Activities - Unit 2 2025

For Unit 2 the following dates are important:

Monday 17 February: Online ballot opens Students emailed login details

Thursday 20 February: Initial online ballot closes at 10.30am

Friday 21 February: Restricted online balloting closes at 10.30am

Unit 2 Dates: March 24, 28, 31, April 28, 30 May 2, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19

Students who do not complete an initial online ballot (by 10.30am February 20), will have to complete a restricted online ballot. Th is will mean that students will have reduced choices or may need to complete a further restricted paper ballot if most of the Activities are full. Students who do not complete a ballot after the fi nal date will be placed into an Activity. Please choose carefully as you can be placed into any of your six selections.

To Students in Years 7 - 10

An outline of each Activity is given in the following pages. You should read the details carefully, be aware of any special requirements such as cost, equipment or materials and discuss your choice with your parents. If you need more information, you should contact the teacher in charge of the Activity, or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi. When you ballot for an Activity, you must be prepared to accept the Activity of your choice. Please choose carefully as you can be placed into any of your six selections.

To Parents

Some Activities may incur a cost ($) where individual coaching or special equipment is required. Costs are shown within this pamphlet and will be charged to the term’s account. If your child undertakes an Activity where there is a cost, you will be notified via Operoo.

Reminders

Over the school year you are encouraged to select Activities from a minimum of three of the following categories: Academic Enrichment/Challenge; Leadership; Visual and Performing Arts; Sport and Physical Development; Health, Lifestyle and Practical Skills; Technology and ICT; Community Partnerships.

Practical Activities and Sunsmart

In sporting Activities you will need your sports uniform and appropriate footwear. Students involved in outdoor Activities need to supply their own hat and sunscreen. Sunscreen is also available in each Homestead, the Sustainability Centre, with staff at outdoor venues and at the Gym in case you forget. Students must wear clothing that covers their shoulders, e.g. Woodleigh Polo Sports Shirt.

Non-Participants

Students attending Non-Participants complete written tasks (no ICT), quiet reading, or undertake school service around the school. If you miss your bus you must go to the non-participants room. If you forget your gear or have a minor injury, please discuss staying in your Activity and assisting with the teacher in charge. If you are ill or injured and unable to take part in your Activity, you must bring a note of explanation for the teacher in charge of the Activity. If you become ill during the day you must report to the Nurse for assessment prior to attending Non-Participants.

Activities Leaving School Grounds

Some Activities may run during lunchtime, particularly those where students are leaving the school. Students need to consider this when balloting and be aware that they may need to take and eat their lunch on the journey from school or back to school.

Additional Health and Safety Information

The health and safety of all in our community remains foremost in our planning. We are establishing ongoing protocols to ensure the physical safety of our community. For this reason some of our Activities will be adapted to provide reasonable precautions and a safe learning environment over the Unit. All Activities will abide by Government regulations.

Important Notes for Adventure-Based Activities (as indicated by a ) Some Activities are regarded as adventured-based. Being involved may have some higher elements of risk and the possibility of injury, both of a minor and serious nature. It is important that both students and parents are aware of this fact. It is also important that you have an understanding of the nature of the Activity, if you have any questions in regard to a specific Activity please contact the teacher in charge of the Activity or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi. If a student undertakes an adventure-based Activity, they may need approval from a parent via Operoo.

Academic Enrichment

$ Aviation (Pre-Book Yrs 8-11)

Students wishing to either start or continue with their training can ballot for this unit. Please contact Mr Scott (mscott@woodleigh.vic.edu.au) before balloting for more information. Basic Aeronautical theory taught during this unit will depend on group needs. Practical flying lessons will be tailored to the individual. Transport via Budget Rosa Bus or Woodleigh HiAce Van driven by a Woodleigh School staff member or via Driver Coastal Bus Lines. Please note: Th is Activity has an increased element of risk. Japanese Anime, Art and Culture (Yrs 7-9) Ms Ley Come and join us for this cultural experience, where you will be transported to the mysterious world of Gion in Kyoto and experience traditional Geisha arts from times past, such as calligraphy and origami. Spend time making warding masks for Tanjiro, enjoy delicious Ponyo noodles, and learn to draw manga just like Master Oda.

