MORTEHOE Mortehoe is a pretty village, standing proud at the top of Chapel Hill, overlooking Woolacombe and the Bristol Channel in one direction, and Lundy Island in the other.

First mentioned in the Doomsday book it was little more than a farm, however the 13th Century saw the establishment of a Parish Church and the Hamlet of Mortehoe started to develop.

The name Mortehoe comes from the Latin word meaning death, and it is certainly true that in this village’s history the name would have been apt. Perhaps best known for numerous shipwrecks and the notorious ‘Mortemen wreckers’ this now popular place has a slightly grizzlier history.

In the years when wreckers and smugglers ruled much of this coastline, the ones from Mortehoe were considered the most fearsome by sailors. It was illegal to take cargo from a shipwreck if any of the crew were alive on boat. Wreckers would lure ships onto the dangerous rocks around the coast, specifically Morte Stone, and ensure that there were ‘no survivors’ left on board, they would then strip the ship of it’s cargo.

One of Mortehoe’s most feared wreckers is believed to be that of Elizabeth Berry, she is said to have used her pitchfork to drown sailors, she was eventually arrested in 1850 and given 21 days hard labour as a punishment.

Today a much calmer Mortehoe is a popular place, with many enjoying it’s rich history and beautiful coastal walks that the area has to offer.

At the heart of the village, is St Mary Magdalene Church. A Grade 1 listed building dating back to 1170, where evidence of a stone built church has been found. Many additions have been made over time and, of particular interest to visitors are the forty eight pew ends which are carved into chestnut and demonstrate some beautiful craftsmanship and interesting subjects. They are thought to have been completed during the regin of Henry VIII. The chancel arch mosaic, designed

by Selwyn Image can be seen at the east end of the nave. It was installed in 1903 and depicts four angels and a mystic lamb all set into a back drop of gold. It was made and installed by the same artisans responsible for the mosaics in St Pauls Cathedral.

Much is made of the churches links to William de Tracey, however it is believed that it is not the same de Tracey connected with Beckets murder, but that of William de Tracey who was a Rector of Mortehoe and dates to 1322.

The museum is the perfect way to find out more about the area’s heritage.

The Mortehoe Heritage Museum is located in a Grade II listed barn owned by the National Trust.

Standing at the entrance of the upper floor is the figurine of a well-known Mortehoe resident, Eliza Yeo. Born in 1840 to Samuel and Mary Ashford she would marry John Yeo when she was just sixteen. John was reputed to be a fugitive from the law following the murder of a man with a pitchfork in a neighbouring county. The newly married couple lived in a cottage at Warcombe Farm, where they went onto have a large family of their own.

Eliza was a strong and determined character, turning her hand at anything. Many local legends and stories exsist about Eliza.

Mortehoe benefits from its location along some spectacular coastline, those who enjoy to walk, can enjoy some stunning coastal paths. A nice walk is to Bull Point Lighthouse.

The lighthouse, constructed in 1879 is on the headland and provides a lovely walk from the village. On the 18th September 1972 the lighthouse keeper reported ground movement, in the early hours of 24th September the cliff face crashed into the sea.

The lighthouse had to be closed.

In 1974 Trinity House opened Bull Point Lighthouse, which remained in operation until automaotion in 1995.

Mortehoe has a good selection of pubs and cafes to enjoy a drink and refreshments. The Chichester Arms and Ship Aground are a perfect watering hole following a long day walking along the beautiful coastal paths, whilst Miss Fea’s Café and the Town House tea rooms offer a place to enjoy a cream tea or slice of cake. For those camping, who fancy some home cooked food, Rockleigh take away offer a scrumptious menu of excellent food to take away and enjoy… they even have sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream (a personal favourite!).

T

he happy combination of sunshine and sand is found to the full at Woolacombe, one of the most popular of the smaller coast resorts of North Devon. Smaller is a relative term. Judged by population, Woolacombe is a small place, but the term is not one which would be applied to it’s three miles stretch of firm, golden sands which is the glory of Woolacombe. It is a veritable children’s paradise, and it is small wonder that those with families pay return visits year after year to a spot so beautifully blessed by nature, whilst from more populous Ilfracombe no more enjoyable day excursion is to be found than that to Mortehoe and Woolacombe Sands.

The bathing is a delight, and there is ample evidence of it’s popularity in the rows of bathing boxes sheltered beneath the range of sand dunes fringing the shore. Woolacombe has natural advantages which are the envy of much more populous resorts, and has an equable climate which is strongly recommended by the medical profession.

I

n the season the sands are as gay as the most fashionable of continental resorts, and whilst there is a feeling of being “far from the madding crowd” Woolacombe is easy of approach, being some two miles distant from Mortehoe Station on the Southern Railway-223 miles from Waterloo, with a fast train service on the Ilfracombe line, which, of course, is also served by the Great Western system.

