C.A.R.E.S. Committee | Throws Back to School Bash for YES to YOUTH

Giving back is what it is all about and our C.A.R.E.S. Committee is always eager to roll up their sleeves for a good cause. In July, they set their sights on YES to YOUTH and worked behind the scenes to plan and execute a Back to School Bash that was fun and interactive for the kids residing at the BridgeWay Shelter

The C.A.R.E.S. members had a variety of games to entertain the kids along with lunch to help nourish them for the water balloon fight that would soon take place that afternoon. As we winded down the day, the kids were pleasantly surprised when the Kona Ice Truck pulled up ready to serve them.

It may have been a rewarding day for the kids who got to put their worries away for an afternoon and just enjoy being a kid, but for the C.A.R.E.S. members it was special just to see the smiles on their faces.

To learn more about YES to YOUTH, visit sayyestoyouth.org.

If you are looking for an outlet to give back, please consider joining the C.A.R.E.S. Committee. C.A.R.E.S. meets the first Wednesday of the month and provides assistance to our local nonprofits. 2024 Legacy Award Recipient | Gerald B. MacDonald

Jerry MacDonald was born in Schenectady, New York and graduated from Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida in 1974. Golf was a big part of his young life. He is an avid scratch golfer and was captain of the golf team at Florida Southern. Upon his graduation Jerry began his 50-year career in venue management beginning at The Lakeland Civic Center as Finance Manager. Six months after he started, he was promoted to Assistant Director, and 3 years later promoted to Director at the age of 27. The Lakeland Civic Center presented top entertainment while Jerry was there including Elvis Presley, Liberace, Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Frank Sinatra, Kenny Rogers with Dolly Parton and many more. Lakeland also had a Broadway theatre and Jerry booked many of the top Broadway touring productions.

In 1983 Jerry was recruited by Volusia County Florida to open a new 50-milliondollar venue named Ocean Center located in Daytona Beach. He oversaw 2 years of construction and design from the ground up. The new venue by the ocean opened in 1985 with a performance by John Denver.

In 1987 Jerry moved to Miami to open a new 60 million dollar, 16,500 seat arena for a new NBA expansion team, the Miami Heat. Julio

Iglesias was the opening concert for the Miami Arena in 1987.

In 1990 Jerry was asked to open a new 65-million-dollar arena in Memphis, TN on the banks of the Mississippi River called The Pyramid Arena. The Pyramid was a 20,000seat arena built not only for concerts and family shows, but also for Memphis State basketball. “The Judds” was the opening act. The venue also hosted many NCAA basketball tournaments.

In 1995 Jerry was called to Houston to manage The Summit, home for the Houston Rockets. He and his family settled in The Woodlands when they moved to Texas. After 8 very successful seasons, the venue was leased to Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in 2003.

Subsequently, Jerry was recruited to come to The Woodlands to become the President and CEO of The Woodlands Pavilion where he served for 21 years.

During his tenure, MacDonald presided over decades of growth and change at the Pavilion, including its full rebuild and expansion after hurricane Ike which devastated the venue in 2008. Years later, MacDonald shepherded the organization through the COVID pandemic, where he was able to maintain all full-time staff and emerge in solid financial shape. During MacDonald’s watch The Pavilion has consistently earned a spot among the top amphitheaters in the world from leading industry publication, Pollstar magazine, based on attendance. MacDonald has been at the helm of welcoming more than 8 million guests to the venue. Under MacDonald’s leadership, a significant impact on the infrastructure of the venue was made, including the building of the Woodforest Bank Club, the building of the Event Center and ice rink, and the expansion of the Operations building. In total more than 30 million dollars were spent in capital improvement projects under MacDonald’s watch. He left the Pavilion in excellent financial shape. In 2003, when he began his tenure, the Pavilion was 10 million dollars in debt. Today it is debt free and there are over 50 million dollars in its endowment.

Jerry and his wife of 50 years, Tricia have 2 daughters, Sally and Stacy, both graduates of The Woodlands High School, and they have 4 grandchildren.
