IMPACT REPORT www.worldbaseballacademy.com
A message from our leadership A busy year indeed! Our WBA staff began the year by navigating through limitations on capacity, frequent precautionary quarantines and a slower than normal pace due to the lingering COVID-19 pandemic. There was still a hint of uncertainty in the air. However, that all quickly changed in March as the outdoor season began at the ASH Centre. World Baseball Academy was able to utilize our first-class ASH Centre outdoor campus and its spacious 26- acres as a safe environment for a record setting year of impact! In fact, the common theme within numerous areas of our WBA operations for 2021 became “that’s a new record!” The newly renovated outdoor ballfields served as a home site to over 120 college and high school games setting a new record. WBA Tournaments hosted our first ever March Tournament, USSSA World Series as well as serving a new record number of teams over the spring and summer months. This resulted in a new record of economic impact reaching $2.7 million. Meanwhile, when we combine the local mid-week activities on the outdoor ballfields our organization surpassed 1,400 usages, which far exceeds our original projections and thus became….you guessed it…..a new record! The summer season was fast-paced, busy and primed with the forging of new partnerships. Collaborations with Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne led to the successful launch of the Badges for Baseball Program. Separately, new partnerships with Special Stars Clinic and Alternative Baseball allowed for our adaptive services to expand. Turnstone invited World Baseball Academy to create a wheelchair softball clinic session at the 2021 Endeavor Games hosted in Fort Wayne. All the while, our friends at Special Olympics, Southeast Revival Baseball, Little League, MLB Pitch Hit & Run and Smith Academy of Excellence were able to utilize the beautiful new fields. This was all at no cost through our On Deck Initiative for at-risk youth. Our team even launched our first ever summer STEM camp for area youth which received rave reviews! It was a busy summer! A very humbling part of our 2021 story was the corporate support of our WBA mission and vision. The corporate community stepped up in exciting ways to help us achieve a new record of involvement both in outdoor sponsorship and support for our 2021 Dinner on the Diamond Event. A new record of corporate sponsors was complimented by a new record of individual contributions as the launch of the WBA Wiffle Ball Spooktacular fundraiser helped attract 115 new donors. Friends, it was simply an amazing, record setting year for World Baseball Academy! All of this is not possible without the amazing support of our donors and volunteers! World Baseball Academy continues to be grateful to all of our donors, volunteers, board and staff for their commitment to serving our next generation of young leaders. The year of 2021 brought an array of challenges and concerns to our organization. However, our leadership team has utilized WBA core character values such as integrity, discipline and perseverance to make 2021 the most successful year in our organization’s history. Please consider standing with us and helping fuel our vision of developing leaders who positively impact our world. Thank you,

Note from the Board President As WBA Board President, I am proud of our organization’s vision of using the platform of baseball to develop our next generation of young leaders. The increasing growth of community support has been a tremendous encouragement to our board of directors and staff. In 2021, the ASH Centre campus was utilized in record setting ways while several new programs were successfully launched. Capital campaign contributions assisted with additional upgrades to the outdoor campus in the form of overhead spectator safety netting and expansion of irrigation systems. As a result of various factors, WBA was also able to increase our long-term sustainment fund. Meanwhile, foundation, corporation and individual donor contributions increased in support of WBA’s On Deck Initiative focused on mentoring at-risk youth. It was truly a year of growth! Of course, 2021 still had some lingering COVID-19 pandemic challenges. However, our leadership has been able to navigate the COVID-19 crisis with safety and care for the families we serve. The Board of Directors work alongside our CEO and staff to help create a committed team that is privileged to see our vision continue to grow. Developing leaders who positively impact our world remains our vision and passion. -David Kolpien World Baseball Academy Board President Raymond James Associates

ON DEck initiative World Baseball Academy strives to live out its vision daily, by developing leaders who positively impact our world. Our passion for developing young people inspires us to reach all kids, not just those whose families can afford baseball lessons and tournaments, or those who are physically or developmentally capable of mainstream competitive sports. That’s why we created On Deck.