Sheltered from the north, east, and south-east, facing due west, and overlooking the open Atlantic, Mortehoe and Woolacombe enjoy a bracing air. Woolacombe particularly has a wonderful sunshine record and low annual rainfall. There is tangible evidence of the popularity of the place in the increasing number of charming villa residences erected in late years on its high grounds overlooking the bay. Measured by population, its growth has been phenomenal. In 1881 population of Mortehoe, in which Woolacombe is included, was 430.

Ten years later it had grown to 678, and is now about 1,500. With this increase has grown up one of the finest hotels on the coast hereabouts, a quite excellent golf links, and facilities for tennis and other outdoor enjoyment.

he principal development has been on the Woolacombe side, which, however, is only about a mile distant from Mortehoe, where there is also good accommodation for the visitor. The modern development of Woolacombe is due not only to the realization of its many natural beauties, but also largely to the public spirit and generosity of the Lady of the Manor, Miss Rosalie C. Chichester, who has co-operated with the local authority in many schemes for the improvement of the place. The headland at Morte Point some 200 acres in extent, is the munificent gift of Miss Chichester to the National Trust to be kept for ever as a public place.

I

n the way of communication Woolacombe is better served than formerly, and passengers may book direct from Paddington or Waterloo to Woolacombe, the motor service, which is a great boon, connecting with the train at Mortehoe. Similarly, for the day excursions from the various parts of North Devon through rail and road motor tickets are issued, Mr. Simpson’s conveyances connecting with the train at Mortehoe Station. This year, too, a regular Sunday train is promised by Southern Railway between Ilfracombe and London and vice versa, which, except for the purely summer service, will be the first regular Sunday trains in and out of North Devon since 1914.

Woolacombe and Mortehoe will benefit in these additional services as in the accelerated service which will permit of the traveller leaving Woolacombe in the morning and reaching London in time for lunch, an improvement, which has been pressed for for a considerable time, and the granting of which was announced

by Mr. Edwin C. Cos, speaking at a dinner of Ilfracombe Chamber of Trade last week. Woolacombe has also greatly developed as a centre from which road motor excursions can be made.

A

fine, broad promenade adjoins a beautiful marine drive which has been considerably extended and improved of late years, and the whole is flanked on a high ground with villa residences in most tasteful architectural design. The visitor is immediately struck with the feeling that Woolacombe is “select” and it’s beauties are natural.

There is nothing of the Margate or Blackpool about the sands. They are just as Nature intended them to be, in the season enjoyed by care-free holidays seekers who can take their pleasures in bathing, tennis, golf, or promenading with no need for the minstrel troupe and the noisy accompaniments of the crowded and so called “popular” resorts.

Tennis & Golf

T

he amenities required by the visitor are all in the centre of Woolacombe. There is the principal hotel in its own extensive grounds, the golf links, tennis courts, and a putting green. The shopping centre, small, but well equipped, is also here, only a few minutes from the 18 holes golf course. The latter is one of the principal attractions to the average visitor, and the secretary, Mr. T. S. Watkinson, informs us that the course is in excellent condition. Golf was popular at Woolacombe twenty years ago, and the present excellent links have developed from the old nineholes course.

There are some very sporting holes, and the links generally are a fine asset. With the combination of good golf, the finest bathing, facilities for tennis, delightful walks, charming scenery, and invigorating sea breezes.

Though in the summer in the months the sea here is generally calm, it can in winter, be very rough indeed.

Some thing of this must have been in Kingsley’s mind when he penned his picture of Morte: “What a chaos of rock ridges! Old starved Mother Earth’s bare-worn joints peeping out through every field and down; and on three sides of us the sullen thunder of the unseen surge.”

The Morte Stone, the “Death Rock” as the Normans christened it of old, does not belie its name even now.

See how often in this calm it hurls up its column of spray at every wave; and then conceive being entrapped between it and the cliffs on some blustering, whirling winter’s night, when the land is shrouded thick in clouds, and the roar of the breakers hardly precedes by a minute the crash of your bows against the rocks.

Woolacombe offers all that is needed for the seeker after a healthy holiday.

The water supply comes direct from Exmoor, from the same source, as a matter of fact, as Ilfracombe’s supply.

T

he walks in the neighbourhood either of Mortehoe or Woolacombe are delightful. Lee is very popular and lies in the combe known as the fuchsia valley. The village is somewhere about midway between Mortehoe and Ilfracombe and equally popular with visitors from both places. Another popular objective is Bull Point Lighthouse, which warns mariners of the proximity of the Morte Stone.

Day trips from Ilfracombe have always been popular, this one was taken in 1909.

ON A DAY IN SUMMER What a different picture on a summer day, when the waves gently lap the cliffs and shelving beaches, the sea, almost a Mediterranean blue, reflecting the tiny fishing boats, which come out from Ilfracombe or the pleasure steamers as they cruise down the Channel, their passengers lost in admiration at the rugged beauty of the cliffs topped with verdue!

