HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT ROBERT H. BECKETT ’57 DOCTOR OF ENGINEERING privately held U.S. companies every year from 1984 to 1987. Beckett, himself, was recognized as Entrepreneur of the Year by Arthur Young and Venture magazine in 1988 and inducted into the Institute of American Entrepreneurs as a lifetime member. In 1994, he decided to merge Robec with AmeriQuest Technologies, based on the West Coast, with the aim of creating a strong nationwide organization. Beckett served as senior vice president of the combined company until he retired in 1996. He is currently president and CEO of Tribo Surface Engineering, a company that enhances the surface properties of materials. He also provides investment capital and marketing and management services to startup companies. Throughout his career Beckett’s ties to his alma mater have remained steadfast. In 1987 the university welcomed him into the Presidential Founders, and the WPI Alumni Association honored him with the Robert H. Goddard Alumni Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement. Over the years his gifts have helped fund the construction of several buildings, and the Robert H. and Patricia A. Beckett Scholarship has paid forward the generosity that once opened the doors of opportunities for Beckett, himself. A trustee for the Pennington School, Beckett served as a member of WPI’s board from 1984 to 2004 and has been an emeritus trustee since then. He chaired the board’s Development Committee and served in leadership roles for several fundraising campaigns, including his current role as campaign co-chair for “If…The Campaign to Advance WPI.” He has served on the WPI Annual Fund board and the WPI Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 2002 WPI presented him with the Herbert F. Taylor Alumni Award for Distinguished Service to WPI. For his entrepreneurial vision and courageous spirit, for the unyielding determination he has demonstrated in his career and life, and for his generous gifts of time and resources to his alma mater, WPI is honored to confer upon Robert Beckett the degree of Doctor of Engineering, Honoris Causa.
Robert Beckett has always been an entrepreneur at heart. So when he crossed the stage in Alden Memorial in 1957 to receive his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering, he knew he would start his own business—someday. It would take nearly 20 years to reach that goal. Beckett grew up in a family of modest means. In high school he excelled in math, physics, and football. After graduation he attended the Pennington School and was accepted to several colleges, but he lacked the means to pay his way. A visit from WPI football coach Charles McNulty convinced him that he could fulfill his dream of getting a college education. That visit led to a matriculation scholarship from WPI. His first job was with Leeds and Northrup, where he moved up the ladder from sales to instrumentation development. When the president of K-Tron Inc. called to ask for help fashioning a device to measure dry material as it passed along a conveyor belt, Beckett and his colleagues created and patented what would become the first digital gravimetric belt feeder; this work led to a job for Beckett as K-Tron’s vice president of sales and marketing. Beckett went on to become director of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) marketing at Decision Data, a company that made the first buffered punched card peripherals for computers. Seeing the enormous potential represented by desktop computers, Beckett was inspired to finally make the leap from employee to entrepreneur. At a time when most companies were simply selling individual components, Beckett differentiated his company, Robec (the name is derived from his first and last names), by identifying applications and software tailored to certain industry segments and customer needs. The result was a near overnight success. The company, which began with two employees in 1978, celebrated its fourth anniversary with a staff of 20 and annual sales of nearly $4 million. Sales jumped to more than $200 million by year 16, when Robec’s workforce exceeded 400. As president and CEO, Beckett saw his thriving enterprise make Inc. magazine’s list of the 500 fastest growing

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT CAROL T. CHRIST DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS Christ’s imprint has been felt well beyond the physical boundaries of the college. She’s dedicated herself to expanding Smith’s global presence by forging partnerships such as Women’s Education Worldwide, a 50-college initiative jointly launched with Mount Holyoke College that works to increase female access to quality education. She collaborated on the Women in Public Service Project, a joint effort of leading women’s colleges and the Department of State that works to invigorate the presence of women in the public sector. Last year, under Christ’s guidance, Smith accepted a role as academic planning partner in the Asian Women’s Leadership University, to be established in Malaysia. In addition to global work, Christ has demonstrated a commitment to her local community by building strong relationships with organizations throughout Northampton, Smith’s home city. She has worked with Northampton’s mayor and residents to address such issues as affordable housing, downtown business improvement, and support for public schools. She is a member of the boards of the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech and of Northampton’s renowned Academy of Music. Her service to higher education includes serving on the boards of the Consortium on Financing Higher Education (COFHE), the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), and Sarah Lawrence College, and working as a science education advisor to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Her commitment and service have brought her welldeserved accolades. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences named her a fellow in 2004 in recognition of her leadership in higher education, and in 2007 she received Yale University Graduate School’s highest honor, the Wilbur Lucius Cross Medal, recognizing her achievements in scholarship, teaching, administration, and public service. For her passionate support for women’s education, her commitment to fostering female leadership, and her global vision for diversity, WPI is honored to confer upon Carol T. Christ the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa.