Barista (Yrs 10-11)

Learn the art of making espresso-based coffee using the school barista machine. Some sessions you may get instruction from a qualified barista to gain the skills to make the perfect latte. There may be the opportunity to visit some local cafés to further develop your understanding of what it takes to be a barista. If you are looking for that extra challenge, then this is the Activity for you. Transport via Budget Rosa Bus driven by a Woodleigh School staff member or via Driver Coastal Bus Lines.

Debating & Public Speaking (Yrs 7-10)

Ms Pope Th is Activity is designed for students eager to develop their skills in DAV and SIS debating and public speaking. Th rough engaging sessions, students will have the opportunity to practice, refine their techniques, and build confidence. In addition to skill-building, these sessions will focus on preparing students for after-school DAV competitions, helping them to excel in both individual and team events. Whether you are new to debating or looking to sharpen your abilities, this Activity offers valuable preparation for competitive success.

Making the RFP Homestead a Home (Yrs 7-10)

Be part of a small team of changemakers and help us make our regenerative future a reality. Learn practical skills in gardening, sewing and aquaponics as we improve the Year 10 Regenerative Futures Studio one step at a time. Possible projects include: Propagating and potting up indoor plants, sewing cushions and beanbags, creating outdoor garden beds, setting up worm farms and caring for the aquaponics system with yabbies and fish.

Philosophy In The Changing World (Yrs 9-11)

Join a small group as we discuss the big issues of life. Th is is a rare opportunity to engage in discussion, question, debate, and contemplate the issues we face. Is eating animals immoral? Are murderers evil? How can we be happy? Is there a God? Is there life after death? Is time travel possible? Under what circumstances would you fight in a war? Are all humans equal? No question is too controversial for this Activity. We will also view videos and discuss relevant texts related to the topic at hand.

True Crime (Yrs 9-10)

Join us for a heart-pounding journey into the dark world of true crime. Uncover the psychological motivations that drive criminals and delve into gripping real-life cases. Put your investigative skills to the test with DNA testing and examine fingerprints and shoe moulds for vital clues. Th is immersive true crime Activity sparks curiosity, critical thinking, and teamwork among students. Experience a world where science meets justice as you uncover the truth behind mysteries and contribute to the pursuit of justice. Are you ready to become part of the team that seeks the truth?

Academic Enrichment

War on Food & Waste (Yrs 7-11) Ms Clapham

Join the "War on Food & Waste" Activity and make a real difference in the fight against climate change! If you're passionate about reducing greenhouse gases and transforming how we handle food waste at Woodleigh, this initiative is perfect for you. You'll have the opportunity to create your own plan to do this which might include conducting audits, educating our community, and implementing sustainable composting and worm farm systems. Our aim will be to create practical, easy-to-manage solutions that not only reduce waste but also live out our commitment to sustainability at our school.

Woodleigh Taskmaster (Yrs 7-10) Mr Donaldson

Based on the popular BBC comedic game show, competitors will be challenged with a series of bizarre, tricky, funny, and often ingenious tasks. Will you be recreating a video game in real life? Making a music video for a nursery rhyme? Camouflaging yourself as effectively as possible? Building a house out of random items? With points up for grabs and random prizes on the line, you’ll have everything to play for and nothing to lose! Get ready to meet…the Woodleigh Taskmaster! Please note: this unit is for students who have not participated in this Activity previously.

Visual & Performing Arts

Ceramic Sculpture (Yrs 9-11) Ms Cleine

Join us for a hands-on ceramic sculpting workshop! Perfect for all skill levels, this session encourages artistic expression and exploration. Learn fundamental techniques from Ms Cleine and let your imagination run wild as you mold and shape clay. Whether you're drawn to figurative or abstract forms, this is your chance to bring your artistic vision to life. Don't miss this opportunity to express yourself through the ancient art of ceramics. Come shape your masterpiece!