Taking the walk from Woolacombe in the other direction towards Baggy Point and Saunton, the sand dunes slope down to the shore and the view is generally more pastoral. The other side of Baggy is Croyde Bay and Saunton, the latter also famed for its sands and golf course. Time may come when a marine drive will connect the two, which will be one of the finest in England.

T

o meet Woolacombe’s expansion a new church, that of St. Sabinus, was erected some four years before at a cost of £6,000, on land given by Miss Chichester. It is a very beautiful modern building, and quite an ornament to the place.

St.Sabinsus came from Ireland to preach Christianity, and according to tradition the vessel in which he sailed was wrecked at Wooalcombe.

The mother church of the parish is that at Mortehoe, and in this will be found much that is of interest to the visitor. An ancient, weather- beaten structure, the fabric has at various times been restored, but the oldest portions are probably 12th century.

Of the peal of bells, recently recast, on by Robert Norton, of Exeter, dating from about 1430, is regarded as among the oldest in Devon. The chief object of interest to the visitor is the tomb of Sir William de Tracey, about which there has been a good deal of controversy. Popularly the tomb is supposed to be that of one of the murderers of Thomas Becket, but judging by the number of tombs to which this description is applied.

Thomas Becket’s assassins must have numbered a good army. It is regarded as more likely the tomb is that of a Tracey who was rector of Mortehoe and died there some 150 years later than Beckets assassin. Still the legend remains, and for his crime Tracey was supposed to have been allotted the impossible task of weaving ropes of sand on Woolacombe Beach. Tracy, of course, is a name not uncommon in Devon.

Cream Tea How to make it Devon!

Crumbly scones, sticky fruit jam, lashings of clotted cream and perfectly brewed tea. It’s a heavenly combination, but where did it all begin?

D

evon is known for it’s traditional Devon Cream tea, and you will find it difficult to find a local café or tea rooms that does not serve this scrumptious delight either on its own or as part of an afternoon tea.

Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches (including of course thinly sliced cucumber sandwiches), scones served with clotted cream and preserves.

Cakes and pastries are also served.

Britain’s love affair with tea began in 1662 when Portuguese Catherine de Braganza married Charles II, she bought with her the tradition of drinking tea. It would be in 1706 when Thomas Twinning opened his first tea rooms in London that the trend became popular and we soon saw a flurry of tea rooms opening across the city.

H

owever the tradition of afternoon tea as we know it today, did not become popular until the mid 19th Century. The 7th Duchess of Bedford, Anna Russell, is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. The day was organised around two main meals, those being breakfast and a late evening dinner. The Duchess decided that a pot of tea and a light snack that she would take in the afternoon would fill the gap between these meals.

O

ver time the Duchess invited other people to take part in this ‘tea’. It wasn’t long before other people were copying the Duchess and as more and more people did this it moved to the prestigious ‘ drawing room’ of fashionable houses rather than the private quarters of the house which is where the Duchess had taken this afternoon snack. It wasn’t long before it became an afternoon tradition. This pause for tea became part of the traditional daily routine, with ladies changing into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which would usually be served in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.

Cream teas are often known as either being a Devon or Cornish cream tea, however how these are served is a debate that continues with many people disagreeing. Dr Eugenia Cheng, a mathematics lecturer from Sheffield even joined the debate in May 2013, after being contacted by a clotted cream company. Her paper examined the different sizes of scones and thickness of cream required to get a good taste and better balance.

Devon Cream Tea Traditionally a Devon cream tea is a freshly baked, warm scone that should be split into two halves, covering each with clotted cream and adding strawberry jam on the top. In 2010 a campaign was launched to have a Devon Cream tea protected by the ‘protected designation of origin rules” outlined by the European Union.

Cornish Cream Tea Cornish teas, consist of the same ingredients but the jam is applied before the cream, and in some cases butter is added to the scone first.

A Cornish tea is believed to have been a slightly sweet roll, rather than a scone but few places now serve these

Make your own scones Ingredients 225g / 9oz plain flour 4 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 50g / 2oz butter 25g / 1oz caster sugar 150ml milk 1 medium egg Preheat oven to 450°F / 230°C / gas 8 and lightly grease a baking tray.

Sift flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl and rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Stir in the sugar. Add all the milk and mix lightly into a soft dough.

Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead briefly.

Do not overwork the dough or your scones will be tough!

Roll the dough out to 1.25cm / 1/2 in thickness and cut out rounds.

Place on the greased baking tray.

Brush the tops with beaten egg and bake for 7-10 minutes or until well risen and golden brown.

Cool on a wire rack.

Woolacombe My past, present and future

I

’m not alone in my infatuation and fascination with Woolacombe, after all you wouldn’t be reading this if you didn’t feel the same. It’s a very special place to many and there are hundreds of reasons why.

