J’ai été vraiment bluffé par la façon dont s’est déroulé le Worldwide l’année dernière. Ça représentait tellement pour moi de le voir évoluer si favorablement. Comme vous le savez peut-être, je suis DJ depuis de nombreuses années maintenant, ça a commencé sur des radios pirates et dans les clubs du South London dans les années 80 jusqu’aux plus grands festivals à travers le monde aujourd’hui… Mais si je rêvais d’une chose tout particulièrement, c’était de créer un espace où nous pourrions partager la vision de la musique que j’essaie de transmettre à travers mes émissions de radio… un festival dans lequel Mala peut jouer aux côtés de Pascal Comelade et d’Alex Barck de Jazzanova… un festival qui aurait ses racines dans la culture club mais qui y mêlerait des live magnifiques, dans lequel toute l’Europe peut se reconnaître… vous voyez ce que je veux dire ! J’ai ressenti cela pour la première fois au festival de jazz de Montreux quand j’avais 14 ans - ça a été une révélation. Regarder Andy Narrell et ses percussions en métal, entouré par des mélomanes du monde entier, c’était bien avant de découvrir le monde underground des clubs ou les évènements tels que les Caister soul weekenders. Étant originaire du nord de la France, j’ai toujours voulu créer quelque chose dans mon pays de naissance ! J’ai la chance de faire partie de l’équipe de Radio Nova depuis des années maintenant et j’ai senti qu’il était temps de lancer mon propre festival avec mes frères du Sud. J’ai rencontré le crew Freshly Cut à plusieurs reprises dans les 90’s quand je jouais pour eux à Montpellier, et c’est après une de ces soirées que nous avons évoqué l’idée de «peut-être» lancer ce dont nous fêtons aujourd’hui la cinquième édition…

I was so overwhelmed by the worldwide last year it meant a lot to me seeing the party

growing in such a positive way. As you may know I’ve been doing this for many years now, from spinning on pirate stations and south london clubs in the eighties to playing most devils music emporiums around the world since… The one thing I always dreamt of was to create a place we could all meet and share the sort of vision I send out on my radio shows… a festival where Mala can stand strong alongside Pascal Comelade and Alex Barck from Jazzanova… a festival with roots in club culture but mixed with terrific live music and a cross cultural European feel… if you know what I mean! I’d first experienced live music in such a context at the Montreux Jazz Festival when I was around 14 years old - it was a revelation to me - watching Andy Narrell and his steel drums surrounded by music lovers from all around the world - this was before I’d discovered the clubland underground and events in the UK like the Caister soul weekenders. Being from northern France myself I’ve always wanted to do something in the country of my birth! I’ve been lucky enough to be part of the Radio Nova team for many years now and so it was about time I got it together to run a festival with my brothers from the South. I’d met the Freshly Cut crew many times

in the nineties when I used to play for them in Montpellier, and it was after one of those allnighters that we began talking about ‘maybe’ doing what has now become the 5th edition…

J’ai la sensation que nous avons notre meilleur line up cette année… de Gil Scott-Heron à Josh Wink en passant par Floating Points et l’Orchestre Poly Rythmo… c’est incroyable ! Et nous avons ces trois lieux fantastiques… la plage ACD, le Théâtre et le St-Christ… avec des bus pour aller de l’un à l’autre… on fait vraiment des progrès !

I feel we have our best line up to date… from Gil Scott Heron to Josh Wink via Floating Points and Orchestre Poly Rythmo… its incredible this year! And we have 3 amazing sites… from the Beach to the Theatre to the Base Nautique… with buses to get you from one place to the other too… we really are making progress!

J’ai vécu une année exceptionnelle depuis le festival… mon label Brownswood continue de sortir des disques à une époque où ce n’est peut-être plus très raisonnable de le faire encore ! Le nouveau Half Seas Over, un projet dont je suis particulièrement fier venant d’Elan Mehler qui est à mes côtés depuis le début - son mélange de folk/jazz/americana avec Adam Mcbride m’excite comme je ne l’ai pas été depuis que j’ai entendu «The Dreamer» par José James, et j’espère sincèrement que vous viendrez les voir jouer au CRAC le jeudi après-midi !

Mes émissions radio ont été exaltantes cette année… les back to back avec Erykah Badu et Thom Yorke se sont merveilleusement bien passés et l’apport constant de musique de qualité m’a permis de continuer à m’éclater, merci bien ! À l’heure où j’écris ces lignes, j’écoute particulièrement les albums de Scuba, Flying Lotus et the Simonsound… Ces disques sont magnifiques et m’ont accompagné à New York, Tokyo, en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande ces derniers mois…

I’ve had an amazing year since the last time we were here… my label Brownswood still keeps on releasing records at a time when it may not be so prudent.!… the new Half Seas Over is a project that I’m particularly proud of, seeing that its coming from Elan Mehler who’s been with me since the beginning - his folk/jazz/americana fusion with Adam Mcbride Smith is the most excited I’ve been since I heard ‘The Dreamer’

My radio shows have felt uplifted this year… the back to backs with Erykah Badu and Thom Yorke went down really well and the constant supply of great music has kept everything buzzing very nicely thank you… so far as I write this I’m particularly buzzed up by albums from Scuba, FlyLo and the Simonsound… some amazing stuff out there that I’ve tested out on trips to New York, Tokyo, Australia and `New Zealand these last few months…

J’espère que vous appréciez notre programme cette année… moi j’en suis ravi… on veut rester un festival indépendant pour les gens qui aiment faire la fête de la meilleure des façons… faites-nous confiance… et au fait… ne partez pas trop vite le dimanche… je jouerai en back to back avec Norman Jay après la finale de la coupe du monde… on peut pas rêver mieux !

Beatspoke Depuis 2008, le Talent Search fait office de tremplin, donnant l’occasion à de nouveaux producteurs de partager le plateau du WF avec leurs mentors... Retour sur la révélation 2009 avec Josh & Sarah de Beatspoke.

Since 2008, our Talent Search has served as a genuine springboard for upcoming artists and new producers given the unique chance to play at WF alongside their favorite musicians and mentors.... Flashback on last year’s winners Beatspoke.

Salut Beatspoke ! Comment s’est fait le déclic entre vous ? Comment vous êtes vous mis à faire de la musique ensemble et surtout à partir de quel moment vous êtes vous dit que ça valait le coup de pousser plus loin ?

(JOSH) - Il y a à peu près 8 ans, juste aprés la ré-élection de George Bush, Sarah a émigré à Barcelone pour s’échapper d’une amérique trop conservatrice et se concentrer sur la musique, et c’est là qu’elle est tombé sur moi Josh ...

(SARAH) - Au début, on se retrouvait au studio de Josh, passant des heures a écouter de la zique, à checker ses derniers ‘beats’, je posais des voix sur un track comme ça sans rien de vraiment travaillé, juste un hobby. Un de nos potes qui avait écouté quelques unes de nos chansons nous a persuadé de faire passer notre démo a un festival ici a Barcelone - à partir de là on a commencé à avoir des gigs ça et là et on s’est lancé a fond dans ‘’BeatSpoke’’.

How did your collaboration together come about and when did you realize that you had created a project that was worthwhile to continue ?

(JOSH) - Sarah came to Barcelona about 8 years ago to get away from corporate America, Bush´s new mandate, and focus on music and in that process met Josh.

(SARAH) - We would hang out in Josh´s studio quite a lot listening to new beats he was making and play around a bit music/hobby style. A friend of ours who heard some of what we´d produced asked us to submit a demo to a festival here in Barcelona and we accepted. From then on different people from our circle of friends would call us up and offer us gigs here and there but it would take about two years before we really became ‘’Beatspoke’’.

Où situez-vous vos influences musicales actuelles ou passées ?

(S) - Mes parents sont des mélomanes, j’ai démarré le chant très tôt, pris des cours de chant classique à l’école et à 16 ans j’ai découvert le jazz puis la soul et enfin le hip-hop..

Ella Fitzgerald et Nina Simone sont les deux grosses influences qui m’ont suivie toute mon enfance, puis plus tard Lauryn Hill, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu et plus récemment D’Angelo, Alice Russell, Joe Dukie (Fat Freddy’s Drop), Leela James... Josh et moi on se retrouve sur Portishead, Massive Attack, Krush, J Dilla...

(J) - On est super fan des Fat Freddy´s Drop, D´Angelo, Steve Spacek, Dwele, Samon Kawamura, Harmonic 313, Foreign Beggars,.. la liste est sans fin. Dernièrement les albums de José James et des Electric Wire Hustle nous ont vraiment bluffés - mais attention on kiffe aussi le bon Ragga bien Rude Boy et le gros Dubstep qui crache...

Blancasse : Très pâle, avec une connotation maladive.

Talent search Quand on est tous les deux à la cool on écoute surtout des vieux trucs reggae roots, mais aussi les classiques comme Sam Cooke, Nat King Cole, Bill Withers, Curtis, Marvin, Stevie, pas mal de Jazz et de Soul.

What to you consider to be your influences past or present ?

(S) - Both my parents are quite musical and I started singing from a young age, I studied classical voice in school and at about 16 I discovered Jazz, and later

Comment vous êtes vous retrouvés sur le Talent Search l’année dernière ?

(J) - On venait de finir “No Rush” notre tout premier album, on cherchait des plans pour jouer et faire la promo du CD et l’un de nos amis, qui vient au Worldwide Festival de Sète tous les ans, nous a suggéré de nous inscrire au Talent Search. On l’a fait, honnêtement surtout pour lui faire plaisir, on espérait vraiment rien. c’était comme acheter un ticket de loto. Quand on a su qu’on avait gagné, on a d’abord été sous le choc ! Surtout que l’année dernière il y avait vraiment des méchants artistes, du coup c’était encore plus gratifiant et excitant.

How is it you came to sign up for the WWF ?

(J) - We were in the process of getting in touch with all of our friends and fam in the music biz for good contacts to get gigs to support the release of our debut album ¨No Rush¨ and a good friend of ours who happens to go to WWF every year suggested we sign up for the New Talent Seach. We did it, in part to humor him, but never really expected anything to come of it, kind of like buying a random lottery ticket on a whim. And in the end we were really shocked to find out we´d won. A lot of really interesting and talented artists were in the runnings so we were very honored and excited all around.

Alors aprés la victoire comment s’est déroulé votre performance et le festival ? Y a t’il eu un impact sur votre carrière musicale ?

Avant tout je pense que ça nous a donné confiance en notre projet et notre musique - au début on n’y croyait pas !

(S) - Perso, j’était un peu stressée de participer à cette édition du WF, surtout avec une telle affiche !! Et puis je pensais vraiment qu’il y aurait tout juste une dizaine de personnes pas plus qu’on passerait un peu inaperçu - j’imaginais pas qu’on serait accueillis à bras ouverts par tout le

monde et que le public kifferait autant, on avait l’impression de faire partie d’un truc spécial. Sans être trop démago, ce festival est mon festival préféré, et pas seulement pour les artistes qui y jouent et les différents lieux, mais surtout pour l’esprit des festivaliers, la vibe et l’énergie.

L’ambiance était bien relax, sincère et on tout le monde était à fond dans le son, pas seulement là pour faire la fête.

(J) - Depuis qu’on a gagné le talent search, on a senti que plus de clubs et d’organisateurs de soirées étaient prêts à nous faire confiance, alors que nous restons encore trés peu connu. ça nous a vraiment aidé à jouer plus et à nous permettre d’élargir notre réseau...

How was winning the festival and participating in it ? Has it had an effect on your musical career ?

It really gave us a big push of confidence, we couldn´t believe it to be honest.

(S) - I was a bit nervous going to the WWF with such a slammin´ roster, I thought maybe we´d do our gig for a dozen people and then we´d be quitely ignored.

That could not have been further from the truth, we were welcomed with open arms by everyone, it really made us feel a part of everything...

