The World Alternative Games Already famous for its unusual and quirky events, listed here in this brochure, Llanwrtyd Wells is now proud to present: The World Alternative Games 2014. The Coolest Place to be in 2014 (Lonely Planet). he idea for the Games was born after it was announced that London would be hosting the Olympics in 2012. As one of the greatest sporting events on the calendar, it seemed a wasted opportunity not to hold some sort of celebration in Llanwrtyd to commemorate this. And so, with this in mind, a small group of people came up with an idea – what about holding Llanwrtyd’s very own version of the Olympic Games, but with all the normal events thrown out of the window and replaced with an array of unrecognised and different events that are not part of the official Olympic calendar. These events have competitors who are just as dedicated to their unusual sports as their Olympian counterparts, and what better time to promote as many of these exciting and imaginative events as possible.

T

Enter the World Alternative Games. The first Games held in 2012 proved a great success with over 2000 competitors taking part in 35 events, from Worm Charming to Chariot Racing, from the Bathtubbing Championships to the Wife Carrying Championships. Media coverage was exceptional, with coverage in countries such as Australia, Russia, Argentina, U.S.A., Canada and New Zealand as well as all over Britain. The event was awarded with runners up spots in both the Powys Business Awards and best event in the Welsh National Tourism Awards. The 2014 Games is set to become even bigger and better with some 60 events now being planned for the two weeks, including World Alternative Games visiting the seaside, with events being held at Pendine Sands in conjunction with and inaugural events at both Whitland, St. Clears and Porth Eirias. There will be days designed purely for the youngsters, with child-friendly events such as Pooh Sticks and Rock, Paper, Scissors and taster sessions by courtesy of Manor Adventure. Events that are held every year in Llanwrtyd, such as the World Bog Snorkelling Championships and the Man versus Horse Marathon will also be part of the World Alternative Games in 2014 and there are a variety of cycling events to participate in. We are even spending some time down in Newport as the Under 16 and Under19 International Underwater Hockey Championships come under the Games umbrella. The World Bathtubbing Championships have their first round in Christchurch New Zealand in February and there are a couple more rounds during the lead up to the games, with round 4 being held during the event calendar and there will be other exciting ‘fun in the sun’ events taking place in Llanelli. The final round will take place in Cardiff International White Water Centre in September. The Games will be run under the ethos of the ‘Corinthian Spirit’. Although there are no plans to take away the competitive edge of the Games, with gold, silver and bronze medals being awarded for first, second and third placed competitors, it was agreed from the start that taking part should be what really counts, and that everybody who visits Llanwrtyd, either as a competitor or a spectator, should have fun and get as involved as possible. Everybody who takes part in an event will get a Corinthian medal too. We are also in the process of showcasing what Wales can offer with its Culture, Heritage and Hospitality with a series of evening activities to compliment the day’s competitions.

Cyflwyniad i Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd Mae Llanwrtyd eisoes yn enwog am gynnal digwyddiadau anghyffredin a gwahanol fel y gwelir yn y llyfryn hwn ac erbyn hyn, mae’n falch i gyflwyno: Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd 2014 Y lle gorau i fod yn 2014 (Lonely Planet) Daeth y syniad ar gyfer y chwaraeon i fodolaeth yn dilyn y cyhoeddiad y byddai Llundain yn croesawu’r Gemau Olympaidd yn 2012. Fel un o’r mabolgampau mwyaf ar y calendr, ymddangosai’n gyfle gwastraff i beidio â chynnal rhyw fath o ddathliad yn Llanwrtyd i gofio am hyn. Ac felly, gyda hyn mewn golwg, cafodd grwp bychan y syniad – beth am gynnal fersiwn unigryw Llanwrtyd o’r Gemau Olympaidd, gan daflu allan y gornestau normal a rhoi yn eu lle amrywiaeth o ornestau anhysbys a gwahanol nad sy’n rhan o’r calendr swyddogol Olympaidd. Perthyn i’r gornestau hyn gystadleuwyr sydd llawn mor ymroddgar i’w mabolgampau anarferol â’u cyfatebwyr Olympaidd, a pha amser gwell i hyrwyddo cymaint o’r gornestau cynhyrfus a dychmyglon hyn â phosibl. Ymgynigwch â Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd Bu’r Chwaraeon cyntaf a gynhaliwyd yn 2012 yn llwyddiant ysgubol gyda dros 2000 o gystadleuwyr yn cymryd rhan mewn 35 o ddigwyddiadau o Swyno Mwydod i Rasio Cerbydau Rhyfela o’r Pencampwriaeth Twba Ymolchi i’r Pencampwriaethau Cario Grwagedd. Gwobrwywyd y digwyddiad gan ennill yr ail wobr gyda ‘Gwobrau Busnes Powys’ a’r wobr am y digwyddiad gorau gyda ‘Gwobrau Twristiaeth Cenedlaethol Cymru’. Mae Gemau 2014 yn argoeli i fod hyd yn oed yn fwy ac yn well gyda thua 60 o ddigwyddiadau yn cael eu trefnu yn ystod y pythefnos dan sylw a hyn yn cynnwys Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd yn ymweld â glan y môr a chynhelir rhai o’r digwyddiadau ar Dywod Pentywyn a rhai agoridaol yn Hendy Gwyn, San Cler a Phorth Eirias. Cynhelir y rownd terfynol yng Nghanolfan Dwr Gwyn Rhyngwladol yng Nghaerdydd ym mis Medi. Caiff y chwaraeon eu rhedeg o dan ethos yr ‘Ysbryd Corinthaidd’. Er nad oes cynlluniau i ddileu ochr cystadleuol y chwaraeon, gyda medalau aur, arian ac efydd yn cael eu dyfarnu i’r cyntaf, ail a thrydydd cystadleuydd, cytunwyd o’r dechrau mai cymryd rhan ddylai fod yr hyn oedd yn cyfrif mewn gwirionedd a dylai pob un a ymwelai â Llanwrtyd, nail ai fel cystadleuydd neu wyliwr, gael hwyl a chymysgu cymaint â phosibl. vents are increasingly recognised for the many positive impacts they can have in areas such as community enhancement and tourism development. The World Alternative Games (Gemau Byd Arallddewisol) should be something marked on the calendar as a ‘must see’ event for 2014. Llanwrtyd Wells is located in one of the most picturesque locations in the whole of the UK and the good people of Britain’s smallest town will offer a very warm welcome to all. Whether you choose to participate in some of the activities or just watch others attempt to rise to the challenge, you will have an enjoyable time. I attended the inaugural World Alternative Games in 2012 and the second event promises to be even better. Dr John Harris Reader in International Sport & Event Management Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland “As a participant in multiple events during the inaugural World Alternative Games in 2012, I am well qualified to comment on the welcoming and friendly atmosphere of the Games, and I can confirm the reality of the outrageous imagination and game sportsmanship of the organisers who apply their ‘why not?’ and ‘can-do’ attitude to the concept of having ridiculous fun in a competitive arena. With a host of new loony events in this year’s schedule, the 2014 World Alternative Games is going to be an experience you will never forget, a legitimate opportunity for adults to re-live their childhoods and win medals for doing so, a chance for kids to dip their toes in an adult-approved world of lunacy, and a top quality comedy spectacle for onlookers. No other event comes close. Don’t miss it!” Regards Penni Harrison MSc “The World Alternative Games brings people from all over the world together to celebrate a range of sports that push the boundaries and make sure the benefits of sporting activity reach way beyond the normal range of people participating. The town of Llanwrtyd Wells has done a fantastic job in creating some wonderful new sporting events, like man versus horse and bog snorkelling and they have become famous around the world. It's all about becoming a champion, but having so much fun and making so many new friends at the same time. Some people have got bored of mainstream sports, or perhaps are turned off by sport because they think they are rubbish, can't do them and so opt out. Well the WAG caters for both sets of people...it enables those who want a new challenge to push themselves in new ways, like in the backward running championships, while providing new sports for those who haven't yet found the sport that they can do ...there are activities for all age ranges and abilities and what's so important, is that these games bring people together, having fun and all getting the social, mental and physical benefits of some of the sports that are not recognised yet at the Olympics or World Games. We all like to be a bit different and this will make you stand out from the crowd, for more go to my book Bushell's Best Bits.” Mike Bushell – TV Presenter and Author

