Simple and Easy Making your own homemade dog shampoo takes only a few minutes, requires the ingredients most household have and can save you loads of money while keeping your pooch clean and smelling fresh.

Dish detergents and vinegar are both extremely useful since they have excellent cleaning and deodorizing properties.

In a large spray bottle, combine 2 cups of warm water with 1/2 cup of white vinegar.

Add in 1/4 cup of dish detergent. Gently shake the mixture until bubbles form, then allow the bubbles to recede.

Wet your dog’s coat with warm water and then spray your dog with the homemade shampoo mixture all over his body and use your fingers to create a thick lather. Work the shampoo gently into his skin in order to clean it thoroughly.

1 cup of baby shampoo or nontoxic dish soap* 1 cup of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar.

1/3 cup of glycerine.

2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel.

Parvo Vaccinations Day Geraldton Dog owners in the Midwest and Gascoyne can take advantage of discounted Parvovirus Vaccinations at Central Regional TAFE (CRTAFE).

Parvovirus is a deadly, highly infectious virus that attacks the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular systems of dogs. The best method of protecting your dog against parvovirus infection is vaccination.

Adoption

Check out the dogs that are currently available at Geraldton Dog Rescue to see if your new canine companion is patiently waiting for you. If your dog preference isn’t shown, please contact 0400 219 719 and speak with the coordinator to let them know what you are looking for - because tomorrow the perfect pooch may turn up.

It is a requirement of Geraldton Dog Rescue that anybody who is considering adopting one of our dogs, completes a rehoming questionnaire over the phone with one of our coordinators. This questionnaire helps us to determine which dog will be appropriate for your home and ensures our dogs will be adopted into a home suitable for them.

“Rescuing a dog from a shelter is a wonderful way to give a dog a second chance at life, and find yourself a new best friend”. It is important that you select a dog that suits your family and lifestyle.

Central Regional TAFE Animal Care Lecturer Skye Humble said that students and staff were so pleased with the result of the last event that they wanted to make sure everyone who wanted to vaccinate their dogs had the opportunity to do so.

Those who are eligible will be offered two vaccines at the heavily discounted price of $30.00 and free microchipping.

Eligibility requirements include: • Owner must hold a Centrelink card, student card or seniors card • Dog must be under one year of age • Dog must have never had a vaccine before • Dog must be of good health A free transportation service (for the owner and their dog) is also available.

These events offer students and staff at CRTAFE hope to educate the community about the importance of vaccinating their dogs, and help reduce the number of puppies and dogs contracting parvovirus in Midwest and Gascoyne. It also provides CRTAFE’s Animal Studies students gain vital experience with a range of dogs and become more confident with animal handling.

4 easy step to build a dog house STEP

Just make one pallets board lay down on the ground floor to install the base of the Pallet dog house! Now select a set of accordingly cut down pallet lengths and put them together to build the sides, back and front of the dog house!

Leisure Buddies: A Leisure Buddy is a person interested in Leisure and Sport who can accompany you to your chosen activity.

They can assist you to get involved to the level you aspire to.

They also work with the organisers of your activity to assist them to serve you appropriately, and to make their facilities accessible. Our buddies are trained to assist you to achieve remarkable results.

Spin Out: Wheelchair Basketball: We regularly run a full basketball competition where you can join a team and compete in the Geraldton Amateur Basketball Association alongside the rest of the basketball community.

The competition runs in line with the regular basketball seasons of the association. Our Leisure Buddies are able to assist you to join and participate

Celebrating IDoPwD at TAFE What they do: They offer specialty bike / bike equipment for disabled people, such as bikes with spaces where disabled people can ride in the front or bikes better suited for people who cannot maintain balance in general.

What it is: International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is held on 3rd December each year.

IDPwD is a United Nations sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally.

It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

Each year the UN announces a theme to observe for International Day of People with Disability. The annual theme provides an overarching focus on how society can strive for inclusivity through the removal of physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people with disability.

Short term severe walking restrictions may be considered in exceptional circumstances.

The ACROD Parking Program deems a severe walking restriction to apply to a person who; walks less than 60 meters before stopping; and/or has a very poor gait pattern; and/or uses a complex walking aid; and/or experiences a significant health impact from walking less than 100m.

About the Scheme:

A Country Age Pension Fuel Card allows the cardholder to purchase up to $575 of fuel and taxi travel from participating providers. Eligible applicants live in non-metropolitan areas and do not need to hold a driver’s licence or own a vehicle.

