When he retired, Sid Vander Meulen not only downsized his belongings, he also downsized his career – literally. Sid went from selling real estate to making and selling birdhouses!
“I call my birdhouse sales, From Scraps to Goats,” Sid said. He sells the birdhouses he makes from recycled lumber at farmer’s markets, craft sales, and his church, Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Edmonton, Alberta. He donates his proceeds to buying goats from World Renew’s Gift Catalogue.
“I grew up with goats,” Sid said. “I was young during war, and goats provided milk when there was little else available. I dedicate my income from selling birdhouses to buying goats from the World Renew Gift Catalogue because it gives me a goal in helping others who don’t have enough to eat.”
Sid said that sometimes he follows up in email with customers who buy a birdhouse. “I messaged a guy who bought a birdhouse and let him know he was halfway to purchasing a goat – so he bought two more birdhouses – and I gave him a Gift Catalogue!” He added that the birdhouses and the goats he purchases from World Renew’s Gift Catalogue are even more meaningful because “They’re gifts that last.”

The VanderVeldes believe in sharing the blessings God has given them. As the owners of Veldelta Enterprises Ltd in Delta, BC, a property rental business, this family works hard to provide homes for families in Canada. But they also want to build a legacy of generosity that will last even longer.
So for Giving Tuesday last fall, they challenged the World Renew community to join them in providing food baskets for families in crisis. For every Emergency Food for a Month purchased, Veldelta matched the gift 1:1.
Thanks to this encouragement, 345 people participated in Giving Tuesday through World Renew and raised more than $690,000. And on top of that the donations were matched 4:1 thanks to Canadian Foodgrains Bank and a variety of funding sources. The amount raised through this initiative was enough to help feed as many as 46,104 families for a month. What an impact!
