I am from the island of Hispaniola, Haiti. The history is so understated that I don’t think all Haitians know the true value and depth of their roots. History says it is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but it is rich in food, color, culture, beauty and some of the most talented artisans I have seen.

Haiti was also the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean. History records that Christopher Columbus landed there and while he discovered Haiti, he had mistaken it for Asia. We must remember he was financed by the Spanish, bringing their customs and laws—which explains Haiti’s connection to both Spanish and French cultures.

MAGGUY DURCE

It is my love for history and my cultural roots that inspired this issue. As a teen I recall my countless trips to Puerto Rico and luxurious vacations in Old San Juan, its various night life, great beaches and spectacular food.

There were also numerous trips to Mexico that shaped my love for their country—enjoying the shopping, food, drinks and art. These and so much more contributed well into my second marriage to a man who is Mexican-Irish. It served as a reintroduction to the Mexican culture which impacted me in a completely different way... the history and the people made me fall deeply in love with the culture.

Cartagena, Colombia continues to feed my curiosity and passion for all things Latin. Its rich history raised my curiosity specifically because of the deep African roots that lie within its history that shaped my people, reminding me how much Africa–Africans are very much a part of this international culture.

Family Values Words by Marcello Ortiz

Recently, I overheard a fascinating conversation on a NYC subway. Two women were discussing, the Latino man’s devotion to his family. I have been haunted by their conversation. What exactly, is the driving force that makes us Latin men so committed to our families? Why do we do and act the way we do with them and for them? For 55 years my parents, stood together, and stayed together to raise us. The Latin family, historically, has a strong commitment to “Familia.”

Our family values were imparted long ago but is still relevant today. Most Latin men I know, will quote a lot of their parents’ beliefs and core values. We often hate to admit that we have turned into what our parents were shaping.

As a child, you don’t always understand the lesson – until we became men.

We were taught how to conduct ourselves wherever we went and to respect all family, friends and elders. We had to sit properly, speak when addressed, and answer with Ma’am or Sir. It’s understood that our elders are entitled to our respect after all of their struggles, hardships, hard work and their place in the hierarchy and history.

We knew never to talk back, no matter if they were right or wrong. To do so was disrespectful. Today’s children aren’t demonstrating what they are being taught. Too many have taken on the negativity of the world and treat their parents so disrespectfully without any consequences.

The Latin male’s family unit consisted of your dad, the provider and protector of the family. He was in a small way seen as the “ultimate disciplinarian.” And we heard far too often, “I’m telling your father about this” and we would cringe at those words and it did not include a time-out. Today, that would classify as child-abuse. Perhaps we have reached a point where there are so many worldly issues that families must have intervention. But, at some point we must consider whether “spare the rod, spoil the child” could change a few disrespectful children.

We know that the world has changed tremendously. But, what hasn’t really changed is the authentic love that we have for our families: to be the best they can be and walk with respect, peace and the ability to maintain an honor for our family’s name.

We have invested a plethora of time and resources identifying the most delicate fragrances that will delight the most sensitive nose and applaud the perfumer’s prowess. I love fragrances, preferably light, and wispy, something soft that barely leaves a trace when I exit a room. We got married in Tulum, Mexico at Akin Beach. We picked Tulum because our friends had a small beautiful beachside wedding there and it was the first place we vacationed together outside of the country. We didn’t want anyone wearing any shoes. When guests arrived they were instructed to leave their shoes. Something about feeling the sand between your feet connects one to the beauty of nature.

weekends. One weekend over the winter, a bunch of the guys went up there to snowboard. After a tiring all day excursion (it was my first time snowboarding) we went back to the house for dinner, but not until Christine's father had us carry a heavy stove all the way from bottom of hill up to the house in a foot of snow! I cut my hand carrying it and it was then back at the house, that I saw Christine for the first time. She came down the stairs with her long flowing hair and band aids in hand and she patched me up.

WHERE DID YOU GO ON YOUR HONEYMOON?

We decided that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity so we took advantage of the time we had. We decided not to leave for the honeymoon for two months. We went to Spain (Madrid and Marbella), Greece (Santorini) and finished off in Turkey (Istanbul).

There is a beautiful island called Isa de Vieques, which is one of the off-shore island municipalities of Puerto Rico, seven miles off the east coast. I was amazed how fond I became of this 21-mile-long island, which is home to 40 undeveloped beaches in the Caribbean.

Twelve years ago, the United States Navy was forced to stop using this oasis as a bombing range and testing ground. The unity of the islanders and other voices from beyond their shores led to protest and massive world pressure until the Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy acquiesced and returned the island to its citizens. Amazingly now, Vieques is the largest national wildlife refuge and reserve and some of the top beaches in the Caribbean. It is also home to the brightest bioluminescent bay, one of only seven remaining in the world. And, since it is part of the United States, you won’t need a passport! Of course, there are a myriad of hotels to suit your style and budget. Now, Vieques has become an important wedding destination.