Young people who want to learn more about baseball are paired with a knowledgeable instructor who cares about each student’s life beyond the game. These mentor instructors teach life lessons emphasizing WBA’s core character values. The importance that WBA places on these values is communicated to parents, who also find support and friendship from our On Deck Director. “The YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne is incredibly grateful for our continued partnership with the World Baseball Academy. For the second year in a row, the YMCA, Turnstone and the World Baseball Academy partnered to offer Adaptive Baseball, a program designed for those with physical, developmental and intellectual disabilities, as well as their siblings and peers. Participants learned various baseball drills and played the game of Quickball on the adaptive Cal Ripken turf field, an incredible asset to our Fort Wayne community! Volunteers attended the program weekly, providing incredible support for the participants. Everyone in our community deserves the opportunity to belong and achieve and Adaptive Baseball program provides just that! The smiles of participants and volunteers truly says it all and we look forward to another great season in 2022!” -Rebekah Coffey Director of Adaptive Services, YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne 11
“The World Baseball Academy has provided incredible experiences for youth with a wide variety of disabilities. The social and physical benefits provided through access to sports like baseball for youth are so critical to healthy development, especially when socialization options can be so limited during the pandemic. We are fortunate to have a partner like WBA who is passionate about our community and willing to come alongside us to empower youth with disabilities, developing future athletes and future leaders.” - Michelle Kimpel Director of Wellness and Adaptive Sports, Turnstone

Providing a “Home Base” In addition to programming partnerships, WBA is excited about new opportunities for facility usage partnerships as well! This year, we partnered with several groups to provide field access for their team/clinic to practice and play, including Special Olympics of Allen County, Alternative Baseball Organization, and Special Stars Baseball Clinic! These partnerships have given over 60 players a home base to practice!
“Through their partnership, World Baseball Academy has given the Special Stars Baseball Clinic a home base, an opportunity to grow, and the incredible chance to reach even more kiddos in our community with the use of their full size, adaptive turf field. We are so thankful for the generosity and support of World Baseball Academy and it’s staff, and look forward to making this annual event bigger and better each year.” -Kira Witte Director, Special Stars Baseball Clinic

Badges for baseball SUMMER CAMP
In partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne, WBA has launched our Badges for Baseball Program, a nationwide initiative created by the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. This camp creates a positive environment that helps strengthen relationships between police officers and youth within our community through baseball! Together with Boys & Girls Clubs, we hosted a six-week summer camp in June & July. This camp is a great place for kids to build friendships, learn WBA’s core character values, and of course play baseball. Additionally, camp is a time where WBA student interns & volunteers work on their leadership skills, guided by On Deck Instructor, Tim Petersen. Wednesday, August 25, WBA partnered with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation and Boys and Girls Clubs of Fort Wayne to host a one-day Badges for Baseball Clinic! Officers from Northeast Indiana came out to play baseball with 60 kids in attendance, as well as demo drones, K-9 units, and a variety of fun baseball stations! The purpose of the Badges for Baseball Program is to build positive connections between urban youth and police officers.

It is about so much more than baseball and sport, but about teaching valuable life lessons through sport. WBA’S STEM PROGRAM: This has been a monumental year for World Baseball Academy’s STEM Program! We hosted our first ever STEM Summer Camp in June, where campers learned about data collection, angles, speed, running an experiment, and got to use our HitTrax machine! We also formed a partnership with East Allen County Schools, and will get to bring WBA STEM into all of EACS’ fourth grade classrooms! Our STEM Classroom Program includes three classroom sessions, one session each focusing on science, engineering, and math. The program concludes with a field trip to WBA’s ASH Centre which both gets kids moving and has a focus on technology in WBA’s Baseball Lab.

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math... and Baseball! World Baseball Academy’s STEM Program is a way to connect with ALL kids through the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics of the game of baseball. Our fun, hands on “learning by doing” curriculum allows staff and volunteers to build relationships with young people while helping them become of aware of future career paths and WBA’s core character values. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are integral to baseball. Applications of geometry, aerodynamics, balance, gravity, velocity, transfer of energy, and math measure every movement of every player, creating endless statistical models that track progress and determine the elite. Baseball players excel when they understand what the numbers reveal and how the laws of physics apply to skill development and game strategy. STEM subjects therefore come easily to WBA’s baseball instructors, but that is not why World Baseball Academy includes STEM education in its programs. WBA uses STEM to ignite a desire for knowledge, a core character leadership value.

JUNIOR & LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE World Baseball Academy is also excited to debut the Junior Leadership Challenge, a developmental program for kids in grades K through 5. This challenge shows kids the importance of serving others and working towards a goal, having kids track volunteer time up to two hours. By volunteering and serving others, kids are demonstrating the WBA core character value of initiative. Once the student has reached two hours of volunteer activity, they write a two to three sentence reflection on their time volunteering and what they learned from it. The parent/guardian then sends the completed Junior Leadership Challenge to WBA, and the student receives a ceritficate and a free kid’s meal at Mitchell’s Sports & Neighborhood Grill!

