Bandura's Self-Efficacy Theory in Action

Bandura's theory of self-efficacy is one of the most important discoveries in modern psychology that has transformed how we understand human behaviour. Through years of research across different disciplines, we now know that our self-efficacy is a central concept in how we behave and is critical in determining the capacity that students have to shape their own lives. The belief that our behaviour can yield a positive result within a specific domain explains many experiences that teachers face in the classroom - why, in the face of good teaching, students still don't attempt the work; why, in some lessons, students are seen to work harder than in others Dr Neil Gilbride CPsychol guides the reader in how we can take action to raise student self-efficacy and, subsequently, the agency that students feel in taking control of their lives and studies.

What Teachers Want to Know About Teaching Climate Change

Nurturing Hope and Resilience (Grades K-12)

Inspire the next generation to create a sustainable and hopeful future Climate change is one of the greatest threats humanity has ever faced.

The most recent 10 years have been the hottest on record, and the results have been increasingly extreme storms, flooding, and fires around the world. Understanding the causes of climate change and potential solutions is essential learning for students, and is aligned with NGSS standards

In an effort to support teachers, Corwin conducted a market survey sent to more than 135,000 educators and school leaders in North America, asking about their concerns regarding teaching climate change.

In response to these concerns, authors Bertha Vazquez, Kimi Waite, and Lauren Madden wrote What Teachers Want to Know About Teaching Climate Change to provide research-based and classroom-tested guidance for K-12 educators to teach climate change accurately, effectively, and confidently.

The book gives busy teachers the tools they need to incorporate climate change education across disciplines and align the content with existing standards without adding a new topic for overworked teachers to tackle.

This book is an essential resource for educators and leaders inside and outside of the science classroom who want to help their students build a better tomorrow.

Unleashing Greatness - a strategy for school improvement

There is a paradox at the heart of contemporary school improvement and system change in education. Why is it that despite the phenomenal increase in our recent knowledge about what works in schooling, that standards still lag behind expectations and school level performance is far too variable?

Unleashing Greatness addresses this paradox and concludes that unless we focus unrelentingly on the quality of teaching in both our small and large-scale reform efforts, then current practice will never meet society's expectations.

The book begins by reviewing the global evidence on school and system reform and from this proposes an eight-step strategy for both sustained systemic educational change and school improvement.

Although top-down policy may be necessary initially if the school or system is in a poor state, but as one progresses the move from good to great, cannot be mandated - one has to 'unleash greatness'.

The book provides a guide to action for these eight steps that when followed authentically will unleash greatness.

Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion

Critical pedagogy is a transformative approach to education, moving beyond a simple transmission model of teaching where the teacher imparts predetermined knowledge to students.

This participatory and empowering pedagogy can ensure classrooms become places of opportunity. Students are encouraged to critique their world and develop the essential attributes needed to become consciously aware, politically knowledgeable and socially responsible.

Critical Pedagogy: a teacher's companion provides a refreshing perspective on English secondary education and discusses why critical pedagogy is more essential than ever for our marginalised and oppressed students.

Realistic, pragmatic and sensitive suggestions enable the school leader and classroom teacher to consider critical pedagogy as an ongoing responsive, moral and political endeavour to fight social injustice.

This book is a must-read for all those who value education as the practice of freedom and emancipation.

Student Assessment

Better Evidence, Better Decisions, Better Learning

Fuel student-driven success and enhance learning with better assessment. What if there was a better way to collect and interpret assessment data that could strengthen the link between teaching and learning? Student Assessment: Better Evidence, Better Decisions, Better Learning is the innovative guide to show you how it’s done and done right. This unique book offers a new assessment model focused on decision -driven data collection and provides an arsenal of tools for collecting better evidence to increase student learning.