“August 8th – 25th August 2014. Mark these dates in your diary ready for The World Alternative Games! At the home of World Bog Snorkeling and the famous Man versus Horse race, Llanwrtyd is to see its second event in 2014. This is the ultimate in weird and wonderful sporting events that include Worm Charming, Wife Carrying Championships, and underwater hockey to name but a few. First held in 2012 to coincide with the Olympic Games in London, the event was extremely popular and great fun. It is an excellent example of what our rural communities can provide, not only for our area, but for visitors from far and wide. With around 60 events to choose from, while not for the faint hearted, everyone can have a go!” Roger Williams MP Brecon & Radnorshire Liberal Democrats “Llanwrtyd Wells has truly established itself as the United Kingdom’s spiritual home for quirky and wonderful sports. In this modern world of Playstations and iPads it is great that Llanwrtyd is capturing the imagination of people from across the world to take part in events that get people out into our beautiful countryside. All done in the true Corinthian spirit of sportsmanship, inclusivity and participation. Good luck to all brave enough to take part!” Kirsty Williams (Assembly Member) I blame Mike Bushell! You see, it was him who first alerted me to the joys of 'alternative' sport. Actually, I wouldn't call it 'alternative' sport, more off-beat. It's where you can be competitive, but laugh at the same time, and sometimes make a fool of yourself while doing it. I write this with authority. I took part in a number of events during the first World Alternative Games in 2012. In all of them I privately wanted to win; each time I had great fun; and yes, you've guessed it: my efforts not only ended without success, but I regularly made a twit of myself. I still cringe at the memory of the scooter slalom: setting off down the hill with great determination, but within about 20 seconds me and the scooter were parting company. I had the embarrassment of dusting myself down and trying to make the most of a bad job - and I seem to remember the officials at the finishing line were still chuckling when I reached it! I was nowhere near the top three! But in the true spirit of the World Alternative Games, it wasn't the winning, but the taking part that mattered. And making a fool of yourself is all part of the fun! I love the World Alternative Games, and commend it to all. From bog snorkelling to Russian Egg Roulette; from Wife Carrying to Gravy Wrestling: the organisers put on a fantastic festival of fun that does Wales proud. Indeed, the organisers deserved all the credit they received for the event they put on two years ago. So much hard work goes on behind the scenes, and the success and international profile of the 2012 World Alternative Games was a tribute to the organising committee.

Rhageiriiau

The rest of the world loves seeing eccentric Brits at play, and it was no surprise that the 2012 World Alternative Games attracted so much media attention. From Russia to the United States, from Sweden to Australia, the journalists, photographers and TV producers lapped it up. Only recently I was in Dubai, and revelation of my association with the World Alternative Games attracted a good hour of conversation with fellow diners wanting to know more. It was with great relish that I talked about the Games, but also of the virtues of staying in Llanwrtyd Wells: great town, great fun, great people, great scenery, great camping, and great guest houses. And not forgetting The Stonecroft - my favourite pub! Yes, I love the World Alternative Games, and am proud to help the organisers promote both it, and Llanwrtyd Wells, to media outlets worldwide. And it is all because of Mike Bushell! A great mate, Mike has long since convinced me of the fun you can have trying off-beat sports thanks to the excellent reports he does for BBC Breakfast on Saturday mornings. Mike is also a fan and advocate of the World Alternative Games, and introduced me to the event, the organisers, and Llanwrtyd Wells. I was quickly hooked, and am sure the more the profile rises, so too will the number of visitors who flock to join in the fun be equally enthused. That can only be good for the well being of the area, and with it, the local economy. I have no doubt the second World Alternative Games will be another triumph. I commend the event to all, and can't wait to take part in plenty of events this year. My family are equally excited. Thanks for the introduction, Mike! Dw i’n sgrifennu hyn gydag awdurdod. Cymerais ran mewn nifer o ddigwyddiadau yn ystod Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd cyntaf yn 2012. Ymhob un ohonynt, ac yn dawel fach, r’on i eisiau ennill; ces i lawer o hwyl bob tro; ac ydych, ie dych chi wedi dyfalu’n gywir er fy holl ymdrechion, ni chefais unrhyw lwyddiant ond fe lwyddais i wneud ffwl o fi fy hun yn rheolaidd. Dw i’n dal i deimlo’n anghyfforddus wrth gofio am yr anffawd gyda’r scwter; dechrau’r ffordd lawr y rhiw gyda chryn benderfyniad ond ymhen tua 20 eiliad roedd y scwter a minnau’n mynd i gyfeiriad gwahanol. R’on i mewn penbleth ac roedd rhaid i fi wneud y gorau o’r gwaetha – a dw i fel fy mod yn cofio bod y swyddogion yn dal i led chwethin wrth i mi groesi’r llinell derfyn! R’on i’n bell o fod ar y brig gyda’r tri cyntaf! Ond yn ôl gwir ysbryd Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd, nid yr ennill oedd yn bwysig ond hytrach y cymryd rhan. Ac mae gwneud ffwl o’ch hun yn rhan o’r hwyl. Dw i’n caru Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd ac yn eu cymeradwyo i bawb. O snorclo’r gors i Rwlet y Rwsiaid â Wyau; o Gario Gwragedd i Ymaflyd Codwm Mewn Gwlych; mae yma Wyl llawn hwyl wedi ei threfnu ar eich cyfer. Derbyniodd y trefnwyr ganmoliaeth fawr am yr achlysur a drefnwyd ganddynt ddwy flynedd yn ôl ac yn wir, roeddynt yn haeddu hynny. Mae cymaint o waith caled yn cael ei wneud tu ôl i’r llenni fel petai ac roedd llwyddiant a phroffil rhyngwladol Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd 2012 yn deyrnged haeddiannol i’r pwyllgor gwaith. Mae gweddill y byd yn dwlu gweld Prydeinwyr ecsentrig yn mwynhau eu hunain a doedd dim syndod pam fu i Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd 2012 ddenu cymaint o sylw’r wasg. O Rwsia i’r Unol Daleithiau, o Sweden i Awstralia, roedd y newyddiadurwyr, y ffotograffwyr a chynhyrchwyr teledu wedi dotio’n lân. Yn ddiweddar, r’on i yn Dubai a phan sylweddolwyd fy mod yn gysylltiedig â chwaraeon Amgen y Byd bu fy nghyd – giniawyr yn siarad amdanynt am awr dda ac yn holi mwy a mwy amdanynt. Gyda chryn fwynhad y gwnes i siarad am y Gemau, ond hefyd fe soniais am rinweddau wrth aros yn Llanwrtyd; tre hyfryd; llawer o hwyl; pobl arbennig; gologfeydd godidog; gwersylla dymunol a lletyau campus. Heb anghofio’r Stonecroft – fy hoff dafarn! Ydw dw i’n caru Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd a dw i’n falch iawn i gynorthwyo’r trefnwyr i hyrwyddo’r chwaraeon yn ogystal â Llanwrtyd i’r wasg byd eang. A hyn oll o ganlyniad i Mike Bushell! Fel ffrind arbennig, mae Mike wedi fy argyhoeddi’n llwyr o’r hwyl sydd ar gael wrth flasu chwaraeon gwahanol a rhaid diolch iddo am hyn wrth iddo gyflwyno adroddiadau rhagorol ar gyfer y rhaglen ‘Brecwast’ ar BBC ar fore Sadwrn. Mae Mike yn edmygydd ac yn hyrwyddwr Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd, ac fe’m cyflwynodd i’r achlysur, i’r trefnwyr ac i Lanwrtyd. Mewn amser byr, ces fy swyno a dw i’n hollol ffyddiog os wnaiff y proffil godi gwnaiff nifer yr ymwelwyr a fydd yn heidio yma i ymuno yn yr hwyl a theimlo’n frwdfrydig amdanynt. Rhaid mai effaith gadarnhaol caiff hyn ar yr ardal a’r economi leol. Rwy’n hollol ffyddiog mai llwyddiant arall bydd yr ail Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd. Dw i’n cymeradwyo’r achlysur i bawb a dw i’n edrych ymlaen yn eiddgar i gymryd rhan mewn nifer o’r gweithgareddau eto eleni. Mae fy nheulu yr un mor gyffrous am yr achlysur. Diolch am y cyflwyniad, Mike! Cyn newyddiadurwr gyda’r BBC yw Peter Jones sy erbyn hyn yn bennaeth yr asiantaeth PR Red Alert Media.

Keep Wales Tidy:

“A beautiful Wales cared for and enjoyed by all”

K

eep Wales Tidy is honoured to be the official charity partner of the World Alternative Games 2014! A Wales wide environmental charity, Keep Wales Tidy’s mission is to encourage local action to protect and enhance our environment, contributing towards a sustainable future. As one of Wales’s leading community-based environmental charities, Keep Wales Tidy works to encourage people to value their environment and take responsibility for their local area. Our work aims to influence behaviour change through campaigns, environmental education and community engagement. Since we were formed in 1972, we have worked with a vast number of groups across Wales, helping them care for and enjoy our beautiful country. People are at the heart of what we do whether they are community groups, organisations, schools, local businesses or individuals wanting to make a contribution and see a difference in their local environment. Our real aim is to make neighbourhoods better places to live, to regenerate run down areas and instil communities with a sense of pride. The World Alternative Games is a fun way of supporting Keep Wales Tidy. If you would like to fundraise for us as part of your preparation in training for your World Alternative Games event or simply make a donation please visit Virgin Money Giving (http://tinyurl.com/odwc49q ) or contact Cath at catherine. moulogo@keepwalestidy.org or 02920 381736. Your support will be gratefully received and all funds will help Keep Wales Tidy continue our environmental work with thousands of community groups and hundreds of schools throughout Wales. Michael Sheen, Hollywood actor and Keep Wales Tidy ambassador said: “Our local environment has a huge impact on our health and wellbeing and how we feel about ourselves. We need to work together to restore areas and make them places where people want to go. I think that it’s important to be involved with a charity like Keep Wales Tidy, so that together, we can restore community pride and feel good about where we live. I’m especially impressed by the work done with schools and communities which supports and encourages people from all walks of life to get involved.”

