Onwards and upwards Hello and welcome to the first (and very special) edition of Installers’ Choice 2021.

Before going onto our news, I wanted to take this time to reflect on the past year and most importantly say thank you.

Thank you for your patience. COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on every industry, with the heating sector being no different. But you stuck with us as we all adapted to new restrictions and guidelines, while continuing to support you and your customers.

Thank you for your compassion. Nearly 5,000 of you signed up to our Safe in Your Home Installer Commitment, to ensure that you could continue to provide your local customers with heating and hot water, whilst reassuring them of their safety when entering their homes.

Finally, thank you for your ongoing support. Installers are the most essential part of the heating industry. To know you have been by our side during this challenging time means the world to us at Worcester Bosch.

Having said that, we are very excited that in this issue, we will be focusing on our new and exciting product range – the Greenstar 4000!

04 | Looking to the future

A future for hydrogen Martyn Bridges outlines possible routes to a future with hydrogen heating.

The UK government has committed to a net zero emissions future by 2050. As many of you know, the transition to this target is challenging to say the least. With around 15% of the country’s CO2 emissions coming from heating and hot water, the heating industry has a huge part to play.

The UK has a remarkable gas infrastructure with around 136,000 miles of pipework connecting over 23 million homes and businesses to the grid. One of the many ways the government plans to move us to net zero is to substitute the current methane gas supply with hydrogen, which at the point of use will not produce any carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide emissions.

To transition to 100% hydrogen will take some years in planning and preparation and ultimately will require exchanging the current installed base of gas appliances to hydrogen-ready appliances.

The government may decide that only hydrogen-ready appliances can come onto the market from the mid to late 2020s. These are appliances that can initially be connected to the natural gas supply and operated as normal until hydrogen becomes available in the area.

At that point, a small conversion requiring two or three inexpensive components taking an hour of an engineer’s time will allow the boiler to run on 100% hydrogen.

In the short term though, it is possible the government may introduce small blends of hydrogen and biomethane to the grid to start this transition to 100% hydrogen.

A 20% blend of hydrogen would decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 8%.

Initial trials have taken place (with more to follow) that have demonstrated that it is technically possible to blend up to 20% hydrogen and 80% methane and run most existing gas appliances in this way.

A 20% blend of hydrogen would decrease carbon dioxide emissions by eight per cent. This would also assist in meeting some of the carbon budgets the government has to meet before 100% hydrogen gas is feasibly available on a wide scale.

All Worcester Greenstar condensing boilers built since their introduction in 2002 and the Bosch commercial boilers of similar age, including the Worcester GB162 series, are suitable to carry a 20% blend of hydrogen should it be introduced into the gas grid.

We are confident that hydrogen is a viable, zero carbon alternative to natural gas in heating and will fit well in the future technology mix, alongside heat pumps, bio-oil and renewables. This is even more realistic if hydrogen-ready boilers are to be mandated.

This would speed the transition to carbon-free heating in domestic and commercial buildings and would be less disruptive to homeowners, ultimately helping the UK to reach net zero 2050. ■

From a government perspective, this would be a sensible 'no regrets' policy change as there are around 1.7m boilers installed annually. In fact, this would also be highly effective, as a hydrogen-ready system would replace a gas-fired boiler that has come to the end of its life.

It is now well known that Worcester Bosch has been actively involved in developing hydrogen-ready boilers.

We are excited to say that ours is undergoing field trials at a number of UK locations to determine the feasibility of introducing them to market.

Keeping the UK Safe | 05

Keeping the UK safe and warm We look back at our Safe in Your Home installer initiative and how it helped ensure the UK continued to receive heating and hot water, in a safe way.

Our intention was that homeowners and installers were reassured regarding safety considerations for an at-home visit, with a collection of digital and physical reminders putting safety front and centre.

Imagine our delight that, within less than a month, almost 5,000 installers signed up – showing their commitment and demonstrating that safety is the main focus for any boiler installation or home heating maintenance.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a number of government restrictions introduced to ensure that we, as a nation, were protected from the virus. However it wasn’t just the government who introduced new measures, many businesses introduced their own schemes and initiatives to ensure their customers and staff felt protected and safe – including us at Worcester Bosch.

Launched in June last year as a response to slightly eased lockdown restrictions, the ‘Safe in Your Home Installer Commitment’ was a pledge for heating engineers to sign up to, as our industry slowly returned to work.

