Important Dates

• Monday 10 November: Online ballot opens. Yr 7 Parents emailed login details. Yr 8-11 Students emailed login details.

• Thursday 13 November: Initial online ballot closes at 10.30am.

• Friday 14 November: Restricted online balloting closes at 10.30am

• Wednesday 4 February: Unit 1 Activities begin

Selecting and Balloting for an Activity

Over the school year you are encouraged to select Activities from a minimum of three of the following categories: Academic Enrichment/ Challenge; Leadership; Visual and Performing Arts; Sport and Physical Development; Health, Lifestyle and Practical Skills; Technology and ICT; Community Partnerships.

An outline of each Activity is given in the following pages. You should read the details carefully, be aware of any special requirements such as cost, equipment or materials and discuss your choice with your parents. If you need more information, you should contact the teacher in charge of the Activity, or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi. When you ballot for an Activity, you must be prepared to accept the Activity of your choice. Please choose carefully as you can be placed into any of your six selections.

Students who do not complete an initial online ballot (by 10.30am November 13), will have to complete a restricted online ballot. This will mean that students will have reduced choices or may need to complete a further restricted paper ballot if most of the Activities are full. Students who do not complete a ballot after the final date will be placed into an Activity.

Additional Information

Activities that incur a cost

Some Activities may incur a cost where individual coaching or special equipment is required. Costs are shown within this pamphlet and will be charged to the term’s account. If your child undertakes an Activity where there is a cost, you will be notified and approval will be required.

Activities Leaving School Grounds

Some Activities may run during lunchtime, particularly those where students are leaving the school grounds. Students need to consider this when balloting and be aware that they may need to take and eat their lunch on the journey from school or back to school. It is recommended that students participating in SIS Sports or students that have other commitments (Yr 12 subject, Music etc) choose Activities that are on campus to avoid missing sessions that you may be charged for. Transport is via Budget Rosa Bus or Woodleigh HiAce Van driven by a Woodleigh Staff Member or via Driver Coastal Bus Lines.

Adventure-Based Activities

Some Activities are regarded as adventure-based. Being involved may have some higher elements of risk and the possibility of injury, both of a minor and serious nature. It is important that both students and parents are aware of this fact. It is also important that you have an understanding of the nature of the Activity, if you have any questions in regard to a specific Activity please contact the teacher in charge of the Activity or the Head of Activities, Mr Azzopardi. If a student undertakes an adventure-based Activity, approval may be required from a parent.

Appropriate, Sunsmart Clothing

In sporting Activities you will need your sports uniform and appropriate footwear. Students involved in outdoor Activities need to supply their own hat and sunscreen. Sunscreen is also available in each Homestead, the Sustainability Centre, with staff at outdoor venues and at the Gym in case you forget. Students must wear Activity appropriate clothing that is in line with the Woodleigh Dress Code.

Additional Health and Safety Information

The health and safety of all in our community remains foremost in our planning. We are establishing ongoing protocols to ensure the physical safety of our community. For this reason some of our Activities will be adapted to provide reasonable precautions and a safe learning environment over the Unit. All Activities will abide by Government regulations.

Compulsory Unit 1 Activities

Students included in compulsory Units are not required to ballot as they will be placed in these Activities automatically.

Hattah Preparation All Y10

In the lead up to the Hattah Camp at the start of Term 2, students in Year 10 will complete a range of camp related tasks to aid in their preparation. Sessions will be held on navigation skills, safety, gear and food requirements and options. Hattah Preparation will run for Unit 1 Activities throughout Term 1.

Outward Bound Preparation All Y9

Lead an Activity Y11

This activity is designed to prepare students for their upcoming Outward Bound and City Bound experiences—not by focusing on hiking or camping techniques, but by equipping them with the personal and interpersonal skills that will help them thrive in both environments. Through interactive workshops and group challenges, students will build a wellbeing toolkit, strengthen communication and teamwork, and explore strategies for managing comfort and distress in unfamiliar settings. With a mix of physical preparation, emotional awareness, and systems thinking, students will learn how to support themselves and others—whether navigating the bush or the city. The skills developed here are transferable, empowering students to face challenges with confidence, empathy, and a sense of shared purpose.