The World Alternative Games Go West

Gemau Amgen y Byd yn Cyrraedd y Gorllewin

n exciting new development is in prospect for the World Alternative Games in 2014. The summer games will include two inaugural events hosted by communities in three locations in West Carmarthenshire. The Celtic Lowland Games is to be held on the 28th June in St. Clears. Taking its inspiration from the Highland Games, The Celtic Lowland Games will be a series of quirky events that celebrate the distinctive local characteristics of the town. 21st June – St. Clears 27th July – Whitland The exact programme is yet to be confirmed but the two day event will be the basis for a mini championship after which an overall winner will be crowned. The events will be focused around the heritage and traditions of both towns. The event at St. Clears will be focused around the local landmark known as ‘Banc y Bailey’ – the large bailey left from the time of the motte and bailey castle in St. Clears introduced to Wales by the Normans following the invasion of 1066. Events may even include the storming of the bailey by cross-dressing Rebecca Rioters tossing milk churns! Whitland’s events will seek to incorporate some of the funnier aspects of the’ Laws of Hywel Dda’, King of Deheubarth in South West Wales between 920 – 950. The term applied to a system of native Welsh law credited to him after its codification. Events at Whitland may require a fish, a horseshoe, a nail and a penny!

Mewn datblygiad newydd i Gemau Amgen y Byd 2014 bydd rhai digwyddiadau newydd yn cael eu cynnal mewn tair ardal wahanol yng Ngorllewin Sir Gâr. Gemau Celtaidd yr Iseldir - 28ain Mehefin yn Sanclêr Wedi’u hysbrydoli gan Gemau Ucheldiroedd yr Alban bydd y gemau Celtaidd yn cynnwys cyfres o ddigwyddiadau cwyrcaidd. Er bod y rhaglen heb ei chadarnhau bydd dau ddiwrnod o ddigwyddiadau yn sail i bencampwriaeth lle y coronir yr enillydd ar ddiwedd y dathliadau. Ffocws y digwyddiadau yn Sanclër fydd Banc y Beili – y darn o dir sydd wedi goroesi ers dyddiau’r Normaniaid yn dilyn y goresgyniad yn 1066. Ymysg y digwyddiadau posib bydd ymosodiad ar y beili gan Ferched Beca’n hyrddio staenau llaeth! Yn Hendygwyn-ar-dâf. Bydd digwyddiadau Hendygwyn-ar-dâf yn seiliedig ar rai o ddeddfau mwyaf cwyrci Hywel Dda, Brenin Deheubarth De Orllewin Cymru rhwng 920 – 950. Bu’r Gyfraith hon, a ddaeth yn enwog am ei doethineb a'i chyfiawnder, mewn grym yng Nghymru hyd y Ddeddf Uno gyda Lloegr ym 1536.

9th August - Pendine The World Alternative Games at the Seaside Pendine Beach is a 7 mile length of sand on the shores of Carmarthen Bay. For the first time the sands will be the location for two new events in the World Alternative Games calendar. Pendine Beach is famous for its association with speed and on the the 9th of August the sands will host a series of events based around speed racing and breaking records. However, it is highly unlikely that any land speed records will be broken as a result of these activities!

9 Awst – Pentywyn Gemau Amgen y Byd yn mynd i ddŵr y môr Mae traeth Pentywyn yn 7 milltir o hyd ac yn ymestyn ar hyd lannau Bae Caerfyrddin. Am y tro cyntaf eleni, bydd y traeth yn gartref i ddau ddigwyddiad newydd yng nghalendr Gemau Amgen y Byd. Mae Pentywyn eisoes yn enwog am ei gysylltiad â chyflymdra ac ar y 9 o Awst cynhelir cyfres o ddigwyddiadau wedi eu seilio ar y cysylltiad o raso a thorri recordiau. Mae’n anhebygol y caiff unrhyw record byd ei dorri yn ystod y digwyddiadau hyn! Y prif ddigwyddiadau bydd: • Tynnu gwraig ar hyd y traeth – camp yn gofyn am falans a chyflymder wrth dynnu partner ar fwrdd syrffio neu gwch bach ar gyflymder dros bellter penodedig. • Bochgochiaid dynol – cystadlaeuaeth “land zorbing” gyda rhwystrau. Y gemau uchod i’w cadarnhau

The main events will be: • ‘Land Speed Wife Pulling’ - a feat of balance for a wife standing on a surfboard or dinghy being pulled by the husband as fast as he can over a certain distance. Watch out for the obstacles! • ‘Human Hamsters’ – a land zorbing race or obstacle course. *To be confirmed: Other record breaking attempts will be held during the day involving the use of buckets and spades, and flippers. Well what do you expect? We are on the beach after all!

Llanwrtyd & District Heritage and Arts Centre

A

new Heritage and Arts Centre is due to open in 2015 in the former Congregational Chapel. Our vision is that visitors will not only be offered an enjoyable and interesting experience within the building itself, but they will also be inspired by the exhibitions to explore the surrounding area. Visitors to the World Alternative Games will be able to have a preview of what is in store by downloading Powys County Council's free Mid Wales Trails app (available for iOS and Android devices) and use it to explore parts of Llanwrtyd Wells. The trail (written by Dan Boys audiotrails.co.uk) explores the fortunes of Britain's smallest town, which people have flocked to since a poorly vicar drank from a stinking pond. Visitors without such modern devices will be able to pick up a leaflet that will allow them to explore the town and imagine what life must have been like years ago in a bustling Llanwrtyd Wells with more than 30 shops. This exciting project for the new Centre that will tell the story of Llanwrtyd’s rich and diverse heritage that has been brought about through funding from the Welsh Government Community Activities and Facilities Programme, Heritage Lottery Fund, Glasu, Powys Community Regeneration and Development Fund and Garfield Weston Foundation. More funding is still needed, especially from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to allow the Centre to be fitted-out ready for its opening in a year’s time. During the World Alternative Games the building will be open for visitors to look around and see work of local artists and some of Llanwrtyd’s History Resource Group’s collections. Worm Charming Championships

T

he Worm Charming Championships have taken place since 1980 and boast a World Record of 567 worms collected from a 3m square in 30 minutes (2009). The Worm Charming event was first devised by Mr John Bailey who was the deputy headmaster of Willaston County Primary School, Nantwich, Cheshire from 1961 to 1983. It is governed by the IFCWAP (International Federation of Charming Worms and Allied Pastimes) and their rules will be adopted by the World Alternative Games and include rule 18 which state that ‘worms will be released back to site only after the birds have gone to evening roost’. Rules are available in over thirty different languages and the organisers are always interested in adding to this total. For further rules, please visit www.wormcharming.com.

The Strongest Hands at the World Alternative Games – World of Grip

Y Dwylo Mwyaf Cryf yn Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd – Byd Gafael

hat man hasn’t worked on a firm handshake or squeezed that bit harder to impress? Feats of strength that exhibit great hand power are as old as men’s egos, having been contested in organised events since the WorldCard-Tearing Championships was staged in 1910 in France. Today it is a bonafide, fast-growing sport which is hotly contested around the world on various stages. There are 5 specific elements in a grip contest (Pinching, Supporting, Wrist, Crushing and ‘Grip’ strength endurance) which combine to prove the proponent with the strongest hand around. Opponent? Many events have great historical antecedents (such as the Half Penny lift, which is modelled on an old penny-sized steel coin that is jammed into a coin slot and has to be gripped and lifted with extra weight attached) and others will test you in areas where you didn’t even realise you had muscles! Join us for the Pro Men’s and Women’s classes to see the best athletes go head to head, or come and have a go at the First Timers’ class to get a taste of the action yourself. It is a kind sport for the newcomer as plumbers and carpenters who have never set foot in a gym have been known to hold their own against seasoned competitors. There are official British and World Records begging to be smashed as well! You can be assured of unlimited support and advice from the organisers on the day as well as loads of interesting and quirky facts and history – just turn up for some great fun and hopefully you can take home a medal!

