There’s something magical about a book of photographs, the expectation as you turn each page, the excitement and surprise as you look at amazing photograph after amazing photograph. This is our vision: to create a landscape photography publication that is so beautiful, every serious landscape photographer in the world will want to be involved.

And this is the first book.

It represents contemporary landscape photography in a wide context as curated by our esteemed panel of experienced judges: David Burnett, Jim M. Goldstein, David Ward, Jackie Ranken and Tony Hewitt. My role as head judge and chairman was to facilitate the judging process, but I did not take part in the judging myself. It was a pleasure working with the five judges, reading their views and admiring their professionalism. But don’t think for a minute that our judges agreed on everything. Far from it! For instance, there were five nominations for the International Landscape Photographer of the Year and it took quite some discussion to pare them down to a single winner.

And in many ways, this vindicates our desire to present the top 101 landscape photographs. While the prize winners of the 2014 competition are very worthy, I’m sure even they would acknowledge that there are a lot of other great photographs and photographers in this book that could just as easily have been in the winners’ circle. Photography is art and as art, it’s subjective.

So, by publishing the top 101 landscape photographs, we hope to fairly represent a wide range of the best landscape photographs without getting too caught up with the mechanics of a judging system.

Our first Award attracted 2233 photographs from 519 photographers. We had entrants from all corners of the globe, although it’s fair to observe a large proportion came from Australia and New Zealand where the competition is based. However, it’s our aim to broaden the entrant base over the coming years and, with our first competition so successful, we’re looking forward to next year already!

The International Landscape Photographer of the Year Award was developed by Nathan Oxley, David Evans and myself.

We all have considerable experience in entering and running photography awards, and we also have a passion for landscape photography. These awards seemed inevitable.

We also wanted to present more than just a winning photograph. While the first place International Landscape Photograph of the Year is breathtaking, to be named International Landscape Photographer of the Year requires more than a single shot. The Photographer of the Year was chosen from a portfolio of four images representing consistency as well as a spark of artistic brilliance.

We added in some fun special awards that might mean more to other landscape photographers than the general public.

But that’s who this book is for: landscape photographers.

Christian Fletcher lives in Dunsborough, the heart of the picturesque south-west of Western Australia. He cut his teeth shooting with black and white film – Christian set up a small darkroom at his parents’ place and spent hours mixing chemicals, making prints and learning from his mistakes.

This was before the internet, digital cameras and YouTube – and he attributes where he is today from the trial and error of his film days. Without the control offered by Photoshop, Christian says he learnt to get it right in-camera and this is so important for landscape photography.

He started selling black and white framed photographs through a local restaurant and from there

he soon picked up some commercial work, portraits and weddings. But after six years of working professionally, he was ready to give it up. A holiday was planned to get away and reassess his priorities.

On day two of the holiday, he met a woman with a photography gallery in Esperance. This was what he needed to see, to get enthused about photography again and to realise he had strayed from his love of creating landscape images.

Several months later, Christian set up stalls at the local markets and a small gallery space at the picture framer where he worked part-time. With sales increasing, so did his ambition to have his own dedicated space in Dunsborough. He also set up two further galleries in neighbouring Margaret River and Mandurah. The business Christian Fletcher Photo Images was born and he established himself as one of the country’s leading landscape photographers.

In 2009 he joined the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) and in 2011 was awarded the Western Australian AIPP Professional Landscape Photographer of the Year and also the AIPP Australian Professional Landscape Photographer of the Year. In 2014, he was again awarded the Western Australian AIPP Professional Landscape Photographer of the Year.

Today, Christian spends his time running the galleries, creating new images and teaching photography to people all over the world. His passion remains as strong as it was all those years ago.

He is constantly striving for perfection and changing direction to keep up with the latest advances in

magic abstract image that I had been visualising over the previous week, based on the colours and shapes produced by the fire.

“The burnt and black half of the photograph are the shorter bottle

brush trees, while the orange half with the taller scorched trees are the gums. I felt it created an interesting composition which I named Life and Death.

“The photograph was captured with a remote Helicam, a Canon EOS

5D Mark III, with a 20mm f2.8 ultra wide-angle lens.”

The International Landscape Photographer of the Year 2014 – Special Awards

THERE ARE SOME THINGS only a landscape photographer understands. Whether hiking across the tundra in the Arctic or slaving over a computer screen back in the studio, there are aspects of landscape photography that have become a part of our language.

Some of these aspects border on being clichĂŠ, yet we seem destined to persevere with them, struggling to resolve our aesthetic disposition with subjects that we respond to inately.