Gabriele was born and raised in Oyster Bay Cove, NY. She has a father, an older sister, and a twin sister. She had a beautiful and loving mother who passed away. Gabriele went to the University of Maryland where she got a M.Ed in special education and met Jared there. She now works as a special education teacher in Maryland, where she lives with Jared permanently. Jared and Gaby are proud parents to a very sweet lab/terrier mix, Griff.

Jared was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. He has two warm, loving parents, and two sisters who live in Israel.

He is an uncle to six nephews and one niece. He went to the University of Maryland where he studied psychology.

He moved out to Maryland permanently in 2013 to start SPIRIT Club, a fitness service and center providing fitness and health (both physical and mental) opportunities for all people, primarily those with disabilities. In 2015 he founded the SPIRIT Club foundation, a non-profit helping to improve the health of people with disabilities.

So I was thrilled when Kassandra Castillo-Cruz, one of the former Vieques Youth Leadership Initiative’s former youth leaders, was recently married. I met this beautiful young girl in the 90’s, when her journey was like so many young people on this small island, still raw from the scars of the United States Navy’s presence, yet, filled with dreams of becoming a model, living in New York, going to college, seeing the world, and one day becoming the wife of a man who truly loved her.

Her love story began about four years ago, when a group of friends decided to meet up and two strangers became best buddies. After several years, Kassandra knew that Daniel Ramirez-Yunqué was a wonderful change of pace with his quick wit and infectious smile. After roughly four years of dating, college, modeling and living in New York, and Daniel becoming an investment banker, the wedding proposal was during a picnic in the park at sunset.

Their ceremony & reception were held in San Juan, Puerto Rico at the Casa de España, the after party in La Factoria, and their honeymoon in Athens, Greece at the New Hotel –which is the first hotel project of award winning designer duo, Fernando and Humberto Campana.

Celebrity Wedding at his big desk and at least learn a little something about him… Photos of him and his son were wonderful and really spoke volumes about him. After a couple of days making herself at home, Tyese unintentionally spilled coffee all over his desk – of course that began the story as he walked into his office and she had to explain what exactly she was doing.

Armed with a beautiful smile and quick wit, Ty’s life was forever changed, or so she thought. They became fast friends and while she was in town they had a ball. When the project was over and it was time for her to go home, what she thought was going to be a lasting friendship came suddenly to a halt. She knew Samson had her number but the phone never rang from his number.

he lovely couple, TyTy was a Real Bride Real Beauty and won an incredible renewal of their vows with an extraordinary beautiful outdoor wedding at sunset on Baiting Hollow Farm Vineyard and Horse Rescue. The bride wore legendary Japanese Yumi Katsura. The groom wore Masahiro Soga tuxedos, bridesmaids wore custom design skirts and Obi, inspired by Sarah Jessica Parker, Sex in The City by Hanayome by Hiroko Tashiro who flew in from Japan with the wedding dress and appointments for the bridesmaids. The most exquisite flowers adorned the palatial vineyard explosions of roses, hydrangeas, and extraordinary greens by MagnaFlora.

Then almost a year later, un-expectantly on a Saturday night, her phone rang and Styles’ name showed up on her phone. Ty just looked at the phone trying to decide whether to answer or not. She decided she would answer and the first thing he said was, “I had the wrong number.” They laughed and she learned he was moving to her hometown in New Jersey.

The grounds on Baiting Hollow provide the perfect backdrop in the rows of extraordinary grapes and white tenting covered the dining and dancing areas. The couple was so delightful and appreciative that we just wanted to learn a little more about what was behind their beautiful smiles and warm personalities.

It seemed like only yesterday, that they made the commitment to marry seven years ago and to this day there are several things that are important in their marriage: honesty, laughter – they love to joke with one another, they are seriously Best Friends and they come first, before anybody, and communication.

The couple was so delightful and appreciative that we just wanted to learn a little more about what was behind their beautiful smiles and warm personalities.

When asked about their goals as a couple, their response – to stay in love and stay married; being financially literate; curbing the spending habits, develop a strategic plan; building a family empire for their children; always do things to continue to look forward to seeing each other; find ways to keep each other interested.

It seems that while Tyese (Ty) was working on a massive project at BET, Samson Styles was in LA for the BET Awards. So, since Samson was away, Tyese decided to sit

It was sweet to hear Samson talk about how important it was that he looked forward to coming home and that one of the beautiful experiences that makes him so very happy is “for his wife to awaken with a beautiful smile on her face and no matter what happens during the day, he just remembers her morning smile and it makes his day.”

These two lovebirds had me going, so I wondered when did she know he was the one. Ty said, “The day he finally called and came over. She knew it because she felt like she knew him forever and she was at peace.” Their romantic relationship is very special, they can finish one another’s sentences, she/they know when something is wrong with the other before even speaking with each other. According to Ty they have a beautifully blended family of six, ranging in age from 17 years old to 23 years old and they are grandparents.