Pa ddyn sydd ddim wedi gweithio ar ysgydwad llaw cadarn neu wedi gwasgu ychydig yn gryfach er mwyn creu argraff? Mae gorchestion cryfder sy’n arddangos grym dwylo mawr mor hen â ego dynion, ac wedi cael eu trefnu mewn gornestau heriol ers llwyfanu Pencampwriaethau Rhwygo Cardiau y Byd yn 1910 yn Ffrainc. Heddiw , mae’n gamp ddilys sy’n cynyddu, gyda chystadleuthau brwd ar lwyfannau amrywiol o amgylch y byd. Mae yna 5 elfen arbennigmewn gornest gafael (Pinsio, Cyhaliad, Arddwrn, Gwasgu, a chryfder a dycnwch ‘Gafael’) sy’n cydfynd i brofi’r cynigiwr gyda’r llaw gryfaf o gwmpas. Mae nifer o ornestau gyda gorffennol hanesyddol gref (fel Codi Dimau, sydd wedi’i modelu ar ddarn dur maint hen geiniog sydd wedi’i jamio mewn slot a rhaid ei afael a’i godi gyda phwysau ychwaanegol yn glwm wrtho) a bydd eraill yn eich profi mewn mannau ble nad oeddech yn sylweddoli fod gennych gyhyrau. Ymunwch â ni ar gyfer dosbarthiadau Dynion a Merched i weld y campwyr gorau’n mynd ben ben, neu dewch i gystadlu yn y dosbarth Tro Cyntaf i gael blas ar yr ornest eich hunain. Mae’n gamp caredig i’r newydd ddyfodiad gan fod plymars a seiri sydd heb fentro troed i mewn i gampfa yn enwog am ddal eu tir yn erbyn cystadleuwyr profiadol. Mae yna recordiau swyddogol Prydain a’r Byd yn galw am gael eu chwalu hefyd! Gallwch fod yn sicr o gefnogaeth diderfyn a chyngor gan y trefnwyr ar y diwrnod yn ogystal â llwythi o ffeithiau ac hanes diddorol ac od – Trowch lan am hwyl fawr a gobeithio y gallwch fynd â medal adref!

ollowing the exciting news that this sport is trying to become part of the 2020 Olympics in Japan, the World Alternative Games thought it could be given an airing at the 2014 games!! This is a sport that falls within our motto which is fun, quirky and outdoors and where we state that it is the “taking part that counts and not the winning”. Everybody can play Hide N Seek whatever age one is, and what better place to play this unique game than in our beautiful Welsh countryside. The rules are that two teams of 7 players are pitted against each other in a 10 minute match. In the first 5 minutes, half one team is given two minutes to hide within a area that measures 65ft x 65ft . The opposing team then has to locate and touch the hiding players and the second half mirrors the first. Full rules will be available at the games. The rules are the same for children under the age of 12, but the area measures 55 feet x 88 feet. One of the beauties of the sport is that it can be played pretty much anywhere. Prof. Hazaki set up the Japan Hide-andSeek Promotion Committee in 2010.

Chwarae Cwato Y n dilyn y newyddion cyffrous fod y gamp yma yn ceisio bod yn rhan o Chwaraeon Olympaidd 2020yn Siapan, roedd Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd yn ystried Y gellid rhoi prawf arni yn chwaraeon 2014!! Dyma gamp sy’n syrthio o fewn ein arwyddair sef hwyliog, hynod ac yn yr awyr agored a ble rydym yn pwysleisio mai “cymryd rhan sydd yn cyfrif ac nid ennill”. Gall pawb chwarae cwato beth bynnag eu hoedran, a pha le gwell i chwarae ‘r gêm unigryw hon nag yn ein cefn gwlad prydferth yng Nghymru. Y rheolau yw fod dau dîm o 7 o chwaraewyr yn cystadlu yn erbyn ei gilydd mewn cystadleuaeth 10 munud. Yn ystod y 5 munud cyntaf mae hanner un tîm yn cael dwy funud i gwato o fewn rhandir sy’n mesur 65 troedfedd wrth 65 troedfedd. Rhaid i’r tîm arall ffeindio a chyffwrdd y chwaraewyr sy’n cwato ac mae’r ail hanner yn adlewyrchu’r hanner cyntaf. Bydd y rheolau i gyd ar gael yn y Chwaraeon. Mae’r rheolau yr un fath i blant o dan 12 oed, ond mae’r rhandir yn mesur 55 troedfedd x 88 troedfedd. Un peth hyfryd am y gamp yw y gellir ei chwarae mwy neu lai yn rhywle. Ffurfiodd yr Athro Hazaki y Pwyllgor Hyrwyddo Cwato yn 2010.

Egg Throwing

A

n ‘egg’-centric, ‘egg’-hilarating and ‘egg’-citing contest of throw and catch – with an eggy twist! Keep your fingers crossed you don’t end up with egg on your face. You will compete in pairs and the objective is to throw and catch a raw egg between you without breakage; however, there’s a snag – after each round, teams must move further apart until there is just one team left standing with a whole, unbroken egg. Teams must wear safety goggles and may opt for waterproofs to protect them against the worst of the splatts. Teams start close together, with eggs being thrown cautiously between thrower and catcher. In this early stage, egg breakage is at a minimum as the missiles are carefully caught. As the rounds progress and the teams become further and further apart, breakage becomes more widespread, with more and more teams becoming splattered with egg. Various techniques can be adopted to try to avoid becoming covered in egg, but invariably the egg breaks anyway. The winners are those who manage to throw and catch the egg at the furthest distance apart. The winning team must smash their egg to prove that there has been no ‘fowl’ play. The World Alternative Games is bringing this great event to Llanwrtyd again in 2014 for all the family – just make sure you bring spare clothes!

Taflu Wyau Cystadleuaeth hwynod, bywiocaol a chynhyrfus o daflu a dal gyda throad y wyau! Croeswch eich bysedd na chewch wy ar eich wyneb... Byddwch yn cystadlu mewn parau a’r bwriad yw taflu a dal wy amrwd rhyngddoch heb unrhyw doriad; serch hynny, mae yna drafferth – ar ôl pob rownd, rhaid i aelodau’r timau symud yn bellach oddi wrth ei gilydd nes bod dim ond un tîm ar ôl gydag un wy cyfan, heb ei dorri. Rhaid i’r timau wisgo sbectol ddiogelwch a gallant ddewis dillad glaw i’w arbed rhag y tasgu. Mae’r timau’n dechrau yn agos at ei gilydd, gyda wyau’n cael eu taflu yn ochelgar rhwng y taflwr a’r daliwr. Yn y camau cynnar hyn, ychydig o wyau sy’n torri achos mae’r teflynnau’n cael eu dal yn ofalus. Fel mae’r rowndiau’n mynd yn eu blaen a’r timau’n dod yn bellach a phellach oddi wrth ei gilydd, mae’r toriadau’n mynd yn fwy cyffredin, gyda mwy a mwy o dimau yn cael eu ysgeintio â wyau. Gellir defnyddio technegau amrywiol i geisio osgoi bod ag wy drosoch, ond yn ddi-ffael mae’r wy yn torri beth bynnag. Yr enillwyr yw’r rheini sy’n llwyddo i daflu a dal yr wy gyda’r pellter mwyaf rhynddynt. Rhaid i’r tîm buddugol smasio’u wy i brofi nad oes dim chwarae brwnt wedi cymryd lle. Mae Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd yn dod â’r digwyddiad campus hwn i Lanwrtyd eto yn 2014 ar gyfer y teulu cyfan – ond byddwch yn sicr o ddod â dillad spâr!

Finger Jousting

F

inger jousting, is a sport where two consenting players square off in an attempt to prod their opponent with their lancing (right) index finger before the opposing player can. The competitors must keep their right hands locked in an arm wrestling fashion and not use their legs or latent (left) arm in an offensive manner. The competitors are known as jousters, and the act of touching the other person’s body with the index finger is known as lancing. The sport is governed by the World Finger Jousting Federation, formed in 2005 in LaGrange, Georgia. The Federation is known for its encouragement of healthy competition and exercise, philanthropic nature, and dedicated online community. Against performance enhancing drugs and all forms of cheating inside and outside of the arena, the WFJF has made continuous efforts to make sure that matches are played honorably, and events are a safe environment for the whole family. At the 2012 World Alternative Games Philip “Mr. Big” Large from Coventry, England won the Men’s Finger Jousting Championship, while Danitsja “Dani Banana” Kallendorf from the Netherlands won the Women’s title. Welsh Crempog

W

elsh pancakes - Crempog - are that bit different to the traditional British 'crepe' which we normally eat on Pancake Day every year. The pancakes are thicker, slightly risen and cooked on a griddle. How about joining us in a Crempog race? Yes during our World Alternative Games we are going to have a race around a scheduled course in our little town. If you fancy your chances beating (pun!!) your friends, then get your frying pan or griddle out and come and join in the fun. Don’t just wait for Pancake Day to come around again next February!!

