Good afternoon and a very warm Sixways welcome to Pat Lam, the players, coaches and staff of Bristol Bears.

Bristol come here on top of their game and top of the table. I was at the club for four years and I know how much work has been put in and it’s good to see they are now reaping the rewards.

However, it’s a great opportunity for us. There are fine margins in this competition. Whether you are playing someone at the bottom or Bristol, who are top, we always believe that we can win and we have a plan as to how we can challenge them today.

There is also a fine margin between success and failure in sport. My own career taught me that.

I was fortunate to have played in Celtic League and Grand Slam winning teams, so I know what success looks like.

But I have also been in teams that have failed or gone through times of adversity. That made me appreciate that the margin between success and failure is not as big as many people think.

At the moment we are going through a period of change at the club.

When a team or a business goes through transitional change there is always a messy middle and right now, we are in that messy middle.

Bristol are a good example of how, if you have a clear vision and stick to the process, what can happen.

We are very clear about the direction we are going in and there are a lot of very positive things going on behind the scenes. We are

in a good shape for our medium to long term plans.

In the short term we would obviously like to be winning more games.

But the real positive for us is the exposure that our young homegrown players are again getting which will be invaluable to the club in the future.

The way that you come through these periods is to stick with your process.

When it becomes emotional and you lose sight of the process, that’s when you are in trouble.

If it becomes emotional, it becomes a rollercoaster ride. You are either up or you are down. You need consistency as a human being and consistency as a player in your training habits.

So, we are keeping the players on track with the process that we need to go through. With hard work, selfawareness and knowing what we need to do to improve, we will come out the other side stronger.

I am proud of the hard work the players are putting in at training and their efforts in matches. The spirit within the camp is really good, culturally we are very strong and we are really tight as a group management and players – which is very important.

We also have the coaching team that we need to be successful. It’s important in co-coaching that you have chemistry in the group, that you are all aligned, and the players can see that you are aligned. Different mouths, but one tongue speaking the same message which is where we are the moment.

There is also a shared vision throughout the club about where we

want to go. From the owners, Solly, myself, Peter Kelly and the business side of the club, we share a common goal. There is a real connection, and the lines of communication are very strong.

We know that the path we are on is the right path and we are confident that it will take us to a better place.

Since our last home match against Wasps, we have further strengthened our squad for next season by signing Willi Heinz and Scott Baldwin, two more players who will bring international experience and leadership qualities.

They will both add real value to the squad and help to accelerate the development of our talented youngsters such as Fin Smith, who made his debut off the bench at Gloucester last week.

Fin is the second youngest player to represent the club in the Premiership and although we would have liked to have given him more game time, we want to make sure that we set him up to succeed.

Hopefully Fin will get more opportunities in the forthcoming Premiership Rugby Cup. We are delighted that Jamie Shillcock has extended his contract for another season. Shilly made his debut in my final season as a player here. He may not be a young man in age, but he still is in terms of experience and we look forward to helping him achieve his full potential.

Good afternoon and welcome to the players, staff and directors of Bristol Bears for this Gallagher Premiership match.

Unfortunately, our last scheduled home match against Newcastle Falcons was cancelled owing to positive COVID-19 tests in the Falcons camp which meant further disruption to our season.

Although we were awarded a four points ‘win’ for the cancellation, that is not the way that we would want to gain our victories. However, we are trying to play rugby in extremely challenging circumstances and the safety and wellbeing of players and staff is the sole concern in these matters.

Thankfully, there seems to be light at the end of a very long tunnel.

The vaccination programme – of which many of you will have already benefited – is having a positive effect and, if all goes to plan, we should be able to welcome supporters back to Sixways in the not-too-distant future.

You will also be aware that the RFU Council recently approved a moratorium on relegation from the Premiership and Championship this season and to work on changes to the professional game in England beyond this season.

We appreciate that promotion/ relegation is an emotive issue and one which divides opinion. As a club, Warriors would not be where we are now – among the top 12 clubs in England – had it not been for the ability to progress through the league pyramid through a series of promotions.

Much has changed since rugby went professional a quarter-of-a-century ago and the sport at the elite level is unrecognisable from that which was played when leagues were first introduced in 1987.

