PASCUAL MARTÍNEZ The son of a prominent Spanish clarinetist, Pascual Martínez has fulfilled and surpassed his boyhood dreams of becoming a professional instrumentalist. As Acting Associate Principal of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, he is among his native country’s most accomplished musicians. Martínez's technical command, and the mature delicacy of his interpretations, have earned him the admiration of fellow musicians and thousands of Lincoln Center audience members. In this excerpt from an illuminating half-hour interview, he shares insights on equipment, practice and finding his way in music.

WWBW: What is the New York Philharmonic program now?

Pascual Martínez: We are doing opera actually; the first act of Wagner’s "Valkyrie." It’s an hour-and-a-half piece of music. It’s something unusual for our orchestra, but it’s great.

WWBW: And you play at Lincoln Center.

PM: It’s called David Geffen Hall now, but yes. Usually we have three or four concerts a week.

WWBW: And where do you fit the rehearsals in around all of that?

PM: In the morning. Wednesday and Thursday we have double rehearsal. We do two, and then Thursday morning is usually a dress rehearsal, and then we play the performances.

WWBW: Can you tell us about your Acting Associate Principal title with the New York Philharmonic?

PM: I’m the second clarinet player in the New York Philharmonic. That’s the audition I took and the job I wanted when I came. But right now, we have a vacancy in our section.

The Associate Principal clarinet and E♭ left the orchestra almost three years ago. Right now, I’m doing that job. So that means I’m temporarily moved to the Acting Associate Principal chair.

WWBW: Now, you mentioned that the E♭ player departed a couple of years ago. Does a vacancy typically stay open that long? Such a prestigious engagement ought to attract a wide range of great musicians.

PM: And it does. I hope when we have the audition, a lot of people come from many places and we find the best players possible. Sometimes, it takes a long time. Even two or three auditions. I hope we can find somebody quick.

WWBW: Can you describe your preference in a clarinet, given you have the option for an instrument of any material?

PM: I think it’s great that there are so many options right now with different brands and models; they all make beautiful clarinets. You have to find the one that you think is best suited to you and the one you feel more comfortable with and that’s it. If you feel comfortable, you’ll play better. I’m not saying that Tosca is the best instrument, because I have so many colleagues that play other instruments and they sound great too. So you have to really find what’s the best for you and then that’s going to be reflected in your playing.

WWBW: Some players who tour a lot and find themselves in varying humidity and temperature environments prefer the Greenline.

PM: It doesn’t change with the temperature or humidity, so it’s stable and you don’t have to worry about cracks in the wood.

It’s very safe and it sounds beautiful.

WWBW: You were an early adopter of the technology. You said it came out in 2004, and you were fond of it the very next year.

PM: I’ve always been very courageous and I like to try things.

When something new comes out, I like to try it and see if it works for me. Sometimes it doesn’t. You feel it’s not that great.

So then you know it. It’s great to try different things.

WWBW: You’re also a Vandoren endorser?

PM: Yes. I use Vandoren mouthpieces and ligatures and reeds.

WWBW: When did you get to New York?

WWBW: Which mouthpiece? Is it the M30?

PM: I saw the New York Philharmonic audition in the Union paper and I thought, "Okay, this is a good chance to play in one of the big orchestras in the world". I really prepared for that one.

I practiced and I was very focused and I made it. It was a big surprise because you never expect to win such a big job.

PM: Yes, right now I’m playing the M30D. I feel so comfortable with that mouthpiece. I’ve tried other things over the years, but I love that mouthpiece and that’s what I’m playing.

WWBW: Do you enjoy living in New York?

PM: Yes, very much. It’s a great place and I’m very happy here.

WWBW: You’re a Buffet Crampon Tosca Greenline artist?

PM: Yes, that’s the model that I play right now.

WWBW: That’s both B♭ and E♭?

PM: And A also. I liked that instrument since it first came out.

I think in 2004, or something like that. I tried it the next year and I've been playing it over the last, probably, 15 years ...

WWBW: You’ve had that relationship for a long time?

PM: Well, the first note I played on the clarinet when I was 9 years old was with Vandoren materials because my father was playing Vandoren reeds and everything. I’m so used to those reeds and mouthpieces that, for me, I think it’s impossible for me to change. Again, I know there are many, many options and many mouthpieces on the market that are great. But I just feel so attached to the sound and the feeling. It’s part of the way I play.
