WOOLACOMBE LIFEGUARDS BY RUTH COOPER

T

he Woolacombe lifeguards are as iconic a part of Woolacombe as the row of colourful beach huts on the golden sands or the blue hut cafe on Barricane beach. They are integral to the enjoyment of our days out on the beach and in the sea, enabling us to enjoy ourselves safely.

Being an RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) lifeguard is, on the surface at least, an enviable vocation so I thought it would be lovely to get to know them better and find out more about them and what they do.

On a sunny Thursday morning in June I went to meet senior lifeguard Kai in the lifeguard hut on Woolacombe Beach. It was 10am and people were just starting to filter onto the sand, setting up for a day on the beach.

The sea was already entertaining a growing number of surfers and body boarders and it was clear it was going to be a lovely day.

K

ai Drake, 42 and father of 3, has been a lifeguard on Woolacombe beach for the last 7 years (3 of these as senior lifeguard). It was his love and passion for working with people and in the outdoors which eventually led him to working as a lifeguard for the RNLI.

Although Kai has always worked outdoors and could never see himself doing anything else, he hadn’t always wanted to be a lifeguard. About 8 years ago when looking for a career change, he aspired to work with disadvantaged inner-city children, bringing them to the coast and doing sports.

To aid the process he completed a beach lifeguard qualification and a surf lifesaving course – these were a requirement of what he wanted to do.

During his research he came across an RNLI lifeguard position and applied; his recently gained qualifications certainly helped him along.

The process to becoming an RNLI beach lifeguard isn’t for the fainthearted, it requires amongst other things, a number of qualifications, an interview, a very high fitness level and continuous training. The continuous training includes activities such as rescue-board competency and ongoing fitness tests.

“We have fitness tests monthly which involve a 400m swim, 200m run, and ‘under over’ which takes place in a 25m pool where you’ve got to swim a length underwater, touch the end and then swim back front crawl”.

Kai and his team also manage to include fitness training on a daily basis too, involving runs, swims and in and out of the water. “If it is really quiet will do some water or land training up and down the beach”, explains Kai. Fitness training even spills out into their own lives. As well as surfing, Kai also runs and recently entered into the North Devon half marathon along with his colleague Ollie (who entered the full marathon).

W

ith a typical day starting around 9:30am and with an enviable one minute walk to work, as senior lifeguard, Kai starts by checking all the equipment such as the IRB (Inshore Rescue Boat) and quad bike, sets up the radios, completes any paper work, puts out the flags (there are 2 areas, black and white flags for surfing and kayaks etc. and red and yellow for swimming and body-boarding), the charity box and any important signage... then he is joined by the team and ready to go for the day.

Every day is different with the lifeguards never really knowing what to expect. Some days the beach can be at maximum capacity but the sea will be extremely calm. In these conditions not many people will experience difficulty in the water but the crew will still be kept busy with first aid on and around the beach.

Overall, Kai just hopes that he and the other lifeguards are approachable - they just want everyone to have a good time and be safe, so no question is a silly question, “if anyone is unsure - just ask us”, he told me.

U

nfortunately, there are times where people do get into difficulty and they require a rescue.

Kai told me about two recent rescues; a fisherman cut off by the tide over at Baggy Point and three kayakers and a dog stuck on the rocks at Mortepoint.

Kai explains: “The Bristol Channel has one of the biggest tidal ranges in the world and with an incoming tide, although it can look calm and easy going, in actual fact around Mortepoint it actually flows and you wouldn’t paddle against it”.

It is here the kayakers had gone out a little too far into the sea and were pulled back in by the tide. The 3 managed to get themselves on to the rocks. A call from the Coast Guard radio alerted the RNLI lifeguards that these people were in possible difficulty. “They had cuts all over their feet” Kai says, “But the dog was ok, a little Jack Russell puppy”.

Most rescues involve the use of rescue-boards and/or the IRB but sometimes they need the assistance of a helicopter. “Any major first aids emergencies like spinals or resuscitation we need a helicopter for a rapid evacuation, which is on standby if we need it”.

