Sequoia and the Unseen Cats Buddy Graduates from Woods

From Neil Trent, CEO I first set eyes on little Mojo the day he arrived on a transport from a shelter partner in Wasco. Quivering and wet from his bath, he seemed so lost and vulnerable. Like so many of you have done, I made a connection in that very moment. Yes, I adopted him, but as you might guess, it is he who has brought so much joy and richness to my life these last few months. Perhaps that is the gift of the weakest of creatures among us: to remind us humans that kindness is our greatest power and surest road to hope in times of uncertainty. The last two years have been a challenge, to say the least. But if, as Gandhi said, you can judge a society by how it treats its most vulnerable members— animals—then I have witnessed a bright ray of hope on the Central Coast. The trials we have faced have only highlighted the enduring compassion for animals burning brightly in this community. In the midst of chaos, our local families adopted 2,400 dogs and cats into their homes last year, and if adoption wasn’t feasible, they found other ways to support the cause:

Mojo

Canine Executive Officer

• 382 families fostered vulnerable animals until they were ready for adoption • Caring neighbors dropped countless pounds of food, toys, treats, and much-needed supplies on our doorstep • Our dedicated volunteers clocked 8,659 hours of vital work, from walking dogs to surgery assistance to laundry • All year long, our loyal social media followers spread word about our animals to hundreds of thousands of people near and far • Finally, in spite of trying financial times, 13,088 of our local neighbors and friends found room in their budgets to donate to help dogs and cats in need Each of these pieces of the puzzle came together to make an incredible impact on the individual lives of dogs and cats on the Central Coast last year. That includes little Mojo, who I am pleased to report has graciously accepted his promotion from Wasco to CEO (Canine Executive Officer) of my family. Every time I look at him, I am reminded of the powerful hope and kindness that is thriving on the Central Coast. Our most vulnerable are in the best of hands here, and Woods Humane Society is endlessly grateful for your enduring support.

We Wiggled and Waggled at Woods! In 2021, for the first time ever, we brought our annual Wiggle Waggle pet celebration to our San Luis Obispo campus for one delightful afternoon of fall festivities. By all accounts it was a joyous event, and we were thrilled to see 630 Woods friends (and their dogs) in person after so long apart. From the canine costumes and carnival games to the “flea market” of local pet-themed vendors, this was certainly one of the highlights of the year for us at Woods. It’s events like these that remind us all of the pure joy, laughter and connection that animals bring to our lives. We hope you enjoyed it too! Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s event on Saturday, October 29, 2022! We can’t wait to wiggle and waggle with you there!

SAVE THE DATE For Tails 2022 We hope that you will dress in your dapper best and join us on June 4, 2022 for Roaring ‘20s – A Tails Gala and an unforgettable evening under the stars.

Project M.E.O.W.: Providing Hope for “Unseen” Cats The bright blue cast that immobilizes her front-left leg does not stop Sequoia from showing you just how sweet she is. Rubbing her cheeks immediately on your extended hand and collapsing in a puddle of purrs in your lap, this cat oozes affection and love. It might surprise you to learn, therefore, that she came to Woods Humane Society as a “community cat.” The term is somewhat misunderstood. She is not owned. She is not stray. She is not feral. Walking the line between a wild animal and a “pet,” she is friendly, outdoor, and living on the good graces of a community of people who might put some food out for her occasionally—or, in this case, who might take her to the clinic when they notice she is suddenly limping. This is how our medical team came to know Sequoia, who is currently healing in our care from what we can only guess was an unplanned encounter with a car. If not for the Good Samaritans who often enjoyed Sequoia’s visits to their yard, she might be suffering alone out in the cold—or worse. Luckily, these kind folks went out of their way to help this one member of our community’s most under-served population of pets: unowned cats.

unowned and Unseen

According to Dr. Sklena, Woods Director of Veterinary Medicine, unowned cats are perhaps the most voiceless and helpless of “They go unseen,” she explains. “People don’t get to pet them or cuddle them.” And even though they don’t always make it kno Without it, they suffer in secrecy and silence.

Sequoia is just one of 1,467 community cats who benefited from medical attention at our clinics last year. Woods’ community ca M.E.O.W., offers the one chance at veterinary care that most of these cats will ever receive. And, since our staff takes the time t get much more than the standard spay/neuter and rabies vaccine.

