It has been quite an exciting season here at The Pavilion! Earlier this summer we were proud to host Danny DeVito and David Newman on the Main Stage, a world-premiere performance by The Suffers and Houston Symphony and the annual Star-Spangled Salute event which achieved recordbreaking attendance. I want to thank all of our Performing Arts Sponsors listed in this newsletter for their support this season.

LET’S GET WILD AT THE 22ND ANNUAL CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL NOVEMBER 11 AND 12

Performing Arts Season Tickets are only $185 per seat and include orchestra-level seating at all Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera performances. Along with Gold Lot on-site parking and access to the brand new Woodforest Bank Club, Performing Arts Season Tickets make great Christmas gifts!

Explorers of all ages are invited to come out and play as The Pavilion is transformed into a giant playground for the 22nd Annual Children’s Festival this November. With performers on multiple stages, character meet and greets and wild adventures looming all around the venue, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. If you are part of an organization that needs service hours, I encourage you to look into volunteering for this event. It takes nearly 500 volunteers to produce Children’s Festival and we sincerely appreciate each one of them. More details can be found on the next page.

Lastly, we are excited to be bringing back Holly Jolly Jingle this year! On November 30, over 400 CISD and Sam Houston State University students will take the Main Stage to perform holiday favorites and a special guest from the North Pole will be making an appearance as well. So come out, bring the family and experience our world class venue.

Explorers of all ages are invited to come out and play as The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is transformed into a wild safari for the 22nd Annual Children’s Festival presented by ExxonMobil on Nov. 11 and 12, 2017.

Experiment with science-related activities in the South Plaza at the Accenture STEAM Zone where you can visit with Janet’s Planet and Nutty Scientists for some interactive and educational handson fun in an exploratory environment. Bring your little Picassos to Where The Wild Things Art for crafts, drawing and other artistry.

Kids can set their eyes on the sky at the Newfield Exploration Skyfari featuring kite building, parachute races and more. Release some energy by exploring every inch of the Anadarko Alligator Adventure Zone. From bubble runners and bungee jumpers to inflatable bumper cars and rock climbing walls, there are plenty of wild adventures to be had!

Coming with a little one? Join us at Cub Corner in the Event Center, a “festival-within-a-festival” for our youngest festivalgoers, ages 4 and under. This new area will feature storytelling, musical performances, interactive animal presentations, arts and crafts, free exploration, a special toddler inflatable and even a special nursing/changing area.

Children are in for the time of their lives with BIG performers on the Strike Main Stage and the opportunity to snag a picture with them during a character meet and greet.

On Saturday, Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild, presented by Nationwide, will take viewers on excursions around the world through the eyes of America’s most beloved animal adventurer and his family. The unscripted and action packed show is sure to leave you with a renewed appreciation for all creatures, great and small.

The fun will continue on Sunday with a family-friendly musical for mamas, papas and young cubs, The Berenstain Bears LIVE! in Family Matters The Musical will give boys and girls of all ages the chance to fall in love with these characters, just as their parents did when they were growing up.

CISD STUDENTS CELEBRATE FINE ARTS EDUCATION DAY AT THE PAVILION

Over 5,400 CISD students visited The Pavilion for one of its most successful educational outreach programs.

Fine Arts Education Day offered students a unique introduction to orchestral music and instruments.

Over 5,000 students from across 36 campuses in the Conroe Independent School District participated in Fine Arts Education Day on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

Fine Arts Education Day is a free educational concert featuring the Houston Symphony sponsored by The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The event is designed to introduce fourth grade students to orchestral music and the various instruments in band and orchestra before they choose an elective in fifth grade.

Some fifth and sixth graders are invited to watch where their studies could take them if they continue their pursuit of music in junior high.

“Fine Arts Education Day is a unique opportunity for collaboration between Conroe ISD, the Pavilion, and the Houston Symphony.

Conroe ISD believes in educating the whole child, and recognizes that the Arts are an integral part of a high quality education,” stated CISD Fine Arts Coordinator Dr. Robert Horton. “We are proud of the opportunities we’re afforded such as Fine Arts Day, and grateful for the many groups that support experiences like this for our students.”