I

t is no secret that this stretch of the North Devon Coast is home to a multitude of sea life and Kai has been lucky enough to experience seeing some of the marine life first hand, often seeing seals swim very close to the IRB as well as porpoise and even dolphins. The crew conduct boat training and rock rescue training during the week along Mortepoint, and this gives them this great opportunity to get close to the seals habitat. “They can sneak up on you quite well. Sometimes, if you turn the engine off and it’s all quiet, a little dolphin will come past in the distance”.

To anyone wishing to be a lifeguard, Kai recommends getting fit, getting good at swimming, researching the RNLI website, and volunteering with the RNLI to get a better idea of what they do. He also recommends joining the under-16 Surf Life Saving club to gain board skills and water skills.

It is clear that Kai loves his job as an RNLI beach lifeguard in Woolacombe, “It is just a nice and fun environment to work in, with fantastic team spirit”, he explains.

“Everyone is like minded and loves going in the sea, training and keeping fit and dealing with people.

You do stuff together regularly out of work too. It’s not one of those jobs where you walk off the beach and don’t speak to anyone the next morning”.

Kai has lived in Woolacombe for the last four years and is married to a local, knowing many of the people that own the cafes and shops. He enjoys being able to say hello to many of them during his short walk to the beach. “It’s just a really nice community” he says.

I

enjoyed my visit to the Lifeguard Hut to meet Kai and the other lifeguards. It has affirmed my thoughts about Woolacombe; it is an incredible place to be.

The people I have met are so passionate about it and it seems to hold a special place in the heart of many.

RNLI Lifeguards do an amazing job up and down the country. Here in Woolacombe the ones I met are also friendly, approachable and they all seem to just love where they are and what they do! I am now off to sit on the beach and play some games with my young family, and be one of the very people the RNLI Lifeguards are looking after today.

have been taking photos around North Devon for a number of years so have got to know many of the features and seasonal variations.

Whether it’s the sun setting over Baggy Point in the winter and Morte Point in the summer, the tide variations between seasons or the different flowers that grow during the year. This knowledge of the area can help in knowing where and when to go to get some great pictures.

The other thing to take into consideration is whether I can take my little Westie dog, Poppy out with me. She often makes a perfect little subject and loves the experience of being out and about around the North Devon coastline.

The map opposite highlights the many locations around Woolacombe and Mortehoe where I have taken all photographs in 2016. I have covered most of the area, but clearly need to get over to Baggy Point and Bull Point!

It was taken in October when the sun is setting more towards Baggy Point. From this position, Poppy and I were able to admire the clear view for miles around and all the way over to Hartland Point.

Berrynarbor The Manor House Remains of the 14th Century Manor House which was partially rebuilt in Victorian times now forms the village hall. The two storey building forms part of the original Manor House, and has features from the tudor and late medival periods. The main hall was built in 1914.

Nestled on the slopes of the beautiful Sterridge Valley is the small village of Berrynarbor. Overlooking Combe Martin Cove, 3 miles east of Ilfracombe. Berrynarbor was originally called Bury and afterwards Bury Nerbert, from the family who held it some centuries ago. The Berrie family were lords of the manor of ‘Berrie Nerbet’ in the 17th Century.

The manor later came into possession of the Bassett family who in the 19th century built Watermouth Castle.

Watermouth Castle (above) was built in 1825 by Arthur Davie Basset for his bride. The Castle is believed to have employed around 40 domestics to run this Victorian estate.

In 1916 the Castle became a convalescent home for army officers in World War 1, and again in World War 2 it was used as the HQ for ‘P.L.U.T.O’ (Pipe Line Under The Ocean).

When the last descendent of the Basset family moved in 1945 the castle had various owners before it was bought in 1977 by Richard Haires and became the family attraction we see today.

Berrynarbor was a favourite holiday destination of the author and painter Beatrix Potter, who visited the village over a number of years and worshipped in St. Peter’s church. The village is proud to have won the ‘ best kept village’ and ‘Devon in Bloom’ competitions on many occasions.

The village itself is dominated by traditional thatched buildings, St Peter’s Church, and the 15th century manor house, as well as having a local pub and postoffice. The white painted homes and the villagers have a sense of humour with many of the buildings having locally crafted flowerpot men hiding in their gardens or been seen climbing up the building frontages.