We believe that the decision not to relegate from the Premiership this season is a sensible one. Many businesses – not just Warriors or Premiership rugby clubs – have faced severe financial challenges over the past 12 months as a consequence of the restrictions on everyday life that COVID has forced on us.

To relegate anyone in a season that has been so badly affected

by COVID would be grossly unfair.

Suspending relegation gives all clubs the chance to plan ahead with a little more certainty and provides a period of welcome stability.

It is also an appropriate time for us – the RFU, Premiership and Championship clubs – to reevaluate and appraise professional club rugby in England to ensure that clubs are sustainable, the professional game is vibrant and competitive and that we support a successful England national side.

There are lots of exciting ideas and suggestions that will be discussed over the coming weeks and months and, no doubt, opposition to what some will perceive as ring-fencing the Premiership.

We do not subscribe to the theory that no relegation will mean a less competitive Premiership. There are other competitions – Six Nations, Super Rugby and the Pro-14 – that do not have promotion and relegation and you would not say that they are uncompetitive or unattractive to watch.

There are plenty of incentives in the Premiership – top four, top six and only 12 places available in the European competitions – and sheer professional pride means that noone wants to finish bottom, whether there is the jeopardy of relegation or not.

As a club we would never want to block the progress of other clubs who have – and who can prove they have – the ambition, financial stability and infrastructure to compete and add value to the Premiership.

But we do not want the boomand-bust clubs, of which there have been too many of the past, who have chased the Premiership dream without having the financial wherewithal or infrastructure to ensure sustainability.

You will know that during the three lockdowns we have been working on plans to develop the Sixways site and other strategies to ensure that Warriors remain a sustainable Premiership club for the long-term.

As owners we are determined to build on Cecil Duckworth’s amazing legacy.

In the short term, the RFU vote changes nothing for us. We have faith in the new coaching team that Alan Solomons has assembled and, although results have been disappointing, we have been busy strengthening the squad for next season with Willi Heinz and Scott Baldwin, two high-class and experienced international players, our latest recruits.

Willi and Scott both have strong leadership qualities and, like Chris Ashton, will be role models to help accelerate the development of our talented youngsters.

One of those youngsters, Fin Smith, made his debut as a replacement at Gloucester last week and became only the second 18-year-old to play for Warriors in the Premiership.

We look forward to seeing more of him in action in the coming months.

WORDS WITH A WARRIOR What has the mood been like in the camp this week after the performance at Gloucester?

Have things gone better than you expected this season?

We were very disappointed. We showed that we can create the opportunities, but it’s a matter of converting that pressure into points in our coming games.

Ollie Lawrence’s England call-up has created a gap here. Ollie always comes back from England with some good tips so he is good to learn off.

Our discipline was also a massive factor. We are our own worst enemy at times. I don’t think we are getting beaten, we are more beating ourselves and that has been the message this week.

Ash Beck and Francois Venter are also very helpful. Whoever is alongside you, they are a nice calm steady head who’s done it before.

They help to bring you back down to earth if you get a bit stressed or over-excited.

You’ve been getting some rave reviews this season. Is that something you’re aware of?

Sometimes we are too keen to get off the line.

We defended really well for large parts of the game, but then we would give away an off-side penalty which would ruin our momentum. It’s something that we have been working hard on and hopefully you will see an improvement this weekend.

At 14-5 it looked like you were well set?

It turned around very quickly. We should have scored more tries, but it’s a positive that we are creating those opportunities and if we keep doing that then, hopefully, we can convert more and more of them.

From a personal perspective you must be pleased with your form?

I am really grateful for the opportunities I am getting. It’s been a great season for me and for a lot of the young guys coming through actually.

COVID-19 has been terrible for everyone generally, but it has been good for young rugby players. With no relegation now, young players are being given game time and the time to develop.

With no Premiership Rugby Shield this season and the Championship only just getting underway, there have not been the usual opportunities for young guys, so it’s been great to see them getting chances in the Gallagher Premiership.

I do try to just focus within the club, what the coaches want from me, the thoughts of other players and my own thoughts too.

I am just trying to improve week on week and just keep to myself.

Where did you play your formative rugby?

I played mainly at New Hall School in Essex.