Râs Crempog Cymreig .....Beth am ymuno â ni mewn râs Crempog – ie, yn ystod ein Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd rydym yn mynd i gael râs o gwmpas cwrs arbennig y nein tref fechan. Os ydych yn meddwl fod gennych siawns i guro eich ffrindiau yna cymrwch eich padell ffrio neu radell allan a dewch i ymuno yn yr hwyl.

Young Children’s Day

B

ring your children (up to the age of 11) to Bromsgrove Hall, where we will be organising a fascinating day of indoor and outdoor events which will be fun and quirky. They will be supervised by experienced teachers throughout, and at the end of the day they will be given a Corinthian Medal which states that 'Taking part is more important than winning'. Light refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

Diwrnod i’r Plant Dewch â’ch plant (oedran hyd at 11) i Neuadd Bromsgrove ble byddwn ni’n trefnu diwrnod pleserus o weithgareddau dan do ac yn yr awyr agored a fydd yn hwyliog ac yn wahanol. Trwy gydol yr amser, bydd athrawon profiadol yn cadw golwg ar y plant ac ar ddiwedd y dydd, byddant yn derbyn Medal Corinthaidd sydd yn datgan bod ‘cymryd rhan yn bwysicach nag ennill’. Darperir lluniaeth ysgafn trwy gydol y dydd.

Snail Racing

O

ne of our more leisurely events and of particular interest to the children, and I have to admit it receives good media coverage. Giant snails are encouraged to race down a short course by providing tit bits of food after the finishing line. The game is run, walked or even slid in heats, with competitors streaking into the final round on merit. Certainly a spectacle to watch, albeit with a beverage in hand and suitable seating for spectators, but nevertheless offering a chance to become a medal winner.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

T

his highly entertaining event creates a unique blend of fun, unbridled excitement, randomness and incredible tension. In fact, apart from the Olympic 100m final and a football penalty shootout, there really is nothing else quite like it to rival Rock, Paper, Scissors. The idea of the game is for two people to go head to head, using one hand to imitate either a rock (clenched fist), a piece of paper (flat hand) or a pair of scissors (two fingers in a V shape). Rock beats (blunts) scissors, paper beats (wraps) rock and scissors beats (cuts) paper. Perhaps surprisingly, the game is not just about luck and avoiding elbow cramp. There’s a lot of bluffing and putting out mixed signals involved too! Sally Raynes from Wacky Nation says ‘This takes the art of the gamble back to its roots, combining judgement, skill and a small amount of luck to get the ultimate buzz of winning. The best thing is that absolutely anybody could walk away as the Corinthian Rock, Paper, Scissors Champion.’

Pencampw riaeth Carreg Papur Siswrn Mae’r digwyddiad llawn adloniant hwn yn creu cymysgfa unigryw o hwyl, cynnwrf ddiffrwyn, antur a thensiwn anghredadwy. Mewn gwirionedd, ar wahan i ffeinal râs 100 metr Olympaidd neu giciau cosb pêl droed, nid oes yn wir ddim arall fel cystadleuaeth carreg papur siswrn, sydd yn gweld gwylwyr a chystadleuwyr yn selog dros yr ornest.

Rasio Malwod Un o’n campau mwy hamddenol ac o ddiddordeb arbennig i’r plant a rhaid i mi gyfaddef sy’n derbyn sylw da gan y cyfryngau. Mae malwod anferth yn cael eu hannog i rasio i lawr cwrs byr drwy ddarparu tameidiau blasuso fwyd y tu hwnt i’r llinell derfyn. Mae’r gêm yn cael ei rhedeg, ei cherdded neu hyd yn oed ei sglefrio mewn rhag-rasys gyda chystadleuwyr yn gwibio i’r râs derfynol are u haeddiant. Yn sicr dyma olygfa i edrych arni, er hwyrach gyda rhywbeth i’w yfed yn eich llaw a lleoedd eistedd pwrpasol i’r gwylwyr ond er hynny yn cynnig siawns i ddod yn enillydd medal. Bydd y gamp yn digwydd ar y cyd â champau hwyliog eraill.

Pea Shooting

I

n this competition contestants require accuracy and a steady hand as they shoot five dried peas towards a target twelve feet away, using only their lungs for power. Competitors use a variety of techniques. The highest sixteen scores progress to the knockout stage where competitors go head to head. Tension builds until the final pea has been shot. A great family friendly event where children have a great advantage. You can bring your own shooters, but laser shooters are banned! Or you can purchase plastic shooters on the day!!!

Saethu P^ ys Y n y gystadleuaeth hon mae cystadleuwyr ag angen cywirdeb a dwylo sad wrth iddynt saethu pump pysen wedi’i sychu at darged deuddeg droedfedd i ffwrdd gan ddefnyddio dim ond yr ysgyfaint fel pwer. Bydd yr un sgor ar bymtheg uchaf yn symud ymlaen i’r rownd ddileu, pan fydd y cystadleuwyr yn mynd benben a’i gilydd. Mae’r tensiwn yn cynyddu tan i’r pysen olaf gael ei saethu. Cewch ddod â’ch saethydd pys eich hun neu gellwch brynu saethyddion plastig ar y diwrnod, ond dalier sylw, ni chaniateir saethyddion laser. Dyma ornest deuluol gyfeillgar, gyda mantais arbennig i blant.

Golf Cross

G

olf Cross is golf with goals instead of holes and it is played with an oval Golf Cross ball instead of a round one. You use the same rules as golf (with a few exceptions and additions) and the same clubs, though you won't need your putter. Essentially you are still playing golf, it's simply that the target is now suspended in mid-air and every shot is pretty much going where you want it to. The goals which you are targeting are similar to rugby goalposts. You will be able to enter a competition set up to demonstrate this unusual and fascinating alternative to traditional golf. It is hoped that in 2014 we shall have a nine hole Golf Cross Course. Go to www.golfcross.org for more details.

Golff Croes

Golff gyda goliau yn lle tyllau yw Golff Croes, ac mae’n cael ei chwarae gyda phêl hirgron Golff Croes yn lle un gron. Rydych yn defnyddio yr un rheolau â golf (gydag ychydig eithriadau ac ychwanegiadau), yr un clybiau, er na fydd angen pytiwr. Yn y bôn rydych yn dal i chwarae golf, yn syml mae’r targed nawwr yn hongian yn ysr awyr ac mae pob cynnig yn mynd mwy neu lai ble yr hoffech iddo fynd. Mae’r goliau rydych yn anelu atynt fel pyst rygbi. Gallwch fynd mewn am gystadleuaeth wedi’i gosod i fyny i arddangos h fynd mewn am gystadleuaeth wedi’i gosod i fyny i arddangos y dewis anarferol a deniadol hwn â golff traddodiadol. Gobeithir yn 2014 y bydd gennym Gwrs Golff Croes naw twll. Ewch i www.golfcross.org am fwy o fanylion.

The Waterslide

T

his event was suggested by one of our local schools who took part in a project following our Games in 2012. The equipment is simple. We will have a sheet of DPC set on a gentle slope. Water will run gently down the slope with the possible addition of a well-known brand of washing liquid to lower friction. Competitors will then run from the starting point and launch themselves from take-off point onto the sheet. The competitor achieving the furthest distance will be declared the winner. Another fun, quirky and outdoor event to add to the portfolio which make up the Games and make it attractive to all ages.

Y Sglefr-Dd^ wr Awgrymwyd y gamp yma gan un o’n hysgolion lleol a fu’n cymryd rhan mewn prosiect yn dilyn Chwaraeon 2012. Mae’ r cyfarpar yn syml. Bydd gennym shiten o DPC wedi’i gosod ar lethr esmwyth. Bydd dŵr yn rhedeg yn ysgafn i lawr y llethr gyda ychwanegiad posibl o hylif golchi llestri enwog i leihau ffrithiant. Yna bydd cystadleuwyr yn rhedeg o’r man cychwyn ac yn taflu eu hunain o’r pwynt dechreuol ar y shiten. Yr enillydd fydd y cystadleuydd fydd yn cyrraedd y pellter mwyaf. Gornest hwyliog awyr agored hynod arall i’w ychwanegu at y portffolio sy’n gwneud y Chwaraeon ac yn eu gwneud yn ddeniadol i bob oed.

