Both in fairy tales and the wedding industry, grooms play second fiddle to the bride. Everything from the proposal to the dress, and even her smallest accessory (the ring!) ensures she’s the star. And there’s nothing wrong with this; but where’s the guide for men! All he can hope for is rugged good looks and a striking posture—and may the Grimms help him if he has neither.

The sole task of showing up and looking good is a lot harder than you’d think. Yes, he could just rent a tux and arrive on time, but shouldn’t he be given some leeway to express his style and personality in the same way as his bride? Doesn’t it complement her if he pays attention to detail? Choosing her birth stone as his cufflink or ditching the tux in favor of a finely-tailored suit may be just the touch that makes the day memorable for bride and groom.

Blake and Lindsey met in college at Florida State University (FSU), so it was important to incorporate that into their wedding, Lindsey surprised Blake with the FSU grooms cake. Instead of wedding favors, Lindsey and Blake donated to their favorite charities on behalf of their guests. It was important that the weekend was more of a vacation for them and their guests so they rented bungalows at The Breakers pool, hosted spa days, had golf outings, and celebrated their love with their friends and family.

Shamika and Bryan first met in High School and Shamika pursued Bryan. They initially dated for a long while but broke up for a couple years. As they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder and the pair found themselves reunited. Ever the romantic Bryan proposed to Shamika at her surprise birthday party. Of course there was never a doubt that Shamika would say “Yes”.

Opting for greenery over florals as the ceremony and reception were both outdoors, there were lots of lush eucalyptus with peonies, hydrangea and wildflowers.

The ceremony aisle was lined with tree stumps holding candles, reclaimed wood signs to help people find their seats, and rose petals. Talia and Bryan's alter was a blanket of rose petals and eucalyptus was hung on the arbor. The bridesmaids slowly decorated the arbor as they walked down the aisle. Guests were given wooden cones filled with feathers to throw over the bride and groom. Guests mingled under hundreds of Mexican flags hung from the rafters and took pictures in a pseudo-photo booth. A photographer was present to take professional images of the guests as they held up antique marquis letters and costume props. The idea was to allow large groups to fit into a single photograph, something that a traditional booth would not have allowed. Cafe lights strung from hundred-year-old trees and thousands of candles illuminated the night, and starshaped lanterns were hung over the dance floor. The venue's reclaimed pallet bar featured lush greenery and bird cages and all drinks were served in Mason jars. Water bottles and vintage sodas were served on ice in antique bath tubs for guests to help themselves. Reclaimed wood signs made

by Talia, of barn wood from the couple's Tennessee ranch were placed around the reception area to direct guests, and antique letter P's collected by the bride's family were scattered about to celebrate the couples new last name, Petersen.

The men enjoyed cigars, whiskey and moonshine at the cigar bar which was set up on an enormous boulder. Guests roasted marshmallows and made s'mores by the bonfire and served themselves from the three food trucks that showed up during cocktail hour. Having the guests inside the barn for cocktail hour allowed for an element of surprise when the barn doors were opened and the entire reception area was illuminated and the food trucks had arrived and were ready to serve. The cake table was an antique dresser that was sanded and refinished, as were the bride and groom's chairs.

The sweetheart table was situated on the steps leading to the dance floor so that Talia and Bryan had a view of their entire reception during dinner.

It was touch and go at one point, whether the wedding that actors, Dan and Noel had dreamed of would ever happen. Tragic illness struck both sides of the marriage with Dan's father suffering a heart attack and Noel's mother being diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastic Cancer. Thankfully the only side effect was a delay and both parents are now doing well.

I am a woman born in the sixties. For some that's a long time ago, but for me and my peers that era stood for a period of change. Sexism was being identified... sex was being publicly discussed.

Women were taking their position in the world, needed to be accepted in the workforce and wanted equality in fields that were predominately held by men. They were burning bras, and “free love” was taking over Woodstock in the U.S. And I'm sure other places around the world were having their fair share of “change.”

Man Landed On The Moon.

But what did that do for family life, marriage, and family values? We each have a different viewpoint and different life experiences, but there is something that remains constant: Love. From the beginning of time man has always sought love. He has always longed for family, a sense of purpose and belonging.

So, in this issue, we bring to you a variety of viewpoints with men on love, grooming, giving back to their community and their individual sense of style. We invited several of our male writers to share with us their day to day routine, style, and viewpoints of beauty and grooming. We are certain you will enjoy the article on Africa from two gentlemen who explored the beauty of the continent, the people and culture.

I had the opportunity to research and interview some of the iconic figures in the fashion and style industry. Read a couple of exciting books, attended several wonderful events that celebrated several great men such as Carlos, thanks to my friends at Assouline.

As you turn these beautiful pages we invite you to stop and read these wonderful articles, and think of the man you are about to marry and the man that raised you. Engage in conversation with your friends and celebrate who they are and the love you receive from them. Think of the wonderful, exciting and funny moments and know that with all of their flaws and perfect imperfections, you can’t replace that love that you know is there. Allow them room to make mistakes, forgive them when they fall short, and praise them when they handle their business. The rewards can be bittersweet, but it just may quench your thirst in this life.

I had the extraordinary opportunity to interview Larry Holmes, Jr. the son of one of my sports favorites, former Heavyweight Champion and International Hall of Fame Inductee— Larry Holmes. Holmes was a sparring partner for competing heavyweight champions Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. This interview sparked memories for me … sweet memories of the '60s, as a young girl, when I had this very special time with my father , eating Frankie’s BBQ cole slaw and French fries while we watched and discussed the Muhammad Ali fights. And, of course, topics of Larry Holmes would always grace our discussions.

Those incredibly special moments, listening to my mom fuss about how late it was and that I should not go to bed on a full stomach, echoed every time we sat down. We would always laugh and she would pout and leave.

Larry Holmes, Jr. and his lovely fiancée are indeed a match. They seem to automatically feel each other’s words and often finished one another’s sentences. I think you will enjoy learning how they found their special love. Theirs is a beautiful love story with both the fiancé and the fiancée so strikingly beautiful—we are pleased that they adorn our pages.

Too often we think of our men as being macho. However, sometimes they are indeed so macho that they don’t always want to do the specialized grooming and dressing for fear that they won’t maintain their macho vibe! They could never be more wrong. We will learn about the “Art of Shaving” and all that it entails—I must admit, I do have a love for that quasi-rugged look! Of course, it would truly work with a real slick jacket and an especially stunning, masculine watch.

Naturally, we must include the excitement of Spa Life. There are so many types of spas that specialize in particular techniques. And our editors have had a great time checking out a couple that will have you online making an appointment.

Oh my goodness, first of all Victor, our Lifestyle & Travel Director, doesn’t even know that I absolutely adore The Lion King and that his dream come true trip to Kenya gave in to not only his own childhood dreams—But, visiting Africa has always been my dream as well. While I have traveled to Africa, it was for business; unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to spend a couple of days on safari nor to travel around the continent. Perhaps one day I will just put a map of Africa on the wall and pick a destination … But for now, I will enjoy the vivid and colorful words that Victor shared.