“For me it has been part of the story of my life and has brought good but also bittersweet memories for me.”

As a child Woolacombe was the number one destination for our family. With a dog usually in tow my parents rented a cottage and we children spent all of our pocket money in the then Pleasurelawns and also ‘Once Upon A Time’ - renamed ‘Piggyland’ by my siblings and me. I find it sad that houses now stand on that old station land.

Although I remember many rainy days spent indoors (well this is the British summer time we’re talking about here!), my main memory of those holidays was having so much fun on the beach and ‘surfing’ in literally one inch of water! We thought we were so cool modelling our wetsuits and pretending we were ‘Beach Boys’!

Fast forward approximately ten years and back to Woolacombe I drove, this time with my new boyfriend.

We had a lovely time down there, with new memories created and others revisited - like cycling the Tarka Trail to Instow. We couldn’t get enough of the place and got engaged on the beach a few years later, visited during two pregnancies (I wanted to make sure my babies had the fresh sea air!) and took our eldest there for his first holiday. Unfortunately my marriage didn’t last but those memories will last forever and Woolacombe was a big part of our time together.

A

s a way to start over again and ensure old memories didn’t stop me from going back I visited Woolacombe again last year with both my children and they absolutely loved it. The pure joy on their faces as they sat/ran/ splashed on the beach is something that brings me a lot of happiness. That look of freedom and excitement is not replicated anywhere else. My eldest often talks about Woolacombe, asking when we can go back and to hear him talk about it with such enthusiasm is wonderful! To give them a special place to go, to make memories for them and any future families they have, to put smiles on their faces - it’s what family holidays are all about. On a sunny day I can’t think of anywhere better.

“There’s something really special about Woolacombe. I can’t put my finger on what that is, but I guess I’ll have to keep going back until I can!”

Ilfracombe Art Trail 2017 The weekend of Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th of May is definitely one to put in your diary. Between the hours of 10.30am-6.00pm each day, Ilfracombe will once again open its doors and offer visitors a warm welcome to Ilfracombe Art Trail 2017.

Now in its third year, Ilfracombe Art Trail has gone from strength to strength and this year is proving to be no exception. Along with new work from local artists and craft makers, the Trail will also feature artists from surrounding districts and further afield.

Art Trailers will be able to pick up a map from various locations, including Tourist Information, Portland Art Gallery in Portland Street and Juul @ Home in the High Street, amongst others. They will be able to meet artists in their own homes/studios, galleries, cafes, and hotels where their artisan creations will be on display. Not only this, but visitors will be able to learn about the process involved in producing the work, together with being offered the wonderful opportunity to purchase directly from the artist at affordable prices.

By holding the Art Trail in May enables all attending to take advantage of Ilfracombe’s beautiful town, its breath-taking views and the delightful parks and gardens it has to offer. With cafes, restaurants and pubs galore, there are plenty of places to sit and recharge.

All parked up and we skipped to the beach like two excited school kids who had never seen such a magnificent sandy beach. Had some beach life photography time then off for a hearty Sunday lunch at the The Red Barn , delicious!

But to work off such a hearty lunch a walk around to the superb Barricane and Combesgate Beaches were the order of the day for more photos and then back to Woolacombe beach to take some more photos of the stunning vista of the waves, reflective sands and beautiful headland that makes Woolacombe so special. cover photo: by Tony Twyman

The People Behind the Names The Harris Brothers

rivate James Harris and his brother, Sapper Ulysses Marfleet Harris, were from Mortehoe and both lost their lives in the First World War. William Bale Harris was born in 1873 and married Emma Marfleet Karslake twenty years later in 1893, the couple would start their family life in Mortehoe. Their first child, Ulysses Marfleet was born in 1894, the couple would go on to have a further 6 children.

H

ead of the house, William B. Harris was a grocer, by trade and was described in Alan Bidgood’s ‘Woolacombe at War’ book as “a man of striking appearance who owned Harris’s grocer’s shop. He was always attired in a triangular white apron and with his bushy hair and a glorious while walrus moustache completing the picture. I can still envisage Mr Harris standing behind the counter wringing his hands as he exchanged pleasantries with each customer crossing the threshold” William Bale Harris was a well known member of the local community, and in later life he would be the superintendent of Mortehoe Methodist Sunday School. When he died in April 1941 the local newspaper reported his death which stated that he “was a native of the parish, and for many years he had been proprieter of a grocery store. He held many offices in connection with Mortehoe Methodist Church, and was well known in the district as a local preacher. He was also associated with various parochial activities.”

