WORLD VIEW

BY MANSHA DASWANI

Are We There Yet? When the World Screen team left our Manhattan offices on March 13, 2020, we thought we’d be working from home for a few weeks, at most. We’re now marking a year of only having seen each other on Zoom. A year! Meanwhile, we’re heading into what will be a second virtual MIPTV and another canceled L.A. Screenings. Series Mania has twice shifted its dates, now settling on a live event that begins in late August. MIPCOM has said it is a go for October 11 to 14 in Cannes. When will we actually know when we can convene in person? Fingers crossed, by early summer, when hopefully enough people will have been vaccinated that we can finally start booking flights and making dinner reservations. I, for one, can’t wait. It’s not that this business can’t function without gettogethers throughout the year. It has done—and numerous organizations have shifted to meet the needs of the times, ours included: this month’s edition of TV Kids features videos from all the great sessions from our inaugural TV Kids Festival (and look out for more details on the summer edition in the coming weeks). But as numerous distributors have told me, finding new business is hard without a physical stand at a market—or a chance meeting at a party. It’s also way less fun (clearly, given the number of execs who have told me of their desires to spend unused event budgets on some very big parties once we return). So as the goalposts keep moving, we’re staying cautiously optimistic that by this fall, you’ll be back to seeing the World Screen team lunch at Goeland or hightailing across the Croisette, magazines and film gear in tow. See you soon, we hope! 6 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

n June 2019, BBC Studios took full ownership of UKTV, including the entertainment channels Alibi, Dave, Drama, Eden, Gold, W and Yesterday, the UKTV brand, as well as the digital service UKTV Play. The year that followed was marked by growth. UKTV’s seven-channel network grew its viewing share by 3.2 percent in 2020 to 4.63 percent, reaching over 18 million viewers a week. The broadcaster built on its commissioning success in the last year as well. UKTV originals delivered the top five highest-rated programs across the network: Red Dwarf: The Promised Land (Dave), Meet the Richardsons (Dave), Ricky & Ralf’s Very Northern Road Trip (Gold), Bangers & Cash (Yesterday) and Red Dwarf: The First Three Million Years (Dave). 10 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

Marcus Arthur, CEO of UKTV and president of BBC Studios UK & Ireland, spoke to World Screen about the ambition and strategic direction of the business, opportunities to work with international partners and new funding models, leveraging the combined strengths of the UKTV and BBC Studios acquisitions teams and more. Arthur identifies three goals that he’s trying to achieve for the business: bolster its content offering to make it as strong

as possible, grow its linear channels business and ensure a future in the SVOD or AVOD spaces. “We will spend more money on content this year than we ever have before, and we’ve spent more on commissioning than we ever have before,” he says. “We will make sure that we understand what our audiences want and try to live up to that.” He declares as his philosophy: “Linear is not dead. Everybody looks at SVOD and AVOD. I genuinely believe there’s an opportunity to grow linear even now, that linear will be here for a long time and we can be stronger in it. So, a big part of our strategy is how to grow linear. There’s gold in those hills for quite a while, and we should try to mine it.” 3/21 WORLD SCREEN 11

MARKET TRENDS

Cathy Payne & Matt Creasey

Banijay Rights By Anna Carugati

W

ith a catalog of 95,000-plus hours—resulting from Banijay’s acquisition of the Endemol Shine Group—Banijay Rights can satisfy just about any programming need. Whether commercial broadcasters keen to reach viewers and advertisers or SVODs seeking to attract and retain subscribers, they can choose from megabrands like MasterChef or Big Brother, cost-effective factual series like Your Garden Made Perfect, stylish crime dramas like Grantchester or addictive series like The Fall. Even in a challenging year like 2020, this trove of shows kept Cathy Payne, the CEO of Banijay Rights, and Matt Creasey, the EVP of sales, co-productions and acquisitions outside EMEA, extremely busy. They talk to World Screen about working with producers and clients whose needs continue to change. 12 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