Assessing Students, Not Standards Begin With What Matters Most

See beyond content standards to the broader context of life-changing skills. The standards-based learning and grading movement of the past twenty years has ushered in a critical shift in assessment that demands clarity in both what is being measured and how well students are learning. Seeing the value in this evolution, a wave of schools has invested enormous effort to institutionalize the policy and practices of the movement. In doing so, many focused their initial efforts squarely on grading and fell short of the more important work-classroom assessment. There are important lessons in these missteps and failures. This groundbreaking, "next generation" approach to classroom assessment challenges educators to reflect on the connections between growth, mastery, and student self-efficacy and to prioritize the transferable skills of metacognition and self-regulation in assessments.

The Teaching Delusion

Why teaching in our classrooms and schools isn't good enough (and how we can make it better)

Schools are filled with great teachers, but is great teaching taking place in every classroom, in every school? Bruce Robertson doesn’t believe it is. Why not? This book argues that there are two reasons. Firstly, because there isn’t a shared understanding of what makes great teaching. Secondly, because schools haven’t developed the strong professional learning culture necessary to drive the development of great teaching in every classroom. Through discussion of key messages from educational research, and drawing on a track record of success, this book explores how these barriers can be addressed, leading to transformations in teaching practice across classrooms and schools.

The Teaching Delusion 2: Teaching Strikes Back

Whisper it quietly: a lot of time is being wasted in a lot of schools. Actually, why are we whispering? What we should really be doing is calling this out - loudly! The job of schools is too important for us to keeping quiet. Schools are in the 'transforming lives' business. There is no time to waste! In The Teaching Delusion: Why Teaching In Our Schools Isn't Good Enough (And How We Can Make It Better), Bruce Robertson explored 'delusions' that are holding our schools back. In this sequel, The Teaching Delusion 2: Teaching Strikes Back, he digs deeper into three areas: curriculum, pedagogy and leadership. In doing so, he tackles the issue of time-wasting head-on. By calling out specific delusions in each area, Robertson suggests strategies for dismantling these and offers a clear roadmap forward.

Ausubel's Meaningful Learning in Action

American psychologist and psychiatrist David Ausubel is well known for his famous quote: "The most important single factor influencing learning is what the learner already knows. Ascertain this and teach him accordingly" (Ausubel, 1968, vi). But few know about the richness and importance of his assimilation theory of meaningful learning and retention, which holds many more instruction-altering insights. One of the main reasons why this theory is so important is because it focuses on the end goal teachers are after: teachers want students to develop vast bodies of knowledge in the subjects they are taught. Ausubel explains that the only way to achieve this is through supporting students to learn meaningfully. This book explores the key elements of the theory and what it means to learn meaningfully. It then links the theory to highly practical implications teachers can use.

Responsive Coaching:

Evidence-informed instructional coaching that works for every teacher in your school

Great teachers make a huge difference to students' lives. Helping them to improve throughout their career is vital. But how can we best do this? Multiple studies suggest that Instructional Coaching - a schoolcentred approach to developing teachers - is one of the best bets we have. However, to make the most of Instructional Coaching, we must be clear about what it means. Many writers disagree about this, proposing different definitions and methods. In Responsive Coaching, Josh Goodrich examines contrasting Instructional Coaching models, combining research and practical experience to build an approach that adapts to meet the needs of individual teachers. This enables coaches to flex their style depending on where a teacher is on their journey towards expertise.

Imperfect Leadership

A book for leaders who know they don't know it all

In Imperfect Leadership Steve Munby eloquently reflects upon and describes a leadership approach that is strong on self-awareness and positive about the importance of asking for help. When asked to describe his own leadership style, Steve Munby former chief executive of the National College for School Leadership uses the word imperfect. This is not something he is ashamed of; he feels imperfect leadership should be celebrated. Too often we are given examples of leaders who are put on some kind of pedestal, lauded as superhero leaders who have it all worked out and are so good at what they do that nobody else can come close. This book is the antidote to that flawed perception. Imperfect Leadership is an honest reflection upon leadership. It is about Steves journey, covering his highs and lows and, ultimately, how he learned to refine and improve his leadership

Equity in education: Levelling the playing field of learning - a practical guide for teachers

Equity in the Classroom sets out a new equity-based approach in education to help teachers improve the prospects of underserved and working-class pupils who for too long have not fulfilled their full potential in schools. The equity approach recognises that we must address our own cultural biases and barriers within the classroom, while helping to remove extra barriers to learning experienced by children outside schools. Based on thousands of research studies and years of working with expert teachers, the book sets out the principles and practical strategies for trainee teachers, teachers and teacher leaders.