The festival, without being biased, was one of the best festivals we´ve ever been to, not only for the different stages or the list of artists on the roster but for the people who attended, the vibe and energy.

It was all so laid back and sincere and people were really into the music, not just partying but really listening and enjoying.

(J) - Since we won the WWF Talent search more clubs and organizers have been willing to take the risk of booking us, a relatively unknown act. In that respect it´s really been helpful in order to be able to play out more often and get to know more people doing cool stuff in the biz.

Qu’est ce qu’il se prépare pour Beatspoke en moment ? des projets en cours ?

Là on se concentre sur les gigs, en faire le plus possible pour faire circuler le nom de “Beatspoke”.

On a passé la première épreuve avec la sortie du premier album, là on travaille à fond le live, on apprend tous les jours de nouveaux “tricks”, on expérimente de nouvelles machines... On s’est doucement mis à bosser sur un nouvel album, travailler sur de nouvelles collaborations pour certains morceaux.

(S) - et j’ai fait des featurings en solo avec d’autres producteurs.

(J) - Oui, moi aussi j’ai deux trois autres projets dont l’un avec RQM de Berlin. Je vais produire avec le londonien Son Of Kick son nouveau EP qui sortira bientot au japon.

Dans un style plus hip-hop, je taffe avec El Chavo sur DebiloRithmicos sur lequel on invite différents MCs et chanteurs.

What are you working on at the moment with Beatspoke? Any other projects?

At the moment we´re really focused on continuing to get our name out there and doing shows. We´ve overcome the first big hurdle which was our debut album and now we are working on building a really solid live and learning new ways of doing things all the time. Always investigating new equipment…

We’re also working on a new album and getting colabs together for certain tracks.

Sarah: I also do colabs with other producers or groups from time to time...

Josh: I have a couple other projects as well, one with RQM from Berlin. I´ll be producing his new EP, along with Son of Kick from London, to be released in Japan in the near future. And the other with my mate El Chavo called Debilorithmicos which is more straight up Hip Hop with collaborations from different MCs and vocalists.

Qu’est ce que le futur réserve à BeatSpoke ?

A court terme, continuer à développer et améliorer notre son, et surtout le live - grandir et apprendre, se perfectionner. Là on se prépare à déménager notre studio, ce qui va peut être nous amener à produire et sonner différement …

Et à long terme sortir plein de nouveaux morceaux, produire un nouveau clip, un autre album et jouer partout ! Voyager, rencontrer de nouvelles personnes passionnées est tellement gratifiant et enrichissant, ça nous a vraiment redonné confiance en l’humanité. Nous sommes tous enfermés dans nos grandes villes, dans nos routines, dans le métro avec nos Iphone écoutant nos musiques et utilisant nos mobiles... pressés, anonymes, distants, limite antisociaux... du coup le seul fait de partager un repas avant un gig, une bière en backstage aprés le concert en ayant une discussion cool, c’est le top ! voire vital !

What are your short term and long term plans for the future?

Short term...just to continue to develop our music and style, especially live, to grow and learn about what we are doing while makeing sure that it´s

really what fulfills us. We´re also in the process of moving the studio which may contribute to a totally different sound for our next releases.

Long term... to release more tracks, make another music video, do another album and play out as much as possible. It´s really such a beautiful thing to travel to different countries, meet other passionate people and hear about what they´re up to and their take on things. In many ways it renews your faith in humanity. Many times we are stuck in big urban areas with our routines, on the subway pushing through crowds with head phones and playing with our mobiles texting etc., so distant and antisocial and in a rush. To come out of that and sit down to dinner with people before a show or have a beer backstage just chilling and speaking our minds, that´s dope. More than that, it´s priceless.

Brava, jouer au ping-pong, se faire des journées canapé avec nos laptops... On prend toujours bien soin de nos invités et on reçoit souvent des amis ici, c’est juste cool de passer du temps avec des gens nouveaux, partout où l’on va...

Quand Beatspoke ne fait pas de son comment occupez-vous votre temps libre ?

On taffe, On apprend à survivre, on sort avec nos familles et nos potes, au cinoche ou on mate des séries (surtout “The Wire & Breaking Bad ! “), on lit, on cuisine, on passe pas mal de temps à se balader dans les rues de Barcelone ou sur la Costa

When you´re not making music what are you up to ?

Working, surviving, hanging out with familly and friends, cinema & crazy HBO series (the wire & breaking bad), reading, cooking, playing the wii, going for walks, taking trips to the Costa Brava, sitting on the sofa engrosed in our laptops, playing ping pong and taking care of our guests. We always have people visiting us here in Barcelona and it´s cool just to spend time with people, anywhere we go really...

What is Talent search ?

Lancé en Mars 2008, le Talent Search associé au WF répondait au désir de faire surgir de la fange ces artistes incroyables que l’on rencontrait sur la toile ou qui nous envoyaient leurs productions. Ouvert a tous, solistes, groupes signés ou non, le Talent Search a pour but ultime de découvrir ce qu’il se fait de mieux dans la musique actuelle.

Respectant a la lettre le crédo de Gilles, et traduisant sa passion pour les musiques que l’on aime au WF que cela soit Folk, Samba, Soul, Jazz, Funk, Musiques Latines, Afro Beat, Electronica, Techno, House, Electro, Hip Hop, Dub, Reggae, Drum&Bass, Breaks, Neo Soul, Nu Jazz, Dubstep et tous les hybrides...

Depuis 2008, les Talent Search associés aux WF de Sète et de Singapour ont ainsi permis de découvrir Emily Chick (08), BeatSpoke (09) et SantaMonica (Asia 09). Grâce à sa première place, Santamonica se retrouvera rapidement signé sur JVC Victor Japan qui lui permettra de sortir l’album «Curious & Curiouser» la même année.

D’autres, comme fLako, qui s’est placé deuxième au Talent Search Europe l’année dernière, commencent a buzzer sévère... Norman Jay The godfather of Groove Inspirateur de carrière, Dj influent et respecté de tous, Norman Jay est considéré outremanche et par certains connaisseurs comme une véritable légende du clubbing : à l’âge de 8 ans il anime sa première soirée aux platines, adolescent il séjourne à New-York en pleine révolution disco et côtoie la crème des Djs, les futures légendes Larry Levan, Timmy Regisford puis un peu plus tard David Morales, Tony Humphries et Little Louie Vega. Influential & respected DJ, Norman Jay is considered by certain connoisseurs as a true clubbing legend. At the age of 8, he hosted his first party spinning soul and pop records, before spending time as a teenager in New York right in the middle of the disco revolution where he met the likes of Larry Levan, Timmy Regisford, David Morales, Tony Humphries & Little Louie Vega. When he came back to the UK in 88, Norman organised his first Warehouse party and his involvement in music hasn’t stopped ever since!

As founder of KISS FM - the first English pirate radio - each year at the end of August, Norman and his brother Joey get thousands of people dancing to the sounds of their massive GOOD TIMES SOUND SYSTEM during London’s Notting Hill Carnival. In 2002, Norman Jay was officially cited in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Birthday Honors List with the recommendation that he be appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire, an MBE no less, awarded on merit for «deejaying and services to music», a lifetime’s achievement for some but not for Norman who still plays a lot. WF- Juste après le début de ton set de l’année dernière au Worldwide à Sète, il s’est mis à pleuvoir vraiment fort comment as-tu géré ? Quel souvenir en gardes-tu ? Est-ce que cette pluie a eu une influence sur ce que tu as joué ce soir-là ?

DORIAN CONCEPT - Ça m’a vraiment surpris, c’est pas le genre de truc auquel tu t’attends quand tu joues en extérieur surtout avec tout mon équipement… et dans le sud de la France en plus. Un peu comme un membre de ta famille qui débarque toujours à l’improviste, ou comme « un raisin dans une tarte aux pommes » (traduction libre). Quand ça s’est mis à tomber, j’ai eu vraiment peur : mon laptop à commencé à cracher des étincelles et je sentais les claviers me lâcher… Franck du Team Worldwide m’a tout de suite encouragé à continuer quand même, il a chopé un superbe parapluie rose dans le public, Lefto et Simbad ont attrapé des bâches – et ainsi abrité j’ai pu continuer à jouer – je voyais tout ces gens devenir dingues c’était mortel !

C’est marrant car cet épisode est resté un des meilleurs souvenirs de pas mal de festivaliers !

Oui, en fait le truc c’est que les choses qui n’ont pas seulement un impact sur ton esprit mais ont aussi des répercussions physiques, sont celles qui te marquent le plus et dont tu te souviendra.

Le coup de poing de la brute du collège, le premier baiser ou cette pluie soudaine a Sète ! C’est le genre de truc qui te reste, dont tu te souviens !

Last year you played at GP’s Worldwide Festival in Sete and 20mns after the start of your set it started to rain really hard. How do you recall that episode ? Is it a good memory or was it hell ? Did the rain actually influenced your set ?

The rain was surely a surprise, because it’s not something you’re prepared for when playing outside with a bunch of electronic equipment. It’s like that family member that never announces his visits, or like raisins in a pastry. So once it hit, I was firstly scared because I saw my laptop just shooting sparks and all my stuff basically die-ing. But gladly Franck from WF told me to keep going and Lefto and Simbad just gift-wrapped me into plastic blankets, and a guy from the audience lent me a pink umbrella so I could continue my set and see everyone freaking out.

Funny how that episode turned out to be the musical highlight for several peeps attending the fest.

Yeah basically the things that don’t just influence or reach your mind but also your body are the ones you remember the most. Like a punch from a bully, a kiss from your first love or the rain drops in Sete. These things stay with you.

En 2009 tu as sorti ton premier CD « When Planets Explode », on l’a écouté une bonne centaine de millions de fois au bureau, comme ceux de Martyn, Bullion ou Hudson Mohawke et Flying Lotus – même si vous ne produisez pas la même musique, on sent une filiation – Est-ce que tu as l’impression de faire partie d’une famille de musiciens / producteurs ?

Eh bien, en tout cas c’est une très grande famille, parce que c’est clair qu’on

est tous amenés à se rencontrer un jour ou l’autre même si nos productions sont assez différentes et similaires en même temps – on a tous des backgrounds différents – peut-être que le père d’untel a une collection de vinyles différente du mien, ou sa mère avait une coupe de cheveux différente. Mais tous ces musiciens et artistes ont en commun cette envie de partager ces musiques qu’ils ont adorées. D’un autre côté chacun fait ce qu’il lui chante dans son coin.

Dans une interview, tu disais te considérer comme un pur ‘bedroom producer’– maintenant que tu bosses et joues avec d’autres musiciens est-ce que cette définition s’applique toujours ?

Déjà, tout mon matos son se trouve toujours dans ma chambre – donc oui je bosse et je dors dans le même endroit. C’est super pratique de pouvoir bosser comme ça et de ne pas avoir à sortir de chez moi, un paquet de clopes, 4 verres d’eau et je peux passer la journée à m’amuser sur une progression d’accords. En plus étant très casanier, je risque de continuer comme ça un moment encore !

2009 saw the release of your « When Planets Explode » CD – we’ve been listening to it a couple pf 100 times at the WF office : We’ve been talking about this new batch of music makers we love from Martyn to Hud Mo and Flying Lotus – Do you consider yourself as part of a family of musicians / artists ?

It’s seems like an extended family, because all the people end up knowing each other even though they’re into quite different but similar music, or have a different background – or their dad had a different vinyl-collection or mother a different haircut. The nice thing is that all the people seemingly share their love for music they’ve learned to love, and on the other hand no one really gives a fuzzniss about what they self or anyone else does.

In one of your interview you were saying that you considered yourself as a pure Bedroom Producer – now that you started working / playing alongside other artists does that definition still apply ?

I still have all my stuff in my bedroom, so location-

wise I still share my work and sleeping place. It’s just practical when you know you don’t have to leave the building, when you can spend a whole day with cigarettes and 4 glasses of water just messing around with a chord-progression. I’m quite slow to change also, so I think I’ll stay with that for a while still.