I hope you spend a few moments on the Philanthropy article - we are highlighting several couples who have placed emphasis on giving as a cornerstone to their marriage. Too often when we begin thinking about the wedding, we don't always think about how we will navigate other outside events as a couple. These families found their rhythm together in helping others.

How can a 28-year-old honors graduate of London’s prestigious Central Saint Martins hold such a high level position at such a tender age? Simple: Hard work. It all started

with a submission of her illustrations of her book.

And she worked her way up to the top four years later to becoming head designer. Bravo!

FINANCE DONATING Did you donate money or volunteer your time to a cause last year? Why? Let’s be honest. Many of us gave probably because someone asked us for the donation. This is not to say that we didn’t believe in the causes we supported or that we aren’t sincerely generous in our giving. However, it is most likely that many of us do not pre-plan our philanthropy.

When we plan our contributions we experience more significance in our giving, ensuring that we contribute to the changes we’d like to see in the world, while helping us reach personal goals. Below are a few tips to help you plan.

1.

Make sure you’re financially stable before giving money. You should have no high interest debt, a 6-month emergency fund, and a retirement fund to which you’re contributing at least as much as your employers will match (or, if self-employed, 10% of earnings). If your financial foundation is not strong, you can volunteer your time now and donate money when you’re financially stable.

2.

Connect your philanthropy to your life and career goals. For example, if you wanted to change fields such as from marketing to accounting, you could gain relevant experience by donating accounting services to a nonprofit. If an incurable disease runs in your family, give money to support research for a cure.

Truthfully, I had a hairdresser friend back in Austin, Texas who had a great apartment, drove a beautiful car and had a lot of money. He inspired me to pursue this career. I didn’t know then how obsessed I would become with hair and the hair industry.

How does our bride care for her hair leading up to her big day?

Make sure to give yourself a good deep conditioning treatment a week before your big day to ensure that your hair is at its healthiest.

What is the most important product that a bride can shop for to maintain the brilliance of your work?

Hairspray, hairspray, HAIRSPRAY! The right hairspray will be key to maintaining your look for the biggest day or night of your life.

How often should a client see you?

I like for my Gibson girls to come back and see me every six weeks.

Give us some do's and don'ts before your wedding day.

-DO have a hair trial! What you envision in your head may not be the same as your end result.

You should always test out a few hairstyles that you like with your stylist before committing to your final look.

-DO bring pictures of the hairstyles you like to your stylist. This will allow him or her to have a visual of exactly what you want.

-DO take pictures of the hairstyle from every angle during the trial. This way you can see exactly what it will look like in your wedding photos!

-DO color you hair six months before your wedding date if you’re doing something different with your hair color, so that if you don’t get it right the first time you have some wiggle room.

-DON’T assume that your regular stylist will be right for your wedding. Wedding hairstyles are quite different from your everyday blowout or haircut, so you may need to find someone who is more skilled in this kind of styling.

HAIL TO THE “QUEEN OF BRIDAL”

Yumi Katsura, Japan’s and one of the world's most prominent bridal designers and the key founder of Japan’s modern bridal industry, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of her very first runway show in Japan in 1965.

She opened her bridal salon in 1964, initiated the establishment of the All Japan Bridal Association, and has worked tirelessly to make western-style white wedding dresses accessible to Japanese women. Up until then, most women dressed in heavy traditional kimono to get married. In addition she

set to show the world how Japanese aesthetic could be woven into traditional western wear. Altogether she has showcased over 500 collections in Japan and around the world.

“A gift of words showed me my life’s calling,” says Katsura. Words that still echo in Yumi Katsura’s ears. “ The most beautiful thing in the world is the bride.” So said the late Pierre Balmain when he visited her bridal house in Nogizaka, Tokyo. And he went on, “I do haute couture in Paris, but I only have a few chances every year to work with wedding dresses. I envy you for being surrounded with wedding dresses every single day.” The experience of realizing every day that she was engaged in work that was envied by the most respected person in haute couture renewed and still ignites Yumi Katsura’s enthusiasm and passion and moved her to embrace her calling to work with bridal fashion to this day.

Her credentials are unparalleled, well-known as the “Queen of Wedding Gowns” in Japan, with her exquisite array of gowns, kimonos and statement dresses that fused traditional Japanese aesthetic with modern elegance; she is the first Asian member of the Haute Couture of Camera Nazionale Della Moda Italiana, and has presented her works at various exclusive and prestigious shows in the world, such as Donna Sotto le Stelle, one of the most coveted shows in Italy, held at the Spanish Plaza, together with key designers including Chanel, Armani, Missoni and Etro. She has designed for a host of celebrities and in 1993 she even designed a vestment for Pope John Paul II which he wore as he presided over mass on Easter Sunday.

Fifty years ago and very soon after she started in the wedding business, Yumi Katsura decided to find out what wedding dresses were like all over the world and decided that she simply had to travel the world. To obtain visas, she became a special correspondent for a women’s magazine. Her interviews were with top international stars. It was very intimidating to cover luminaries such as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, but she says those were the interviews that she got the most from. “When I met Grace Kelly, I understood the real meaning of “elegant” as a verb. The elegance that she exuded in the way she spoke, the way she moved and the overall way she carried herself provided me with a fresh awareness of the elements that are most necessary when creating a wedding dress,” says Katsura. “Audrey Hepburn’s was a different kind of elegance, it was a sweetness, a loveliness and an air of sophistication that was so approachable and appealing to women from every walk of life, she was the kind of beauty that women loved, that really impressed me,” adds Katsura. Those lessons have never been lost.

Yumi designed a lightweight vestment in the traditional Japanese Hakata-ori, which is known for it's thin, lightweight splendor. She designed a special material of pure gold leaf with a wave of pansies - the national flower of Poland.

Shortly after opening her bridal house, her talent was recognized worldwide based on creations like the famous “Yumi Line” now called a “fit and flare” inspired by the elegant kimono flare. In America her dresses have been sold at the most exclusive stores, such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel, Kleinfeld and Neiman Marcus. In 1988, the Yumi Katsura Bridal Museum was established in Kobe, Japan – dedicated to the exhibition of authentic traditional bridal gowns from all over the world. Today she operates in several retail outlets around the world and has flagship stores in Tokyo’s Minato-Ku district and in Paris on the fashionable Rue Cambon.

Weddings have been a sacred celebration in civilizations and cultures across the globe. Today you might get a glimpse of extravagant ceremonies along tropical beaches, and metropolitan cities but there’s another important part that most people don’t get to witness. It’s the preparation of the bride-to-be, the change of hands, and the passage to becoming a married woman. In countries like the Philippines, Tanzania, India, Thailand, and Peru their pre-wedding rituals are even more important to establish prosperity, joy, and love to a marriage.

