nlike my husband, I am not a true Devonian with several generations in the local cemetery, however, I have lived in North Devon since I was 5; first in Shirwell, then Lee and Ilfracombe before finally settling on my husbands’ dairy farm in Woolacombe in 1998.

I

I have worked at Woolacombe Tourist Information Centre for 17 years – before that I was the Manager at Ilfracombe TIC, and was involved with the move from the old premises down near Capstone in to the then brand new Landmark Theatre in the mid-nineties. I left there in 1998 when my eldest son was born … when he was 18 months old, I was keen to find a part-time job and was delighted to find that Woolacombe TIC needed an information assistant. And so it began!

I remain part-time as with 3 sons and various other projects on the go, including my own holiday lets and campsite on our dairy farm life is pretty hectic! It is quite a challenge to get everything done but I am lucky to have a very small but amazing team of 2 other part-time staff – Bev has been here for years too, so is an expert in all things local and a great sales-woman, and Sue, who joined us 3 years ago has previous TIC experience and great local knowledge.

have worked part-time, year round, for the last 17 years, with one summer season off when son number 3 was born. 3 years ago, the previous Manager retired, and I successfully applied for the job.

The job itself is great … not only do we have the best view of the beach, we meet lots of (mostly!) lovely people … it is easy to spend the whole day talking about a place that you love!

here are plenty of challenges, mostly in generating income to sustain the TIC, trying to encourage local businesses to support us is difficult but many are very supportive and see the benefits of having a Tourist Information Centre, not just in helping visitors when they are here, but also to promote the area, and encourage people to choose Woolacombe & Mortehoe as their holiday destination.

Unfortunately we are often the first port of call for complaints, not that we get many, but if the parking meters are broken, the car parks are full, the bank’s closed down, or even if it’s raining, we often take the blame!

We also seem to attract lost property, including anything from phones, wallets, clothing to dogs and even people!!

O

ne aspect of my job that I love is selecting stock! Sourcing gifts, souvenirs and local crafts is great fun … shopping on a big scale … and vital for keeping the TIC sustainable.

I often wish we had more retail space as there are so many lovely things out there.

We’ve introduced lots of new services to the TIC over the past 3 years, including an All Terrain Mobility Scooter (with the National Trust), car parking permits, Charity Christmas Cards, the Woolacombe, Mortehoe and Lee Calendar (both on sale now!), the Woolacombe & Mortehoe village map, as well as setting up our partnership with the National Trust.

I have recently signed up to go on a Camps International Expedition in the Summer of 2019, to help with projects in the local community.

We like to be involved in community and fundraising events; as well as our annual Macmillan Coffee Morning (we raised £781 back in September), we also host a National Trust Easter Trail, and this year myself and local lady Sue Hill revived the Mortehoe Scarecrow Festival, raising over £1000 for local organisations.

Cambodia was once rich in wildlife but due to deforestation and hunting, the ecosystem is in real danger, I could also be involved in helping to reforest damaged parts of this landscape to encourage some of the world’s most endangered wildlife to return, as well as building homes for needy families.

he coming months will see more fund-raising events, as son number 2 has just signed up for a Camps International Expedition to Cambodia in the Summer of 2019 where he will be participating in voluntary community work … if we can raise enough money! Secondhand books are now on sale at the TIC in aid of his trip, as are some local crafts and bags of sweets.

Expedition to Cambodia with Camps International

Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Seasonal foods shortages and lack of employment opportunities leave rural young people very vulnerable to continued and increasing poverty. I hope to help develop a new classroom at a rural school to tackle overcrowding, as well as working on a teacher’s accommodation block.

I have just turned 15, but by the time I go, I will be 16 and will have just finished my GCSE’s at The Ilfracombe Academy. It seems a long way off, but over the next 18 months, I will be busy fundraising to try and raise the £3990 needed to go!

So far, I have held a Table Top Sale, and am selling second-hand books at the Tourist Information Centre where my Mum works. I have lots of ideas for fund-raising, including a sponsored bike ride, a sponsored skate, and a Roller Disco at the North Devon Arena where I work at weekends and in school holidays.

‘Byron’ continues to m

I

’m sure you can’t help but notice the fantastic progress that has been made with the Byron Apartment development here in the heart of our delightful village. Part of the new look front façade started to appear from under the mass of scaffolding back in October that had previously shrouded the building for over 12 months masking it from public view and keeping onlookers guessing as to what was to come.