On t’a vu partager l’affiche avec le Crew Brainfeeder – As-tu été adopté par cette nouvelle famille de L.A. ?

Bien, adopté n’est pas vraiment le bon mot, j’imagine qu’on est comme une sorte de groupe de gars chelous qui se baladent dans la rue, on fonderait ce gang et on porterait de gros blousons de cuir avec des serpents dessinés dessus et moi j’en ferais partie mais je serais un peu à l’écart ; j’aurais un perroquet sur l’épaule et je gueulerais de longue des trucs comme « hey, faut que je tape sur ce piano, nom de dieu! » You have been sharing the stage with the Brainfeeder crew a lot ! Have you been adopted by a new family?

Oh I think adopted is the wrong word, I think it’s more like us all being these weird dudes that hang around in the street and we start this gang with snake symbols on black leather jackets and I’m more like that guy with the parrot on his shoulder who always yells : “ Its time to play dem keys, darnit, ach ! ” On a maté une vidéo d’un concert où tu joues avec les JSBL, le son est mortel ! – Tu joues souvent avec eux ? Comment réagissent les jazzeux à cette fusion de jazz et d’électronique ?

On s’est remis à pas mal jouer ces derniers temps, mais c’est pas évident à mettre en place, JSBL (‘Jacob’s Salty & Bamboozling Ladder’, groupe de jazz rock funk viennois – ndlr) c’est la rencontre de plusieurs individualités donc pas facile à organiser les repets etc, mais on va s’y mettre cet été, faire plus de gigs, et même aller en studio et tout le ramdam. Certains musiciens de jazz sont super excités par ce que l’on fait sur scène, surtout parce que la plupart ont reçu une formation « classique » et ce qu’ils voient et entendent en live ne ressemble en rien aux autres bands qui sonnent plus « académiques », les autres nous

voient juste comme des mecs bizarres qui jouent une musique bizarre.

Qu’est-ce que tu préfères alors ? Jouer live ou bien composer chez toi ?

Ce que je kiffe par-dessus tout c’est jouer live chez moi !

We recently watched a video of a live gig you did with JSBL - Have you been playing with them a lot lately ? The live band sounds is incredible. How are Jazz musicians reacting to your performance ?

We’re doing more gigs again, but were also a bunch of individuals that are disorganised and hard to assemble, but we’re definitely going to do more shows, recordings and bullsneez in the summer. I think some jazz-musicians react to the shows with a lot of excitement, because some of us just aren’t classically trained so we end up sounding different to a lot of other more academic bands and musicians, but others just think were weird.

What’s most enjoyable playing live or producing at home ?

I love playing at home the most.

Et sinon Oliver qu’est-ce que tu nous prépares ?

Un nouvel album ? Des collaborations ?

Rien de super spécial pour l’instant, cet été je me concentre sur JSBL, les gros projets viendront plus tard. On verra. Sinon je serais a Sète encore cette année, pour checker tout le monde, faire la fête et jouer sur mes claviers comme un boxeur pro !!!

Depuis quelques années, Martyn fait partie de ces producteurs de musiques électroniques actuelles que l’on suit avec un intéret grandissant ! Aprés un album incroyable clashant Dubstep, Detroit techno et electronica barrée, un audacieux mix pour la célèbre compilation ‘Fabric’, et comme tout ceux qui l’ont vu jouer, on attend avec impatience ce que Martyn nous prépare ....

For the last two or three years, Martyn has been one of the main producers on today’s electronic music scene who we’ve been following with growing interest! After releasing an incredible album clashing Dubstep, Detroit techno and spacy electronica and a surprising mix for Fabric, like anyone who’s seen him play, we are eagerly looking forward to what Martyn has in store for us next....

WF - Martyn, tu es né et tu as vécu en Hollande mais tu as récemment immigré aux States, qu’est ce qui a motivé ton départ d’Europe ?

Martyn - Oui je suis né à coté d’Eindhoven, dans le sud de la Hollande, j’ai ensuite vécu à Rotterdam et je me suis installé à Washington DC assez récemment. Ma femme est originaire de la région et j’adore vraiment le style de vie d’ici, le quartier est calme et sympa, ça nous semblait naturel de se poser ici.

Quels disques ou artistes dans la collection de tes parents continuent d’avoir de l’influence sur tes productions ?

Je dirais Talking Heads, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Roxy Music, Miles Davis,..

Hi Martyn ! You were born and lived in Holland but recently moved to Washington DC (USA)...

What motivated this move ?

Yes I was born near Eindhoven, in the south of Holland, then lived in Rotterdam for a while before moving to Washington DC. My (now) wife is from here, I like the area, it’s very nice and quiet and so we decided to live here.

What records / artists in yer parents collections does still have influences on your music ?

Je n’ai pas réellement d’affinités avec toute la scène, mais j’ai quand même beaucoup d’amis qui produisent et qui mixent de la D&B; ce qui me pousse a suivre ce que eux font... des gars comme DBridge, Instra:mental, Calibre et bien sur Flight et Marcus Intalex...

What’s hot on the D’n’B tip at the moment ?

I think its all about Exit Records and NonPlus at the moment! I am Still a Soul:R fan !

Y’a des trucs qui t’ont vraiment excité en drum&bass récemment ?

Eh bien, ya beaucoup de buzz autour des labels EXIT rec et NonPlus en ce moment ! Sinon Soul:R je kiffe toujours !

Ton set juste avant Carl Craig au St Christ l’année dernière m’a marqué comme étant trés versatile, et en même temps trés «Martynesque», à la mesure de tes productions - trés deep et trés dancefloor en même temps - question classique mais tu te considéres avant tout comme un dj ou plutôt un producteur ?

Yes... Écoutes, j’ai commencé a mixer bien avant que je songe même a produire du son. Je me sens toujours super à l’aise derrière des platines, dans un bon club avec un public enthousiaste et ouvert a tout. Pour moi, mixer la meilleure façon de communiquer et de partager mon amour de la musique !

I see that that yer first tracks were released on D’nB labels - Marcus INtalex’s SOUL:R and Dj Flight’s PLAY. While I was Goin through your MySpace page, I was surprised to see that you re still showing lots of love towards the D’n’N scene. Is D’n’B still important to you?

It’s not necessarily the whole genre that’s important to me, but obviously I have a lot of friends who make drum n bass and DJ it so I do keep track of what they’re doing specifically. People such as dBridge, Instra:mental, dj Flight, Marcus Intalex, Calibre etc.

Tu as fait quelques méchants remixes, et particulièrement tes versions de «Broken» de TRG et le «Acid Bells» de Efdemin, comment ça s’est passé ? Acceptes-tu à chaque fois ou bien faut-il que tu kiffes le morceau en premier lieu ?

Il faut que j’apprécie le morceau bien sûr sinon je ne vois pas comment je pourrais en faire une bonne version, quelque chose du morceau original doit m’accrocher l’oreille et m’inspirer des idées de remixes. Il arrive qu’on me commande un remix, mais d’autres fois j’aime tellement un

morceau que je contacte le label, voire l’artiste directement pour le leur proposer. À l’inverse «Elden St» a été remixé par Sebo K, quels artistes tu reverait de voir remixer un de tes tracks ?

Eh bien à part Sebo K, On a déja sorti deux maxis avec des remixes de mes morceaux sur 3024, avec certains de mes artistes favoris comme Redshape, Ben Klock, Illum Sphere et bien sûr Zomby. Le plus important est que l’artiste impregne sa patte dans le mix, ses tripes, au lieu de juste s’amuser avec les samples du morceau qu’on lui a filé...

Your set at WF09 was very versatile, but still very Martyn like your productions really - a deep dancefloor experience. What came first for you production or Djing ?

Oh I was a DJ long before I even thought about making music. I still feel at home behind the decks in a nice club with enthusiastic people who are ready for anything. To me it’s a very direct way of communicating and sharing love for music.

You did some great remixing job my personal faves are yer rendition of «Broken» by TRG, and that «Efdemin» remix of «Acid Bells», How did this come about ? Do you always agree on a remix or do you have to like the tune in the first place ?

I have to like the tune, otherwise it’ll be impossible to do a good remix. Something in the original track must appeal to me and spark an idea. In some cases I get asked to do a remix but in some instances I actually like the original track so much that I approach the artist or label to remix it myself..

«Elden St» has been recently remixed by Sebo K, what artists would like or dream to see remixing one of your tunes ?

Apart from Sebo K ? Well we released two remix 12»es on 3024 in January, those contained some of my favourite artists like Redshape, Ben Klock, Illum Sphere, Roska and of course Zomby.. I think what’s important with remixes is that the artist needs to bring his style into the mix, instead of just doing something simple with the samples that he’s been given.

Musicalement tes productions sont difficiles a classifier, or on te case souvent dans le bac « dubstep »... Penses tu vraiment que ce soit la meilleure description de ce que tu fais ?

Je ne pense pas ma musique en terme de style ou d’étiquette, je sais qu’elles ont été mes influences mais ma musique est avant tout très personelle. Je me vois mal mettre toute mon savoir faire et mon âme dans la production d’une chanson et la placer bien sagement dans la case dubstep ou techno jazz ou n’importe quoi J’ai lu que tu restais très influencé « par les bons moments de la vie mais plus encore par les moments de déprime » Je pense que comme la plupart des artistes,, quand on est « down » on est souvent seul, isolé et dans un environement silencieux et calme, en tout cas pour moi ça fonctionne comme ça, c’est les meilleures conditions pour se mettre à composer. Attention ça veut pas dire que je refuse d’être heureux, mais c’est quand ça va mal que je ressens cette envie urgente de faire du son. Quelquefois même, c’est en produisant que je sens aller mieux, tu vois ce que je veux dire ? Ça tient de la thérapie quoi !

C’est cette état de mélancolie qui m’a poussé vers la musique. La plupart des musiques ou artistes que j’écoute et qui m’inspirent sont très mélancolique – prends la techno de Detroit – c’est dur mais empreint de tristesse – cette combinaison de nappes synthétiques sur des beats puissants – ça donne un coté mélancolique, un peu triste. Si tu écoutes les productions D&B du milieu des 90’, les sorties Metalheadz en particulier, tu retrouves cet alliage : c’est mélodique mais avec un coté bien « tough ». Toutes ces musiques sont très urbaines – c’est une musique de citadins – il y a toujours ce coté doux-amer et c’est ce que j’éssaie de recréer avec Ma musique aussi.

Prends « Broken » tu y retrouves cette grosse bassline, un gros pied bien en avant, mais derrière tu retrouves des parties synthé très oniriques, comme flottantes et aériennes, et tout un tas de bruits de fond... qui font de ce morceau quelquechose de vivant !

Maintenant que les disques ne se vendent plus, classifier les différents style de musique apparaît moins important pour la ‘Génération blog’ ? qu’en penses tu ? Tu penses encore pouvoir

vivre de ta musique dans 10 ans ?

Laisses moi juste corriger ta question « maintenant que les disques mauvais ou médiocres ne se vendent plus » Je pense vraiment que les bons disques vont continuer a se vendre – je suis persuadé que si tu mets toutes tes tripes, ton enthousiasme et ta passion dans ce que tu fais, que tu parviens à garder la qualité de ton travail à son top, tu dois pouvoir rester « dans la coup ». Il existe une multitude de façons de jouer et de produire de la musique, on verra bien ce que le futur nous réserve mais je suis confiant.

On your MySpace it says you’re very influenced by your «life’s ups but very much the downs». Tracks like ‘Broken and ‘Storm Watch’ are pretty melancholy tunes, so what do you mean by that?

I think most artists, but especially me, are always more inspired to make music in down periods than when everything is going nice and quiet. I do like the ups, obviously, but it’s especially when things are going down that you have the urge to make music. There always needs to be something bothering you to provide ideas of how to make things better. And sometimes you’re in a certain situation where you cannot make things better literally, so you start making music to make yourself feel better, you know what I mean? It’s like a therapy, sort of.