KERALA, INDIA Mehndi (or Henna) is used pre-wedding to tell a story of the bride-to-be. It can take up to 48 hours, but it’s an extension of a woman's allure. Some interesting facts I've learned from Indian brides are that the darker the color the longer the marriage will last. You will see women using lemon after an application to darken it and make it last longer. Henna is said to heighten the senses and bring luck to a marriage. It’s applied to the bride's hand and feet.

In a fast-paced world many of these ancient beauty customs are dying out. But when it comes to nourishing your spirit these beauty traditions are the secret to radiating your inner glow. From kumkuma (Kumkuma is most often applied by Indians to the forehead, with the ancient Indian belief that "the human body is divided into seven vortices of energy, called chakras, beginning at the base of the spine and ending at the top of the head.) down the hair part to singo—a seven day scrub in Zanzibar—there’s a distinct beauty in honoring rituals that have been practiced for centuries and to being the vehicle that keeps those traditions alive. On my travels I’ve been fortunate enough to take part as a special guest to these celebrations where women have shared with me their beauty traditions that are still practiced in modern times.

THAILAND So, whether you are true to tradition or having fun creating new ones, it is important that you begin your wedding day: Relaxed, Peaceful and filled with

Located on an island off Africa with a mixture of Arabic and African influence this Stone City is home to many Swahili beauty treatments. I visited Mrembo Spa, meaning beautiful woman, which openly shared with me their long tradition of Singo while listening to tarab music and enjoying their signature lemongrass tea. A week before a Zanzibar girl marries she will undergo a daily “Singo” of the skin. An organic scrub made of fresh Jasmin flowers, Ylang Ylang, rose petals, and sandalwood, mixed with rose water: The bride-to-be will be repeatedly scrubbed and massaged for several days—sometimes up until two weeks—or at least until her skin is soft as silk.

She will also be kept indoors to be revealed on her wedding day, believed to be lighter skinned and rejuvenated.

For centuries, bundles have been made with a blend of 16-20 traditional Thai ingredients. These ingredients include citronella, lemongrass, turmeric oil, and other relaxing herbs that relieve stiff muscles, and joints. It eases chronic pain and stimulates the senses to remove stress, and fatigue. It is popular to receive a bundle massage before a wedding day.

Traditional Thai weddings will vary from region to region. Buddhism is an integral part of the Thai wedding, which includes the use of garlands and a white forehead marking to bring together the spiritual unity of the couple. The white marking is made of a paste that is blessed throughout the ceremony.

INDIA (NORTH) In the northern part of India, in the haldi ceremony turmeric is applied to the bride’s face and body. The turmeric is associated with fertility and prosperity.

It signifies a ritual purification and is meant to relax the bride and groom.

This ritual is done the day before the wedding as part of the pre-wedding celebrations for a bride.

PERU, SOUTH AMERICA Bathing was a sacred ritual for women of Central and South America. Many women still bathe in rock baths filled with offerings to Pachamama the goddess of wind, and to mother earth representing love, beauty, and health.

These baths were used as a rite of passage for young women before entering marriage and motherhood.

Today you can find local spas like the Inca Spa that will re-create this beauty tradition with a massage and a very authentic experience. The aim is to purify the women and prepare them for their new beginning.

I know you are probably looking at this and wondering what the heck do I mean by that? Well, in a normal situation—when you have a lot to do in a day—you make your list and run the errands, just trying to do everything yourself. But we won’t take the time to take care of ourselves by finding the time to eat and get a good night’s sleep.

How much sleep does the average person need?

When we are under pressure to complete something, we will do an all-nighter to get the job done. When we are stressed our sleep pattern becomes irregular and we face hours of sleepless nights. And if we are lucky and we do shut our eyes, it’s restless sleep. Many of us do not realize the damage we are doing to our physical body, and please do not forget our moods.

How does lack of sleep affect the human body? Women?

Since I am not a physician, I wanted to get an expert opinion to share with our brides and grooms who may be dealing with some of these concerns. We were fortunate enough to catch up with Dr. Kevin Campbell. Dr. Campbell is the official on-air

Most experts agree that adults need 7.5 hours of sleep a night in order to promote good health. Younger children and teens need quite a bit more (almost 12 hours) and seniors need less sleep.

Lack of sleep can have numerous negative effects on the body including increased blood pressure, higher risk for diabetes, and increased risk for heart attack and stroke. In clinical studies, women who are sleep deprived report decreased libido and lower sex drive in general. This may be due to increased sleepiness, decreased energy and increased stress. Sleep deprivation also can result in increased work place accidents and may diminish our ability to focus and concentrate at work.

How does stress impact the way we sleep?

Stress—either physical or emotional—can increase levels of stress hormones in the body including adrenaline and cortisol.

These higher levels of stress hormones can impair our ability to fall asleep and may also prevent us from reaching the deeper levels of the sleep cycle How does lack of sleep affect our attitude? Mood? Body? Skin?

Lack of sleep can actually affect mood in a negative way. In many clinical studies, sleep deprivation has been associated with depression. In addition, lack of sleep may impair our ability to tolerate the ups and downs of daily life and may result in flashes of anger and frustration. In many cases, a negative cycle may result—sleep deprivation promotes depression and depression may result in more difficulty with falling asleep.

Sleep deprivation can also affect our skin—lack of sleep can result in fine lines, puffy eyes and dark circles. The higher levels of cortisol associated with sleep deprivation can also promote the breakdown of collagen—an important component of healthy skin.

So ladies and gentlemen, before you lose sleep think about how it will affect not only your body, but also your mood and ultimately your special day.

In traditional Sicilian weddings, to help a young girl dress for her big day was one of the biggest traditions around the nuptial itself. And the wedding gown was a very important aspect of the occasion. In various cultures, white had not always been the popular option for a wedding dress. For instance, the color of the wedding attire of Roman brides was orange or yellow.

The Chinese brides wore red, as did the Byzantines who added precious appliquè in gold and stones. The Indian brides also favored a red dress, and they still follow this tradition today. In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance period, not only was the gown very colorful and customary for a wedding, but it could also be worn again at other special events. In England, Queen Victoria was the first woman to wear a white wedding dress. Before that time the color of choice had been blue. A blue wedding dress was also a common color choice in parts of Sicily. This color not only signified purity it also symbolized good luck, and the blue aquamarine stone was often used as a good luck charm.

On the morning of the wedding, it was common for the mother, sister(s), the future mother-in-law, and virgin women to help the bride to get ready for her big day. During the preparation, they would sing an ancient song for the bride. It was forbidden for the bride to show the wedding dress to the groom or to even look at herself in the mirror. If the bride wanted to look in the mirror, she would have to remove a shoe, a glove or an earring.