They are committed to their community and support programs that assist and empower foster children and those that are adopted; as well as programs that support re-entry and ex-felon resources that assist with empowerment of each individual including housing and education.

When I asked any last words or food for thought, Ty said, “Be honest in everything and communicate always.”

Samson was very clear, “husbands and wives - Don’t stop having sex and be forthcoming about what you want and need.”

We are excited for this lovely couple and wish them many wonderful years filled with all the blessing that the universe can muster – filled with love and immeasurable blessings.

est friends met more than 19 years ago and fate determined that the timing for any type of relationship was one that needed assistance to break an unspoken barrier that two best friends never crossed. That is until one fateful evening when Michael Jai White’s medication caused a near fatal reaction. And out of all the excitement and fears in this emergency, thinking he was about to die, Michael Jai White knew that he had to have the presence of mind to call his BFF Gillian Waters. Not for just any call, but one to profess his love, “Upon thinking I was going to die, I realized one of the calls I had to make was to her to profess the fact that I felt like I’ve always been in love with her,” he explained.

And, much to his surprise he learned the feeling was mutual.

These two are truly best friends. They talk every day, never

had an argument, they enjoy laughing and having fun, and not having to explain anything, ever. They trust one another implicitly, which is their guiding star. There is something special about how they move in lockstep in thoughts, beliefs and while they may differ in opinions, the respect they have for one another and each other’s opinions is powerful. They, clearly, are comfortable being together, yet, maintaining their individuality.

Gillian is from California and looks like the beautiful California girls; while she wasn’t a tom-boy, she certainly loved the outdoors and the balance between that and dolls. Today, she still loves to read and extreme sports – sky diving, cave diving and anything else with an adrenalin rush, including cooking

Michael Jai grew up in Brooklyn, NY and Bridgeport, CT within a community that had the feeling of Boys in the Hood. He quickly noted that his beginning makes him appreciate where and what guided him out of that maze. He saw himself living differently and Martial Arts became a way of life and was the discipline he needed to guide him into his ultimate success.

The beauty of this couple is they both love to give back and are very involved in their community. They do most things together and are very comfortable with one another and their children. Actually, one of the deciding factors to ultimately get married was that they wanted to demonstrate to their children that this type of love needed to be consummated with marriage.

As a matter of fact they are both starring in the movie, Never Back Down 3, which was being shot in Thailand, when they decided to get married there after completing the new Sony Pictures film. They enjoyed their trip and the country so much, Gillian and Michael thought it was a great idea to have a Thai-style wedding, which included a line of exotic Thai dancers, drummers, and included being escorted down the aisle by a procession of elephants, with a Thai water blessing, after which the vows and ceremony were held on the estate’s riverfront lotus pond. They were excited that they had “their

children witness the union, which was wonderful...we all will have the memory of this experience forever! I have never been happier!”

The bride designed her own wedding dress with a local designer in Bangkok, which was white and gold Thai silk in traditional Thai design, with an asymmetrical top and mermaid bottom.

Following the ceremony, guests feasted on a wedding dinner of pad thai with prawns, crab fried rice, curried chicken satay, Thai fruits and sticky sweet rice with mango and coconut milk.

The wedding cake was a three-tiered creation from Bangkok bakery Coffee Beans By Dao. The night ended with a fireworks show on the river.

They honeymooned on the Indian Ocean in Krabi Province, and when the couple returns, planning will begin for a California reception for the rest of their family and friends later this year.

I asked the couple what are three words that you would say to couples to consider prior to marriage?

Gillian, “Be Best Friends.” And Michael, “Live, Love, Laugh.”

There you have it, a love that was nurtured and kindled throughout years of living and laughing – which only needed one special word that surpasses all understanding, Love!

right colors, bold prints and flowing fabrics comprise the line of this self-taught Latin American-born designer. As a first generation Mexican who’s also the youngest of 11 children he grew up in a heavily Latin influenced home. As a child, he loved art and creating things. He was involved in dancing, theater (drama), painting and drawing. His mother even taught him how to sew and with that fervor for creation, Galindo decided to set his heart and mind on designing. This, coupled with his Latin background, became the catalyst for his soon-to-be designs. As I had the pleasure of interviewing Galindo, I got the absolute delight of knowing the creative genius behind his work, as well as his key inspirations and his thoughts on the bridal market.

As we chatted more about his fashion endeavors, the topic of the bridal market came about. Galindo believes that the bridal market is very special in the sense that it’s personal and great designs are involved in the market. He does admit that it can be very challenging as well depending on the particular bride, but if it’s someone you’re close to, it can be a very fun experience, admitting that he actually designed his mother’s 25th anniversary gown. His recommendation for couples planning their wedding would be to “make sure you want to get married because it is a lifetime commitment” and to “make sure it’s your day and it’s how you want it, don’t let family get in the way or other people’s opinions and make sure it’s whatever you want for that very special day.”

