Continued city ownership of the Old Courthouse should be the goal of any development plan for the historic building of the Square. As for the old Sheriff’s House, maybe the city should think about an offer.
Those were among the recommendations made last week by the Old Courthouse and Sheriff’s House Advisory Committee as it prepared a resolution to send to the City Council, which will make the final decision on how those buildings are developed. The commission examined several options for use of the space in the two
buildings. New uses could include a banquet hall, office and visitor center, and an arts-focused community center managed by the Woodstock Public Library in the Courthouse, and an eight-room boutique hotel, a new restaurant, a banquet room, a museum, an incubator kitchen, and an arts center Please see COURTHOUSE, Page 2

Tax breaks to help Kunes grow By Larry Lough
LARRY@THEWOODSTOCKINDEPENDENT.COM
After winning approval for nearly $800,000 in tax breaks from the City Council, Kunes Country Auto Group plans to get to work on expansion of its dealership at Route 47 and U.S. 14. “As soon as possible,” owner Gregg Kunes said when asked about
the start date for the project. Without discussion at its April 16 meeting, the council approved sales tax and property tax incentives as part of its consent agenda, with no separate vote for that or any other item on the agenda. Kunes plans to spend $3.6 million to expand the nearly 2,100-squarefoot showroom and service facility by 6,000 square feet, according to
floor plans the company provided. City documents show Kunes also wants the state to allow a driveway cut off U.S. 14 into the south side of the property to allow easier access by auto transport trucks and other delivery vehicles. “The process exists to request such a thing,” Garrett Anderson, the city’s director of Economic Development,