Other wedding traditions that were practiced include the bride-to-be receiving a veil from a happily married woman to symbolize passing her luck and happiness on to the new bride. Also, the groom would meet the bride halfway down the aisle, lift her veil and receive her from her father, who had accompanied her up to that point. To symbolize the last gift given

as a groom to his bride, the groom customarily gave the bride a small bouquet of orange blossom flowers that was tied with a white ribbon. The orange blossom symbolized purity and chastity.

In modern times, some brides choose to continue certain wedding dress traditions, but only as far as color goes–white is still highly preferred.

However, the length of the gown is very modern. In 1969, Yoko Ono wore a white dress for her wedding to John Lennon, but it was a mini dress and she accessorized it with white knee-highs. In 1971, Bianca married Mick Jagger in a low-cut white pantsuit, with nothing underneath. In 2002, rock star Gwen Stefani was married in a half-traditional silk wedding gown: white on top, with a fuchsia-dipped skirt. And in Sicily, some brides accessorize their gown with coral stone instead of aquamarine stone.

Let’s not forget about our handsome groom, the man of our life. From a Sicilian designer, a beautiful loafer is worn, showing a connection to the past, and represented by typical Sicilian puppets and saints. And to connect it to the present, a very modern shape would be incorporated. And what about a personal touch? A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME After a bride has spent considerable attention on her dress, selected her venue, and carefully crafted a peaceful seating chart, her mind then shifts to the small details that enhance the look and feel of the wedding, particularly her flowers. Whether it’s a decorative centerpiece on tables or handpicked for her bouquet, choosing floral arrangements can be a thorn in the side of any bride, especially if she is taking on the task by herself.

“Sometimes, it drives them crazy and they end up in the hospital with a nervous breakdown,” says Ricardo Luna, internationally renowned florist and event planner. I was delighted with this assignment; to conduct a telephone interview with an amazingly gorgeous couple to learn how they met and all the little secrets they were having about one another as they began their journey of love.

It literally could have almost been any love story: Woman meets Man; Man falls in love with Woman. This fairytale romance started more than six months ago during a bigtime high roller weekend party during the National Basketball League’s Legends weekend and Black Jack Tour at one of the nation’s largest international casinos.

In his new position, Director of Player Development: New Markets, handsome and debonair Larry Holmes, Jr. was in deep concentration as his co-worker was giving him pertinent information on his new high level position, when he had an odd notion to look up towards the elevator and out of the corner of Holmes’ eye, he noticed slightly behind someone was one of the most gorgeous women he had ever seen. Like a Goddess Nea McLin descended the escalator and Holmes quickly realized that this beautiful vision of loveliness was perhaps the woman of his dreams.

In hindsight, this fairytale romance probably began with that quick two-way glance and subsequent seating of her and her entourage in his coveted VIP section. Holmes chuckles when he tells us how he had to take a few moments to get himself together so that he would appear to be a lot cooler than he was feeling at the moment. As he guided these VIP patrons to their seats, he had a brief opportunity to chat with Nea and quickly learned that she was a fashion model from Finland and left after exchanging cards and numbers.

e all giggled as Nea shares her private conversation with her friend, “I told my friend that he looked nice.” Upon hearing this news, you can almost hear Larry smile. Apparently, Nea was talking with someone in her group when she focused on this sophisticated young man who was seemingly in charge.

Though the two didn’t start dating immediately, it was clear why they were smitten in an instant, Nea said. “We just saw each other and that was it. Love at first sight,” she said.

With time, the two began to learn more about one another and their views on marriage, faith, children, priorities, goals and financial stability. The questions helped them not only learn about the topics but provided a vision for what their lives could be together.

As the conversations progressed it became apparent that Nea would in fact one day become Larry’s wife.

But there was an important trip that needed to be scheduled. It was imperative that Nea meet his family; meet his mother and father and siblings.

Clearly attracted to each other, they enjoy pleasant drives on the weekends, long walks in the mountains and are notoriously private. After about the third date, Holmes decided that Nea and his parents needed to meet. When asked why so quickly, Holmes, says “this was something special and I wanted her to see me and my family and what type of man I am.”

Larry Holmes, Jr. felt it important that she see his family, their love and commitment to one another and “what type of man I am and how our lives would be together.”

Family has clearly laid a solid foundation for Holmes and Nea was pleased.

These two were so funny, already in sync. When Holmes leaves work and goes home for the evening, he decides to Google Nea and realized he didn’t have her last name – which apparently didn’t matter as she was listed in the search engines as – Nea – blonde – model and her photo quickly appears. Meanwhile, Nea goes home and Googles Holmes and finds out all these right things about this very special man.

even real you don’t even have a ring.” At which point, Larry takes off the vintage Rolex his father gave him and asked “Nea to hold it until he got a ring.

So, off Larry went to find the appropriate ring – which he did and then rode around with the ring in his pocket until he felt the time was right… when lo and behold they are out looking at houses in Jersey and watched this incredible sunset, where Larry got down on one knee, while Nea continues to watch the setting sun… poor Larry had to feign coughing to get her attention…when he does ask her to marry him Nea pauses and says, “ Of course I will marry you.”

When Larry asked Nea to be his wife, she was divorced with a son and he was single.

While they lived in two different places they tried the weekend commute and finally the couple decided to put their wedding plans in motion. Finally, the days of their separation came to an end and they decided to move together.

When asked how the relationship works since they haven’t known one another for long, “It’s been give-and-take,” Larry said of their success. “She has feelings, and I know when I say something that hurts her feelings, it hurts me as well.”

Larry and Nea are quite focused on the success of their relationship and their diverse background, Nea is from Finland and Larry was born in 73 | WBM Pennsylvania.

hile they may look at situations differently; they have invested time to learn how to best communicate in their relationship, making it grow and flourish.

The lovely couple starts nearly every morning with breakfast. Then, they head into their day with the basis of their love to work together. Nearly everything they do, they do with one another, says Nea. But what’s made them such an enduring couple are the dozens of smaller moments that they steal which all add up to a relationship that feels earned and realistic.

After our delightful interview my curiosity got the best of me and I started researching the wedding traditions of Finland in comparison to traditional American weddings.

Apparently, in Finnish wedding culture, there seems to be a confluence of German Russian and Swedish traditions. Specifically, the Russian and Karelian traditions, such as wailing songs, ceremonial hair braiding and village community weddings were popular in the Finnish-speaking countryside.

According to the legends and folklore; around the 1950’s American wedding fashion and customs started to infiltrate some of the world’s customs.

And, what was fascinating was that the Finnish culture loves rather long engagements – three to four years is sometimes considered average, which is reminiscent of some of the marriage traditions from long ago where families didn’t necessarily “arrange” a marriage per-se, but an interesting way of determining whether the two families and the couple were like-minded, and socially equal families. This tradition was sealed with a handshake, an engagement ring and the exchange of gifts between the couple and their families.