Visit a participating country post office and complete and lodge the Country Age Pension Fuel Card Application Form.

The applicant will be required to produce their current Pensioner Concession Card when lodging the Fuel Card application form.

Telephone the Fuel Card Information Line on 1300 666 609 to locate your nearest participating post office.

Eligible applicants are entitled to one card per financial year. One card is issued per couple and cards are non-transferable. If cardholders remain eligible they are entitled to a new card every year.

What they are:

If you are on centrelink benefits and do not owe the governemnt money of any kind. you can apply for an advance payment for up to $1,250 for pensioners and around $500 for newstart applicants. To be eligible you must not have made a payment advance in the last 12 months and have had a residency for at least 3 months.

The payments will be deducted from your welfare at a rate of 1/13th the amount every fortnight for 13 fortnights (six and a half months).

You are required to pay it off even if you leave benefits, so be sure to make appropriate preparations if you do plan to fall off benefits or seek employment.

NILS provide up to $1,5000 in community circular credit loans to anyone who has a healthcare card or earns less then $45,000 annually. The money can only be used for essential goods such as white goods, learning equipment such as computers and textbooks and medical procedures. Requests can be made on a case-by-case basis.

Things like rent, bonds, bills, cash or holidays are strictly prohibited, though.

The Hardship Utility Grant Scheme (HUGS) provides financial assistance to Western Australians who are struggling through financial hardship and are unable to pay their utility bills. The purpose of HUGS is to prevent residential customers from being disconnected from essential utility services to ensure basic living needs can be met.

How much help can I apply for?

If you live south of the 26th parallel (south of Denham), you are eligible for up to $581 per financial year. If you live north of the 26th parallel (North of and including Denham), you are eligible for up to $962 per financial year.

You may be eligible if your Utility provider assesses you as being in the following situation: • You contact your utility provider to discuss your outstanding debt and you are assessed by your utility provider as being in financial hardship and not in payment difficulty; • Exhausted all your options with the utility provider and enter into a payment arrangement for at least 180 days to address the outstanding debt; and • After completion of the payment arrangement, if your outstanding bill is still more than $300 but less than $1,750 (or $2,500 if you live north of the 26th parallel) you may be eligible to apply.

Not everyone is eligible for HUGS, you may not be eligible if: • You have used all of your grant limit for the financial year; • You are a customer with bottled gas; • You are assessed as not being in financial hardship; • For Water Corporation, Busselton Water and Aquest customers, HUGS is only available for the • owner-occupiers of residential properties; • You live in an Aboriginal community and have your water managed by the Water Corporation.

How to Apply

All applications are made through your utility, so it is best to call them as soon as you are experiencing any kind of financial hardship to discuss your options.

As part of your application, your utility provider will need to work with you to achieve the following:

• Assessing whether you are experiencing payment difficulties or in a state of financial hardship; • Sign you up to the Utility’s hardship program if applicable; and • Set up a payment arrangement of at least 180 days.

If you have complied with the payment arrangement after 180 days and have avoided a disconnection or restriction notice, you may request your Utility provider to apply for HUGS on your behalf

If you are currently disconnected from your utility supply, you may be eligible for HUGS on the following conditions:

• You agree to pay the minimum amount required to reconnect your property (usually 50% of the outstanding amount); • Your outstanding amount is between $300 and $1,750 (if south of the 26th parallel or $2,500 if north of the 26th parallel); • You enter into a payment arrangement to repay the remaining balance.

Affordable make at home recipes with John Grecco

Mexican Gazpacho Ingredients: • 1 tbsp ground almonds • 2 cloves garlic • 1 tbsp oil • 1kg ripe tomatoes peeled seeded and chopped • 1 small onion peeled and finely chopped • 1 small cucumber finely chopped • 1 cup tomato juice • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar • 2 tbsp lime juice • 3 tbsp finely chopped parsley • 3 tbsp finely chopped coriander • Garnish fresh lime wedges fresh coriander leaves Method: • Combine ground almonds garlic and oil to form a smooth paste • Place tomatoes in a bowl add almond paste and remaining ingredients .Mix well taking care to crush tomatoes. Chill or 2 hours before serving.

• Serve in indivdual bowls . Acompany with wedges of lime and sprinkle with coriander leaves.