Ye Olde Globe The Ye Olde Globe is a traditional character pub. It first became a pub in 1675, having been converted from a row of three cottages. Today the child friendly pub offers a warm welcome to visitors of the village.

Berrynarbor Community Shop In 2005 Berrynarbor faced the propect of losing their village shop and post office following the retirement of the current postmaster. As a central point to the village, people did not want to lose this facility, and decided to take action, forming a co-operative in order to save the shop. The store has gone from strength to strength, being staffed by a team of 30 volunteers.

St Peters Church The church dates back to the 12th century, with additions being made in the 13th and 15th centuries. The size of the original church indicates that the area had relative wealth and a large population and additions show that it was restored in Victorian times.

The building contains some ancient monuments of the Berry family. In the aisle is a beautiful modern memorial to several members of the Bassett family; and in the chancel is a marble tablet to the Rev, S. F. Gully MA, a former rector who died in 1860.

Art Exhibition

by Woolacombe School As part of the Centenary celebrations for Woolacombe school, on Tuesday 21st June, we held an exhibition of children’s art work at Woolacombe village hall.

All 7 classes produced superbly colourful and varied art work, on themes connected with our community and our coastline.

Parents and other visitors from our community commented on the high level of creativity, and the children were thrilled to see their art work so prominently displayed and so highly appreciated. Parents were invited to ‘buy’ their child’s work, which was also very exciting for the children.

Alongside the exhibition we ran a competition for the children to work on at home, and we had 57 entries from across the school. Ranging from simple pencil drawings and paintings to large scale models of our beach, mobiles, collage and driftwood sculpture, all reflecting our community and our centenary in some way.

I read somewhere that the job of an artist is “to show people what they don’t see.”

This little school in my village by the sea has a fantastic art department with teachers that put a lot of time, love and passion into encouraging the children into the world of making and enjoying art. The variety and wealth of techniques and mediums used really impressed me.

Just before half term we also worked on a large scale collaborative mosaic to celebrate our special birthday.

Children and parents worked in small groups throughout the week with local artist and art teacher Clare Russell to create a large colourful mosaic, which is now prominently displayed in the school grounds.....hopefully it will still be there in another 100 years !!

The Longstaff Family and Twitchen House

D

r George Blundell Longstaff was born in 1849, his obituary in 1921 summed up his personality as “the late George Blundell Longstaff the scientific, the artistic, and the practical temperaments were so nicely blended that it would be impossible to say which of these qualities preponderated in his attractive and versatile nature.�

T

witchen House is best known today as forming part of the Twitchen Holiday Park in Mortehoe.

Throughout the 1860s and 70s, Twitchen House fell into disrepair, and it was little but a ruin by the time a wealthy Londoner, by the name of Doctor George Blundell Longstaff, purchased Twitchen Manor. The Manor included the big house, cottages, farms and a substantial acreage of land.

Born at Wandsworth in 1849, he persued an education in Natural Sciences, it was while an undergraduate at Oxford that he had a deplorable accident, losing the sight of an eye. Throughout his life the condition of his sight was such as to necessitate the greatest care in the use of his remaining eye; he faced his misfortune with admirable courage, and engaged with vigour and energy in all the pursuits of a kindred nature.

After taking his degree in Arts, he entered at St. Thomas’s Hospital, and having passed through his career as a medical student with distinction, he graduated and eventually gained the Fellowship, of the Royal College of Physicians.

In 1875 he married a daughter of Edward Dixon, of Southampton, on settling down with his wife and young family, first at Wandsworth and afterwards on Putney Heath, he devoted himself to the study of preventive medicine and vital statistics, paying special attention to all such matters as might benefit the conditions of life among the poorer and less fortunate members of the community.

H

e acquired the beautiful estate at Mortehoe, in North Devon, where much of his subsequent life was passed, and where he threw himself with characteristic energy into the study of the history, antiquities, natural productions, and social conditions of that part of the county.

It had always been his desire to travel; and he soon found opportunity to acquaint himself with many remote parts of the earth. The results of these labours in the field of natural history were published by him in several important memoirs.