Ulysses & James Harris Mortehoe Brothers Ulysses their eldest son was born in 1894. Ulysses signed up for active service as war was declared, he would train at the Curragh Camp, Ireland. At the time of his enlistment his records describe him as being, 5ft, 6inches tall with blue eyes and brown hair. He left for active service on the 4th July 1915 and participated in the historic landing at Suvla Bay in August. He served in the Gallipoli Peninsula for four months and afterwards went to Salonika. He was in the Serbian fighting and took part in the Serbian retreat early in December.

ames Harris, worked with his father in the grocery trade and before the outbreak of war he was working in Bristol. As war was announced he enlisted with the Gloucester regiment and had been in France for nearly two years before being transferred to the entrenching battalion. James had been wounded twice, firstly when taking part in the first Somme battle and then before Cambrai.

On Thursday 11th April 1918, the family learnt of the tragedy of losing their second son James. In In 1916, the family received a letter the course of a letter conveying from the Sergeant informing them that the sad news to his parents, the on the 10th May, their son, Sapper section commander said “we were Harris was seriously injured through in a very hot corner at this time, an accident, but he was progressing and death came very suddently. I favourably and hopes of recovery have reason to think he suffered were entertained. Sadly the family no pain. I have lost a dear friend, received further news on the 12th as we had been together since the May informing them that Ulysses had division came to France.” died.

The accident in which Ulysses had been involved required an investigation, on the 9th May at 17:15 three trucks were heading down a line coupled together, Sapper Harris was brakesman in the first truck and sustained his injuries when the brakes of the third truck failed, forcing them to collide at high speed.

Instow Instow is a pretty village, dominated by the cluster of attractive fisherman cottages and larger houses which run along the sea front. Instow is located on the estuary where the Taw and Torridge meet, the village became popular during the Victorian period, when the area attracted tourists to it’s scenic coastal landscape, many would visit to make the most of the footpaths and beaches. The extensive views over the sea front of the boats bobbing in the water, or when the tide is out the long expanse of golden sand makes Instow a popular place. The beautiful large stretches of beach and waterside setting provide fantastic views towards Appledore which can be seen across the water.

A ferry service has run between Instow and Appledore for many years; however it was from 1850 when the railway came to Instow, that the ferry became an essential means of transport for goods and passengers. The only remains of the Torrington to Barnstaple railway is the 130 year old signal box, known to be the only grade II listed signal box which is run today by the Bideford Railway Heritage Centre and can be viewed on certain open days.

The beach at Instow is very family friendly, The shallow waters make it a great place to go padding and the flat sands are perfect for playing and building sandcastles.

For those who want to enjoy a cream tea, why not pop into the Commodore Hotel, or try some of the delicacies on offer at Johns Deli and cafĂŠ. If you are in need of a drink following a day walking along the tarka trail there are a few pub which can accommodate or cafes in the village.

HENRY WILLIAMSON TARKA THE OTTER Author of over fifty books, Henry Williamson is perhaps best known for his best selling novel, “Tarka the Otter”.

The story follows Tarka’s adventures in North Devon with particular focus on the habitat in and around the Taw and Torridge estauary.

Henry would go on to live in Skirr for four years, each day walking around the countryside and coast that he loved so much. In his broadcast he describes this time “I see myself as a very carefree, happy-go-lucky young man with a beard and an immense ambition.”

The family often holidayed in the area and in 1914 on departing from his North Devon holiday where he had been staying with his aunt in Georgeham, he said goodbye to his favourite places of Braunton Burrows and Baggy Point, vowing that he would return. Sadly he did not know at this time that war would start and he would be serving his country.

In May 1925, Henry would marry Loetitia Hibbert and his growing family would move from Skirr Cottage into a larger property, the Vale in 1926

In his later radio broadcasts, Williamson recalled how he eventually made the move from London to Georgeham after he was sacked from his job in Fleet Street; “ I took my old army pack, filled It with my favourite books and a spare pair of marching boots, and two pairs of socks and a shirt, and I took my holly stick, and walked west from London, and I walked for two hundred miles.” He fondly recalls how he saw an empty cottage in the valley of Georgeham, and on enquiring about its rent, he was given the key by the landlord. Henry named the cottage Skirr, after the noise made by the barn owls that had occupied the roof space.

In was in 1927 that Henry would write his well-known book “Tarka the Otter”. In 1928 he went on to win the Hawthordon Prize for Literature, this prize would bring him recognition and fame. He used his £100 prize money to buy a field at Oxford Cross, Georgeham that he had longed to buy for some time, the field had wonderful views over the Taw Estuary. It would be here that he would start to built his famous ‘writing hut’. Henry took its construction very seriously planning every detail, Henry is believed to have spent many hours in this hut writing over the years.

Tarka the Otter was made into a film in 1977. It is said that as the film crew were actually filming the death scene of Tarka, Williamson himself passed away. His funeral took place in Georgeham Church, where he would be buried in the churchyard.

BAGGY POINT WALK

An easy and enjoyable walk, excellent for bird watching and seeing the well-known local seals.

This easy access walk, features some fantastic coastal scenes around the National Trust’s Baggy Point. Enjoy panoramic views over Woolacombe and Morte Point.

