This edition is a milestone. The magazine started off in 2014 with 4000 copies. Over the years it has slowly increased to its present circulation of 14,000. If you are reading this, then you were the chosen ones.

As from the Nov/Dec edition, we are to increase circulation to 36,000, covering nearly all of Taunton and the outlying villages too, direct into your letterboxes.

The title of the magazine is reverting back to its original name of ‘Word Gets Around – Taunton’ instead of its present name of Taunton Local.

Travel: Longleat

A cheetah travels from naught to sixty in three seconds and has a top speed of 70mph. This sounds like one of my motoring reviews but it’s a fascinating fact learnt while on the drive through safari at Longleat.

We check in at 2pm and relax in front of the television for a few hours before going for a stroll. Then it’s dinner.

We’re lucky that the weather is delightful. So we eat outside.

As we travel around this 8,000 acres Wiltshire estate we see other big cats including lions and tigers. Driving our own vehicle, we listen to a CD that tells us all about each animal. It takes about two hours to complete the safari and aside from the heat it can’t be all that different to doing it in Africa.

After the safari we park up and it’s time for our packed lunch after which we make our way round the rest of the park. The rain has, by now, set in for the afternoon but there are plenty of undercover attractions. One of the highlights of the afternoon for me is the parrot show (video on website). “They have the intellect of a three or four-year-old child,” says their keeper, adding that they also behave like a child of that age. We duly see how temperamental they can be but to her credit the keeper persists, and the various tasks are completed. A very entertaining show.

Then there are the penguins that mesmerise little Henry (2). I haven’t known him stand still for so long, as he watches them being fed. To our surprise Heidi (5) agrees to have a cockroach on her hand in the handling area, the rest of us are not so brave. In the butterfly farm we see many large exotic butterflies. We all enjoy the train ride, too. On our way out, we see two tiny monkeys being fed.

We stay in Raja, a family room, at The Bath Arms on the Longleat estate. It is well located to the side of the pub and restaurant so that our children don’t disturb anybody. The furniture and fittings pay homage to India, creating a very relaxing environment. There’s a massive four poster bed and plenty of room for the children’s beds. There’s a good-sized bathroom.

For starters I have Wiltshire wood pigeon followed

by Wiltshire coffee crusted lamb while Caroline has an asparagus and poached egg starter followed by a homemade beef burger. Fish and chips for Heidi, beef burger for Harriett and sausage and mash for Henry.

This is a fantastic experience because the presentation of the food is stunning, and the quality of the cooking is second to none. We really weren’t expecting such a very high standard. I try a local ale, too. For pudding we have a selection of strawberry and yoghurt ice cream with Belgian dark chocolate and peanut butter fondant and a panna cotta. Eating outside allows the children to get up after each course for a run around the garden.

Time for bed and we all have a blissful night’s sleep. In the morning Henry wakes up first. We make our way to the dining room for breakfast. Again, a fantastic experience. There’s a selection of cereals, pastries, yoghurts and fruit salad and if that’s not enough there’s a variety of cooked options including smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. I cannot resist a full English while the girls and Henry opt for pancakes with berries and crème fraiche. For the first time in my life I even eat the black pudding, a testament to the beautifully crafted dish before my eyes.

The Staplegrove Inn. With Nick Chipchase

I thought I would talk about public houses again as we are seeing so many closures locally. On average eighteen pubs a week closed in 2017 with breweries blaming higher beer duty , business rates and VAT. Really its not that simple as there has been a huge change in social conditions from the heyday of the public house in the early 1900,s. The public house then served as a respite from poor conditions in the home where there was overcrowding poor heating and light. Add to that the concern about drink and drive so village pubs are bearing the brunt of many closures. Without a good restaurant business times can be very hard.

“The Staplegrove Inn” is looking very forlorn now. It struggled on with poor parking amenities and few customers for a long while. I went there a while ago.

