A Note From the Editors -

The past year has been hard on all of us, and has created a whole new set of challenges that we are unaccustomed to dealing with. Whether it’s adjusting to online lessons, missing campus, or being stuck inside, everyone’s been dealing with something. Having been trapped inside all year, it seems that we have all lost our sense of time.

That’s why we’ve decided to go retro, and travel back in time to the 80s when things were a bit less grim. What’s for sure, is that no matter what happens in the world, there will always be a yearly edition of the Whispering Pine, making it truly, timeless.

Ironically, when the communities with whom we collaborate in and around Mussoorie needed our support more than ever before, we were restrained from reaching out to them due to the COVID 19 situation. Despite the restrictions, it has been heartwarming to see how students from Woodstock have reached out in whatever way they could to help a significant number of people to overcome some of the difficulties that they are facing during these very challenging times. Students have been genuinely concerned about the wellbeing of the members of the communities with whom they had built relationships with through the Community Engagement programme over the past few years. This concern has been expressed in many tangible ways such as the making of short videos to help young students better understand the concepts and skills which are in their academic courses, helping government aided schools to write up policies and procedures related to child protection and anti-bullying to create a safe environment for students when they do return to school, helping people to get a better understanding of the effects of the corona virus and how best they can protect themselves and others at this time. The expressions demonstrated by Community Engagement students as they have reached out to those less fortunate than themselves have brought hope and smiles to many. But most of all, it has given Woodstock students a deeper meaning to their own lives.

My life was all about Woodstock. I joined when I was in 7th grade till the middle of 11th grade. That’s a lot of time and Woodstock became my second home. I miss the strict rules,the walk up to school, the monkeys and the winter line. And of course my friends. You guys are my home, thank you for making me me. The most memorable moments all happened in Woodstock. It’ll always be my forever home.

Hey Aeturnum! Ever since I joined Woodstock in the middle of fifth grade up till now, every one of you has made such a great impact on my life. I’ve made so many memories that I’ll never forget, even some I wish I could. Singing Incarnation in the middle of the night with my friends even when they’ve never seen Nacho Libre. Ditching school for Kairos. Being the shoulder to sleep on 12 hour bud rides. Learning hindi from kids in villages while they jump over fire for fun. Doing stupid things with Annika that we both still dont know how we survived, just to make our lives interesting. Running down to make it to dorms to make it to tennis class then changing our minds and doing Maggi Master Chef. All of the small memories like these ones are the ones I hold closest to my heart. I love all of you and wish you all the best in life after graduation. Special shout out to Annika, Kundu, Chhaya, Shibo, Kyutae, Gursimar and Aliciah for sticking with me. Lots of love - Lily

ADVISOR MESSAGES

Dear Faadumo, Archita, Nupur, Shoaib, Shubh, Arhaan, Daniel, Jinju, Janvi and Jinho

I still clearly remember the first day you came to our house for the Advisor night last year. Each of you made me and Avira feel at ease as we played and joked in the livingroom. As a group, we were a bit awkward and unsure at first, but now, you all are family to us, and I am so proud of each one of you. This has been an online year, yet we have managed to stay connected and strong.

I will always remember sharing our emotions, thoughts and opinions about the (still) new DP program during our morning facetime; catching up in corridors and dining hall; visit to Little Llama Cafe and many sweet moments with each one of you. I still wish to have many more wholehearted conversations when we meet next. You will always be welcome in our home and hearts.

Don’t forget to take time to reflect and share your feelings every once in a while with each other and me. It’s good for you to relive your school years as they carry lifetime of memories! Graduation is not just an end but also a new beginning so stay inspired, be bold and pursue your passions with deep faith and patience

Well what can I say it’s been a hec of a ride! Some of you I’ve seen from when you were kids in Grades 3 and 4 grow into the wonderful people you are now. Others of you I was just getting to know before the pandemic struck and we were scattered around the world. I have such fond memories of the group! I loved sitting outside the coffee shop after we’d done the national anthem in the Quad with the Early Years on Tuesday mornings. The great fun we had during advisor nights at our home (playing the bowl game) and the cake decorating at Lotte’s café. I hope you can take the positives from your Woodstock experience and use it to be people of love, joy and humility in the world. God bless you as you go from this place!

We are writing this as the first semester ends and so our message is one mixed in the reality of now and the hope of the future, near and far. And perhaps this is appropriate; after all, that seems to be how life is lived, always--in the struggle and joy of present circumstances AND in the hope and expectation of the future.