When asked about their upcoming wedding plans the lovely couple says they have several other priorities and are enjoying these moments of learning about one another and will focus on their special day when it is time.

Even though todays Finnish brides make a grand entrance into her wedding ceremony venue, some maintain the old Finnish tradition where the bride walks alongside her husband to then stand in front of the celebrant; many brides choose to be “given away” by her father or an older, male relative. Another traditional custom was for both bride and groom to sit on special seats of honor at their reception. As guests pay their respects, they would deposit cash gifts into a shawlcovered sieve, held by the bride.

Instead of throwing the bouquet to identify the next potential bride-to-be as the passing on of the bridal crown; they sometimes adhere to the Estonian game of passing on the groom’s hat, the single women blindfold the bride and then dance around her. The bride then has to grab one and successfully pass over her bridal crown, as a fun way to find the next bride!

Or, what’s delightful is that they might incorporate musical chairs and children’s party games as part of the fun, with special celebratory prizes such as champagne.

Another popular custom in Finland that is similar to Estonian and Russian traditions, is the bride-stealing game. The bride is whisked away by the groomsmen and held ransom until the groom completes a special task in order to get her back. Although both bride and groom are likely to be aware that the game could be played, they won’t know any of the details because of course all the fun is in catching everyone unawares! Modern variations also include stealing the in-laws!

As Finland’s social-economic divide from ancient Finland diminished, as did the need for economically motivated marriage matches, with new western traditions and styles became adopted.

Either way, be it of Finnish or American Tradition, this adorable Power Couple will probably set a new trend that will rock the wedding world. We do wish them a life filled with love & laughter!

Many brides these days are choosing to wear a vintage wedding dress over a newer designer gown. The reasons are many and varied. Vintage gowns are often less expensive than on-trend designs. They represent a more unique approach to fashion that you won't see elsewhere.

There's the whole environmentally responsible aspect to recycle and of course, and many may say the quality is by far superior to the modern day en masse offerings.

For some, the notion of wearing a family heirloom wedding dress is traditional and is an infinitely wonderful way to pay tribute to your parents’ marriage by celebrating the symbolism of “passing it on” as you take your own journey into the world of holy matrimony.

No matter how celebrated vintage style might be, many of us still get that gross factor at the thought of wearing something used. Honestly, once loved items may sometimes look unappealing in the preservation

Reuse If you are planning on wearing your mom’s, your grandmother’s or any vintage wedding dress, you don’t have to wear it the exact same way they originally sported it. In many cases that once loved gown may be damaged, worn, or faded, so be realistic about what you will be able to do with it. Find an expert who can assess the dress and determine whether the fabric is still strong and if any damages can be fixed and what can be salvaged. A session with an excellent alterations specialist or good seamstress can help you renovate the dress into a more suitable dress for your personal style.

30 LESSONS FOR LOVING Somebody said, “Yes” to the proposal. Today it can be either or so now the wedding plans are underway and reality is starting to settle in, and the big questions are starting to come at you faster and faster.

They are the same classic questions that many have been asking for years: Am I making the right decision to marry my partner? How do I know if this is really love? How will we handle conflict? Will things change for us after we are married? How will marriage affect my career? Will I have to give up my hobbies? What about children? Inlaws? How will we handle our financial concerns?

These are just a few of the questions that have either come up prior to the big proposal or are current topics of conversations.

We live in an information society that with a mere click of a couple of buttons you can have in depth access to both solicited and unsolicited information. The Internet has made it extremely simple for us to get answers to any concerns we may have. There have been thousands of books written with the goal of aiding readers with their insatiable quest for happiness with their beloved.

Let us not forget, Reality TV, which has brought a new dimension to what many want us to believe is viewed as normal, while gossip magazines and pop culture continue to overwhelm us with their opinions and pages of a variety of celebrities giving us a glimpse of what they perceive as a “successful” marriage filled with the glamour life that exudes; material things, parties, all on camera, leaving very little privacy.

With so many options for advice, how does one navigate their own life? Well, we have taken the guessing out of this equation. We caught up with someone who is quickly becoming my favorite book author, Karl Pillemer, PhD, the author of 30 Lessons for Living, was just released. I immediately began reading my copy and knew from the forward this would be a brilliant gift for today’s couples.

The information gathered was collected by the Cornell University Gerontology Professor, of Human Development. Professor Pillemer. Dr. Pillemer has been teaching for some 30 years, and has been married for some 36 years, and was kind enough take a moment to discuss his findings.

His extensive study ranged from various ethnicities, social, economic background, of our elders, American elders, lovingly labeled The Experts. What better group to learn from than those who have already navigated their way through this life and have successfully either survived, outlived, divorced, and raised families through this union.

The thing that made this book special to me was the unique way he was able to highlight both the good, bad, and challenging moments of married life. “Using social science research methods, I amassed a group of over seven hundred older Americans who were interviewed in-depth.”

So, you are getting married and you have discussed children, where you want to live, careers and whether you will enjoy exercise together in the morning. But, did you once consider whether your mate has a commitment to the very least of us or institutions that are bringing the arts or medical research to our communities with love and passion. Have the two of you discussed a family foundation or what organizations are important to you individually or collectively? It is an important aspect of your life.

In almost every dictionary the word Philanthropy, is of Greek origin, etymologically means “love of humanity.”

What a powerful statement. There are those people in this world who have this incredible sense of duty, and as a couple they adhere to the old adage “to whom much is given much is expected.”

What is so beautiful is that the couples we highlight have made giving an important part of their lives and it is from that premise that speaks to the souls of the very and not so very wealthy. And, we do know that philanthropy relieves certain social problems, uses the arts, educational issues and often gets into the root of major human issues and problems, which helps develop services or systems for the people to help themselves.

To many, the world and its leaders can’t change the lives of everyone. But, if we all pitch in – no matter how much money or time or resources we can change the lives of others for the better. The world is huge and it is filled with pain, sorrow, poverty, homelessness and so much more – that people will take from themselves to give their time, money and resources for the better good: in the sense of caring, nourishing, developing and enhancing “what it is to be human” for everyone involved, the donors and the recipients.

Just imagine if we all added our little bit we could actually change the world – how great is that?! Well we have several folks we would like to introduce to you that are true philanthropist in their communities and beyond.

We open with one woman and her husband who created a company that helps their community! Deborah Koenigsberger founded Hearts of Gold (HoG), a 501 (c) (3) corporation, more than 20 years ago, with the mission to foster sustainable change in the lives of homeless mothers and their children.

Deborah Koenigsberger spent a lot of time walking to work on the streets of New York and became distressed at the sight of homeless people sleeping in boxes, asking for food and appearing as though they needed medical attention. Being a very successful business woman, Deborah took control of her emotions through her incredible work with HoG. This company supports New York’s existing programs while expanding their reach to develop new shelters and outreach in obscure areas. HoG dollars go directly to those in need. Once a family demonstrates their independence and move into their own places, the moms are eligible to join their Alumni WBM | 92 Support Group (ASG), where HoG remains a valued

transitional partner and support system.

