AUSTRALIAN PHONEME SERIES

Illustrator: Janie Frith AUSTRALIAN PHONEME SERIES

Author: Judith Barker

Judith attributes Dr Seuss’ fantastical tales about faraway places to her love of writing children’s books. She is an award-winning author, education consultant and aspiring playwright. After teaching phonics and phonemic awareness to children in Europe, the Middle East, India and China, Judith saw a growing need to support literacy in schools. Her desire to lend a ‘helping hand’ to those involved in the art of teaching basic reading skills resulted in a series of wonderfully written and illustrated, Australian phonemethemed stories which include, ‘The OO in Uluru,’ ‘The EE in the Deep, Blue Sea’ and ‘The O in the Snow.’ Apart from developing reading skills, the books foster imagination, language and sound-spelling recognition.

Judith’s fantastic phoneme series of books support the teaching and learning in language arts, balanced literacy, phonemic awareness, phonics, indigenous studies, science, geography and across the primary school curriculum. When she is not writing children’s stories and plays, she is usually found somewhere exploring the great outdoors.

A highly regarded landscape painter, Janie lives in regional Victoria and is constantly inspired by the beautiful lush landscap of South Gippsland. With a diverse range of works in a variety of media, including charcoal, acrylic and oils, she has exhibited at numerous galleries across Australia. A Fine Arts trained practitioner, Janie has taught Secondary and Primary School children for over 20 years.

After completing an Advanced Diploma in Illustration a few years ago, Janie continues to collaborate with Judith Barker to illustrate the Woodslane Press series of phoneme children’s story books, a aid in developing literacy. The first book in the series (The OO in Uluru) received the 2019 Speech Pathology book of the year and The EE in the Deep Blue Sea was shortlisted for the 202 award.

Author: Toby Hammerschlag

Toby Hammerschlag was a special education teacher for thirty years, concentrating on assisting children with learning disabilities to become literate. She was born in South Africa and immigrated to Australia in 1986 with her husband and two young daughters. She was a competitive netball player in both countries. Her inspiration for the novel comes from her many years of working with children from diverse backgrounds combined with her love of sport and the Sydney landscape.

Four diverse students with very different backgrounds form a friendship at a Sydney school. At Darlinghurst East Public School, Emma, Maha, Simon and Talia, learn about themselves and each other through the unusual combination of Scripture class and netball. As Mr. Zulman reveals the story of the Exodus to the students, they reveal their own stories to each other: Simons parents are separated and warring with each other. Talia’s dyslexia makes the classroom an everyday struggle. Maha’s family is facing deportation back to war-torn Iraq, and, Emma, who has lived all her life in Sydney, begins for the first time to appreciate the value of freedom. Outside of class as the netball season progresses, freedom takes on a new meaning for the four students when on the very day of the netball finals, Maha and her family face the very real prospect of deportation.

Frank is blind, but nonetheless loves the outdoors and the feel of the sun on his face. In this new story Frank and his friends (the Wilderness Warriors) go on a camping trip with the intention of getting up early to see the sunrise. However, on the pre-dawn walk to the lookout the torch batteries die and the group are plunged into darkness. Frank takes over the lead, making his way confidently with his knowledge of the path and his stick, while the others follow. The story thus delights children while at the same time giving them an insight into the experience of blindness.

AUSTRALIAN PICTURE BOOKS

Author: Judith Barker

When you tell me you love me, I’m over the moon. When you like what I do, I can reach for the stars. This heartwarming and vibrantly illustrated story is a love letter from a child, written almost entirely in idioms, to someone who means the world to them. An idiom is a phrase whose individual words have little or no logical link to its actual accepted meaning. The English language is rich in idioms, and it can be very difficult for children to wrap their heads around them. This book is an extremely engaging and memorable way for children to learn all about idioms and some of the more common examples.