I have been involved with this project since its initial conception as far back as 2008 when Blast Properties Ltd bought the old demoralised and decrepit former iconic Narracott Hotel with a grand plan to help the phoenix rise from the flames and now we can really start to see the vision unravelling. It has been with much anticipation and excitement for me as much as the residents and visitors to the village to patiently wait for many, many years to get to this point.

Many doubted it would ever happen, questions were asked about the validity of the project and rumours were rife about a lack of funding and planning resistance. The resolve of Blast has never wavered, the drive of their Directors has been resolute and determined to deliver a bright new concept, a development of its type never seen before in the village and to produce what I am sure will prove to be an iconic building in its own right for future generations to enjoy for many a year to come.

his is not just ‘another block of apartments’ it is its own social institution, a place for people to live, holiday, invest in, admire and above all a place where the local residents can be proud of and ultimately be part of as the top class new restaurant that is integral to the development will be a high quality facility for anyone to use and enjoy.

So where exactly do we stand at the moment? Huge amounts of heavy structural work has been ongoing at the rear of the development creating the foundations for the underground car park and transfer deck over which three brand new blocks will be constructed along with beautifully landscaped and stylish courtyards.

Couple that with the conversion of what was the original buildings on the Beach Road and Sandy Lane elevations, there will be five aptly named blocks making up what will now be as many as 57 apartments together with the aforementioned Brundles Restaurant, an indoor heated swimming pool, spa, sauna and gymnasium, games room and reception lounge. The site will be manned 24/7 and operate a concierge service and in-house holiday letting scheme, all designed to give the owners and their guests maximum comfort during their stay.

At present, the first six apartments are virtually ready for occupation and these six apartments comprise 3 bedroom duplex units all with stunning sea views and which sit along the Beach Road façade. I will continue to keep you updated as the works progress. In the meantime we have a stylish and furnished show home ready for interested prospective purchasers to view; this arrangement at present is strictly by appointment at Webbers Estate Agents.

Exeter Located on the River Exe, Exeter is considered to be the administrative, commercial and cultural capital of North Devon. The city of Exeter has a lot to offer, although a small city it has a rich history and plenty of visitor attractions, including the stunning cathedral and unusual underground passages that were once used to transport water under the city centre.

Exeter was once inhabited by tribal Celts called Dumonii over two centuries before the Romans arrived.

On their arrival the Roman’s took advantage of Exeter’s location, they built walls around the city and established a grid like street pattern, they also built a bath house which would be uncovered in 1970 beneath the Cathedral.

At the heart of Exeter stands the magnificent Cathedral, dating back over 900 years it is a fine example of a medival Cathedral, and is also one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture.

The building of the Cathedral was not completed until the 14th century. The site had existed since Roman times, however it was not the centre of Worship until the Saxon period.

The Cathedral has undergone many alterations and additions during its long history, it owes its well-known Gothic styling to Bishop Branscon who started rebuilding work on the cathedral in 1930, it is the only example in Europe of a decorated gothic building

Exeter’s Guildhall is said to be oldest municipal building in Britain, located in the High Street the Guildhall is a stunning example of Medival architecture, it is still used today as a working building, continuing over 600 years as a centre for civic government.

The city in medival times had a water system that went underground. The tunnels were designed to bring water from the natural springs outside the city walls into the heart of Exeter.

The passages were vaulted and it is these narrow and dark tunnels that now provide an interesting and unique visitor experience.

A number of buildings were destroyed during World War 2, however this beautiful city has still retained a large amount of its old buildings including the Georgian terraces making it a city worth visiting. www.exeter.gov.uk

Parade House

Once the home of Rosalie Chichester, Parade House has been turned into luxury self catering holiday lets, John and Briony who have a deep affinity with Woolacombe and all it has to offer, tell us more about the renovation of Parade House.

Parade House on Woolacombe’s Esplanade was built in the 1890’s for Dame Rosalie Chichester, of Arlington Court, as her summer residence.

Both John and Briony have been visiting Woolacombe for a combined 45 years. Briony has been holidaying in Woolacombe for the past 30 years of her life and introduced John when they met. Now they have a young family, they visit as much as possible.

The couple first saw Parade House back in 2013 and fell in love with the history and the possibilities to bring it back to life. Sadly at this time, the works looked to be too costly but thoughts of Parade House never left their mind. In 2015 they found themselves in the position to be able to purchase Parade House and start renovations.

They were very aware at this time, that there had been local opposition to the previous developers’ plans for Parade House.

Parade House at its height, saw up to 30 local people on site each day.