O

n October 8th 1941 Colonel Longstaff sold to William and Frederick Sanders Auctioneers, of Barnstaple, 960 acres of land, including farms, houses and cottages in Mortehoe and Lee, for the sum of £19,500, of which Twitchen House and 77 acres formed part of.

T

he 1891 census showed that Dr Longstaff was living at Twitchen House, with 10 live in servants. There were two cottages in the grounds, one known as Twitchen cottage occupied by the gardener, and another known as Coachman’s Cottage.

Doctor Longstaff lavished money on the house and it was rebuilt and enlarged to its present size. Selwyn Image, one time Professor at Oxford, was called in to design many stained glass windows, which still remain today. The finest wood craftsmen were brought into the village to panel the imposing front hall and many other rooms and the beauty and the perfection of their work is still a joy to behold some 120 years later.

It seems extraordinary, that during the period of time that the Doctor owned Twitchen, that, although a permanent staff of 2 maids were kept in the house, he, and his family lived in Putney and the house was only opened up and used for their summer holidays during May and June.

However a force of gardeners were permanently employed all year round and the extensive walled gardens and the many hothouses grew flowers, exotic fruits and vegetables all the year round. The vegetables, fruit and flowers were sent daily to the family in Putney! The 7 hour train service between Mortehoe station and Waterloo in London, which had opened in 1875, must have been the means of transport. A pretty expensive way of obtaining your fresh produce!

It was not until Doctor Longstaff, who had 2 sons and 2 daughters died in 1921, that his eldest son, Colonel Longstaff came with his family to live permanently in Twitchen house.

he family money had not, by then, seriously diminished.

Colonel Longstaff installed electricity with their own generator, probably one of the first houses in the area to have this luxury. The gentlemen used the engine room that housed the generating plant after dinner, if they wished to smoke, as Mrs Maria Longstaff allowed “no tobacco smoke in the house”.

This lady must have been one formidable woman, as we understand that when she, her husband and family moved into Twitchen she emptied the contents of her late father in-laws considerable wine cellar down the drain! Keeping only a small amount of brandy for medicinal purposes!

Twitchen House was declared a listed building on the 14th November 1985.

It was described as a large house, square rubble with ashlars dressings to the openings. Much of the original interior decoration and fittings intact with Morris details and de Morgan tiled grates. Geometrical patterned plaster ceilings to the principal rooms in south wing and entrance hall, where most of the features are concentrated.

In 1999 Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village bought part of this estate, and it now forms part of the Woolacombe Bay Holiday Village.

In recent years Twitchen House Holiday Park has undergone extensive reonovations and holiday makers can make the most of a wealth of facilities and accommodation available. For more information about the Holiday Park please visit:

Who’s hiding in Wool

Hi, my name is ‘Silvery leaf cutter bee’ not the snappiest name I know. I’m a bit of a loner, I like my own space and there’s plenty of that here. I bite pieces of leaves and mix them together with saliva to make my nest. I’m currently living in a hollow plant stem but am relocating soon to a nice hole in the sand I found. The variety of flowers mean I can always find nectar to drink but it would be nice to have more of them at the far end, bit too much bracken for me at the moment…... Got to go now, see you around.

Mint beetle, that’s me. Nice to meet you. You got to love living here haven’t you, I mean what’s not to like? Fresh air, sea views, delicious mint to eat (you’ve got to know where to look mind you). Me and my family don’t like it too cold and this bare sand heats up a treat, perfect for sunbathing.

You’d never find us far from the south of England but for me Woolacombe sand dunes have it all. I’ll look out for you next time you are down here and give you a wave…….

Hi! Hi! Hi! Hi! Hello! We are all Six-spot burnets and we just love chilling out on our favourite thistles, having a drink, catching up with the gossip, seeing what’s going on.

We’re actually quite special, well we think so as we are day-flying moths. We’ve been described as having a ‘lazy buzzing flight’ - how rude! We will however admit to being create fussy as we like to set up home in flower rich grasslands that are well managed and quite open. We don’t want them too managed though! No bowling green turf for us thank you very much!