WSDIG_321_PAYNE-CREASEY.qxp_REAL_408_NIGHT 3/8/21 3:30 PM Page 3

WS: Cathy, what a time to come to market with your huge catalog to satisfy demand, isn’t it? PAYNE: One of the great things about the Banijay catalog is the amount of rights retained, especially for the big international franchises. We have product available for both ends of the spectrum—that which travels widely internationally alongside the domestic library that has strong traction for relicensing in its home market. In addition to the growing number of OTT global services, demand is high from linear broadcasters expanding their domestic VOD platforms. WS: How has the market evolved over the last 12 months? CREASEY: One thing that Covid has highlighted is that new programming is in demand. If you’ve got shows going into production and coming out the other end, both scripted or unscripted, the demand for that programming is unprecedented. That’s due to the U.S. or other countries where production has been slower coming back, creating gaps [in schedules]. But it’s also the proliferation of new platforms trying to build an arsenal of content for their launches. In terms of what they are looking for, it’s evolved. In March of last year, there was a lot [about] Covid lockdown. That went away a long Banijay Rights distributes Grantchester. 3/21 WORLD SCREEN 13

time ago. No one wants to see that on their screens. They want escapism. Escapism can go from a dark, complicated thriller drama to a light, frothy, feel-good entertainment show. WS: Do you have clients now who have smaller budgets, and if so, how are you working with them? PAYNE: No doubt, Covid impacted both revenue and costs, although, on the revenue front, we have seen a recovery in the advertising market. While Covid caused the immediate issue of costs due to shutdowns and a longer production process with additional protocol, pressure on budgets already existed before the pandemic. All markets need original content that is made at a more affordable price point. Unscripted original production provides that, and during the pandemic, non-scripted could return faster. We also experienced a number of non-scripted series having their runs extended. As a global group, we experienced different levels of shutdowns from territory to territory and were able to share best practices within the group. We also do a lot of 14 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

format licensing outside the Banijay footprint territories. We were happy with the level of local production we were able to maintain and how successful that’s been, in particular with our big tentpole franchises such as MasterChef, Big Brother and Survivor. WS: You work with producers from the very beginning of a project. Has any of that process changed because of the pandemic? CREASEY: We’ve been actively working with our producers for a long time, from development through to production and delivery of the shows. The need to find financing on shows has never been more vital, and our role within that has been key to a) help the deficit financing and b) find partners for shows. The proliferation of platforms and [production delays] have [led to an increased need from platforms] to step in on co-productions. Our position working with our producers has been accelerated in the last year. PAYNE: The challenges in financing premium scripted have been around for the past couple of years. If a channel or platform wants a show that costs 3x and their domestic market is only paying 1x, it will only happen with a partner and a contribution from distribution. FOX has renewed LEGO Masters for a second season. 3/21 WORLD SCREEN 15

WSDIG_321_PAYNE-CREASEY.qxp_REAL_408_NIGHT 3/8/21 3:30 PM Page 6

What has hit those premium dramas during Covid are the delays and additional protocols needed that result in not only production hiatus costs but ongoing costs once production commences. In general, broadcasters have been very good and stepped up, as have the distributors. Everyone has been amazing because they want those shows to continue. Financing premium drama won’t be going away anytime soon; however, it doesn’t mean to say that the most expensive shows are always the most successful. WS: Buyers tend to ask for exclusive rights. Is there a willingness to make co-exclusive deals or share rights? PAYNE: For the big premiere titles, for those exclusive must-watch shows, there is a need for exclusivity. But once you get to catalog programs or second runs or second-viewing windows, there is a tendency for more co-exclusivity across a number of platforms. For library, we are seeing more tolerance of the concept that a streamer would rather people stay on their service and watch that show on a non-exclusive basis rather than leave and find it somewhere else. This is all constantly evolving. Of course, for the musthave, I’m-pinning-my-schedule-on-this show, it’s going to be exclusive for some time. WS: What business have you done with AVODs? CREASEY: We were very early adopters of the AVOD space for library content. For a distributor with the size of library that we have, the AVODs have proved a brilliant new source of content supply and income. The majority is still non-exclusive library. We’re not going there yet for exclusivity or certainly not for coproductions. It’s still mostly library; however, we are seeing that open up more. 16 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

s a wholly owned subsidiary of ZDF, ZDF Enterprises’ many responsibilities include selling programs to linear and nonlinear platforms worldwide, initiating coproductions to finance high-end shows and growing ZDF brands. The company can rely on a steady flow of content from the network and has ownership stakes in 20 production companies, which feed ZDF Enterprises’ catalog. As Fred Burcksen, president and CEO, explains, he and his teams have been able to continue to meet clients’ needs with library and new product during the pandemic.