This pledge ensured that homeowners across the country could feel safe when installers entered their homes to undertake new boiler installations, vital repairs and servicing.

By signing up, installers received up-to-date information, clarity on the correct social distancing and hygiene guidelines to follow and share with customers, ensuring mutual protection with every visit.

Of course, it didn’t stop there. For the remainder of 2020 and into 2021 restrictions chopped and changed causing uncertainty for many homeowners. We continued to promote Safe in Your Home to both installer and consumer audiences throughout this time.

By the time the Prime Minister announced his four-step plan to begin easing the third lockdown the UK had been in, the Safe in Your Home Installer Commitment was over 4,000 strong!

Now that the UK starts to return to normal, we’re glad to say that the necessity of Safe in Your Home has passed.

But we wanted to say thank you to those who signed up when it was needed! ■

Introducing the Greenstar 4000 – created from the DNA of the Greenstar i We’re delighted to announce the launch of our Greenstar 4000 boiler, with a host of improvements to the highly-popular Greenstar i, that it replaces this year.

While building on the tried, tested and much-loved features of its predecessor, the range has been transformed in appearance, performance and installer plus-points.

We’ve raised the bar with the speed and ease of installation, commissioning and servicing, alongside improvements in efficiency and control.

Encompassing features from our range-topping 8000 Style, informed by insights from installers and featuring real advances in siting flexibility, we’ve taken what was the nation’s favourite boiler and made it even better.

We know that many homeowners out there have a Greenstar i and when it comes to replacing it, they will want a similar boiler. That’s why we’ve designed the Greenstar 4000 with a ‘SimpleSwitch’ in mind.

Any i Junior, Si or i system boiler can be easily replaced with a 4000 thanks to the same fixing points, pipe centres and flue to valve distance. By matching its predecessor models, the 4000 can be installed with minimum time, effort or re-work.

The wall-frame also provides a pre-piping option for all seven combi pipe connections before the boiler is hung.

Ease of access We’ve not only taken the modern, sleek look and feel from the Greenstar 8000 Lifestyle range but also the practical design.

With both the front and right-hand side panels being removable, we’ve made it incredibly easy to access the internal components of the boiler.

Planet-friendly packaging With the Greenstar 4000 we’ve made a concerted effort to make its packaging as planet-friendly as possible, while ensuring product protection during delivery.

We’ve removed all polystyrene packaging and replaced it with a household recyclable honeycomb cardboard.

All plastic bags have been removed and replaced with compostable bags which can be placed in garden waste for composting, used as a food waste bin bag or disposed of in normal household waste.

To ensure that our packaging is still protective we have undergone intense transport tests to ensure it is equally as robust and secure as our old packaging.

Simplified service The Greenstar 4000 has new control features which make servicing even easier than the Greenstar i: • A range of service reminders to promote a responsible service regime and an ongoing relationship with customers.

• S ervice reminders can be set by the number of months (default is 12 months) or the number of burner operating hours. Specific dates can be selected when a Comfort+ or Comfort+ I RF is installed.

• T he boiler menus highlight the current fault complete with long-text description.

• T he last ten faults are contained in time order in the ‘Fault History’ menu.

• C omponent test function allows certain components to be activated via the ‘Activate Test’ menu, quickly diagnosing potential issues without removing the front cover. The fan, pump, diverter value, ignition transformer and the burner can be activated in this way.

• E nsure complete boiler drain-down by moving the diverter valve into mid-position via the ‘Special Function’ menu. ■

Energy and cost-conscious end users can also benefit from an innovative ‘Quick tap’ feature, by simply opening and closing the hot water tap and waiting 30 seconds for hot water to be produced – saving up to 3.5 l/min whilst doing so. That’ll certainly add up to significant reductions in waste water.

10 | A look back at the Greenstar i

A walk down memory lane Martyn Bridges, Director of Technical Communication and Product Management at Worcester Bosch, takes a look back at the history of the Greenstar i and what made it one of the best-selling boilers to date.

Grants were even offered to help sell condensing boilers. You could claim £200 back from the Energy Saving Trust to make up the cost difference between a condensing and non-condensing boiler.

However a change was required to move away from older models and convert the UK to a more efficient way of heating. In 2002/2003 it was confirmed that from the 1st of April 2005 only condensing boilers would be available for installation.