Todate, Hearts of Gold has dramatically and permanently improved the lives of more than 216 mothers and their 450+ children annually at three transformational housing facilities: Semiperm, created by Settlement Housing Fund and Nazareth Housings’ Harlem and East Village locations.

This number does not include the women and children that are a part of their Alumni Support Group.

HoG provides furniture items such as extra beds, chairs and housewares and helps to create a 365 day a year ongoing presence and reminder to moms that they are not alone. In these and so many other ways, they bring the love!

Many of these women and children have been victims of domestic violence or the children may be in the foster care system or with other family members. A very common issue is these at-risk mothers are functioning at a 10th grade education level, putting them at a severe disadvantage.

Throughout the year HoG plans birthday parties and other holidays activities for these wonderful HoG moms and children. They dine on a

catered meal, work on craft projects and have a joyous time together. Many homeless mothers are almost ready to give birth and HoG, aides in the celebration by providing pregnant mothers with a “Shower in a Bag.” A successful entrepreneur of 25 years, Deb started her career as a fashion model, and then worked extensively as a stylist before opening her upscale women's French boutique Noir et Blanc in the heart of NYC's NOMAD area.

She is a wife, a mother of two sons. Over the years Deb has assembled a very motivated group of supporters for Hearts of Gold’s Board of Directors, Advisory Board and Donors. The list reads like a veritable Who’s Who in business and philanthropy. Friends, volunteers and supporters from all walks of life both domestically and internationally, with Deb’s leadership, have stepped up and collectively caused Hearts of Gold to become the viable change vehicle it is today.

The Thrifty HoG is a unique retail establishment: not only do proceeds benefit the homeless mothers and children supported by HoG, but the shop also provides job-training for these struggling women. The goal at Hearts of Gold is simple: Empowerment, Sustainability, Self-Sufficiency and Lots of Love.

Deborah and her incredible husband, Thilo, comptroller for Lufthansa Airlines, have been married for 20 years. Their son, Florian, attended Yale, and their younger son, Stephan is a student at the Summit School in Queens. From the time they were young, both boys understood the need to give back. “A lot of my friends are trying to instill in their kids this sense of philanthropy, sharing and giving, not just ‘me, me, me,’” Deborah says. “When a parent tells a child, ‘I’m giving your doll to Sally in the shelter,’ it doesn’t mean a lot. But when that child actually meets Sally, the act of giving has more impact,” she says.

For all you soon to be or newlyweds, this is the way to go… creating your own non-profit or foundation. You can speak with your financial advisor and create an advisory board of directors, those who will give or get and certainly show up with their sage advice and resources. The Vision – Taking Root – Preservation of Life Through Prevention : In 2006, after coming face to face with the challenges most Africans in the U.S. must endure when dealing with the illness of a loved one back home Nana Eyeson-Akiwowo realized that basic health information and resources for non-communicable diseases, that are taken for granted by Americans, can save the lives of many Africans on the continent. With the help of 21 friends she coordinated the first annual “Gift of Life @ Christmas” health fair in Ghana, with resources they need to make better lifestyle choices as it relates to health in one location. Since the launch of the 2006 “Gift of Life @ Christmas” health fair, AHN continues the momentum through grass roots funding efforts and the passionate individuals who have dedicated their time to serve nearly 2000 residents to date in the Accra and Kumasi regions of Ghana.

Projects: 2006 AHN launched the first “Gift of Life @ Christmas” health fair in Pokuase with 21 volunteers targeting 300 beneficiaries, focused on hypertension, diabetes, child nutrition, primary dental screenings; 2007 AHN partnered with Millennium Cities Initiative village Old Tafo, Kumasi at the behest of Dr. Sonia Sachs implementing a one-day health fair.

My children believe that I am starting a small library in our home. As the years go by, they see our collection of literature slowly growing and wonder what we are doing with all of these books. So, having read many incredible words by amazing authors it makes perfect sense. Books are beautiful bound treasures that have outlived many of their authors.

As long as I can remember I have often wondered: who were these people that loved books so much that they would make it their life mission to publish books for a living. And now after all of these years, I finally had the distinct honor and privilege to work with one of my most admired publishing house Assouline.

We had a rare opportunity to have a conversation with the founder, Martine Assouline, who generously shared with us her intimate thoughts on love, family and making that special day of your life the most important part of creating a memory with your beloved.

The power couple wed in May 24, 1991 in Saint Tropez. She recalls the memorable moments of her wedding day and smiles as she envisions the arrival of her wedding dress. As I politely questioned her about her life and legacy of her family, I noticed that her answers were short and sweet, and delicately stated—simply elegant. What I gathered from these responses was what I suspected all along.

Madame Assouline loves the simple, beautiful things in life: love, loyalty, and a rare passion for one’s dreams by creating memories that can be documented through books, literature which can be passed along for generations, and bringing joy to others.

Both Martine and her husband Prosper knew at an early age they had a love for books so it was easy for them to build this empire together, not as competitors, but as partners. Both their love for books, beauty and having a mutual desire for quality, taste and inspiration is as great as their need for oxygen.

Her one bit of advice to newly married couples ... respect oneself, and each other, be understanding, stand in your own (vision, dreams), make that clear in the beginning. “Things have to be clear in terms of power and money, that will help avoid problems later; a powerfully memorable statement.

Their legacy doesn't stop there, they are a big supporter of the Children's Fund. They believe that education is the future for every child. And if one does not have time for love and education ... Do not have a child. They are firm believers of supporting those in need. Bravo.

After our interview, I fell in love with this couple ... Martine is a gorgeous woman both visibly and internally, and the time she took to answer our questions spoke volumes.

Mix sugar, water, and Angostura bitters in an old-fashioned glass with a bar spoon or muddler.

Pour in Bacardí® 8, fill with ice cubes, and stir repeatedly.

It began at age 8. The idea of traversing East Africa in search of the characters from Disney’s “The Lion King” enchanted my imagination from the moment the credits rolled in the movie theater. As a child, I imagined galloping through the gorge with zebra, roaming the bush with a lion pride, and submerging at a watering hole with the hippo. Until recently, this had all been an elaborate fantasy—established in childhood and faded over time. Growing up in the Western world, there is little romanticism attributed to the African continent. We are inundated through movies, literature, and history teachings with a worldview that put Europe at the center. And so there I went. In search of the settings of my many books and history lessons. I spent the better part of my life exploring that which had replaced my childhood curiosities. When the time came to renew my passport this year, I made a promise to christen it with a new dedication: the renewal of my childhood fantasies. And with that promise, I boarded the plane to Nairobi.