Melancholy is also what drew me into music.

In a lot of music that inspires me, melancholy is a really big emotion. If you listen to, say, old Detroit techno, it has these rainy, dreamy sort of strings in it but it also has a toughness about it.

The combination of toughness and mellowness makes it sound kind of melancholic. If you listen to older drum n bass, like mid-90s Metalheadz sort of things, that has the same energy. It’s got the melodic side but there is also a toughness to it.

A lot of that music—it’s city music really—it has a bit of a bittersweet vibe about it. I guess that’s just what I’m trying to do in my tunes as well. Like ‘Broken’ for instance, it has a pretty big bassline, and the beats are kind of upfront as well, but then there is a dreamy, washy sort of synth floating about as well, and obviously lots of extra noise that isn’t really music. But it’s those noises that give it sort of a lively vibe.

Your music is really difficult to classify you been tagged «Dubstep» do you think that the best etiquette to tag your music/ production?

- I don’t think of my music that way at all, I know what influences I have and use but my music is quite personal. It would be weird to first put my soul in a song and then throw it on a pile with 50 other producers’ tunes and classify it as dubstep/ techno/jazz/whatever..

Now that records don’t sell anymore, classifying music seems less important than it used to be for the «BLOG Generation» ? How do see you yourself living out of your music in 10 years time ?

Let me rephrase that : «BAD and MEDIOCRE records don’t sell anymore»! I think good records still sell if you put a lot of enthusiasm and love in your work and you keep the quality as high as possible, and you move along with the times. There are many ways to produce and perform music, so we will see where the future takes us.

Et en ce moment ? Sur ton MySPace on trouve des photos ou on te voit avec Ras G et les membres du crew BrainFeeder, Est ce que tu te sens appartenir à une famille de producteurs ?

Quand tu te retrouves en tournée ou sur la route, bloqué pendant des heures dans des espaces confinés dans des avions, des trains ou autres, des affinités apparaissent d’elles même avec certaines personnes. Kode9 et Flying Lotus, sont tous les deux en train de produire des choses incroyables (FlyLo avec Gonjasufi, et Kode9 avec HyperDub..) - c’est un bonheur de tourner avec eux – en plus de bien les connaître je sais qu’elle sauce ils vont apporter a la soirée. J’ai souvent joué avec eux sur des soirées BRAINFEEDER, et leur crew d’artistes est ce qu’il se fait de mieux en ce moment question beatmaking et production, ça reste très diversifié et super excitant ! Chaque event Brainfeeder est un événement, quelquechose de très spécial où je me donne toujours a 100% !!

What about today? Do you think you belong to a «Familly» of producer ? I found on yer MySpace a pic where you stand alongside artists like Ras G, ...

Brainfeeder crew ?

Especially on the road you find certain people you have a kinship with. I think Kode9 and Flying Lotus are both doing incredibly good music and I love touring with them, cos I know them well, and know what theyre bringing to the table musically. I’ve played on several Brainfeeder events and that collection of artists

developed from there into an illustrator/designer/ autonomic artist. We crossed paths again when I was doing drum ‘n bass events and needed someone to design our flyers and decor, this was somewhere in 2001 I believe, so we’ve been working together on projects ever since. Since we share a lot of the same background its easy to talk about what I’m trying to do with music and vice versa.. is very interesting and diverse and exciting. It’s always special to play at Brainfeeder events and I always give it my 100%! À part la musique, tu es fan de foot et de bédés (comics) maintenant que tu habites aux states, tu soutiens quelle équipe ?

Le PSV Eindhoven bien sûr ! Tu pensais me piéger ? Ah ah ah ! Franchement ou que tu ailles dans le monde tu soutiendras toujours ton équipe de coeur !

Comme toi je suis un gros fan de comics, pas vraiment le coté Marvel mais plutot du coté 2000AD, ou des trucs comme Mignola, Simon Bisley… En regardant les pochettes de tes maxis et sur ton website j’ai vu que tu collaboré avec l’artiste Erosie. Vous vous connaisez d’où?

Avec Erosie on se connait depuis toujours !! Même avant que je mixe ou fasse du son, lui était déjà reconnu comme un acteur majeur sur la scène grafitti, aujourd’hui c’est un des illustrateurs et designers les plus en vue. On s’est recroisés quand j’ai commencé a organiser des soirées drum&bass à Rotterdam et que j’avais besoin de quelqu’un pour faire mes flyers et même la déco des soirées, c’était en 2001 il me semble, et depuis on s’est plus lachés, on collabore sur plein de projets.

L’avantage avec Erosie c’est qu’on partage le même background. Du coup la communication

entre nous est super ‘easy’, il percute direct sur mes idées et moi sur les siennes.

Toujours coté comics, qu’est qu’on peut trouver sur ta table de chevet en ce moment ?

Eh bien comme tu sais je suis un gros fan du travail de Mignola (Hellboy entres autres) mais je suis pas vraiment un expert en la matière, c’est Erosie qui me conseille les bonnes lectures, sur ce qui pourrait m’accrocher graphiquement ! En ce moment je lis beaucoup de bouquins « normaux » des romans, mais une bédé qui m’a vraiment marqué c’est le « Maus » de Art Spiegelman, je l’ai perdue en déménageant et j’adorerais le relire.

Apart from music you seem to have two other «passions» : football & comics - So now that you live in the US what team d’you support ?

PSV Eindhoven ofcourse! Is that a trick question hahaha! Doesn’t matter where in the world you go, you will always support your home team!

I am a huuge fan of comics in general : not the Marvel school but more into the 2000AD (Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper), Corben and Mignola stuff …when I look at your vinyls sleeve I see you work with artist Erosie – how this collab came about ?

Erosie I have known since forever! Way back long before I was dj’ing or making music he was already a main player in Holland’s graffiti scene, and he

FlyLo élabore un hip-hop décalé, atmosphérique, toujours surprenant. Il amène la musique électronique vers de nouveaux horizons de créativité. On trouve dans ses morceaux des influences jazz, soul et même des touches de musique concrète.

Mais plus qu’un énième revival Trip-hop, FlyLo ne cherche pas a polir sa musique, qui garde toujours un aspect brut très “Lo Fi“.

Les Live sets de Flying Lotus sont décrits comme de véritables déflagrations sonores jubilatoires. Neveu de l’immense Alice Coltrane, on peut presque dire que cette fibre créatrice était inscrite dans son ADN. FlyLo participe à l’évolution naturelle du futur de la soul et du hip hop.

California-based laptop musician/producer, Flying Lotus (AKA Steven Ellison), has been described as «the Hendrix of his generation» and is, arguably, an incredibly big deal. FlyLo crafts slightly off-time beats with atmospheric, electronic sounds and a distinct hip-hop feel. He takes electronic music to new levels of creativity. You’ll hear deep influences from Jazz, Hip hop and Classic Soul wrapped up in a very raw, “lo-fi” envelope, with static noise, buzzin synth sounds and bleeps all along. Flying Lotus’ live sets are definitely some of the most challenging and rewarding live shows for any fan. Being nephew to the great Alice Cotrane, it’s no surprise that this man was born with a natural talent for music encoded into his DNA. And still on the comix tip what’s on yer bedroom table at the moment ?

Well I love Mignola’s work amongst others but I’m not a comic expert. Erosie points me in the right direction sometimes though! At the moment I’m reading lots of «normal» books but one book I used to own but lost during moving houses was Art Spiegelman’s «Maus». I would love to read that again.

Pour finir : qu’est qui va se passer en 2010 pour toi ?

Eh bien j’ai commencé à bosser sur un deuxième album, il sera très différent du premier, je voudrais qu’il sorte vers mai ou juin 2010 – et ça va être bien hardcore à tenir comme délai – ah et sinon je joue a Detroit le 29 mai !!!!!

What’s cooking for Martyn in 2010 ?

“I’ve actually already started working on album two, it’s going to be a very different album, that’s for sure, just because the timeline is going to be so different. I do really want to try to get it done as soon as possible; I really want it out in May 2010, which is a pretty hardcore deadline. Dominic Smith was one of the cornerstones of Roni Size’s Reprazent project. When on the mic, MC Dynamite spits out fire, and his hip-hop drops like a red house brick. Normal really, seeing as he’s from Gloucester, a town near Wales twinned with Metz.

Lefto Comme son nom l’indique, Lefto se couche tard. Forcément, quand on

joue avec le public comme un marionnettiste jusqu’au bout de la nuit...

Sans frontière, ni carcan. Reggae, dubstep, hip-hop, broken, funk, soul, deephouse, bossa... Lefto peut jouer à tous les postes, finger in the nose.

As his name may or may not suggest, Lefto goes to bed late, which is inevitable if you’re a DJ who’s got the crowd in the palm of their hand right through to the early hours. His style knows no bounds - Reggae, dubstep, hip-hop, broken beat, funk, soul, bossa - Lefto can play in all positions, making it all look so easy, and although he won’t be playing in South Africa this summer, he’s certainly got versatility by the bucketload!

Here’s a guy who got his name from a volcano located somewhere between the Mojave desert and California, with a cosmo-mythical signature which is both disturbing and haunting, and which will spread across Europe like a great big ash cloud, and a sound that could bring your cerebral circulation to a standstill in no time. Gonjasufi, he’s the new Eyjafjallajokull.

Hugo Mendez will be bringing a classy tropical touch to the ACD Beach this summer. As confident behind the decks as Paul Gascoigne in front of a Mojito, his latin mixes at the Tropical Soundclashes in London have become as famous as his «Tropical Discotheque» releases on his own label Sofrito.

This English DJ-producer-musician-compiler is currently based out in Colombia, in Cali, the town of mules - ‘Happiness is a warm gun’ indeed. Out here, Quantic is busy polishing up his superb vintage equipment, and just like Riquelme, he’s got the wrong century: «I’ve been collecting old machines and old microphones for a long time. The idea was not to do just funk or just Latin, but instead to make a kind of compilation of old compositions.» Well as they say, ‘The older the fiddle, the sweeter the tune’.

Although the motor industry in Detroit is going to the wall, its music scene is thriving: Kyle Hall is a worthy ambassador of the new house sound.

Extremely versatile, he can drop a very housey track, infused with techno, then attack with a more hip-hop beat and douse it with jazziness. A future great in the making.

Sète l’exception culturelle

Entourée d’eau, baignée d’une lumière exceptionnelle, sous son microclimat, Sète entretient depuis toujours des rapports privilégiés avec les artistes. Qu’ils soient peintres, cinéastes, photographes, musiciens ou écrivains, qu’ils soient issus du punk-rock ou de la Figuration libre, tous ont su y trouver l’inspiration, et loin d’appartenir au passé, ce foisonnement créatif est toujours d’actualité.

Et en plus ici c’est le sud: on a pas la grosse tête. Démonstration avec Maël.

Surrounded by water, immersed in an exceptional light and its microclimate, Sète always enjoyed privileged ties with artists.

Painters, moviemakers, photographs, musicians or writers: either from punk rock or free Figuration, they all found inspiration here. Far from belonging to the past, this creative abundance is always up to date. And furthermore, «c’est le sud!», we don’t take ourselves too seriously. Follow our guide Maël.

Je ne tenterai pas de vous faire un truc façon campagne de tourisme, histoire de vous vendre trois chambres d’hôtel, et qui sentirait le réchauffé, y a déjà la presse, la vraie, elle est faite pour ça, et elle le fait très bien.

Je vais aborder le propos autrement.

Bon, c’est pourtant vrai qu’on se sent bien ici, mais attention...

Vous n’êtes pas vraiment dans une station balnéaire du littoral méditerranéen.

Ici Sète.

En plus de la carte postale visuelle, les quais, les canaux, les bateaux, on sent tout de suite quelque chose de fort dans cette ville... Quelque chose en plus...

On aime ou on déteste mais en aucun cas on reste indifférent.