So in the now, what else is there to say but that we are so sorry that your high school years and so many of the anticipations and celebrations have been taken from you. This is something to grieve, and we grieve with you. Who would have known that the words of the college professor from Escape Room would be so prophetic:

“You want to control your life, but life isn’t a science experiment. You can’t contain your world forever.”

There is also the memory of the first advisory night when we all screamed together to The Conjuring in a MC classroom and the memory of not-so-good ones. Through it all, we have enjoyed our time with you, from those memories to candid chats to photographs to having Christmas dinners at one of our houses to helping some of you through difficult times.

We are encouraged to see you stand up for justice and strive to become good and caring people. The resilience and positivity you have shown throughout these four years give us peace that you will be fine in life. The world will continue to move on, seeming at times as if we are caught in a dangerous, unpredictable, and ever-changing room. But look around you and find that you are not alone, that others are with you, and that your childlike HOPE has not left you. Hold on tightly to that glorious, unexplainable, natural gift of hope that somewhere deep inside, we shall continue to persevere through difficulties, create a wonderful future for ourselves and others, and grow into amazing people. Also, remember that, often, the hopes and prayers of others are enough.

And march onward, in confidence and anticipation, knowing that we have missed you, thought of you often, and have every confidence in you as life after covid, one day soon, will begin.

I can’t believe it is time for you all to graduate. Four years ago, when I met so many of you as 9th graders , I did not give much thought to the fact that one day, you would be 12th graders, and that one day , you would all graduate. And before I knew it, it is time for you to fly the nest.

I will miss your requests to get breakfast during advisor time, shared breakfasts during advisor time, advisor nights at Little Liamas, and of course learning new words during advisor time. I for one, will live “vicariously” through your achievements. I hope that your time at Woodstock is something you will revisit in your minds, a “Smultroställe”.

This is not goodbye, as I shall always be happy to hear from you; to offer an encouraging word and a bit of “advice”. I wish you all the very best as you fly the nest. May you always meet kind people, and may life so arrange itself, that you are always kind to others. May your lives be filled with joy, laughter, and friends. It has been quite the journey, both physically and virtually. Who would have thought our meal at Doma’s as a group in early March 2020, filled with chatter of a rumoured pandemic, would have ended up being our last supper? You have experienced things not experienced in 100 years, and may this serve as a story to the generation of Woodstock students in the next pandemic: that yes, though filled with struggle and pain, this too shall pass. May the ancient Hebraic poet’s line be true for all of you: that weeping may endure through the night, but joy cometh in the morning. When these times of weeping have passed, may great joy and new learning comeths to you all.

Dear Aliciah, Daanish, Juweeriya, Kangmin, Kyutae, Mannat, Naman, Tanvi, Simon and Yash

We have been lucky to get to know you over these past three tumultuous years. We remember when we arrived from Zimbabwe, and felt that you were advising us on the intricacies of Woodstock culture and tradition. We hope we have been able to repay some of your helpfulness and kindness of those early days as we grew into the role of being your advisors.

A few memory fragments from the past three years: Kyutae - hiking and debating the pro and cons of various forms of computer memory and Bible Studies, Juweeriya - teaching me about your life in Somaliland and your courage in coping with so many challenges . Daanish, your commitment to online learning and sheer hard work and persistence has made us so proud. Aliciah – your naughty smile and sense of humour hiding your inner strength. Simon - your wicked sense of humour always made early morning advisor time enjoyable, even when you were raising complaints and issues for us to resolve! Yashdemonstrating again and again his last minute ingenuity and out of the box thinking to get some project over the finish-line at the last minute. Namaan - you joined us a little later but very quickly made yourself known as an engaging real thinker and movie-buff and I’ve learnt a lot from you. Mannat – always to be relied upon to organise us all and sort out the multitudes of orders from Llamas for advisor nights. Tanvi - you have always played so kindly with our kids!

We know that this has not been an easy year for any of you (or us!) but we trust that it will have taught you some resilience and inner strength that you will be able to draw on in years to come. We can’t wait to hear about your future adventures as you leave Woodstock and go forth into the world.

Without you, I’m not sure how my Woodstock experience would have gone. You guys remind me of the people who made it so fun. All of the times we hung out, made fun of each other, sang, and played guitar in dorms will live on in my memory for the rest of my life. We did some dumb things together and I’m going to miss you guys a lot, but hey, this isn’t the end for all of us; we’ll meet again someday.

Wilderness Hikes:- Mr.Maliickkk lol. He’s a chill dude, he just needs to go to sleep, then we good!!!