Gifted?: The shift to enrichment, challenge and equity

Gifted and talented is a zombie. It is dead, but still walking around. There are new labels to stratify students - more able, significantly able, high-aptitude learners. New labels do not equal new thinking. The concept of gifted is still stubbornly embedded in our educational structures. There are pervasive narratives that educators should prioritise extension for some students and not others. We can dispel the myth that pitching lessons judiciously to middle ability, and then differentiating up and down, is effective. This book explores how we can provide every student with rigorous challenge

True Inclusion with UDL

Designing to the Edges to Reach Every Learner

This new book by inclusion and UDL expert Patti Ralabate aims to dispel long-held myths that can limit educators' views of student potential, provide opportunities for readers to reconsider their current perspectives on learning and student success, and offer strategies that will help educators create unbiased, culturally responsive, and truly inclusive learning environments for all students. Although the term inclusion is historically associated with learning environments for students with disabilities, True Inclusion with UDL is based on the assertion that consciously building inclusive learning environments and communities can be achieved by deliberately braiding several key conceptual and curriculum frameworks, creating an environment that is welcoming, respectful, engaging, and safe for each and every learner.

The A-Z of Diversity & Inclusion

The A-Z of Diversity and Inclusion is a powerful blend of advice, reflection and provocation on these vital topics, organised around the 26 letters of the English alphabet. Great educators recognise how diversity enriches their organisation. They have an ambition for every learner (adult and child) to be seen, represented and included, for their needs to be met and any barriers they are experiencing to be understood, tackled and overcome. To achieve this requires dogged determination, relentless and forensic focus and unwavering optimism and energy. Inclusive educators quite literally change lives.

Alternative Provision Huh

For one reason or another, mainstream education does not suit every young person. Many young people are educated in alternative provision, which is defined by the Department for Education as educational provision 'for pupils who, because of exclusion, illness or other reasons, would not otherwise receive suitable education'. As of 2023, over 25,000 young people are enrolled in alternative provision, and those numbers continue to rise. It is essential, then, that the curriculum on offer in alternative provision is exemplary, as these young people - already facing extraordinary challenges - need the very best if they are going to progress successfully into adulthood.

Offers practical guidance and advice on how to approach maths leadership and explores the challenges and rewards that come with this unique position. The book also covers day-to-day issues that arise when leading maths, in particular results and accountability, as well as difficult situations more generally.

After The Adults Change

Achievable behaviour nirvana

In this follow-up to his bestselling book When the Adults Change, Everything Changes, Paul Dix explains how teachers and school leaders can move beyond the behaviour management revolution and build a school culture rooted in relational practice. There is a behavioural nirvana. One that is calm, purposeful and respectful. Where poor behaviour is as rare as a PE teacher in trousers and where relationships drive achievement. Annoyingly and predictably, the road is hard and the ride bumpy and littered with cliches. It is achievable though. And when you get there, it is a little slice of heaven. In After the Adults Change Paul shows you that, after the behaviour of the adults (i.e. the staff) has changed, there is an opportunity to go wider and deeper

Running the Room: The Teacher's Guide to Behaviour

Good behaviour is the beginning of great learning. All children deserve classrooms that are calm, safe spaces where everyone is treated with dignity. Creating that space is one of the most important things a teacher needs to be able to do. But all too often teachers begin their careers with the bare minimum of training - or worse, none. How students behave, socially and academically, dictates whether or not they will succeed or struggle in school. Every child comes to the classroom with different skills, habits, values and expectations of what to do. There's no point just telling a child to behave; behaviour must be taught. Behaviour is a curriculum. This simple truth is the beginning of creating a classroom culture where everyone flourishes, pupils and staff. Running the Room is the teacher's guide to behaviour.