On naît ou on arrive ici, pour un week-end, un mois, ou un an puis on en reparle vingt ans après, avec les amis, en se disant qu’on a bien fait de rester...

Ici, on ne se prend pas trop au sérieux et rien que cet aspect de la vie constitue un luxe considérable.

Ici, les joutes verbales, sont toutes aussi fondatrices que les joutes languedociennes.

Ici, c’est un port, et la mer a toujours été porteuse de rêve, de mixité, d’évasion, de voyages..

Lorsqu’on s’abandonne à laisser traîner ses oreilles, on se nourrit, on rit, on rêve, on pleure, on voyage loin, on voyage sur place.

Et la ville étant petite, il est quasi impossible de se cloisonner..

Je m’explique.

Ici, tout le monde se fréquente, forcément, le mécano et le créateur, l’architecte et le pêcheur, le grand artiste et le commerçant, le paumé et le bureaucrate, les riches et les pauvres, les malins et les abrutis, les “m’as-tu vu” et les aristocrates, les voyous et les ménagères, les humains et les autres humains... plus abîmés.

Tout le monde se côtoie dans cette petite ville avec l’humilité et la Pink floyd : Chevelu, routard, d’apparence baba-cool..

Sète, creuset des arts Quelques 400 ateliers d’artistes, le Miam, le musée Paul-Valéry, l’espace Georges Brassens, le Crac, une école municipale des beaux-arts particulièrement dynamique, une galerie municipale, un festival d’artperformance, un autre de photographie, une quinzaine de galeries privées ou associatives, une multitude de restaurants qui accrochent tout ce qui s’expose… Les arts plastiques ont élu domicile à Sète. A ceci s’ajoutent un dynamisme littéraire exceptionnel, un festival de théâtre amateur, trois festivals musicaux en plus du WF, un festival de poésie, un théâtre de poche et une scène nationale qui propose tout au long de l’année une programmation variée.

Sète, the hub of Arts Some 400 artists’ studios; the Miam; the museum Paul Valery; the Georges Brassens space; the Crac (regional centre of contemporary art); a municipal school of dynamic fine arts; a municipal gallery; a performance-art festival and another for photography; fifteen private or associative galleries; even a multitude of restaurants that display all types of art...the visual arts have taken up residence in Sète. C’est sûrement une des raisons pour laquelle Sète, dans ce décor humain, attire depuis toujours des personnes préférant prendre la vie différemment, des personnes que les conventions ennuient, qui fuient les vies à crédits, les modèles imposés, des personnes qui regardent la vie avec un autre point de vue.

Des Valéry, des Brassens, des Di Rosa, des Combas, des Soulages, des Desnoyer, des Fournel, des Varda, des Dezeuze, et une multitude, d’autres noms célèbres ou en passe de le devenir.

Autant de personnalités qui regardent la vie avec leur cœur et leurs sensibilités, qui tentent de ne pas subir, en tout cas de s’évader, de proposer autre chose.

La ville se prête si bien à ce regard sur la planète qu’il est normal que l’on s’y arrête ou que l’on y revienne .

Le plus, c’est que la ville touche de grands noms dans toutes les disciplines de l’Art actuel. Les acteurs majeurs et les futurs majeurs, qui incubent pour l’instant dans l’underground.

40000 habitants à la louche, un centre d’art contemporain, un dynamique musée municipal, un musée des arts modestes, un festival de poésie, des collections particulières, un festival international de photo, une maison d’édition notoire de livres d’art contemporain, un festival de Jazz, d’autres de musiques du monde entier, un de musique électro planétaire, des galeries, un festival international de performance, des idées par milliers...

Y a de quoi faire, ça se voit, ça se sent.

Ce petit plus fait que notre petite ville, on en parle aux quatre coins du monde et que ça ne fait que commencer...

Le musée Paul Valéry Près du cimetière marin, face au Théâtre de la Mer, le musée PaulValéry récemment rénové et agrandi propose jusqu’au 31 octobre Dufy en Méditerranée. D’abord inspiré par l’impressionnisme, Raoul Dufy s’est ensuite orienté vers le fauvisme avant d’effectuer des recherches annonçant le cubisme. Né au Havre en 1977, il s’est installé dans le Sud de la France en 1940 pour y passer le reste de ses jours.

Par la réunion d’œuvres majeures provenant de collections publiques et privées internationales, cette exposition met en évidence l’omniprésence dans la production du peintre d’une Méditerranée vers laquelle il n’a cessé de revenir tout au long de sa vie. Le musée propose en outre une salle entièrement dédiée à l’œuvre du poète Paul Valéry ainsi qu’une salle consacrée aux traditions sétoises, notamment les joutes. Le tout dans un cadre enchanteur.

Near the seaside cemetery, facing the Theatre de la Mer, the Paul Valéry Museum, recently renovated and extended, is showing “Dufy en Mediterranean” until 31st October. Originally inspired by impressionism, Raoul Dufy was then oriented towards Fauvism before doing some research announcing cubism. Born in Le Havre in 1977, he settled in southern France in 1940 to spend the rest of his days there. By gathering major works from international public and private collections, this exhibition highlights the ubiquity in the painter’s production of the Mediterranean to which he has continued to return throughout his life. The museum is also a room dedicated to the work of poet Paul Valery and a room dedicated to Setois traditions, including jousting... all in a delightful setting..

A cultural exception

Le M.i.A.M. Le Miam, c’est le Musée International des Arts Modestes !

Hébergé sur le quai, ce musée unique, mis en scène par Hervé Di Rosa et Bernard Belluc, réunit un patrimoine des objets du quotidien ordinaire que l’on jette d’habitude dans de vieux tiroirs (pochettes surprises , vieux scoubidous, poupées Barbie, cadeaux Bonux…), entrés au panthéon de la popularité et de l’éphémère.

Ces objets manufacturés ou artisanaux, souvent clinquants, inutiles et bariolés viennent des périphéries de l’art naïf, de l’art brut ou de l’art populaire, mais ils forment, dorénavant, par la volonté de leurs collectionneurs, une famille autonome: la famille modeste qui fédère ces différents territoires.

L’ensemble curieux et plutôt insolent, complété par des expositions temporaires , se veut une passerelle entre les Arts populaires et l’Art contemporain. A conseiller à tous les curieux et férus d’expressions différentes et pertinentes.

I’m not even going to try and write some rehashed touristy article trying to sell you hotel rooms and stuff like that. That’s the press’s job – and they do it very well.

I thought I’d do something a bit different so here goes.

OK, it is true that we all feel good here, but remember, you’re not in any old Mediterranean seaside resort.

This is Sète.

As well as being a picture postcard of a town with its quays, canals and boats, as soon as you get here you get a real strong feeling about the place – it’s got that little extra something.

You might love it or hate it but in any case you won’t stay on the fence about it.

Whether you’re born here or came here for a weekend, a month, or a year, you’ll be talking about it with friends twenty years later, saying what a great idea it was to stay here.

Down here we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and for us, this aspect of life alone is a great luxury to have.

Here, verbal jousting is just as traditional as the Languedoc jousting contests themselves.

Sète is a port, and the sea has always been the gateway to dreams, diversity, escape and travel.

When we listen in on what’s going on around us, we hear people from all over laughing, eating, dreaming and crying. We travel far and wide, and we travel while we’re there.

And as the town is small, it’s virtually impossible to shut yourself off.

OK let me explain.

Here everyone mixes – it’s unavoidable. The mechanic and the designer, the architect and the fisherman, the great artist and the shopkeeper, the lost soul and the bureaucrat, the rich and the poor, the smart and the stupid, the show-offs and the aristocrats, the louts and the housewives, humans and other humans…no longer broken up.

Everyone rubs shoulders with each other in this small town with humility and modesty, which characterise the loudmouths you find here. Give this some thought and you’ll see that it’s not incompatible at all.

The Miam is the International Museum of the Modest Arts!

Located on a quay, this unique museum directed by Herve Di Rosa and Bernard Belluc, brings a wealth of ordinary everyday objects (goodie bags, Barbie dolls, Kinder surprise gift...) entered in the pantheon of the popular and ephemeral.

These objects manufactured or homemade, often flashy, gaudy and useless come from the outskirts of naive, outsider or folk art, but they now form, run by the will of their collectors, an autonomous family: the modest family that unites these different territories.

The whole thing curious and rather insolent, supplemented by temporary exhibitions, is intended as a bridge between Folk Art and Contemporary Art. This is surely one of the reasons why Sète, in its human surroundings, has always attracted people who prefer to take a different approach to life – people who are bored of conventions, who flee from credit fuelled lifestyles and the models forced onto them – people who look at life with a different point of view.

They include Valéry, Brassens, Di Rosa, Combas, Soulages, Desnoyer, Peterson, Varda, Dezeuze, and so many other famous and soon-to-be-famous names.

So many personalities who live life from the heart and with their own sensibilities, who won’t put up with how things are, and instead escape and offer an alternative.

As the town is so in tune with this view on the world, it is normal that many settle or return here.

The advantage of this is that the town has attracted many of today’s big names throughout the arts sector, including some major figures plus a few names to look out for in the future, who are currently emerging in the underground scene.

Around 40,000 inhabitants, a centre of contemporary art, a dynamic municipal museum, a museum of ‘arts modestes’ (everyday art), a poetry festival, private collections, an international photography festival, a well-known contemporary art book publisher, a Jazz festival, other music festivals showcasing music from around the world, a global electro festival, galleries, an international performance art festival, the list goes on.

Bienvenue aux miliers de festivaliers du Worldwide festival 5e édition (déjà…) qui contribuent par la diversité des nationalités à faire de Sète une ville européenne à part entière qui a su garder toute sa singularité et cultiver son patrimoine.

Le WF en fait désormais partie au même rang que les autres grands événements de l’été sétois dont la fête des pêcheurs qui se déroule au même moment. Et je suis particulièrement heureux de l’attention portée par les organisateurs et le public à l’inestimable patrimoine de notre ville, aussi bien culturel qu’environnemental, gastronomique, et bien d’autres. Autant d’éléments qui justifient l’aide apportée par la municipalité au festival et favorisent l’intégration de ce formidable événement autour des musiques actuelles et d’artistes éclectiques souvent inédits en France en de nombreux lieux emblématiques de la ville et au sein de sa population.

It is a great pleasure to welcome the many thousands of festival goers to the 5th edition (already!) of the Worldwide Festival, which through its diversity of nationalities, makes Sète a fully fledged European town that has managed to retain all of its uniqueness and cultivate its heritage. The WF now has the same standing as the town’s other major summer events, including the «fête des pêcheurs» fishing spectacular, which takes place at the same time. I’m particularly thrilled by the interest the festival’s organisers and fans have shown in the invaluable heritage of our town, as well as the cultural, environmental and gastronomic wonders it has to offer. THE DIAMOND SEA DU 3 JUILLET AU 3 OCTOBRE 2010

Pour la première fois depuis son ouverture, le Centre Régional d’Art Contemporain, à Sète, consacre l’ensemble de ses espaces à un seul artiste, Claude LÉVÊQUE, dont le projet spécifique, “The Diamond Sea”, nous invite à expérimenter un parcours visuel et sensoriel.

Comme suite d’été au “Grand Soir”, présenté à la 53ème biennale de Venise en 2009, Claude Lévêque poursuit la navigation sur le grand canal de la lagune vénitienne, un an après, sur le canal du Rhône à Sète. Il inscrit ce nouveau voyage dans les espaces du CRAC Languedoc-Roussillon.

Dans l’interview accordée à Timothée Chaillou (à paraître dans le catalogue de la manifestation Casanova Forever), Claude Lévêque confie que “l’expérience vénitienne observée dans les tableaux du Carpaccio, du Tintoret, de Véronèse et Bellini qui ont alimenté sa réponse à l’architecture du Pavillon français lui permettent aujourd’hui des représentations autres, voyageant entre ciel et mer

dans les espaces du CRAC.” Deux projets liés par la figure de Casanova et par la géographie de Venise et de Sète, avec leurs canaux, qui constituent un espace de transport, de transmission.