At Worcester Bosch we had about three or four years to design a range of boilers to meet this deadline.

Most condensing boilers at the time were fairly large and heavy items, which would be disruptive for homeowners as well as taking a toll on installers.

We knew it would make more sense to design something small yet efficient.

Building design in The first thing we did was design a boiler where you could pre-plumb every single pipe that was required on the wall-mounted jig – something that was rather unusual at the time. The jig was designed to screw to the wall so every pipe you needed – including the pressure relief valve, discharge pipe and the condensate discharge pipe – could be piped up.

This is still not a method used by many in the industry to this day.

It may seem crazy now, but back in 2000, condensing boilers were not really a thing. People were selling them but in very small numbers as the industry and homeowners were still used to open vent, non-condensing designs.

On top of this we had our heat exchanger from our colleagues at the wider Bosch Group across the channel. Using both the jig and heat exchanger as the starting point we designed this new, smaller boiler named the Greenstar i Junior. Our first condensing boiler and one that was in a lovely, portable size!

From launch, it rapidly gained popularity thanks to how easy it was to install. Over time, various alterations and upgrades were made to it, but the jig and heat exchanger always remained at its heart.

We only decided to drop ‘Junior’ from the name when we changed the outputs to 25kW and 30kW to reflect the changing market. But that was the most radical change over the 15 odd years the Greenstar i has been on sale, which is a testament to its popularity.

Over the years it has undoubtedly grown to be the best-selling boiler that we at Worcester Bosch have made and possibly one of the most popular condensing boilers on the UK market, with over three million homes being warmed by one!

Time for evolution However, after 15 years it’s time for the next step.

It may feel like this is goodbye to the Greenstar i.

But it’s not really.

The Greenstar 4000 series builds upon everything people love about Greenstar i with improvements to make it more accessible and attractive to installers and homeowners alike. It has a new, modern design and a high-tech control system to boot. However, that heat exchanger and pre-plumbing arrangement, which was at the heart of the Greenstar i, is still very much a part of the new range.

We all learn from our history and predecessors and this is no different. The Greenstar i will never be forgotten by us and no doubt you, and that memory lives on in the Greenstar 4000. ■

What the path to net zero will look like Martyn Bridges discusses the alternative technologies to hydrogen and heat pumps which can contribute to net zero 2050.

Preparations for net zero 2050 are well and truly underway.

Having spoken a lot about how hydrogen solutions and heat pumps will contribute to decarbonisation, it is worth turning the conversation to the alternative technologies set to play equally crucial roles.

These technologies include bio-oil -fired boilers and Heat Interface Units (HIUs). While somewhat overshadowed in conversations surrounding decarbonisation, each one can offer crucial solutions in the bid for net zero.

So, how can we use each of these technologies and how are they best situated for decarbonisation?

Oil boilers Oil boilers will not be familiar to the majority – in the UK, some 23 million homes have a gas-fired central heating system, while only 1.2-1.3 million have oil-fired heating.

They are a minority in comparison, but from an urgency perspective, targets concerning oil-fired boilers are the first BEIS have in their sights.

It is rare to see oil boilers being installed into new build properties, as it is difficult to achieve the emission ratings in such properties.

They are mostly found in the 1.2-1.3 million existing homes that are off the gas grid. These homes are mainly in remote areas where gas is not available and in old properties or even listed ones which are difficult to insulate or renovate.

To substitute oil with anything other than oil is a tough challenge.

The government is currently hoping that heat pumps will be the technology to save the day here – in fact, a new scheme will come into operation on 1st April 2022, offering a £4,000 upfront payment to consumers to swap an oil boiler for an air-to-water heat pump.

Did you know?

Oil heating systems can be decarbonised with a high blend of HVO rather than having the entire heating system swapped out for the only other alternative on the table.

Whilst the new scheme is encouraging, it is somewhat limited in detail. As many homes will need some fabric upgrades and changes made to the radiators and pipework. Consequently, the £4,000 may not make much of an inroad to the actual costs required for the change.

Alternatively, you can 'green' the oil, using an alternative such as HVO (hydrogenated vegetable oil).

OFTEC have been running a series of trials in recent months, where around 20 homes have been running on HVO. The trials are taking place with existing boiler installations and demonstrate that HVO is very much a 'drop-in fuel' that requires little or no change to the installation and the house.

