put on by Social Sciences staff and students in support of Grassroots, a suicide prevention charity who do training in the community and raise awareness of the issues and the helplines available. We hope to have this training in college in June 2015.

This charity is particularly close to our hearts as one of our students, Collette, lost a very good friend to suicide recently. Collette really put in a lot of work baking and helping out most of the day as did many other students. Brit Stace made a huge number of cakes and stayed most the day and Amy Wilson was there right up until 4.20pm.

Opportunity Achievement Success Progression

Students past and present gather at the Eleventh Hour At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month a two minute silence was observed at Worthing College.

Hundreds of students, teachers and former students; “The Old Azurians”- (past pupils of Worthing High School for Boys), gathered

on the college field for a moving service on the sombre morning in keeping with the occasion.

A wreath of red poppies was placed on the newly installed memorial stone engraved with “LEST WE FORGET” during the ceremony reading to honour and

commemorate those who had sacrificed their lives. The wreath was placed by Colin Ilsley, the team manager for sport and public

services,

who

led

the

service supported by a large group of his students.

Mike Homer, a former public services teacher was also at the event and was able to share stories about his time at the college with the Old Azurians.

At the end of the service, the Old Azurian’s were given a tour of the College and shown the large War Memorial plaque from their old high school, which forms the centre piece of the Heritage Hall in the college.

When asked how they had found the service, they said “It was beautiful”, “simple but meaningful” and they especially commended the trumpet being played during the two minutes

WW1 event fires students’ imagination As part of the joint Public Services and Media WW1 project visitors from the Shoreham Fort showed students the arms and equipment used at the front. Public Services students took part in some Drilling (with mock wooden rifles) and learned how to throw grenades while some also participated by working as a heavy machine gun crew. Media students filmed and documented the event.

Royal Navy cooks up tasty career ideas for Public Services students In January Petty Officer Gavin Brown, Chef Specialist Recruiter, visited the College to talk to our Public Services students about careers in the Royal Navy.

His culinary skills were on show as he created a meal of meatballs and pasta from scratch whilst giving information about recruitment, life in the RN, dietary requirements, lifestyle factors and answering general questions from students.

In addition Gavin also showed a Royal Marine 24 hour ration pack

and talked through the contents, looking at calorific intake, energy balance, fluid intake and why a packet of Polo mints is included!

Splurge alert as Bugsy Malone hits town

Performing Arts students took on the ever-popular gangster musical Bugsy Malone in December and made it their own with an interesting angle allowin the audience to fully engage with the show by utilising cabaret style seating which immersed them into the setting of Fat Sam’s speakeasy.

However, being in the middle of the action could been seen as a double edged sword, because whilst it brought the audience closer to the performance itself, it also gave them an experience of what it was like to be ‘collateral damage’ when the rival gangs fought it out with the dreaded Splurge guns!

Winter Dance Show entertains December saw the dance department present their Winter Dance Show in celebration of students’ practical work, inspiring solo, duo and trio ensembles.

The show got off to a smashing start with BTEC Performing Arts’ exploration into the ‘ party lifestyle’ whilst exploring original choreographic ideas and incorporating props effectively into the piece. This was followed by a duet exploring relationships which was beautifully performed to Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’. Solos were performed to Florence Welch’s, ‘Spectrum’, and Woodkid’s ‘Run Boy Run’, which were incredibly exciting and had the audience gripped. The first act concluded with a Year 13 duo exploring a folk, polka theme and an AS duo which developed innovative uses of the stage space.

The second act included a jazz style AS trio which was hair-raising and mysterious, plus three Year 13 solos, each inspired by prolific choreographers. Last to perform were two contrasting AS trios. The first, presented a piece based upon Feminist ideals capturing the spirit of the well-known effort of women in times of war. The second, was a piece inspired by Rambert’s ‘Ghost Dances’ a fluid, ethereal ending to a very skillful and professionally presented show.

With a great ensemble performance, innovative set and lighting design, fine singing and more than a few nicely timed comic turns the show was a complete success and enjoyed by all who saw (and experienced) it.

Rain doesn’t stop play!

Wicked Witches, Big Bad Wolves, Rapunzel, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood and Milky the cow battled away before ever ything ended up ‘ happily ever after ’ in an innovative presentation of Steven Sondheim’s West End hit musical, taking the audience from the comfort of their theatre seats and leading them literally “Into the Woods” behind the Sealight Theatre. The per formance took place in a specially prepared outdoor arena in the heart of the Worthing College Nature Trail and represented Grainne Newark ’s directorial debut with Yr 12 BTEC Per forming Arts students. It was a brilliant and thrilling presentation packed with all our favourite fair y tale characters and much enjoyed by both audience and per formers alike.