There was only one other customer. In the image you see a vibrant and attractive local amenity long before there were radical changes to the exterior. The sign declares the licensee to be Peter Whitecross and the inn offers good stabling for weary travellers. Mr Whitecross was here in 1902.

In 1902 Staplegrove was a parish adjoining the Borough of Taunton. The Borough was extended prior to 1902 reducing the actual population of Staplegrove from 1,100 to a mere 300.The old parish extended to Frieze Hill and included Taunton School.The post office was almost adjoining the church and appeared to be a rather run down thatched cottage.Like Bishops Hull the old village is gradually being absorbed into the environs of Taunton Garden Town with vast estates planned in the area.

But let us return to the pubs.Taunton had about 90 public houses in 1902 serving a population of 21,000. Today’s pub figures are far less with the big “ gastro pubs “ taking a big share of the market. Initially they had their critics being blamed for destroying the traditional pub with its cold fare and ploughman’s lunch. Market forces decide such things as we see internet shopping gradually eroding the high street business’s. So its interesting to look around and see where the public houses used to be.”The Rumwell Inn” now empty and forlorn.”The White Lion” at Blagdon struggled on but eventually gave up.

“The Crown”. Both now flats at Wellington New Road and Staplehay. The old “Somerset Inn” close to the police station with the draymans access still in the pavement.

Oh what lovely brick cellars down there. In Wellington the “King’s Arms” still has Christmas decorations in the window. A sad reminder of happier days and what hope now with a huge “ gastro pub “ across the road.

Some pubs have bucked the trend and seem to have made an acceptable transition to modernity. “The Green Dragon” at Wellington and the “Maypole” at Thurloxton.

Many have given up their old village names like “The Galmington Inn” now “Shepherd’s Rest”. “Bathpool Inn” now the” New Mill” though I am not sure why. Here is an oddity I came across recently “The Old New Inn at Priddy” an oxymoron designed to accommodate a website address. Yes times are indeed changing and public houses will have to embrace that change somehow or die.

Miss Windsor’s Blackberry & Elderberry Breakfast Muffins!

Method

• • • • Hello, darlings!

Miss Windsor’s Blackberry & Elderberry Breakfast Muffins – are simple, subtlety sweet, yet a rather healthful bundle of fruitiness – hence created with very little sugar; and naturally sweetened by British foraged fruits!

Preparation time: 30 mins Cooking time: 20 to 23 mins Serves 14 delightful guests!

Ingredients

1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter (room temperature) 1/3 cup (70 g) caster sugar (double the amount, if you have a sweet tooth!)

1 egg – well beaten 2 & 2/3 cups (340g) all-purpose flour / plain flour

4 heaped teaspoons of baking powder 1 & 1/2 cups (approx.375ml) whole milk 2 cups (approx.280g) - mixed blackberries and elderberries (please note: you can use any berries you like!)

1 teaspoon of vanilla essence for decoration: extra berries, and a sprinkling of porridge oats

1 large muffin tray

Darlings, before you proceed, wash those greasy little ‘mitts’ of yours – Ta very muchly!

Pre-heat your oven to: 200*C / 180*C Fan / 400 *F / gas mark 6.

Prepare your muffin tray! So, place good-looking muffin cases into each slot – How spiffing!

In a large mixing bowl, with a wooden spoon beat the room temperature butter until light and creamy.

Now, gradually add the sugar, then the beaten egg and vanilla essence – mix well!

Using a separate mixing bowl, sift the flour about 2 or 3 times – this will help to make the muffins nice and light.

Add the baking powder and mix together until thoroughly distributed. Reserve 1/4 cup (approx.40g) of flour to coat the blackberries and elderberries with.

Darlings, using yet another mixing bowl, coat your blackberries and elderberries with the reserved flour – this will prevent the berries from bleeding during cooking. Set the berries to one side.

To the butter/sugar/egg mixture – add 2 heaped dessertspoons of flour, followed by 2 or 3 glugs of whole milk. Repeat until the flour and milk are finished, then mix well with a wooden spoon.