Eek, you made me jump, but then I am a vole and very nervous. You can’t blame me as I get hunted by snakes, kestrels and weasels and there’s plenty of them living down here as well. Mind you, I’m planning to give birth to 40 children this year so plenty of us to keep the family line going. Anyway must dash, got to keep finding grass to eat otherwise I run out of energy. Let me know if you see any predators will you? Bye.

Hello, I’m Jonathan and this is my dog Obi. We come down here to stretch our legs and to see what work needs doing to improve the dunes. We’d like to clear back a lot of the overgrown vegetation at the far end, creating more space for wildlife and people as well as opening up some great views.

My Mortehoe My Woolacombe

H

ello everyone this is my story of wonderful North Devon, in particular, Woolacombe and Mortehoe.

My mother was from Combe Martin and was one of two girls born into a small cottage along with five brothers.

She met my father during World War 2 and when the war ended they made their home in Nottingham.

However, North Devon had an abundance of Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins just waiting for me. I used to relish my summer holidays from school back in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s because that was when I stayed with my Aunt. It was a wonderful place to grow up in. As a treat my cousin and I used to be taken to Woolacombe to play on the vast sandy beach and paddle in the sea and eat ice cream, proper Devon ice cream made with clotted cream, my favourite being a 99. I longed to live there, but alas it was not to be, and in those days you just didn’t relocate at the ‘drop of a hat’.

Those childhood days are now long gone but my children and grandchildren have all shared the beauty of Woolacombe and Mortehoe over the years. Even my second marriage was celebrated in the lovely Watersmeet Hotel that stands proud on the headland overlooking Combesgate beach, with Lundy Island seeming to rise from nowhere on the horizon and majestic Morte Point in the distance.

L

ast year I had a stroke, but I’m happy to say I’ve made a good recovery, and consider myself truly blessed. After I was given the all clear from my consultant to travel, my husband brought me home to Mortehoe.

At first I was very anxious about the long journey from Nottingham but I knew as soon as I breathed in that sea air and looked over to Morte Point, I’d be fine. Part of my rehabilitation was painting. It had been 15 years since I last picked up a paint brush, but I dusted off my watercolour paints and began in earnest to paint once again. I work from photographs and I’m inspired by the rugged coast of Woolacombe and Mortehoe.

“There is no other place like it on God’s earth.”

Sally & Andrew’s Special Day I’ve been visiting Woolacombe since I was 11 years old that’s going back 31 years now! We have always stayed at the same camp site - Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park.

My grandad lived in Combe Martin, so we used to spend all our school holidays in Woolacombe. I learnt to drive there and had a job in the pet shop in the village.

I met my husband, whilst we were both working abroad in Tunisia. 12 years and 2 children later, we thought it was time to finally get married. I never wanted my wedding anywhere else. It had to be Woolacombe or nowhere. I have always had visions of being on those golden sands, in my wedding dress.

0n the 1st June 2016 that dream came true. With very special thanks to the Woolacombe Bay Hotel, we were able to tie the knot. We couldn’t have asked for a better day and the weather was beautiful. I did exactly what I have always dreamed about, and was on those sands on our special day.

HOW WOOLACOMBE BECAME THE SETTING FOR THE BESTSELLING NOVEL

W

oolacombe has a special place in my heart. My parents who are now in their seventies, spent their very first holiday there by the sea in the nineteen sixties and it was an epic journey from London in those days by all accounts.

How times have changed and we, as a family who live in the West Country, have spent nearly all our summer holidays (and a few winter ones too!) in the beautiful town that we hold so dear.

I

t was while we were visiting for a week in the summer of 2015, sitting on the sand by day, strolling the town by night and wandering the coastal paths before stopping for fish and chips to be eaten al fresco, that I felt compelled to write about the magical place where the views and the sunsets rival any in the world!

Then I started to wonder, what it would feel like if I were to lose one of these things, or worse still, lose them all… My mind began to whirr, as it often does and ‘My Husband’s Wife’ was born. I placed my hand on the worn slats of the bench I was sitting on and imagined being Rosie Tipcott, coming up here for a chat to the world and a good old think during good times and bad.

