ARTRAGEOUS

Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 7 p.m. Diana Wortham Theatre

In this one-of-a-kind, season-opening experience, Artrageous combines all modes of artistic expression on one stage, creating a world where brush strokes and musical notes come to life in a burst of vibrant colors and infectious energy.

AFTER-SHOW GLOW

Grab another drink and party in the TMT

Described as “Picasso meets Blue Man Group” by The Chicago Tribune, Artrageous is a troupe of multi-talented live performance artists, worldclass musicians and highly trained dancers with a passion for all things art and community, showing the arts as an integral and valuable part of human existence. The touring performance company is based in Tijeras, New Mexico, at the Artrageous Arts Community — though the troupe originally formed as a street theatre group in the Kitsilano district of Vancouver in 1980.

Since Artrageous began touring its productions in 1990, the troupe has amazed audiences both nationally and internationally — including prestigious venues in Paris, Madrid, Tokyo and New Delhi — from Thailand to Tanzania. The troupe has also appeared on TV programs and as featured performers and educators throughout the country.

In each Artrageous show, high-energy performance blends with raw talent, humor and audience interaction in a frenzy of movement and color, leaving audiences of all ages singing, dancing and clapping along. Be amazed as the artists of Artrageous create visual artworks in real time, leaving their audiences guessing what each painting will ultimately become. Lines and brush strokes become portraits of famous icons in a matter of moments, all while musicians drive the rhythm and melody for the entire performance, belting out everything from pop to country in perfect harmony. In addition to visual artistry, the troupe also incorporates life-size puppetry into the performance, guiding the audience through a glowing blacklight dreamscape, where masterpiece paintings seem to appear out of thin air.

Part of Artrageous’ mass appeal is its ability to fully embrace the energy and enthusiasm of the audience, inviting them to be a part of the creative process by singing along, dancing in their seats and contributing ideas to the evolving artwork on stage. Every show is a unique and memorable experience as audience members become co-creators of the magic happening before their eyes.

Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 8 p.m.

Diana Wortham Theatre

Grammy Award-winner Kathy Mattea, one of the most respected country stars of her era, brings elements of folk, bluegrass and gospel to her music — with all the intimacy, heartfelt honesty and musical authenticity of a singersongwriter.

With a voice that is both warm and powerful, Kathy has solidified her place as one of country music’s most cherished and acclaimed artists over her nearly four-decade musical career. Born in South Charleston, West Virginia, Kathy’s musical journey began at an early age, influenced by the Appalachian sounds that surrounded her.

Her career breakthrough came in the 1980s, and she quickly rose to prominence with her soul-stirring ballads and catchy up-tempo tunes. She released her debut album, Kathy Mattea, in 1983, yet it was her second album, From My Heart, that earned her first chart-topping single, “Love at the Five and Dime,” and marked the beginning of a series of remarkable achievements.

Throughout her career, Kathy has garnered countless accolades, including two Grammy Awards. In 1989, her album Willow in the Wind earned her the Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the hit single, “Where’ve You Been.” The song, co-written by her husband Jon Vezner, touched millions with its poignant story of a couple’s enduring love in the face of Alzheimer’s disease.

Kathy’s distinct voice and vivid storytelling has resonated with fans and critics alike for generations. She possesses a rare ability to connect with her audience on a deeply emotional level, breathing life into each song she sings. Her lyrical authenticity and genuine passion have made her an icon of heartfelt country music, a genre that thrives on sincerity and relatability.

Kathy explores music’s most basic human essence through timeless melodies and uplifting narratives. Her music has spoken to millions of people throughout her career, and in recent years she has found a growing audience for the words and ideas she has to offer on a variety of issues, ranging from arts education to finding your creative path to global climate change. Kathy’s presentations seek to provide her audience with spiritual nourishment: food not only for thought, but also for the soul.

With a talented cast, stunning visuals and superb direction, this season’s riveting stage adaptation, based on Homer’s timeless epic poem, brings to life the heroism, passion and intrigue of one of the greatest and most ancient tales in Western literature — all through a fascinating and fresh new lens.

