Remember the Chamber is a Resource for You during this Time… During this very challenging time, we all have had to shift our activities to meet the new necessities due to COVID-19 but there are some very effective ways to stay engaged with your fellow members of the Chamber. One of the Chamber’s Four Core Focus Areas is Advocacy. Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on important issues that mean a lot to the economy such as transportation, workforce development, and natural resource management. In particular, we have been working with our elected officials on how to help the business community cope with medical restrictions. The team has also been working on updating the Chamber’s Legislative Priorities and will be holding candidate forums on important races on the ballot this November. While we have curtailed our in person meetings, there are many opportunities to partner with the Chamber to meet virtually with our Networking Breakfast, Meet the New Members, Business After Hours as well as our Young Professionals Network and so much more. I invite you to maximize your membership by engaging with our upcoming signature events such as the Annual Meeting and Awards Program, Putt Pass and Chip Golf Tournament, and Employment Law. Looking ahead to 2021 to the Taste of the Town and the Economic Outlook Conference which are both planned for early next year. Take advantage of these resources. LINDA MANHARDT NELSON 2020-21 CHAIR Business Development & Regional Marketing Director, Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center Linda Nelson has been with Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, a 397-bed acute care hospital, since 1997. She completed her undergraduate degree in Business at West Virginia Wesleyan College and her MBA at Texas Women’s University. Wanting to stay active in the community that she both lives and works, Linda is active in the following organizations: Current Board Member of Leadership Montgomery County (LMC); Alumni Chairperson (2008 to present); LMC as past Chair; and a Class of ’99 graduate. She holds a current Vice Chairman of the Board position with the Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce with Team Leads on the Transportation Education Council; (2017-2018) and Business Advocacy Council; (2018-2019) plus two stints on Governmental Affairs Team (2012-2014; 2018-2019). Linda also held past Board of Directors position with the Greater Conroe/ Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce and contributes time on the Governmental Affairs Committee. She has also served the Montgomery County Republican Committee as precinct Chair and Election Judge (2006-2016) and on the Facilities Planning Committee for the Conroe Independent School District. Linda was born and raised in New Jersey and moved to the Houston area in 1980. She has been married to her husband, Gordon, for 40 years. They have three children and three grandchildren living in Houston and Austin. Other than spending time with family, you can find Linda playing racquetball or on the golf course.

JULIE H. AMBLER VICE CHAIRMAN Head of School, The Woodlands Christian Academy Julie H. Ambler has been the Head of School at The Woodlands Christian Academy since 2006. Under her direction, Woodlands Christian is becoming a national leader in Christ-centered college preparatory education serving students in grades Pre-K through 12th grade. Previously, she served on the school’s Executive Board for four years. Mrs. Ambler currently serves as Chairman of the Board for Summit Ministries, located in Manitou Springs, Colorado, Past Chairman of the Board and current board member for Leadership Montgomery County (LMC), Vice President of Legendary Leadership for the board of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, and Executive Committee Member for the Council of Educational Standards and Accountability (CESA). Additionally, she is a member and past board member of the Rotary Club of The Woodlands, where she has been named a Paul Harris Fellow. Mrs. Ambler is also past president of the Executive Women’s Alliance. She received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Leadership Montgomery County in 2012 and was named a Woman of Distinction by the Montgomery County Women’s Council of Organizations in 2014 & 2017. Interfaith of The Woodlands named The Woodlands Christian Academy the corporate Hometown Hero of The Woodlands for 2017. A graduate of The Hockaday School in Dallas, Mrs. Ambler holds a B.A. and an M.B.A. from The University of Texas at Austin. For seventeen years, she worked as a real estate investment banker in Houston, Texas, and Los Angeles, California, where she financed in excess of $1.2 billion of commercial real estate transactions nationwide. She is married to Price Ambler, a member of The Crossing Church, and is the mother of two adult children, Julia and J.P., both of whom are graduates of The Woodlands Christian Academy.

BRIAN ALBERT Shareholder, The Strong Firm P.C. Brian Albert is a partner with The Strong Firm P.C. in The Woodlands. Brian’s practice focuses on the firm’s Corporate, Business Transactions, and Commercial Real Estate practice groups. Brian utilizes his skills and experience in representing clients in a variety of business transactions and counseling on general corporate and other business matters. After graduating from American University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in Business Administration and a specialization in Finance, Brian went on to attend the University of Houston Law Center, where he served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Houston Business and Tax Law Journal. During law school, Brian completed corporate clerkships with Hewlett-Packard Company and Baker Hughes, Inc., and in between his two stints with The Strong Firm, he spent time serving as in-house counsel with Waste Connections, Inc.