As part of the curatorial process, the judges were invited to

nominate images from the Top 101 that best represented some of these fundamental landscape milestones: blurred water, sunsets, piers and lone trees.

We also asked them to acknowledge a landscape popular with

photographers the world over. This year we chose Iceland.

So, while we extend a sense of humour with these Special Awards,

we equally recognise the brilliance of the winning images and the photographers who created them.

Making Prints

hotographers Glenn McKimmin and Danny Irvine are as passionate as we are about photography. Taking over from legendary Australian photographer Ken Duncan, Glenn and Danny have reinvented Created For Life, turning it into a state of the art facility that offers sophisticated printing, mounting and framing.

And naturally Ken Duncan continues to use Created For Life for all his own work, along with

other professional photographers like Mark Gray and Phillip Ayres. However, the new focus of Created For Life is to print and frame for everyone and readers such as yourself are invited to try its services.

Sending Files Most customers send their files to Created For Life via the internet and full instructions on preparing your files can be found on its website – essentially

you need to re-size your flattened files as JPEGs or TIFFs, depending on the size of the print you want.

However, many customers are also sending in their raw files, along with broad instructions of what they want the final image to look like.

Created For Life then works on the raw file and sends you back your finished file and print.

“A lot of people try Photoshop themselves,” explained Glenn, “but no matter how many hours

Photographic prints with an incredibly high gloss finish are made on Fujiflex Crystal Archive material and are printed up to 30-inches wide on a Lambda printer. This is the paper used by landscape photographers for many years to create a rich depth with vibrant colours, surpassing the old but popular Cibachrome (Ilfochrome) paper.

Created for Life also offers Fujicolor Crystal Archive in matte and lustre finishes.

Of course, today many of the world’s leading photographers are discovering the magic of high quality inkjet printing. Explained Glenn, “We exclusively use Hahnemuhle paper and we are aiming to be the first Hahnemuhle-certified lab in Australia. We use Epson Pro Stylus 9900 machines, offering prints up to 44-inches wide on the full range of Hahnemuhle surfaces.”

Created For Life also offers Chromajet Metallic papers and they will soon be installing an Epson Sure Lab, the most advanced dry lab in the world.

“This will open us to the wedding and portrait market as well, offering bulk printing at affordable prices.

“However, at present, most of our clients are producing prints for display on a wall. Some make five prints a year, some make 5000 prints, but

we’re seeing that the industry has changed a lot in recent years.

“It used to be that people would buy another photographer’s work to put on the wall, but now they want to put up their own photographs. The market has shifted to a DIY, which means not only do we need to offer printing, but mounting and framing as well.”

Seeing is Believing So, once you have a beautiful print, how do you mount and frame it? Created For Life has a myriad of ideas and options, from simple mounts to incredibly elegant frames from Bellini.

“We have changed the way you view framing.

Normally a framing shop is small and crowded with hundreds of samples on the wall, but it can be hard to get a sense of what is possible.

“At Created For Life, we’ve created a purposedesigned gallery that displays a range of frames and mouldings because nothing works as well as seeing the real thing hanging on a wall.”

For inkjet media, Gatorfoam is all that’s needed to produce a super flat surface. “Inkjet paper is thicker than Fujiflex, so it’s not going to pick up any of the irregularities of the backing board, and so it looks super flat on Gatorfoam.”

Acrylic face mounting can also look sensational on a wall, especially with polished edges and backed with Dibond up to 19 millimetres deep. And of course there is the popular canvas – there are lots of examples to choose from on the Created For Life website, including a series of small videos to give you a better feel for exactly what you’re ordering.

Judge DAVID BURNETT (born Salt Lake City, Utah 1946) learned photography at the Olympus High yearbook, and later shot pictures (mostly sports) at Colorado College (BA Poli Sci ‘68.) He began working as a freelancer for Time, and later Life magazine in the late 1960s, spending two years covering the war in Vietnam.

Following the demise of Life Magazine Weekly, he joined the French photo agency Gamma and subsequently, in 1975 he co-founded Contact Press Images, in New York. His work for news magazines in Europe and the US has included politics, sports and portraiture, as well as the news.

He has covered every Summer Olympic Games since 1984, as well as the 2002 and recent 2014 Sochi Winter Games, and photographed every American President since John F. Kennedy.

His awards include ‘Magazine Photographer of the Year’ from the Pictures of the Year Competition, the ‘World Press Photo of the Year’, and the Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club. He has produced photographic essays for Time, Fortune, GEO, Paris-Match and ESPN Magazine. He served on the World Press Jury in 1997, 1999, and chaired the jury in 2011.