Digital Drawing (Yrs 7-11)

Want to learn how to draw digitally but don’t know where to start? Th is Activity introduces you to the basic tools and software for digital drawing. Experience using a drawing tablet and stylus to create a variety of beginner to advanced drawings. Use tools on Photoshop to apply colour, tone, and fi lters to enhance your artworks. Students experienced in digital drawing are welcome to bring their own devices to create their own artworks.

Making Sea-glass & Sterling Silver Rings (Yrs 9-11)

Learn to make your own unique, contemporary silver ring using sea-glass salvaged from a local beach, bezel set in sterling silver.

Musical Rehearsal (Yrs 7-11)

Th is is for students participating in the school production. If you are in the Cast for the production, you MUST ballot for this Activity fi rst. We will be rehearsing throughout this unit.

Stop Motion Animation (Yrs 7-11)

Leike

Stop-motion Animation is a fi lmmaking technique in which objects or characters are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames. When the frames are played in sequence at a normal speed, it creates the illusion of movement. Sessions will include: Planning and Storyboarding, Set Design and Characters, and Frame-byFrame Photography. Th is Activity is open to all, come and create your own character and bring them to life through animation.

Watercolour Adventures (Yrs 7-10)

Th is creative Activity is for those with an artistic interest. During the Watercolour sessions, you will learn and put into practise the basics of creating when using watercolour paints. We will explore and experiment with various brush and application techniques, and you will get to take home a folio of experiments as well as your finished works of art.

Sport & Physical Development

 $ Golf (Yrs 7-11)

Get ready to tee off and elevate your golf game to new heights! Join us for enriching sessions designed to enhance your skills and deepen your passion for golf. From novices to intermediate players, everyone is welcome to join us at Centenary Park Golf Club in Frankston, Ranfurlie Driving Range in Cranbourne or X-Golf Mornington. Golf clubs and balls are provided, but don't forget to bring your own hat, glove, and suitable footwear. It's time to swing into action and make your mark on the green!  Strength & Conditioning Fitness (Yrs 9-11)

If you are interested in working on an individual program to develop muscular endurance, strength and improve your overall muscle tone and fitness then this is the Activity for you. Th roughout the unit, you will develop your own personal fitness program focusing on your specific needs such as improved sporting performance, rehabilitation or specific fitness components. Th is Activity will take place in the fitness mezzanine at Woodleigh.

Tennis (Yrs 7-10)

Serve up some fun and improve your tennis game with the guidance of a local professional coach! Whether you're a seasoned player or just starting out, all skill levels are welcome to join us for this exciting Activity. You will refine your skills, participate in round-robin matches, and simply enjoy the thrill of the game. Don't forget to come prepared with sports gear, flat-soled sports shoes, and a hat. If you don't have a tennis racquet, we can provide one for you. Get ready to rally, volley, and ace your way to a fantastic time on the court! Sunsmart applies.

 $ Group Fitness for Girls (Yrs 7-10) Ms Smallacombe Th is Activity will take place at Core24 in Somerville, Somerville Rec Centre and on campus. This will be an energising group fitness experience designed specifically for girls! Whether you're looking to boost strength, improve flexibility, or just have fun, our supportive and inclusive classes are the perfect way to stay motivated and reach your fitness goals. Get ready to break a sweat, meet new friends, and feel empowered in a high-energy, female-focused environment.  $ Indoor Climbing (Yrs 7-10)

Join us for an exhilarating adventure at Bayside Rock Indoor Climbing and Adventure Centre in Carrum Downs! Whether you're a seasoned climber or trying it out for the first time, our indoor climbing Activity offers a thrilling opportunity to conquer vertical challenges in a safe and supportive environment. Test your strength, agility, and problem-solving skills as you navigate a variety of routes suited to all experience levels. Our certified instructors will provide guidance and ensure your safety throughout the session. Transport via Budget Rosa Bus driven by a Woodleigh Staff Member or Driver Coastal Bus Lines.

