We’ve taken every precaution to make it simple and safe for you to return to live performances this year: • Upgrades to HVAC systems, including increased filtration and a new air purification system, thanks to the support of the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority. The new system uses needlepoint bipolar ionization technology to create safe, clean indoor spaces, eliminating 99.4 percent of airborne SARS-COVID virus particles. • Flexible ticketing with extended return and exchange policies to accommodate a post-pandemic environment. • Surface disinfection with an electrostatic sprayer, using EPA-approved, food-safe biocide — designed to kill coronavirus on surfaces within minutes. • Virtual engagement opportunities on select shows. • Continued adherence to guidance from the CDC, state and local agencies to protect the health of audiences and artists.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we make every effort to provide you with an enjoyable experience while keeping you as safe as possible. Front cover and back cover photos: The Opera Locos by Lighuen Desanto 2

After more than a year of closures and other limitations, of connecting to people and art through screens, we’re thrilled to welcome you back to live, in-person performances. Nothing compares to the power of theatre — the transfer of energy between artist and audience, the roar of applause, the thrill of sharing a collective experience. The 2021/2022 season celebrates our human journey with the best and brightest artists of this era. It’s time to celebrate, to remember, to laugh, to dance and to heal — together.

DANCE THEATRE

OF

HARLEM

September 22 & 23 at 8pm

Born in 1968 at the height of the civil rights movement, Dance Theatre of Harlem conveys a message of empowerment for all through the arts. Its founders, Karel Shook and Arthur Mitchell — the latter of whom made history in 1955 as the first black principal dancer in New York City Ballet — believe that the most impactful art is born in moments of extreme injustice and frustration. Now a singular presence in the ballet world, the 17-member, multi-ethnic company celebrates half a century of dance, performing forward-thinking, impassioned repertoire that celebrates African American culture through the language of ballet. A powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century, Dance Theatre of Harlem recently appeared on The Ellen Show after finding viral fame on Twitter, amassing 8.5 million views for a colorful outdoor performance video shot across various New York City locales.

JULIE FOWLIS With enchanting, crystalline vocals and a calming presence that “gently ushers the demons away” (fRoots Magazine), Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis is an unforgettable force in folk. In 2018 alone, she was nominated Folk Singer of the Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and Best Artist at the Songlines World Music Awards. Perhaps, though, she is best recognized as the singer behind the soundtrack of Disney Pixar’s Brave, an Oscar-, Golden Globe- and BAFTA-winning animated film set in the ancient highlands of Scotland. Brought up on North Uist in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides, Julie is a proud standard bearer for Gaelic music and culture, with sensitive and lush arrangements that transport you to another time and place.

AQUILA THEATRE IN

F. SCOTT FITZGERALD’S THE GREAT GATSBY February 4 at 8pm

Beneath all the glitter, glamour and glitz of the Roaring Twenties was a culture of success defined by extravagance — of classism and prejudice, of wealth, material possessions, and obsession masquerading as love. Though often romanticized in modern pop culture, The Great Gatsby paints an honest and moving portrayal of American society that still resonates today, an exploration of the quest for the American dream in the absence of true equality. Aquila Theatre’s theatrical adaptation of the famous novel uses clever and impactful design, superb acting and insightful direction to emphasize the connections between our current culture and that of a century past.

Now in its 50th season, PHILADANCO! continues to serve as a beacon of opportunity, inclusion and hope, representing people from widely diverse backgrounds and communities.

EPHRAT ASHERIE DANCE presents ODEON March 8 & 9 at 8pm

First introduced to Asheville through Dorrance Dance in 2018, Ephrat Asherie is back, and, this time, she’s bringing her own unique flair. Explore the complex narratives, innovative imagery and expressive movements of global street and social dance in this New York City-based company’s visionary new work, Odeon. Set to the music of Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazarath, known for mixing early 20th century romantic music with samba and other popular Afro-Brazilian rhythms, this work takes a hybrid approach to movement in more ways than one. The second collaboration between sister-and-brother team Ephrat and Ehud Asherie (choreographer and musical director, respectively), Odeon brings together different styles of street and club dance — only to pick them apart, pull them back together and create an all-new, remixed mode of expression.

THE OPERA LOCOS April 3 at 7pm

Five eccentric opera singers take the stage for an unforgettable (and unexpectedly hilarious) evening of physical comedy and repertoire from the greatest composers of their genre. Taking some of the most well-known operatic hits — music from The Magic Flute, The Barber of Seville, La Traviata, Turandot and more — and combining them with a bit of clownery and well-known pop classics. Throughout the performance, this eclectic ensemble reveals their hidden passions, personalities and desires, many of which bring about unpredictable and often sidesplitting consequences. This fresh and original take on opera brings a new perspective to the art form, while, at the same time, maintaining the international high standards for technique and artistic discipline. Photo by Lighuen Desanto

The Opera Locos was awarded Best Musical at the Max Awards for the Performing Arts in 2019. The Max Awards are considered to be the most important performing arts awards in Spain, comparable to the Tony Awards.

GOD IS A SCOTTISH DRAG QUEEN May 12 at 8pm

In an unforgettable comedy of biblical proportions, God, dressed in a floral powersuit, has descended to Earth to let off some steam — and, in the process, he skewers everything from Justin Bieber to the Pope. The work of acclaimed Canadian comedian Mike Delamont, God is a Scottish Drag Queen has won 18 “Best of Fest” awards at festivals across the continent, prompting some audiences to wait hours in line for tickets to this not-to-miss show. In a thick Scottish accent, God attempts to clear up a few misconceptions about himself and his role as the Almighty — and, peering over the rim of his reading glasses, he struggles to remain calm about his creation’s misdeeds.