Carefully add the flour coated blackberries and elderberries, then with your delicate hand and dessertspoon please mix with caution to avoid any damage to the berries – Much obliged!

Now, dollop the mixture evenly between the muffin cases. Top with blackberries, elderberries and a sprinkling of porridge oats.

Place on the middle shelf of oven. Bake for 5 minutes, then turn down the temperature to 180*C / 160*C Fan / 360 *F / gas mark 4.

Bake for a further 15 minutes or so, until muffins have risen and are slightly sun-kissed – How pleasant!

Darlings, enjoy with a generous slather of slightly salted West-Country butter, or any jam of choice!

Car review Toyota C-HR

Whilst the C-HR is very well designed for a comfortable ride, the hybrid models are heavier, meaning you’ll get a more relaxed ride in the non-hybrid models. Nevertheless, Toyota has done a good job.

The extra weight of the hybrid also means it doesn’t handle quite as well as the purely-petrol-powered models, but this won’t be noticeable most of the time, unless you’re really looking to throw it round corners. If you are, the chances are you’ll be looking at a performance model and you won’t be after a hybrid.

The Toyota C-HR is a car you quite easily may not even have heard of. It’s very much in the shadows of its rivals, like the Nissan Qashqai.

You can pick up a new C-HR for £21,595, which is more than £2,300 than the entry-level Qashqai, but the model we have on test here is the hybrid version with Dynamic trim – the top of the range. It costs £28,615 – so it had better be worth it.

Whilst the car is a similar shape and size to the Qashqai, its roof slopes towards the rear far more so than the Nissan (think BMW X4/X6) and that means there’s less room inside.

But it’s got very aggressive styling and even the entrylevel models have a lot of kit with it. The Dynamic comes with rear camera, touchscreen, DAB radio, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, sat-nav, smart entry and push-button start, park assist – and that really is skimming the surface.

The C-HR shares a lot of its DNA with the Toyota Prius, so it’s only to be expected that the C-HR is available as a hybrid version which cuts fuel consumption to 72.4 miles per gallon. Its electric motor blends with a 1.8 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 122 PS and gets from a 0-62 mph in 11 seconds.

It also comes with a one-speed gearbox and, if that’s raised your eyebrows, don’t worry – it’s CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and its use is on the increase. That said, the lack of a traditional engine rev will take some getting used to, unless you’re used to driving electrics or hybrids.

In the C-HR, it does feel a little sluggish, even though its performance is comparable with the Qashqai and other rivals.

The interior improves Toyota’s reputation of dullness and it’s a nice place to be, though you won’t struggle to find better interiors elsewhere. There’s plenty of room in the front, but the sloping roof means you won’t want to be in the back if you’re tall. Boot space is also disappointing in comparison with its rivals, with the folding seats not as convenient.

To sum up, the hybrid is great for fuel saving but adds plenty of drawbacks. And, coupled with the Dynamic trim, it makes it rather too expensive. The sheer amount of equipment means one of the lesser models should suffice for most.

And, unless your focus is fuel economy, so too should the petrol engine – without the hybrid.

Mayor of Taunton Deane 2018/19 Cllr Catherine Herbert

Mr Miles in the High Street over a cup of tea and delicious cakes with the proceeds from events going to the Mayor’s charities: St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, SURE and the Taunton Sea and Royal Marines Cadets.

Further afield, the Mayor visited HMS Somerset and the Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre and also welcomed international visitors to the Borough including students and teachers from Zambia who have a long established link with Kingsmead School in Wiveliscombe.

IT’S been a non-stop summer for Taunton Deane Mayor Catherine Herbert whose diary has never been more crammed with events, activities and people to meet.

From Taunton Flower Show to visiting HMS Somerset, the variety of the Mayor’s commitments is enough to make the head spin.