Wildlife is in abundance at Baggy Point, breeding birds include Herring Gull, Fulmar, Shag, Kestrel, Meadow and Rock Pippits, Skylark, Stonechat and Dartford Warblers.

Grey seals, also known as ‘Atlantic Seals’ are often seen off this stretch of coastline. You may also be lucky enough to see Harbour Porpoise or Dolphins.

Leave the National Trust car park in Croyde and turn right at the little kiosk, following the sign “Baggy Point, 1 mile”. You will reach a gate at the end of the road.

Follow the path until you reach the headland, Baggy Point is known for its wild flowers and this is an excellent area to see them.

Continue through the gate to the sign post at the fork in the path, follow the path past the houses.

The path will curve slightly, where you will see three steps and a pond which has been restored as a wildlife habitat. It is passed here that you will the memorial stone for Henry Williamson.

Keep to the left until you reach another farm, here you will see the whale bones on the right hand side.

These are the remains of a whale that washed up at Croyde Beach in 1915.

Henry Williamson loved Baggy Point with it’s rich and diverse landscape, he found that it was a place of wonder and inspiration. He would write about the wild flowers, the ravens and sea birds whilst he was here. In one of his books he refers to the headland as “Tigers Teeth”. In 1996 the National Trust gave the Henry Williamson Society permission to erect a sign at the entrance gateway to the point.

In 1943, during the second world war a number of dummy pill boxes were constructed as part of the US training excerise for the D-Day landings at Normandy and can be seen around Baggy Point and North Devon coastline.

The position of the pillboxes at Baggy Pointsuggest that they were used as flame-thrower targets.

Retrace your steps back to the main car park. After all that walking its the perfect time to enjoy a nice drink and light refreshment in the Sandleigh tea rooms.

Before reaching the Baggy Point carpark you may wish to spend some time in the pretty thatch cottage lined village of Croyde.

They offer beautiful cakes, drinks, lunches and of course the famous Devon Cream Tea. They have a tearoom and a stunning garden that is divided into allotments, they also have a gorgeous shop ‘the oyster catcher’ with plenty of gifts and treats for the home.

With superb sandy beaches and spectacular scenery. The unspoilt village is steeped in old-world charm with great input into the area by the young surfing community, tourism and walkers with three fantastic beaches to The National Trust recently celebrated 75 years of caring for Baggy Point. Much of Baggy Point headland was once owned

by Edwin Hyde and his two sisters Connie and Florence, who lived at Baggy House. After the two sisters died they left the land to the Trust.

Since May 4, 1939 the site has been carefully managed to balance its abundant wildlife with the needs of thousands of visitors.

A SEA VIEW

ifteen years ago, I was struggling F to finish my second novel – second novels are notoriously difficult to write – when a friend invited me to come and stay with her for a few days at her flat overlooking the sea in Woolacombe. I took her up on her offer, made arrangements for the children, and drove down the M5 from the Midlands. As soon as I turned the corner on the road down into the village and saw that expanse of blue sea in front of me, my heart lifted and I knew I had done the right thing.

I sat at a tiny table by a window and wrote non-stop for three days, at the end of which I typed the glorious words ‘The End’. The spectacular view, the sea air, the sound of the crashing waves had put me into a perfect state of mind: a combination of relaxation and inspiration that allowed my imagination to run wild and for me to be able to capture the stories that filled my mind.

I was so enchanted that within a couple of years we moved down to Woolacombe as a family. I had my own sea view: a view that was never the same from one minute to the next.

And it proved to be the inspiration for my fourth novel, Love on the Rocks – the story of a couple who give up their hectic lives to renovate a rundown hotel in Mariscombe, a village on the North Devon coast. They have come to live the dream that so many people share – running away to the seaside – but living the dream is not always easy!

A

few years later I was renting a beach hut on Woolacombe beach when it occurred to me that the row of beach huts was rather like a soap opera – the people in each hut had their own stories, their own dramas, like Coronation Street or Albert Square. I dropped a quick email to my publisher – ‘how about a novel set in a row of beach huts?’ ‘Do it now!’ came the reply.

Less than twelve months later, The Beach Hut, set in fictional Everdene, was published and was a great success. Everyone loves a beach hut, or longs to spend the summer in one. They are escapist and nostalgic, reminiscent of 99 ice-creams and buckets and spades and rock pools.

A

few years later I wrote a sequel, The Beach Hut Next Door. The beach huts were also the setting for my Quick Read, A Sea Change. Quick Reads are mini novels, six published each year by well-known authors, and are designed for less confident readers. I was thrilled to hear that A Sea Change had been enjoyed by people who had never read a book before. One woman contacted me and said ‘I didn’t know books could be like this’.

Not all my novels are set by the sea, but I know Woolacombe will always be a source of inspiration. If I’m feeling stuck and frustrated, I just grab my dog and head down to the beach to clear my mind, and by the time I get back the stories have sorted themselves out in my head.