CONNECT WITH THE ARTISTS

Founded in 1972 by John Houseman and Margot Harley with the first graduating class of the Drama Division of The Juilliard School, The Acting Company has launched the careers of some 400 actors, including Kevin Kline, Patti LuPone, Mary Lou Rosato, Keith David, Rainn Wilson and Lorraine Toussaint — all while bringing sophisticated theater to hundreds of communities from coast to coast.

Among many accolades, The Acting Company won the 2003 Tony Award for Excellence in the Theater, and, more recently, the 2019 Audelco Award for Best Play for its production of Nambi E. Kelley’s Native Son, directed by Seret Scott. The Acting Company’s productions have been enjoyed by more than 4 million people in 48 states, 11 countries, both on and Off-Broadway, and at leading resident theaters including the Guthrie, the Kennedy Center and New York City Center.

Its latest touring production, Odyssey, shines a new light on Homer’s 3,000-year-old epic poem, reimagining the journey to home through more modern circumstances. Adapted and directed by Lisa Peterson, The Acting Company’s thought-provoking production poses the question: What will you do to go home again?

The adaptation follows four young women trapped in the limbo of a refugee camp, each retelling Odysseus’ adventures as they struggle with their own search for a home. A production based on the revelatory new translation by Emily Wilson, its bold theatricality brings new humor and grace to a story we all think we know.

ANDREW FINN MAGILL

Friday, October 27, 2023 at 8 p.m.

Diana Wortham Theatre

Virtuosic fiddler Andrew Finn Magill blends traditional Irish music with jazz, bluegrass and beyond to deliver a world-class musical experience like no other. Through dynamic playing, masterful improvisation and soulful expression, Finn’s performances are an electrifying fusion of old and new.

An Asheville-born musician, Finn began his musical journey at an early age, surrounded by Appalachian folk music performed by some of the greatest talents in the world. Inspired by these musical traditions, he immersed himself in the art of the fiddle, devoting countless hours to honing his craft and studying under esteemed musicians.

His dedication and passion for the instrument have led him on a remarkable musical journey around the globe — including a 2014 move to Rio de Janeiro to study Brazilian choro music. Since the debut of his first album in 2005, he has been featured on PBS, NPR, TEDx and MTV-U and has performed with John Doyle, Rising Appalachia, Charm City Junction, Open the Door for Three, Greg Ruby, The Paul McKenna Band and Peter Mawanga, among others.

In 2016, Finn returned to his Appalachian roots to release the album, Roots and Branches, which features original acoustic music inspired by Irish and American music.  His newest recording, The Polaris Project, is an ambitious album of ten original pieces written for an electric jazz quartet that synthesizes Finn’s years living and working as a musician in Ireland, Malawi, Ghana, Brazil and the Southern U.S. The band features world-class musicians.

Justin Stanton of the Grammy-winning Snarky Puppy, bassist Ethan Jodziewicz (Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle) and drummer Justin Watt of the Glenn Miller Orchestra — with special guests Malawian music icon Peter Mawanga and Rising Appalachia’s Leah Song. The recording is scheduled for a 2023 release. Finn’s performances are a testament to his virtuosic playing and his deep appreciation for the traditions that have shaped his music. Whether he’s performing toe-tapping jigs or hauntingly beautiful ballads, Finn’s fiddling is steeped in authenticity and a profound understanding of the music’s roots.

Beyond his prowess as a fiddler, Finn is also a gifted composer and bandleader. He seamlessly blends the old and the new, infusing traditional tunes with innovative arrangements and original compositions that reflect his own musical vision. His compositions are a reflection of his diverse musical influences, incorporating elements of jazz, bluegrass and beyond — resulting in a sound that is uniquely his own. With his boundless talent, innovative spirit and respect for tradition, he continues to leave an indelible mark on the world of traditional music.

WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR

A Jazz Tribute to 100 Years of Disney

Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 7 p.m. Diana Wortham Theatre

Witness the magic of Disney like never before and explore 100 years of movie music through the lens of jazz. For the last century, popular songs from famous films — from Snow White to Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins and Toy Story to The Jungle Book — have been interpreted and recorded by Disney music fans like Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Dianne Reeves and many more.

Performed by the house band of The National Jazz Museum in Harlem, “Someday My Prince Will Come,” “He’s a Tramp,” “Everybody Wants to be a Cat” and “The Bare Necessities’’ are just a few of the iconic songs to be celebrated in this unique reflection on the impact of jazz on some of Disney movies’ most memorable music.