When asked who he would design a wedding dress for if given the chance, he admitted that it was a difficult question, but if given the chance remarked that it would have to probably be someone very special to him. On the pop culture end, he states “everyone that I would want to design for got married already, I don’t know probably for Jennifer Lopez’s fifth wedding.” With a last chuckle at his final statement, our short but sweet interview came to an end. After chatting with the man behind the clothes himself, I’ve come to see that his humble beginnings and strong Latin influences transposed into his line paints a dynamic image of a man who is both talented and genuine.

Galindo explains that his line CZAR by Cesar Galindo utilizes Latin inspired shades, prints and silhouettes, making use of vibrant colors and hues. His creative process begins with textiles, which are where he draws his inspiration from. He believes that every piece of cloth tells a story through its color and from that, he goes into draping, followed by production. His artistic outlook and state of mind are the key elements of the details that make not only his work, but other brands flourish as well. Galindo has worked with big name brands such as Calvin Klein, GO by Gottex and L.A.M.B by Gwen Stefani; lines that feature designs very different from his own line. Galindo explained to me that he believes that it is the responsibility of the designer to get into the mindset and creative direction of the brand and interpret it as such, so that in turn, the final product is something that is catered to that brand specifically.

Sean Watters New York based photographer, Sean was born in Louisville, Kentucky. In his early twenties, Sean moved to NYC on a dance scholarship to The Mary Anthony Modern Dance School in the East Village. After dancing from show to show for several years, on the road is where Sean picked up his first camera to document his travels as a gypsy. After receiving positive feedback about his photography skills, Sean decided to take some classes at the International School of Photography where he further honed his skills. From there his interest went from shooting food relief programs for Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti program to his now signature fashion portraits.

Known for his work shooting men’s fashion, Sean Watters’ photographs combine movement with a provocative edge, a look that has led to his success. Imagine that it’s 2045, your 30th wedding anniversary. Your only child is hosting a dinner in your honor and, unbeknownst to him, you’ll be celebrating by giving him a six-figure check to help kick start his wealth-building efforts.

What will he do with the money? Start a business? Buy a house?

Buy stocks and or bonds?

It doesn’t matter. You’re just happy to be able to give him the money.

This opportunity was born in 2015 when you read an article that showed you how making decisions, like spending $2,000 less on your wedding and investing the money in assets that gained 5% annually (or more) that could help you build wealth painlessly. It was good advice. That first $2,000 you saved is now worth more than $8,600. Over the years, you made choices like investing tax refunds, buying used cars in cash instead of leasing new ones, and saving, at least, 30% of all raises.

After the party, you give your son his check and he says “Thanks, Mom and Dad! I’m going to pay a few bills, buy a new car, and rent a big apartment in Richville Estates!” You feel faint and ask yourself, where did we go wrong?

Although this scenario is fictional, it happens often-- even to financially savvy parents. According to several studies, less than half of money inherited (or received as a gift) is saved or invested. Why? Because the people receiving the gifts didn’t know how to build wealth. Monetary gifts + financial illiteracy = a spending spree. Monetary gifts + financial education = a legacy.

Below are experiences that can make your children financially literate and, potentially, wealthy.

Managing an Allowance — Give your kids a weekly or biweekly allowance. Don’t scold them when they make mistakes like spending 100% of their allowance on a single toy. Teach them how to make more prudent choices.

Budgeting — Teach your children to create budgets for household groceries, school trips, and special events like birthday parties. By age 15 or so, have them create a monthly budget for your household. A year before they leave home, have them create budget for college and/or their first living experience on their own.

Learning how money is made — Often children are only aware of the professions they see regularly (e.g., their parent’s professions, teachers). Talk to them about the wide variety of careers available to them. When your children show interest in a career, introduce them to people working in that field. Also talk to them about earning money through building businesses and making investments in stocks, bonds, and real estate. You don’t need to have firsthand experience in each of the investments. A quick Google or How-to book from the library will help you fill in the blanks.

Purchasing assets — Include your children in every step of buying an asset, like a home or stocks. Let them join you, even for a few minutes, in meetings with your banker, lawyer, real estate agent, and brokers. Even if they don’t understand the whole process, they will begin to see buying assets as a normal part of adulthood.

As a result, they’ll be more likely to buy assets when they reach adulthood.

John Nevado’s company, Nevado Roses, has been specializing in fresh, Ecuador-imported roses since 1965. Nevado also created an international online magazine, I Love Roses (iloveroses.com), for other florists and flower enthusiasts.

The magazine posts everything from DIY crafts and tutorials, planning floral arrangements for your wedding, and making rose martini cocktails.

