A MESSAGE FROM J.J. HOLLIE

Remember the Chamber is a Resource for You during this Time… During this very challenging time, we all have had to shift our activities to meet the new necessities due to COVID-19 but there are some very effective ways to stay engaged with your fellow members of the Chamber. One of the Chamber’s Four Core Focus Areas is Advocacy. Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on important issues that mean a lot to the economy such as transportation, workforce development, and natural resource management. In particular, we have been working with our elected officials on how to help the business community cope with medical restrictions. The team has also been working on updating the Chamber’s Legislative Priorities and will be holding candidate forums on important races on the ballot this November. While we have curtailed our in person meetings, there are many opportunities to partner with the Chamber to meet virtually with our Networking Breakfast, Meet the New Members, Business After Hours as well as our Young Professionals Network and so much more. I invite you to maximize your membership by engaging with our upcoming signature events such as the Annual Meeting and Awards Program, Putt Pass and Chip Golf Tournament, and Employment Law. Looking ahead to 2021 to the Taste of the Town and the Economic Outlook Conference which are both planned for early next year. Take advantage of these resources. Check out a listing of our upcoming events at woodlandschamber.org/calendar. And while you are there, I encourage you to learn more about our volunteer teams at woodlandschamber.org/teams. If you have any questions or would like additional information, give us a call at 281-367-5777, email us at info@woodlandschamber.org or stop by our office at 9320 Lakeside Blvd., Suite 200, The Woodlands, TX 77381. Thank you for reading our September publication. And thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your business.

Her work in the nonprofit community officially began at the Santa Fe Community Foundation in 1991, where she saw firsthand the impact a well-run organization can have on the community. When Ann moved to The Woodlands in 1997, her work involved many “firsts” as she was recruited to establish departments and implement programs from the ground up for several organizations where she created innovative approaches to fundraising and sustainable donor relationships. Steps to Leadership for Young Professionals

As a young professional, you can still be a leader even if you’re not in a position of power. In fact, if you exercise your leadership skills as a young professional, your road to a more desirable position can be much shorter. Follow these six steps to cultivate and exercise your leadership skills without having positional power:

1

Do Good Work

It is a cliché, but it’s true — lead by example. Do the best you can do, ask questions and try to exceed all expectations. Winners are seen as leaders.

2

Get a Mentor

A mentor is a trusted advisor with more experience or status who teaches you in a constructive partnership. You, as the protégé, learn from your mentor’s experience, while your mentor grows and benefits from your fresh perspective and knowledge. If your organization does not have a formal mentoring program, take the initiative to get one or more mentors on your own. You will stand out from the pack by doing so.

3

Take on an Initiative or Side Project

Many organizations have leadership opportunities on business development groups or committees. Leading one of these groups can increase your exposure to other leaders and managers in your organization. Professional associations typically have committees that also provide great opportunities for leadership, networking and self-marketing.

4

Speak or Write About Your Work

Nothing establishes you as a trusted expert on a subject faster than communicating about it in public. Seek out opportunities to speak at trade shows, conventions, technical symposia and meetings of professional organizations. In the office, give a “brown bag” presentation over lunch to your coworkers about your area of expertise. Offer to give this presentation to other offices as well. You can also show your expert status by writing articles for your industry trade journal, alumni magazine or company newsletter. If a difficult subject, such as a new or emerging technology, is important to and poorly understood by your group, do some research, write a white paper and share it with your coworkers. This extra effort can provide a lot of extra career mileage.

5

Stay Above the Fray

In any organization, it pays to be friendly and communicative with all your coworkers. But it is equally important to stay away from the gossip and backbiting that sometimes goes on in the workplace. Leaders need to be credible and honest. Nothing will undermine your leadership efforts more than being a source of office gossip or negative talk. If you are in a bad situation organizationally, don’t complain. The best thing you can do is step up your efforts to lead. Handling the situation in a focused and professional manner will cast you in the most positive light with management.

6

Ask for Advancement

This might be the simplest and most effective tip, but it is often the most overlooked. Once you decide what you want to do in your organization and what the next logical step for your career advancement should be, tell your immediate supervisor. Your supervisor’s success is directly and positively affected by your success, so in most cases your supervisor will help you be successful. If your supervisor is not receptive or helpful, it might be time to reassess your situation. Source: Monster.com

Rules of a Zoom Meeting Etiquette From the Pros

l

BE ON TIME

Zoom’s waiting room allows a host to decide how long laggards must cool their heels before being granted entry. A rule of thumb: There’s no need to recap for a late arrival.

CLOSE THE OFFICE DOOR l

Turn off your phone. Stop notifications and email alerts. Arrange for family to stay in another area.

l

TURN ON THE CAMERA Avatars and stock photos are no longer acceptable stand-ins at many workplaces. They’re difficult to take seriously and make everybody wonder what you’re up to.

l

SIT STILL

If you need to change location, don’t just grab the laptop and go, making everybody else feel like they’re on a wild amusement ride. Turn off the video momentarily.

ADVERTORIAL

O

ver the past 25 years, Lone Star College-Montgomery has served the community by creating a culture of innovation, academic excellence, and student success. On August 14, 1995, founding President Dr. Bill Law and former President George W. Bush (then governor of Texas), dedicated Montgomery College. Dr. Law remarked, “The sun is always shining at Montgomery College. It shines because we have such a tremendous opportunity to help people improve their lives.”