Aside from work, Brian also volunteers his time and resources in serving on various boards and committees of local organizations, including past and present leadership positions with Leadership Montgomery County, Education for Tomorrow Alliance, The Woodlands Bar Association, and many teams within The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce. Some of the teams Brian serves on includes: the Diplomats, Young Professionals Network, the Seminar Team, the Golf Classic, and the Annual Awards Luncheon.

JIM CARMAN President, Houston Region, The Howard Hughes Corporation Jim Carman is President of the Houston region at The Howard Hughes Corporation. Previously, he served as Senior Vice President of MPC Commercial Development. He joined the company in August 2012 to oversee vertical development on projects located within The Woodlands and Bridgeland, both master planned communities in the Houston area. Mr. Carman was responsible for leading multiple teams in the development of the first phase of Hughes Landing, Houston’s premier mixed-use urban center on Lake Woodlands, taking the 66-acre project from conception to completion within three years. Prior to The Howard Hughes Corporation, Mr. Carman worked on mixed-use developments in Las Vegas, including Tivoli Village at Queensridge as well as projects located within the 70-acre Hughes Center. Previously, Mr. Carman served as Project Manager for the Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, a $500 million resort complex consisting of seven restaurants, 365 keys, 85 luxury condominiums,and a golf course designed by Greg Norman. Before moving overseas to manage the Ritz-Carlton project, he worked with The Haskell Company, a design-build contractor based in Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Carman was part of the joint-venture team that constructed the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, a $370 million performance complex in the heart of downtown Miami. Mr. Carman received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering as well as Master of Engineering in Construction from Texas A&M University.

JIM CROWDER Director of Business Rental Sales , Enterprise Holdings Inc. Jim Crowder is the Director of Business Rental Sales for Enterprise Holdings Inc., for the Greater Houston Area, representing National Car Rental and Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He has worked with Enterprise for over 22 years in sales and management roles; moving to Houston in 2017 after 7 years in Salt Lake and 12 years in Memphis. Crowder has been a leader in numerous community, travel and industry organizations here in Houston as well as Salt Lake City and Memphis including Vice President of Mid-South Business Travel Association, Board of Directors for Memphis CVB, Board of Directors for SKAL Memphis, Chairman of SL Chamber President’s Ambassadors, Salt Lake Chamber Clean Air Committee, SkiUtah Board of Directors, Breathe Utah Board of Directors and many others. Crowder was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing and Management from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN.

NICOLE PRESTON General Manager The Woodlands, Community Impact Newspaper Nicole Preston has adored The Woodlands from the time she moved to the community with her family in 1994. Nicole is a graduate of The Woodlands High School and The Aveda Institute. She started her business career in banking as a bank teller where she quickly rose through the ranks working for Amegy Bank, BBVA Compass Bank, Edward Jones and later became Assistant Vice President Branch Manager of Icon Bank. Nicole exited the finance sector in 2015 to pursue a career with Community Impact Newspaper and launched the company’s 9th edition in Houston for the Conroe/Montgomery community in April 2015. After entrenching Community Impact in that market, Nicole took advantage of the opportunity to return to her hometown of The Woodlands, where she became a top salesperson. Because of her knowledge and passion for The Woodlands community, Nicole was promoted to General Manager of The Woodlands edition of Community Impact Newspaper, the largest edition in the company, in the Fall of 2019. Nicole has been recognized by her company for her contributions with their ‘Passion’ stone and ‘Faith’ stone. Nicole serves on the Advisory Council at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Medical Center, The Woodlands Chamber Executive Leadership Council, Business Advocacy Council and the Lone Star College Small Business Development Center Advisory council. She is on The Woodlands Chamber marketing committee and the fundraising subcommittee for Memorial Hermann’s In the Pink of Health. Nicole and her daughter are members of The Woodlands United Methodist Church where she regularly volunteers her time. She is a member of Interfaith Young Professionals and has the opportunity to serve with likeminded leaders that understand you must have faith in others and you have to serve others fist. She is most recently a graduate of Leadership Montgomery County class of 2020.

RIP REYNOLDS Senior Vice President, JLL Houston’s Retail Agency Leasing Rip Reynolds is a Senior Vice President and is the lead for JLL Houston’s Retail Agency Leasing. Rip specializes in marketing and leasing retail properties on behalf of institutional and private owners. His current responsibilities include actively marketing properties, lease analyses and strategic lease negotiations for a wide range of owners with varying goals and objectives for their real estate assets. In addition, Mr. Reynolds is responsible for further expanding the firm’s Retail Agency Leasing platform in Houston. Rip has over 15 years of experience in retail leasing and commercial land transactions. Prior to joining JLL, he worked with The Woodlands Development Company/Howard Hughes Corporation where he was Vice President of Leasing and Commercial Land. While there, he had a large portfolio including Hughes Landing, Waterway Square, Creekside Park Village Green and more. Prior to working with the Woodlands Development Company/Howard Hughes Corporation he was a Vice President, Retail Brokerage at CBRE and before that he worked for Staubach/SRS Real Estate Partners. Rip is an avid fitness enthusiast who completed the Boston Marathon in 2018 and is a two-time finisher of Ironman Texas. He and his wife reside in The Woodlands, TX. They have two daughters attending college.