Ingredients: • 90g chocolate • 1 1/2 cups brown sugar • 3 large eggs • 1 cup oil • 1/3 cup cocoa powder • 315g beetroot puree • 1 3/4 cups plain flour • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda Method: • Melt chocolate • Whisk eggs sugar and oil • Add cocoa the chocolate and puree • Add sifted flour and baking powder • Fold together • Bake at 175 degrees celcius for 45 minutes in a water bath

Penne Alla Arrabbiata Calabrese

Ingredients: • 400g dried penne • 80g pecorino grated • 50ml olive oil • 5 cloves garlic peeled and chopped • 2 birds eyes chillies finely chopped • 400g canned crushed tomatoes Method: • Heat oil in a pan and add the garlic and chilli.

• Fry then add tomatoes and cook for about ten minutes until the tomatoes reduce a little • Heat a saucepan with boiling water.

• Cook penne Al dente, serve with sauce and pecorino

Thai Style Fish Cakes Ingredients: • 600g fish scraps • 200g prawn flesh • 2 tbsp red curry paste • 2 tbsp palm sugar • Zest of 2 limes • 2 eggs • 15ml fish sauce • 12 snake beans chopped • 1 coriander root • 1 lime juiced • 1 pinch of cracked pepper Method: • Blend the fish and prawns in a food processor • Soften curry paste in a bowl with eggs • Add the rest of the ingredients and blend • Mould into patties and seal on grill.

3. Palm your eyes by rubbing both hands together quickly for several seconds to create a mild heat. Close your eyes and gently place the palms over your eyes for a minute or so. Breathe gently. Repeat 2 or 3 times. If it’s hot outside, or if your eyes are burning and red, instead of rubbing the palms together, run your hands under cool water, dry them, and then gently place them over your closed eyelids.

Make an appointment with the Psychologist or Pastoral Care Team of Sun City Care for further assessments. Please allow 1 hour for this appointment.

Once we have your forms we will send

them out to the Staff of Wandalgu for assessment for suitability into the program.

With family accommodation for women, self-contained facilities are usually available for each family group, although they may still share the larger kitchen facilities if they wish to do so. Some places include meals in the room cost, while other places require that you provide your own meals. In many facilities you are also expected to prepare your own meals and ensure the common areas are maintained in a clean and tidy condition.

Is available short term to resolve an urgent crisis situation. If you have ongoing issues to address, you may want to talk to your assigned case manager about obtaining appropriate medium to long term supported accommodation. Generally you will be required to pay subsidised rent and key deposit up front when entering a crisis accommodation facility. Depending on the circumstances, you may be eligible for a Centrelink Crisis Payment.

Supported and transitional accommodation can be short term, but it is usually not provided on an ongoing basis.

By the end of the support period, clients are assisted to move to longer term accommodation such as private rental housing, community housing or public housing, depending on circumstances and needs.

First Home Owner Grant

The First Home Owner Grant (FHOG) provides eligible purchases with a one-off grant of up to $10,000. There are no income or assets tests to qualify for the FHOG. The current FHOG applies to new residential dwellings only and does not apply to established homes, vacant land, business premises, holiday houses or minor renovations to an existing home.

How to Apply

Bond Assistance Loan Scheme The Housing Authority offers bond assistance and two weeks’ rent in advance as an interest-free loan to help people obtain accommodation in the private rental market. Maximum loan depends on your circumstances. ​This loan scheme is extremely popular, with more than 10,000 loans approved each year.

If approved for bond assistance or rent in advance, the Housing Authority will give you conditional approval and a form for your prospective landlord to sign. You must return this form to the Housing Authority who will then confirm this immediately with your landlord and arrange prompt payment.

Alternatively, if you have paid the bond or two weeks’ rent in advance to the landlord or real estate agent, then the Housing Authority can refund this to you — but

you must apply within eight weeks of payment of the bond or rent in advance and produce evidence of the payment to the landlord.

The loan is repaid in regular payments of at least $25 per fortnight.

Applicants must meet Bond Assistance Loan Scheme income limits; not have assets above $2,500 for singles without dependants, $5,000 for singles with dependants and $5,000 for couples with or without dependants; and should be 16 years or over.

Rent cannot be more than 60 per cent of an applicant’s gross income.

Aboriginal legal services How it works?

The Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (Inc.) (ALSWA) provides legal representation and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Western Australia, including advocating in policy and law reform in submissions, at conferences and in the media.

ALSWA is funded by the Australian Government, through the Commonwealth Attorney General’s Department. The contracts between ALSWA and the Australian Government determine what work ALSWA must do.

