The darker lines (or the tear lines) that you see on the substance of the wood is known as the wood grain design. It is very simple to tear an individual veneer along the grain, and similarly hard to tear it over the grain. This is the reason, while making compressed wood the layers are masterminded to such an extent that the grain design interchanges in each layer, and this is the thing that makes wood sheets such a solid material.
