Workcamp description VOLUNTEERING The main activity in our organization is organizing and coordinating workcamps with volunteers from all over the world. Our workcamps are a place where people of all origins, ideologies and nationalities can live and work together for 10 days up to 2 weeks on a project hosted by a local community or by WF. We organize these camps in different places in Iceland. Our camps take place all year round. Each camp has its own individuality, different day activities and goals. As a short-term volunteer you participate in a project that you can choose from the list. Every project has its own theme, goals and day activities where you will participate with 6 to 25 other volunteers. They are a multicultural voluntary team led by a minimum of two work camp leaders.

On the move This camp takes place in the West and the North of Iceland, so the participants will get the opportunity to go around during the camp. In the beginning of the project, volunteers will receive an introduction about the tasks – afterwards we will choose a topic for the magazine. This is a great opportunity to get to know Reykjavik and the area around it in a different way. The group will take photos, create videos and conduct interviews with volunteers, local hosts and people living in the area. The outcome will be published in the UNA WF magazine.
Health & environment The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. Volunteers will help with growing tomatoes, cucumbers and making tea made of Icelandic herbs and also do some environmental work around the property.

One Earth – Our home, lets prevent global warming This camp has different kind of tasks. Some days we will focus on renovation, painting, cleaning and fixing things around and inside the house. We will also do some artwork for example paintings and sculptures made of driftwood. Other days we will clean the coastline and/or plant trees in the area. We will give a special focus on global warming and the volunteers will have workshops about climate changes. The issue of global warming is well known all over the world. The humanity must act in a more environmentally friendly way. The main goal of this project is to improve the environmental education and consciousness of the projects’ participants.
Taking care of nature Volunteers will 5 hours of environmental work during weekdays for example cleaning the coastline and rivers, planting trees and flowers, taking down old fences, removing lupines or other plants and fixing hiking paths. The work depends in the need of the local community. We also have the option to do a little bit of renovation in the house or taking care of the garden if needed.

内容 プロジェクトの始めに、参加者はキャンプの内容について 説明を受けて、マガジンのトピックを選びます。このキャ ンプはアイスランドの西部と北部で開催されているため、 キャンプ中参加者はたくさんの場所を訪れることができま す。これらの活動は参加者にとってアイスランドのことを 知るよい機会となります。参加者は写真や動画の撮影や、 地域の人にインタビューを行います。そして、UNA‐WFマガ ジンを発行します。
健康と環境 自然衛生協会には、森林、園芸、温室などの園芸環境部門が あり、参加者は多くの時間をそこで活動します。参加者は、 アイスランドでトマトやキュウリ、アイスランド原産のハー ブティー作りの手伝いや、環境や資源の保護活動をしていま す。

たった一つの地球-私たちの故郷 地球温暖化を止めよう このワークキャンプでは様々な種類の課題に取り組みます。家 の内外問わず、改修や塗装、清掃や修繕を行ったり、例えば流 木を用いて、何かを作ったりすることもあれば、海岸のゴミ拾 いや、その地域への植樹を行う日もあります。私たちは地球温 暖化に特に注目し、ボランティアでは気候変動についてのワー クショップも行います。昨今、地球温暖化の問題は世界中で知 られています。私たち人類はより環境に配慮した行動をしなけ ればなりません。このプロジェクトの主なゴールは環境教育と 参加者の意識の向上にあります。
自然を思いやる ボランティアでは平日にそれぞれ五時間の環境に関するさまざ まな活動を行います。（活動例：海岸や川の清掃や植樹、植 栽。古くなったフェンスの取り壊し、ルピナスやそのほかの雑 草などの除草、歩道の修復など） 私たちの活動は地元のコミュニティのニーズによって支えられ ています。また、必要に応じてある程度の屋内の修復や、ガー デニングをすることも可能です。

Photography & journalism project
For the photography and journalism project, we chose a topic for the magazine that is related to global climate change. As a group, we chose to make our feature about how different Icelandic people have witnessed the impact of climate change in their everyday lives and how they are taking action against it. We went to two nearby towns and talked to people on the streets and those working in businesses to hear what their views were about this issue. In this project, we have lots of opportunities to take photos, including excursions to some locations with amazing scenery. We also do photographic and artistic workshops, often related to the theme of climate change. Most importantly, we spend a lot of time together as a group, doing games and intercultural evenings where we get to learn more about each other’s countries and cultures.

私たちはこのプロジェクトで、気候変動についての 記事を作成することになりました。変わりゆくアイ スランドの気候で日々の生活で何か気候変動の影響 を受けているかというものとそれに対して何か行動 を起こしたり、努力したりしていることについて注 目しました。私たちは活動拠点の近くの二つの村に 行き、道行く人やそこの町で働く人に気候変動につ いてインタビューを行いました。また、このプロ ジェクトでは写真撮影や素晴らしい景色を見る機会 が多くありました。そして私たちは気候変動や地球 温暖化をテーマとした写真やアートのワークショッ プも行いました。また、このプロジェクトで最も重 要なポイントはグループとしてたくさんの時間を過 ごし、ゲームや文化交流によってお互いの国や文化 を知ることができたことです。

The story of global warming Woman from the village Interviewer: What is your experience with climate change?
Answer: We don’t experience so much personally. Everyone in the world or at least in Europe noticed that winters are changing quite a lot. Like in Iceland we still have winters but they are coming later and later. In many places in Europe there was no snow at all this winter. This is obvious and visible because there are so many things that we cannot see. So, clearly of course in Iceland, what people feel a lot is that glaciers are melting, which is really visible. Interviewer: What effort do you or people you know do about the climate changing? Answer: In Iceland there are really, really nice things people do. Everything that is connected with recycling like trash management. It is something that I think Icelanders are dealing very well with. But me and my partner are really trying to be conscious about climate change, so we try to do things. We noticed some stuff about other local people. There are, in every nation, some little things which annoy us when it`s connected to climate change. For example, often islanders don`t switch off engines when they come to a shop. I personally try not to use the car as much as this is possible. Instead, I walk around a lot, even if it is a bit difficult sometimes when you`re not living in a big city.

Answer: The winter is way difficult, more flexible, like sometimes we have ８℃ and then we have -10℃ used to be just completely winter for 34months. Interviewer: Have you ever seen the community here asking any efforts to fight climate change? Answer: I think we were the first in Iceland to separating our trash and do that, we ar trying use to commuter services, like there is a bus that goes around town and over to the smaller town here. And yeah, everybody`s trying their best but we could probably do way more. Small Step Interviewer: How has climate change impacted Iceland? Answer: The glaciers, I see the glaciers. They are melting. Interviewer: At what point in your life did you start to see the impact of climate change around here? Answer: I think 3,4,5 years ago? I saw something was not right, everything was not okay. Interviewer: Why do you think so?
Answer: The weather has changed. 3 years ago there was glacier that was gone, 3,4 years ago it was melting until there was just a little ice left. Interviewer: Have you taken efforts against or has your community done things to fight climate change? Answer: In my home, we separate everything when we throw out the garbage, so perhaps, yeah, I think we are doing something good when we do that. I’m a guide, so when I’m hiking in the mountains in the summer, I always try to take garbage when I see it. I walk almost every day. I “rest” the car when I go to work. Interviewer: When you are guiding to the tourists do you have anything special to say? Answer: I always tell tourists to take garbage with them and not use too many plastic bags, try to use the same for your lunch or a sandwich and not always be changing them every day. 17