“Nevado Roses is one of the most prestigious rose-growers in the world,” John explains. “There are a couple of hundred [others] around the world, but we aim for the ultra-high end so we do only rose varieties that really appeal to the high end and mainly bridal work. We are a Spanish extraction, but we established our company some 20 years ago in Ecuador of Latin America. We produce for the world market and the U.S. is one of our strongest markets.”

Q: Why do you specialize in just roses?

A: Roses are the queens of flowers. You know, when a bride dreams of her wedding bouquet, it often involves roses of some kind. From a business perspective, it’s the most profitable flower you can grow and we have extensive knowledge since the early 60s in the rose field.

Q: What would you say is your best-selling rose out of all of them?

A: It’s been, for a couple of years, the garden type rose.

I think almost every bridal bouquet you see involves a garden rose.

Q: What goes into dying process of the roses? From start to finish, how does that work?

A: We’re the biggest in the world in dying roses. For a wedding, if you have a logo or a color theme chosen then you can carry that out in the specific colors. We even work in Pantone colors for designers.

Q: With the magazine and everything that you’ve posted on the website, what inspired you to branch out from floral arrangements?

A: I would like the magazine to be a place where you can go for beautiful photography, primarily, and then tips and tricks on how to deal with roses. It will ultimately involve anything rose. And I will sell, so I already sell flowers online and I will start selling other products.

Q: So you mentioned before you have a couple different shops. Where would you say is your most popular shop?

A: I have shops in Latin America. The shop that does the best is in the international airport of Quito [Mariscal Sucre International Airport] in Ecuador because a lot of tourists come through—200,000 tourists come through that airport—and they know that Ecuador is a strong producer of roses so a lot of people buy roses and bring them with them.

Q: What would you say is most unique about your services and your company as opposed to competitors?

A: It is stellar quality, but then service and reliability.

And we have the full. I mean, if you want anything roses, we have 70 different colors, plus the tinted ones so it’s infinite.

love how every ethnic group has their own style and regal beauty. For many of the Latin women I have met, one of their statement features is their beautiful hair. Their history is rooted in between the coastal countries of Africa, South America and the Caribbean. The richness of these cultures is expressed through the evolution of their hair texture.

Many Latin brides have the luxury of an extraordinary range for their tresses. The richness and complexity of the Latin bride’s hair extends into the full range of beautiful hair textures, starting from super straight to fabulously kinky with a cross section everything in between. Stellar style and gorgeous hairstyles go hand in hand.

THE LOOK OF THE LATIN BRIDE IN FULL COLOR Because of the full range of hair textures the bride style will vary from one gorgeous look to another. There is one common thread, however, and that’s color, color and more color.

FAIR COMPLEXION Go Dark – Choose colors that will complement your skin, your eyes and your facial features. Fair skin and dark hair complement each other. Choose from dark brown tones to black hair color. Black hair color works best, especially for people with dark eyes. It helps to blend the overall look.

Go Blonde – Blonde and fair skin match perfectly together.

There are a variety of blonde tones to choose from. Blonde enhances your eyes and your skin. Go for warm tones of blonde. Avoid golden, sandy and strawberry blonde. This option does, however, work well with blue eyes.

Go Red – What a perfect match, redheads and fair skin. The pale complexion and warm tones are most complimentary with green eyes. The redness of the hair and the fair complexion help highlight the eyes. Both light red or vivid red hair will work.

OLIVE COMPLEXION Go Cool Hair – A true olive skin color is naturally cool in tone; choose a cool hair color that will bring out the best features of your complexion. We love these shades for a cool olive skin tone: blue black, ash brown, violet shades, burgundy, and dark copper colors.

Go Warm Hair – Picks up and enhances the golden, yellow undertones of olive complexions. Highlights add visual interest. Be careful going totally blond it might not work with olive skin. Note: darker shades of blond with dark brown highlights or brown hair color with dark blonde highlights.

DARK COMPLEXION Go Blonde – A full head of blonde color will make the most impact. When it comes to the right hue, choose warm blondes often described as caramel, toffee or honey-inspired make great choices.

Go Brunette – Brunette may be the lightest, if your hair is naturally black. The brunettes that work well with a dark skin tone include mocha, auburn browns, golden browns, ash browns and dark or light browns.

Go Red Bright – Cherry reds, subtle dark auburn reds, within that spectrum, are great choices for dark skin. Reminder: red can fade quickly. For red you may need to go through a lightening process for the right hue. And depending on your current hair color you go through a lightening process, or just use red highlights.

Dry your hair with a diffuser. Make sure to keep your dryer on a cool setting, don’t apply too much heat. If you can, let your hair air-dry.

2. Girls with curly or coarse hair, apply styling cream immediately after washing hair. If you want to keep your natural texture, apply it right after you wash your hair and dry it with a diffuser. This creates a protective layer against frizz.