Year 11 Program and Certificates

The following Activities are deisgned to enable Year 11 students to gain a certification during Activity time. Students are also able to take advantage of other Activities on offer.

RSA Certificate and Hospitality

During this course you will be instructed by an external provider to gain Liquor Licensing Victoria’s Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. You will learn about the Liquor Industry, Benefits of Responsible Service, Facts about Alcohol, Strategies for Responsible Service and Refusal of Service.

Barista Y11

Embark on a journey into the world of espresso mastery with our Barista Activity! You will unlock the secrets of crafting the perfect coffee, mastering every step from bean to cup. Dive deep into the art of espresso extraction, steam and froth milk to velvety perfection, and even learn the intricate techniques of coffee art. With each session, you’ll hone your skills, gaining the confidence and expertise to create exceptional coffee creations that will delight friends and family.

Fitness, Strength and Conditioning Y11

If you are interested in working on an individual program to develop muscular endurance, strength and improve your overall muscle tone and fitness then this is the Activity for you. Throughout the unit you will develop your own personal fitness program focusing on your specific needs such as improved sporting performance, rehabilitation or specific fitness components, along with participation in group fitness classes.

Study Skills & Micro Credentials Y11

Prior experience is required. If you have completed Activities in the past or feel confident to share a new idea, then this is the opportunity to take on a leadership role. You can select from one of the Unit 1 Activities below to lead or work with a partner under staff supervision, or to devise and develop your own innovative Activity to deliver for Unit 2 or Unit 3. Skills required are; confidence, communication, flexibility, thinking on your feet, leadership skills and organisation. See or email Mr Azzopardi to discuss ideas and options before balloting. Making Sterling Silver & Crystal Pendants Y11

During this unit students will have the opportunity to design and fabricate their own pendant made from sterling silver combined with a natural crystal. Students will make at least one pendant, selecting a natural crystal of their choice and then design and make the mount, bail and jump ring from sterling silver.

In this Activity, you’ll learn practical study strategies like notetaking, time management, and staying focused.You’ll have time to apply these skills and can also choose to earn micro-credentials to show your progress— helpful for future studies and academic success.

Unit 2 Certificates

During this Activity you will get the chance to participate in a wide range of sports. This may include basketball, volleyball, netball, soccer, badminton and many more. Sports will be played in the Woodleigh Gym or at Somerville Recreation Centre. Group interaction, team and individual competitions and challenges will be the order of the day. Students must have their sports gear and runners for every session.

If you would like to complete a Certificate in both U1 & U2, please ballot for RSA as your first preference, & a (U2) Certificate as your second preference.

(U2) Food Hygiene for Food Handlers Certificate Y11

Most food serving establishments such as restaurants or bistros expect their staff to have undertaken some type of food safety training to ensure the safety of customers. This course provides the food safety basics to help increase students chances of gaining a job in these establishments. Course includes information on the following topics; Food spoilage and food poisoning, Cross contamination, Bacteria growth and the ‘Danger Zone’, Personal hygiene when dealing with food and handling of food in the kitchen, What to look for when accepting food from suppliers, Cleaning of food premises and safe storage of food items. The course will consist of five sessions; theory sessions, a written test and a cooking session in the kitchen. Students will cook food and put into practice the safety lessons they learn in class. At the end of the course students will receive a Food Hygiene for Food Handlers Certificate of Participation, a recognised certificate.

(U2) CPR and First Aid Certificate - Level 2 Y11

During this Activity, you will gain your certificate in CPR and Level 2 First Aid. Students will gain the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies using basic life support measures only.

Students wishing to either start or continue with their training can ballot for this unit. Please contact Mr Scott (mscott@woodleigh.vic.edu. au) before balloting for more information. Basic Aeronautical theory taught during this unit will depend on group needs. Practical flying lessons will be tailored to the individual. Cost: There are costs associated, this depends on the number of flying hours.