Stars in their Eyes showcases stella performances A hugely entertaining and varied ‘Stars in their Eyes’ show was put on

by Performing Arts students and staff as part of Charities Week. The show featured songs from Legally Blonde, Wicked and Frozen, plus acts including Catherine Jenkins and Duffy.

Soggy sleep out fails to dampen spirits and raises £1324 for charity

In November 30 students and staff ‘Slept Out’ and raised an amazing £1324.26 for Worthing Churches Homeless Project, a local charity providing essential services for the homeless. A fun, but wet night was had by all, creating shelters and sleeping under the stars and the rain.

Thank you to Ron for opening up the East Café for a well-earned cooked breakfast, which was much appreciated by all. Students braving the elements: Woodrow Cox, James Freeman, Megan Chambers, Lydia Morton, Charlotte Cozens, Chandler Goddard, James Lewis, Oliver Lewis,

Senior Citizens entertained at Christmas party Friday 12th December, saw students and staff of Worthing College host their annual Senior Citizens party organised by the Student Union.

They served tea, cake and a range of dainty triangle sandwiches whilst enjoying the singing performances and piano tunes. It did take a little while for everyone to warm up and sing along until the nursery children

joined in. They had tinsel accessories and sang loudly and proudly ‘Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer’ and other Christmas classics. They were a delight to watch, particularly the little girl who was eager to sing Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake it Off!’ Many of our guests had been to the college Christmas Party before and were amazed at our new building. Student President Woody Cox was dressed up as a Christmas tree and Alan White got stuck in with his Rock ‘n’ Roll singing.

The party finished off with a quiz at 4pm and this was a definite highlight.

by just a few points. Overall, the Party was a huge success but perhaps next year we could get the real life Taylor Swift to perform ‘Shake it Off’?

Pig and a jig: Hog roast and Ceilidh ends year in style

A great time was had by all who attended the grand Christmas Hog Roast and Ceilidh in December.

The event was held in The Warren Ballroom where Worthing College staff and local dance club the Rocsters joined up to enjoy the double delights of spit roast pork

baps with all the trimmings along with a fast a furious Ceilidh/Barn Dance.

Whilst the impressive dancing talent provided by the Rocsters tended to put the college staffs’ moves somewhat in the shade, their lack of ‘Strictly skills’ was more than made up for by their energy

and obvious enthusiasm. The music was provided by Nick Pynn and Barry Wickens while the dancers were ably directed by caller Malcolm Thomas all booked by local entertainment agency ‘Find a Performer ’ while the delicious food was provided by ‘Lush Catering’.

Students make the most of Health and Wellbeing Day Students enjoyed another Health and Wellbeing Day organised by on site College Nurse Louise Trotter and Health and Fitness guru Nikki Gatland, with Stands providing help, advice and ideas about healthy living, improving one’s diet and being safe over the Christmas season.

There were all kinds of activities for students to get involved in such as magnetic darts and a remote control driving game which highlighted the effects alcohol has on driving.

Mystery shoppers look to improve Customer Service AS Travel & Tourism students went to the Sea Life Centre Brighton in December on a trip linked to their Customer Service unit.

The task was based on the students evaluating the quality of customer service provision against specialist benchmarks for visitor attractions and the Sea Life Centre being a zoo. The students then had to make their recommendations to improve provision for different customer types.

The students were given a talk from the operational manager and spent time being mystery shoppers to complete their report.

Safety & Security week looks at student safety The annual Safety and Security week took place in late November with a real emphasis on student safety. ‘Safer Scooters’ and ‘Safe Drive Stay Alive’ were promoted by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and the Traffic Police’s ‘Operation Crackdown’ focused on anti-social driving and speed awareness.

Voyage of discovery International and ESOL students enjoyed a trip to Portsmouth recently.

They took a guided tour of the HMS Victory for an on board experience of the world’s most famous warship.

In the afternoon, they also visited the Spinnaker Tower and even managed to have time for some Christmas shopping at Gunwharf Quays.

‘Safer Communities Policing’ offered help and advice about reducing crime and disorder while ‘Crimestoppers’ introduced ‘FEARLESS’, a confidential service for young people to get information on crime that affects them. ‘Operation Velo’ offered free security marking for bikes and there was also a Young People’s Violence Advisor on site to identify and assist people at risk of relationship abuse.

iPad Mini win Joshua Hauss from Worthing High School won the Open Event survey competition and bagged himself a brand new iPad Mini.

He came into the college in December and was presented with his prize by Marketing and Events Manager Anne Pithie.

Celebrating Worthing College

Women’s Rugby claims its first silverware of the season with tournament win Match report AASE Rugby On Wednesday 10th December 2014 the Worthing College AASE girls went looking for their first silverware at the AoC Women’s Rugby South East Finals.

They started with a hard fought 7-7 draw against Filton showing a lot of pace and making many good hits.

Maddy Burnage scored the try which Caroline Hodgeson converted.