I spent the two weeks before my departure feverishly siphoning through what seemed like hundreds of Pinterest pictures, trying to piece together my many fantasy-safari clippings into a coherent vision board. What appeared to dominate my vision board were inspirational pictures of luxury safari camps, romantic sunsets, and beaded jewelry.

I wasn’t sure how I would piece this hodge-podge collection of aspirational photos into an itinerary, so I decided to enlist the advice of a professional. I reached out to John of Natural World Kenya Safaris, and with his guidance, I arranged an all-inclusive 3-days, 2-nights Maasai Mara luxury safari and tour.

John and his team have been providing safaris and tours in Kenya for over a decade, and many of his guides have over 20 years of knowledge on the destinations they host the tours for. This instantly set me at ease during planning.

I’d approached three different tour operators, but what swayed me to go with Natural World Kenya Safaris was the communication. my surroundings keeps me alert and curious. After 20 minutes of stop-and-go traffic, George whips the van off the highway and we take to a dusty, unpaved road, which we are told is going to be a new highway bypass. Things quiet from their frantic pace out on the paved highway, and we get our first look at Nairobi as we cruise out of the city.

Leaving behind the relatively flat terrain of Nairobi’s urban sprawl, we find ourselves rolling up a harrowingly narrow, winding road on the side of a mountain. Our first stop is at a roadside tourist souvenir trap; or so we thought.

We embark from the van expecting that we are going to be visiting one of the many tin stalls that are built into the embankment of the mountainside, not seeing what awaits us on the narrow walkway that connects them. Just over the wooden railing lies one of the most spectacular views to behold: The Great Rift Valley. The sky is clear and the view is crisp; so crisp, it feels as though I am seeing as far and as wide as my human eyesight has the capacity to see.

George gives us a run-down of the historical importance of the area, as well as

the landmarks carved into the terrain. We take time for photo-ops and souvenir shopping, then pile back in the van toward Narok.

After a few hours of driving, we reach the city of Narok. We don’t know it yet, but this pit stop for gas and water will be our last moment of comfort until we reach our camp. Once we pull out of the gas station, we enjoy only a few more miles of paved road, before we are to endure three hours of rough, jagged, dusty, unpaved road. While there are arguably worse ways to travel, making the trek by van is tough. Scenic, but tough. As we finally roll through the gates of the game reserve, and onto the Sarova Mara Game Camp, my tension eases and my eyes glaze over at the sight of my new home for the next three days.

The Sarova Mara Game Camp is a literal oasis. It’s a micro-jungle surrounded by 583 square miles of open wilderness, drenched in the never-ending warmth of the equator. Set between the bend of a meandering stream, the camp features 73 tents laid out over lush green lawns. My accommodation would be in one

It’s 1:30am, and I have just made it past a health screening booth and customs. My expedition with Natural World Kenya Safaris is not set to begin until 6:30am, so I bide my time wandering around the airport. I spend some of my time at the Orange Kenya mobile phone stand getting a SIM card, and the other half of my time chatting with a friend I made on the flight in. As 6:30 approaches, I rallyup my group and wander outside to the passenger arrivals pick-up area, where we are to meet our tour guide. No sooner than we step onto the curb, a green van slowly creeps by with my name in the window. Although we have been flying and transiting for almost 23 hours at this point, seeing that van ignited a reserve of energy none of us knew we had, as we excitedly and emphatically flag him down.

The van stopped instantaneously, and a head popped out of the window. “Jambo! Welcome home,” George says, as he relieves us of our bags and our anticipation.

Today, we will be making the journey from Nairobi to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve, approximately 180 miles west of Nairobi. I’m told that this drive will take 5-6 hours, but something inside of me tells me that Nairobi traffic says differently. It’s 7am, and we are in bumper-to-bumper highway traffic. This is not your typical American rush hour traffic—a concrete sea of metal and rubber going nowhere fast—there is actual rushing happening here. Endless clusters of pedestrians walk the shoulder of the highway, en route to work or school, and drivers on motorcycles are whizzing in-between cars as they haphazardly rush to their destination. While my inclination is to give in to the sleep that is weighing on my eyelids, the energy from

My walk from the reception desk took me past the massive patio of the on-site restaurant, across the lawns, over the charming pond crossing, and up a gentle hill, where a deluxe tent—built upon a wooden deck—was awaiting my arrival. The inside of the tent was beautifully and tastefully appointed with what one would expect of a safari themed room: handmade headboard, impossibly white bed linens, tribal artifacts, and an antique writing desk. While the sleeping quarters were a sight to behold, the bathroom managed to be even more impressive. It had an expansive shower, a 2-sink marble vanity, a separate throne room, all being lit from the windows set between the 10-foot high exposed rafters.

We settle for the night, and awaken to the sound of Mother Nature. It’s an hour and a half before we are expected to meet with George again for our morning game drive. The restaurant has set out an expansive selection for breakfast. There is a sous chef cutting fresh WBM | 108 mangos, pineapples, passion fruits, and a bevy of other

tropical fruits. A parade of hot dishes, complete with an omelette station are also awaiting us. “Good morning! How was your rest?” I look up from my plate, glancing first at the name tag, as I make my way to Larry’s eyes. You can read the authenticity in his question. “I barely slept! I couldn’t wait to wake up!” Larry is as excited to hear about my life in New York City as much as I am excited to hear about his life in Kenya. A few minutes later, I had a hot omelette and a new friend, whom I exchanged small talk and Facebook invites with over the course of the next three days.

The next three days don’t require much explanation, lest I bore you with neverending and redundant superlatives. We spend our mornings and evenings on game drives throughout the mara. As we inch toward the gate leading into the reserve, we stand under the canopy of the cruiser, and stare in complete awe and silence at the watercolor painting forming in the sky. Hues of indigo, purple, orange, and yellow paint the sky like melted sherbet in a Heavenly ombre of which my eyes have never seen before. As the sun continues to rise, the mara

begins to come to life. With our cameras attached to our palms like nature grew them, we cruise along as George narrates. Zebra, giraffe, impala, lions, hippo, and even the elusive cheetah cross our path. As we end the drive on our last day, we pass an emaciated, deceased calf being picked-over by vultures, and immediately a song comes to mind. “Ingonyama nengw' enamabala,” I cry out in my wretched, untrained singing voice. Everyone takes the cue, and we begin our horribly cliche rendition of The Lion King’s “Circle of Life.”