My Woolacombe, My Mortehoe by Pam Bodimeade

M

y love affair with Woolacombe began one frosty morning in Spring 1981. My (now) husband Neale had spent many summers holidaying in Woolacombe in the 70s and had talked about it endlessly. So, as we were staying in Somerset for a week, and were in easy drive of North Devon, a trip to see what the fuss was all about seemed too good an opportunity to miss.

As we turned the corner, just past the Ossaborough turning, I was told to close my eyes. A minute later I opened them and was greeted by one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen. The sea was azure blue, edged with a frothy white shoreline breaking onto an endless golden beach. This was VERY different to the beaches I was used to as I’d holidayed on the north-east coast of England.

After a long walk listening to Neale’s tales of sand dune surfing and rock climbing we escaped the biting wind and sought refuge in a very different Red Barn to the one we visit today. It was here I had my very first cream tea while sitting in the steamed up window that perfectly framed the view beyond. I was in love!

Over the next 20 years we visited Woolacombe at least once a year, more when we could afford it. From discovering the remains of shipwrecks during walking weekends with friends, to enjoying the traditional bucket and spade holiday with our young family we experienced all the delights Woolacombe had to offer. We stayed at most of the campsites, rented cottages and had weekends in B&Bs, none of which disappointed.

T

here were summer days when it rained, so we’d hire out one of the traditional named beach huts where we would use the slope in front to create crazy ball runs to amuse our toddlers. There were many days when it was so hot our beach tents would be like greenhouses.

We’d arrive early and set up our camp on the right hand side of the beach meaning the children could explore the numerous rock pools easily and still be in sight. Rarely would we leave until we witnessed one of the beautiful sunsets. We explored Baggy and Morte Points in the quieter months and pottered around Mortehoe in the fog.

Each time we visited it became harder and harder to leave.

And then in 2001, it happened completely out of the blue.

Neale had an opportunity to relocate to North Devon. We didn’t hesitate. Our children, Tom (then 11) and Alexandra (5) were at key points in their education and the chance for them to grow up in the North Devon community with it’s clean air and laid back attitude was too good to miss. It was a now or never moment.

We watched pods of dolphins playing in the sea, got used to watching Concord fly over us 5 PM each day booming as it hit the sound barrier, and witnessed numerous rescues by the big yellow Chivenor helicopter, now sadly gone.

he biggest turning point for me was when I found a job at our local secondary school, where I still work to this day. We’re all now very much established in our community and have made many friends some of whom live in Woolacombe. 16 years later our camp on the beach is considerably smaller and our car far less loaded when we make that 15 minute drive from home to our favourite beach. We continue to find Woolacombe a very special place despite having the luxury of visiting whenever we wish. In 2008 we celebrated our silver wedding anniversary by spending a wonderful luxurious weekend at the Woolacombe Bay Hotel.

We do use other beaches in this area but we inevitably end up at Woolacombe. It is impossible to count the times we have visited our special place however the one thing that has never changed is that little leap my heart makes as we drive around that corner.

As my mobile phone pinged continuously with the farewell messages the reality of our new adventure finally hit home. I cried the entire length of the M4 and looked ridiculous wearing sunglasses under an overcast sky.

When we arrived in our new home in Braunton it still felt very strange but at least I had stopped crying. Neale knew exactly what to do, after unpacking we drove the oh so familiar road to Woolacombe. As we turned the corner my heart felt lighter and after a drink (or two) in the Red Barn it felt so much better.

That first year was both exciting and difficult, although a constant stream of visitors made life easier. We spent most days of that first hot, long summer at Woolacombe.

Out and About Below: Dartford Warbler This small, dark, long-tailed warbler is resident in the UK. Its population crashed to a few pairs in the 1960s, since when it has gradually recovered. It is still regarded as an Amber List species.

It will perch on top of a gorse stem to sing, but is often seen as a small flying shape bobbing between bushes. www.rspb.org.uk

North Devon offers an abundance of Wildlife, coastal habitats and plant life. This coastline supports many different environments , all with their own unique wildlife. The South West Coast path runs through Woolacombe and Mortehoe allowing access to the coast and everything that is has to offer.

In the Air

Most of this stretch of coastline is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The North Devon AONB covers an area of 171 Square Kilometres of coastal landscape between the Cornish Border and Exmoor National Park. With landscapes varying from wild coastal cliffs, spectacular waterfalls and rocky coves to sand dunes and beaches, wooded combes and valleys.

Lundy Island, which translates as ‘Puffin Island’ is famed for its seabirds, but perhaps more recently it has been associated with its recovery programme and the successful increase in the Manx Shearwater population, which by 2013 thousands were breeding on Lundy.

The North Devon Coast AONB is enhanced by its rich and varied wildlife and is an essential element of its natural beauty. In spring, woods full of bluebells and hedgerow primroses are spectacular but for those who care to explore further, there are numerous rare and protected species and sites.