The National Jazz Museum in Harlem is a Smithsonian-affiliated museum led by Artistic Directors Jon Batiste and Christian McBride, and is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and presentation of jazz. When You Wish Upon A Star showcases the talents of jazz pianist, composer and musical director Sean Mason, vocalist Kim Nalley and singer and multi-instrumentalist Sasha Dobson — backed by the talented troupe from the museum’s acclaimed house band.

Sean Mason is quickly emerging as one of the premier talents of his generation. Taking to the piano at age 13, Sean taught himself to play by ear — first performing gospel, R&B and soul, but quickly evolving into highly original jazz. Sean’s unique voice in jazz is steeped in Southern culture, giving extended time for groove without needing to fill in the space, while also displaying a range of vocabulary far beyond his years.

Kim Nalley, a multi-award-winning vocalist, exudes the aura of a diva from a by-gone era. Vocally, she can span a three-and-a-half octave range, with the ability to switch from operatic to gritty blues on a dime and projection that can sensually whisper a ballad or fill a room with no microphone.

Sasha Dobson has performed all over the world as a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and collaborator. She represents one-third of hit trio Puss N Boots, alongside Catherine Popper and Blue Note Artist Norah Jones, with whose band Sasha has toured regularly for the past eight years.

A SWANNANOA SOLSTICE

Sunday, December 17, 2023

at 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.

Diana Wortham Theatre

For more than 20 years, this beloved local holiday tradition has ushered in the winter season with a joyful infusion of performances by the best and brightest artists in our region. This year, the celebration welcomes the next generation of musicians to the stage to spread seasonal warmth, magic and cheer with Celtic, American-roots and world-influenced music, rousing dance and timeless stories — illuminating winter’s darkest day with wonder and peace.

Returning this season is the innovative folk sensation Zoe & Cloyd, renowned fiddler Josh Goforth, beloved highland bagpiper EJ Jones & The Piper Jones Band and seasoned storyteller Becky Stone, who will double as the emcee for this year’s holiday celebration.

Zoe & Cloyd is a local sensation and husband-and-wife duo, comprising renowned fiddler and vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist John Cloyd Miller. Their soaring harmonies, heartfelt songwriting and rousing instrumentals seamlessly combine original bluegrass, klezmer and folk music with sincerity and zeal. Josh Goforth, a rising acoustic star and Grammy nominee, has been playing music and performing for nearly his entire life, and, as the great-great-great-grandson of Madison County fiddler Asbury McDevitt, music is in his DNA.

EJ Jones has been performing traditional Highland bagpipe and folk music since he first picked up the pipes in 1987. As The Piper Jones Band, he and bouzouki player Frances Cunningham bring authentic, traditional tunes from Ireland, Scotland and Appalachia to the stage in a fresh and entertaining way. Professional storyteller Becky Stone joined the lineup in 2022, amazing audiences with her inspiring tales and conjuring vivid imagery through spoken word. She returns this season with a new set of stories sure to uplift and inspire.

New to the celebration this year is Grammy-nominated Irish multi-instrumentalist John Doyle and acclaimed Asheville songstress Jane Kramer. Doyle’s remarkable talent and innovative approach to traditional Irish music have left an indelible mark on the folk music scene, including his status as a founding member of the acclaimed Celtic band Solas. Kramer has garnered international recognition for her sultry, heartrending vocals and heavy-hitting lyrical eloquence — once lauded by UK music reviewer Three Chords and the Truth as sounding like she was “born to bohemian poets and raised in the mountains by Emmylou Harris.”

These creative, charismatic musicians perform a mix of Celtic, American-roots and world-influenced music to dazzle audiences during the annual event, reflecting the heritage of the hills and spreading a peaceful, united and uplifting message perfect for the holiday season.

EMMA LANGFORD

Friday, January 12, 2024 at 8 p.m.

Diana Wortham Theatre

An award-winning songwriter and performer, Emma Langford’s work pivots on an axis of myth, history, identity and femininity. Writing songs imbued with all the humor, vibrant imagery and drama of the rugged west coast of Ireland, she is fast becoming a household name and a firm fixture on the Irish folk and songwriter scene.