I got selected to play for Essex and then got picked up by the Saracens Academy at 15 or 16.

Did you follow the same route as your brother Dom? Yes, very similar. He’s two years older than me, but he went to New Hall and then into the Saracens Academy.

What’s the brotherly rivalry like?

It is competitive but more supportive/ competitive which is nice.

We have played in sides together, but never against each other. Obviously, there’s a possibility that might happen in the future.

I’m not sure what that will be like and, at the moment, it’s hard to picture it.

You almost beat Bristol at Ashton Gate in November. Does that give you confidence?

We could have beaten them. Tom Howe had a try disallowed in the second half and that decision was a big swing of momentum in the game.

You were at Saracens during a very successful period in their history. What was that like?

There was good depth in the squad, so I didn’t really get a look in at first team level, just a couple of Anglo-Welsh Cup games. However, I learned a lot there and I also went out on loan to Ampthill two seasons ago where we won National One and were promoted to the Championship.

We know they are not unbeatable, so that is a big positive for us. Our defence in that game was good and we took their running game and made it almost their weakness by just attacking them in defence. That’s going to be a big part of the game this weekend.

Ampthill played a different style of rugby, which helped me to develop my game in different areas and to adapt to how they played.

What brought you to Sixways?

It was Chim Gale, the former Academy Manager here. I met him a few years ago at a camp. He got in touch and said Warriors were keen and it went from there. I grabbed the opportunity and it has been a good decision.

Are you dual qualified internationally?

Yes, I’m eligible for England and Ireland. I qualify for Ireland through my grandmother on my dad’s side.

I played for England Under-18s and was in the Ireland Under-20s set-up two years ago, but didn’t actually play for them.

It’s Bristol today and they are flying at the moment.

They are playing well at the moment. They will bring tempo and we know it’s going to be a challenge, particularly in defence. We know they are going to throw the ball around, so we are looking forward to getting stuck into them.

They love to run from everywhere and they have a strong off-loading game. So we have to be alert all the time and be ready for anything. It’s a challenge we are looking forward to.

Is there a feeling that things will turn quickly with a win against a top side?

We’re not really focusing on results. We are seeing big improvements week on week, especially in training. The intensity is picking up, we can see those improvements and although a win would be great, performance comes first.

INTRODUCING BRISTOL BEARS

Bristol Bears moved six points clear at the summit of the Gallagher Premiership table last weekend by virtue of a comfortable 17-3 home victory over Leicester Tigers, capitalising on Exeter Chiefs’ defeat at Sale Sharks the previous evening.

Pat Lam’s side bounced back, defeating Worcester Warriors 30-13 – a score line which flattered the title contenders, who were only 11-8 up at the break. The turning point came in the second half when Warriors’ Tom Howe raced in after pouncing on a loose ball inside his own half, only to have the try chalked off with the video referee ruling Oli Morris to have infringed in the tackle. Warriors were badly hampered by injuries in the immediate aftermath of the disallowed try and sustained two yellow cards as Bristol made sure of the spoils in the shape of a penalty try.

Chiefs were beaten 25-20 in Greater Manchester to give Bristol the incentive to complete their eighth win in 11 games against a resurgent Tigers outfit.

Bristol had to come from 3-0 down to score two tries against 14 men thanks to Will Capon and Piers O’Conor, who both went over before the break. Ioan Lloyd landed both conversions and a penalty, the only score of the second half to push home Bristol’s advantage.

Lam’s troops were at it again on the first weekend of December, fighting back to secure a 18-17 victory over Northampton Saints on home soil. Bedlow’s last gasp penalty inflicted a ninth consecutive defeat on Northampton, who would have a significant upturn in fortunes going into 2021. Saints had victory snatched away from them after Ehren Painter was penalised for a deliberate knock-on. Converted scores from David Ribbans and Piers Francis had put Saints 14-5 up at the break, with Henry Purdy replying. O’Conor’s late try gave Bears hope of a dramatic turnaround and Bedlow’s boot provided the killer touch for the four points.

Leicester were understrength, having made 11 changes from their home win over Wasps a week earlier when they played almost three quarters of the game a player short and ended with 13 men.