Not all went to plan during the 9 month build. As happens, the many years of fighting the elements on the windswept Esplanade had taken it’s toll on the structure of the building.

With this in mind, they were very keen to retain as many original Victorian and Georgian features as possible, whilst giving it a contemporary luxurious feel inside.

Briony and John were keen to use as many local contractors as possible in the restoration of Parade House. The main building contractor was Pearce based in Barnstaple but all of the other trades involved were also local to Woolacombe and Barnstaple.

There were uncomfortable moments when, for example, the old render was stripped off and there was just fresh air where bricks should have been!

The handiwork and skills of the whole team were inspiring to behold.

From the team at Pearce to the chap who rebuilt the original cornicing throughout, to the the local artist who painstakingly reconstructed the original terracotta feature panel added in 1890 alongside the main front door.

The results speak for themselves and John and Briony are delighted that Parade House continues to stand tall whilst the new contemporary additions merge with the background.

We hope Lady Rosalie Chichester would have approved.

It was important for John and Briony to work with the local expertises. They are very keen to start a network of businesses that work together to help increase the services on offer within Woolacombe and the surrounding areas where people help and promote each other.

Whilst carrying out the works in April 2017, the discovery of a ‘suspected unexploded device’ on the grounds of Parade House led to parts of Woolacombe being evacuated and the bomb disposal unit being called to the scene.

The rusty device, thought to be an unexploded land mine from the war was discovered by contractors working on the site.

It was of course safely dealt with.

They are also keen for Parade House to attract new visitors to Woolacombe, as it’s wonderful to have repeat visitors but an injection of new visitors, however small, will help Woolacombe grow in the future.

Already, 55% of guests had never visited Woolacombe or Devon before and all leave with fond memories.

Parade House is very much something that Briony and John wish to keep in their family and something which they hope to pass onto their young boys in the future.

My Woolacombe My Mortehoe Memories written

M

y love affair with Woolacombe and Mortehoe began 40 years ago when my Grandad moved from London to Lapford, some way down the A377. Many holidays were spent at Grandad’s and we always went to Woolacombe. My Grandad believed, or so he told us, that the Devon seas helped his collapsed arches. That is where my memories begin;

Fast forward 20 years and Grandad had passed on and my mum had retired to Ilfracombe. I was a mum of two and so the next generation began making their memories.

y childhood memories resurfaced and endless hours were spent at the beach.

Day after day was spent playing in the shallow pools left behind at the rocks by the receeding tides. We rock pooled, climbed the mountainous rocks, explored sand dunes, played on the huge skeletal remains of the dinosaur along the beach, saved buckets full of jellyfish by putting them back in the sea (75 on one go!) bodyboarded and had beach bonfires toasting marshmallows.

As a home educating family we visited term time when the beaches were quieter. I loved the atmosphere of the village and would spend any few precious moments alone mooching about or watching the surfers dreaming of moving nearby.

The feel of the place is very different outside of the chaotic holidays. There was always one house that had a wooden balcony and I would stare at it dreaming of living there so I would never miss a single sunset. It’s gone now, the balcony, not the dream!

F

ast forward another 17 years and Mum now lives in Chulmleigh so we camp near Woolacombe visiting most months. Now divorced I found the sea air and walking up and down the beach fast, talking to myself allowed me to sort things out in my head. No where else has such a positive cleansing effect on me.

I am lucky to have found the place for me to be. The kids have grown/ are growing up so it’s me time. Time to make more memories! Adult memories! I wanted fun and new, exciting adventures so I started with skim-boarding.

My short lived passion for skimboarding ended after my humiliating ‘faceplant’, where I ended up laying face down in the sand at the edge of the sea after the board I leapt on decided to immediately stop moving.

Witnessed by the entire beach it wasn’t only my knees bruised! Next up body boarding. Excellent fun and riding in on a wave felt freeing.

“After 20 years of watching surfers I spent my 40th birthday having an afternoon surf lesson at Woolacombe.”

That was the most fun I’ve had on a birthday! It is not as easy as it looks especially if you feel stupid dressed in a wetsuit attempting to stand on a board on top of a wave. But such fun!

With the kids over the years, and alone more recently, I’ve walked some of the coastal path; my favourite stretch to date being Woolacombe to Lee Bay. On occasions I’ve been lucky enough to watch seals at the north end of Morte Point.

On a surf free day this year I swam Woolacombe to Putsborough, my first proper ‘wild swim’. As Woolacombe is lucky enough to have the RNLI I spoke to them first to check there were no rip tides and all was safe to swim.