“Un monde chimèrique” A Sète, dans la continuité de Venise donc, l’exposition se délivre du carcan de l’architecture du CRAC et amène l’artiste à remettre en question sa façon de s’adapter et d’investir les lieux. En évoquant la mer comme surface scintillante, l’eau comme miroir, “The Diamond Sea” nous plonge dans un monde chimérique, où la mer, dans ce

qu’elle peut avoir d’imaginaire, de dramatique, d’onirique, renvoie au personnage trouble, imposteur et séducteur de Casanova. Dans “The Diamond Sea”, la lumière, ou plutôt son absence, joue un rôle majeur. “La lumière est un élément primordial pour la métamorphose, pour venir révéler. Elle crée de la magie et met les choses en scène. J’aime les réalités transcendées. Je me réclame toujours des standards du monde, du spectacle, son matériel, sa symbolique, ses éléments à l’identification accessible.

Ils déterminent une réflexion qui n’est pas nécessairement critique ou philosophique, mais plutôt poétique et émotionnelle.”

For the first time in its existence, the CRAC is dedicating all its rooms to just one artist: Claude Lévêque. His specific project, “The Diamond Sea” is a real visual and sensorial journey.

As a summer sequel to “Grand Soir”, presented at the 53rd biennial art show in Venice in 2009, Claude Lévêque follows his visit around the grand canal in Venice with a trip on the Rhone canal in Sète. This latest journey is presented in the rooms of the CRAC Languedoc-Roussillon. In an interview for Timothée Chaillou (for the Casanova Forever catalogue), the artist explains that “the Venetian experience portrayed in paintings by Carpaccio, Tintoret, Véronèse and Bellini really stirred up his reaction to French pavilion architecture. Now he can portray things differently, travelling between land and sky, all within the walls of the CRAC”. Two projects linked by Casanova and the geography of Venice and Sète with their canal systems, represent travelling, transient spaces.

In Sète, as in Venice, the artist had to deal with the complicated architecture of the CRAC and it made him question himself about how he could adapt his way of working, and bring the place to life . By depicting the sea surface as a mirror, “The Diamond Sea” immerses us into a chimeric world in which the sea, with its imaginary, dramatic and dream like state, reminds us of the shady and seductive character that was Casanova. In “The Diamond Sea”, the light, or we should say the lack of light, plays a major role. “Light is an essential element in metamorphosis, for revelation. It creates magic and really brings things to life. I like to go beyond reality.

I still believe I am part of the world’s standards, its material, its symbols, its elements that enable accessible identification. They shape a way of thinking which isn’t necessarily critical or philosophical, but poetic and emotional”.

Zouk machine Le Worldwide Festival se déplace pour la troisième année consécutive à Singapour et s’engage dans un nouveau partenariat avec le Zouk (la Mecque de la nuit Asiatique) pour deux WF Sessions fin août. Rencontre avec Jeremy Boon, meilleur ambassadeur du Zouk et figure emblématique de Singapour, qui nous raconte ses débuts et réussites avec le Zouk...

WF will travel for the third year running to Singapore and embark on a new partnership with Zouk (the Asian’s nightlife Mecca) on the last week-end of August for two WF sessions. Let us introduce you to Jeremy Boon, Zouk’s main ambassador and one of Singapore most respected DJ. Je suis DJ depuis 25 ans, dont 19 au Zouk. Le club Zouk, “le bal du village” en Créole, est devenu une institution dans le monde de la nuit à Singapour depuis 1991, ce qui en fait l’un des clubs les plus connus au monde. De la house au garage en passant par la techno, le big beat ou le break, il a toujours été à la pointe. Tout en respectant son crédo “One World, One Music, One Tribe, One Dance”, Zouk continue aujourd’hui à rassembler des clubbers du monde entier et garde son statut de Mecque de la nuit Asiatique. Je prends toujours du plaisir quand je repense à toutes ces années ici et aux premiers jours. J’ai commencé dès l’ouverture en 1991 et j’ai participé à l’introduction de la balearic house à Singapour avec le légendaire DJ Alfredo, fraîchement débarqué d’Ibiza. Influencé par Norman Jay, Osunlade, Rainer Truby, Alex Barck et bien sûr Gilles Peterson, Ma passion pour la musique underground et soulful a habité les murs de la salle ‘Velvet Underground’ du Zouk, oû je mêlait ma house music à des sons afro, disco, soul, jazz, latin et boogie. Depuis j’ai exporté cette passion à l’étranger, portant l’étendard du Zouk, notamment à Amsterdam, Ibiza, au Japon ou encore pour des soirées avant le ZoukOut en Inde pour promouvoir notre festival annuel et pour représenter Singapour.

Zouk, meaning “village party” in Creole, has since 1991 established itself as Singapore’s premier entertainment institution, leading it to the forefront of global clubbing. From house to garage, techno to progressive or big beat to br eaks, it is always on point and ahead of the curve. Staying true to its creed “One World, One Music, One Tribe, One Dance”, Zouk remains till today as Asia’s nightlife Mecca bringing clubbers together from all over the world. It is often with much joy and passion that I think back on my years at Zouk and the early days.

I have been djing for 25 years, of which 19 years have been with Zouk. I started out with Zouk since its inception in 1991 and played a role with the introduction of balearic house in Singapore with Ibiza legendary dj Alfredo during these early days.

Djs Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, Osunlade, Rainer Truby, Alex Barck (Jazzanova) are just a few key influences that continue to inspire me... With my passion for soulful underground music, I have championed the sounds of the ‘Velvet Underground’ room at Zouk with an eclectic mix of house music fused with afro, latin, jazz, soul, disco and boogie.

I have similarly brought my musical passion overseas, flying the Zouk flag, with gigs at Amsterdam Dance Event, Pacha Ibiza, Womb Japan, including preZoukOut gigs in India (organised by the Singapore Tourism Board) to both promote our annual dance music festival, ZoukOut as well as represent Singapore.

BLACK POETRY

Avec ses quarante ans de parfaite synthèse entre soul, jazz, et poésie, une vingtaine d’albums, deux romans et trois recueils de poèmes, c’est un des mythes les plus influents depuis les années 70 que le WF a l’honneur d’inviter cette année. Comme nul autre, Gil Scott-Heron a élevé la poésie des rues des quartiers noirs des métropoles américaines au rang de forme d’art.

Et cette date du 8 juillet 2010, à 20h30 au St-Christ, redonnera au mot ‘Soul ‘sa vraie valeur.

With his perfect blend of soul, jazz and poetry, around twenty albums, two novels and three collections of poems spanning a forty year career, Gil Scott Heron has been one of the most influential figures since the 1970’s, and it is a real honour for WF to be able to welcome him to Sete this year. Like no other artist, Gil Scott-Heron has turned the poetry of black American neighbourhoods into an art form.

And on the 8th July at 8.30pm at Saint Christ, we will be rediscovering the true value of the word ‘Soul’.

Black Arrow, ‘la flèche noire’, fut le nom de son père, footballeur jamaïcain, lorsqu’il portait le maillot du club ‘Celtic FC’, célèbre écurie de Glasgow. C’est depuis son fils, Gil Scott-Heron, qui fend l’air de ses propres salves, mais ici à travers son ‘spoken word’, utilisant le texte comme arme ultime et sublime.

Né en 1949 à Chicago, il grandit à Jackson, Tennessee, auprès de sa grand-mère qui lui inculque de solides notions musicales et littéraires. Mais étant un des premiers noirs à intégrer une école blanche dans le Sud des Etats-Unis, il est confronté au racisme ambiant et part à l’âge de treize ans s’installer à New-York rejoindre sa mère.

Gil Scott-Heron débarque alors dans le Bronx et devient un homme de la rue. Son oeuvre, musicale ou écrite, reflétera alors une volonté de crier haut et fort les problèmes politiques et les faits sociaux qu’il vivra au quotidien.

A vingt et un ans, Gil a déjà à son actif un roman (‘The Vulture’, Le vautour), un recueil de poésies, ‘Small Talk at the 125th and Lenox’, et sous le même titre, un premier disque. Son talent de composition, chanteur et pianiste l’écarte peu à peu de l’écriture pour le diriger vers une carrière de musicien. Il enregistre alors en 1971 et 1972 deux albums exceptionnels, ‘Pieces of man’ et ‘Free will’, produit par Bob Thiele, légendaire producteur de jazz, (qui a produit John Coltrane, Archie Shepp,…et a fondé le label Flying Dutchman).

S’il est moins connu que d’autres musiciens de la scène noire américaine tels que Curtis Mayfield ou Marvin Gaye, il n’en reste pas moins qu’il est considéré comme le précurseur du rap et qu’il a influencé de nombreux musiciens issus de ce mouvement ‘spoken word’ (The Last Poet, Mike Ladd, Saul Williams), et bien d’autres (Assassin, Galliano, Public Enemy, Rage Against the Machine, Ben Harper…). De ses influences on retiendra surtout les musiciens, plus que les écrivains. Richie Hawens pour ce qu’il fait avec les images et les rythmes, Coltrane pour le côté intemporel et dynamique de son œuvre, Otis Redding pour sa manière de chanter qui fait que les paroles deviennent des sons, les poèmes de Langston Hugues, la soul urbaine de Curtis mayfield et le blues de Robert Johnson ont profondément marqué Gil Scott-Heron.

Le génie ne s’arrêtant pas là, il enregistre en 1974 le chef-d’œuvre absolu, ‘Winter in America’, considéré par beaucoup aujourd’hui comme un album majeur, l’un de ses plus beaux albums, qui le consacre comme l’une des voix les plus emblématiques de sa génération. Cette voix, ses textes, c’est ce qui compte avant tout dans sa démarche, le ‘spoken word’, ces chants scandés qu’il utilise comme une arme.

Et si sa voix est une arme, son combat pour la défense des noirs dès la fin des années 60, et son engagement politique sont sans retenue. Ses textes se nourrissent, entre autres, de la réalité de la rue,

de « sa » rue, des problèmes politiques et sociaux dont lui-même souffre au quotidien. Il décrira la misère, la violence et la drogue qui ravagent les ghettos, en critiquant la politique américaine et notamment le gouvernement de Nixon, et étendra ses propos pour dénoncer l’apartheid.

Car Gil est un intellectuel brillant, avide de connaissances. Et ses concerts prennent souvent l’allure de débats politiques avec le public.

Le godfather de la protest soul sera même décrit par le gouvernement américain comme «le plus dangereux musicien vivant».

Après avoir traversé les années 80 sans encombres, il est de retour en 94 avec l’album ‘Spirits’ puis aujourd’hui, seize ans après ce dernier opus, Gil Scott-Heron vient nous délivrer le sobre et digne ‘I’m New Here’.

The ‘Black Arrow’ was the nickname given to his father, a Jamaican footballer, whilst playing for famous Glasgow club Celtic. But instead of firing volleys, Gil Scott-Heron became a master of spoken word, using text as his ultimate yet sublime weapon.

Born in Chicago in 1949, he grew up in Jackson, Tennessee with his grandmother who instilled solid musical and literary notions into him from a very early age.

But being one of the first black pupils to attend a white school in the southern United States, he found himself in a very racist environment, and at the age of thirteen when his granmother died, he moved to New York to live with his mother.

Scott Heron was now a streewise Bronx boy. His early musical and written work was a rallying cry about the political problems and social issues he was confronted with on a daily basis.

At the age of 20, Gil had already completed a novel (The Vulture), a collection of poems, ‘Small talk at the 125th and Lenox’, and his first record of the same name. His talent as a singer and pianist started to gradually move him away from writing and instead towards a career as a musician. In 1971 and 1972, he recorded two exceptional albums, ‘Pieces of Man’ and ‘Free Will’, produced by legendary jazz producer Bob Thiele (who also produced work by John Coltrane and Archie Shepp as well as founding the Flying Dutchman label). Though he is perhaps not as well known as other black American artists such as Curtis Mayfield or Marvin Gaye, he’s considered as one of the forefathers of rap, after influencing many musicians from the spoken word movement (The Last Poet, Mike Ladd, Saul Williams), plus a whole host of artists from other genres (Assassin, Galliano, Public ennemy, Rage Against the Machine, Ben Harper).