The summer got off to a fantastic start with the 40 Commando Royal Marines Freedom Parade through Taunton. Thousands of people turned out in glorious sunshine – it was a day that Taunton can look back on with real pride.

It was great to greet two students – Meghan and Alexa - from Taunton’s namesake city in Massachusetts. They took home a lot of great memories and let’s hope the link between the UK and US communities continues to flourish.

Earlier in the summer the Mayor celebrated Armed Forces Day and on 9 September will be celebrating national Emergency Services Day with a flag-raising outside County Hall in Taunton with the chair of Somerset County Council Cllr Nigel Taylor. Why is planning for Christmas so difficult?

Depending on your natural flow and how your brain is hardwired it is likely that you find one kind of thinking easier than others, planning requires your brain to perform a mental workout. Add into that the complexity of negotiating with other family members who think and work differently to you and it can be a minefield.

Celebrity Interview Sarah Lancashire

Sarah married TV producer and executive Peter Salmon with whom she has a son Joseph, born in 2003.

She got her big break when she landed the role of Linda in the West End production of Blood Brothers at the Albery Theatre in 1990. In 1991, two weeks after her run in Blood Brothers came to an end, she landed the part of Raquel Wolstenholme, a colleague of Norman ‘Curly’ Watts, played

by Kevin Kennedy, in Coronation Street.

She proved to be an instant hit with fans of the soap, even more so when Raquel and Curly married, and starred in the spin-off Coronation Street episode, the Cruise, which focused on their honeymoon. When Sarah left the soap in 1996 and her final scenes attracted 20 million viewers.

Award winning actress Sarah Lancashire won the hearts of many as the dim but lovable barmaid Raquel in Coronation Street – she’s been our screen for over 30 years. Sarah went on to secure roles in Where the Heart Is, Clocking Off and Seeing Red. In the summer of 2000, she signed a two-year £1.3m contract with ITV making her the UK’s highest paid television actress at the time.

Her first role under the new contract was in six-part drama The Glass opposite John Thaw before starring in the twopart psychological drama The Cry. She has narrated the BBC One series Lark Rise To Candleford, played the mother of a murder victim in the BBC drama Five Daughters and the Head of Ladies-wear Miss Audrey in The Paradise.

She is also one of the lead cast members in BBC drama, Last Tango in Halifax and has won critical acclaim for her role as police sergeant Catherine Cawood inHappy Valley. Educated at Oldham Hulme Grammar School, Sarah started battling depression at the age of 17.

She was offered a place at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and graduated in 1986. Her first job was with the Manchester Library Theatre Company. Because she had big gaps between work, Sarah worked as a drama teacher at Salford University to support herself. When she was 22, she married music lecturer Gary Hargreaves, her first serious boyfriend; they had been dating for four years. They had a son called Thomas in 1987 before another arrived in 1989.

They separated in 1995 before divorcing. Then in 2001, 14.

After Corrie, Sarah went on to star as district nurse Ruth Goddard in ITV drama Where the Heart Is before making a guest appearance on the dark comedy series Murder Most Horrid. After she left Where the Heart Is in 1999, she returned to Corrie for one episode which just starred her and Kevin Kennedy, in which Raquel asks Curly for a divorce. In 2017 she was awarded an OBE for services to drama. She received the accolade from the Duke of Cambridge at Buckingham Palace. “I wish my father had been alive,” said Sarah. “I think at times like this, really, one tends to focus on parents and my father would have been the proudest man in the world. It’s very difficult because you are in these most spectacular surroundings and you are trying desperately to take it all in. It’s wonderful.”

Born in Oldham, Greater Manchester in 1964 Sarah has three brothers; one her twin, one older, one younger. Her father Geoffrey was a television scriptwriter for Coronation Street and The Cuckoo Waltz and her mother Hilda was his personal assistant.

Sarah graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1986 and began her career in local theatre while teaching drama classes at the University of Salford.