“A treasure in Ireland’s music scene” –The Irish Times

Hailing from Limerick City, Ireland, Emma’s inimitable, dreamy voice is at the frontline of a new wave of Irish folk. Storytelling sits at the heart of everything this songwriter does — interweaving her live performances and shining through her works.

Following the release of her debut album, Quiet Giant, in 2017, Emma was awarded the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Award for Best Emerging Artist, and she has since been twice nominated by the national broadcaster for Best Folk Singer. In 2019, she became the first-ever recipient of the Dolores O’Riordan Bursary, an award created in memory of the late singer from Limerick to promote creative arts projects in the city. That same year, Emma made her U.S. debut at the world’s largest celebration of Irish music, Milwaukee Irish Fest. In 2021, she received the Music Network RESONATE residency and the Arts Council of Ireland Agility Award to support a continuing musical exploration of women in Irish history.

Emma released her sophomore album, Sowing Acorns, in 2021 to mass international praise, climbing the charts with her epic folk ballad, “Birdsong,” a collaboration with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. Later that year, she was selected to perform at the prestigious Ireland Music Week international showcase and on RTÉ’s Ireland In Music, which was broadcast across the world to a huge global audience.

Emma has been called “a treasure in Ireland’s music scene” by The Irish Times, “impressive, arresting and defiant” by The Irish Independent and “one of the more exciting and radical Irish talents of the moment” by Irish Music Magazine. Folk singer-songwriter Janis Ian even praised the up-and-coming talent, saying: “I absolutely love her music and the way she thinks. She’s someone I hope to work with myself one day.”

INDIAN INK presents MRS. KRISHNAN’S PARTY

Monday–Wednesday, February 26–28, 2024 at 7 p.m. Tina McGuire Theatre

You’re invited to Mrs. Krishnan’s party, an interactive show that turns audience members into welcomed guests. A theatrical gem created by Indian Ink Theatre Company, Mrs. Krishnan’s Party is a heartwarming and humorous exploration of human connections and cultural celebration.

“Mrs. Krishnan’s Party is a triumph of both interactive theatre and human spirit.”

–The 13th Floor

Co-founded by Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis, the New Zealand-based Indian Ink has been enchanting audiences for more than 25 years with its unique blend of artful storytelling, mischievous wit, theatrical magic and cross-cultural narratives that aim to connect us through our shared humanity. Since its beginnings in 1997, the company has earned 13 international awards, critical acclaim, standing ovations and multiple sell-out seasons for its ability to promote community and foster empathy in audiences across cultures.

Set in the heart of Auckland, Mrs. Krishnan’s Party centers on the vivacious title character, a warm and charismatic widow who owns a small corner shop, called a “dairy” in New Zealand. Her tenant, James — a young, larger-than-life DJ who rents an apartment attached to the store — has invited a few friends into the back room of the shop as a special surprise to celebrate Onam, an ancient Hindu festival. But when dozens and dozens of strangers turn up (you, the audience), James has no choice but to throw the party of Mrs. Krishnan’s life.

Mrs. Krishnan’s Party is an immersive experience like no other, where audiences are invited to join the party with music, dancing, bites to eat and more. Garlands decorate the ceiling, music flows, food simmers on the stove, laughter abounds and strangers become fast friends in this joyous celebration of life. No two nights are ever the same in this deliciously fun experience, as actors juggle cooking, music, guests and unfolding drama.

Throughout the course of the party, performers Kalyani Nagarajan and Justin Rogers display an impeccable ability to improvise, blending scripted and unscripted narratives to create a truly immersive experience that blurs the lines between performer and audience. At Mrs. Krishnan’s Party, everyone is swept up in the joyous chaos of the celebration — or, as Waikato Times wrote, the show is “so different, so original, so creatively fresh and so fun no one wanted to go home.”

IVY ROWE from the Lee Smith novel Fair and Tender Ladies

Thursday & Friday, April 11 & 12, 2024 at 7 p.m.