Meanwhile, Bristol had got back to winning ways following their thrilling 34-34 draw at London Irish, a result which took them by surprise after being in the ascendancy at the interval. Bears were 31-13 up thanks to two Siva Naulago intercept tries coupled with further scores from O’Conor and Chris Vui.

As the bleak mid-winter reared its head in midDecember, European Rugby took centre stage with Bristol embarking on their Champions Cup campaign at home to Clermont Auvergne. Outshone from start to finish, Bristol were beaten 51-38 in their first Champions Cup clash since 2008 as Clermont’s Japanese full-back Kotaro Matsushima claimed a hat-trick of tries. Bristol did however take a try bonus point from the contest thanks to Lloyd’s touchdown, but the star-studded French proved too much for the Premiership side.

The Exiles dominated the second period to underline their character in abundance, Tom Parton’s late converted try levelling the game after Theo Brophy Clews and Nick Phipps had crossed the whitewash.

The nip and tuck nature of Bristol’s recent games have been in keeping with their season opener when they were edged out 23-20 by Wasps at Ricoh Arena back in November. Tom Willis’ late try dashed Bristol’s hopes of a win on their return to action after a shortened preseason due to the pandemic. A trio of Jimmy Gopperth penalties put Wasps in the box-seat after Sam Bedlow had kicked Bears ahead. Harry Randall burrowed over for the Ashton Gate outfit, before Jack Willis’ try – given after a review – put Wasps back in front.

A trip to Lam’s former club Connacht followed a week later, Bristol keeping their nerve to record a 27-18 win in Galway. Bryan Byrne scored the only try of a disjointed first half, before the visitors extended their lead following Bundee Aki’s yellow card, with scores from Ed Holmes and O’Conor. Tiernan O’Halloran brought Connacht back into the game just before the hour mark, but a Lloyd try proved decisive despite a late surge from the hosts.

Bears skipper Siale Piutau crossed to restore the visitors’ lead in a dramatic final quarter, but Tom Willis had other ideas as he touched down with two minutes left on the clock to nick the win.

Boxing Day saw Bristol win at The Stoop for the first time since 2001, coming from 9-5 down at half-time to seal a maximum point win thanks to tries from Dan Thomas, Steve Luatua, Randall and Niyi Adeolokun. Marcus Smith’s

consolation try late on salvaged a losing bonus point for Quins, who parted company with Head of Rugby Paul Gustard shortly after.

Bristol began 2021 in emphatic fashion, ending Newcastle’s 100 per cent start to the Premiership season with a 29-17 triumph. It was a gutsy challenge from Dean Richards’ Falcons who conceded a try within the first minute of the game as Ratu Naulago sprinted in from his own 22. George Wacokecoke responded for the visitors, and after Piutau powered over for Bristol, Mark Wilson crossed to cut Bears’ half-time lead to 1410. Nathan Hughes put Bristol in the ascendancy with a try after the break and George Kloska added the hosts’ fourth score to seal victory after Philip van der Walt had crossed for the Tyneside club.

The West Countrymen backed this up with an impressive 20-7 win at rivals Exeter to go top of the table and underline their title credentials. Randall and Randradra tries coupled with the boot of Sheedy did the damage against a shell-shocked Chiefs side. Bristol then recorded their third league win on the spin in 2021 with a 48-3 mauling of local rivals Bath at The Rec. Byrne was among the tries with a brace as Bristol ran in six scores in comparison to Bath’s solitary penalty.

In unpredictable style, Bristol suffered a surprise defeat at home to Sale Sharks – going down 20-13 after Luke James’ late try helped new boss Alex Sanderson guide his side up to second in the table. Now six points clear at the top of the log following victory at Leicester last weekend, Bristol will be hoping to push home their supremacy at Warriors today.

THREE TO WATCH PIERS O’CONOR Piers O’Conor has enjoyed a meteoric rise since arriving from Ealing Trailfinders ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

The versatile back, who can play centre, wing or full-back, was called up to the England squad to face the Barbarians at Twickenham in the summer of 2019 following impressive displays for Bears.

The former England Under-20 international picked up where he left off in the 2019/20 season, scoring a contender for try of the season against Bath on the opening day.