ANN WOLFORD President, The Wolford Group Ann Wolford, President of The Wolford Group marries her experience as a financial consultant with Merrill Lynch and her work in the philanthropic sector to bring a forthright business approach to the clients she serves. Her work in the nonprofit community officially began at the Santa Fe Community Foundation in 1991, where she saw firsthand the impact a well-run organization can have on the community. When Ann moved to The Woodlands in 1997, her work involved many “firsts” as she was recruited to establish departments and implement programs from the ground up for several organizations where she created innovative approaches to fundraising and sustainable donor relationships. She founded Interfaith of The Woodlands’ Development and Community Relations Department; Memorial Hermann Foundation’s first Development office at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands; and she became the first Director of Business Development at Huntsville Memorial Hospital. Ann launched the Life Beyond Cancer Foundation as its first Executive Director and served as Director of Charitable Giving for US Oncology (now McKesson). In 2011, Ann established The Wolford Group based on her vision to strengthen nonprofit organizations at their core. Her years in the industry have proven that without a foundation that includes strong board leadership, a bold vision, a clear mission, and a strategic plan that nonprofits will not realize their full potential. As a result of her corporate and nonprofit experience, she expanded her services to work with businesses to help them develop a corporate social responsibility plan to strengthen community partnerships, employee engagement and create heightened brand awareness. Ann’s clients range from startup nonprofits to multi-million dollar organizations. She is a mentor at Hailey Elementary, past president of Rotary Club of The Woodlands and The Woodlands Rotary Club Foundation, and currently serves on the boards of Leadership Montgomery County and The Woodlands Rotary Club Foundation.

STEPHEN WRIGHT Founder and President, Wright Business Technologies, Inc. As the Founder and President of Wright Business Technologies, Stephen Wright is responsible for the overall success of the company, clients, employees and the vendor partners who support the business. MIGUEL A. LOPEZ Executive Director, Lone Star College Small Business Development Center Miguel serves as the Executive Director for the Lone Star College Small Business Development Center. In this role he oversees a team of business advisers that work and assist small businesses start, grow and expand their businesses by providing; oneon-one, confidential, no cost business advising. Born in Monterrey MX, he became a naturalized citizen during his time in the United States Marine Corps where he served as a machine gunner from 1986-1990. After being honorably discharged he began attending North Harris Community College, today known as Lone Star College. Eventually transferring to Sam Houston State University, graduating in 1995 with B.A. in Criminal Justice. Miguel credits his customer service etiquette and business acumen to his almost 17 years of banking. He has worked with hundreds of small businesses; pre-ventures, start-ups and existing businesses. He has been involved in and served in leadership roles with numerous non-profit organizations throughout his years in Montgomery County, where he has been a resident of the Woodlands for over 25 years. Miguel is the oldest of 3 children, and plays Uncle (Tio) to 7 nieces and nephew. Bret Strong, the founder and managing shareholder of The Strong Firm P.C., has been a resident and an active community leader in The Woodlands, Texas for over 30 years. Steps to Leadership for Young Professionals

As a young professional, you can still be a leader even if you’re not in a position of power. In fact, if you exercise your leadership skills as a young professional, your road to a more desirable position can be much shorter. Follow these six steps to cultivate and exercise your leadership skills without having positional power:

Do Good Work

It is a cliché, but it’s true — lead by example. Do the best you can do, ask questions and try to exceed all expectations. Winners are seen as leaders.

Get a Mentor

A mentor is a trusted advisor with more experience or status who teaches you in a constructive partnership. You, as the protégé, learn from your mentor’s experience, while your mentor grows and benefits from your fresh perspective and knowledge. If your organization does not have a formal mentoring program, take the initiative to get one or more mentors on your own. You will stand out from the pack by doing so.

Take on an Initiative or Side Project

Many organizations have leadership opportunities on business development groups or committees. Leading one of these groups can increase your exposure to other leaders and managers in your organization. Professional associations typically have committees that also provide great opportunities for leadership, networking and self-marketing.