By Anna Carugati

WS: As the commercial arm of a public broadcaster, ZDF Enterprises has programming that other distributors don’t have. Has this type of product been in demand? BURCKSEN: It’s a big advantage to be part of a media organization with its own production output. We profit from the fast output of excellent content from the network. Approximately 50 percent of what we have in our catalog comes from our shareholder, and it’s a steady output, so it’s very helpful. The other 50 percent of our 18 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

content comes from our own investments in third-party content. We are investing globally in good storytelling, be it Australian with live-action kids’ series or U.S. factual content or Danish drama. We feel that we have especially good content for access prime time—some lighter crime series from the network. We have some good output in the genre of love and romance. We have a significant number of TV movies going to Spain for late afternoon time slots. That is very solid. It’s the basis of our distribution activities. WS: The coronavirus forced productions to halt for a while. Have the companies you work with been able to restart shooting? BURCKSEN: Yes, ZDF Enterprises is not only a large distribution company but also a shareholder in some 20 production companies, most of them German. We also have the subsidiaries Off the Fence in Amsterdam and World Media Rights in London. Fortunately, we didn’t have to cancel any commissioned productions. Some of them needed to be interrupted and picked up again or postponed by a season or two. Of course, the Covid-19 protocols were very strict, and we’ve learned to deal with them as well as ZDF Enterprises is co-producing ANA. all in. the testing. 3/21 WORLD SCREEN 19

ZDF Enterprises is showcasing Grow, a new Danish thriller made for TV2.

WS: Do buyers continue to request exclusive rights, or is there more willingness to make co-exclusive deals or share rights? BURCKSEN: With the rise of SVOD platforms, you need to be recognized by original content. Having said that, there is a greater trust for what I call true co-productions—dividing territories or finding solutions for working with SVOD platforms on a co-production basis. What remains difficult is sharing rights in a certain territory. If a broadcaster or platform steps in for a coproduction, they want to defend their own territory. So that remains difficult. But around that, it’s all about fair deals, creativity, finding solutions, finding financing models—it’s very inspiring. WS: Of course, you’ve faced challenges, but ZDF Enterprises seems to have done good business this past year. 20 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

WSDIG_0321_SPOTLIGHT_BURCKSEN-ALT.qxp_REAL_408_NIGHT 3/8/21 3:36 PM Page 4

BURCKSEN: We’ve done surprisingly well. It was tough, but we were in the lucky position that we were quite well prepared. Everyone could work from home within a week or so, so we hardly lost any time. We had content that we had commissioned in 2018, 2019 and coming in 2020. If you had asked me a year ago, Can you go a year without markets and personal contact with clients? I would have said, No, that’s impossible. But we did well. We’ve even exceeded our turnover goals for this year by a bit. Having said that, as we recently discussed with the various distribution teams, if we defeat this pandemic, we shouldn’t try to go back to working the way we did before the pandemic. Nothing will be as it was before. But we are very much looking forward to sitting down with clients again, having dinner with them, and some profound conversations in person. That is something that we really, really miss and are looking forward to doing again.

ISTCO has found much success in the international marketplace with its slate of historical dramas. The Great Seljuks: Guardians of Justice (Uyanış: Büyük Selçuklu) follows in this tradition. From producer Akli Film and broadcast on TRT, the drama has been a ratings leader on Monday nights in Turkey. “With an incredible cast, strong story and great setting, the series is a visual feast for audiences,” says Ayşegül Tüzün, managing director of MISTCO. n a year that was marked by challenges for many in the media industry, Globo was focused on what it could offer the marketplace that would be a beacon of light. “We seek to offer a wide and robust product catalog to the entire international market, but one of the most successful fronts was our strong collection of telenovelas that already runs around the world,” says Angela Colla, Globo’s international sales head. She adds that in the last year, many titles were sought for rebroadcast, “thanks to their enchanting narratives.” Highlights in 2020 included the telenovelas Total Dreamer and Brazil Avenue, “which again won over the public in their successful re-exhibitions, in Brazil and other countries such as Argentina, Hungary, the U.S. and elsewhere,” Colla says. She points out that channels have seen audiences tiring of heavy news consumption surrounding the pandemic. “The search for lighter, cheerful and heartwarming content has increased considerably, which has met our movement to increase our product portfolio for the international market with 3/21 WORLD SCREEN 25

Twelve of FilmRise’s apps are the world’s largest free AVOD services in their genres, including FilmRise True Crime, FilmRise Western and FilmRise Horror. There have been 31.5 million downloads of FilmRise apps.