Seabirds are in abundance along this stretch of North Devon coastline, from the Herring Gull, Fulmars and Cormorants to rare sightings of the Peregrine Falcon and Dartford Warbler which can be seen at Morte Point.

Lundy is the largest seabird breeding colony in the South West of England, with ten different species nesting on the island during the seabird breeding season. The majority of the seabirds are seasonal, only coming ashore for the breeding season from April to July, although Manx Shearwater chicks do not fledge until late August early September and a number of species like the Kittiwake & Guillemots can be seen from October onwards, feeding offshore or visiting the nesting ledges.

Best known for Grey Seals and basking sharks, this is a great place to get to see some some fantastic sealife.

On rare occasions even Ocras (killer whales) have been seen enjoying the sea.

Morte Point has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) in part for its maritime heath in which Heather, Bell Heather and Gorse are abundant.

The best way to get a flavour of some of the local sealife is rockpooling, many small species can be seen in the numerous rockpools found locally.

Barricane Beach in Woolacombe and Lee Bay are perfect places to visit.

Barricane at low tide exposes large pools and narrow filled gullies. Sea anemones are easily seen, including Dahlia and Gem anemones.

Jelly fish are also frequent visitors that can be found along the coastline, with hundreds being reported over the years washing up on Woolacombe beach, providing quite a spectacular photo opportunity.

Lundy Island is also a great environment for those wanting to enjoy wildlife, as very few people live on the island it has created the perfect habitat for animals to enjoy, from deer, wild goat and the pygmy shrew. In the summer months visitors can enjoy seeing an array of stunning butterflies.

Plants flourish along Morte Point, a specutualr display of heathland with gorse and bracken close to the cliffs .

Saunton’s three miles of golden sands has the backdrop of Braunton Burrow part of North Devon’s Biosphere Reserve, well known for its part in the D Day landings, they can now be appreciated for their natural beauty.

The Burrows support a rich diversity of plants, flowers and insects.

Lee Bay, locoated at the foot of a wooded coombe is know too many as the Fuchsia valley, during the flowering season many of the hedgerows are covered in beautiful fuchsias making this tiny village come alive in colour.

If you have walked along Morte Point, you will have seen the flock of sheep that Shepherd , David Kennard of Borough Farm looks after. Borough Farm opens its doors in the summer months for it’s sheepdog and falconry displays as well as farmyard shows however to truly appreciate this beautiful landscape, David runs a shepherd experience at Morte Point. This two hour tour is an opportunity to watch the amazing sheepdogs at work and learn more about this wonderful place.

Star Wars fans will be excited to hear that Storm Troopers and other characters from the legendary films are returning once again to The Milky Way over the Easter holidays. The May Day festivities mark the celebration of the arrival of Summer and the beginning of the new holiday season.

Enjoy a trip to Bull Point lighthouse with a local guide and hear more about the wildlife and wrecking history of this now tranquil and breathtaking coastline.

PARADE: Muster from 11.00am at The Pier car park, 11.30am Parade starts at the Pier Tavern.

Rides start at 10.30am, with the last ride at 2.45pm. Rides lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Local news As we head into Spring 2017, I am looking at ways to develop the Woolacombe & Mortehoe Voice Magazine. I started the magazine and website in 2015 and to date have self funded the magazine, printing and assoicated costs, the aim has always been to share my love of the area and all it has to offer with as many people as possible. The magazine was intended to be an online only publication, however in response to reader requests and increased demands I have had a limited print run of each issue distributed. Going forward I need to look at ways to move away from self funding and make the magazine self sufficent. I would love to hear your feedback on the future of the magazine. I am looking into advertising, if you would be interested in knowing more please get in touch. Without funding sources the magazine will return to online only publication. I hope I can continue it, as I love writing it, and I know from feedback that I have received that people enjoy it which means a lot to me.

The magazine is intended for everyone who loves Woolacombe and Mortehoe either as a place they call home, to visit on holiday. The readers are part of everything I do, and I value your thoughts, feedback and input.

Big Breakfasts have been popping up all over North Devon, giving you the chance to enjoy the most important meal of the day with family, friends, neighbours or colleagues, whilst also raising vital funds for your local hospice. The money raised through Big Breakfast, which is generously sponsored by Phillip Dennis Foodservice, will help North Devon Hospice care for local people who are suffering from the impact of cancer and other lifelimiting illnesses. All hospice services are provided completely free of charge, but it costs £4million each year to care in this way.

This is only possible thanks to the ongoing support of the local people of North Devon so by attending your local Big Breakfast event, you will be helping us support people in your own community.

New Year’s day saw many people take to the Woolacombe beach in the traditional New Year’s Day dip. Plenty of hardy swimmers headed into the ocean for this annual event…. I have to say I was not one of them!