Low-Cost, Individualized Care

Dr. Sklena says her team has helped community cats who needed a tail amputation or a wound sutured before being re-released. They interested in becoming someone’s indoor pet, and were able to transfer them into our adoption program. Thanks to a grant we rec vaccinations against the most common, deadly and contagious feline viruses out there to 500 owned and unowned cats last yea cats will lead healthier, fuller lives.

Of course, the result of all of this hard work is almost as invisible as the cats it serves. The only ones who really see the impact are ou Trap/Neuter/Return rescue partners. Thanks to them and the Project M.E.O.W. fund, Woods Humane Society continues to brea with each passing year. While most of them disappear back into the bushes without even a backward glance, there are a handfu and seem to speak for all of them in saying a very purr-felt thank you for your compassion.

[Just before we printed this newsletter, Sequoia’s cast was removed and she was adopted by one of our own staff members. Wi cats can live happier, healthier lives. Learn more at WoodsHumane.org/Donate/Project-MEOW.]

Building A Brighter Feline Future Last year, Woods Humane Society announced its updated strategic plan, outlining our main objectives for the next five years. One chief focus is the proposed construction of a new shelter facility on our North County campus in Atascadero. This property, which currently houses a cat shelter and our Daphne Fahsing Spay & Neuter Clinic, will grow to offer a completely redesigned, state-of-the-art cattery and adoption center, as well as the expanded ability to offer humane education and dog adoption services in North County. While we are still early on in the review process, Woods is thrilled to share the vision with the community and our longtime supporters, whom we know will join us in eagerly anticipating our ability to offer the best possible shelter services to the dogs and cats of our North County communities.

THE RETURN OF OZ When Oz was returned to Woods just two months after his adoption last August, our staff could see right away that something was very wrong. Oz had lost 50 percent of his bodyweight in those two months. No longer the 12-pound, healthy cat we knew, he arrived back in our care emaciated and severely jaundiced, and had developed a condition called hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver syndrome. Our medical team jumped immediately into action to treat this sweet, affectionate cat and restore him to health and a stable weight. They inserted a feeding tube through which they could manually feed him and administer medications to heal his liver. After hours of daily, painstaking feeding sessions and intensive care, Oz began to show signs that his appetite for life was returning.

First, he gained back some weight. Then, our staff was delighted to see that he no longer needed the feeding tube and was eating on his own! We rechecked his bloodwork and were relieved to see that his liver had improved substantially. Soon, Oz was adopted by a family who agreed to continue to monitor his diet and who understood that he would need a stress-free home where he could continue on his path of recovery and long-term health. Oz is just one of many animals this year whose lives were saved by the medical care they received at Woods Humane Society. Thanks to the generosity of loyal supporters like you, we are able to go above and beyond to give these animals the time, medical care, and loving attention they need to recover and thrive.

The reason? His charming looks belied some not-soadorable behaviors. Buddy wasn’t a fan of strangers or other dogs. He, didn’t like to share his food or toys. He did not approve of belly rubs and preferred to jump all over people to get attention.

HAPPY TEARS FOR RORY When Rory, a tall, handsome husky mix, was transferred to Woods last fall, our staff noticed he had tear staining around his left eye and appeared to be squinting in pain and discomfort. Our medical staff determined that Rory had a condition called entropion, in which the eyelashes of his lower eyelid were turned inward. Luckily, Woods was able to perform corrective surgery to the eyelid to restore Rory’s vision and put an end to his tears. Rory soon made a full recovery, but the days went by with this sweet, gentle boy waiting patiently to find his forever family. Finally, opportunity knocked: Rory got to be featured live on the evening news! Rory was so well-behaved that his five minutes of fame made waves. Soon, the perfect family came in to adopt our star.

Rory (now named Reno) has a loving family with a husky-sister named Lucia who is helping him adjust to what appears to be his first indoor home. His adopters shared, “Every sight and sound seem new to Reno and the poor guy eats like he doesn't know where his next meal is coming from, but we are slowly but surely getting him to understand he'll never be hungry again. We are forever grateful we are Reno's forever home.” There will be no more tears for this big guy, it appears. But, as for us, we’re going to need a tissue! Thank you to all of our supporters for giving us the means to change the lives of dogs like Rory.
