A little bit of history
Originally a Saxon settlement, Esher appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. Transport links have always been key to its prosperity, firstly as a stagecoach stop on the London–Portsmouth road in the 17th century and later with the advent of the railway in 1838, which opened the town up for commuters to the capital.
Esher has connections to the British music scene, with both George Harrison of the Beatles and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees calling the town home during their respective heydays in the 1960s and 70s.
Why move to Esher?
The town provides the perfect balance between country and city living, with a wealth of scenic countryside on the doorstep and the outstanding shopping, dining and entertainment of London only a short train journey away.
With a fabulous choice of property, Esher is ideal for those looking to buy or rent in the historic county of Surrey.
Thenumber of Londoners buying homes outside the capital doubled last year from what it was in 2013 - and Esher was the top place for families to move to. With an average price more than double that of the second placed town - Brentwood in Essex - Esher’s homes, averaging out at £860,000, attracted the most families who wanted to get out of London, as revealed in research by residential agents Hamptons International.
Johnny Morris, head of research at Hamptons International, said: “Esher certainly has geography on its side - it’s within the M25 and sits within the half-an-hour sweet spot of train commutes.
“It’s also an area well established in Londoners’ minds, with good schools and green space.
“So for Londoners looking to move out but keep ties with the capital, it offers a great midpoint between town and country.”
The news came with research that found Londoners bought 58,000 homes outside the capital in 2014, 50% more than in 2013 and the highest number since 2007.
Figures released in August showed that Esher was the fourth most valuable town in England in terms of house prices.

Expert Interview with Iris Kouneni from aThink Architects
Tell us a little about your background and how AThink came to be established?
I was always interested in residential design. The idea of improving the everyday life of a family through my designs is very intriguing. I have worked for many high end architectural practices in Surrey, and I reached a point were I felt that I could give so much more to my clients. We founded aThink Architects with my husband, who is also a registered architect, because we wanted to create bespoke designs around the clients’ family and not box standard solutions.
How early in the buying process would you advise a client to get in touch?
As early as possible. We work with a lot of our clients from the day their offer is accepted, as the concept design stage is very important and it can take weeks or even months to get to the final design. One can also reach out to us if they are not sure if the property they are interested in can accommodate all their needs. We will then do a desktop study on the property and advise on if we think it is the right property for their family.
14 www.hamptons.co.uk EXPERT INTERVIEW
email@example.com 01932 553158 https://athink.co.uk/contact/ Book a free Online Design Consultation!
What’s the process you take customers through from that first enquiry?
The first step is to arrange a Home Design Consultation, which you can book in our website, where we do a desktop study of the property beforehand and come to the meeting prepared to discuss local planning regulations, planning history and design options. Once we are instructed, we do a site meeting to learn a bit more about the clients and refine the brief. We will develop different concept ideas and present them using 2D drawings, precedent images and 3D sketches. We also use Virtual Reality videos, so the clients can see their renovated and extended or new house before they decide on the final design.
Finally, we will submit the planning application and liaise with the planners until the decision. We then prepare the Building Regulation drawings, help with the tender and do contract administration. We prefer to take each project from start to finish.
What is the future of architecture?
Our team is very passionate about green home architecture. Sustainable design underpins all of our new build and home improvement projects. Designing green homes is not just about reducing carbon emissions and installing clever technologies. Sustainable buildings provide a high level of occupant comfort while using very little energy for heating and cooling. They are built with meticulous attention to detail and rigorous design and construction. It all starts at the very early stages of designing and involves fundamental architectural principles such as orientation, ventilation and deep knowledge of sustainable materials. It is the future of Architecture.
What aspect of your work gives you the greatest satisfaction?
I like the idea of improving people’s life, but if I could narrow it down into one moment it is the moment I see the clients faces when they see the final design. When I can see in their eyes and smiles that I have encapsulated in my design what they were dreaming of and hopefully a bit more.