£250,000 pledge secures Arts Taunton plans for a youth festival ArtsTaunton, the charity working to transform Somerset’s County Town into a major regional centre for the arts, has secured a pledge of £250,000 to facilitate its plans to mount an annual festival by young people for young people.

The commitment by the Brownsword Charitable Foundation, led by philanthropist and entrepreneur Andrew Brownsword CBE DL, has established a strong financial base for the festival which will enable it to plan, develop and grow over the next six years and beyond.

“We want our gift to be a springboard to inspire and encourage others to back this wonderful enterprise and to grow it as far as possible,” said Mr Brownsword. “This annual festival will be a fantastic platform on which to educate and develop young people from all backgrounds in all forms of artistic endeavour over the years to come.”

Martyn Owen, Vice-Chairman of ArtsTaunton and the Director responsible for facilitating the Festival, said: “This will become the must-see young people’s Arts Festival in South West England, showcasing the best of our young creative talent between the ages of five and twenty-five.

Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) give authority for someone (your attorney) to manage your affairs and make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so yourself. This could be due to illness, absence or incapacity. There are two types of LPA. One is for financial affairs and the other is for health and welfare decisions.

It is tempting to put off making an LPA until the last minute, when you begin to struggle to manage on your own. However, an LPA can only be made and registered whilst you have capacity.

Once registered, a financial affairs LPA can be used straight away (with your consent), even when you still have capacity. A health and welfare LPA can only be used when you have lost capacity and enables your attorney to discuss your treatment needs and decisions with your healthcare providers.

For financial affairs, it can be a useful tool if you spend extended periods overseas or if you suffer from a physical illness or disability which makes getting out and about difficult. Your chosen attorney can help with your financial affairs whilst you are unable to do so.

When you lose capacity (suddenly or otherwise) and you do not have an LPA, no one will be able to access or manage your finances for you, even temporarily. This means that funds may be unavailable either to you or your loved ones at the very time they are needed the most.

If a loved one has lost capacity and does not have an LPA, it is possible to get authority to manage their affairs by applying to the Court of Protection to appoint a deputy. This is an expensive and complicated application requiring medical evidence and taking up to 6 months or longer.

Boost your Broadband

Good news for long-suffering broadband users! New rules are now in place that means broadband providers will be forced to advertise the speeds that at least half their customers actually receive. Before they could get away with promoting the speed that only the top 10% received.

Broadband is one of the most complained-about services I hear about at Resolver. We’ve had over 30,000 complaints over the last few years. By far the biggest issue is broadband speed not delivering, not working at all or regularly packing in. This is the source of much frustration for you all, given it means waiting in for an engineer for most of the day, not to mention some infuriating call-centre ‘experiences’.

I’m speaking to all the big broadband providers to tell them what they need to do to win round their frustrated customers. I’m also tackling exit fees… but more on that in another column!

But here are a few tips to help you out if your slow service is leaving you disconnected. · CHECK YOUR SPEED There’s loads of free apps that you can download that will allow you to check the actual speed of your broadband connection. Our friends at MoneySavingExpert have a great guide on their website covering your options. The key thing to do is take a screenshot each time you check on your phone so you’ve got some evidence to back up your complaint.

ASK FOR OPTIONS Speak to your broadband provider (send them a tweet or get in touch online if you want to dodge the call centre), you could ask for something to boost the speed, get a reduction in your payments – or they may even have a fix.

Give your signal a boost. There are lots of things you can do to improve your broadband signal, from making sure your router is near the phone line, using cables not WiFi, upgrading your router and reducing the number of electrical items that might be giving off signals nearby. Even the humble old fish tank can cause problems if it’s got filters and other electrical items plugged in to it.

GETTING TECHY You can get booster boxes and cables from most electronic stores to help you with your signal problem. Your broadband provider will also provide these but ask any engineer who pops round and they’ll tell you to buy them from a different store or online as they’ll be much cheaper. Most of these boosters are designed to improve your WiFi signal around the house, but some also help improve your broadband speed. Check before you buy to make sure the goods do what you need them to.