Pooh Sticks Championships

P

ooh sticks were first mentioned in ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ by A.A.Milne, in which Winnie-the-Pooh invents the game when he accidentally drops a pine cone into the stream and so devises the rules of pooh sticks. Of course, classic pooh sticks involved a bear, a piglet and a child called Christopher Robin throwing pine cones into a stream on one side of a bridge and rushing to the other side to see whose stick appears first. Whoever’s cone appeared first was the winner. Simple. In Llanwrtyd, during the World Alternative Games, pooh sticks is played a little differently. It is done differently not least for safety reasons. The main bridge crossing the River Irfon, which flows through Llanwrtyd, is a busy main road and it would not be practical to have adults and children rushing backwards and forwards across it to see whose stick has come under the bridge first. Therefore, competitors throw their sticks into the Irfon from the wooden footbridge a little further upstream. The sticks then float downstream past the aforementioned road bridge, and with the help from our friends in the fire brigade, who wade in to catch the sticks and then we announce the winners. This is a family-friendly event and adults and children can have as many goes as they like. There is a medal for everyone who takes part, and gold, silver and bronze medals for the winners to take home.

Pencampwriaethau Ffyn Pooh Crybwyllir am ffyn Pooh am y tro cyntaf yn ‘The House at Pooh Corner’ gan A A Milne, ble mae Winnie-y-Pooh yn dyfeisio’r gêm pan, ar ddamwain, mae’n disgyn côn pîn i mewn i’r nant ac felly’n creu rheolau ffyn Pooh. Wrth gwrs, roedd ffyn Pooh clasurol yn cynnwys arth, porchell, a phlentyn o’r enw Christopher Robin yn taflu conau i mewn i nant ar un ochr i bont a rhedeg i’r ochr arall i weld côn pwy oedd yn ymddangos gyntaf. Côn pwy bynnag oedd yn ymddangos gyntaf, oedd yr enillydd. Syml. Yn Llanwrtyd, yn ystod Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd, chwaraeir ffyn pooh ychydig yn wahanol. Fe’i gwneir yn wahanol yn bennaf am resymau diogelwch. Mae’r prif bont sydd yn croesi’r Irfon, sy’n llifo drwy Llanwrtyd, yn briffordd prysur ac ni fyddai’n ymarferol i gael oedolion a phlant yn rhuthro yn ôl ac ymlaen drosti i weld ffon pwy sydd wedi dod dan y bont yn gyntaf. Felly, bydd cystadleuwyr yn taflu eu ffyn i’r Irfon o’r bonpren ychydig yn uwch i fyny’r afon. Bydd y ffyn wedyn yn arnofio i lawr heibio i’r prif bont y soniwyd amdani eisioes, a gyda chymorth ein ffrindiau yn y Brigâd Dân, fydd yn mynd i’r dŵr i ddal y ffyn, byddwn yn cyhoeddu’r enillwyr. Digwyddiad teuluol cyfeillgar yw hwn a gall oedolion a phlant ymgeisio mor aml ag yr hoffent.Bydd medal i bob un sy’n cymryd rhan, a medalau aur, arian ac efydd i’r enillwyr i’w cymryd adref.

Russian Egg Roulette

T

his is a variation of Russian roulette with eggs replacing bullets, six in all, five half boiled and one fresh. Competitors sit at opposite ends of the table and receive their eggs. Each player takes it in turn to crack an egg on their forehead until one unlucky competitor, to his dismay, finds he has the fresh one as the yellowy slime trickles down over his face and body and the winner jubilantly progresses to the next round. A family friendly event with no skill required, just good luck. You will enjoy competing or spectating in this event.

Rwlet y Rwsiaid â Wyau A mrywiaeth ar Rwlet y Rwsiaid gyda wyau yn lle bwledi, chwech i gyd, pump wedi’u hanner berwi ac yn ffres. Mae’r cystadleuwyr yn eistedd bob pen i’r bwrdd ac yn derbyn eu wyau. Mae pob chwareuwr yn cymryd ei dro i gracio wy ar ei dalcen tan i un cystadleuydd anffodus, er ei syndod, ddarganfod fod ganddo’r un ffres, wrth i’r llysnafedd melyn redeg lawr dros ei wyneb a’i gorff. Gornest gyfeillgar deuluol, heb angen sgil, dim ond lwc dda. Gornest mwynhaol iawn i wylwyr a chystadleuwyr.

Multi Sport Time Trial

T

his will present all competitors to a timed event where they will be presented with a discipline from seven sports. Each competitor will commence with a 25 yds run from the start to the first challenge (Football) where they will have three attempts on goal, they then proceed to (Cricket) three throws at stumps, (Rugby) three passes to a target, (Golf) three pitch shots, (Tennis) three shots at a target, (Netball) three shots at the hoop, (Hockey) three shots at a target and then a sprint to the finish. This will be a timed event and each missed target will cost an addition of 10 seconds to the finish time.

Prawf Amser Aml Gamp Bydd hwn yn denu’r holl gystadleuwyr i gysstadleuaeth wedi’i amseru ble byddant yn cael disgyblaeth oddi wrth saith camp. Bydd pob cystadleuydd yn dechrau gyd rhediad o 25 llathen o’r dechrau i’r sialens cyntaf (Pêl-Droed) ble byddant yn cael tri chais am y gôl. Yna maent yn symud ymlaen at (Criced) tri thafliad at y stympiau, (Rygbi) tri phas at darged, (Golff) tri thrawiad at rhywbeth, (Tenis) tri thrawiad at darged, (Pêl Rhwyd) tri chais at y cylch, (Hoci) tri chais at y targed yna râs at s at diwedd. Barrel Rolling

A

t the World Alternative Games yet again in 2014! The race consists of four competitors pushing a firkin of beer around a loop course with the winner progressing to the next round. Gloves must be worn as the kegs can have sharp edges, but apart from that, we encourage fancy dress for this quirky event. There will be junior, senior and ladies only sections to compete within.

Rowlio’r Gasgen Mae pedwar cystadleuydd yn gwthio ffircyn o gwrw o amgylch cwrs dolennog gyda’r enillydd yn symud ymlaen i’r rownd nesaf.

Conker Championships

T

his event returns for the 2014 Games, with the aim of the event being competitors engaging in a conker battle and demonstrating their skill and ability in the event by smashing their opponents conker. Laces must be provided by the organisers of the event and must not be knotted by the competitor or tampered with in any way. At the start of each game, each competitor will be given a new lace and conker. The game commences at the toss of a coin, the winner of the toss decides whether they will strike or receive first. Each player then takes three alternate strikes on the opponent’s conker. The game is decided when one of the conkers is smashed. The competitors run in heats and the winner of each heat goes through to the quarter-finals, then the semi-finals and lastly, the finals. The overall winner receives a gold medal. Competitors are split into groups of men, women and children. There are three key officials: the Chief Umpire, the Ringmaster and the Stewards or Referees. The Chief Umpire ensures all referees are familiar with the rules and order of play. They have the final decision should there be any disputes. The Ringmaster maintains the agreed rates of play and ensures hold-ups are kept to a minimum. Referees help with all other necessary tasks to help make the event run smoothly and easily.

Pencampwriaethau

Concyrs

Mae’r ornest hon yn dychwelyd i Chwaraeon 2014, a bwriad yr ornest yw fod cystaleuwyr yn mynd i’r afael â brwydr concyrs, a dangos eu sgiliau a’u gallu yn yr ornest drwy chwalu concyr eu gwrthwynebwr. Rhaid i drefnwyr yr ornest ddarparu lasys ac ni ddylai’r cystadleuydd eu clymu nac ymyrryd â hwy mewn unrhyw fodd. Ar ddechrau pob gêm, rhoddir lasen newydd a choncyr i bob cystadleuydd. Mae’r gêm yn dechrau wrth daflu ceiniog, gydag enillydd y tafliad yn penderfynu p’un ai taro neu dderbyn trawiad yn gyntaf. Yna mae pob chwaraewr yn cymryd tair trawiad am yn ail ar goncyr ei wrthwynebydd. Penderfynir yr enillydd pan fo un o’r concyrs yn cael ei chwalu. Mae’r cystadleuwyr yn rhedeg mewn rhagbrofion ac mae enillydd pob rhagbrawf yn mynd drwyddo i’r rownd gogynderfynol, yna’r cynderfynol ac yn olaf y rownd derfynol. Bydd yr enillydd yn derbyn medal aur. Mae’r cystadleuwyr yn cael eu rhannu mewn grwpiau o ddynion, merched a phlant. Mae tri swyddog allweddol: y Prif Ddyfarnwr, Meistr y Cylch a’r Stiwardiaid neu Ddyfarnwyr. Mae’r Prif Ddyfarnwr yn sicrhau fod yr holl ddyfarnwyr yn gyfarwydd â’r rheolau a threfn y chwarae. Hwy sydd â’r penderfyniad olaf os oes unrhyw anghydweld. Mae Meistr y Cylch yn cadw at gyflymder y chwarae a gytunwyd ac yn sicrhau fod oedi cyn lleied â phosibl. Mae’r dyfarnwyr eraill yn helpu gyda gorchwylion anghenrheidiol eraill i helpu gwneud i’r ornest redeg yn llyfn a hawdd.