He also taught the World Press “Joop Swart Master Class” in 2007. He is the author of two photographic books: “Soul Rebel - An Intimate Portrait of Bob Marley,” and “44 Days : Iran and the Remaking of the World,” pictures taken during the 1979 Iranian Revolution.

Judge For DAVID WARD, childhood holidays in the Lake District and Cornwall led to a love of landscape and a desire to try and express his sense of wonder through art. He became fascinated by photography in his late teens and was accepted for the prestigious Film & Photographic Arts course at PCL in London, where he was a student of Victor Burgin. David graduated with a BA Hons in 1983. He has now spent thirty years travelling the world with his large format camera.

His eye for colour and form is without equal and he produces work that is startling in both its clarity and intensity. As well as numerous articles, David has written two critically acclaimed books on his craft; “Landscape Within” (2004) and “Landscape Beyond” (2008). In these, through a series of essays, he explores the medium’s history and looks at deeper philosophical questions about art and photography. He is fascinated by the gap between vision and photography and seeks to explore this through his work.

“There is a mystery wrapped in every photograph. Each is unquestionable proof of an individual point in space and time; they are true. And yet they lie. They have the power of illusion, the power to transcend their subject. For me, photography isn’t about the subject, this is just raw material. What matters is how photography changes our perception of the world. Every photograph is a transformation and I’m intrigued by how making an image effects this change and how this affects the viewer.”

JACKIE RANKEN has over thirty years’ experience within the arts. Her interest began with photography at the tender age of 16. Her art practice then shifted to ceramics and painting, gaining an Associate Diploma in Fine Arts. Returning to photography throughout the next fifteen years, she worked within the industry as a darkroom technician, freelance photographer, wedding photographer, commercial photographer and photojournalist, learning her craft.

In 1996 she began work as a teacher of ‘Fine art’ photography at Illawarra TAFE, Goulburn.

Now as an art photographer she combines her art practice with teaching and as a presenter in workshops and seminars internationally. Jackie is a Director of the Queenstown Centre for Creative Photography in Queenstown, New Zealand where she conducts photography workshops with her husband Mike Langford (www.qccp.co.nz). She has a close association with Canon New Zealand and Canon Australia. “The Canon company has had a very positive influence in my career. I use a Canon EOS 5D Mk III and a wide range of lenses.”

Tony is a ‘Grand Master of Photography’ of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

He is also an Honorary Fellow of the AIPP and a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography.

Tony’s career highlights feature over 150 state, national and international photography awards.

In September 2013, Tony was awarded the prestigious title of Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year, and in the same year received the New Zealand Overseas Photographer of the Year, the Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year and the Western Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year.

Tony was also invited to be a Core Artist at the 2013 Ballarat International Foto Biennale. He was Western Australian Professional Photographer of the Year in 2004 and also in 1994.

Tony Hewitt’s photographic journey has seen him explore the genres of portrait, landscape, wedding and fine art photography. He has exhibited around the world and has judged photography competitions internationally.

With a passion for people, places and pictures, and an instinctive sense of the moment, Tony brings a unique combination of creative skills, award winning photographic vision and simple creativity.

In some more recent explorations, Tony has enjoyed capturing ‘abstract’ and ‘altered’ landscapes which seek to illustrate the hand of man and its impact on his surroundings. He has consistently worked on many collaborative photographic projects along with his individual artistic directions and has been invited to be a part of the Wizards of OZ collective in a representation of Australia Photographic Artists to be exhibited at the Pingyao International Photo Festival in China. Peter Eastway has been involved in landscape photography, photography competitions and judging for over 30 years. He was the Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photography Award Chairman for six years, is the Head Judge for the International Loupe Awards, and has judged internationally around the world.

Peter has won many awards for his photography. In 1996 and 1998 he was the AIPP Australian Professional Photographer of the Year. He was Australian Landscape Photographer of the Year in 1995, 1996 and 1998, Australian Illustrative Photographer of the Year in 2004, and NSW Professional Photographer of the Year in 1995, 1996, 2004 and 2010. He has also won the Grand Award for the Commercial Category at the 2005 and 2008 WPPI Exhibition in Las Vegas.

Peter’s passion is for landscapes, portraiture and the printed page. He is the publisher of Better Photography magazine and website. Peter’s work is so respected that Lonely Planet chose him to write their international photography guide book on landscape photography.

Peter is an AIPP Grand Master of Photography, one of only a dozen or so in the world and earned from a career spanning nearly 30 years.