HARRY RANDALL

Fijian sensation Semi Radradra is one of the best players on the planet and joined Bristol Bears from Bordeaux in July 2020.

The electric Harry Randall has made quite an impression at Ashton Gate since joining in 2018.

The powerhouse back made an immediate impact at Ashton Gate, scoring three tries in the second half of the 2019/20 season and earned himself a place in the Gallagher Premiership team of the season.

Radradra was also shortlisted for the 2019.20 EPCR European Player of the Season accolade.

The scrum-half, who joined from Gloucester, is one of English rugby’s brightest young talents and in the 2019/20 Challenge Cup final he scored the fastest European try in history when he touched down after just 15 seconds against Toulon.

A standout individual across both rugby codes, Radradra averaged 100 metres a game at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, lighting up the competition pool stages with a string of sensational displays, including a brace against Georgia.

WARRIORS SIGN WILLI HEINZ

Warriors have made England international scrum-half Willi Heinz their fifth signing for the 2021/22 season.

Heinz will arrive at Sixways in the summer from Gloucester Rugby whom he joined in 2015 from Crusaders in his native New Zealand.

The 34-year-old has won 13 international caps from his debut against Wales at Twickenham in a Rugby World Cup warm-up match in August 2019 to a Guinness Six Nations appearance against the same opponents last March.

“As we have said publicly since we have come in as coaches, recruitment and retention is really important,” said Warriors Head Coach Jonathan Thomas.

“The impact of COVID-19 means that the salary cap is being reduced so you have to be smarter than ever with your recruitment.

“We are looking for cultural architects, people who can add value as a player first and foremost but also to the environment here at Sixways and helping the development of our young, homegrown players.

“Willi is a really valuable addition to our squad. He’s an international player – and has been recently – which is a huge thing for the club.

“Willi has an outstanding reputation from cultural and leadership aspects.

He’s experienced rugby in different parts of the world, he’s a huge addition to the club and I’m thrilled that he is joining us.”

Heinz joins Scotland international wing Duhan van der Merwe (Edinburgh), tighthead props Jack Owlett (Wasps) and Christian Judge (Bath Rugby) as well as fellow scrum-half Will Chudley (Bath Rugby) as new additions to Warriors’ squad for next season.

“After speaking with Solly, JT and all the coaches I am delighted to be joining Worcester at an exciting time in the club’s history,” Heinz said.

“They have a very clear vision of where they want to take the club, some young coaches who have alignment in terms of implementing this vision and also some very talented young players coming through their systems in addition to having made some really exciting signings.”

SCOTT BALDWIN HEADING TO SIXWAYS

Wales international hooker Scott Baldwin has become Warriors’ sixth new signing for the 2021/22 season.

Baldwin, capped 34 times between 2013 and 2017, will arrive at Sixways during the summer from Harlequins for whom he has been in sparkling form since he joined them from Ospreys two years ago.

The move will see Baldwin, 32, link up again with Warriors Head Coach Jonathan Thomas, who was a team-mate at Ospreys, Senior Assistant Coach Mark Jones, a former Wales Backs Coach, and Backs and Attack Coach Matt Sherratt, who joined Warriors from Ospreys last summer.

“I’m very excited about joining Worcester,” Baldwin said.

“I’ve worked with Matt Sherratt at Ospreys, played with Jonathan Thomas and also been coached by Mark Jones for the Welsh national side.

“They are all quality coaches and good people who I know have big ambitions for Worcester. I’m really looking forward to joining a talented squad and being part of this exciting journey.”

“We are really pleased that Scott has signed for us,” Thomas said.

“I know Scott well from his Ospreys days and, as with Willi Heinz, we feel that he will bring good leadership to the team.

“He has been in the Premiership Team of the Week for the last few weeks which clearly shows that he is still one of the best hookers in the competition.

“But we also feel there is a dual benefit for us in that he can help to bring through our young hookers like Beck Cutting and help to develop them as well as adding quality experience.

“He’s a 30-plus cap international and he is a huge signing for the club.

Warriors Women’s Heather Fisher and Alex Matthews have been named in the GB Sevens squad for the forthcoming campaign as all roads lead to the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics.

Made possible by an innovative commercial partnership with The National Lottery, GB7s will operate a banded pay structure which will give equal opportunities across both the men’s and women’s programmes to be financially rewarded at the same level.