We are optimistic that BEIS and the government will consider such alternatives alongside electric heating. Perhaps by greening the oil to a 100% or lower blend, while supplementing these lower blends with low emission technology such as an air-towater heat pump and solar water heating.

As such, oil heating systems can be decarbonised with a high blend of HVO rather than having the entire heating system swapped out for the only other alternative on the table.

Heat Interface Units (HIUs) HIUs look similar to boilers.

But, there is no flue or gas supply, as they take heat from a central tank or calorifier, store the heated water ready for domestic use and distribute this into the apartments or houses where they are sited.

Therefore, they are technology or fuel agnostic; it does not matter where the hot water comes from or how it gets hot.

In different schemes, the hot primary water feeding the HIUs comes from heat pumps, waste industrial heat or biomass boilers. The majority, though, are still using heated water generated from gas-fired boilers.

Consequently, they are not (and will not be) low carbon until the gas is decarbonised with perhaps hydrogen gas.

There have been some creative solutions to this, particularly in London where large amounts of high-density housing and tower blocks have their hot water tanks heated using heat from the underground tube network via a heat pump. In Wakefield, a 3,000 litre calorifier is heated by a biomass boiler to provide hot water to a social housing site of around 120 homes. Whilst the lead boiler is a biomass boiler, there is a gas-fired boiler to provide back-up in case of servicing or breakdowns.

The government has, in my opinion, a perhaps over-ambitious belief that HIUs will be used on a wide scale in such housing sites, as the disruption caused will make this difficult.

However, in tower blocks and apartments that are brand new, it makes sense to use the technology.

The investment is high, but it is worthwhile. Using heat pumps, solar thermal or even hydrogen to heat these tanks offers a great solution for these high-density housing situations.

In summary, while conversations surrounding decarbonisation tend to focus on hydrogen solutions and heat pumps, other technologies have a lot to offer on the road to net zero 2050. ■

A Q&A with the UK’s youngest ever qualified installer At the age of 16, Jack has been confirmed as the youngest UK gas safe qualified engineer ever – a huge achievement! We caught up with Jack and his (very proud) dad Darren, owner of Local Plumbers in London, to find out more…

Q Darren, when did you realise Jack was so talented at engineering? Has it always been of interest to him?

Jack just seemed to have a natural engineering mindset from a young age. For example, he used to have a talent for fixing hoovers.

Whenever one of our friends had a faulty hoover, he’d go round, take them apart, then fix them up so they were as good as new!

Q How did you make the decision to take him out of school to focus on his passion of engineering?

Whenever we went to parents’ days at his school all the teachers would say ‘all he wants to be is a plumber’, every time. When the first lockdown happened I decided to speak to the school and suggest that Jack went into school one day a week to do his Maths and English, then come out with me for the rest of the time.

They agreed and after the lockdown put him forward for training in gas and everything else. The trainer even said that Jack was unbelievable in how advanced he was.

So definitely the best decision!

When I was younger,

I used to fix my dad’s lawnmower if it broke down.

Q Jack, when did you realise your skills lay in engineering rather than academics?

I didn’t really like the theory side of school, I always preferred the hands-on subjects. This comes from when I was younger and used to fix my dad’s lawnmower if it broke down. I’d have the tools out of the garage and be straight out there fixing it.

Q What would your advice be to young engineers who are looking to start their careers?

Get the equipment and find someone who knows what they’re doing. A hands-on approach to this industry and learning from someone who is experienced will always put you in good stead.

Most importantly you’ve got to stick at it through the rough and smooth.

Q Having made an amazing start to your career as an engineer already, where would you like to be in the next five years?

I would like to take over Local Plumbers and the other companies in our portfolio and expand our business a bit more.

Q Finally, last question and its one for you Darren. Jack has become the youngest ever qualified gas engineer, how does that make you feel?

It still brings tears to my eyes. It is a massive achievement and we’re all extremely proud. ■

Q: I have been told that the new 4000 boiler has a long flue length available, how does this compare with the Greenstar i boiler?