Speak or Write About Your Work

Nothing establishes you as a trusted expert on a subject faster than communicating about it in public. Seek out opportunities to speak at trade shows, conventions, technical symposia and meetings of professional organizations. In the office, give a “brown bag” presentation over lunch to your coworkers about your area of expertise. Offer to give this presentation to other offices as well. You can also show your expert status by writing articles for your industry trade journal, alumni magazine or company newsletter. If a difficult subject, such as a new or emerging technology, is important to and poorly understood by your group, do some research, write a white paper and share it with your coworkers. This extra effort can provide a lot of extra career mileage.

Stay Above the Fray

In any organization, it pays to be friendly and communicative with all your coworkers. But it is equally important to stay away from the gossip and backbiting that sometimes goes on in the workplace. Leaders need to be credible and honest. Nothing will undermine your leadership efforts more than being a source of office gossip or negative talk. If you are in a bad situation organizationally, don’t complain. The best thing you can do is step up your efforts to lead. Handling the situation in a focused and professional manner will cast you in the most positive light with management.

Ask for Advancement

This might be the simplest and most effective tip, but it is often the most overlooked. Once you decide what you want to do in your organization and what the next logical step for your career advancement should be, tell your immediate supervisor. Your supervisor’s success is directly and positively affected by your success, so in most cases your supervisor will help you be successful. If your supervisor is not receptive or helpful, it might be time to reassess your situation. Source: Monster.com

The Chamber Announces

New Marketing & Communications Director We are pleased to Welcome Chazzette Adams to our Chamber Team Chazzette Adams is now serving as the Chamber’s Director of Marketing and Communications. Mrs. Adams (Chaz or Chazzie) was born and raised on the twin island Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis. Chazzette comes to the Chamber having Chazzette Adams 8 years of experience owning her own digital marketing agency in the Caribbean. At the age of 23, after working at a publishing company, she ventured into the digital marketing arena and worked with some of the biggest companies in the Federation. She moved to Houston 4 years ago. Her life’s motto is to “impact and empower everyone she has the chance of meeting or working with.” We are happy to have Chazzette on our team. Community Relations Team Hosted Strategic Planning Meeting

he Community Relations Team (CRT) embraces and promotes the value of teamwork, community service and stewardship. The team completes monthly service projects or donation drives to serve nonprofit Chamber members. CRT held their strategic meeting to review non-profit community service applications and selected the monthly service projects representing: Angel Reach, CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County, Stronger to Serve, Henry’s Home Horse and Human Sanctuary, Bears Etc., Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Books on Wheels, Special Angels of The Woodlands, United Way of Greater Houston – Montgomery County Regional Center and Community Assistance Center (CAC). Mandy Rabon, Team Leader for the Community Relations Team, stated “We are very excited by the selection of projects our team chose for the coming year. We had quite a few worthy projects, but in the end chose the ones where we could make the most impact.” The Community Relations Team meets the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. We encourage all members to join us. This team has a passion for giving back to others and it is such a gratifying experience. Nonprofit members are also encouraged to attend. We end each meeting with a round table discussion of what is happening with each nonprofit. It is a great opportunity to keep everyone informed of how they can help contribute to various causes and an opportunity to share resources. he Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce Business Advocacy Council will be hosting virtual Legislative Priorities meetings starting the month of August to identify the Chamber’s legislative priorities related to education/workforce, and tourism for the 87th Texas Legislature beginning January 12, 2021, and concluding on May 31, 2021. Business Advocacy’s Legislative Agenda is to summarize the important legislative goals and areas of concern to our community. he Abundant Harvest Kitchen is a non-profit food kitchen and food pantry with the mission to create and support experiences around the table that feed the body, nourish the soul, and transform the food insecure community in Montgomery County. St. Isidore Episcopal Church launched The Abundant Harvest Food Truck in 2017 and opened The Abundant Harvest Kitchen at 24803 Oakhurst Drive (Rayford and 45) in March of 2020 just as the coronavirus pandemic hit Texas. Jeremy Hall is their new Executive Director. Year-to-date the Abundant Harvest Kitchen has served more than 6,600 meals and given away more than 750,000 pounds of food. Currently the Abundant Harvest Kitchen is feeding more than 500 families in the community each week residing

in South Montgomery County and Spring neighborhoods through the Kitchen site at St. Isidore Episcopal Church. In addition, once every week groceries are distributed to over 200 families in New Caney through the mobile food pantry in partnership with the Texas Familias Council and the Montgomery County Food Bank to those suffering from food shortage and lost income from the pandemic. The drive through pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00am-3:00pm. Prepared meals are also donated to the Kitchen on site by appointment. Meals to Go are offered for purchase every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Each meal purchased allows another meal to be donated to a family in need. Hot meals have included Pulled Pork with Macaroni and Cheese, Southern Tomato Pie, and Stuffed Hatch Chili. Frozen meals may also be purchased for dining at home later or to share with another family in need.