M

y Husband’s Wife is a story about what it would feel like if the unthinkable were to happen. It asks the questions ‘How do you begin to recover when the person you love has a change of heart?’ and ‘How do you go on when the glue that holds your family together disintegrates and that you are powerless to stop it?’ The book explores the idea of what that loss would feel like and gives us a peek into the life of an ordinary woman who has to become extraordinary just to survive.

I was sitting alone on a bench up on the Esplanade, watching the surfers claim the last of the day as their own, bobbing about on the waves like slick, black, inquisitive seals that I reflected on the glorious day we had spent. I felt a surge of happiness, recalling the simple joy I had felt to be laughing and happy in the sunshine with those I love.

I started to think about what was important in my life and it was very simple, my family, my children, my friends; these are the things I hold dear, the things that make me happy.

The characters, Rosie and her wonderful young daughter’s are the heroines of the story, but the town of Woolacombe is also a star with the beaches, the shops, cafes and welcoming streets, as the backdrop.

I

am lucky enough to travel and work all over the world, but Woolacombe remains one of my favourite places, a place that I think about when I am far away and the place where I can walk on the beach in all weather and feel life’s stresses blow away out to sea.

Here’s a little taster of my novel, my nod to this beautiful place and the magic that lurks on its coastline…

“Having lived in the small seaside town of Woolacombe her whole life, it was hard for Rosie Tipcott to see it the way visitors saw it. Where tourists might rave about the surfing, linger for hours in the famous sand dunes or spend every afternoon on the crazy-golf course, Rosie was often preoccupied with what to make for tea, how many shifts she’d get that week or whether she’d remembered to switch off the iron.

There was of course the odd day when she would take a moment from her chores to sit on her favourite bench up on the Esplanade and look out at the big, big sea foaming against the deserted beach at Barricane. Or when her eyes were drawn to the dazzling red sunset, as beautiful as any on earth. Either could stop her in her tracks and quite take her breath away.

But what she really loved about the North Devon town was that it was home, the place where she lived in a quiet backstreet with her beloved husband and daughters.”

run the Craft gallery at Lee Bay which sells lots of local arts and crafts. The lovely old building used to be the village school and I have a little display of old photos and even two of the old school benches which children love to sit at now and do colouring or writing on the chalkboards.

Lee Bay is a perfect place to come to work every day, the village is very unspoilt and a short walk takes you down to the sea.

Previously I studied Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art and specialized in printmaking and running the craft gallery has given me the opportunity to display my own work on the walls. I also paint on glass and love to create designs on fabric too.

This September sees the annual open studio Art trek in North Devon when artists open up their workplaces for the public to come along, chat, drink tea and see where the art is made.

This year I am taking part in the Art trek and will be opening the gallery and showing printmaking techniques and encouraging visitors to have a go as well.

I

wanted to spend half of my working week , down there amongst the rocks , seaweed , sand and tide pools , sketching and painting scenes that showed Barricane in all of it’s different guises, from early morning solitude to sunset gatherings. The other half back in my studio or down at my art stall in Woolacombe.

A

s an artist you feel the need to show people something that they might not see.

In this case, I felt the desire to spend a Summer and Autumn, ensconced on Barricane Beach, a place that warms me physically and sensually.

This little cove plays centre stage to a lot of people during the year. From visitors, looking for a slice of sun, sand and sea, or foodies looking to sample the little beach cafe’s delectable Sri-Lankan Curries , shell collectors scanning the tideline or surfers looking for their daily medicine of salty sliding.

I’m Lisa and I am an illustrator from West Down, North Devon. I started Art Mash as an outlet for all my creative projects and ventures. It serves both my individual work and also collaborations with other artists enabling us to work together, share skills, exhibitions and exciting ventures.

These materials are a fantastic medium to feed my passion because they’re wonderfully tactile and react so dramatically to light. Their contrast is exciting and it feels very natural to respond to my location with materials that I physically collect from local beaches.

As an illustrator I work predominately with fused glass and driftwood.

Creative inspiration is usually a response to texture and landscape.

Art Mash’s home is a studio on a small holding in the village that I live.