We will be holding two events at Llanwrtyd Wells and District Show that tie in with the farming theme of the show – woolsack carrying and hay bale tossing. Both events will be held on the show field during the show.

Woolsack Carrying

O

ur country show will act as host for the Woolsack Carrying competition where competitors will carry a woolsack around a designated course, aiming to achieve a Corinthian Gold Medal. Categories include men, women and junior team events. The aim of the event is for individuals (and/or teams) to demonstrate their strength and fitness by racing whilst carrying a sack full of wool – up and down a hill with a gradient that reaches around 1 in 4. • Woolsacks generally weigh about 60lb for men and 35lb for women. • A course of about 240 yards is run by the competitors. • The competitors run in heats – the winner of each heat goes through to the quarter-finals, then the semi-finals and lastly, the finals. The overall winner receives a gold medal. This event originated in the 17th century when it was thought that young drovers carried heavy woolsacks to impress young women. Today, an annual woolsack championships takes place in Tetbury, where the race is accompanied by street stalls, a funfair and entertainment such as music. The race has been run for 30 years in Tetbury. NB: A 1 in 4 gradient hill usually needs to be found for this event to take place! Not hard in Wales… Although for our event, the course will be held on flat and more even terrain in the show field.

Hay Bale Throwing

T

he aim of this event is for men and women to successfully pitch hay bales over a bar set at a certain height with the tossed bale having to hit an erected bell for the toss to be valid. Men and women’s events are held separately. The men’s event generally starts at a height of 7 metres and gets continuously higher, whilst the height for women starts at 5 metres. When the contestant’s bale fails to clear the bar, he or she is out. A pre-selected pitchfork must be used by all contestants – they cannot bring their own. This event is traditional in Scottish highland games and is common at country fairs and shows.

Taflu Bels Gwair Bwriad yr ornest hon yw i wýr a gwragedd i daflu bels gwair yn llwyddiannus dros far wedi’i osod ar uchder arbennig gyda’r belen a daflwyd yn gorfod taro cloch a godwyd er mwyn i’r tafliad fod yn ddilys. Cynhelir gornestau i ddynion a merched ar wahan. Mae’r ornest i ddynion yn dechrau fel arfer ar uchter o 7metr, gan fynd yn uwch ac yn uwch tra bod yr uchter i ferched yn dechrau ar 5metr. Pan fo belen yr ymgeisydd yn methu clirio’r bar mae ef neu hi allan Rhaid i bob ymgeisydd ddefnyddio picfforch a ddewiswyd ymlaen llaw – ni chaniateir iddynt ddod â un eu hunain. Mae’r ornest yn draddodiadol mewn chwaraeon Ucheldiroedd yr Alban ac yn gyffredin mewn ffeiriau a sioeau gwledig.

Cario Sach o Wlân Bydd ein sioe wledig yn gweithredu fel gwestai i’r gystadleuaeth Cario Sach o Wlân ble bydd cystadleuwyr yn cario sach o wlân o amgylch cwrs penodedig, gyda’r bwriad o ennill Medal Aur Corinthaidd. Mae’r categoriau’n cynnwys gornestau i ddynion, marched a thimau iau. Soap Box Derby

A

re you brave enough or mad enough to take on our own minor version of the Red Bull Soap Box Derby? Whether you do it for the challenge or for charity this could well be one of the highlights of our Games. We have tried to follow the rules set at the Red Bull event held in July at Alexandra Palace and indeed all over the world. (Red Bull Soapbox Race London 2013 – you Tube) Basically it involves amateur drivers racing homemade soapbox vehicles. Each hand made machine is to be fuelled by nothing but sheer courage and the force of gravity. Your aim is to design and build any outrageous soapbox dream machine to compete against the clock in a downhill race. As in the Red Bull Challenge teams will be judged on: Speed – obviously the fastest time will give a very good chance of winning. Creativity – of the machine and personality of the driver. Showmanship – racers need to dazzle with design, showmanship and ability to finish. Everyone participating in the event will need to gather a team of 4 people over the age of 18, build a car and drive it. Construction can be of any shape or material providing it meets the specification and needs to be able to move only on the strength of a push and the gravity of the hill. All machines should carry functional brakes and steering with brakes functioning independently of the steering and operate on at least two wheels. Vehicle dimensions: Less than 2m wide, less than 2.5m tall and less than 5m in length. Weight should be less than 80Kg not including driver. The vehicle should be at least 10cm above ground. Helmets must be worn, with full helmets recommended, long full length trousers, long sleeve top and gloves. Obviously these can be hidden under your costume. The vehicle is started with a push from two pit members and can contain driver or driver and co driver. The control is then up to you to down a course with bumps, ramps and a chicane. We strongly urge competitors to attempt to raise money for charity and welcome logos on the vehicles. Anyone wishing to enter is urged to contact the organisers to ensure we are not oversubscribed for this event. Good Luck and happy building

Yn debyg i’r Her Red Bull, caiff y timoedd eu beirniadu ar: Cyflymder – wrth reswm, bydd yr amser cyflyma yn golygu fod gennych siawns dda iawn o ennill. Dyfeisgarwch – o’r peiriant a phersonoliaeth y gyrrwr. Crefft arddangos – bydd gofyn i yrrwyr ddisgleirio gyda’u cynllun, crefft arddangos a’u gallu i orffen. Bydd angen i bawb sy’n cymryd rhan yn yr achlysur gasglu tim o

Caiff yr adeiladaeth fod o unrhyw siâp neu ddeunydd (yn ôl y manylion gosodedig) a bydd rhaid iddo allu symud trwy ddibynnu ar roi gwthiad iddo yn ogystal â disgyrchiant y rhiw. Rhaid i bob peiriant gael trefn frecio a llywio yn ei lle gyda’r brecio yn gweithio’n annibynnol o’r llywio ac yn gweithio ar o leia dwy olwyn. Dimensiynau’r Cerbydau: Llai na 2m o led, llai na 2.5m o uchder a llai na 5m o hyd. Dylai’r pwysau fod yn llai na 80kg heb gynnwys y gyrrwr. Dylai’r cerbyd fod o leia 10cm uwchben y ddaear. Rhaid gwisgo helmed diogelwch, argymellir gwisgo helmed llawn, trowsus hir, top / siwmper llawes hir a menig. Yn amlwg, gellir cuddio rhain dan eich gwisg. Dyn ni’n annog cystadleuwyr i geisio codi arian i elusen ac felly croeso i chi roi ‘logos’ ar y cerbydau. Os dych chi’n awyddus i roi cynnig arni, dyn ni’n eich hannog i gysylltu â’r trefnwyr rhag ofn bydd gormod o gystadleuwyr ar gyfer y digwyddiad hwn. Pob lwc a phob hwyl gyda’r adeiladu.

Whitefern String Band

W

e introduce you to a group of guys from Resolven and surrounding valleys and towns who have two things in common: They all own at least one instrument and they like to play them till their fingers bleed! The Whitefern Mountain String Band is a tight, dynamic band playing a mix of Bluegrass, Country and Irish music. The band offers strong harmonies backed by a powerful rhythm provided by the guitar, of Nigel Baker and upright bass of Mark Griffiths. Peter Jones’s banjo and Kevin Jones’s cajhon (Boxy drum thing!) give extra drive to the band’s sound. Liam Kealy’s harmonica breaks add further emphasis to the urgency of the bands energy. A couple of youngsters make up the rest of the band, in the shape of Sam Powell who plays the guitar and mandolin, and more recently Aneirin Jones on the fiddle-and anything else he can lay his hands on!!