Interview with Ivo from Alpha Floor Sanding.
Please tell us a little about how you started your flooring company. My father started our family business in Bulgaria back in 1985. He began teaching me how to restore floors when I was 14 years old. Every day after school, I was helping him with the projects. In 2013 I decided to come to the UK on holiday. I liked the people, the energy that London has and chose to live here for a while before I knew that most of the houses here have wood floors in them. Everything matched, and I started my own flooring business 8 years ago.
What is the thing you enjoy most about working with wooden floors. That is easy- the transformation of an old wood floor. To restore something installed by someone 100-200 or even 300 years ago and to make it look like new again, I can say that I have done thousands of floors in my life, and I am still excited when I am applying that first coat of oil on a freshly sanded floor.
Which kind of wood do you recommend both for beauty and practical usage?
There are advantages and disadvantages to each species of wood. It depends on the use of the floor, where the clients will use it and how they will maintain it. You can buy the best and most expensive fork in the world, but it won’t be any good to eat soup with it.
Is there a project you worked on that you’re most proud of?
We have done many floors during the years, some of them for celebrities, but to be honest, I am proud of each job we have done. The smile on the client’s face is what makes us proud.
What advice would you give to a client who is unsure to choose carpet or wood for their living space?
In my opinion, the carpet is clean only on the day of installation. After that, no matter how much you clean it, it will never be as clean as mopped hard floor.
Interview with ‘Alexander James Interiors’
What services do Alexander James Interiors provide?
Alexander James is one of the leading Interior Design houses in the UK, recognised in the World’s Top 100. We serve private clients, property developers, and commercial partners who value a different approach for carefully considered creative design that is seamlessly seen through to an exacting standard. For all private residential projects, whether they are classical superprime properties or modern apartments, we will provide a dedicated designer who delivers a level of service and attention to detail that is second to none from the start to the finish of the project.
What types of projects do Alexander James Interiors work on?
From complete turnkey projects to one or two rooms, AJI is happy to offer Hamptons buyers a free face-to-face consultation before or after completion to explore our bespoke services in more depth. Unlike many of our competitors, we do not charge a design fee. Designed with not just aesthetics in mind but equally practicality and longevity, our experienced team of over 30 Interior Architecture and Interior Designers based in our Head Office in Twyford has all the expertise and facilities to help you create your dream home.
What are the benefits of using an interior designer?
Having worked on thousands of houses, we are able to guide our clients through the process seamlessly, exploring quality, budget, and practical living solutions for their new home. Whether it is a new build shell that needs some homely touches, a complete modernising renovation job, a
dress to sell for all our vendors out there –(a sure-fire wire to set yourself apart from the rest of the market) or indeed a build from scratch. AJI has a tailored team to help ensure that your project is completed to the highest of levels.
In developing a style for a client’s property who takes the lead or is it a collaborative effort?
As expected, every project and client we get the honour of working with is different and their motivation to engage with AJI varying. Some clients are time poor, or live overseas, others need help with commercial decisions or are investors. Others love interiors but just struggle to make a decision. We take a comprehensive brief at the start of each project and work collaboratively with our clients to work out their design narrative. We welcome them to our showroom, take them to suppliers’ factories as well as of course do many on site visits to ensure our clients feel fully informed of their choice options at all times.
What has been some of most successful projects to date?
Working across not only the UK but globally has allowed AJI to be a part of many award winning private and commercial properties. It would be impossible to pick just one. However, we are currently working on some amazing turn keys properties in the local area for private clients that understand quality and luxury but equally want to create a timeless, practical welcoming home. Combining all talents within the design studio always results in some of our favourite and critically acclaimed projects.

Thames Ditton Miniature Railway
We have been in existence for 80 years and at our current site since 1948. Our railway is well known and locally it is referred to as the Thames Ditton Miniature Railway, and this is where we operate our two independent railways. The railway is operated entirely by unpaid volunteers, and we hold regular public open days at the railway. Admission to the site is free, single, day and family tickets may be purchased for those who wish to ride the trains. Most of the model locomotives seen at the railway are privately owned, being built and operated by its members, however the society does own a number of locomotives banqueted over the years. The society also owns most of its passengerrolling stock needed to operate its two railways. We pride ourselves on our facilities that we have built up over the years, and the service and facilities that we provide for our visitors and members alike.

Interview with the Weybridge & Esher Landscaping team
Tell us a little about how you gained your landscaping expertise?
Since I was a teenager helping my father building fences, trimming olives trees, mandarins, lemons, hedges, small brick walls, patios and since then I never stopped. I’ve worked with few different landscaping companies in Surrey initially then picked up the best things from each of them before starting on my own. With right attitude and hard work I continue to make people happy.
What aspect of your work gives you the most satisfaction?
The reaction of my client when the project is finish I something thatyou cannot forget. It makes al the hard labour worthwhile.
Is there a project you are most proud of?
All of them I must say as they all are different and challenging, I’m always looking forward to see what will come next.
What advice would you give to a homeowner who wants to maximise their outdoor space?
With my experience I have noticed that people plant more than they should do or put more things in the garden. I would advise keep it as simple as possible and things that you do not use anymore, be disciplined and take it away.
When a Hamptons client invites you to their space what’s the usual process?
It’s very simple, first I hear what they would like to do in their garden, I suggest few ideas what I think might look better, together we agree a plan of action and a price package and take it from there.

Giggling Squid – Esher
Living in the area made me think that Giggling Squid would fit in really well. We also wanted a good local Thai restaurant that we could eat in! Before this building became a Giggling Squid, I used to take my son for tea here after his swimming class. How times change! From day one, we’ve had such immense support from the locals and parents from schools around the area. It’s also probably one of my favourite restaurants –there’s a sky light at the back which makes the lamps sparkle as the sun goes down.

Planning and Building Control
Unsure which services you need?
If you are thinking of making changes to your property, you may need to apply for planning permission and / or Building Regulations approval. If you’re not sure which applications to make, please use the guidance below to help you to decide what you need to do.
Please note that many developments will require both.
What is planning?
Planning is the process of deciding whether a proposed development should go ahead or not. It uses national and local policies to consider the development in its context and may look at the impact of the work on neighbours and the wider community, existing architecture, the land, the layout, and existing or proposed infrastructure (such as drains, transport and schools).
You will probably need planning permission if your proposed development will do any of the following:
• create a new building, or change the use or appearance of an existing building
• affect the sunlight, privacy or outlook for neighbouring properties
• affect the nearby area with noise disturbance, smell or fumes
• work on or around listed buildings or any conservation areas
• affect traffic volumes, road safety or access
• change the density of development in an area
• use significantly different materials or finishes from nearby properties
• have an effect on existing trees
What is building control?
Building control applies national statutory regulations to ensure the structural quality of any building work, in areas such as safety, public health, accessibility, and the materials used. Most substantial building projects (such as an extension, knocking down walls or converting a garage or loft) will need Building Regulations approval.
