Great environmental odds

for coffee pods

I

f you’d prefer your used coffee pods be recycled into a bicycle rather than add to the burgeoning landfill problem, this is possible right here in East London.

parts, drinking cans and yes, bicycles! There’s also the added bonus of calming the needling guilt you’ve been feeling about adding to the planet’s environmental woes.

Thanks to coffee makers who have twigged onto producing recyclable pods and the city’s own trash crusader Monique Lottering, coffee pods can have a whole new life after they have dispensed your daily caffeine fix.

As a signed-up Smart WasteEd customer, all you need to do is to pop your used coffee pods in a container apart from your other recycling and hand them over at collection time.

Lottering, who combined her interest in cleaning up reusable waste in East London with her passion for helping the underprivileged by starting Smart WasteEd almost two years ago, has added the Coffee Pod Recycling Project to her waste collection services. Once your stash of recyclable pods has been collected, their aluminium component can be smelted and transformed into car

Lottering will ensure they are deposited at a buyback centre and donate the profits annually to a local charity. This year she has chosen His Hands Care Centre and has pledged to bless it with 100% of the Coffee Pod Project’s proceeds. If you are not signed up with Smart Waste-Ed, you can still be part of the Coffee Pod Project by simply dropping off your pods at any SA Home Loans* branch in South Africa.

*SA Home Loans, East London address: 4 Princes Rd, Vincent

Thanks to her tireless commitment to recycling and supporting charities, Lottering has been nominated as one of the prestigious Daily Dispatch/ Johnson&Johnson Local Heroes. Her business was triggered by the notion that her baby’s used Purity jars could have an extended lifespan. As her shelves began to groan with increasing piles of egg cartons, plastic containers, cereal boxes and other recyclable clutter, it dawned on her that she could help herself, charities and other like-minded East Londoners by hauling the waste to a buy-back centre. As more households bought into the convenience of having their recyclables collected, Lottering’s project

grew from her everyday vehicle crammed with collections to an initiative which uses unemployed women to sort recycling, make eco bricks and rinse out used coffee pods. And so, by paying R70 once a month for collection in East London and Gonubie or R100 per month for collection every second week in East London and R120 for two collections per month in Gonubie, you can rest assured that you are not adding to the world’s environmental burdens. • Depending on the size of the load, businesses pay between R200 and R400 monthly for weekly collections. • Call 071 392 8419 for more information or see smartwaste.el@gmail.com

WHAT’S ON MOTORING

SUZUKI ERTIGA TO CHALLENGE TAXI INDUSTRY By Gerry Gericke. SAGMJ e did not really become acquainted with the second generation Ertiga during the Media launch in Johannesburg recently, however we were fortunate to be allocated a unit for a week allowing us to really become quite attached to this 7 seater MPV. It was a little unsettling to be constantly flagged down by pedestrians on the side of the road who associated the Ertiga with a Taxi! Being a seven seater it is obviously aimed at the rapidly expanding Taxi industry. The Suzuki Ertiga is blessed with a very lively 77 Kw engine emitting a roar akin to a powerful sports car. More than adequate torque makes the Ertiga an absolute pleasure to drive, whilst featuring all the latest “Bells & Whistles”. We loved the suspension which soaks up the potholes and road imperfections encountered on our South African local roads. Our test car was equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox that was as slick as butter. Must say though, we always prefer the modern automatic gearbox featuring up to ten gears in some vehicles. To create a truly practical seven-seat MPV, Suzuki has stretched the Ertiga by 130 mm to 4,395 mm, while lifting the roof by 5 mm to give the vehicle a total height of 1,690 mm. The Ertiga is also 40 mm wider, which translates almost

W

directly into more shoulder room for passengers in all three rows of seats. With the seats up, the luggage compartment offers 199 litres of storage space, the load floor can be adjusted to two different heights. With the seats down, the large load floor space is more hard wearing and sturdier than before, thanks to metal plates in all the folding seatbacks. All Ertiga models are equipped with two airbags for front passengers and ABS brakes with EBD (electronic brake force distribution). Suzuki has also added ISOFIX-approved seat anchors for child seats, as well as a reverse parking sensor system on the GL model. LIKES: Build quality and space. Versatile engine. Air-conditioning for rear passengers with outlets situated above your head in the roof. Very quiet cabin. DISLIKES: Stability in strong wind! VERDICT: Suzuki is fast becoming a major player on South African roads thanks to its quality and reliability. This new model has already proved itself overseas and will no doubt be a hit in South Africa. The Ertiga will be a direct competitor against the Toyota Avanza, which is rear wheel driven resulting in a transmission tunnel to house the prop shaft thus impeding foot space. The other competitor is the Nissan Livina. Both these competitors are more expensive than the Suzuki. The Ertiga is available in 3 models, either GA or GL 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic.
