Cuteness Overload Looking Back on 2023 Chief's Cross-Country Voyage Pear Purrs Again SHELTER TAILS

From The CEO

I came to work at Woods Humane Society over six years ago because I believed it to be one of the most dynamic, progressive, and impactful animal shelters I have ever seen. Since then, that belief has proven to be true, over and over again. From my time working first-hand in our adoptions program, to my years as the Director of Development, it has been my privilege to witness Woods Humane Society and this special San Luis Obispo County community come together to make an enormous impact.

Now, as the leader of this remarkable organization, it is an honor for me to build upon our proud legacy and partnerships.

In 2023, we began to do just that. An incredible 5,558 individuals donated, allowing us to respond to the growing crisis in animal homelessness in our state. We increased the number of animals we cared for and found loving homes for 2,852 dogs and cats. Our dedicated medical staff altered 5,524 animals and provided hundreds of pet owners with access to affordable care. However, beyond the statistics, it is the people who inspire my confidence in the bright future of Woods and animal welfare in SLO County. Whether it’s the participants at dog training classes, fundraising events, or volunteer orientations, I know these are the faces powering our adoptions, foster homes, generous contributions, and enthusiastic social media support—all collectively making a tangible difference for homeless animals. To each individual contributing to our shared community and mission, thank you for being an invaluable part of this journey.

Sincerely,

Board of Directors

2023 Year in Review

Thanks to your support, thousands of animals and families received help from Woods’ programs and services.

Cheers to You!

Our biggest annual events, the Tails Gala and Wiggle Waggle Fall Festival, never fail to be the highlights of our year. They give us an incredible opportunity to spread awareness, raise funds, and help more animals. They are also a time to thank and celebrate our generous community, including Woods Humane Alliance. You can view the names of our Humane Alliance members, learn more about the program, and see our event galleries at WoodsHumane.org/HA.

wait to see you again this year, on

Our Tails 2023 “Cirque du Stray” Gala was filled with jaw-dropping feats—both acrobatic and philanthropic—and we were astounded by the $194,000 raised for the animals we serve. Tails 2024, “The Pet Gala”, promises to be another event to remember. Please save the date and get ready to dress to the nines on June 8, 2024 at the Octagon Barn!

CHIEF AMONG US

Having spent the bulk of his young life contained in a kennel, handsome, 100-pound Chief arrived at Woods bursting with energy. Despite having been previously hit by a car and sustaining a chronic injury to his front paw, Chief’s unbridled strength still overpowered potential adopters. As a result, Chief anxiously awaited a match for many months.

As his frustration began to cause him stress, the Woods Team began thinking outside the box. Last summer, the solution came to us: A Doberman rescue in Oklahoma wanted to take him in, and had even found a family ready to adopt him! When the transport fell through at the last minute, though, our hopes were dashed.

Just then, one of our own sta members stepped up to the plate, volunteering to drive Chief across the country. Thrilled, our team waited with baited breath for the update that put a smile on all of our faces: After one year and four days in the shelter, Chief had spent his first night “Out of the Woods” sprawled across the bed with his new owners. His family has since shared that Chief was an immediate perfect fit and that we can never have him back!

It may have taken hundreds of days and thousands of miles, but the support of this community enabled us to go the distance to finally find Chief the forever home of his dreams.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE FOR ANIMALS IN NEED

REPAIRING PEAR, FROM THE INSIDE OUT

At first glance, Pear looked just as you would expect a young, brown tabby to look. However, appearances can be deceiving.

Hidden inside this sweet kitty was a severe hernia, or hole, in her diaphragm that had allowed her abdominal organs to slip out of place and into her chest cavity. Pear’s life was in imminent danger.

Thanks to your support, she was rushed into surgery to restore her organs and repair her hernia.

After several weeks of foster care and gentle TLC, she returned, healed and happy. Pear soon found the family that could fix the only remaining “hole” in her life: her need for a loving home.

Finally, the pieces fell into place for Pear, both inside and out, and we couldn’t be happier for her.

Help us go the extra mile for animals in need. Send your donation with the enclosed remit or donate online at WoodsHumane.org/Donate.

THE PUPPY PREDICAMeNT

so many pups

It all started around Christmas of 2022. We were surprised to receive several pleas in a row from local shelters to take in litters of puppies that had just been born. By March, we had brought in 107 puppies—more than three-times the number as in the same time frame in 2022. The cuteness overload did not stop with the spring season. By the end of 2023, we saw a 96% increase in puppy intakes compared to 2022.

All told, we found loving homes for a whopping 267 puppies last year.

While we all adore puppies—who doesn’t?—this new trend of more puppies being born and not kept by their owners is perplexing. Likely, the upsurge in accidental and unwanted litters traces back to two issues: the inaccessibility of spay/neuter programs in some communities (because of rising veterinary prices and a shortage of veterinary sta ) and an oversaturation of backyard breeding programs that sprang up in response to the high demand for puppies during the pandemic.

WHATEVER THE CAUSE, THE BOOM POSES A PROBLEM

parvo proBlems

Young animals do not have fully developed immune systems and are therefore at higher risk of contracting deadly diseases like parvovirus. These highly-contagious diseases can put a whole shelter population in danger, which is why most shelters are unable to take in sick pups. Woods is fortunate to have the resources to give ailing puppies a fighting chance, and we are grateful to maintain a high parvo survival rate.

GROWING PaINS

On the other side of the coin, these puppies soon turn into dogs. Without the proper care, young dogs can present problems for unprepared owners and can soon end up back in the shelter. While puppies are easily adopted, older dogs do not find homes as quickly, leading to longer stays and tighter quarters.

PREDICAMeNT

THE HOMELESS PUPPY

PROBLEM FOR A FEW REASONS:

Over-PUPulaTIon

With the increase in puppies, regional shelters are at risk of overpopulation and overcrowding. Thanks to your support, we are doing everything we can to increase transports, spay/neuter surgeries and adoptions.

Puppies need extra medical care on top of the standard vaccines, microchips, sterilizations, and adoption services. This means they require even more than our budgeted average cost of care, which has already increased exponentially in our current economic climate.

How To Help

In order to solve the puppy problem, we look to you for your continued support, and we also hope you’ll help us spread the word about the serious need for sterilization, socialization, and adoption to stop over-pupulation.

Woods o ers the only two low-cost spay/neuter clinics in SLO County and our Woods University dog training program o ers twice-weekly puppy social hour classes. We also work each day to spread the word about the many benefits of adopting a pet from a shelter rather than shopping. Thank you for your continued generosity which fuels our adoption, medical and training programs and enables us to save more and more animals each year.