Cross Country Boys:- Man, I hated running. To be honest, running with you all was just too much fun for me to give up, even though it was for a longgg semester. But, hey, it’s been awesome running with you all, and I hope you have a bright future ahead of you.

Hauen and the Chip monks:- It was a short yet fun time we had during our practice for our talent show performance. Although we couldn’t make it the next time, it was fun practicing in the band room hoping Mr. Musick wouldn’t kick me out, cuz I’m not a BAND studenttt! Also, Haeun needs some stress pills!!!

Football Boys:- Oh wait, another drill again, 6 AM in the MORNING¿? Jokes aside, it was fun coming back from school and just start playing with Mr. Hutten shouting at us to warm up. Especially, to release school stress, and yeah getting up at 6 AM in the morning helped me a lot with my concentration in class!!!

Advisors and Advisees:- You guys were the ones who made my Woodstock experience a lot of fun. I enjoyed the several times we played various games during advisor night, and to be honest, I could not have asked for a better advisory.

Mom and Dad: Thank you for supporting me through everything in my life and my journey in Woodstock. You are the foundation for everything, and without you, I would be nowhere. From bailing me out of problems , to making sure that I am supported in every manner, I cannot even begin to thank you for the unlimited love and support you have given me. Aymaan: You are the best sibling I could ask for. Always supporting me in everything, emotionally and academically, and being the kindest and most gentle older brother. Simon, Warris, Suryansh, Rishi, Aaryaman: You guys are real ones. Always been such great friends, and have shown immense understanding to me, even when I’m not the most likeable at times. Simon: Someone who I’ll always remember as a friend who was kind to me ever since I stepped foot in WS, and even though I have messed up, always supported me, and helped me become more social. But, you gotta stop fighting with Beavan man. Haha, even though you’re right, stuff ain’t gonna change. Warris: Another example of a friend who’s supported me throughout, shown me the ropes of what it is like to be in WS, and the jokes and roast battles will never get old. Insulting each other’s basketball skills, (imma always be better than you: jk). Improve your 3’s, beating me once in a contest doesn’t mean anything, don’t be too confident lol. Suryansh: Again, someone who has shown me understanding and kindness, and helped me through really tough times in school (Don’t be an emo kid though , ugly as hell). Rishi: Although you came in 11th grade, I’ve developed a friendship with you that I couldn’t have with many others. We will never like maths, the class really does suck. Aaryaman: A friend like no other. Brooo, you one crazy person. Smirking in Global Politics will be one of the highlights in my time at WS, especially when you get into trouble most of the time, and sometimes time, lmao.

Jalal, Garv, Kung: Coming as scared new kids into 9th grade, I got to know you guys almost better than almost anyone else. Jalal: Someone who has sat down and discussed serious stuff with me, and given me true advice on how to solve issues, and chilling and playing pubg, or going to buzz, ordering pyuthanis, you’re a friend whom I’ll never forget. But, lay off the flour tho. Garv: The goat of Billiards, but c’mon, you ain’t gonna make trickshots. Keep on dreaming g. But, again, like few others, you’ve shown me compassion, and understanding, and buzz trips were fun, especially looking through Ramchander’s overpriced goods. Kung: Another g, kinda like me, who likes to be by himself. A really close friend, and one who I got to spend lots of time with. Clock tower cafe wasn’t too bad. Y’all three are some of the closest friends I have made, and been great throughout.

Saif, Shoaib: You guys have been real chill. Helped me out when I haven’t been the best, and been kind as well. But, y’all look way to alike (of course, being twins). To date, I get confused between you guys, but you also g’s.

Aeternum: One of the craziest bunch of people I’ll ever know. From Jazz Jam to Talent Show, I realized the strength that existed in the close-knit relationships between everyone. We gonna go out with a bang. Peaceeee!! We finna kill this!

Woodstock is a unique place where I met amazing people. People who made an impact on me and who I will never forget. People who I wish would stay in my life forever. I hate it that we didn’t really get to spend senior year together, oh all those memories that we could have made…... but those late-night calls tho.

The tale of the three idiots: Ace, Von.. man I wish I knew you two all my life. It’s like I have missed out on the fun that we could have had together. Garv dude it’s only uphill for you from here. You are so talented and smart that you make me doubt myself, and I am pretty dang confident. Kungdiango Wijunamaiauisukkhsykh I could not have made it through Woodstock without you my guy. You are my savior. Don’t leave me senπ. Yall better not get lost in the world and forget about me.

