A WORLD BANK STUDY ducation in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Comparative Analysis is part of the World Bank Studies series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank’s ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion. Education in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Comparative Analysis takes stock of education in Sub-Saharan Africa by drawing on the collective knowledge gained through the preparation of Country Status Reports for more than 30 countries. The analysis is based on a cross-country dataset that combines both administrative and household survey data to describe aspects of enrollment and student flow, disparities, out-of-school children, finance, management, quality, social impact, and the link between education systems and labor markets. The report provides those concerned with education in Sub-Saharan Africa with an analysis of the sector from a cross-country perspective aimed at drawing lessons that individual country studies alone cannot provide. The comparative perspective is useful not only in terms of showing the range of possibilities for key education policy variables, but also for the purpose of learning from the best-performing countries in the region. World Bank Studies are available individually or on standing order. This World Bank Studies series is also available online through the World Bank e-library (www.worldbank.org/elibrary).