So my 40 years of memories include the hazy memories of my own childhood, the clear recent memories of my childrens’, endless sunsets, coastal paths, humiliating attempts at skim boarding and surfing, although I haven’t given up on the latter, and dealing with the world as a teenager, a 20-something, 30-something, and now, although not for much longer, 40-something!

“So what next? Are there anymore memories to be made down in one small corner of Devon?

You bet.”

Yoga in the garden in Mortehoe, swim Woolacombe to Putsborough AND back, an early morning horse ride along the beach, further along the coastal path. Further afield a tidal pool to swim, kayaking, mountain biking in Exmoor, all on Woolacombe’s doorstep.

My love affair with Woolacombe and Mortehoe and my dream to live here has not ended nor has it lessened. It has intensified. I have another 40+ years of memories to make yet. So what else can I do?

Glossy Ibis

O

riginally known, in Saxon times as Freemanton, Fremington Village stands on the estuary of the Taw, near Bideford and Barnstaple.

Hidden away from the main roads, Fremington Quay is certainly worth taking the time to visit, especially if you are looking for gorgeous views, wildlife… and perhaps even a slice of delicious cake at the Fremington Quay Café!

Fremington’s Quay was once a bustling port which exported and imported goods from around the world, at one stage it was the busiest port between Bristol and Lands End. It is better known today for it’s lovely heritage centre and as a stunning section on the Tarka Trail and South West Cost Path.

he Taw Vale Railway and Dock company was formed and in 1838, Fremington became used as a horse drawn rail link to Barnstaple, by 1891 twenty nine men were employed at the railway.

The ships would bring in coal which would be loaded onto the waiting railway trucks were they would then be exported.

A report in the local press in 1930 reported that:

The glossy ibis has a black plumage with a distinctive glossy metallic sheen.

“50,000 tons of coal and over 9,000 tons of gravel were handled at Fremington Quay in 1929” The Quay at this time was reported to be dealing with nearly 90,000 tons of sea borne traffic. In 1982 the last clay train left the station, without a railway there was no need for the ships and slowly the area fell into disrepair.

he Quay was redeveloped in 2000, with its main use being recreation and conservation. The railway line now forms part of the Tarka Trail, with the old iron railway bridge being used to cross the Fremington Pill.

The Heritage Centre, is the perfect place to learn more, located in the replica railway station and signal box, it offers visitors an interactive journey of it’s local history and shows how the area has changed over the years.

Visitors are also able to listen to stories told by the people who once lived and worked at Fremington.

Curlew The curlew is the largest European wading bird, instantly recognisable on winter estuaries

Ruff The ruff is a medium-sized wading bird. It breeds in a very few lowland sites in eastern England, and it appears that numbers are dropping.

The People Behind The Names Kenneth Vernon Dodgson K

enneth Vernon Dodgson was born in Harrow on the 25th June 1891 to Reverend Francis Vivian and Constance Mary Dodgson.

I

His father, Reverend Francis Vivian, had previously been the Chaplain to Dr Barnardo’s Home.

Kenneth was educated at King’s School Canterbury where he was a member of the Officer Training Corps, he went on to Pembroke College, Oxford where he would win his college colours for rugby and serve as a Private in the Oxford University Officer Training Corps.

Kenneth enlisted for service at the outbreak of war, in his application he expressed a preference for a commission in either the 3rd Battalion Devonshire Regiment, the 7th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment or the East Kent Regiment. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Devonshire Regiment on the 21st of August 1914 and was promoted to Lieutenant on the 5th of February 1915.

Following training in the UK he embarked for France with his battalion from Southampton on the 25th of July 1915 and disembarked at Le Havre at 7.30am the next morning.

His father, Francis, received the following telegram dated the 1st of October 1915: “Deeply regret to inform you that Lt. K.V. Dodgson 8th Devon Regt. was killed in action between 25th + 27th Sept. Lord Kitchener expresses his sympathy.”

enneth’s mother would die in 1930, she was president of the women’s British Legion and died in Surrey, her grave at Mortehoe Cemetery was lined with laurels and hydrangea blooms.

The 25th of September 1915 was the opening day of the Battle of Loos The battalion crossed and took Breslau Trench in only 12 minutes with Kenneth Dodgson being one of the few officers who made it to the objective but he was overwhelmed by chlorine gas in Breslau Trench and his body was not recovered 18

n the same year, the Rev. Vivian Dodgson offered a site in the gardens of Sunny Cliff, Mortehoe to be used as a garden for the British Legion Institute’s ex-Service men.