In the second game some of the more experienced players took on Brockenhurst beating them 17-7. This game was important to the girls as they wanted to show improvement

from a 5-0 loss against them at the start of the season. They showed great positivity and aggression, and despite going behind to an early try they went on to dominate the game and win easily with tries from Katie Phillips, Alice Hagen and Caroline Hodgeson.

Finally the girls played Oaklands winning 10-0 with Alice Hagen and Caroline Hodgeson both scoring a try each.

Two friendly matches were set up against our Hampshire friends PSCs for the less experienced players. After narrowly losing the first game on a muddy pitch, Worthing dominated the second with Caroline Hodgeson scoring a first half hat-rick and Rebecca Sim impressing with her tough tackling. Overall it was a very successful day, and hopefully the first of many more to come.

Harriet Dunn, a stalwart of the Women’s Rugby team last season made her debut for Worcester Ladies against Saracens in December. Looking the more likely winners until some second half substitutions, Worcester lost to their Premiership rivals. According to the match report, Harriet “caused havoc” carrying the ball well and breaking tackles. Unfortunately she had to retire after the break through injury and Saracens took control of the match running out 34-5 winners. However Harriet had made a very impressive debut and had an excellent game.

Opportunity Achievement Success Progression

Basketball: Worthing march Badminton on in the National cup Championship nets stars of the future Worthing College had a notable victory in BCS National cup match on December 8th against a very strong Brockenhurst side. Originally the match was to be played in Southampton but due to a double booking the match took place in Worthing. Worthing College took advantage of the home court and ended up with a 52-38 win. This means Worthing advance to the third round of the National competition.

“All the team stepped up and our defence was fantastic today” coach Baker said.

Despite Coach Baker’s concerns about his offence Worthing have won 9 from 11 matches so far this season.

Netball: Worthing top League after great start to season

Having only lost one match all season (9/10) Worthing College had a great result in the Hampshire League beating Peter Symonds (the Hampshire National Schools winners and BCS South Region

winners). Watched by Year 7, 8, 9 & 10 girls from a local school they prevailed in an extremely closely fought match, winning by one point 50-49. Man of the Match was awarded deservedly to Lauren Steady by Symonds but it was an outstanding team performance.

Katy Begley only missed 2 shots all afternoon which is excellent stats, Alice Bowles changed the game 2nd quarter and Rosanna O’Mahoney worked tirelessly in attack and defence for an hour.

Worthing College students Abu Ali, Lisa Phillips, Jacob Jepson and Zoe Linfield represented the College at the Regional Badminton Championships in October. They fought hard, winning their first round matches and reaching the semifinal. They all played exceptionally well and ‘did the College proud’ finishing in a ver y respectable and impressive 3rd place in their categories (men’s and ladies’ singles and Mixed doubles).

The squad are also through to the next rounds of both the Sussex Cup and BCS Cup and are currently topping the Hampshire League table.

Football: Worthing advance in two cup competitions On the back of an impressive 3-2 win vs. Sussex Downs Eastbourne in the BCS League the excellent Lewis Blaney continued in goal and George Dennis was given his first start in the Sussex Schools County Cup against Cardinal Newman. Despite not really moving the ball quickly enough they were completely dominant and led 4-0 at half time. Worthing upped the tempo in the second half winning 12-0 and progressing to

the next round. Harry Russell did his confidence no harm with 4 goals on the day. George Dennis scored 3, Ryan Mackley added a brace,

Kieran O’Brien, Conor Bull and James Lower concluded the scoring.

Worthing looked to build on this convincing performance against the very competitive Merrist Wood 1st XI in the BCS National Cup. The game started very evenly and Merrist Wood looked good on the break, but Worthing’s back four stood firm and kept their shape very well.

They scored on the half hour and desrevedly led 1-0 at half time.

Merrist Wood seemed to take the initiative in the second half and equalised from a corner after 15 minutes. However Worthing showed their character going ahead with a goal by Kieran O’Brien followed by a third from Ossie Guile. Merrist Wood worked hard to get back into the game and scored a brilliant 30 yard

Worthing College have started playing local colleges including Lancing College and the Japanese School Rikkyo. This gives the boys a chance to play competitive matches against players of a similar standard. The boys have been playing well so far and have a few more matches to play. They have begun to show their technique and good form across the recreational league.

Celebrating Worthing College English:

Victoria Margree from Brighton University visited the college recently to give a lecture to A2 Literature students on Gothic Literature. Students took a lot from this visit and were able to develop their understanding of the genre they are studying for their exams.

Science:

Worthing College is hosting an A Level Science Specification Event in the Science and Maths Learning Zone on 12 February. The event will include input from the 3 main awarding organisations AQA, Edexcel and OCR (and information from WJEC), plus a keynote about Higher Education Institutions’ view on the A Level Changes.
