Help the farmer find his way through the maze to collect essentials he needs to grow healthy crops to feed his family.

Meet Iggy’s feathered friends who like to help as much as he does.

Foliage is the leafy parts of a tree or plant. Because I can change colour to blend in with foliage, it’s easy for me to hide. When you blend into the environment and can’t be easily seen, that is called camouflaging. On these two pages, colour all the leaves and flowers to help me hide. Then as you read through the following pages of this catalogue, see if you can find my hiding spots.

Hint: I am hiding in 5 different places. To learn more about Iggy and find out where he is hiding and other answers to games in this catalogue, visit: worldrenew.ca/iggy

Help hide Iggy Iguana!

Hi Friends!

My name is Iggy Iguana. I’m a reptile. That means I breathe air like you do, but I have scales instead of hair. I live in a part of the world where there is no winter. Imagine, I have never seen snow! But we do get lots of very warm, dry weather, so I like to go swimming. I can hold my breath underwater for up to 30 minutes!

I live in a country called Honduras—the second largest country in Central America. In my community, people always offer to help. I believe it makes God smile when we help each other. He wants everyone to get along and live in peace. When we help others, we share Jesus’ love with them. And where there is love, there can be peace. Can you think of ways you can help others?

I used to worry that because I am small and green, I can’t do much to help. But it doesn’t matter how big or small you are, or what colour you are ... Everyone can help share Jesus’ love.

How does an iguana help? As I move around the plants, I pick up seeds and drop them in different places. This is called seed dispersal. Seed dispersal is important because seeds have to compete for light, water, and soil nutrients. So, when I move them to an area where there are fewer seeds, it gives them a better chance to grow. It is so important for seeds to be allowed to grow, because seeds turn into the fruits and vegetables that people (and iguanas) eat!

Knowing that God calls us to help others, World Renew helps people who do not have enough to eat. When families like yours give to World Renew, you help provide training and tools to people who are struggling to grow food to eat. Because of the very dry weather in Honduras, families find it hard to grow enough. But World Renew teaches them about seeds that grow better in dry conditions, about ways to grow food with very little water, and more.

Help the farmer feed his family

The Bible tells us that when God made the world, he made people the stewards of the earth (Genesis 1). Do you know what that means? Yes, it means he wants us to take care of the trees, the soil, the oceans, the rivers, and all things that make up this world we live in. We can protect and care for the earth like God wants us to. We can also help make sure farmers can grow enough food for everyone—if we work together!

Some of the farmers in communities where World Renew works can’t afford to buy important things they need to care for the earth and grow healthy food. Below are some items that can help a farmer! Read about the items, then take a look at the maze and see if you can find the path the farmer needs to follow to find them.

Green manure isn’t just plain old compost! Some crops or plants can be grown to help make good soil and mixed in with greenbin contents to make powerful fertilizer. When the soil has enough moisture and nutrients, farmers can grow enough to feed their families AND earn money to pay for things like medicine. A jab

The jab planter saves the farmer time and energy so he can grow more to feed his family.

Just as God wants us to take care of the earth, he wants us to take care of our bodies. Eating properly helps us protect our health. A gift of a packet of vegetable seeds provides a family with spinach, beans, carrots, tomatoes, and other fresh veggies to make them healthy and strong.

FUNdraising

Did you have fun figuring out the maze and finding the items for the farmer? Turn this into a Help the Hungry fundraising activity? Ask your teacher, parent, or group leader to help you organize a scavenger hunt. Think of farm- or garden-related items for people to find in your community, like a shovel, hose, bag of soil, and so on. Find a sponsor who will donate a prize for the winner. Let people know via email or your church or school’s social media that, for a fee, they can enter to win the scavenger hunt and the prize!

Birds of a feather

Have you ever heard someone say, “Birds of a feather flock together”? It sounds a little silly! This saying tells us that people who have similar beliefs, interests, or behaviours tend to hang out together.

But do you think God wants us to only be friends with the people we agree with, or look like, or who want to do the same things we do? No! God wants everyone to get along, regardless of how different we are. He wants us to love everyone and help those who are struggling, so everyone can be well. God wants everyone to have joy!

On farms, ducks and chickens often live side by side. They both have feathers and, in communities where World Renew works, they both help families earn money. Families can sell duck and chicken eggs to earn money to pay for food, medicine, clothes, and more. Here are some “gifts of a feather” that we can give to help families struggling with hunger:

Prayer

Can you fill in the missing words to complete the prayer?

Once you fill in all the blanks, ask a friend, sibling, or one of your favourite grownups to say it with you.

Creator God,

Thank you for the ________ who grow fruits and vegetables. Please bless the ________ so that it is always rich with ________ for the plants. Allow the ________ to fall so the plants have enough moisture to grow. Let there be enough ________ too to help the crops grow strong and healthy. Father, please teach me to always be grateful for the food that you provide to nourish my ________. Help me to be mindful of not wasting food and open my eyes and heart to see ways I can help protect the ________. Amen

These are the words that are missing from the prayer, but they are not in the correct order: soil, farmers, body, sunshine, earth, nutrients, rain.

Chicken

$4.00 400483

Did you know that the colour of a chicken’s eggs is often the same as the colour of their earlobes? Chickens with red earlobes lay brown eggs, and those with white earlobes lay white eggs. But no matter the colour, eggs are delicious and nutritious.

Rooster

$18.00 400867

Eggs are a good source of protein for children and adults. Extra eggs can be sold for income to help families buy medicine or pay school tuition. With a rooster to fertilize the eggs, baby chicks will hatch and grow a whole flock!

Duck

$14.00 400574

Duck eggs are larger than the chicken eggs most of us in Canada eat, and they provide a family with good protein for better health. In fact, some duck eggs weigh more than the mother duck! Raising ducks helps families earn income all year. The profit they make from selling extra eggs can be used to buy necessary items like soap or shoes.

Chicken Coop

$12.00 400869

Farmers know that it’s extra important to keep poultry clean and dry. In tropical climates, the rainy season causes flooding that breeds diseases. A chicken coop helps farmers control bacteria, parasites, and illnesses.

Friends, that’s me, Iggy Iguana, in the picture with my pal, Ian. I am one handsome reptile! Ian lets me rest in his hands. I like hanging out with Ian. Ian’s mom, Belkis, participated in a World Renew Honduras food security program. World Renew Honduras partnered with a local training centre to teach people like Belkis tips and tricks to grow crops and protect the soil. They also learn about raising iguanas. Remember how iguanas help with seed dispersal? Once trained, farmers like Belkis return to their community and train five other people about what they learned, so more people have new knowledge that can help them to grow more food and earn more money.

What did you learn reading through this catalogue? Remember to share the knowledge and tell your friends about me, Iggy, and the work World Renew is doing to help hungry people around the world!

Note: In 2024, World Renew Canada anticipates raising $25 million in total revenue for its community development, disaster response, and peace and justice work, of which approximately 6% will be used for fundraising and 9% for administration.