TAKE IT HIGHER. Still not happy? Resolver can help you make a complaint, but it pays to set out your argument in simple terms. If you want out of the contract, provide proof of the poor service and the efforts you’ve made to sort it out. This is where those screenshots you’ve taken come in helpful. When making a broadband complaint, it pays to have evidence of the problems you’ve faced, dates when you contacted the business and when engineers came around. Though you must give the broadband provider a fair shot at sorting out the problem, if they don’t take the opportunity to do so, you can take it further.

Broadband speed isn’t definitively guaranteed, but you can argue that you’re not getting the service you paid for it it’s constantly disrupted. So, if you feel you’ve been misled in to taking out a contract or the business simply can’t provide what they promised, don’t get mad – let them know.

George Taunton’s Top Cat - the word on the street.

There a few places I love to lie down in the house, the settee, my carers keyboard, top of the cupboard in the kitchen. The best place of all is in front of the mantelpiece on a deep pile white rug. There isn’t a fire there so it’s not particularly that warm, but I hear plans are afoot to get one of those log burners. I can’t wait!

Bobby the black cat down the road said it’s best thing in the house.

“Has that cat come back in”? He’s just come back in he’s down by the settee” shout the rest of the family. Yep! You guessed it, out the door again.

I stayed out all night to be on the safe side and returned in the morning for breakfast. Outside the front of the house there’s a van with a big picture of a dog. Hang on, they not buying a dog…. please! I shoot through the cat flap and I’m immediately whisked up again out through the front door and into the van. Inside I could have died, I was sprayed with water, lightly shampooed and worst of all covered in some stinky perfume. I can’t go around smelling like this, I have a reputation to uphold.

I was dried and carried back in to house so at least I could get some food. On the other hand the good news was the company has turned up to fit the new log burner. The workmen are ripping out the fire place when he shouts to my carer.

I had my tea and decided to relax on the white rug.

Without any warning my carer leaps up and starts thrashing his newspaper around in the air. “Urgh! What is that smell?” The family look at each other and all claiming it was nothing to do with them. “It’s Ginge, put him outside”. Then before I knew it I was whisked up and slung out the back door. Why did I get the blame?

It wasn’t me! Maybe, it was carer and using me as an excuse, crafty sod.

I decided to make myself scarce for a while and go and patrol the area, making sure the neighbourhood was all calm. Maybe it was me! I thought it may be an idea to give myself a good lick all over. The more I licked the more I was convinced it was my carer.

A couple of hours past and I made my way back home. I crept in beside the settee out of direct sight. “I can still smell that smell”’ shouts my carer.

That night I really milked my sad face. Those extra biscuits tasted more delicious than normal.

Expensive coverings such as leather and silk were replaced by modern materials such as rexine, which had a dramatic effect on the price.

Have you ever wondered how we ended up with the three-piece suite? The story is a 20th Century one. The key to its success is wrapped up in functionality and cost. As the middle and working classes moved out of slums and into their own homes, they needed furniture.

The new homes were compact, with small rooms, totally unsuited to the heavy mahogany pieces of the large ‘society’ houses, and this type of furniture would have been beyond the financial reach of most ordinary people anyway.

The three-piece suite was a staple of most suburban childhoods. Many of us can remember traipsing round furniture showrooms with our parents while they looked for the perfect set. These nearly always comprised a three-seater sofa with two matching armchairs, all upholstered in beige velour or fake leather.

The story of the three-piece suite

The three-piece suite’s popularity grew through the storylines of the 1930s Hollywood film sets. Drawing room dramas and comedies created opportunities for film makers to create lavish ‘home’ sets. Housewives of the day who went to watch the movies saw famous actresses drape themselves over silk covered sofas or chairs, created in the contemporary Art Deco style.