From personal instruction with Tim, to Badges for Baseball, New Covenant, STEM day, and the Endeavor Games...Every time I saw WBA staff, interns, or volunteers working with kids, teenagers, or adults, it made my heart so happy! “The culture at WBA has been unlike any other work environment I’ve been a part of. Everyone is friendly, respectful, engaging, upbeat, and passionate about what they do. I always felt like I could approach anyone about anything and would receive a genuine answer. In addition, I always felt like I was part of the team here. The combination of always being able to ask questions along with the quality of work given to me made the culture here stand out amongst the other places I have worked in the past. Also seeing the behind the scenes made me realize how true the WBA is to their core message; Developing leaders who will positively impact our world. At the heart of every decision I’ve seen made has been the same: how does this impact the youth that come here?” -Brad, 2021 Intern, Sports Management
We asked our interns: “what does true leadership mean to you?” “Leadership to me means showing up for your team. Help where is needed even if it’s grunt work, your team needs a leader who isn’t afraid to show up in a messy situation as well as show guidance to the team that we will finish together” - Alyssa, Public Relations “True leadership to me is working with everyone and knowing how everyone should be coached. True leaders never make who they lead feel unimportant or as if their job has no meaning.” -Brad, Sports Management “I feel that true leadership is someone who takes initiative, and someone who leaves a positive impact on those around them.” -Adam, Human Services “True leadership is getting the most out of the people you are leading” -Torren, Sports Management “Leadership to me is showing responsibility and stepping up to the task.” -Deion, Sports Management “Leadership is having the integrity to lead by example and to be a mentor and teacher to others so they can have the motivation to follow you. A person must be committed to a goal that he or she will make every effort to achieve and lead a group to success.” -Nick, Sports Management 18
LEADERSHIP BEYOND THE GAME Letter from a student to On Deck Mentor, Tim Petersen: Dear Mr. Tim, When we first met it was a very long time ago. I think it was one of the summer programs for the Boys and Girls Clubs. We went to the WBA without knowing what was to come. I didn’t know that single program would lead to so much. If it wasn’t for Mr. Wallace recommending us to the Core 30 Program I wouldn’t have been impacted by you, impacted by the WBA. I’ve learned so much from you. As a person, I grew so much, before starting the program I was a very quiet person. Although I still am you have grown me into a leader. I wouldn’t think that I would be putting in over 100 hours to give back to the community. But yet here I am, loving every second of each program I help you and the WBA run. You have helped me find a side I didn’t know I had in me. A kid that was very shy and quiet to a teenager who loved helping people and talking to people. But the best thing is, I’m being myself. If I didn’t have the opportunity that I did I don’t think I would be anywhere close to where I am right now. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be able to make a connection with you. I just wanted to say thank you for everything and that I will continue to grow. -Jackson, age 15, Core 30 Student 19
“WBA desires to be a positive influence in the life of every family that walks through our doors. We are committed to providing quality baseball instruction so that young people can develop their skills, thereby giving them the confidence needed to be successful on the field. We also desire to lead by example and create an environment of encouragement and strong leadership. We are committed to living out the core character values so that we can inspire the next generation to do the same. Together with you, we hope to see young people reach their full potential and be successful on and off the field!” -Melinda Petersen, On Deck Director

It is often a life changing experience for the participants who choose to embark on a week-long adventure of serving others through the game of baseball. An International Baseball Mission Trip experience has the unique ability to accelerate the personal growth process of an individual (Adult or Youth) who participates. 2021 Wiffle Ball Spooktacular Thanks to our Presenting Sponsor:
$30 K
October 24 marked our first Wiffle Ball Spooktacular fundraising event. This was a new type of event for WBA, with fundraising being led by 14 Team Captains in two different divisions. Each team fundraised independently, then competed in a fun, fast-paced wiffle ball tournament at the event. This event was a definite success, raising over $30,000 for WBA’s On Deck Initiative, serving 1,000+ at-risk or underserved youth ages 5-18 each year!

IN REMEMBERANCE OF As we journey through the year of 2021, we also want to pause and remember the individuals whose light now shines among us in a different way. Their impact will continue to be felt for years to come. We want to honor our WBA friends who are no longer with us today. •Todd Haines | 1958-2021 | Todd was an early adopter of our WBA vision, long-term donor and the ultimate encourager to our leadership. •Brenda Mann | 1948-2021 | Brenda and the Mann family have been game changers for WBA and our International Missions Outreach. •Tim Wedge | 1940-2021 | Tim and the Wedge family have been long-term supporters and friends to our WBA impact on the life of kids. •Austin Neal | 1990-2021 | Austin served in various roles as a former WBA employee and friend. His positive attitude and energy for others will be missed. •Donald McArdle | 1935 - 2021 | Don was an early adopter to our WBA Capital Campaign and such a supporter to so many things in our community.
