AND ECUMENISM

We need to promote new models of wider and evangelical Asian ecumenism in which polarizations of the past are overcome and so-called ‘Evangelicals’ and so-called ‘Ecumenicals’ cannot be projected and understood any more as exclusive opposites because this simply does not match with emerging realities in the 21st century. The new kind of broader and evangelical ecumenism in Asia this Handbook is giving witness for takes the best from historical ecumenism and from evangelical renewal and charismatic churches. Dietrich Werner, Director of Ecumenical Theological Education (ETE) Programme, WCC

AND ECUMENISM

The Asian Handbook for Theological Education and Ecumenism signals an investment towards the future of the ecumenical movement in Asia. Being a region with limited available resources and extreme diversity, education and training is widely thought to be a significant way of opening a new future of common witness and sharing in various areas. The release of this tremendously rich resource book, right in time of the occasion of the 10th assembly of the World Council of Churches, will open new dimensions of exploring new ways of community life, common witness, mutual enrichment and guidance of Asian churches through the new era of ecumenism. Kim Young-Ju, National Council of Churches in Korea, General Secretary

Asian Handbook for

The publication of this Asian Handbook for Theological Education and Ecumenism is a landmark in ecumenical life in Asia. It is a collection of articles that reflects the ongoing ‘double wrestle’, with the texts of biblical tradition as well as with contemporary contexts, as the churches in Asia reflect theologically on what it means to be the churches in Asia in each particular period of time, especially in expressing their unity in Christ and in witnessing together the love of Christ amidst the realities and challenges posed by the changing and pluralistic context of Asian communities. There is no doubt that this handbook will contribute significantly to the ongoing theological reflections and discussions in the area of theological education, both in formal and informal modes. Ery Hutarabat Lebang, Conference of Churches in Asia, General Secretary

THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION

This impressive and comprehensive new Asian Handbook for Theological Education and Ecumenism, focussing on key resources for teaching on Christian unity and common witness in Asian contexts, is a timely and unique contribution for the 10th assembly of the World Council of Churches in Busan, South Korea. The theme for the assembly, “God of Life, lead us to peace with justice” sets the tone and theological horizon for a new formulation of Asian ecumenism which as the heart of this volume: It is the promise of the God of life for all which is the inspiring motive and horizon for Asian ecumenism, a continent which throughout history has seen a lot of denial of life while at the same time being home to most of the world’s living religions. We do hope that this book will be a standard reference volume to be consulted in any major Asian theological library, both in universities as well as in church–related seminaries. Olav Fykse Tveit, World Council of Churches, General Secretary