The “boss” of ALSWA is the Executive Committee, made up of Aboriginal peoples from throughout Western Australia. Representing different regions of the State, each member is elected by his or her local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

You can apply to vote, or to nominate yourself for the Executive Committee, through your local ALSWA office.

Criminal law ALSWA provides a duty service at many metropolitan and country courts, which includes bail hearings, remands and pleas. ALSWA also provides representation in the District and Supreme Courts There is a legal advice service during weekday office hours. An assessing officer will apply State and Commonwealth Guidelines, a Means Test and a Reasonableness Test to all requests for assistance. The means test will take into account the income and assets of the applicant and any financially associated person, including a spouse or de facto. The Reasonableness Test takes into account the merit, the costs versus benefit/detriment of a case and whether it is appropriate to spend limited public legal aid funds on the matter. If granted aid, a lawyer will be assigned to represent the person. If a conflict exists, such as, a co-accused already has a grant of aid, a client can still apply and if eligible, be assigned to a different lawyer.​

Front Beach Geraldton has spectacular beaches catering for a variety of water activities including surfing, windsurfing, kite boarding, stand up paddling, swimming, snorkelling, body boarding, fishing or just relaxing.

The best surfing is between April to October when there is little wind and ideal swell conditions, while the warmer months between November to March provide the best wind conditions for the windsurfing and kite boarding enthusiast.

HMAS SYDNEY II

The HMAS Sydney II Memorial commemorates a tragic event in Australia’s military history — the loss of HMAS Sydney II and her entire crew of 645 men. HMAS Sydney II was the pride of the fleet and her loss was keenly felt by the whole nation in November 1941.

The Memorial in Geraldton was dedicated on 18 November 2001, on the eve of the 60th anniversary of the sinking. It overlooks the Indian Ocean where HMAS Sydney II was lost. The wreck was located in March 2008 off the coast of Western Australia.

HMAS Sydney was built at Newcastle-on-Tyne, the keel being laid down In 1933 as HMS Phaeton. She was one of three light cruisers of the British Modified Leander class, but was subsequently purchased by the Commonwealth of Australia and renamed HMAS Sydney II. She was launched on 22 September 1934 and taken over from the builders on 24 September 1935.

On 19 November 1941, HMAS Sydney, a light cruiser of the Royal Australian Navy with an impressive record of war service, was lost following a battle with the German raider HSK Kormoran in the Indian Ocean off the Western Australian coast.

The loss of the Sydney with its full war complement of 645 remains Australia’s worst naval disaster. The Kormoran was also sunk, but 317 of its crew of 397 were rescued.

The fate of the Sydney remains one of Australia’s greatest wartime mysteries; even the location of the wrecks was not established until 2008.

About the Trail

local favourite for a quick lap or three of undulating cross country mountain biking. You’ll also discover a skills park and pump track dirt jumps. Moderate level of fitness and experience required.

ost riders park at Spalding Park on the western side of the Coastal Highway and use the pedestrian bridge to access the north side of the river. Proceeding in a clockwise direction you head along the limestone escarpment with several tracks winding along the top but all going in the same general direction.

T

here are several bridges along the track that can be used to cross over to the southern side of the river and head back to the start. The southern side is lower lying on a clay based soil and tends to be a faster more flowing affair.

The scenic Ellendale Pool is located 45km south east of Geraldton. Surrounded by giant gum trees and a rocky gorge, it is an ideal picnic or camping location. The site has great facilities and dogs are welcome. The area is accessible to caravans, motorhomes, and camper trailers with a maximum limit of 7 days.

Seven Mile Beach

is located about 10 kilometres north of the coastal town of Dongara. The beach is about 3 kilomtres from the main road and access is sealed all the way.

There is a large parking area by the beach and self-contained motorhomes and caravans are allowed to stay, free of charge, for up to 3 nights.

There is a rubbish skip bin at the site but other than that, visitors need to be self-sufficient.

Boat launching is possible but the area can be very windy and conditions can change suddenly.

There is a 24 hour overnight rest area for self-contained in Dongara next to the oval and there is another 72 hour rest area south of Dongara at Cliff Head.

Spend a couple of nights in the picturesque heart of the valley. Located adjacent to the Chapman River on the Chapman Valley Road.

The camp site offers basic amenities including public ablutions, BBQ and several shaded seating areas.

Camp fees are set at Council’s annual budget each year. Vehicles are restricted to 24 hour stay.