The show made its debut in France in July, going to air despite the challenging times brought about by the coronavirus pandemic and delivering the right mix of entertainment and laughs that audiences had been so desperately looking for. Good Singers broke records on TF1 with nearly 3.3 million viewers.

“We now have a big chance to achieve a major brand.” —Izzet Pinto

On the back of this stellar performance, Global Agency has closed deals in 14 territories for the format. A local version recently debuted on TNT in Russia under the local title Musical Intuition. This all has given Pinto much confidence and enthusiasm for the company’s performance in 2021. “For a long time, we didn’t have a big prime-time franchise. Having one of these changes the dynamics of the business; there are much bigger license fees. Mostly, our successful formats were daytime, daily shows. We now have a big chance to achieve a major brand.” 34 WORLD SCREEN 3/21

BOGEN When you have a piece of library content that has succeeded over the decades, there is something that the audience responded to. That gives you an enormous head start. Often the reinvention process, while preserving the DNA of what made something work, has so many possibilities. ROES

I said to my team, You know what would be great? A series where superheroes are not superheroes.

–Pierre Sissmann

For me, what is most important in this series is the emotional path. You need kindness; you need benevolence, especially nowadays. These storylines combine a real action series with, as Pierre and Yann said, comedy and joy. There is a lot of cohesion.

–Christine Reinaudo

“Linear [channels] still want digital rights because catch-up, especially for public broadcasters, has become more important.

–Monica Candiani

It’s slightly becoming an all-ornothing model. The move is more generally toward exclusivity, particularly for new IP. The non-exclusive model is an interesting one as well and another developing scenario.

–Alix Wiseman

The irony is, when you have brand-new original content and you’re trying to build a new brand, you’re handcuffed by exclusivity. So there is somewhat of a double standard in our business.

trong female characters are central to DreamWorks’ properties, and the series from DreamWorks Animation are delivering girl power in a big way. For younger audiences, Gabby’s Dollhouse features a young girl who takes viewers on fantastical adventures inside her magical dollhouse full of adorable cat characters. Cleopatra in Space is a scifi-fantasy retelling of a young teenage Cleopatra thrust into a time-traveling journey to save the universe. Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts features a lead character who, despite the odds of survival being stacked against her, leads with kindness, empathy and optimism in a post-apocalyptic world. Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous expands the franchise with kids at the lead for the very first time, featuring three female characters in the core ensemble. There are also Lucky, Pru and Abigail in Spirit Riding Free; Poppy, Val and Holly in the new Trolls: TrollsTopia; Wenda in Where’s Waldo?; Leyla and Astrid in their respective Dragons series; a young Gloria in Madagascar: A Little Wild; and the female ensemble of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power with Adora and Glimmer in the lead. 3/21 WORLD SCREEN 85

“Across the board, we work to realize female characters that are multidimensional and have real agency,” says Kelly Kulchak, executive VP of current series at DreamWorks Animation. The studio doesn’t so much classify its shows as being only “for boys” or only “for girls,” Kulchak notes. “We build worlds and stories that have something for everyone. While Gabby’s Dollhouse might follow play patterns more traditionally associated with girls, there is a big world inside of the dollhouse filled with fun, eccentric characters that kids are falling in love with.”

“We work to realize female characters that are multidimensional and have real agency.” —Kelly Kulchak

Kulchak adds that empowering young women is of crucial importance in the kids’ programming business, and DreamWorks Animation is enthusiastically doing its part. “Kids’ television, and animation specifically, are the first places that kids are going to see themselves on-screen and begin to shape their worldview. We have a responsibility to make sure girls (and boys) see a world full of possibility, that what you have to say matters, that it’s okay to make mistakes, and so often, the things that make us feel different are the things that make us most special.” 86 WORLD SCREEN 3/21