They yearned to recreate this in their own lives and so provided a ready mass market for similar furniture.

Style gurus of the period, such as Stijl in Holland, Gropius and the Bauhaus group in Germany created designs that were cutting edge yet still suited to the functionality of the new era. Although these designer pieces were still only affordable by the wealthy elite, manufacturers began to adapt designs for a mass market.

It was Habitat and IKEA that changed the concept of the three-piece suite, with their modular systems that could be made to fit any space, in a variety of fabrics.

Pieces no longer had to match, so you could express your personality through your sofa choice.

The modular sofa wasn’t actually invented by Habitat or Ikea. It was invented by an American designer named Harvey Probber in 1944 though it didn’t go mainstream until the 1970s. G Plan, which designed early UK versions, led the way with their 1971 Duo range. According to a 1979 article in the US magazine Interior Design, Probber’s invention was “...one of the most influential developments in contemporary furniture design”.

These days we nearly all have some variation on the original three-piece suite in our homes, and its difficult to see what might ever replace it. I think I’ll go and sit on mine with a good book.

We may have said our fond farewells to the swallows and their fellow summer visitors, but now it’s time to welcome many thousands of feathered visitors from the north. Britain has some of the best places in Europe for birds to stop off on their long journeys: our coasts and estuaries really are nature’s service stations. Our marshes, mudflats, lakes and reservoirs are also the perfect spots for many birds to spend the winter, positively tropical compared to where they’ve travelled from. For the birds, these special places are vital for their winter survival. For us, that means autumn is a brilliant time to get outdoors and meet a new cast of characters.

Arriving in their thousands from Iceland and Greenland are the pink-footed geese. They’re here to feed on grain, potatoes and grass in fields, and to catch them at their best head to one of the sites where they spend the night and watch them make their dawn flight: spectacular.

Another staggering seasonal bird sight is that of the flocks of knot, wading birds that feed on mudflats, chased by the tide. When they’re on the move they fly back and forth in their tight flocks, thousands of birds strong, shimmering in the winter sun. You’ll notice that numbers of ducks on your local lakes increase at this time of year too, including pochard, tufted duck and teal from the north joining their UK neighbours. There are

even ducks on the sea: eiders, scoters and long-tailed ducks from northern Europe making the most of our warmer waters.

The journeys these birds will have made are astounding.

The dark-bellied brent goose, for example, flies an incredible 4,700km (2,900m) from Siberia to the eastern side of the UK. Over its lifetime this bird will clock up the equivalent air miles of flying two and a half times round the planet!

Sometimes winter visitors will even turn up on your doorstep! When the Beast from the East struck the UK with freezing weather conditions in February 2018, many people contacted the RSPB to ask about strange birds turning up in their gardens. Fieldfares, large thrushes from Scandinavia, are regular winter visitors, and normally they’d be seen feasting on berries in hedgerows.

Towards the end of winter, they move to the ground to search for worms. But the late snowfall and chilly weather came at a time when berries were scarce, and the ground was frozen, so the hungry birds flocked to gardens where there was more food around. Their smaller cousins, redwings, also took advantage of generous bird feeding, and both types of birds could be seen on the nation’s lawns, gobbling apples and other scraps left out for them.

Running & fitness coach How to add spice to your runs

Sometimes we can get out of our usual routine during the summer months as life gets in the way of running.

You may be feeling like you’ve lost your running mojo as your workouts have plateaued; you’ve got a bit bored with the same run and have looked for excuses to not go out. Autumn is the perfect time to add some new life into your runs and by understanding why each run is important it can help you focus, add some spice into your weekly running routine and help you find your mojo again.

Long Run If you are training for a specific goal you should be building up your base miles by adding in a long run into your weekly routine. These runs should be long enough that they leave you feeling a little fatigued but not too long that they leave you doubting your ability and losing confidence. I’ve found that there is nothing better than a Sunday morning easy run to make you feel good. Try and stick to the 10% a week increase rule and every 4th week, drop the mileage back down so you give yourself chance to recover and adapt.