Band Llinynnau Whitefern Hoffem gyflwyno i chi grwp o ddynion o Resolfen a’r cymoedd a threfi cyfagos sydd â dau beth yn gyffredin:Mae pob un ohonynt yn berchen o leiaf un offeryn ac maen nhw’n hoffi eu chwarae tan fydd eu bysedd yn gwaedu. ife carrying is a sport that originated in Finland a long time ago. As legend has it, a bandit named Rosvo Ronkainen led groups of men to steal women and other treats from neighbouring villages. The damsels in distress normally wouldn’t go willingly so they had to be carried. In preparation for the raids, Mr Ronkainen would make his minions prove their worth; that is, display how fast they could run while carrying a woman. The fastest carriers were allowed to join the gang and participate in the raids. From this tradition of plunder and pillage, we now have the sport of the Gods! The WAG rules are simple: The course is 255 meters long and the winning couple is the one who completes the course in the shortest amount of time. There will be heats and finals. The prize for the fastest couple is the wife’s weight in beer! Couples do not need to be married and same sex couples are allowed. There is no minimum weight for the “wife.” Little people and dwarf carry is encouraged! Bonus prize for the husband who completes the course with the heaviest wife! Special prizes for fancy dress! The wife carrying party will include live music, loads of booze, and wife carrying enthusiasts from around the globe! Join us in Wales!

new event for the Games and originally developed in Argentina, but one that is certainly fun and quirky if not always outdoors in our lovely weather in Llanwrtyd. The game can be played by both male and female in the same section of competition with players playing 1, 3 or 5 sets of 11 points. The rules basically follow those of table tennis with the full set being available on the official website: www.PingPongo.com The choice of material objects to add can be agreed beforehand and proposed by each player. The standard option is to add ping pong bats on each side but square blocks and cylinders can also be used. Other objects that have been used are bottles, sandals, glasses, spoons with grains of rice etc. The choices are limitless but confined to 3 similar objects each side. Occasionally it is played with the table covered in salt! The game is fun to play with the obstacles adding to spectator enjoyment. Please try this at home and remember this could be your big chance to become a Corinthian Champion. Practice the imperfect.

e are creating a fun and alternative hula hooping scenario which incorporates shooting a ball into basket whilst continuing to hula hoop. The objective is to create a fun and memorable event that people of all ages can participate in and enjoy. To take part you must continue to hula hoop whilst catching a netball and promptly throwing it into a designated basket. Both organisers of the event will give a brief demonstration on the hoop before competitors take part. The hoop must be in full motion when the competitor shoots the netball into the basket which will be situated at a set distance away from the person hula hooping. Each person will have 10 attempts, and remember if the hula hoop drops below the waist at any point during the shoot it will not count! Good luck and get practising – see you in the summer!!!

Gravy Wrestling

A

nother crazy event to be held at the World Alternative Games in Llanwrtyd 2014. This is one of the world’s self-styled ‘craziest’ events, whereby contestants wrestle in a pool full of gravy! There is no other way of explaining it, and the title sums up the event… perfectly! Contestants must wrestle in bouts of two minutes in the gravy. They are scored by audience applause and on their various different movements. Entrants must be over the age of 18. The event is kept separate – men and women do not compete against one another. Contestants are encouraged to wear fancy dress. Points are added to your score for take downs, escapes, reversals, falls or near falls and the ‘fun factor’. Points are deducted if there is serious aggressiveness, roughness or unsportsmanlike behaviour whilst wrestling. Nobody under the influence of alcohol can participate. Dangerous holds e.g. locking hands or gripping clothing/headgear are illegal and not allowed.

Ym aflyd Codwm Mewn Gwl ych Cystadleuaeth gwirion arall fydd yn cymryd lle yn Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd 2014 yn Llanwrtyd. Mae hon yn un o’r cystadleuthau‘mwyaf gwirion y byd’, lle mae cystadleuwyr yn ymaflyd codwm mewn pwll o wlych! Does dim ffordd arall o’i ddisgrifio, ac mae’r teitl yn crynhoi’r gystadleuaeth... i’r dim.

Bouncy Castle Wrapping

fun activity inspired by watching people who have hired inflatables and proceed to wonder why they can never manage to roll the equipment back into its original size. This is a team event where competitors have to deflate an inflatable, wrapping it back into its original size as judged by the container it has to fit into. This again is a fun event designed to help people in their future. Teams will consist of 2 competitors. Toe Wrestling

T

his sport is a new one for the World Alternative Games. This event was originally devised by Staffordshire landlord George Burgess in 1976 and the matches involve players locking big toes to try to force their opponent's digit to the floor over a number of rounds. This sport is in its 38th year and the World Toe Wrestling Championship take place every year at the Bentley Brook Inn in Fenny Bentley. There will be an alternative strategy employed when this takes place in Llanwrtyd Wells in 2014.

Ymgodymu Bys Troed Mae’r gamp hon yn newydd i Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd. Dyfeisiwyd yr digwyddiad yn gyntaf gan dyfarnwr o Swydd Stafford, George Burgess yn 1976, ac mae’r gornestau’n golygu fod cystadleuwyr yn cloi bysedd bawd eu troed a cheistio gwthio bys y gwrthwynebydd i’r llawr dros nifer o rowndiau. Mae’r gamp yma yn ei 38ain flwyddyn ac mae Pencampwriaeth Ymgodymu Bys Troed y Byd yn digwydd bob blwyddyn yn Nhafarn Bentley Brook yn Fenny Bentley. Bydd strategaeth gwahanol yn cael ei defnyddio fan fydd hwn yn digwydd yn Llanwrtyd yn 2014.

Stiletto Racing

Y

ou will be racing whilst wearing high heeled court shoes. The distance is 60yds. Can you do it? There will be heats through to the final stages with the winner picking up a gold medal. Racers must provide their own footwear for the event, with the shoes having a minimum three inch heel and a heel base a maximum one quarter of an inch across. Boots are not allowed – only open toe shoes please. And yes, before you ask, men are permitted to race too!

Rasio Sawdl Pigfain Byddwch yn rasio tra’n gwisgo esgidiau ysgafn sawdl pigfain. Y pellter yw 60 llath. Allwch chi ei wneud e?! Bydd rasys rhagbrofol hyd at y rowndiau olaf gyda’r enillydd yn pigo lan medal aur. Rhaid i’r rhedwyr ddod â’u esgidiau eu hunain i’r ornest a rhaid iddynt for â sodlau o leiaf tair modfedd o uchder a gwaelod sawdl, chwarter modfedd o led ar y mwyaf. Ni chaniateir esgidiau - dim ond esgidiau ffrynt agored os gwelwch yn dda. O ie, cyn i chi ofyn, mae dynion yn cael cystadlu hefyd!

Mad Shopper

H

ave you always thought that pushing a buggy, with a pile of shopping is a piece of cake? Well, we challenge you to come and try it at this year’s World Alternative Games. We have a few conditions, however, such as wearing heels and carrying odd shaped consumables… This, together with pushing a pram with a ‘life-size’ baby/child therein and without tipping them out! Are you up for this challenge? You could even compete as a team in fancy dress and raise money for one of our this year’s various sponsored charities.

Y Siopwr Ynfyd Oeddech chi bob amser yn meddwl fod gwthio bygi gyda llwyth o siopa yn hawdd fel baw? Wel, rydym yn eich herio i ddod i’w brofi eleni yn Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd. Medrwch hyd yn oed gystadlu fel tîm mewn gwisg ffansi a chodi arian at un o’n elusenau noddedig amrywiol eleni.

Y

ou probably thought as you zipped around your office, from desk to water dispenser and back, seated aboard your office chair in a bid to amuse your workmates, that indeed this is great fun and a way to kill time whilst waiting for the working day to finish. But not for one moment did you think it might be your way to sporting fame! But now, the World Alternative Games bring office chair racing to Llanwrtyd and gives you the opportunity to put all your seemingly useless training into good use. The event will be run over two rounds and the competitor with the fastest accumulated time will be declared the winner. Each competitor should sit astride their chair and by use of their feet only propel themselves over Course A. The times will be recorded, in order. The next round over Course B will then be started by the slowest competitor over Course A, then the second slowest etc, until all those taking part have completed both courses. To make sure you win, just go your fastest!

Sack Fighting

T

he old favourite pillow fighting that we were never allowed to do as children. This event is on a best of three knock offs, with competitors having the added discomfort of sitting on a slippery pole. The winner of each round will progress towards the final with the glory of a Corinthian Gold Medal at stake. Fun for both competitors and spectators alike.

Mae’r ornest yn dal yn ei ffurf cychwynnol gyda lleoliadau lleol yn cael eu harchwilio fel y caiff cystadleuwyr y cyfle i syrthio i ddwr medal yn hydrach na gwely cwiltiog,

Underwater Rugby Match

A

s well as the Underwater Hockey, we are also proud to present Underwater Rugby! This sport is also played underwater, with two teams of six players trying to score goals with a slightly negatively buoyant ball (filled with saltwater) into the opponents’ goal. It is a fast and exhausting game – therefore, there are six subs on hand to replace their players on the fly. Once again this will be a spectator sport within the World Alternative Games, and for those watching it will hopefully be an exhilarating and exciting few games as the players battle it out to score goals and win! http://www.uw-rugby.org/what-is-underwater-rugby/

Gêm Rygbi Tanddwr Yn ogystal a’r Hoci Tanddwr, rydym yn falch o gyflwyno Rygbi Tanddwr! Mae’n gêm gyflym blinedig – felly, mae chwech chwaraewr wrth law i gymryd lle’r chwaraewyr sy’n hedfan. Unwaith eto, gêm i’w gwylio fydd hon o fewn Chwaraeon Amgen y Byd, ac i’r rhai sy’n ei gwylio gobeithio y byddant yn gemau cynhyrfus a chyffrous wrth i’r chwaraewyr ymladd i sgorio goliau ac ennill!