Dot and I can be found there most days after our morning beach walk when I collect driftwood.

oolacombe is an amazing place to be, it’s rolling hills and dunes lead you inexplicably seaward where the wide stretch of sand gives way to the rolling sea.

The points to the north and south jut out into the ocean giving a little shelter and constantly change throughout the season from fresh spring greens, ferns unfurling and vibrant yellow gorse into sea pinks and foxgloves giving splashes of rich pink across the palette, contrasting with the clear turquoise ocean. As the bracken dies, the points turn brown and in the sunsets, glow a beautiful burnt orange. With the winter come the greys of the stormy seas, bigger swells arrive and the sheer power of the ocean is apparent.

eing an artist in Woolacombe is easy, the scenery is stunning – in any weather! and the ocean always poses a challenge …. I love trying to capture the movement of the waves, the way they lap the sand or the reflections of the sky in the shallow water.

I

There is always a new angle and with every painting I find a new technique to use…and several never to use again!

Although I have been a painter and crafter as long as I can remember, I always found it difficult to show my work but when it came to taking a giant leap of faith last year, I had to get used to it pretty quickly!

I

opened my little gallery and craft shop in Woolacombe in time for Easter 2015 and love finding new sources for stock whether it is local crafters, independent West Country makers or suppliers from all over the world.

t’s amazing how many people bring me things week after week that they have created and although I cannot take them all, it’s great to see such a range of creativity in the local area and beyond!

I

also paint and produce crafts in my studio area at the back of the shop.

I have found that people love to see the connection between the creative process and the finished product on the shelves and I am really lucky to have a platform to try out any new crafts I can think up or discover!

The support and feedback I have received has been amazing and please remember that any purchase, however small really helps to keep independent shops going and keeps our towns and villages vibrant and interesting!

The People behind the Names Frederick Howard Arnold Horsfall

F

rederick Howard Arnold Horsfall was born in Gravesend in 1891 to Frederick and Louisa Horsfall.

His father, already a sailor travelled the world as part of his career, therefore it was without question what Frederick would also do as he grew up. Frederick travelled the world with his father aboard various ships until he was seven years old, he then resided in Nova Scotia and later in Victoria, British Columbia and Canada where he became an expert sailor. When his father died he came back to England with his mother.

The family lived at Barricane House, Mortehoe, and although a connection can’t be found between them and the Conibear family who lived at Barricane at this time, it can be assumed they were either related or lodgers providing extra income. Barricane House was built by Samuel Conibear in 1860 and was first used as an inn, it then became a family home where it passed through the Conibear family.

rederick joined the Royal West Kent regiment on the 19th August 1914, and left for Australia shortly after this, where he hoped to make a home for himself and his mother. When he arrived war had just broken out and Frederick joined the 1st Division Australian Imperial Force. At the time of enlisting, Frederick’s records describe him as being 5ft, 5 inches tall, weighing 139Ibs, with a fresh complexion, hazel eyes and brown hair. He had a scare on the inner side of his left thigh, a scar on his big toe and a smaller scar at the base of the right side of his neck.

His Battalion would be amongst the first infantry unites raised for the AIF during the first world war. The battalion was raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914 and embarked just two months later. After a brief stop in Albany, Western Australia, the battalion proceeded to Egypt, arriving on the 2nd December. They took part in the ANZAC landing on 25th April 1915 where they served until the evacuation in December 1915 After the withdrawal from Gallipoli, the battalion returned to Egypt. In March 1916 they sailed for France and the Western Front.

he battalion’s first major action in France was at Pozieres in the Somme valley in July 1916, it would be here on the 23rd July, that Frederick would be killed.

Many of his friends and comrades witnessed his death, and the following witness statements were recorded: “Informant states Horsfall killed at Pozieres by small piece of shell splinter, which struck the back of his head, just below helmet.”

“This officer was killed instantly by a shot through his head, whilst engaged in ‘digging in’ after the capture of Pozieres in July.”

“About 23rd July (it was a Sunday) when we took Pozieres he was hit by shrapnel in the left shoulder, and was killed. We had to go to Australia and leave him.”