The gang: Those late nights with the boys and getting caught is what I am talking about. Shibo you impress my guy, every day, and it’s awesome. Keya well I guess you are one of the boys. You are awesome, sometimes, other times you are just Keya haha. Jackson, you came in late but stayed for good. Man, we gotta have that boxing match. Aeternum: we have come a long way. I joined in 9nt grade in these four years I have seen so many great characters grow. I could not have asked for better classmates. Just yesterday it was ninth grade and we were chasing Kangmin, now it’s the 12th and we’re chasing dreams. Some of us found them and some of us haven’t, but that’s for later. I want to thank my Mum and Dad for letting me attend WS, you guys are the people I love the most and I cannot thank you enough for how much you have done for me. It’s been an amazing experience, all the way from having deep talks to roasting each other every other day. I want to thank Simon, Araan, Warris, Ishaan, Big J, and Aaryaman for making the best out of what we could at WS. Making every day an enjoyable experience with its downsides. Araan, we gotta find the black hood someday. Thanks for your hard work as my personal assistant. Simon, you need to stop drinking redbulls. Ishaan, create more wild music. WS really turned out to be a short journey filled with sweet & salty memories!!! Still can t imagine how time flew by so freaking fast Although I joined WS in 11th so one could assume that it might not be as hard for me to leave as it is for my fellow classmates who ve been here since 7th grade But let me just say, the people I’ve met here have made every day, every event, even the lousiest ones, super exciting for me It is as hard for me as it is for others, a BITTERSWEET experience!! First of all, I’d like to say that my three years and Woodstock went by in a flash, and I enjoyed all the experiences. There is no good way to start this, and given my lack of sleep I might miss some people and I am sorry :). Thank you to all the teachers who had to deal with me, especially my math class. Doaa, my favorite person on earth, you’re gonna do so well in life and without you, I would definitely not have survived online school and the endless zoom calls. River; Thank you for dealing with me, you always know how to cheer me up, and I’m gonna miss you, visit me on your world tour and have fun :) Anjoli, Keya; you guys are awesome. Anjoli thanks for all the laughs, without you, Woodstock would be boring. Keya, we made it and I know that you’re gonna do great things. Ritvik, Our rant sessions were more therapeutic than you could have imagined, and thank you for everything. I’m so glad we became closer this year and I know you’re gonna do great things. It seems just the other day that Daanish joined the family of Woodstock in July 2017. And it was family, Farid and Iqbal Zaheer, who inspired him to experience this amazing school in the hills. Our hearts were filled with joy at the amazing educational and life opportunity he was getting, and some concern about how well he would adjust to a new school .

When we left school finally that day we felt a sadness on leaving our 15 year old but were also secure in the knowledge that he was in a safe, healthy place where the opportunity to learn, question and think critically would always be available. Mixed emotions indeed.

We are grateful for the school’s cooperation and understanding, particularly the practical, compassionate and always-ready-to-listen dorm parents of Woodstock especially Pravin Jelaji, Huten and Sondeep. And, of course, the doctors and nurses who handle worried parents and sick children with ease and experience. They truly played a fantastic role in our child's life at school . They are extraordinary people.

It was wonderfully encouraging to see how the school included students of different faiths, backgrounds and cultural moori ngs in its activities. We remember vividly when all the children in their bright Punjabi costu mes danced the bhangra on India's Independence Day. So much colour, fun, and such good memories will last Daanish and us a lifetime and will hold him in good stead in challenging times.

We recall Daanish's pride in taking part in table tennis games and competition and becoming part of the school's team. It was gratifying for us as parents that he could soak up such an enriching, vibrant and diverse school atmosphere . We have seen Daanish become a confident individual, able to put thoughts to paper in an articulate way, with the right references and citations. His teachers and academic counsellors have given him strong support always encouraging him to do better because they believed he can, and he proved that to himself time and time again.

As parents, we appreciated the educational, engaging, and inspiring letters of the school principals Dr Johnathan Long and Dr Craig Cook. It was something we looked forward to.

Woodstock School proved to be everything and more for us and Daanish. Thank you!

We were really worried about your future and on our sudden decision to shift to India from Dubai, but we are ever grateful to the school that gave you a cosmopolitan environment where you gelled in from the word go. It was a pleasant surprise to see that, in a couple of hours on the 1st day at school, you were freely roaming around with your newly found friends, allaying all our fears to rest.

It’s been 5 years at Woodstock and we still remember how reluctant you were to join a boarding school in the hills considering your fear of motion sickness. Ever since, not only have you conquered that fear, but Woodstock has now shaped you into a bright young man ready to take on the world.
