Dear Festival Supporter, We hope you’re looking forward to Lymm Festival Summer 2016 as much as we are!

Many people tell us that they consider Lymm Festival to be a very special part of our community life. Those involved in the Festival have to work very hard at raising the money needed to meet essential costs throughout the year to ensure that the best, most varied Festival can be confidently put together.

With more than 50 events taking place over an 11 day period this is our biggest festival so far. Featuring music, comedy, arts, drama, family fun and more children’s events than ever there really is something for everyone.

If you love the Festival and would like to show your support in a special way, please become a Friend of Lymm Festival.

We have two new categories this year, ‘For Children’ and ‘Heritage’, which we hope make it easier to find the events you’d like to see. We’ve also included our handy pull-out booking form in the centre of this guide to help you plan and purchase your tickets.

The Friends’ annual contributions are £20 (single) and £35 (couple) and gift aiding these contributions enables us to claim another 25p for every pound from HMRC – all enormously valuable in underpinning the Festival.

In addition to supporting the Festival, as a Friend you can also look forward to:

Cricket lovers are invited to Lymm Oughtrington Park Cricket Club to watch the cricket at 1pm and have afternoon tea in the clubhouse between innings of the 20:20 game. Festival Blues Night featuring The Stumble

Friday 17th June 2016 8:45pm (Doors 8:00pm) Lymm Golf Club | £12 The Stumble is a sixpiece blues band from Preston and their music is heavily based on the rapturous electric rhythm and blues guitar sound that emanated from Chicago in the 50s and 60s. Described as “red hot and rocking”, The Stumble is fronted by sensational singer Paul Melville and their influences range from BB King, Muddy Waters, Maceo Parker, Peter Green, Booker T, King Curtis etc. Seeing the band is an experience not easily forgotten.

Concert trio “In Voice and Verse” celebrate 500 years of British history in words and music. Actor Lance Pierson, soprano Belinda Yates and pianist Heather Chamberlain present the humorous highs and serious lows from across the centuries from Queen Elizabeth I to the present day. The music includes pieces by Handel, Beethoven, Purcell, Holst and Britten, as well as Rule Britannia and the National Anthem.

The words include Shakespeare, Milton, Tennyson and John Betjeman.

Sunday 19th June 2016 7:30pm United Reformed Church | £8 Following last year’s successful partnership, the Lydian Singers are again teaming up with the strings of the Nantwich Chamber Ensemble to showcase a wide range of choral and instrumental pieces. The concert will include Baroque works like JS Bach Motets, his Brandenberg Concerto No.3, Vivaldi’s Gloria to name just a few. Alligator Gumbo: In Concert

Sunday 19th June 2016 8:00pm (Doors 7:30pm) Lymm Golf Club | £11 Ready for some new talent and rising stars – maybe something a little different but not to be missed? Alligator Gumbo is a seven piece, Leeds-based swing band featuring clarinet, violin, trumpet, trombone, accordion, steel guitar, double bass and washboard.

They play swing/jazz from the 1920s era with songs made popular by the likes of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver,

Music/Dance Jelly Roll Morton and Ella Fitzgerald, performed in the traditional style of upbeat tempos, entertaining improvisations, foot stomping swinging rhythms and rowdy group singing.

given us through the ages as The Bridgewater Singers take you on a musical trip from the 15th century to the present. “England in Tune” is a celebration of music and song which will reflect the history, culture and tastes of the English. Saturday 25th June 2016 2:00pm - 7:00pm Lymm High School | Adults £5, Over 60 £4, Under 16 £2, Under 12 Free For the last two years Lymm High School has been the host for Lymm Out Loud, a musical extravaganza performed by members of the school and local community. Now called Lymm Live, there will be more music from talented music students and free activities for children whilst the adults relax. You can either bring your own picnic or take advantage of the food vendors and a licensed bar. The programme will include orchestral arrangements of classical and West End shows, brass bands as well as rock groups and solo performers.

Comedy Therapy: The Jake Thackray Syndrome

Altèri Chamber Choir – An Evening of Summer Music

Festival regulars The Jake Thackray Syndrome (Paul and Will Thompson) return with special guest John Watterson (a.k.a. Fake Thackray), performing the brilliant and bizarre comic songs of the late, great Jake Thackray.

Paul and John have played at Latitude and Cropredy Festivals, performed with Fairport Convention and even supported Alice Cooper.

John’s radio appearances include Radio 4, and he has an album of lost Thackray songs in production. With songs about transvestite nuns, unspeakable in-laws and rampant cockerels, all human (and animal) life is here.