Da Vinci Decathlon

In the Botanical Lino Printing Activity we will be taking inspiration from the flora around us and looking at the block prints of artists such as Margaret Preston and Thea Proctor. In response, we will create our own beautiful botanical art reduction lino cut prints.

Digital Drawing

The Da Vinci Decathlon provides extension across a variety of academic areas in an interesting and competitive way. Develop skills in the worlds of Code Breaking, Ideation (a form of philosophy) English, Mathematics, Science, General Knowledge, Art and Poetry, Creative Production and Engineering. The Activity culminates in an intense, interschool gala competition day. All the tasks are both exciting and challenging with particular emphasis placed on higher order thinking. Although a little daunting at the start, everyone who takes part finds this to be a truly rewarding experience. Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to meet and to learn with other like-minded students.

Want to learn how to draw digitally but don’t know where to start?

This Activity introduces you to the basic tools and software for digital drawing. Experience using a drawing tablet and stylus to create a variety of beginner to advanced drawings. Use tools on Photoshop to apply colour, tone, and filters to enhance your artworks. Students experienced in digital drawing are welcome to bring their own devices to create their own artworks.

Practical Pottery & Tableware

Come and design, make and decorate. Using specialist clay bodies to create a series of hand-built forms, your spatial and technical skills will be challenged. It’s not easy building bowls and plates, but you will learn techniques and get to experience a variety of textural surface applications. You will be able to test stoneware glazes which you will then apply to your forms.

Junior Production Rehearsal

This Activity is designed for students eager to develop their skills in DAV and SIS debating and public speaking. Through engaging sessions, students will have the opportunity to practice, refine their techniques, and build confidence. In addition to skill-building, these sessions will focus on preparing students for after-school DAV competitions, helping them to excel in both individual and team events.

Animation 101

Come along and partake in Woodleigh School’s Junior Production. Across Unit 1 and 2 we will work with a script to put on a show to perform to a young audience. There are plenty of opportunities to sing, act and dance. If this sounds like something that would interest you, come down and get involved.

These Activities introduce and develop a range of practical skills in predictable and unpredictable environments.

Beach Games and Fitness

Come and be involved in fun beach games like cricket, soccer and volleyball. Sessions will take place at the Olivers Hill end of Frankston Beach. This Activity is available to all students regardless of ability. Students must have their sports gear and runners for every session. All sessions will be based on the sand. Sunsmart applies.

Golf Camp Prep & Others

(You will automatically be placed into this Activity as your top preference if you are doing this camp in Homestead Camp Week - also include 5 other preferences online).

Calling all creatives interested in animation! Join us to learn skills in hand-drawn animation, digital drawing, motion graphics in Adobe After Effects and video animation effects in Canva. Students will work on a series of short animation experiments as an introduction to the world of Animation.An interest in drawing and basic computer skills is essential, but all creative types including total beginners in animation are welcome!

During the sessions, you will improve your golf and develop your interest and skills further and prepare for camp. The Activity will cater for novices to intermediate players with sessions being held with a Professional at Centenary Park Golf Club in Frankston. Golf clubs and balls are provided; however, students should supply their own hat, glove and wear suitable footwear. Sunsmart applies. (If you are in the Yr 11 Golf Camp, there is no cost for this Activity as it is covered through the Golf Camp fees.)

Snorkelling

Escape to a different world and experience a connection with nature. This Activity is full of tips and advice to help make snorkelling easier and more fun. Initial basic skills will be undertaken in the swimming pool at Core24 Health and Fitness in Somerville or PARC Frankston. You will learn about the equipment, surface techniques, the skills needed to snorkel underwater as well as the main safety aspects. Open water snorkel sessions will be conducted at a variety of locations around Mornington which may include Mornington Pier, Schnapper Point and Fishermans Beach depending on weather conditions. Students will be provided with a wetsuit and snorkel gear and will be required to change at the outdoor location.