That’s correct the new 4000 boiler has much longer flue lengths available and easier deductions for the bends. Let’s compare the 100mm diameter horizontal flue lengths on the Greenstar i combi boiler against the new 4000 combi range as an example: Greenstar i combi • M ax length 4.6m horizontal • D eductions for bends: – 90 degree bend: 2.0m – 45 degree bend: 1.0m Greenstar 4000 combi • M ax length 12m horizontal • D eductions for bends: – 90 degree bend: 1.5m – 45 degree bend: 0.5m As you can see we can now go nearly three times further with smaller deductions for the bends.

This gives you much more choice on boiler location and takes away the need to upgrade to a more costly 125mm diameter flue in most cases.

Q: Is it easy to change from the Greenstar i boiler to the 4000? What if I have a Greenstar i Junior and want to upgrade to a 4000?

If you are upgrading from an older Greenstar i Junior or an Si, to a Greenstar 4000, the footprint will be the same and the wall-frame holes will line up. However there are some changes to do with the flue positioning as the Greenstar i Juniors have the expansion vessel at the back, this gives a flue distance from the wall of 189mm whereas the new Greenstar 4000 is 135mm from the wall.

This is only an issue if flueing vertically or horizontally to the side. We have a new accessory to help you in that scenario: introducing the new SimpleSwitch flue accessory, designed to allow the use of the existing flue hole.

The 100mm diameter flue adaptor overcomes the 54mm flue offset and can be used horizontally, to the left or right, and vertically to compensate for the offset to the original flue exit hole. It does mean however you need to reduce the maximum flue length by 4m. Even with this deduction you still have 8m of 100mm diameter flue left due to the new flue lengths on the Greenstar 4000.

Technical Q&A | 17 Q: I work in an area with low-pressure and flow rates. The requirements for minimum flow and pressure on the i boiler are quite high, are they any better on the new Greenstar 4000?

We have improved the hydraulic assembly on our new 4000 range of boilers to require less flow rate to activate the flow turbine for a demand and less pressure to achieve the maximum flow rate.

Let’s compare the Greenstar 30i boiler against the Greenstar 4000 (30kW) as an example: Greenstar i combi • M inimum required flow to activate DHW demand: 2.9 l/min.

• M inimum mains inlet pressure (working) for max. flow rate: 2.0 bar Greenstar 4000 combi • M inimum required flow to activate DHW demand: 1.9 l/min • M inimum mains inlet pressure (working) for max. flow rate: 1.2 bar (1.0 bar for 25kW) As you can see from the above figures, the 4000 requires less incoming mains pressure to achieve its full performance, perfect for low-pressure installations and locations.

Q: I have fitted a few Greenstar 8000 combi boilers and have used the Intelligent Filling System accessory for those who may struggle to re-pressurise the boiler, can I use the accessory on the new Greenstar 4000?

You can indeed. The accessory is fully compatible with the new Greenstar 4000 boilers. It’s a great addition for those properties where the boiler is in a tricky location or the customer doesn’t have easy access and will help reduce some call-outs for you to re-pressurise the system. And we have made some changes to the settings to make it simpler to set up and use!

These include a new manual fill option from the end user menu, which has been included so you can talk customers through a manual fill over the phone, if necessary. The system will be filled up automatically to the set target pressure, default setting 1.0 bar. We have also adjusted the settings to make it simpler to set up, you will now be able to define the number of times the system refills by the size of the property.

The options are as follows: • Small <8 radiators • Medium 8-15 radiators • Large >15 radiators

When you activate the Intelligent Filling System accessory in the menu the filling loop will look at the pressure and compare it to the target pressure. In the first seven days the auto fill will refill once every day, this helps the system deal with air in the system.

If we look at a small heating system for example the parameters are: after the first seven days the auto refill will happen once in 12 weeks for a small system; from 13 weeks onward an auto refill will occur once every six months. This is more than sufficient to look after a system with up to eight radiators.

Q: I mainly do servicing work and some repairs, is it easy to replace components inside the boiler as part of a service?

We have designed the Greenstar 4000 hydraulic block to make it easier for engineers to gain access to components that need to be changed, such as the plate heat exchanger and the pressure relief valve. The plate heat exchanger is a one screw removal and has a hinged side, so the plate is so much easier to remove and replace.

Simply remove the screw and pull the plate towards you and to the left to remove. When replacing, slide the hinged side into the right manifold, push the plate back and screw down.

We have also made the pressure relief valve more accessible and located it at the front, this will make it easier for you on both installation as well as replacement. ■
