Katchina doll USA Arizona Hopi Early to mid 20th century H. 17 cm Wood This Katchina doll is collected by the present owner in the Philippines, where it arrived by an American soldier.

Tawa, the Sun Kachina is a representation of the spirit of the Sun, though he may on occasion be called the Sun Shield Kachina. He appears in a role very similar to that of Nakiachop or Talavai, standing to the side with a spruce tree in his left hand and a bell in his right. Also, he may appear in a Mixed Dance with the flute in his left hand that is associated with him in many myths.

Such dolls represent the spirit dancers that appear at rituals.

The masks shows a lot of use and has a marvelous patina on the outside. On the top was a piece of fur attached, with handmade metal pieces.

Zande Figure DR CONGO Zande First half of the 20th century H. 34 cm Wood A standing female figure with massive legs apart and the arms hanging free of the torso, arrow-shaped incised scarifications on the broad cheeks and flat, grooved coiffure, a mottled brown soft patina. This figure was used in the Yanda cult.
