By Sue Taylor
The 100 Best Birdwatching Sites in Australia contains the author’s personal selection of 100 of the best birdwatching sites in all states, territories and islands of Australia. In some cases, the sites are quite specific, such as Hasties Swamp, some are huge (Lakefield National Park), some are lengthy (the Strzelecki Track) and some cover a whole district, such as Katherine. Sue Taylors engaging narrative describes the efforts she goes to in search of particular species. For each site she covers the type of habitat, which special species may be found there and when is the best time to visit. She lists four birds to look out for. Birding Australia's Islands
By Sue Taylor
A thoroughly entertaining personal account of the author’s birding expeditions to some of Australia’s very special islands. She hasn’t attempted to include every one of the 8,371 islands of Australia but she has visited the country’s most extreme islands: the most southerly (Macquarie), the most northerly (Boigu, which just pips Christmas by one degree), the most westerly (Cocos) and the most easterly (Norfolk). Her aim in selecting the islands was very simple: to include those where she’s had fun birding; where she has seen lots of birds, several ‘lifers’ (her own life list of birds encountered in the wild), islands with birds never seen before in Australia or some where she had special encounters with common birds.

An Australian Birding Year
By R. Bruce Richardson
A highly personal account of a phenomenal, once-in -a-lifetime adventure that saw Bruce and his wife, Lynn, embark on a year of travel and birding across the entire continent in a camper van. Their aim was to see Australia, but also to keep a list of the birds that they saw together. That list began with two Gang-gang Cockatoos flying over their son’s yard in Torquay, Victoria and ended a year later watching a lovely little Speckled Warbler on a chilly morning back in Victoria with 638 other species seen in between. Kenn Kaufman said, “The story is superb, and the descriptions of birds, places and people are all original and engaging, and I love the asides and the wise and imaginative comments that Bruce works in on just about every page.
More Australian Birding Tales
A highly personal account of birding, life and travel in the Land Down Under
By R. Bruce Richardson
More Australian Birding Tales takes up where the author’s very successful first book, An Australian Birding Year, ended. In this new book Bruce Richardson describes his further birding adventures, which take his total life list from 672 to 759, well exceeding his initial target of 700 species. He delights in finding new lifer species, whether they are common but not yet seen by him or mega rarities, but he also glories in the fact that his birding trips take him to stunning parts of Australia that he wouldn’t normally have visited. He travels through the outback, takes the ferry over to Tasmania, makes several pelagic expeditions and goes on a memorable trip to Cocos/Keeling and Christmas Islands. He describes his travels with humour, and intersperses the ticks and the dips of birding with personal anecdotes of a life lived through good times and bad.
Australian Birds, their Nests and Eggs (Facsimile Edition)
A guide to the nests and eggs of Australian birds that are known to breed in Australia and on Australian offshore islands
By Gordon Beruldsen
First published in 1980, this 2004 edition is a thorough reference guide to nest and egg identification, with all new colour plates and much additional material. Shape, size, colour, number of eggs in a clutch - all help identify the bird to which the eggs belong. This book carries a strong message to respect the environment that is being explored and to leave the eggs and nests undisturbed. It is therefore a way for birdwatchers and ornithologists to gain a greater insight into Australian birds without actually having to get close to nests. This volume is a facsimile re-issue of the 2004 edition.

Deep Listening to Nature
By Andrew Skeoch
Deep Listening to Nature is an invitation to open our ears to the natural world. Beginning by tuning in to the sounds of creatures around us, Andrew discusses how to identify species by call, interpret their communications and find empathy for their sentence. Part reflection, part nature and travel diary, Andrew asks the question: What does listening reveal about how the living systems of nature function, and why do birds in particular negotiate their interactions in such lyrical and extraordinary ways? He concludes by suggesting we not only listen to learn about nature, but learn from nature. He asks how, in our current environmental crisis, we may mimic what the biosphere has achieved in sustaining life as we move toward an ecological future and in doing so, form a deeper and more personal connection to Country.

How to Survive the Next 100 Years
Lessons from Nature
By Simon Mustoe
A monumentally positive shift in our relationship with Earth. Yet it’s invisible. This book will reveal that real and genuine hope. As animals our brains float above the planet’s surface. We were made to be mobile and carry our intelligence with us. A huge leap for mankind is happening right now. Contained within our minds and everything around us is the solution to our anxiety. Ecologist and naturalist Simon Mustoe shows us how to consume a more balanced variety of knowledge to become healthier and happier by reconnecting with nature. The key to avoiding disaster is to work within the natural balance of our beautiful world. Cats can make us too conservative (or just enough). Grasshoppers, eels and blue gropers teach us to solve global obesity and food crises. Simply saving wildlife in our own backyards can reduce cost of living by sixty or seventy times

Peter Hitchcock - Defender of Forests
His story protecting tall eucalypts and rainforests
By Peter Hitchcock, Lorraine Cairnes
Peter Hitchcock was writing this book at the time of his death in 2019. It is his story of a lifetime of connection with Australia’s tall eucalypt forests and rainforests, and their conservation. It is a dual story of his life, and the science and conservation of the tall eucalypt forests, their use by Aboriginal people, their ‘discovery’ by early European explorers, their exploitation by European settlers and those who followed them, the battles and successes for their conservation, and the management which will be needed to conserve them in the future. Peter made extraordinary national and global contributions to forest conservation, rainforest protection, World Heritage, and national parks. He was a visionary, with a green future for our planet firmly in his sights. Peter Hitchcock left an indelible mark on nature conservation and on those who knew him.

Adventures in Climate Science
Scientists' tales from the frontiers of climate change Foreword by Karl Kruszelnicki
By Wendy Bruere, Karl Kruszelnicki
The experts tell us the world is warming, but why do we care so much about a few lousy degrees? These tales of adventure from remote and remarkable parts of the Earth explore a multitude of ways the world is changing and explain the science behind exactly what those few degrees mean. Scientists share their own stories about falling into crevasses, facing sharks, surviving cyclones, chasing pirates on the high seas, and more. Along the way, they examine critical elements of climate change, including sea ice and glacier melt, rising sea levels, bushfires, collapsing ecosystems, shifting ocean currents, and extreme weather events. With knowledge comes power, and this book makes sense of how and why a warming planet matters.

In Crocodile Land
Wandering in Northern Australia
By Ion Idriess
In Crocodile Land is principally the story of travels by lugger through northern waters and into slimy creeks where the huge crocodiles abound. The author took part in many hunting expeditions and enlightens us on the various methods adopted for catching these fearsome creatures… We journey next into the country of the buffaloes. Here on sunlit clearings through thickets of pandanus palms the buffaloes were to be found in hundreds…A man must have a fine horse, intelligent and sure-footed: he must be a perfect shot, for there is only one sure way of killing a buffalo with the first shot-a bullet into the backbone where the hide is thin. Once the shooting starts, the horse must continue his gallop, faster than the buffaloes and alongside them, keeping them going.
