mountain. If we want to get there, we have to make the choice. We have to cross the line, commit to finish what we started and then dig deep and push through to the end. The road to success, whatever that means to you, and the road to excellence are tough, and we will have to push our limits; but once we have reached our goals the euphoria is nearly unparalleled. The progress may be slow and the road hard, but once we cross that line we have to realise the option to turn back no longer exists. The following term is important for many of us. For the grade 11s especially — these marks determine our future (in case you haven’t heard yet). So set out on that journey to your dreams, make the choice, and go get it. For those who are younger, start training - get fit now. When that long grade 11 and 12 hikes come, you’ll be glad you did. And to conclude, just because you’re committed to making it up your mountain doesn’t mean the journey has to be painful. You’ll have to make jokes, laugh, stop and enjoy the view and sing a few Disney songs along the way. Just stay on track, and when you get to the top your entire process may become a happy memory. I wish all of you strength for the term ahead. Keep a-goin’,

I nterschools is always one of the main events on the Gimmie calendar, but by this time the outcome has become a little, how can I say, predictable. Win, win, win. The Gimmies don’t SEEM to know how to lose! This article will teach them to do just that. Disclaimer: DO NOT try this at Interschools! The information in this article is for humour purposes and must not be taken as actual instructions.

Forget what sport you are playing while on the field. Be a rugby player in a hockey game or a netball player in a hockey game if you feel like it. Although hilarious, you might get a red card or even cost your team the game, so double check that you have the right sport before you start busting out your awesome sport moves.

Fake an injury at every chance you get. All you have to do is watch a few soccer games on YouTube and you’ll learn how to do it in no time. Who knows, you might even get helped by a hot first-aider.

Get “lost” while looking for the sing-songs pavilion and wander into the middle of the chess games, singing and encouraging them loudly. When Mrs. Nel said to have Gimmie Gees I’m not sure that that is what she meant.

4

5

Manners are very important, so when the other team has the ball let them have a turn to score with it. If they don’t return the favour, don’t worry, you were the better person. Who needs a winning score when you can get that warm fuzzy feeling in your heart?

In rugby, ignore all the offside rules and when the ref blows the whistle just keep going. See how many tries you can get before someone thinks of a way to stop you. You’ll almost definitely lose the game, but who’s going to remember the score after that performance?

If you can’t make a breakthrough in your hockey game, put the ball between your feet and jump across the field. The other team will be so stunned that they’ll just stand there. The refs on the other hand might give you a card or even give the other team a free shot at goal. At least you’ll have been the first person in history to do that specific skill on the hockey field.

Become the most selfish player in netball history and pass only to yourself. Repeatedly throw the ball into the air and catch it again. If the other team is smart, they’ll push you out of the way, but then you can plead contact and go on with your one-woman game. It’ll be the most frustrating and boring game of netball EVER.

Do the whole pom-pom dance with your backs to the audience. If you want to make it even weirder you can do the whole dance backwards, starting with the last move and ending with your beginning!

6 7 8

So, if you want to put a new meaning to the words, sportsmanship, singsongs and Interschools, then this article is your ticket. Just make sure to have a camera nearby to capture the shocked, furious or laughing faces of the people who happen to catch you in the act.

ome one, come all — the circus is in town! We came, we saw, we clowned around. The 2019 Bravo Evening was a huge success, from aerial dances, piano performances and the astonishing choir that always delivers. After weeks of practice, long hours and many coffees later, the long awaited Bravo evening finally arrived. The theme for the Bravo Evening was, “A Night at the Circus” and this show definitely lived up to the title. Kleinplasie will forever hold the endless memories from the Gimmies. We were welcomed by our ringmaster for the night, Francois Prinsloo. This was followed by a series of incredible performances from Ying-Shang and Isabella Boshoff. The crowd was aroused while instant classics like ABBA was being performed by the choir. This was followed by a number of amazing performances, even including a ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ cover done by the girls of Worcester Gymnasium. The first act ended with a breath-taking waltz by the dancers. The guests were spoiled with a lovely dinner served by the Gimmies themselves. After lots of mingling and chatting the performers were back for Act 2 and the show was only getting started! The second act kicked off with an epic drum solo by an old Gimmie, Micheal Moore. Giancarlo Abrahams and Elchen Swart gave an astonishing performance of the iconic song, ‘Man in the Mirror’ by Micheal Jackson. This was followed by many amazing performances, including some aerial dances done by Summer-Joy Hendricks and Zalika Koopman. Doctor Pretorius surprised everyone with a special performance with Tanecha Cupido of their rendition of ‘Candyman’. A performance that stood out was ‘Beds are burning’ done by Francois Prinsloo, Giancarlo Abrahams and Bruce-John Joseph. While they were performing, parents and guests were singing along and clapping, it was incredible. The night ended with a heartfelt song by Dr. Pretorius and Juf. Swart. It was very emotional for the Matrics of 2019 because they started their journey with the choir at the same time as Dr Pretorius 5 years ago. The Bravo Evening was the perfect way to end the choir season. A special thanks, once again, to Mrs Rabie and Dr Pretorius, without whom this event wouldn’t even be possible.