Fartlek A fartlek workout is a base run that mixes in bursts of speed and it’s a fantastic way to add a bit of spice into your run if you have not run at speed before or if the feeling of speed scares you. During your run, choose a land mark, lampposts work well, and run at speed in-between each lamppost, slow the pace down between the next 2, then you can walk between the next 2. Repeat the routine, run at speed, then slower, then walk. Mix it up a bit, there are no hard and fast rules with this run, fartlek is Swedish for “speed play” so just play around with different speeds over different distances.

Tempo Run A tempo run is a brilliant way to increase your ability to run faster for longer as these types of runs help build up your “threshold” of being able to run at a faster pace over a longer distance. Start your run (could be 3 miles) with a mile warm up at an easy pace. Your middle segment is then run just at a pace that you would find it hard to have a conversation but not too hard that you cannot talk.

Your last mile should be a warm down mile, run at the same speed as your first mile. As you become stronger you can increase the distances of these types of runs but again obey the 10% rule.

Hills Hill training is an excellent way to focus on your running form as well as getting over the fear of a hill. Find an incline that challenges you a little bit, start at the bottom and run up with effort, as soon as you get to the top, slow down, try not to completely stop and gently recover until you get to the bottom. Get your breath back and do it again. You can add a few of these into your normal route, you don’t have to do too many, it just helps mix things up and you will find quite quickly that you get stronger on the flat bits of your run.

The main thing is to try something different and see what works for you, have some fun, push yourself in a safe environment and see what happens. Have a go at recruiting some friends to run with as this always helps you stay motivated as you encourage each other through the tough bits.

Successful dating Are you living a lie?

As human beings, we fear pain and we hate having to make decisions. We like our comfort and our routine because it makes us feel safe. So, when we are unhappy, we try to find ways to not challenge the status quo so that we can make life bearable. Then what we do is that we hope. We hope that things will miraculously change.

But the truth is that things won’t change. Actually, things aren’t the problem at all, we are. And your life will not get any better until you accept that and start taking steps towards getting what you want.

Most of us will have done things that we are not necessarily proud of and I think it’s fair to say we probably all have some skeletons in our closets. Most of the time, they are just details that we would rather keep to ourselves, because they are kind of no longer relevant and just a part of our journey.

Some other things are much bigger. And sometimes, what we don’t say and admit to other people is how deeply unhappy we really are, either because of something that happened in the past or because of our current circumstances.

We are being dishonest. Not to anybody else but to ourselves. We pretend. We hide the truth and we do ‘the Ostrich’, burying our head in the sand, trying to believe that all is well and that it will get better when _______________________________ (fill in the blank). We live in the expectation that something is going to change and that everything is going to be ok, but we don’t do anything to make that happen. We often believe that we don’t have a choice but to stay as we are.

All these are signs that you are living a lie. And ultimately, it is going to hurt you. The longer you leave it and live it, the more damage and regret you will encounter.

When you are living a lie, you live in fear. You worry about what other people would think of you if they knew the truth, how they would judge you and if you would then become a disappointment. We are so worried about what other people think of us that we get stuck. In our head first and then in our lives.

The solution comes from a place of acceptance.

Recognising that you are living a lie but also that you are compromising your own integrity - with yourself. Some people experience guilt, either because of the past or because they believe they should somehow be thinking or feeling in a different way. Some even start to think that they deserve to be punished in some way.

What really needs to happen is that you need to forgive yourself for whatever you have done, said, think or feel.

You need to accept your own truth instead of repressing reality, and then start to make some changes to move out of this lie and place of limbo. All it takes is to make that one decision.

We fear the future so much because we worry the worst-case scenario will happen. But the future hasn’t happened yet, you are still to create it. Living a lie will keep you in a cage for the rest of your life where being true to yourself will not only set you free but bring you happiness too. Which would you rather?