Our final stop is to a traditional Maasai village just outside the main gate of the reserve. When we arrive, we are greeted by Morris. Our eyes meet, and he appears to study us for a moment as we make our greetings. As we journey toward the entrance of the village, we start to attract the attention of the children playing. “What’s up?” “Hello!” I’m instantly made aware of my romanticized assumptions of what visiting a Maasai village in 2015 would be like. It’s clear that these kids are hip to English slang, by way of the international guests who visit their home. I stick out my hand for a fist bump, and we both break into

unbreakable smiles. Once we are inside the village quarters, we are greeted by the women of the village, who induct our female travelers into their chorus line, as they sing us an enchanting welcome song. Inclusion is paramount here. As the women’s welcome song concludes, we are surrounded by the young men of the village, and they eagerly grab the men of our group to join them in a welcome dance. It’s all surreal. Standing there, watching the boys spring from the ground like gravity was of no consideration was indescribable. It’s something I’d seen documented on television many times, but nothing prepared me for what it felt like to be a part of it. It’s like I was standing outside of myself, watching me enact my dreams in real time. It was the end of my journey, but it was the igniting moment of clarity. I did it! I lived my childhood fantasy, but with the satisfaction that can only come from a lifetime of anticipation.

Morocco is located on the northwest coast of Africa and has ports in the North Atlantic Ocean as well as the Mediterranean Sea. It is the third most populous Arab country. Morocco shares the largest part of its border with Algeria to the East and Western Sahara to the South. The capital of Morocco is Rabat and its largest city is Casablanca.

My first mistake about Morocco was thinking that it being a Muslim country, geographically, made it a Middle Eastern territory. A huge mistake; it’s in Africa – North Africa to be exact.

Although colonized by the French, Morocco’s main language is Arabic, but French is its second language, followed by English.

Now, How to Travel to Morocco?

Casablanca Tours As a seasoned traveler, my preference is having numerous options, particularly when I know I have a budget. Of course, even when you have a budget it doesn’t mean that you want to have to minimize your experiences. However, as you consider your trip, think about the time of year you want to travel and the best options for how you will get from here to there.

We opted to utilize the experience of a tour company: Casablanca Tours and received first class service from the moment we boarded the plane to the arrival at our destination as part of their private tour package.

As you can imagine, the first leg of any trip is the mode of travel and your choice of airline and whether you sit in coach, business or first class begins your experience. Once we arrived in Morocco our driver was

Beautiful. As we drove through the city we were mesmerized. My mouth was wide open, and my eyes were afraid to blink for fear I might miss something. We almost forgot to pick up our cameras to capture the very essence of this country. As we pulled up to our first hotel, I am overtaken with emotion by the beauty and the scenery.

Moroccan Commitment to Service From the moment the car pulled up, both the driver and bellman struggled to assist us with our luggage. Our comfort was their priority.

As we walked into the lobby, like magic the “butler” immediately offered us tea. Not just any old tea, Moroccan mint tea, loose tea, which was absolutely divine. You will never tire of this lovely touch of hospitality nor their delightful teas.

While our magnificent visit to Morocco may have been brief, we had the luxury of visiting a variety of hotels from the very intimate to the very lavish and one better than the next.

If you were to ask me to recommend a hotel I would honestly have to say check your wallet and plan accordingly.

Lasting Memories – Royal Deserts of Morocco Enchanting and poetic are two words that immediately come to mind when describing Morocco.

Too often when we think of traveling to other continents we think about the distance and the length of time it is going to take to get there. I wonder if we might even talk ourselves out of a trip because of one simple word –distance.

Well, Morocco is to the Europeans as the Caribbean is to North America.

Interestingly, the flight to Morocco can be compared to a flight to Los Angeles, LAX from New York, JFK; six hours going maybe seven back.

with the color of the golden sun, the earth is that of red clay and the slight glimpse of the reflection of the sky often seemed to never end from one shade of blue to another, making it impossible to choose which shade of blue suits your spirit.

The spirit of Morocco is in its natural beauty; it is reflected in their design, art and people. I can only speculate that it is those very natural resources that entice so many others before me to visit Morocco.

Moroccan history tells of the constant invasions and mixing of population. This explains how big of a role diversity plays with its people, either culturally, spiritually and visibly. Morocco’s people are quite exotic to say the least. The beautiful Moroccans skin tones come in various shades and hues.

From the moment I landed on the ground I fell in love instantly and knew at that exact moment, that I would forever be attached to Morocco. The first thing I noticed was a sea of beautifully created people. The massage rooms are open, airy, and comfortable. But the relaxation “atrium” is the real winner, where you can indulge in fresh baked chocolate chip cookies or brownies (or partake of healthier fare like fresh or dried fruit and organic teas, if the big day is fast approaching), while reading a magazine on the numerous chaise lounges. “Our goal is to create a positive feeling in our clients with every visit,” said Karyn Lee, Spa Director.

The menu is extensive, featuring Lomi Lomi and Balinese massages, along with more traditional options. There is even an option for the Island Volcanic Detoxifying Therapy, which uses volcanic clay to detox and energize the body.

The flowing waterfalls in the background will instantly calm you, and the top-notch services will keep you at peace. I received a deep-tissue massage, and a soothing skin body wrap, both performed by Erin, where I was lulled into such a blissful state that I fell asleep multiple times. The facial, done by Miranda using dtox’s private-label products, left my skin and pores feeling clean and refreshed. All in all, it made for a perfect day of unwinding.

One of the acclaimed masseuses at The Spa is Saiko, who has worked on the likes of superstar basketball player Kobe Bryant, and the well-known circus chain Cirque du Soleil. Even when getting a deep tissue, the massage feels relaxing and calming and it loosened up some of my most knotty and troubled areas.

The skincare products they use for facials, along with the Darphin Paris and SkinCeuticals products they sell at this location are top-notch, and I still use a facial scrub I purchased there to this day.

But the real treat is booking and retiring to one of the hotel’s relaxing rooms with bay views from the balconies. The rooms are quite spacious with soft beds and luxurious robes. The hotel is a great place for a bride-to-be to stay, relax, and do some power shopping. The Fashion Island Mall is just across the street, featuring numerous high-end retailers such as Neiman Marcus (with Louis Vuitton), Bloomingdale’s, Rebecca Taylor, and even Bloomingdale’s Home Store and Restoration Hardware (for your registry, of course), all overlooking the ocean.

To add to the relaxation, the spa’s dressing rooms have both wet and dry saunas. And if you want to take home products their skincare line features all-natural, paraben-free, botanical skincare products for purchase. And for locals who are worn out on a Friday night, R.S.V.P. for dtox’s Friday Happy Hour they host every other month—serving organic wine and appetizers, featuring a live DJ playing music, and you can enjoy $39 mini-treatments, including hand and foot scrubs, calf and foot massages, and neck and shoulder massages.

My masseuse, Gina, was a miracle worker when she performed the La Vita Bella (The Good Life) massage. I highly recommend everyone try La Vita Bella massage, as it is perfection, combining aromatherapy, along with any level of pressure you prefer, and complimentary hot stones and towels. Gina is a master of discerning exactly where to focus her energy and time in your trouble areas, she even loosened the muscles in my hips, which is perfect for anyone with a desk job. But before the massage even started, we did deep-breathing exercises with aromatherapy oils while on the table. It certainly set the mood straight away and I immediately felt my muscles release and any worries about the outside world fade away.