Geelperskes

Deur Annalou Viljoen | Foto’s deur Miché Wium

“Ligte, kamera, aksie!”

A: My rol. V: Waaroor handel hierdie toneelstuk? Welgedaan, Geelperskes-span!

Directed by Mrs. Neetling and Kaylin Berg, who helped with the costumes and sound effects backstage, the cast had a lot of fun rehearsing and getting ready for their big night. Henno Conradie says, ”This play was a great experience for us, especially when we got to perform. Each practice was filled with laughter, which was mostly thanks to Mrs Neethling. She was an excellent drama teacher, who always added humor into the teaching. She helped us a great deal, and we learned a lot.” 2019 was a great year for drama. We can barely wait to see what 2020 holds in store, but remember, with great power comes great responsibility.

I dusted off my dance shoes and practiced my smile for an epic evening of dancing and good vibes. I was so excited to play dressup and celebrate with my fellow matrics!

THE PROS AND CONS OF BEING SINGLE Romeo and Juliet? Or Third Wheel?

B

eing single means you can do whatever you want, whenever you want ― but sometimes, all you want is someone to split the cost of a pricey double date.

LARISSA LOUW (graad 9) klou sterk aan ’n aanhaling deur Nicorene Louw: “Why have one when you can have them all?”

“Irriterend tydens tweede pouse.”

No obligations.

NADELE: Geen. Dis alles voordele!

COrné havenga: PROS: A lot of time on my hands and you don’t have to stress about dates. CONS: You don’t have someone to daydream about .

Jenna Hancke: VOORDELE: Minder stress.

Maybe all you want is a person to give you that bit of extra attention ... Kyk of die voordele of die nadele vir jou swaarder weeg, en dan sal jy weet of hoërskoolverhoudings die ding vir jou is. The choice is yours! deur Jané van Eck

H

ave you ever walked through the school passage with one thing on your mind (“Don’t be late!”) only to be distracted by someone who seems to look very familiar? You have to turn your head twice, just to make sure, because you are sure you saw them on Netflix last night!

These Gimmies are nearly identical to some very famous faces:

Ronaldo Camacho - Dacre Montgomery I know we are all still healing from that heart-breaking scene from the hit-show on Netflix, Stranger Things, when Billy Hargrove sacrificed himself to save the world. But did you know that we have our very own Billy here in school! They don’t share any interests, but they both are extremely fit, ladies.

Morgan Furley - Gary Goodspeed From the new animated Netflix show, Final Space, the main character, Gary, is a tall, blonde, talkative and short tempered guy, which is an exact description of Morgan himself. But other than looks they both share a love for chocolate-chip cookies and while Gary wears jumpsuits, Morgan can often be seen wearing his tiger onesie.

Hollywood Lookalikes By Lidia Hugentobler

Photos: Liam Waters

Braam Visser - Tobey Maguire We all know Toby from the first live action Spider-Man film in 2002 which was so iconic. Although the two don’t have that much in common, other than they both like building puzzles, Braam’s favourite superhero is Spider-Man. And after some very tough decision making, Braam states that his favourite Spider-Man actor was Tobey.

Stella Byleveld - Kate Mckinnon Kate has been a popular actress for a while now, starring in some popular movies like Ghostbusters, Masterminds and even Finding Dory. Kate and Stella share more than looks; they both are creative people who like to paint and keep themselves busy by talking to themselves. But they also don’t have that much in common: Kate likes cats while Stella likes dogs. Kate’s favourite meal is breakfast but Stella prefers lunch and supper.

Amy-Joy Gabriel - Mila Kunis Starting her career in the American sitcom, “That ‘70s Show”, Mila has become a popular actress. One main feature that they share is big radiant eyes with long eyelashes. Mila and Amy do not share many interests, however they both love to read.