3. In hot temperatures use a deep-conditioning treatment once a week to battle humidity. Be certain you use deep conditioners, hair masks, and oil-infused works for eliminating frizz.

4. Use a protein-infused conditioner. These types of conditioners help repair dry, damaged hair and protect it from humidity at the same time.

5. Don’t wash your hair more than twice a week if you have thick, curly, or coarse hair.

Too much washing strips the hair of its natural oils, which can make it dry and frizzy.

If your hair gets too oily, you can substitute regular shampoo for a dry shampoo.

6. Don’t go for blunt haircuts. When your hair is cut evenly all around, it creates volume at the bottom, especially when it comes to curly, thick, or coarse hair. Go for a medium to long cut with layers. Your layers should start around your lip and gradually angle back. Try long-layered cuts like Shakira’s and J.Lo’s.

7. Comb your hair while in the shower—never while it’s dry.

Applying a dry brush against dry hair can create fullness and puffiness that you wouldn’t want in the summer. Brush your hair using a wide-toothed comb in the shower while it’s conditioned, then rinse. If you need to untangle it a bit while it’s dry, try combing through it with your fingers.

8. Don’t towel-dry your hair. This actually causes more frizz.

Instead, squeeze excess water out and allow it to air-dry or use a diffuser.

9. Give your hair a rest from the day-to-day styling. Wear loose topknots, buns and ponytails. This gives your hair a rest from daily styling.

10. Treat your hair well. Tender love and care goes a long way in maintaining healthy hair.

When it comes to weddings, bridal registry is huge. But behind every bridal registry piece is an artist with a story and Beatriz Ball is no exception. In the 60s, Cuba was taken over by Communism regime and eventually Ball was forced to flee her homeland to Mexico. There she became close friends with two sisters whose father was the head of an important metalwork company, as silver was abundant at the time and many Mexican artisans were using the metal to their advantage. This is where her career began.

“I believe we’re the best in the world. Our products are made like no one else’s,” she says in a humble but poised manner.

“Everything is made by hand one at a time by a group of polishers we cultivated that polish like no one else; we do it the way the Greeks and Romans did. The surface and shine is unique.”

The most important thing that Ball wants customers to know about her and her collections is the story of the handmade.

“So many tell you it’s handmade and it’s not. The story of the handmade is the story behind our pieces. The quality we

As for brides and bridal registry, Ball says they are the core of the business and that “brides love that they don’t have to polish and that our pieces are decorative and practical. It has to be multifunctional and beautiful, glamorous and special.”

“It’s fantastic and a courageous thing to do. Cuban people suffered tremendously but they’re wonderful people and it really is a special place.”

Because the industry was successful, many smaller “Mom and Pop” shops were available for her to buy from to start her own pieces. Marvelous and Mysterious MANTILLA

edding day attire has evolved in so many ways, but one component of the bride’s trousseau that has withstood the test of time is the wearing of a veil. The veiling of the bride has storied origins in many cultures. The ancient Romans veiled brides in red scarves to scare off potential evil spirits. The veil also served as a method of shielding the bride’s face from her future husband, especially in the cases of arranged marriages. In many religions it is seen as a symbol of reverence for the bride to cover her head. The Victorians turned that reverence into a status symbol and the weight, length and quality of the veil was a sign of the bride’s status. Royal brides had the longest veils and the longest trains. Eventually the meaning behind the veil transformed as weddings evolved into religious ceremonies. The veil came to symbolize modesty and obedience. When white wedding dresses were worn to symbolize chastity, the white veil was donned to match and the flowing white veil became a sign of virginity. The groom’s lifting the veil signifies his acceptance of the bride. In modern times the tradition has become more of a finishing touch on the bridal fashion ensemble, and one age old tradition has been emerging on the bridal runways around the globe — the marvelous and mysterious mantilla.

Historically, lace mantilla veils were more often of black lace instead of being white. The mantilla originated in the warmer climates of Spain during the 1700s. Lace versions were chic through the 17th and 18th centuries and you can find them in portraits by artists Velazquez and Goya. They were originally worn by women of the Andalusia region of Spain, perhaps attributed to some Arab influence in the origin of their use, as Spain had many Arabian visitors.

Today there are three types of mantilla, each distinguished by a different kind of lace fabric or motif.

The Blonda Lace variety is made from rich silk tulle and laces, usually with a floral motif.

The Full Lace Mantillas which are heavily embroidered with a variety of flora and fauna designs.

The Fashion Bridal Mantillas made from white or ivory tulle are embroidered with reembroidered lace motifs or lined with lace edging.

Wearing a Spanish inspired mantilla will certainly bring a sense of Latin drama and may even transform your nuptial aisle into a glamorous runway, perhaps warding off a few evil spirits here and there - yet still manage to bring world charm to your modern wedding!