Lighthouse Keepers Cottage Markets

When there is a 5th Sunday in the month, you will find the Lighthouse Keepers Cottage grounds a-buzzing with their Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage Markets from 8.00am to 12 noon.

Greenough Markets

The Greenough Markets are held a couple of times a year in the grounds of the Central Greenough Historic Settlement, just a 20 minutes drive south of Geraldton along the Brand Highway.

Platform Markets

The rear platform at the back of the Old Railway Station on Chapman Road comes alive on Saturday and Sunday mornings (8:30am to 12:30pm) with local produce and craft.

Witness the wrecks of HMAS Sydney (II) and HSK Kormoran as they currently lie, 2,500 metres deep on the ocean floor, in From Great Depths, a moving exhibit and 3D film.

Explore Beacon Virtua, a digital visualisation of Beacon Island in the Abrolhos Islands.

The Museum’s shop has a great range of souvenirs, gifts and educational items suited to all ages and interests.

Take a voyage back in time aboard the Batavia Longboat. On June 4 1629, a ships longboat sailed among the rocks and reefs of a small group of coral islands on the eastern fringes of the Indian Ocean. She was launched into the surf from the deck of a Dutch East India ship, and she spent the day ferrying crew and passengers ashore. By nightfall almost 180 people had been landed on a tiny island in the Abrolhos Archipelago, the ship was the Batavia, and she was wrecked.

The ship’s Commandeer, the Captain, and 46 other people sailed the longboat to Batavia (today’s Jakarta) for help, but it was 3 months before they returned.

Experience a little of this maritime history by sailing aboard the replica Longboat, or visiting the display at the Western Australian Museum-Geraldton.

The Longboat sails most Sundays from in front of the WA Museum – Geraldton, weather permitting.

Sailing is free (donations are welcome) children must be over the age of six and accompanied by an adult.

Geraldton Harriers Geraldton Harriers is a non-profit community organisation providing a fun and sociable environment to promote health and fitness. We organise walking and running events in and around Geraldton, Western Australia.

One of the world’s unique, rare and odd flowers, wreath flowers are not endangered but limited to small areas, can be found along the unsealed road near Pindar, east of Mullewa, normally in September.

When can I see the wildflowers?

The wildflower season is usually between late July to early October. The Geraldton Visitor Centre provide a Wildflower Report during wildflower season and can be accessed from the Centre or at https://www.visitgeraldton.com.au/ experiences/wildflowers.aspx.

There are a number of places you can see wildflowers in and around Geraldton.

Chapman River Regional Park

In the heart of Geraldton lies the Chapman River Regional Park with its vast array of flowering plants, bird and animal life.

There are over 300 species of native

plants throughout the Chapman River Regional Park, some that aren’t found anywhere else.

There are also over 120 recorded bird species plus 22 reptile and seven frog species. Kangaroos and echidnas also make the park area their home.

Guided walks along the river on the northern edge are offered either Saturday or Sunday by the Chapman River Friends.

Mills Point Lookout

Seven kilometres east of the North West Coastal Highway is the Mills Point Lookout that offers spectacular views across the Chapman Valley to the east and Geraldton to the west.

An abundance of wildflower species can be seen during the season including Damperia, Grevillea pinaster, Hibbertia and Melalueca.

More sites include Chapman Valley, Kalbarri, Tenendiwa, Mullewa, Pindar, Canna, Coalseam Conservation Park, Lesueur National Park and along Brand highway.

STUDENT FARE - $0.60 The student fare is valid for any travel on services from Monday to Friday from the first to the last gazetted school day of the year, and during mid-year school term holidays and on public holidays that fall on a weekday during the school year.

It is not valid on Saturday and Sunday. Student fares are only available when using a Student SmartRider, and cannot be purchased as a cash fare

FREE TRAVEL ENTITLEMENTS If you travel using a Seniors SmartRider or a Carer, Aged or Disability Support Pensioner SmartRider, you can travel free at the following times: • Before 6am, Monday to Friday • Between 9am and 3.30pm, Monday to Friday • After 7pm, Monday to Friday • All day Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Concession fares apply at all other times.

The period of free travel commences from the time of the initial tag on and runs until the completion of the transfer period.

During weekdays (excluding public holidays), if a tag on occurs between 6.00am and 9.00am or 3.30pm and 7.00pm, normal concession fare rules apply for that journey until the expiry of the two hour transfer period.

You will need to have Seniors SmartRider, or Pensioners SmartRider to travel free during these times.