Dr. Law predicted that Montgomery would be among the best community colleges in the United States. As LSC-Montgomery celebrates its 25th year, those expectations have been met. Montgomery is the first choice in higher education for more high school graduates in our area than any other college or university and was recently ranked among the top 100 community colleges in the US by Niche. With programs as diverse as aviation, biotechnology, health occupations, fine arts, live entertainment technology,

LSC-Montgomery is an affordable option for higher education. The college provides community support through job fairs, fundraisers, sporting events, and science fairs and partners with Chambers of Commerce, economic development groups and industry to promote economic growth. Even as Montgomery celebrates its accomplishments, we look to the future with excitement about what the next 25 years will bring. Don’t miss a bit of Montgomery Maverick news. TEAMS IN ACTION

Community Relations Team Hosted Strategic Planning Meeting

T

he Community Relations Team (CRT) embraces and promotes the value of teamwork, community service and stewardship. The team completes monthly service projects or donation drives to serve nonprofit Chamber members. CRT held their strategic meeting to review non-profit community service applications and selected the monthly service projects representing: Angel Reach, CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County, Stronger to Serve, Henry’s Home Horse and Human Sanctuary, Bears Etc., Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Books on Wheels, Special Angels of The Woodlands, United Way of Greater Houston – Montgomery County Regional Center and Community Assistance Center (CAC). Mandy Rabon, Team Leader for the Community Relations Team, stated “We are very excited by the selection of projects our team chose for the coming year. We had quite a few worthy projects, but in the end chose the ones where we could make the most impact.” The Community Relations Team meets the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. We encourage all members to join us. This team has a passion for giving back to others and it is such a gratifying experience. Nonprofit members are also encouraged to attend. We end each meeting with a round table discussion of what is happening with each nonprofit. It is a great opportunity to keep everyone informed of how they can help contribute to various causes and an opportunity to share resources. For more information, please contact Cyndi Alvarado, Vice President of Membership, at cyndi.alvarado@woodlandschamber.org.

Abundant Harvest Kitchen... Feeding the Body, Nourishing the Soul, Transforming the Community

T

he Abundant Harvest Kitchen is a non-profit food kitchen and food pantry with the mission to create and support experiences around the table that feed the body, nourish the soul, and transform the food insecure community in Montgomery County. St. Isidore Episcopal Church launched The Abundant Harvest Food Truck in 2017 and opened The Abundant Harvest Kitchen at 24803 Oakhurst Drive (Rayford and 45) in March of 2020 just as the coronavirus pandemic hit Texas. Jeremy Hall is their new Executive Director. Year-to-date the Abundant Harvest Kitchen has served more than 6,600 meals and given away more than 750,000 pounds of food. Currently the Abundant Harvest Kitchen is feeding more than 500 families in the community each week residing

in South Montgomery County and Spring neighborhoods through the Kitchen site at St. Isidore Episcopal Church. In addition, once every week groceries are distributed to over 200 families in New Caney through the mobile food pantry in partnership with the Texas Familias Council and the Montgomery County Food Bank to those suffering from food shortage and lost income from the pandemic. The drive through pantry is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10:00am-3:00pm. Prepared meals are also donated to the Kitchen on site by appointment. To make an appointment visit HarvestKitchen.org/food-pantry.

Meals to Go are offered for purchase every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00pm-6:00pm. Each meal purchased allows another meal to be donated to a family in need. Hot meals have included Pulled Pork with Macaroni and Cheese, Southern Tomato Pie, and Stuffed Hatch Chili. Frozen meals may also be purchased for dining at home later or to share with another family in need. To see the latest menu offerings visit HarvestKitchen.org/ meals-to-go The Abundant Harvest Kitchen is always in need of volunteers. Volunteers are needed to cook, serve, provide hospitality, organize the pantry, and stock shelves. Experience is not needed, and any skill level is welcome. Sign up at HarvestKitchen.org/volunteer. Monetary donations are always appreciated to help the community with food. Proud to be a member of The Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce, The Abundant Harvest Kitchen can be reached via email at Team@HarvestKitchen.org or by calling (781) 474-3673. BUSINESS CONNECTIONS

Networking Breakfast: Guide U

Focused on its mission of comprehensive college planning, application assistance, and degree planning, GuideU is now booking consultations!

T

he Woodands based company GuideU, owned and operated by Amy Hollie, offers personalized college consulting to help families successfully navigate the complicated college admissions process. GuideU’s approach includes a holistic process to answer each family’s questions as they search to find the right fit for their student’s needs. GuideU is available to start this process for students as early as 8th grade, allowing the students and their families time to explore high school course selection, summer enrichment programs, prepare for standardized testing, and begin effective research on target colleges. The most common services for juniors and seniors in high school include creating time-lines for application deadlines, assistance with writing resumes, analyzing test scores, as well as evaluating out of state college choices and different degree plans. GuideU’s goal is to reduce the anxiety students and parents feel when preparing for college admissions. With 19 years experience in public and private education, Amy provides access to someone who is knowledgeable, well-trained, ethical, and remarks, “While it is impossible to make a guarantee in regards to admission, I often feel the benefit you gain from this type of investment is similar to hiring someone to help you plan a vacation - you avoid potential missteps, the best advice is from someone who has been to the destination before!” Amy Hollie holds a BA in Operations Management from Auburn University with a M.Ed. in School Counseling from University of St Thomas. For more information please checkout GuideU’s webpage at collegeguideu.com.