Parents please note: Rockclimbing is an adventure-based activity and has an increased element of risk and therefore the possibility of injury associated with being involved. Students will be involved in climbing a range of indoor rock faces at the centre whilst being belayed by other students. There is a cost associated with this Activity.  SIS Cross Country (Yrs 7-11)

Do you enjoy your running, or do you want to improve your general fitness? During this Activity you will learn how to train and prepare for the many running events throughout the year. Sessions will be at various locations depending on weather, date and type of training. Venues may include school XC course, Frankston Foreshore, Ballam and Baxter Parks, George Pentland Gardens, Langwarrin Fauna and Flora Park, Bunarrong Reserve, Jubilee Park and Seaford Foreshore. You will need your running gear, towel, cap, sunscreen and water bottle. Runners of all abilities are encouraged and supported. Transport via Budget Rosa Bus or Driver Coastal Bus Lines. Vic College Basketball Squad Preparation (Yrs 7-10)

Mr Angelico Woodleigh sends its strongest basketball teams to compete in Victorian College Championships (VCC) in Term 2. Th is Activity Unit will be used to prepare the Junior Boys and Intermediate Boys squads physically, technically, and tactically for the tournament. Sessions will be led by Woodleigh Basketball coaches. If you wish to play for Woodleigh at VCC, you must attend trials (listen out for morning notices) and be part of this Activity Unit.

Sport & Physical Development

 $ Water Polo & Underwater Hockey (Yrs 7-10) Mr Flanagan

If you're a fan of the water, you'll love these two exciting sports! You should be able to swim confidently—snorkelling skills are a bonus—but beginners are always welcome. Underwater Hockey is a fun, quirky sport played beneath the surface, while Water Polo offers an equally fast-paced and thrilling above-water alternative. Some sessions may include land-based training on campus, but the majority will take place at Core24 in Somerville or PARC. Transport is provided via Budget Rosa Bus or Driver Coastal Bus Lines. Health, Lifestyle & Practical Skills

 $ Archery (Yrs 7-10)

Learn the skill of Archery from the staff at Eliza Archery, home of 2016 Olympic Medallist and past student, Alec Potts. You will learn the techniques of shooting developed by internationally renowned coach Ki-Sik Lee, who has brought scientific method to archery. All equipment is provided, and you will take part in different archery games and shoot many balloons along the way! Archery will be off campus at Eliza Archery, Seaford. Indian Street Food: Chai and Chaat! (Yrs 8-11) Ms Kentish Curious about authentic Indian Street Food? Want to explore the delicious vegetarian offerings of New Delhi? In this Activity, you'll learn to make chai (traditional Indian tea) and chaat (savory snacks) from Northern India. Perfect for those who enjoy a little spice and a lot of flavour, this experience is designed for adventurous eaters ready to savor the vibrant tastes of Indian cuisine!

Paper Craft Workshop - Flowers & More! (Yrs 7-10) Mr Fraser Paper Craft is the art of creating three-dimensional objects, models, or artwork from paper. It's a form of crafting that involves cutting, folding, gluing, and shaping paper to create various types of objects. Paper Craft can range from simple, decorative items like flowers or greeting cards to complex, intricate models. Come and join this relaxing Activity and learn how to make a Floral Paper Craft: once you master the basics, let your creativity flow and see what evolves.

Sewing for Beginners – Sew a Bag (Yrs 7-8) Ms Somkiat If you have always wanted to sew a bag, then this course is a must do. You will learn how to thread a machine and wind bobbins, straight sewing, use of the stitches on the machine, machine safety, use of pins and scissors. Cut out, pin and sew a simple lined shoulder bag. No sewing knowledge needed.