Juanita Mcpheerson - Esmeralda Since the 2019 Mr & Miss WG, we were all shocked when we took a first glance at Juanita’s photos and realised that she really is the living version of the animated character from Disney’s, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame! Juanita looks like a replica of Esmeralda and they both share a talent and love for dancing.

So when you see one of these faces again, stop, stare for a whilel, take a picture or even ask for an autograph!

The mystery of the DISAPPEARING It’s no shock to us all that slowly but surely members of the Worcester Gymnasium staff are happening to suddenly “obtain new positions”, “retire” or “move to new locations”, all around the same time, if I must add. Some would even call these occurrences a series of supernatural activities.

But where exactly are these teachers disappearing to? Could they be telling the truth with these normalised statements or are they lies to cover up a bigger mystery? Here are a few conspiracies which could help lead us to the truth of these disappearances.

Conspiracy 1 It’s no surprise that the topic of Area 51 became a hit in the last couple of months. However, if you slowly back track to the start of this meme you will see that it became viral on June 27th 2019. For some this could just be a date, but if you look closer, this is around the time that our own previous head of the Circum, Mr van Niekerk happened to obtain a “higher position.” If you think about this in depth, could he too have been involved with the planning of the raid of Area 51, who now needed an escape before people discovered his identity? Is this why he decided to flee so suddenly? Well, if you put 2 and 2 together, the facts all fit together like pieces of a perfectly planned puzzle.

Conspiracy 2 The Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, will forever be changed. Coincidently on July 21st the MCU released images of the new era for

teachers

Marvel, known as Phase 4. This was only the date that it was released to the public, therefore the cast would’ve had the knowledge of this “new phase” months in advance. This would’ve been enough time for the heroes of the school to decide to become the heroes of the world. Since many superheroes have to hide their identities from the public eye, our beloved teachers were sadly not allowed to reveal their true characters. Therefore, they decided to flee the school of Worcester Gymnasium before anyone uncovered their true identities and put the lives of every learner in danger. So yes, when they said that they were “moving to a new location”, this was not a lie, but it was not the complete truth. They were simply being transferred to Marvels new headquarters to be briefed for their next mission.

Conspiracy 3 Last and certainly not least. Global warming, the burning of the Amazon Rainforest and all the pollution were headlines on the covers of many online articles. However, a recently known natural phenomenon was the discovery of new planet that could be seen as the human race’s next home. Theories about the world ending in “18 months” went viral all across the globe. This triggered the population and scared the lives of many. Could the disappearing teachers have known about these natural phenomena and already planned their escape to the new planet to start a new elite force? Instead of leaving all at once and make it seem suspicious, they were smart and slowly left one by one, to cover their tracks. Hopefully these could’ve answered some of your questions to the mystery of the disappearing teachers. By Nabilah

Williams

Thinking of exams makes me feel as if a dark cloud of sorrow and misery has floated over my life. It also makes me think of LOTS of coffee and of course, stress eating. That is why I’ve decided to share some of my favourite spring themed snacks that will be keeping the bellies full and giving the dark cloud of misery a splash of sunshine! Shout out to my Mom for these wise words,” there is nothing that a good tasting snack can’t fix” – Thanks Mom, for your wise words. #whenyourmomisGandhi. For my spring themed edition of Cooking with Bee, I have decided to make a Tear Bread and Bar-one mini no-bake cheesecakes!

Add a cup of water to a small pot and bring the water to a boil over medium heat. Cut the Bar-ones into small chunks and add to a small heat-proof bowl ( large enough to fit over the pot without touching the boiling water) Add ¼ of the cream cheese to the chocolate and allow to melt over the steam. Stir until nearly melted and smooth, remove from the heat and stir until everything is completely melted. Allow to cool slightly. In a large bowl, mix together the 1¾ cream cheese, icing sugar and vanilla essence.

5.

Add the Bar One ganache and mix through. 6. Scoop the cheesecake mixture into silicone trays. 7. Crush biscuits finely with a rolling pin in a resealable plastic bag. 8. Add a 2 tablespoons of butter to the biscuit crumbs. 9. Add a layer of biscuit crumbs to the cheesecake mixture and press down lightly to secure. 10. Place the cream cheese bites into the freezer to set, for 3-5 hours. 11. Remove from ice-trays 10 minutes before serving and enjoy!

May we as food lovers forever live by the following words, ”eat whatever you want, and if people judge you for it, eat them too!” (I am not promoting cannibalism in any way …) Make every moment of these last few months count! Matrics, study hard, but eat harder! As Mr Schoeman would say – Go MAD, go make a difference. And always, HAPPY COOKING.