During this time period, the women wore mantilla veils only during special occasions. By the 19th century, Queen Isabel II encouraged wearing the mantilla. However, following the death of Isabel the II, the mantilla's popularity began to decline. In modern times, it is worn primarily at weddings, bullfights, and during the week before Easter.

In keeping with tradition, some Catholic women still wear mantillas to church. As Spain explored and brought its cultural ways to South and Central America, so came the mantilla veil to Latin America, the Caribbean and North America.

Mantillas are large, oval-shaped pieces of fabric. Defined, the mantilla is usually cut on a circle of lace or tulle and bordered with lace trim around the edges. To wear one, a woman drapes the fabric over her head and fastens it to her hair using a pin. The resulting silhouette is sleek and straight. The traditional mantilla, originating as the Spanish mantilla, is oval shaped and worn at the top of the head, held onto the head with pins or attached to a head piece. any men don’t think about hair below the chin requiring attention. And many women don’t care one way or the other.

However, some do care and your lack of attention on these vital areas can be a deal breaker for those who have discerning tastes.

There are three hair areas that many ladies believe need grooming: the chest, the back and in between your legs. We might also add there were several women who would like the hair under your arms removed or at least managed. But that is for you two to decide.

The Chest – Trim your chest dry, going in the direction of the grain and make sure to go all the way down. Make certain you have an excellent body lotion to prevent dryness and redness. Also, be sure to leave a little hair on your chest.

The Back/shoulders - From the ladies we spoke to, back and shoulder hair is not sexy. So find a good Men’s Grooming house for a waxing or trimming whatever works for you.

The In-Between Your Legs – You must be ready for this section – first put on your swim trunks… and all of that hair must go that is outside of the suit.

Things You Will Need • Body wash • Towel • Mirror • Comb • Clipper Oil • Electric Shaver with lever 1. Take a shower and use the body wash to properly clean all pubic hair you want shave. Dry yourself thoroughly.

2. Detangle hair-using a comb. Yes, we are assuming worst case scenario.

3. Make sure that the clippers are properly lubricated. This prevents the clipper from pulling the hair and causing in-growing hairs and ensure a smooth shave.

4. Adjust the lever on clipper by pulling the lever all the way back. At this level the clipper will cut the hair low but not bald. It will also prevent you from getting cut.

5. Turn the clipper on and shave hair in the direction in which the hair grown. Use smooth down motion until the hair is cut to the desire length. Repeat this process until hair is all cut.

6. This part requires the most concentration.

In order to properly shave the testicles, the skin needs to be pulled. This ensures that the clippers glide smoothly over the skin without getting stuck.

7. A much closer shave can be achieved by adjusting the lever forward and cutting the hair against the direction in which it grows.

8. Shower again and rinse all excess hair off private area and dry thoroughly.

A small amount of Gold Bond Medicated Powder Spray can be applied to testicles to ensure that you stay dry and comfortable all day. And while this all sounds like the most painful idea ever, consider how happy you will be with your mate who finds grooming a necessity.

f course it is impossible to not make some generalizations when deciding upon which wines to choose. But here we have a brief list to make the decision making process a little easier for you and of course make it seem to your guests that you really know your wines; for the right reasons of course!

For absolute certainty, we recommend you rely on your own tastes above and beyond our recommendations; it is after all, when all is said and done, your wedding meal.

It is also worth remembering that most of your guests won’t know the subtle differences, they just need something tasty to help with small talk to people.

We recently had the pleasure of experiencing SIMI, each drop tasted beautiful and their wines will definitely have your wedding meal covered.

Beef and lamb: Usually a full-bodied red, such as a Shiraz or cabernet/shiraz blend. Suitable wines include: Barbera, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel. However, if it’s asparagus alone, a grassy Sauvignon Blanc would be a sensible choice.

Chicken: White wine is the usual pick. For grilled or roast chicken, try a Chardonnay. For chicken cooked in a rich sauce, try a Shiraz or a medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon.

Fish and Seafood: Grilled firm-flesh fish matches well with Chardonnay or an aged Semillon, while a hearty fish stew is excellent accompanied by Pinot Noir. For flaky fish, choose a dry Riesling or a Chardonnay.

Spicy: Choose Riesling or a sweet Gewürztraminer if your meal is spicy. The sweetness of these wines can be drunk quickly to offset the spiciness of the food. Avoid adding a Chardonnay to spicy food, as it will taste bitter.

Game: Choose a spicy red, like Sangiovese or Shiraz, for game such as venison, bison, or kangaroo.

Tomato (acidic) based meals: Serve Barbera, Sangiovese, or Zinfandel with tomato-based meals, like spaghetti and pizza.

Duck or Quail: Try a Pinot Noir or a Shiraz.

Cheese: Full-bodied wines go well with hard cheese, such as a Shiraz with cheddar cheese. Soft cheese partners well with dry Riesling, Marsanne, or Viognier. Sweet wine is a good match for blue cheese.