Tina McGuire Theatre

Pure theatrical exhilaration awaits in this OffBroadway, Edinburgh Fringe-approved hit, which follows a spunky mountain woman on a journey through life “livin’ on love.” Based on author Lee Smith’s Fair and Tender Ladies, a fictional ode to the history of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ivy paints a vivid picture of 20th century revivals, mine disasters, rural electrification, the Depression and three wars — a stirring adaptation The New York Times dubbed “a rare and heartfelt performance that pays tribute to the women of Appalachia, and to the heroism of strugglers everywhere.”

Performed and co-adapted by theatre icon Barbara Bates Smith, “Ivy Rowe” has toured to prestigious venues across the world for more than 30 years. Armed with a course in Autobiographic Storytelling from noted monologist Spalding Gray — plus her own repertoire of first-person shows as a springboard — Barbara has found great joy in getting other people’s stories, then embodying those characters, like Ivy, on stage. A winner of the Southeastern Theatre Conference’s Best Actress award, Barbara has spent much of the last half-century both on stage and behind it, producing, writing, adapting and acting. Currently based in South Carolina, Barbara has enjoyed featured roles in regional productions, including North Carolina Stage Company’s “4000 Miles.”

“I used to be a scandal. Now I’m an institution,” Barbara writes of her beloved and longest-standing performance, which is directed and co-adapted by Mark Hunter. “Lee Smith has asked, ‘Don’t you ever get tired of doing this?’ No. Never. … It’s been a thrill each time. Its special magic both grounds and uplifts me; if I miss too many months, I get restless. And in hard times I remember Ivy’s advice: ‘You gotta keep on keepin’ on.’”

Author Lee Smith wrote that Barbara’s stage adaptation of her character “has been one of the great joys of my life. Barbara is Ivy Rowe! …. No writer has ever been better served by a production of her work.”

LIZZY & THE TRIGGERMEN

Saturday, April 13, 2024 at 8 p.m.

Diana Wortham Theatre

Exuding all the old-school glamour of jazz, swing and blues, Lizzy & the Triggermen is a captivatingly modern, chart-topping band that churns out killer dance songs in a way only a wailing horn section can — transporting vintage jazz to a red-hot new future.

Part of Lizzy & the Triggermen’s “time traveling genius” (Music Connection) is the band’s ability to thrillingly marry the old with the new, selling out legendary venues like the Troubadour and rising to No. 3 on the jazz charts alongside heavyweights like Miles Davis and Kamasi Washington. Like the great tunes of the 1930s from which they draw inspiration, Lizzy & the Triggermen’s music boldly tackles modern troubles and turns them into high-energy numbers that fill the audience with joy. As their debut EP succinctly states: they make “Good Songs for Bad Times.”

At the helm is Lizzy Shapiro, a charismatic siren with a searing wit and soaring voice. Her “powerhouse vocals” (Broadway World), which were forged during her time singing opera, recall the great classic divas while still sounding completely unique and new. Her songwriting is filled with the same biting humor she once used to create TV comedies for HBO, Amazon, Legendary, CBS and the History Channel, garnering multiple Emmy nominations.

But the star power doesn’t stop with Lizzy. It emanates through her entire incredible band, a multigenerational dream team of musicians who have played with everyone from Wynton Marsalis to Benny Goodman. While the band is deeply rooted in the sound and swagger of those that came before them, their music is infused with unexpected influences, from R&B to bebop, Broadway to indie-rock — and even opera. As Lizzy and musical director Dan Barrett (who played with and arranged for Benny Goodman) decided from the jump, they weren’t going to pretend like the last 90 years of music hadn’t happened.  While there is no doubt that what Lizzy & the Triggermen are doing is audaciously against the grain, their fan base has proved that their music resonates across an array of audiences. As “one of the hottest swing bands in LA” (Good Day LA), this iconic and soul-stirring group — led by a “brassy and charismatic frontwoman” whose powerhouse vocals are “dripping with baditude” (The New Times) — is not one to miss this season.

STEP AFRIKA!

Friday & Saturday, April 19 & 20, 2024 at 7 p.m.

Diana Wortham Theatre

Feel the irresistible energy and heart-pounding rhythms of dance with Step Afrika!, showcasing a unique and vibrant form of dance that combines percussive footwork, call-and-response chants and high-energy performance. These multi-talented artists blend percussive African American dance styles, traditional African dances, and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into one cohesive, compelling artistic experience.

Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Step dance, an art form that combines elements of African foot percussion, traditional African dance and contemporary influences, is rooted in the historically black fraternities and sororities of American colleges and universities. Under Williams’ leadership, stepping has evolved into one of America’s cultural exports, with the company touring to more than 60 countries across the globe.

CONNECT WITH THE ARTISTS

Learn more about Step Afrika! and the art of stepping in pre-show discussions.

Ranked as one of the top ten African American dance companies in the United States, Step Afrika! takes the stepping tradition to new heights, infusing it with a fusion of contemporary and traditional dance forms, live music and captivating storytelling. This troupe’s performances are much more than dance shows. They integrate songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation behind a driving force of technique, agility and pure energy.

Step Afrika! promotes stepping as an educational tool for young people, focusing on teamwork, academic achievement and cross-cultural understanding. The company reaches tens of thousands of Americans each year through a 50-city tour of colleges and theaters and performs globally as Washington, D.C.’s one and only Cultural Ambassador.

Step Afrika! has earned Mayor’s Arts Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education, Innovation in the Arts, Excellence in an Artistic Discipline and headlined former President Barack Obama’s Black History Month Reception at The White House. The company is featured prominently at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture with the world’s first interactive stepping exhibit.

ROBERT DUBAC’S STAND-UP JESUS

Friday & Saturday, May 3 & 4, 2024 at 8 p.m.

Tina McGuire Theatre

BRUNCH WITH JESUS

Saturday & Sunday, May 4 & 5, 2024 at 11 a.m.

Diana Wortham Theatre stage

Jesus of Nazareth returns after 2,000 years, but this time he’s no carpenter — he’s a stand-up comedian. Shining the light of truth on false prophets, duplicitous politicians and immoral sheeple, J.C.’s razor sharp satire has been intelligently designed to redeem sinners of all faiths.   This season, comedian Robert Dubac, the creator of The Book of Moron, is back with his rare breed of humor, channeling what God created on the eighth day: comedy. Drawing on his decades of experience as a writer, actor and stand-up comic, Dubac is a seasoned professional when it comes to creating one-man shows that explore social mores, political ideas and the complexity of the human experience. He belongs to a rare breed of humorists who make comedy smart and tragedy funny. Using humor that is both intelligent and absurd, he dissects culture with a jaundiced and probing eye, boggling minds with rapid-fire satire while simultaneously crafting simple stories that bind us together.

It’s a Second Coming blessed with punchlines!

Last season, Dubac shined as a Wortham audience favorite in The Book of Moron, employing his unmatched ability to combine the boisterous laughter of stand-up with the staggering thrill of live theater. PBS has praised Dubac’s works as “altogether irresistible satire,” in which the comedian “ingeniously nails the current regrettable state of the nation and the world at large.” Now, Dubac returns as Jesus himself to resurrect satirical comedy — so let he who is without sin cast the first heckle!

Bear witness to a truth that hurts and a truth that’s funny in Stand-Up Jesus. It’s a Second Coming blessed with punchlines — with two special Brunch with Jesus weekend performances held on the Diana Wortham Theatre stage, so you too can break bread with the Lord. Heaven help us.

STEWART/OWEN DANCE

Thursday–Saturday, May 9–11 and May 16–18, 2024 at 8 p.m.

Saturday & Sunday, May 11 & 12 and May 18 & 19, 2024 at 2 p.m.

Tina McGuire Theatre

Stunning audiences last season with their imaginative and impassioned performances, Wortham’s resident dance company returns to share their latest creation, which draws on themes of passion, intimacy and playfulness. With an exciting collection of contemporary choreography that’s as “sensual” (Washington Post) as it is “humorous, elegant and wild” (Seattle Dances), Stewart/Owen Dance crafts intricate movements that offer a glimpse into the depths of the human spirit.

This season, the award-winning company brings a new and exciting collection of contemporary choreography to its home venue. Working with writers, musicians and storytellers, these cross-genre collaborators cultivate the craft of storytelling through movement — even choreographing music videos for Moses Sumney, Sylvan Esso and Ben Phantom.