“It’s great to be part of the training squad and it’s going to be a tough road, but an exciting one that I can’t wait to get stuck into,” said Fisher, who is one of four players in the squad from Rio 2016.

“A big thank you to Worcester for the support – they have been amazing.”

Matthews added: “With a year of complete uncertainty, I’m really looking forward to this opportunity and I will be giving it my all.

“I wouldn’t be in the place I am at the moment without their support.”

Women’s Head Coach Scott Forrest has selected a group of 19 players which features a number of experienced names who have competed in recent years on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series events and at international XVs level.

16 members of the squad have played club rugby in the Allianz Premier 15s throughout the 2020/21 season to date.

Hello folks!

It’s great news that very soon we might be seeing some of you through the gates at Sixways again that is, of course, if we all behave ourselves between now and then.

Live sport for me without a crowd - and I don’t care if it’s 80,000 at Twickenham or a couple of hundred watching Luctonians makes a huge difference!

I was asked last week just how much difference the crowd would make to a home team, or a wellsupported away team for that matter. It is debatable but let’s say your team are a point behind, there’s a minute to go and you get a lineout on the opposition five metre line. If the crowd doesn’t make a difference, then I am not too sure when it would.

On the other hand, of course, if your team are not playing well, the crowd can have the opposite effect.

Anyway, to today and welcome to Bristol Bears to Sixways for this afternoon’s or should that be this evening’s clash.

We all know of the Warriors versus Bristol clashes in the past and if anyone asks me which was the most dramatic game I have commentated on; it has to be that Championship play-off final second leg game here in 2015.

I’m sure I don’t have to remind too many of you about that evening. Warriors were 14 points down with very little time left but scraped home by one point over two legs.

There are not many players from that match who are likely to be involved today. Chris Pennell, Nick Schonert and G.J. van Velze are the only remaining Warriors who started that game, although Niall Annett and Jamie Shillcock were on the bench.

One Jonathan Thomas was also in the Warriors side, with Marco Mama turning out for Bristol. I do have to admit that, almost six years later, that Bristol were the better side on the night, and after dominating the league they should have been promoted. It was a pity that two clubs didn’t go up that season.

However, Pat Lam took them back up in 2018 and the rest, as

they say, is history. A European trophy last season and Bristol are top of the pile as they come to Sixways today, which is a great achievement.

I was sad to hear of the death of former Bristol, England and Lions hooker John Pullin recently. He was a great player, but very much remembered for captaining the England team in Dublin in 1972 during the Troubles after Wales and Scotland had refused to play there.

The England team got a fiveminute standing ovation when they ran onto the pitch, and at the post-match dinner after Ireland had won comfortably Pullin, as England captain, had to make a speech.

He came up with the classic line: “We may not be very good, but at least we turn up,” which brought another standing ovation.

Afternoon Folks!

There is certainly a lot of passion being exhibited on the various supporter forums and social media groups at the moment, which is great to see. It is important, however, that your comments remain respectful, on point and not personal or abusive.

It has been disheartening to see the number of posts directed at players, officials and pundits alike this weekend. This is something that we should not condone or tolerate.

Please remember our sport is based on respect, teamwork, discipline, sportsmanship and enjoyment.

As I write these notes, Scott Baldwin has been announced as our latest signing for next season and it’s clear that we are in another period of transition with JT at the helm as Head Coach. It is not easy being a Warriors supporter. We seem to be stuck in a perpetual relegation fight and haven’t yet managed to find the magic formula that will turn us into a top six team. Something, that not even the great Cecil Duckworth could find a solution too!

Is this the time? Regardless of whether you are a pessimist, optimist or opportunist, a new coaching structure has been put in place - Solly is looking after the off-field business and JT is not making excuses for losing games.

He is focussed on bringing in some

‘cultural architects’ to help change the mindset of the current playing group, that will, hopefully, create a winning culture.

Yes, I know we’ve heard it all before, but the mood music outside of Sixways is different. BT Sport talked positively about us last week and several rugby pundits have been championing JT – “he’s impressive. A clear, ambitious vision, keen to bring in some ‘cultural architects’ to guide his youngsters…You’d love to play for him,” said one.