 $ Mixed Martial Arts - Pro Fitness (Yrs 7-11) Mr Ryan Th is is a great chance to be introduced to Mixed Martial Arts. A variety of different techniques will be demonstrated, and participants will then go on to practice and refine these skills working with a partner. Sessions will be highly active, so if you have lots of energy this is the Activity for you. Parents should note that this Activity is conducted by instructors from Pro Fitness MMA at their purpose-built venue in Somerville. Transport via Budget Rosa Bus driven by a Woodleigh Staff Member or Driver Coastal Bus Lines. Note: We strongly advise that students involved in this Activity should use a mouthguard as the potential for dental injury is reduced if an individually fitted mouthguard is worn. Yoga and Basic Meditation (Yrs 7-11)

Ms White Th is Activity will focus on postures, breathing, relaxation, movements and stretching whilst aiming to develop an awareness of the mind-body connection. You will have the opportunity to relax using self-chosen imagery, music and or muscle tensing. During the sessions we will explore other means of relaxation and mindfulness to enhance our wellbeing. Classes will be taken by a Woodleigh staff member.

ICT - Technology

AFL Footy Tipping Predictor - Data Analytics (Yrs 7-11)

Mr Allsop

Last year the Swinburne University’s famous computer AFL tipster got a 66.2 % correct score in the 2024 AFL season. Can Woodleigh students try and equal or better that in this Activity? Do you like AFL and want to study all the match data from 2024? What’s more important inside 50s or the number of disposals? … You decide!! In this Activity you will learn to program, build and create your own footy tipping version using software such as Excel for the 2025 season. There will be the chance to do this Activity again next unit.

Photography (Yrs 7-10)

Mr Benton

The Woodleigh environment is a wonderful place for artistic photo opportunities. We will cover portraiture (people/animals), landscape, weather time lapse and fast-moving sporting action. You will learn about light, photo composition, examine what makes an excellent photo and how to best enhance your pictures using both camera techniques and computer software. We will start from the very basics and develop your skills in industry standard photo manipulation software programs; Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. You will need to supply your own digital camera, ideally an SLR, but a phone is a good fall back. Images may be submitted to some photography competitions.

Theatre Technology (Yrs 7-10)

Mr Bingham

Are you interested in learning the skills to be able to operate the various technical elements found within the entertainment industry? Join this Activity and you will discover what all the faders and dials on an audio console do, how the lights at a stadium concert work, or how to design and project image and animation for stadium screens. We will be running from the basic operations level and developing skills from there. Come and be creative with us and immerse yourself in the world of backstage theatre production.

Community & School Partnerships

Brian Henderson Reserve (Yrs 7-11)

Are you interested in wildlife and the environment? Do you like being in the great outdoors? In this Activity you will support the day-to-day management of the Brian Henderson Reserve. You might feed the animals, contribute to enclosure set-up and maintenance, remove weeds, assist with pest animal control, plant new plants, collect bush foods, prepare animal meals, perform biodiversity surveys and carry out fence and track maintenance. Some tasks may also be performed outside the boundaries of the Reserve. If the weather is too hot/cold, we meet in the Science building and can tend to the animals kept there. Closed-toe sturdy shoes and long pants required. Water bottle recommended. Sunsmart applies.

Independent Learning Project (Yrs 10-11)

You can use this time to work on your own independent project. Th is may be a prior interest, business, subject topic or something new to enhance the School and the Community. Discussions MUST be had to organise a supervisor and submit a proposal or evidence of previous projects. Email Woodleigh Activities (activities@woodleigh.vic.edu.au) to discuss ideas and options before balloting.

The Woodleigh Farm (Yrs 7-11) Mrs Burchell

The Woodleigh Farm is an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in practical tasks and learn a variety of new skills. Students will complete a variety of hands-on seasonal tasks including growing plants, identify edible and non-edible plants, botanical drawing, farm weeding and maintenance, revegetating bush gardens, and simple garden landscaping projects. They will also learn about the digestive systems of sheep, goats and horses and help feed the animals during the afternoon sessions. Students will gain an understanding of where their food comes from and begin to understand sustainable agriculture and food production. Sunsmart applies.