Co-founded by husband-and-wife duo Gavin Stewart and Vanessa Owen, Stewart/Owen Dance is dedicated to building a sustainable community for professional dance artists to set roots and share stories. Stewart and Owen’s choreography has been presented by festivals and companies across the U.S., and the founders’ careers have taken them across the globe on 15 U.S. State Department tours to teach, perform and choreograph contemporary dance with Washington, D.C.,-based Company E. In 2017, the duo made North Carolina their home base, bringing along and recruiting a full company of talented dancers to realize the couple’s innovative vision.

Last season, the Wortham Center commissioned Stewart/Owen Dance to create a new work with community collaboration, which premiered to overwhelming acclaim in April 2023. The company also leads ongoing community dance classes for adults at the Wortham and provides educational programming and performances for local schools, regional YMCAs and community organizations.

2023/2024 SEASON

ALEX CUBA

Friday, May 24, 2024 at 8 p.m. Diana Wortham Theatre

Grammy, Latin Grammy and Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Alex Cuba combines Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz, funk, rock and pop. Through his music, he takes apart complex cultural arrangements, mixes in soultinged hooks and catchy pop tempos, and keeps the soulful simplicity of Cuban music alive. He’s always exploring, always creating something fresh and new — and always, it seems, getting it just right.

Born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba, his musical journey began with a rich tapestry of Cuban influences and Latin rhythms. Today, he stands as a true global artist, seamlessly blending elements of Cuban soul, jazz, pop and folk with lyrics that resonate deeply with audiences around the world.

After relocating to Canada in the early 1990s, Alex’s music took on new dimensions, enriched by the multicultural influences of his adopted home. His bilingual songwriting reflects his ability to connect with listeners on a profound level, transcending language barriers — and his soulful voice, often described as velvety and warm, effortlessly draws listeners into his lyrical narratives. Alex’s insightful songs explore themes of love, family and social issues, showcasing his poetic storytelling and the depth of his musical artistry.

Since his debut, Alex has earned numerous accolades and awards — including Grammy, Latin Grammy and Juno awards — for his outstanding contributions to the music industry. His albums, including Agua del Pozo, Healer, and Lo Único Constante, have been met with critical acclaim and commercial success. His talent has also earned him collaborations with artists across genres, further solidifying his status as a versatile and sought-after musician.

With his signature blend of Cuban soul and global rhythms, Alex continues to push the boundaries of contemporary Latin music, crafting songs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable to connect with audiences through the power of music. From intimate venues to major music festivals, Alex’s infectious energy on stage draws audiences into his musical world with every note.

performing arts collective

A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to making theatre, building community, facilitating awareness, and changing the world, one play at a time.

Motivated by the belief that the arts are capable of bridging cultural and social gaps, we work to increase and sustain opportunities for diversity within the Western North Carolina performing arts community, and to present works that confront issues of social diversity in a provocative way. We believe the arts can be a catalyst for social change and personal transformation. As another meaningful way to make a difference in their community, Different Strokes! helps some of Western North Carolina’s non-profit agencies achieve their own goals and objectives by donating a portion of their ticket sales to the non-profit whose mission matches the theme of a given production. Different Strokes! Performing Arts Collective is currently Company in Residence at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. Please visit the Different Strokes! website and click on “Shows,” then “2023-2024 Season” for tickets and more information about upcoming productions.

LEGACY SOCIETY

ARTS FOR ALL KIDS

All children should experience the wonder of the performing arts. Unfortunately, many children in low-income situations grow up without access to the arts.

Your support directly impacts arts in education for more than 6,000 children each year by providing:

 Student Series performances

 Creative Arts Summer Camps

 Free Play Days

 In-school workshops

You can provide magical experiences for children in our community to participate in Arts for All Kids programming through the Wortham’s Youth Education Scholarship (Y.E.S.) Fund.

For more information, visit worthamarts.org/support.

2023/2024 ARTS FOR ALL KIDS SUPPORTERS

The generosity of the following donors made it possible for thousands of children, regardless of their economic status, to laugh at Student Series performances, explore at Creative Arts Summer Camps, learn from visiting artists in their classrooms and enjoy Free Play Days at Wortham. Thank you for supporting the Arts for All Kids program (Youth Education Scholarship Fund).

Accumulated donations listed below are from January 1, 2022 through August 1, 2023. Donations received after August 1, 2023 will be included in next year’s playbill.