As a champion of women’s issues and a trailblazer in higher education, Carol Christ found an invigorating home at Smith College, where she has spent more than a decade as its 10th president. When she concludes her tenure in June, she will leave behind a lasting mark, one etched by her dedication to diversity, innovation, strategic planning, and global thinking. The transformative power of education has defined Christ’s life and career. In 1966 she graduated with honors from Douglass Residential College, the women’s college of Rutgers University. She earned a PhD in English at Yale and in 1970 joined the English faculty at the University of California, Berkeley. As chair from 1985 to 1988, she built one of the nation’s top-ranked English departments. She went on to become the university’s first dean of humanities and then served as provost and dean of the College of Letters and Sciences, vice chancellor and provost, and executive vice chancellor. In that last role she sharpened the institution’s intellectual focus and built top-rated departments in the humanities and sciences. A New York City native, Christ was lured back to the East Coast in 2002 by the opportunity to lead Smith. Working collaboratively and embracing ideas from colleagues, the Smith community, and beyond, she has endeavored to prepare the college for the changes sweeping higher education. Under her leadership, the school has expanded its science curriculum and advanced the only accredited engineering program at a women’s college. The diversity of the Smith student body has increased dramatically, as has the enrollment of international students and opportunities for studying abroad. Christ instituted “The Smith Design for Learning: A Plan to Reimagine a Liberal Arts Education,” which was devised by the faculty and outside scholars with the goal of identifying areas of priority for the institution’s curriculum. The plan has guided increased investment in global studies, environmental sustainability, and community engagement. Always looking ahead, Christ also launched the Futures Initiative, a strategic project that anticipated education in 2030 and beyond, positioning Smith for continued long-term success. 6

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT ERIC S. LANDER DOCTOR OF SCIENCE So Lander set out to balance his love of theory with practice. He began teaching economics and, on the side learned biology, first at Harvard and then at MIT. He loved the collaborations he was able to forge with the scientists he encountered, and he even found a way to build a bridge between his old love and his new flame by applying mathematical theory to genetic diseases. At age 30 he received a “genius” grant from the MacArthur Foundation. It further solidified his path to becoming one of the foremost experts in genetics. Lander, who in addition to his post at the Broad Institute, is a professor of biology at MIT, where he’s been on faculty since 1989, and a professor of systems biology at Harvard Medical School, where he’s taught since 2004. He has received well-deserved recognition from his peers, having been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In addition to the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, he has earned such distinguished honors as the Gairdner International Award and the Max Delbrück Medal. He has also received the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research and the New York Academy of Medicine Medal for Distinguished Contributions in Biomedical Science. Earlier this year he accepted the presigious Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, which recognized his work creating powerful methods for finding the basis of disease. Lander wields a trusted voice in the public and private spheres. He has advised numerous agencies, foundations, and businesses. In 2008 President Obama appointed him to cochair the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. For his pioneering work in the field of genetics, his profound insights into health and disease, and his lifelong dedication to balancing theory with rigorous practice, WPI is honored to confer upon Eric Lander the degree of Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa.
Theory and practice steer the career of Eric Lander, a mathematician-turned-geneticist who is revolutionizing the world's understanding of genes and disease. A pioneer in human genetics, Lander helped lead the Human Genome Project and is now president and founding director of The Eli and Edythe L. Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, as well as an advisor to President Barack Obama. With immense dedication and an unrelenting drive to solve problems, Lander epitomizes the notion that knowledge has the greatest impact when it is rigorously applied. Throughout his career, Lander has sought answers to fundamental questions about life by breaking large, complex biological systems down into their smallest constituent parts. That’s what he did at the Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research, which became a flagship laboratory for the Human Genome Project. There, Lander and his team dedicated themselves to mapping the three billion base pairs that make up the double-stranded DNA molecules packed into human chromosomes. By working with scientists around the world to deconstruct the code for the human organism, they helped build a map scientists can follow to hunt for clues to how we function. In his current work at The Broad Institute, Lander is using that map to chart the role that the genome plays in the biology of diseases like cancer, diabetes, and inflammatory disorders. The institute is home to a small army of interdisciplinary scientists who collaborate to apply genome-based science to medicine. Among their aims is to understand the circuitry of the cell and how it influences health and disease; to identify the biological factors that make us susceptible to disease; and to catalog mutations that may point to better cancer treatments and diagnostic tools. Lander began his career steeped in theory. He graduated as valedictorian from Princeton in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. At the age of 20 he entered Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, earning his PhD in mathematics in just two years. Despite his enthusiasm for the field, he worried that math would be too solitary a discipline.