A return visit of the Altèri Chamber Choir, this year with special guests, the Metropolitan Brass Quintet. The Altèri Chamber Choir has a repertoire encompassing a thousand years of music, from plainchant and organum through Machaut and Dufay, to the glories of Tudor church music and beyond. The choir has commissioned, performed and promoted new choral music over the past few seasons and has given first performances of works

by David Ellis, John Hawkins, Alan Lees and Jeffrey Lewis. Alteri will also include choral favourites by Handel, Vivaldi and Faure in its programme.

George Bernard Shaw invites YOU

All funds raised go to the Lymm Grass Roots Sports Appeal to fund new clubhouse development, and for Lymm RFC to become the heart of the local sporting community.

This critically acclaimed award winning oneman show explores the life, loves, works and politics of the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. He invites you to join him in celebrating his 90th birthday but the party is rudely interrupted

by Paddy O’Keefe, an obsessive Shavian (admirer of Shaw), who is determined to discover the man behind the mask – the real George Bernard Shaw. The show has had successful runs in Brighton, London, Dublin and New Delhi and will be staged in Chicago and San Francisco later this year.

This gem of an event is a rare opportunity to celebrate the art of poetry. Rob Deering, the UK’s foremost guitar-wielding, loop-layering standup comedian will take to the stage at our Festival Comedy Club.

Rob performs standup comedy with music, using a guitar, a loop pedal and his voice to create impressive rock and pop soundscapes – and do jokes, of course. He’ll be joined

by Markus Birdman, a controversial, personal and wickedly punchy comedian, renowned for his smart jokes and engaging stories. The night will be compered

Pick up a map at the starting location, walk at your own pace and collect stickers from pubs along the way.

Exercise, refreshment and all proceeds to Motor Neurone Disease Association – an allround enjoyable afternoon. This is a friendly, sociable pub crawl with a difference and it’s suitable for all the family to enjoy.

Spend a leisurely afternoon visiting some of the most beautiful gardens in Lymm and Thelwall. Out & About Spud Wood Stroll

Saturday 25th June 2016 1:30pm Ranger Centre, Statham Avenue | Free A 4 mile walk to the east of Lymm, along the Trans Pennine Trail, Spud Wood, the Bridgewater Canal and what was once the main road from Lymm to Manchester (but not since 1824 so it’s fairly quiet nowadays) in the company of Tim Baker, Ranger and Walk Leader. You will have time to enjoy the beautiful countryside whilst learning more about your surroundings.

Children under sixteen must be accompanied and supervised by an adult. Suitable clothing recommended and if you wish to bring your dog, please contact the ranger on 01925442495 beforehand. Guide dogs welcome.

Heritage Evening Bat Walk in Spud Wood

Saturday 25th June 2016 9:00pm - 11:00pm Spud Wood car park off Stage Lane | Adults £3, Accompanied Children £1 Are you batty about bats? To find out more about bats, join other enthusiasts at around sunset to walk along the canal and through the wood using special bat detectors to listen to and identify bats.

Local bat enthusiast Donald Kernott will lead the walk, all you have to do is wrap up warm and bring a torch. If it is raining heavily, the event will be cancelled.

Lymm Festival Trail Races

Sunday 3rd July 2016 5K 11am & 10k 12noon Lymm High School | Children’s Fun Run £3 | 5K runners 12-15 years £6 | runners 16+ £8 | 10K runners 16+ £10 (a £2 supplement is payable for runners who are not affiliated to UK Athletics) Runs for all ages and abilities; fun run (approx 1 mile) for children aged 4-11 years old, 5k for all aged 12+ and a 10k open to all aged 16+. All races start and finish on the Lymm High School running track. New for this year’s fun run is a woodland theme and entrants are encouraged to dress up as a woodland animal (prizes available!). All profits from the fun run will go to the Woodland Trust.

‘Rule Britannia’ Flower Festival

Friday 17th June 2016 10:00am - 4:00pm St Peter’s Church | Free St Peter’s Church was built on St Peter’s Day, 29th of June 1872.

It is a fine example of Victorian Gothic Architecture with the apse and vaulted roof modelled on Westminster Abbey. Over the first weekend of the festival this venue will play host to a flower festival celebrating nearly 500 years of British History from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II. Come along to celebrate the beauty of nature and see the church at its floral best.

Don’t miss the main event on the May Queen field. On the way drop in at the LEGO exhibition and model car racing at Maple Lodge and then experience the excitement on the main field where this year you will find a replica spitfire