The offer was made on the evening of Armistice Day: “As you know Mrs. Dodgson was always interested, in the cause of ex-Service men. Our elder son, Kenneth Dodgson served and gave his life at Loos in 1915.

For his sake, Mrs. Dodgson, the late president of the Women’s Section of the British Legion always had at heart the interests of ex-Service men, and it was her delight to welcome them to Sunnycliff on the evening of Armistice Days. During her lifetime she often expressed the wish to offer a site in Sunnycliff garden for an institute, if no other site was available. I am now in the position to make this offer in the name of my family.

The Rev. Vivian Dodgson would die in 1940, his funeral taking place in Mortehoe where he had resided for several years, and where he had made many friends during his time as a preacher and speaker on behalf of Dr Barnardo’s Homes The picture opposite shows the East window of the South transept of the Church. It is a simple lancet window and probably was installed when the South Transept was built in around 1307. The glass is modern and was given in 1946 in memory of three members of the Dodgson family.

The window depicts the Virgin and Child. At the top of the window is the badge of the Royal British Legion probably connected to the people commemorated by the window.

Woolacombe Scooter Rally The South West Scooter Club, put on another great rally in Woolacombe in September.

The 18th Woolacombe Rally returned to The Golden Coast Holiday Village which was taken over by scooters for the weekend, for what is, the largest rally that the SWSC organises. A full programme of bands, shows and trade stalls were scheduled to keep everyone entertained.

Friday night saw the Britpop Indie band, Marquis Drive entertain everyone for two hours of dancing and singing!

A very popular choice, with the packed bar enjoying every minute and no doubt leaving a few sore heads on Saturday morning!

Saturday started with the trade stalls and custom show. ‘Start me up’ getting Best of Show, ‘Rattler’ taking Best Lambretta and ‘Prelude’ winning Best Vespa.

Just after midday saw the ride out to the Red Barn in Woolacombe. The ride out always provides a spectacle for those in Woolacombe and Mortehoe, with Scooters descending the beautiful Chapel Hill in Mortehoe before arriving on the Esplanade at the Red Barn. The sea front was packed with an amazing collection of scooters, whilst those at The Jube were enjoying a DJ set.

It was great to see everyone having such a great weekend, and I am already looking forward to 2018. The date has been booked for 21-24 September, so get it confirmed in the diary! See you there. www.swscooterclubs.co.uk

Mortehoe & Woolacombe Railway Station

T

he London and South Western railway line was extended from Barnstaple to Ilfracombe in July 1874, when the Mortehoe railway station was opened.

On Tuesday 9th January 1894 the station saw a fire that very nearly destroyed it. The local newspaper reported it the following day: “Yesterday the officials were able to work the signals at Mortehoe Railway Station from the signalbox which was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning. Karslake, the signalman, left the box quite safe on Saturday night. Mr Loader, the stationmaster, was also there at half past nine, and, as the fire was not discovered until nearly 5 o’clock the next morning it must have been smouldering all night. Fortunately the wind was not in the direction of the station house, or the whole block would have come down.”

ortehoe and Woolacombe Railway station in 1908 appeared in the London and South Western Railway Guides:

The railway became a busy line and the orginal single track line was doubled between 1889 and 1891.

On the northbound platform, stood the station masters house, waiting room and ticket office. There also stood a small, 20 lever, signal box and the entrance to a small goods yard. On the southbound platform stood a simple shelter.

“Although the railway does not penetrate into this delightful seaside village, the line of the London and South Western Railway, on its way to Ilfracombe, passes through Morte-Hoe, whence a descending road among the hills takes the traveller the famous Woolacombe Sands, which extend round the curve of Morte Bay for a distance of three miles, and constitute one of “the finest in the county. The little creek that runs under to the forbidding headland of Morte Point well known as shell-gathering ground, and many types of sea birds are found the numeroua of Baggy Point. This year Woolacombe will be more attractive to visitors than ever, inasmuch as it now possesses marine drive extending from one end of the sands to the other. Golfers have the use excellent 15-hole course; and during the summer months tennis and cricket”

The name of the station was known as Mortehoe until it was changed to Mortehoe & Woolacombe on the 13th May 1902, and Woolacombe was not added until the 5th June 1950.