I suspect we will see several changes in the playing squad as the ‘cap’ reduces to £5m next season.

A squad built on local academy products, with some seasoned players - Baldwin, Willi Heinz and Chris Ashton - brought into act as mentors and role models.

These are always difficult times for supporters as we will have our favourites, players that we have invested in emotionally, and it is disappointing when they leave.

Yet, they go with our best wishes and thanks - they will always be Warriors.

These are unique times, and this latest lockdown is proving difficult for everyone, so it was really uplifting to see the Community Foundation recognising and rewarding members of the local community, who have gone above and beyond

to help others since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Well done.

Finally, one of our supporters, Millie Hayter, who suffers with crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and is registered blind is undertaking a challenge to cycle the full distance covered in the Tour de France – 3,500 kilometres – from her own living room whilst she is shielding. A pro-cyclist would complete this in 23 days, but Millie is not one of those, so she has set herself a realistic 35 days. That is 35 days cycling for between five and six hours every day, if her body lets her. Just let that sink in.

She is doing it to raise much needed funds of the Warriors Community Foundation. A cause that is close to her heart as she is an active member of the Inclusion Rugby & Hugby teams. She also took part in the Visually Impaired Three Peaks Challenge in 2018, an event that really took her out of her comfort zone.

She has set herself a modest target of £200, but this challenge deserves so much more. She is a true Warrior.

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION PROJECT RUGBY GAVE MATT LANCETT THE SPRINGBOARD TO INTERNATIONAL HONOURS

A keen sportsman throughout his life, Matt Lancett’s involvement with the Warriors Community Foundation mixed ability team has launched him into the international spotlight.

“After proving himself with the visually impaired group, we pushed Matt towards the mixed ability team here at Worcester and he’s just gone from strength-to-strength.

Sessions provided by Premiership Rugby’s ground-breaking Project Rugby programme, in partnership with Gallagher and the RFU, engaged thousands of people per year from traditionally under-represented groups, including those with disabilities.

“The way he interacts with everyone around the place is phenomenal and before the pandemic hit, we were having conversations about him gaining his coaching qualifications and joining our staff.

Matt suffered a stroke in August 2017 and was left with homonymous hemianopia – without left-field of vision in both of his eyes. He also suffers with headaches, hyper sensations and numbness down his left side of the body.

Having previously run marathons and been a keen footballer, he got involved with the visually impaired rugby team at Warriors before establishing himself as a lead figure in their mixed ability squad.

Matt is one of the inspirational people that we will be turning the spotlight on across Round 12 of Gallagher Premiership Rugby (March 5-7) when all matches will be dedicated to our award-winning community programmes that benefit around 250,000 people annually.

Warriors Community Foundation adapted sports lead Chris Stephenson believes Matthew’s selection to tour Japan with the Change Foundation’s visually impaired England team in 2019 was a testament to his progress on and off the field.

“He’s blossomed since he started coming down to our sessions,” said Stephenson.

“His impairment was quite new at the beginning and he was low on confidence and a bit apprehensive, but he quickly realised his disability wasn’t the end of the world.

“He went over to Japan alongside fellow Warriors player Chris Styles and I know that was a massive experience for both of them.

“Rugby has provided a huge boost for Matt, and I know on top of his commitment to the Project Rugby sessions, he is a full-time Worcester supporter now.

He meets up with another member of the visually impaired team for every game, which is great for him socially.”

As well as those with disabilities, Project Rugby aims to increase participation in the game amongst those with ethnically diverse or lower socioeconomic backgrounds through sessions delivered by community staff at each of Premiership Rugby’s clubs at more than 200 locations across England.

Stephenson explains however, this is just one aspect of a huge community effort at the Warriors Community Foundation, who have worked hard to overcome the challenges presented by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic over the last 12 months.

He added: “It’s been tough over the last year or so – I think we’re all Zoomed out! We’ve just been trying to keep people occupied and in touch with each other, because we know how important the social aspect of things is to a lot of our guys.

Matt has stepped up in that respect because he’s someone who takes charge of the chat rooms. But I think I speak for him and everyone else when I say that we can’t wait to get back out onto the pitch.”