Music in Motion Prepares Students for Competition

Music in Motion, one of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s educational outreach programs, was held September 23 at The Woodlands College Park High School. This was the eighth year for The Pavilion and CISD to present the program which was sponsored by The Woodlands Development Company.

As part of this free strings-intensive program, professional musicians from the Houston Symphony conducted master classes to assist high school orchestra students with their preparation for All-State Competition.

HOLLY JOLLY JINGLE RETURNS TO THE PAVILION Kick off the holiday season with performances of holiday classics and popular carols by Conroe ISD students and the Sam Houston State University Orchestra. The plazas will be decked out for holiday fun where guests can make arts and crafts, listen to carolers sing and visit with a special guest from the North Pole. All aboard for a ride on the Candy Cane Express for a merry good time starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Gold Lot. Pre-concert activities begin at 6:00 p.m. in the North Plaza.

The Pavilion Partners raised over $20,000 at their annual Pre-Concert Dinner & Fundraiser before the Zac Brown Band concert September 16.

The event supports The Pavilion’s educational outreach programs and performing arts events.

Multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated band Goo Goo Dolls and Phillip Phillips assisted Pavilion staff members with the collection of thousands of needed items at a special Hurricane Harvey donation drive held before the band’s concert September 7.

Matchbox 20 and Counting Crows put on an amazing show before a packed Pavilion crowd on September 30.

Families were treated to pumpkin decorating, train rides and a costume parade at the annual Hocus Pocus Pops Symphonic Spooktacular on Friday the 13th.

Depeche Mode rocked out on the Main Stage for a sold-out performance on September 24, 2017.

PARTNERS SPOTLIGHT Remembering Bill Craig 200. That is the number of events that Pavilion Partner Bill Craig worked since he joined the organization. Why? Because he believed in The Pavilion’s cause and loved making great friends along the way!

Raised in the Midwest, Bill and his wife Gaye joined The Pavilion Partners soon after arriving in The Woodlands in 1998.

Anybody who knew Bill knew of his passion for the arts. He recognized early on that The Pavilion’s performing arts events were the perfect opportunity for kids to see a symphony or ballet with their families and made for an incredible first-time concert experience.

Bill passed away suddenly on July 30, 2017 in Quito, Ecuador. He was enjoying one of his favorite things, travelling the world with family and friends.

Bill was loved by so many and all of us The Pavilion are truly grateful for his hard work and dedication to the organization and the venue. He will be truly missed.

THE FUTURE OF ART The Pavilion’s mission provides an opportunity to support young artists as they pursue college degrees in the arts through The Pavilion Partners Fine Arts Scholarship program.

Scholarships are awarded annually to high school seniors based on talent and academic performance within the categories of dance, instrumental music, musical theatre, theatre arts, visual art and vocal music.

To many students, these scholarships are vital to accomplishing a degree in a fine arts discipline. Through the fundraising efforts of The Pavilion Partners, over $1 million has been awarded to fine arts students in the local area.

These scholarships range, as funds are available, from $2,500 to over $7,500.

Stephanie Teed, scholarship co-chair congratulates a 2016 scholarship recipient at the annual reception.

The application process consists of student response essays, transcript and test score evaluation as well as teacher or instructor recommendation letters and an in-person audition. Scholarship applications are now available online.

Over his tenure, he has championed The Pavilion’s Mission of providing educational outreach and performance opportunities for our local schools. After 32 years of service for CISD, Dr. Stockton announced his retirement effective June 2018.

The Pavilion Welcomes New Employee to the Organization

Loretha Warren joined The Pavilion in September as the new Accounting Specialist. In this position, Warren is responsible for various accounting procedures including providing financial information, accounts payable, accruals, deposits and any other finance and accounting duties assigned. Warren brings with her a vast resume of accounting experience. Previously, Warren worked as the Property Accountant at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott where she was responsible for general accounting and audits as well as assisting Sales and Events with credit and billing setups for nearly fifteen years.