A FEW NOTES ABOUT COMMENCEMENT DAY The annual graduation ceremony is an important milestone in the lives of our students and their families. The information on these pages will help assure this is an enjoyable and memorable event for everyone.
Photos before the ceremony: Degree candidates line up for the processional around 9:30 a.m. The line of graduate students begins in front of Boynton Hall and curves around the building toward Gordon Library. The line of undergraduate students begins near the library. Guests are asked to finish taking photos and proceed to the Quadrangle by 10:15.
PROCESSIONAL AND RECESSIONAL— The ceremony begins at about 10:30 a.m. with the processional. The marchers line up in front of Boynton Hall in the following order: honorary marshal, the colors, honorary marshal for graduate students, candidates for graduate degrees, ceremonial marshal, candidates for undergraduate degrees, faculty members, and the stage party. The procession moves across Earle Bridge and follows the roadway past Alden Memorial and Sanford Riley Hall toward the Sports and Recreation Center, then moves onto the Quadrangle. (Guests are asked to not block the progress of the processional. It is especially important to keep the center aisle clear so marchers may make their way to their seats.) At the ceremony’s conclusion, the marchers, in reverse order, move down the center aisle and proceed toward Reunion Plaza. Again, guests are asked not to interfere with their progress. This year’s honorary marshal is Mark Richman, associate professor of mechanical enginering and winner of the 2013 Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Teaching. The honorary marshal for graduate students is Roger Gottlieb, professor of humanities and arts and winner of the 2013 Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Scholarhip. The ceremonial marshal is Eric W. Overström, provost. The baton carried by the honorary marshal is the walking stick of John Boynton, a founder of WPI. President Berkey wears the Presidential Medallion, with the WPI seal cast in silver and the names and years of service of all 15 of WPI’s presidents engraved on small silver plates that form links in the chain. Provost Overström carries the Academic Mace, a 42-inch-tall staff made from fluted cherry wood topped with a circular silver pedestal on which sits, on edge, a large silver medal that has the WPI seal on both sides. (The Presidential Medallion and the Academic Mace were gifts to the university from President Berkey and his wife, Catherine, in 2007.)
Photos of the ceremony: Commencement Photographers Inc. will take a photograph of every graduate receiving his or her diploma. The company will mail proofs and an order form to graduates or their families. In addition, WPI will videotape the entire ceremony from several vantage points. For more information about the photo service, you may call Commencement Photographers at +1-978-851-5924. Video excerpts from the ceremony will be linked from the WPI home page (wpi.edu) the afternoon of Commencement day. A complete, high-quality video of the ceremony will be available for downloading within two weeks at wpi.edu/+Commencement. Photos after the ceremony: If you’d like to capture your happy graduate after the ceremony, we recommend the following locations: •The Stage Area: After the procession has left the Quadrangle, guests are invited to take photos on or near the stage (WPI banner and plantings in background). •Earle Bridge: Spanning West Street, the footbridge is decorated with flowering plants. •Boynton Hall: WPI’s first building, with its granite exterior and clock tower, is located just across the footbridge. •Higgins House: This WPI mansion, located directly behind the Campus Center, is surrounded by plantings and formal gardens that are in full bloom at this time of year.
PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEOS— The photographs and videos you take today will be treasured mementos. The following information should help all of our guests get the shots they want. As the processional begins, members of the faculty, attired in colorful robes, line both sides of Earle Bridge to pay tribute to the graduates as they cross the bridge for the final time before receiving their diplomas.

For Tech. For good good old old Worces-ter Worces-ter Tech
Following his graduation in 1910, Willard Hedlund taught civil engineering at WPI until 1913. He later served the city of Worcester as superintendent of public buildings. Hedlund’s original version of the Alma Mater has seen a few changes over the years; these are the lyrics currently sung on the WPI campus. A second stanza often follows: As years roll on, and changes bring, To all things great and small We still will thee in rev’rance hold, We’ll greet thee, one and all In accents which no one will doubt, In terms so strong and bold The world will know thy worth to us Increases many fold. Then here’s to good old Worcester Tech, Come, fellows, join in our refrain Wave high the colors crimson and gray, For good old Worcester Tech 56