The station was eventually closed to passengers in October 1970. The North Devon Railway company tried to reopen the line in the early 1970s but were unable to raise the asking price. The tracks were removed in 1974, following its closure the station remained derelict until the mid 1980’s when it was opened as the theme park ‘Once upon a time.’

ichael Karslake worked at the station for 40 years, prior to this he worked as a railway porter. When he moved to Mortehoe he and his family lived in the Railway Cottages, Mortehoe.

Michael would retire from the station work, after 48 years of service, 40 of which had been spent in Mortehoe “After 40 years service with the London and South Western Railway, which have been spent Morte-Hoe Station, Mr. Michael Karslake has retired, carrying with him the respect and esteem his colleagues and the public generally. Of cheerful and obliging disposition, and ever ready to help in any good cause, religious and social, Mr Karslake will much misted by the community. nce upon a time became a railway themed park, where it was enjoyed by many children until its closure in 2005, when it was put up for sale for £800,000.

Designed to be ‘fun’, it was run for a time by the same people who operate nearby Watermouth Castle.

The theme park included a number of old train coaches, and railway stock which were used to create displays and interactive attractions.

Following it’s closure in 2006 the land was approved for a housing development consisting of seven units located where the orginal platforms had been and thirty seven holiday let units. The signal box became a reception area and a shop for the holiday accommodation.

Saturday 4th November saw another great night at the Wooolacombe Fireworks Display.

Despite the earlier rain, lots of people still turned out for the Fireworks on the Field to enjoy live music, a scrumptious array of food and fantastic fireworks.

The display which started with some smaller fireworks and ended with a trio of displays from all angles of the field, wowed and impressed the crowds. Woolacombe Football Club, Woolacombe Surf Life Saving Club, the Woolacombe PTFA, Woolacombe @ Christmas and The Fireman’s Charity will all benefit from funds raised at the event.

Woolacombe Christmas Event The village Christmas Tree will be located outside the TIC with the Carol Singing taking place across the road.

Some of the shops will be open, there will be a Treasure Trail for children, Londis will be selling mulled wine and the TIC will be selling hot drinks and mince pies. More details will follow nearer the time.

Lentsherd (pronounced ‘Lanshard’) is an old Clovelly Shrove Tuesday custom, and the aim is to chase bad spirits away and drive the devil into the sea before Lent. At dusk children set off Down-a-long, dragging clattering tin cans, which are then tied together and thrown into the sea (later retrieved). Barnstaple Carnival Despite the rain, thousands of people turned out for Barnstaple’s 71st carnival on 16 September. The colourful, and fun carnival followed a route around the town centre, entertaining the crowds and collecting money for charity.

Barnstaple Fair and Carnival has been held in the town since 1931. The fair proclamation is held at the Guildhall prior to the carnival, with the fair running over 3 days, which included the carnival which attracts up to 20,000 people.

Barricane Cafe and Beach Huts tucked away for the Winter September saw the well loved Barricane cafe being taken away for it’s winter storage.

In the summer months the cafe is enjoyed by hundreds of visitors and locals alike for its traditional Sri-Lankan curries which can be enjoyed on a picnic blanket whilst watching the sunset. In the day the cafe serves light snacks and drinks.

It is also the time that for the beach hut from Woolacombe’s Esplande car to be stored and the row of beach huts from the beach.

We are all counting down the days for them to be returned!

Man ‘O’ War Jelly Fish Recently in North Devon and the surrounding areas a large number of Man O’War Jelly fish have been found on local beaches, including Woolacombe and Saunton Sands.

These jelly-fish-like animals possess a powerful sting, and should not be touched.

The Portuguese Man o’ War isn’t a jellyfish but is closely related, and consists of a floating colony of hydrozoans – several tiny marine organisms living together and behaving collectively as if one animal. A purple float, shaped a little like a Cornish pasty, is visible on the water’s surface whilst blue, tentacle-like ‘fishing polyps’ hang below; these can be tens of metres in length.

The Ilfracombe annual bike show made it’s return to Ilfracombe’s Seafront on Saturday 9th September.

Organised by the North Devon Motorcycle Action Group visitors enjoyed a number of trade stalls, food, live music and of course the opportunity to look around a lot of motorbikes of all styles and types!

Asian Hornets, which are known to prey on honey bees have been confirmed as spotted in Woolacombe.

The species which can do serious damage to bee colonies were first seen in Jersey a year ago, but more recently have been spotted in Woolacombe.

A surveillance zone around the sighting has been set up with infrared cameras and traps to find any nests.

The bees are harmless to humans.