Dessert: Sweet wines are a good choice, provided that the dessert is not as sweet as the wine.

A

s an Ethiopian American, I was already familiar with Cuban history and the relationship with Africa and had always dreamed of making the trip to the neighboring island. As many times as I dreamed about my first trip to Cuba, I was not prepared for the amazing welcome and recognition I received in Cuba. People would immediately recognize me as an Ethiopian because either they went to school with someone from Ethiopia or either they or their parents were in Ethiopia decades ago fighting longside Ethiopian soldiers. Those who did not have the Ethiopia connection would automatically assume I am Cuban until I start speaking which heightened the sense of instant belonging I felt during my short stay in Cuba. So many shared their experience in not only Ethiopia but also other African countries such as Angola which made me realize the extent of their sacrifice. I now have a renewed sense of respect for the Cuban people.

Because of its history and location, Cuba exhibits a mixture of Latin and Caribbean traits while maintaining some unique characteristcs of its own. Similar to Latin and Caribbean cultures, young girls celebrate their 15th birthday with lavish quinceañera parties and I was lucky enough to see an elaborate quinceañera photoshoot

in Viñales, complete with makeup, wardrobe change, etc. Like most Caribbean countries, Cuba also has its carnival which I did not get to actually see but I witnessed the floats being built a week before. Cuba’s African roots and modern day African connections make the country a unique place to explore.

People and Culture No tourist hustling, the people are curious but polite and ready to engage in a friendly conversation. There is no shortage of beautiful hotels but for those who want to get a feel for the Cuban culture, I strongly recommend staying in a casa particular, which is the equivalent of an Airbnb stay.

Judging by the numerous impromptu dancing and singing I witnessed in various places in and around Havana, it is safe to assume music is ingrained in the Cuban culture.

Streets are fairly clean and public spaces are very well maintained. Even the street dogs and cats looked like they were taken care of. Whether you are noticing the old landmark buildings protected by the UNESCO World Heritage site designation or the more modern buildings and public spaces, Havana has amazing architecture. From the barrio chino (Chinatown) devoid of Chinese people, the unforgettable old Havana to the various museums, statues and parks, there is a lot to see.

Beyond the excitement of feeling like you are being transported in a 1950s time capsule, Cuba has so much to offer to honeymooners looking for an affordable and memorable vacation, and cultural travellers alike looking to experience Cuban culture. For entrepreneurs like myself, Cuba promises great investment potential whether it is in the real estate market or in business services. As a conference producer and event curator, I see a lot of potential business opportunities once the embargo is lifted. With the considerable easing of the sanctions and the historical developments this month, I can’t help but dream of the time when all diplomatic ties will be completely restored so more people can get to experience this beautiful country.

ontauk is located on the eastern end of the Long Island shore where, on a clear day, you can see Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York. European settlers from Connecticut came and purchased land from the Montaukett tribe, who had been friendly with the buyer, Lord Gardiner. Gardiner was granted permission to purchase and it was established as East Hampton in 1639. The settlers kept cattle, making Montauk home of the first cattle ranch in the country. Houses were built in the 1740s and in 1792, George Washington authorized construction of the Montauk Lighthouse, which is still in use today and is the fourth lighthouse to be made in the country.

Q: What would you say is your most popular item and what should a bride and groom definitely put on their list?

RG: We’re definitely known for our china collection. We have, I’m told, one of the largest collections people see in the city, in New York, sometimes even in a more vast area than that.

Q: If their wedding is—say—in California, how easy is it for the guests to purchase and then ship?

RG: So the guests can buy online, they can buy over the phone, or they can come to the store. As far as shipping, most couples wait until after the wedding and they come back to us after the wedding and look at how much credit they’ve gotten from all of their gifts and then just place one large order with that credit. And with that being so, they just get one large shipment sent.

Q: Have you gotten a good sense of your demographic? Are you trying to appeal to the younger brides or the grandmothers of the young brides?

RG: It almost astounds me sometimes how all over the place it is. We’re also reaching out to older couples, we’re reaching out to same sex couples. When people are getting married, everybody wants a registry and we’re just super excited to be able to provide that service for anyone.

Q: As far as registries, what’s the process for bridesto-be? When do you suggest they start registering?

RG: We definitely suggest they start registering before they send out their save the dates, just because the moment those go out, even if people aren’t going to be giving them a gift yet, at that point they’re starting to look to see what options they have when they do decide to get a gift for them. And then, we start it out with an appointment where we work with the bride and groom for usually about two hours and walk them through the entire process.

Q: Are there any other things about registries or Scully & Scully that brides or just plain old customers should know before coming in?

RG: I would definitely say for one, try to be considerate of your guests. Guests will not only want to get something within their price range, but get something that appeals to them. So since a registry really is just a wish list, I always suggest to my couples to put on everything that they want and not really limit themselves. Register for things that you’re going to want, that you’re going to use, and that you’re going to need.