This is a fun-filled Activity where you can showcase your skills, make new friends, and enjoy the thrill of all things soccer and ball games. Whether you prefer the fast pace of indoor play or the open field experience outside, there’s something for everyone. Tennis

Serve up some fun and improve your tennis game with the guidance of a local professional coach! Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, all skill levels are welcome to join us for this exciting Activity. You will refine your skills, participate in round-robin matches, and simply enjoy the thrill of the game. Don’t forget to come prepared with sports gear, flat-soled sports shoes, and a hat. If you don’t have a tennis racquet, we can provide one for you. Get ready to rally, volley, and ace your way to a fantastic time on the court! Sunsmart applies.

Water Sports & SIS Swim Prep

This Activity will be action packed with swimming, water polo, underwater hockey, and other water-based games as we bring together our keen swimmers and build towards the SIS Carnivals. All swimmers with aspirations of representing Woodleigh at SIS level are strongly encouraged to do this Activity to be considered for selection in the SIS team. Squad swimmers will be catered for with adjusted loads, where needed, but are required to be a part of this team-based Activity. Training will take place at Core24 Health and Fitness in Somerville or PARC in Frankston. The Homestead Swimming Carnival, SIS Swim Relay Carnival, SIS Swimming Carnival and VSAC Swimming Carnival are the major events we will be preparing for.

Health, Lifestyle and Practical Skills

These Activities provide a range of personal challenges and social experiences for the student to discover whilst learning and developing everyday skills.

Indoor Climbing

Join us for an exhilarating adventure at Bayside Rock Indoor Climbing and Adventure Centre in Carrum Downs! Whether you’re a seasoned climber or trying it out for the first time, our Indoor Climbing Activity offers a thrilling opportunity to conquer vertical challenges in a safe and supportive environment. Test your strength, agility, and problemsolving skills as you navigate a variety of routes suited to all experience levels. Our certified instructors will provide guidance and ensure your safety throughout the session.

Sew Your Own Summer PJ’s

If you’ve always wanted to make your own PJ’s, this course is perfect for you! You’ll learn how to thread a sewing machine, wind bobbins, and sew straight lines, along with how to use different stitches. We’ll cover machine safety, as well as the proper use of pins and scissors. Basic sewing knowledge is required.

Based on the popular BBC comedic game show, competitors will be challenged with a series of bizarre, tricky, funny, and often ingenious tasks. Will you be recreating a video game in real life? Making a music video for a nursery rhyme? Camouflaging yourself as effectively as possible? Building a house out of random items? With points up for grabs and random prizes on the line, you’ll have everything to play for and nothing to lose! Get ready to meet…the Woodleigh Taskmaster! Please note: This unit is for students who have not participated in this Activity previously.

Brian Henderson Reserve

Are you interested in wildlife and the environment? Do you like being in the great outdoors? In this Activity you will support the day-to-day management of the Brian Henderson Reserve. You might feed the animals, contribute to enclosure set-up and maintenance, remove weeds, assist with pest animal control, plant new plants, collect bush foods, prepare animal meals, perform biodiversity surveys and carry out fence and track maintenance. Some tasks may also be performed outside the boundaries of the Reserve. If the weather is too hot/cold, we meet in the Science building and can tend to the animals kept there. Closedtoe sturdy shoes and long pants are required. Water bottle recommended. Sunsmart applies.

The Woodleigh Farm

The Woodleigh Farm is an excellent opportunity for students to immerse themselves in practical tasks and learn a variety of new skills. Students will complete a variety of hands-on seasonal tasks including growing plants, identify edible and non-edible plants, botanical drawing, farm weeding and maintenance, revegetating bush gardens, and simple garden landscaping projects. They will also learn about the digestive systems of sheep, goats and horses and help feed the animals during the afternoon sessions. Students will gain an understanding of where their food comes from and begin to understand sustainable agriculture and food production. Closed-toe sturdy shoes and long pants are required. Sunsmart applies.