Most of his influences are musicians rather than writers; Richie Hawens for his work with images and rhythms, Coltrane for the timeless and dynamic aspect of his work, Otis Redding for his unique way of singing and his ability to turn words into sounds, the poems of Langston Hughes, the urban soul of Curtis Mayfield and the blues of Robert Johnson all had a profound impact on Gil Scott Heron. And the genius didn’t stop there. In 1974 he recorded the masterpiece ‘Winter in America’, considered by many today as a major album - one of his most beautiful records which made him known for having one of the most symbolic voices of his generation. A unique voice, coupled with lyrical passages - these are the things that are most important in spoken word - these rhythmic melodies that Gil uses as lethal weapons. And while his voice is a weapon, his battle to defend blacks which started back in the late 60’s, and his political commitment are relentless. His lyrics portray, amongst other things, the reality of street life. He describes the misery, violence and drugs which sweep through the ghettos, whilst criticizing American politics, particularly the Nixon government, and also wrote about the fight to bring down apartheid. Yet Gil is a shining intellectual brimming with knowledge, and his concerts often have the feel of a political debate with the audience. The 80’s was a fairly quiet decade for Gil, then in 1994 he came back with the album ‘Spirits’, and now, sixteen years after that release, Heron brings us the dark and dignified ‘I’m new here’.

Il y a cinq ans, l’ancien compagnon de route des Clash, Don Letts, réalisait un documentaire saisissant sur Gil Scott- Heron pour la BBC. Gil y paraissait hagard, ayant subi la réalité des drogues qu’il dénonçait durant sa carrière. Suite à la diffusion de ce film, le patron du label anglais XL est allé le rencontrer à la prison de Rikers Island pour lui proposer la seule forme de rédemption adaptée : un nouvel album.

La légende vivante nous revient aujourd’hui avec un exorcisme musical intense. C’est à un poignant face-à-face avec lui-même auquel il nous convie dans son dernier album, à un bras de fer poétique, mais sans merci, avec cet éternel Léviathan intime du Soulman noir américain. Un opus minimal et intimiste, prophétique, tournant le dos au passé jazz-funk pour un voyage sombre et urbain, empruntant autant au blues-folk qu’au gospel, à l’electronica mélancolique qu’au sombre dubstep ambiant londonien.

Five years ago, ex touring partner with the Clash, Don Letts, produced a striking documentary on Gil Scott Heron for the BBC. Gil seemed haggard, having fallen victim to the harsh realities of drugs that he was so against during his career. After this film was broadcast, the boss of label XL went to meet him at Rikers Island prison to put forward to him the only suitable route to redemption - a new album. So the living legend is back with us with intense musical exorcism. It’s a poignant heartto-heart which he invites us to share with him in his latest album, with a poetic yet merciless iron fist, with this eternal intimate Levithian of the black American soul man. Laissez moi vous présenter mes quatre artistes préférés, originaires des quatre coins de mon petit pays : au Nord, vous avez ‘Brazzaville’, un super groupe bien funky installé à Antwerp. Si vous continuez plus à l’Est vous tomberez sur le son de ‘Baloji’, qui fusionne Hip-Hop et musique traditionnelle du Congo (La Belgique compte une forte communauté Congolaise).Au Sud de Bruxelles vous ne pourrez pas louper les deux djs qui forment le duo ‘Onda Sonora’, et pour finir, tout à l’Ouest, c’est ‘J to The C’, dj et musicien qui porte bien haut l’étendart des musiques qu’on aime.

Let me introduce you to 4 very interesting artists from 4 different ends of my country. North, we have ‘Brazzaville,’ a funky group from Antwerp, going East you’ll find the music of ‘Baloji’, mixing hiphop and Congolese traditional music. From the southern part of Brussels we have a dynamic duo of deejays called ‘Onda Sonora’ and finally in the west, a talented musician and deejay called ‘J To The C’. Enjoy this little tour throughout the country and different music landscapes.

BALOJI Né à Lubumbashi au Congo, Baloji, accompagnant son père, débarque en Belgique à l’âge de 4 ans. Il entre dans le milieu hip hop à 13 ans, fasciné également par le tag et la danse. Le coup de foudre pour la musique lui vient de l’écriture sophistiquée d’ Akhenaton et à 15 ans, il devient MC dans le groupe ‘Malfrats Linguistiques’, qui deviendra ‘Starflam’. En 2004, Baloji quitte le groupe en laissant derrière lui le monde de la musique. Après avoir reçu une lettre de sa mère au Congo (après 25 ans) lui demandant ce qu’il devenait, il décide d’écrire un album autobiographique intitulé ‘Hotel Impala’. Aujourd’hui il vient de ressortir cet album avec l’Orchestre de la Katuba, donnant à cet album une touche plus africaine... et c’est la classe.

I’ve known Baloji for years, a Belgian rapper with Congolese roots; born in Lumumbashi, he lived in Kinshasa before moving to Ostend and Liège where he started his career. He was part of the best rap group we’ve had so far in the country, ‘Starflam’. In 2004 he decided to leave the music business, until he received a letter from his mother (after 25 years without any contact) in Congo asking him what he has done all those years. After a lot of reflection he finally answered his mother through a biographic album called Hotel Impala (2007).

Today he has made a rework of that album with ‘l’Orchestre de la Katuba’, giving the album a more African touch. And it’s amazing ! www.baloji.com

Pasta Fazoule : Moiteur chaude et collante par certains temps à la mer à Sète.

BRAZZAVILLE Brazzaville c’est un groupe de sept membres qui produisent de la musique aventureuse, excitante, avec un son funky. Inspiré du jazz et funk des années 70, afrobeat et rare groove. Ils ont enregistré leur premier album “days of thunder, days of grace” en mars 2008 sur le label ‘Penguin Jazz Records’. Ayant fait les premières parties d’Al Jarreau ou encore des Neville Brothers et Marcus Miller, ils travaillent à un nouvel album qui sera enregistré en Mai et co-produit par Ben Lamdin de Nostalgia77 et Skeletons.

Brazzaville is a 7-headed band that produces an exciting, adventurous and especially a funky sound. The music is inspired by 70’s jazz, funk, afrobeat and rare grooves. They recorded their debut album « days of thunder, days of grace » in march 2008 on Evil Penguin Jazz Records. They already opened for artists like Al Jarreau, Marcus Miller and the Neville Brothers. They are working on their second album that will be recorded in May and is co-produced by Ben Lamdin from Nostalgia77 and Skeletons. www.brazzavillemusic.com

ONDA SONORA ‘Onda Sonora’ était originellement le nom de leur soirée à Halle, une petite ville non loin de Bruxelles. Pour simple raison le fait qu’ils ne trouvaient pas le genre de soirée qu’ils voulaient, inspirés par des soirées telles que ‘Loft, Body & Soul’ ou encore ‘Paradise Garage’, le duo de deejays commença donc par inviter des artistes internationaux tels que Tom Trago, Rainer Trüby, Red Astaire et bien d’autres. N’étant pas des pur extrémistes d’une chapelle musicale en particulier, ils ont un gros penchant pour tout ce qui est boogie-disco-house... Aujourd’hui ils organisent leurs soirées sur la capitale, Bruxelles, et ont une émission radio sur FMBrussel. Vous les aurez peut-être croisés au ‘Worldwide’ ou ‘Southport Weekender’ une bière à la main. Chopez leur shows sur le web, Onda Sonora c’est toujours du bon temps et une bonne sélection !

Onda Sonora (a deejay duo) originated as a party in Halle (a local youth centre called JH Eenders), a city 15km south of Brussels, just before the new millennium kicked in. As a reaction to the nightlife, at that moment in time, that couldn’t satisfy them. Inspired by parties like Respect and what they read about The Loft, Body & Soul and the Paradise Garage. Just to have a good time on the music they liked, they started booking international dj’s like Tom Trago, Rainer Trueby, Red Astaire and many more… Both deejays are not really into one specific music genre although I know they like everything that sounds disco and boogie as well as house music.Today they organise parties in the capital, Brussels and host a radioshow on FM Brussel; you might also see them walk around at festivals like Worldwide or Southport Weekender; Onda Sonora stands for good times, nice selections and a beer !

J TO THE C Je connais J to the C (on dit Jay Cee) depuis un certain temps. Je l’ai toujours connu comme quelqu’un d’hyperactif, super sympa et avec un énorme sourire. À l’époque on était tous turntablists et il n’était donc pas étonnant de se rencontrer souvent.

Jonas Casier est son vrai nom. Né en 1980 à Roeselare, petite ville flamande pas très loin de la frontière française. En jouant avec son Microkorg, un set de batterie et de platines ainsi qu’un microphone il décide petit à petit à se mettre à la production.

Il commença en tant que deejay hiphop avec Alex Deforce puis en 2OO2 il participe à plusieurs jamsessions à ‘De Kreun’, (une salle mythique de la région à l’époque) avec des artistes reconnus en Belgique tels que Peter Lesage, Karel De Backer et Yannick Uyttenhove.

Avec ses prouesses techniques aux platines il rentre dans le bigband de DJ Grazzhoppa (un de nos meilleurs turntablists) en 2005. Pendant les jam sessions du bigband il eut l’occasion de jouer avec Jef Neve (voir Jose James) ainsi que Aka Moon ou Stijn et de monter sur scène à Roskilde au Danemark ou encore Lowlands aux Pays-Bas. Son chant lui permit de faire une apparition sur l’album “Rappin’ Blak” du producteur néerlandais

Who is Lefto ?

Kid Sublime. Il monta aussi sa propre formation Bad Mothas en 2008 avec quelques membres d’un autre groupe dans le genre ‘Brothers On The Run’.

Aujourd’hui il parcourt le pays avec son groupe J to the C & the Bad Mothas, un show très funky et marrant qui fait vibrer le coeur et le derrière des filles pendant que les hommes l’envient au bar...

I’ve known J to the C (we say Jay Cee) for a while now; always knew the man as a hyper-active guy, super friendly and always smiling. As we were all turntablists back then, we automatically connected.

His real name is Jonas Casier, born aquarius 1980 in Roeselare (Belgium). Playing at home with a microkorg, a simple drumset, a microphone, a set of turntables and a funky mind resulted in making songs of his own.

He started out as a hiphop dj together with Alex Deforce (who also runs www.on-point.be), he got eager to train his scratching-skills on the turntables.

Playing music intensively got him to singing along with it, so in 2002 he did several jamsessions at De Kreun, a famous venue in Bissegem back then, with artists such as Peter Lesage, Karel De Backer and Yannick Uyttenhove, local musicians with a severe musical baggage.

All that cutting and scratching resulted him to join DJ

Grazzhoppa’s DJ Bigband in 2005 (a band consisting of many turntablists), and later got him featured on two tracks on Belgian producer Billy Palmier’s debut album.

During jamsessions of the dj bigband, he got the chance to play along artists such as Jef Neve, AKA Moon and Stijn just to name a few and rocked European festivals such as Roskilde (DK), Lowlands (NL), Jazz Middelheim (BE) and many others.

Les nouveaux punks de la deep house Damien, Clément et Jonathan ont tout essayé, le foot, le reggae, le hip-hop, le funk et finalement ils se sont tous les trois mis d’accord pour produire une house racée en se chargeant de multiples substances. Une musique qui parlera autant à vos pieds qu’à vos parties génitales, une musique qui transpire le sexe et la soul. « Take drugs to make music to take drugs to... » Les afficionados savaient, dés leurs premiers maxis sur MilnorModern ou Cirkus, que dOP s’affirmerait comme un gros coup de pied au cul d’un courant musical moribond devenu morne, redondant : la ‘deep house’. C’est en les voyant jouer live que le néophyte comprendra l’étendue du talent des trois conios, ça pue le sexe mais les émotions restent là, ça a l’air tout pété et foutraque mais c’est tendu comme un string sur un trav trop bien monté - une énergie à laquelle on ne peut pas résister... Interview éclair aprés leur immense prestation «shamanique» aux Worldwide Awards de Gilles à Londres en février dernier.