“I saw his dead body just behind the trench we had taken from the Germans at Pozieres, on 23rd July. Evidently he had been killed by a shell. There was a big gash across his shoulder and a wound in one foot. He must have been killed outright.”

“Witness states that he was shot in the head and killed instantaneously in Charge at Pozieres 23rd July. I knew Horsfall well, he was in the same company, thick set, age about 29.”

“Corporal Horsfall was on sentry duty on July 23 at Pozieres, watching for a counter attack, while the men were digging in. A casualty was wounded, and asked Horsfall to help bandage him up. He replied that it was impossible, he could not leave his post. Five minutes after he was killed by shrapnel. I saw his body lying where he fell.”

Woolacombe AONB Marathon & Half Marathon In its 7th year, the 2016 North Devon AONB marathon and half marathon took place on Sunday 26th June, involving a tough yet beautiful course, taking in North Devon’s beautiful beaches and coastal villages.

Runners take the start line in the heart of Woolacombe, before setting off on the demanding figure of eight course.

The North Devon AONB marathon raises funds for the North Devon Hospice.

Local news Marisco nightclub in Barton Road, Woolacombe, has been entertaining club goers for over 49 years, As Joey Dicker former owner of Marisco nightclub steps down he recently shared “his great anguish and a touch of heart ache” at leaving the club that his family have been running since the 1990’s.

Joey has been a key factor in attracting acts from all over the world, Joey himself started as a DJ at the Marisco before taking on a management role, his time at the club has created some fond memories of such a special place.

Tommy Deave has now taken over the baton, and has recently added a shuttle bus service from local towns for club nights, an idea which has already proved extremely popular, and has plans to expand.

As the Marisco will be celebrating its 50th year in 2017, we would love to share your memories and photographs from the previous decades for a feature in our December magazine.

Jelly Fish on Woolacombe Beach

The Oceanfest festival is the popular annual event which this year drew in crowds from far and wide. Croydes Gold Coast Oceanfest director, Warren Latham said he was ‘absolutely delighted with the event’ The 2016 festival featured new talent and music tents, it also saw the reintroduction of the day pass which proved very popular with festival goers.

Thousands of Moon Jellyfish have been washed ashore at Woolacombe Beach in June this year. 2015 had already been described as the ‘year of the jelly fish’ but 2016 is thought to surpass this. Experts said that the jellies ‘certainly looked like common jellyfish” Paul Grundy sent in these photographs of Woolacombe Beach covered in the Jellyfish.

Woolacombe 10K Run Sunday 19th June 2016 Despite the rather wet conditions on Sunday (19th June), a large number of runners turned out for the fourth ‘Woolacombe 10k Beach Run’. The course takes runners along the sands to Puttsborough, then up the hill and back along the track towards Marine Drive. The competitors then run on tracks through the dunes back to the beach and to Puttsborough again. Finally, they return along the sands to Woolacombe.

Well done to Shirley for being awarded the Community Award.

Everyone who lives and visits Woolacombe knows Shirley of ‘Shirley’s /Bowdens newsagents, in fact many people simply refer to the shop as ‘Shirley’s.

Mortehoe Museum Celebrates it’s 20th Anniversary Officially opened in June 1996

by Nick Harvey, it was called the Mortehoe Cart Linhay Heritage Centre, the building having once been Mortehoe’s Town Farm cart shed.

The museum celebrated its anniversary at St Mary’s Church Sunday service on the 26th June followed by tea and cake in the Village Hall. If you would like to find out more about the museum and events being held there, please visit: www.mortehoemuseum.org 35

The wet conditions meant that all off-road sections were heavy, however, at the finish, all runners seemed in great spirit.

Everyone completing the course was awarded our special ‘I beat the beach at Woolacombe’ medal.

First back for the men was a regular competitor, Chris Broome with an excellent time of 41:39.

Closely followed by Jamie Tinniswood and Joey Jordan. For the women, first back was Laura Farrar in 44:27 - followed by Rosemary Terrible and Beth Barrington. Full results can be found on our website.

The run was organised by the Ilfracombe Compass Rotary Club - and has raised well over £2,000 which will all be given to local good causes.