Damien, Clément and Jonathan had a go at everything, including football, reggae, hiphop and funk, but in the end they all agreed on creating a classy house sound whilst getting charged up on various substances. Music that hits your feet as much as it hits your genitals – music that oozes sex and soul. «Take drugs to make music to take drugs to...»

Afficionados knew, straight after hearing the releases on MilnorModern and Cirkus, that dOP would make their mark and give a big kick up the backside to a genre which was becoming very dull and increasingly less relevant – Deep House. It’s when they play live that newcomers start to understand just how talented these guys are. It’s a sexy act, but the feeling’s still there. It looks pretty chaotic yet it’s as tight as a drag queen’s G-string that’s been pulled up too high, with an irresistible energy that’s hard to shake off. We joined them for an explosive interview after their immense “shamanic” performance at Gilles’s Worldwide Awards in London in February.

WF - Quand on checke ‘dOP’ sur le web, outre votre myspace et les pages vous concernant, on tombe sur une fameuse marque de shampoing, mais aussi sur un certain Jean Dop, rugbyman français des années 50 et quelques sigles dont ‘Dilution Of Precision’, qui calcule la précison de données GPS par triangulation, ou encore ‘Denominazione di origine protetta’, en gros l’équivalent italien des AOC pour le vin !

Laquelle de ces définitions vous parle le plus ? dOP - Pour être honnêtes, elles nous plaisent toutes. ET il y en a encore pleins d’autres. Et même si on met le P à la place du D, ça fait «Penis of Dragons».

On est tombés sur vous par hasard, et plus personnellement votre vision de la house music, votre façon de lui mettre un bon pied au cul, m’a bien bluffé - surtout à un moment où quand on parlait de House voire de Deep House on s’imaginait un gros dj tout mou qui poussait des disques soit chiants, soit super garage mais chiants quand même, et on a tous eu la révélation en vous voyant jouer l’année dernière au WF sur la plage - c’est quoi la recette ?

Ingrédients pour 1 personne : 1,5 cl de vodka, 1,5 cl de gin, 1,5 cl de rhum blanc, 1,5 cl de triple sec (Giffard, Cointreau, Grand-Marnier), 1,5 cl de

tequila, 1 cl de jus de citron, 3 cl de cola (CocaCola ou Pepsi). Mais attention, c’est la recette seulement pour une personne, donc après ça dépend combien on est.

WF - When we searched for ‘dOP’ on the net, apart from your myspace page and other sites about you, lots of articles for a certain brand of shampoo came up, as well as info on Jean Dop, a French rugby player from the 1950’s, a few acronyms short for ‘Dilution Of Precision’, which calculates the accuracy of Sat Nav data, and ‘Denominazione di origine protetta’, which is part of the Italian wine classification system!

Which of these definitions speaks to you the most? dOP - To be honest, we like them all. AND there’s loads of others as well. Plus if you swap the D and the P around you get ‘’Penis of Dragons’’!

We came across you by chance really. For me your vision of House music - the way you gave it real kick up the backside, really impressed me, especially at a time whenever anyone ever mentioned House or Deep House you tended to picture some dull big name DJ playing a few records that were either really rubbish or super garagy yet rubbish all the same. It was a real

revelation for all of us when we saw you play on the beach at last year’s festival – so, what’s your secret recipe?

Ingredients for 1 person : 1,5 cl of Vodka, 1,5 cl of Gin, 1,5 cl of White rum, 1,5 cl of Triple sec (Giffard, Cointreau, Grand Marnier), 1,5 cl of Tequila, 1 cl of lemon juice, 3 cl of cola (Coca-Cola, Pepsi).

I’ve already been lucky enough to play in stadiums (with Alicia Keys and Shakira, during the opening concert for this year’s world cup).It was great, but I think I’d prefer a strip club on a Sunday afternoon in quite a lot of cities.

On joue avant, c’est lui qui va avoir la pression.

Last year at Worldwide, in the middle of your set on the beach, Gilles grabbed me by the arm and said “hey, it’s the di-o-pi” (he didn’t say dOP he said di-o-pi) it’s a load of Punks playing House – great stuff! We’ve got to get them back here next year on the main stage!!! – so what are you gonna do for us?

We’re gonna do something crazier - we’ve got ‘Mireille Mathieu’ syndrome – so yeah something a bit over the top.

Especially as you’re going on just before Josh Wink – is that gonna put a bit of pressure on you?

We’re going on before him so the pressure’s on him not us.

J’ai lu/vu/entendu que outre l’album (qui sort quand ?) vous enregistriez en Afrique et en Macédoine... et ça, ça nous plaît ! vous bossiez sur des B.O. ? L’avenir de dOP vous le voyez comment ?

On bosse sur la B.o. du prochain Luc Besson qui va s’appeler «viaduk». C’est de la Science-fiction, et ça fait déjà un an qu’on bosse sur le projet. Luc nous adore, on va peut-être même bosser sur ‘’Yamakazi 2’’.

I read/saw/heard that as well as the album (which is out when incidentally?!), you’ve been recording in Africa and Macedonia - and well, we think that’s marvellous! Have you been working on soundtracks? And how do you see the future for dOP? We’re working on the soundtrack for the next Luc Besson film which will be called «Viaduk». It’s a science fiction film and it’s already been a year since we’ve been involved in it. Luc loves us – we might be working on Yamakazi 2 as well.

À l’occasion de leur venue au prochain Worldwide de Sète et avant les sorties prochaines du sixième opus des compils Watergate en juin, puis de leur premier album en octobre prochain, voici dOP. Amis de longues date, les dOP (Damien, Clément et Jonathan) font et jouent de la musique ensemble depuis plus de dix ans, s’ils se sont essayés à nombre de style musicaux avant de trouver leur voie, ce sont avant tout de purs musiciens et ça s’entend.

Proche du duo Nôze, ils partagent avec eux le même studio et surtout un amour immodéré pour les sons organiques, en opposition au tout digital : percussions, flûtes, sax et autres cuivres, tout y passe, et rajoutant à tout ça les lyrics ‘soulful’ et ‘funky’ de Jo sur des beats tous-terrains on obtient la recette parfaite : une musique pour faire la fête avec les pieds, la tête et le cœur !!

Les dOP ont déjà collaboré avec Dave Aju, Guy Gerber, Dj Koze, Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts mais leurs voyages répétés en Afrique du Nord leur ont aussi permis d’approcher des grooves et des techniques musicales différentes : pour toutes ces raisons le premier album du trio à sortir sur Circus Company risque d’être l’une des galettes les plus attendue de la rentrée 2010 !

Leur règles sont : « ne montez jamais sur scène sobre, n’allez jamais dans un club sans jouer, ne voyagez jamais en ‘low-cost’... et aussi ne jouez jamais ‘low-cost’, ne jouez jamais techno sans gros son; et jouez toujours du piano debout. » To get us ready for their appearance at this summer’s Worldwide Festival in Sete, and to tie in with the forthcoming releases of the sixth Watergate mix compilation in June and their first studio album in October, make some noise for dOP! Friends for many years, the guys from dOP (Damien, Clement and Jonathan) have been making and playing music together for over a decade, and though they tried out a wide variety of musical styles before finding their formula, these guys are above all pure musicians, and their sound clearly reflects that. What are you arguments in favour of customising cars?

There’s loads of arguments in favour of it. It’s just like music or design – it’s a question of taste. It’s not just about doing old cars up in a trashy kind of way (even though that’s great) - I’d much rather zoom around in a souped up Golf with a mental sound system, a DVD player, cup holders, heated seats, a dashboard computer and electrical sockets, rather than in a 1982 Opel that’s had 7 owners, doesn’t go above 90 km/h without shaking too much, makes you feel like you’re doing a parachute jump when you open the window and has a busted driver’s door and rear left window.

Aussi, la dernière fois qu’on s’est croisés, Damien m’avait parlé de sa passion pour les rébus c’est trés old school comme passion - et puis je devais orienter l’interview sur ça mais j’ai pas trop le truc - Damien si tu peux nous envoyer un chouette rébus qui pourra parler a tous et clôturer cette interview c’est le top.

Hé bien je n’aime pas que les rébus, j’aime bien les charades aussi, alors pour changer : mon premier dure jusqu’à la mort, Mon deuxième est une boisson. Mon troisième n’est pas court.

POELÉE DE COQUILLAGES, PETITS LÉGUMES, ET BOUILLON AU CITRON KUMBAWA

PAN FRIED SHELLFISH, MIXED VEGETABLES, AND KUMBAWA LEMON BROTH Ingrédients / Coquillages du marché, artichauts, champignons, asperges, fèves, citrons kumbawa. / Shellfish fresh from the market, artichokes, mushrooms, asparagus, broad beans, Kumbawa lemons - Tourner les artichauts et couper les champignons en quarts, les cuire à couvert avec thym, laurier, et un peu de vin blanc. Récupérer le jus pour le bouillon et réserver.

- Blanchir les légumes verts.

- Reprendre le bouillon avec les zestes du citron kumbawa puis émulsionner.

- Poêler les coquillages avec beurre, ail et persil, puis rajouter les légumes et le bouillon.

- Turn the artichokes and cut the mushrooms into quarters, cook them in a covered pan with thyme, laurel and white wine. Save the juice for the broth and leave aside.

- Blanch the green vegetables.

- Add the Kumbawa lemon zest to the broth then emulsify.

- Fry the shellfish in a pan with butter, garlic and parsley, then add the vegetables and the broth.

RISOTTO À L’ENCRE

BLACK RISOTTO Ingrédients / Encornets, encre de seiche, soubressade, poutargue(œufs de poissons fumés), piment fumé, risotto oignons et vin blanc.

Squid, cuttlefish ink, chopped Sobrassada sausage, Botargo (smoked fish eggs), smoked hot peppers, onion risotto and white wine.

- Réaliser le risotto avec une bonne cuillère d’encre de seiche.

- Poêler à vif les encornets jusqu’à coloration et rajouter grossièrement la soubressade.

- Préparer un demi-litre de bouillon, incorporer la poutargue, le piment fumé, puis hors du feu une noisette de beurre, un filet d’huile d’olive, et émulsionner.

- Dresser les encornets sur le risotto et couvrir de l’émulsion.

- Make up the risotto with a large spoonful of cuttlefish ink.

- Fry the squid live until they colour and throw in the Sobrassada.

- Prepare half a litre of stock, add the Bortago, the smoked hot pepper, then away from heat, add a small knob of butter and a dash of olive oil, and then emulsify.

- Lay the squid on the risotto and cover with the emulsion.

BABACOLADA

Ingrédients / Baba, ananas, sorbet ananas, crème coco, rhum. Baba, pineapples, pineapple sorbet, cream of coconut, rum.

- Faire tremper le baba dans un sirop. Réaliser une brunoise d’ananas et disposer au fond du verre.

- Préparer la crème coco avec un tiers de lait pour deux tiers de crème, plus une boite de crème de noix de coco, versés dans un siphon à chantilly avec une cartouche.

- Ajouter le sorbet d’ananas, le baba, un peu de sirop, et du rhum.

Couvrir de la chantilly coco et décorer de gingembre confit.

- Soak the baba in syrup. Dice the pineapples and put them in the bottom of the glass.

- Prepare the cream of coconut with one third of milk for every two thirds of cream, then a tin of cream of coconut poured into a siphon with Chantilly cream using a carton.

- Add the pineapple sorbet, the baba, a little syrup and the rum. Then cover with the coco Chantilly, and top with candied ginger.
